SUMMER BRIGHTS
The ultimate Summer Skincare ingredient checklist
By Staff Writer
Hotter weather and increased exposure to sun, heat, and humidity can lead to buildup on the skin, dullness, and even pesky breakouts. Incorporating clarifying and brightening ingredients into your routine can help keep skin fresh, balanced, and radiant all season long. “Key ingredients like salicylic acid, papain extract, niacinamide, and ultra-fne rice powder are perfect additions to any summer skincare routine to achieve the glow we all long for,” explains Vitaderm’s marketing manager Ruan Winter.

Here’s why these powerful ingredients deserve a spot in your skincare lineup this season:

The pore-purifying powerhouse, salicylic acid
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) known for its deep-cleaning abilities, perfect for summer when skin is more prone to oil buildup and breakouts. This oilsoluble ingredient penetrates pores to dissolve excess sebum, clearing out debris and reducing the chances of blemishes. It also gently exfoliates the skin’s surface, helping to smooth texture and improve clarity.
Nature’s
gentle exfoliator, papain extract
Papain extract, derived from papaya, is a natural enzyme that provides gentle exfoliation without the harshness that some scrubs can bring. Known for its brightening and softening properties, papain helps slough away dead skin cells on the surface, revealing a smoother, more even-toned complexion beneath. This botanical enzyme is particularly benefcial for those who prefer a gentler exfoliation process, as it works without irritating.
The brightening all-rounder, niacinamide
Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, is a multitasking ingredient that strengthens the skin barrier, improves texture, and enhances overall skin radiance. This powerful antioxidant is ideal for summer as it helps manage excess oil, reduce the appearance of enlarged pores, and even out skin tone. Additionally, niacinamide supports moisture retention, ensuring your skin stays hydrated and balanced even under the summer sun.
Ultra-fne rice powder for smoothing and polishing
Rice powder has long been a staple in Asian skincare for its ability to gently exfoliate and brighten. Ultra-fne rice powder works as a physical exfoliant that polishes the skin’s surface, removing any buildup of dead skin cells while imparting a smooth, soft fnish. It’s also packed with natural antioxidants that help protect skin from environmental stressors, making it an excellent addition to a summer skincare regimen.

TEmpowering Through Action Tshego Maringa’s Path to Purpose & Impact
By Elize Fisher

shego Maringa is a force for transformation. As a seasoned Human Resource Generalist and the Managing Director of Proactive HR Consulting, she brings critical support to small and medium enterprises, especially in industries like mining and construction, where she honed her skills. Tshego is also a certifed Life Coach, specializing in personal development, and has cofounded The Art of Unbecoming to Become, a nonproft dedicated to personal growth, fnancial literacy, and mental wellbeing for people of all backgrounds. Her energy and commitment are evident in every project, including her “21 Days Self Discovery & Awareness Challenge” that helps people deepen their selfmastery and awareness.
For Tshego, working with people isn’t just a job—it’s her calling. She thrives in environments flled with laughter, harmony, and genuine connection. This passion guided her into HR and life coaching, where her daily work refects her dedication to helping others achieve personal and professional growth. The complexities of HR, particularly in her male-dominated feld, have given her an opportunity to not only guide companies through human resource intricacies but also develop resilience and confdence as a woman leader. The challenges are real, yet so are the rewards: every time she witnesses a client evolving into a stronger version of themselves or receives a referral from a satisfed customer, she is reminded why she chose this path. Referrals, she believes, are the ultimate testament to a job well done, validating her commitment to providing quality service.
Balancing professional and personal life isn’t always easy, especially when the stakes are high in both. Tshego has found a rhythm that works by maintaining clear boundaries: work hours are strictly 7 am to 4 pm, while the rest of her time is dedicated to family. This separation, she says, is essential. “If you don’t separate your time, you risk losing either your family or your business,” she advises. For Tshego, achieving balance doesn’t mean giving equal time to everything but rather knowing when to fully commit to one aspect and when to shift focus to the other.
To those starting their entrepreneurial journey, Tshego offers candid advice. “Write down your goals and make sure they’re realistic,” she says. Social media might paint an idealized picture of entrepreneurship, but real success requires hard work and preparation. She encourages emerging entrepreneurs to invest in
themselves through courses and training rather than searching for shortcuts. “Sometimes, the glitter isn’t gold,” she warns, reminding others to stay grounded and focused on their personal growth.
Even with clear goals, motivation can be hard to sustain, especially in the face of obstacles. Tshego has developed her own toolkit for staying resilient. Weekly refections, introspection, and motivational podcasts keep her grounded and continuously evolving. Her practice of regularly asking herself what challenges taught her or how she could improve isn’t just a professional exercise but a personal one that fuels her desire to grow in all areas of life.
Looking ahead, Tshego’s ambitions are as bold as they are purposeful. She envisions creating a training institution that would provide essential skills to disadvantaged individuals, enabling them to thrive in mining, construction, and manufacturing. This dream of empowering others through education aligns perfectly with her mission and values, and she’s committed to expanding Proactive HR Consulting to create employment opportunities and stay at the forefront of industry standards.
Her goal is clear: by continuously delivering exceptional service, staying current with industry developments, and prioritizing the well-being of her clients and community, Tshego aims to build a legacy that uplifts others.

The Entrepreneurial Spirit of
From Bees in the Bonnet to Big Dreams. Carol George
By Elize Fisher
Carol George is not one to shy away from a challenge. Whether it’s juggling family life with an entrepreneurial career or launching multiple ventures, she does it with the grace and determination of a seasoned businesswoman. A mother of two teenagers, Ethan-James and Kyrah, and the proud Founder of Carol George | BizNetwork, Carol’s entrepreneurial spirit is clearly rooted in her love for people and passion for creativity. As she coins it, All the Bees in her Bonnet, Carol embodies the true essence of entrepreneurship.
But what sparked this entrepreneurial drive? For Carol, the inspiration came not only from women like Cathy Black and Jane Raphaely, but primarily from her own mother. Her mother’s strength, resilience, and the wisdom to always make conscious decisions laid the foundation for Carol’s professional endeavours. Carol acknowledges that while her mother never started her own business, the lessons learned from her have been vital to her success. Additionally, Carol’s family— especially her supportive husband James— has been her steadfast cheerleader, encouraging her to take leaps of faith while assuring her they’ll always be there to catch her if she stumbles.
However, Carol’s path hasn’t been without its hurdles. As a working mother and entrepreneur, balancing family responsibilities with professional demands often proves challenging. Yet, Carol emphasizes the importance of empowering each other in business and being part of her newly established Ladies BizNetwork Tribe community, it has been a source of strength, providing a safe platform of likeminded women who support and uplift
each other. She credits her “Confdent Women In Business Community” for offering discernment, prayer, and unwavering support when she faces challenges. With this strong foundation, Carol says, “With God, everything is possible.”
One of Carol’s proudest accomplishments was the success of her ballet store, which she ran for four years. But it’s her recent work that has truly moved her. In May 2024, Carol hosted her frst fundraising high tea for Honey Fashion Accessories, where she raised R3000 for the Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (CHOC).
In November 2024, Carol hosted her second fundraising tea and raised R2000 for Colour My World South Africa, an NPO for children who are differently abled, you welcome to make a donation to this worthy cause, via their website www.cmwsa.org.za That experience, she says, felt like validation that she was on the right path.
Adding to her list of accomplishments, besides, being a Sales Consultant for Honey Fashion Accessories and embarking on a new entrepreneurial journey as a Sh´Zen Consultant, Carol is also a Certifed Reading Therapist and a Reader | Scribe, which brings her great joy helping children to learn to spell and read and assisting kids during exam time.
Balancing a family, business, and community involvement isn’t always easy, but Carol has found her rhythm by drawing strength from those around her - much like the power of unity extended, as pictured below, alongside Tammy Green (left) and Lauren Amy Thorne (right) from Harmony
Mobile Spa. She credits her family for picking up the pieces when things don’t go as planned, saying, “I have my people who pick me up again and dust off the cobwebs.” For Carol, the ability to lean on loved ones is key to staying grounded and focused.
To other working mothers and entrepreneurs starting out, Carol has simple, yet powerful advice: “Don't Wait! Step out and Make your Dreams, Your Vision, Your Heartbeat, a reality! No idea has worked if you have not done or tried it,” she encourages. The sense of achievement from taking action, even if it means facing failure, propels her forward and fuels her determination to succeed.
Carol’s motivation and focus come from a deep sense of faith. “With God, everything is possible, and I do all things in Christ who strengthens me,” she says. These guiding principles keep her grounded and motivated to achieve her personal and professional goals.
Looking to the future, Carol is excited about being a resource to Ladies in Business by extending an open invitation of ¨Coffee with Carol¨ while we talk business but also build the blueprint to fourish and ignite their entrepreneurial spirit while on their own entrepreneurial journey.
Her ultimate goal is to host networking events and launch masterclasses and workshops that will provide women with the tools and inspiration they need to succeed in business.
For more information, you can follow Carol’s journey by connecting with her on LinkedIn @carolgeorgebiznetwork.

Why Celebrating Yourself is the Key to
True Wellbeing
By Candace Feinberg
Let’s face it, so many of us have been subtly taught to shrink ourselves, to play down our wins, and to dial back our brilliance.
Society’s well-worn cliche of “stay humble” can sometimes feel like it’s asking us to be invisible. But imagine if the secret to true wellness—feeling whole, fulflled, and unapologetically in tune with our values—actually began with celebrating ourselves fully, embracing all of our parts, faws and all?
Celebrating yourself isn’t about showing off or being arrogant; it’s about owning who you are—the highs, the lows, the resilience you’ve built. It’s about embracing your journey with pride and letting your unique light shine. When we stand in our light, we make space for others to do the same, creating a ripple effect that strengthens our communities. Strong communities need strong women, women who aren’t afraid to step forward and lead by example, women who show up in their truth and inspire others to do the same. When we embrace self-celebration, we encourage a cycle of self-love, resilience, and empowerment in those around us.
So why don’t we do it more often? Often, it’s fear—fear of being labelled, judged, or misunderstood. Many of us play the wallfower, worried we’ll seem “too much” or “too proud.” But what if, this year, we decided to let go of that hesitation? What if we celebrated each victory, big or small, personal or professional, without downplaying it? Imagine approaching each success with pride and gratitude, rather than holding back or brushing it off.
Celebrating yourself isn’t just for you—it’s for everyone around you, too. Younger generations look to us to see what’s possible, and by owning our accomplishments openly, we teach them that their dreams and victories are just as worthy of celebration. When women feel free to cheer themselves on, we’re lifting each other up and creating a world where everyone feels empowered to grow.
Wondering where to start? Start small. Acknowledge your wins, even the ones that seem minor. Maybe you tackled a project at work or showed up for yourself with a morning run. Write these moments down or take a pause to recognize them fully. Set personal milestones, and when you reach them,
celebrate in a way that feels meaningful—a nice dinner, a small gift, or even a quiet moment to just soak it in.
And don’t forget: surround yourself with people who uplift you. Find friends and mentors who celebrate your wins and want to see you thrive. Be that cheerleader for others, too. When we build each other up, we counter the inner voices that tell us to stay small.
Owning your accomplishments builds strength that fuels every area of your life, inviting you to live authentically and trust yourself. This kind of selfcelebration sends ripples through your relationships, your community, and the world.
So, where have you held back from celebrating yourself? What achievements have you brushed off for fear of judgment? Let this be the year you embrace your wins and allow yourself to fully bloom. When you do, you’re not just honouring yourself; you’re paving the way for others to do the same. Step into your light, celebrate yourself and watch the magic unfold.
Africa’s Workforce Fuels Hybrid Work Demand
Africa is in the midst of unprecedented changes to the workplace that will affect enterprises and workers across the continent for decades.
By Joanne Bushell, MD IWG
The Hybrid working model has become increasingly popular across South Africa and Africa, and for good reason. Although they’ve long been a workspace of choice for entrepreneurs and freelancers, more small-to-medium sized businesses and corporations are also starting to move into a hybrid style of working. Regus are trusted by thousands of enterprise customers worldwide and 83% of the Fortune 500 use our services and continue to plan for their workplaces to become primarily hybrid.
Enterprises in South Africa are transitioning to remote or hybrid work models to reduce offce space costs and enhance employee well-being, leading to improved organisational performance. Hybrid work positively impacts physical, mental, and emotional health whilst offering a signifcant impact on profts. It also helps reduce the carbon footprint, as 86% of journeys are made by car, contributing to 3.2 tonnes of CO2 per person annually. Hybrid working is better for People, Planet and Profts bringing a place to work into the heart of local communities, saving businesses money and supporting 6 of the UN Sustainable development goals
When enterprises were asked about the future model of their workplace, just 4 per cent said that they planned to remain partly remote. In the coming years, many enterprises will continue to use a hybrid workplace model, with some work taking place remotely or at home and other work being done at the HQ or a close to home co-working space.
In South Africa it was found that physical presence at the workplace was signifcant. The impact of the economic downturn has had an immense impact on African enterprises, especially for companies not traditionally designed to operate digitally fawlessly. Others place great emphasis on particular parts of the business process, such as training, mentorship and orientation.
While hybrid workplaces are set to increase across Africa, enterprises in some countries seem likelier to do so than others. The research suggests that Nigeria leads the way, with some 56 per cent of enterprises planning a hybrid work model. Mozambique may also see a signifcant share of hybrid workplaces, with 49 per cent of enterprises planning to use this model.
One Manager in Uganda said that human connection was a fundamental part of their work. “Our business is about interaction, meeting face to face, creating relationships. It's something we can't take away from our products." Certain parts of the business are more effective in person, which can be handled from any coworking space closest to the employee’s home or at the HQ when necessary.
There is much to be gained from the serendipitous interactions in the corridor and other things you can't recreate online. It is sometimes more productive to deal with issues instantly and in person and a Regus centre close to home allows for a variety of spaces to do just that.
With long commutes increasingly a thing of the past and hybrid working now standard for up to 40% of all workers, the research suggests there has also been a surge in the workforce of commuter towns as hybrid working allows people to work closer to home, Local economies are set for a boost as hybrid workers could rise by up to 175% in local towns.
Demand for co-working spaces to rise
Technology empowers white-collar workers to do their jobs productively no matter where they are. Locations with historically larger white-collar commuter populations and fewer local whitecollar jobs are set to beneft the most, as workers recognise that
they can work closer to home and from local workspaces without the long commute – ultimately further increasing local spending in Suburbs, dormitory towns and rural communities.
Hybrid working allows employees to choose where and how they work, which workers highly value. Previous research by IWGRegus’s parent company - found that 72% of hybrid workers said they would only consider new jobs and roles that allowed them to base themselves at workspaces closer to home for part of the week.
Mark Dixon, CEO and founder of IWG commented, “The hybrid migration is one of the most important forces at play in the world today as workers increasingly embrace the opportunity to work locally, bringing signifcant opportunities to the economies of local communities as well as creating a better work-life balance for employees.
Hybrid working is radically reshaping the geography of work. This latest research highlights that it has a profound and lasting impact on the make-up of communities and the geography of towns and cities.
Suburbs, smaller towns and rural communities everywhere are being revitalised, and this trend will continue to accelerate over the coming years.
About IWG - Parent company of Regus IWG is leading the workspace revolution. Our companies help millions of people and their businesses to work more productively. We do so by providing a choice of professional, inspiring and collaborative workspaces, communities and services. Digitalisation and new technologies are transforming the world of work. Time to Break Free 2 Things Every Working Mom Should Stop Doing Right Now.
By Sally Wade
Being a working mother often feels like a neverending juggling act. You’re balancing career ambitions, family responsibilities, and a myriad of daily tasks, all while trying to maintain a semblance of personal well-being.
The truth is that we’re so used to being busy that we don’t even question it anymore.
We expect to be exhausted, stressed out and running on empty, because that’s what we’ve been shown. That’s the norm for working mothers, right?
Well, yes and no.
Yes, it’s the “norm” in terms of what we see and hear about being a working mother. And No because it doesn’t have to be this way.
If you’re like most working mothers, what you’re actually feeling is the weight of societal expectations and outdated work norms.
What if I told you that making a few key changes could signifcantly improve your life?
Today, let’s talk about two things you should stop doing right now to reclaim your peace of mind and enhance your work-life balance. It’s time to let go of the pressure to meet everyone’s expectations and stop ftting into a mould that was never designed with you in mind.

1. Stop Worrying About What Others Think
From the moment you become a mother, it seems like everyone suddenly has an opinion about how you should raise your children and manage your career. Whether it’s family members, friends, or even colleagues, the unsolicited advice can feel overwhelming.
Here's a reality check: their expectations and judgments often refect their own insecurities or outdated views, not your true needs or desires.
The Pressure to Conform
It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others - especially in the age of social media, where curated images of “perfect” families and careers are constantly in your feed. The truth is, what works for someone else might not work for you, and that’s perfectly okay.
The Impact on Your Well-being
Constantly worrying about others' opinions can lead to stress and anxiety, making it harder to focus on what truly matters to you. Instead of striving to meet external expectations, take a moment to evaluate what is important to you and your family. Trust your instincts and make choices based on your own values and priorities.
A New Perspective
Consider setting boundaries around the input you receive. Politely decline advice that doesn’t align with your vision and focus on creating a life that feels right for you. Embrace your unique journey and celebrate the successes that come from following your own path.
Practical Actions to Take
1. Set Clear Boundaries: Establish frm boundaries around your work and personal life. Communicate these boundaries clearly to colleagues and family members. For example, decide on specifc work hours and stick to them, ensuring you have dedicated time for family and self-care.
2. Limit Social Media Exposure: Social media can amplify feelings of inadequacy and comparison. Limit your time on platforms where you fnd yourself comparing your life to others. Instead, curate your feed to include content that inspires and uplifts you.
3. Practice Self-Affrmation: Develop a habit of positive self-affrmation. Remind yourself of your achievements and strengths regularly. Write down what you’ve accomplished each week and refect on these successes to build confdence and self-worth.
2. Stop Trying to Fit Into the Outdated “Ideal Worker” Mould
The traditional “ideal worker” model is rooted in an era that didn’t accommodate the realities of modern working mothers. This outdated concept often assumes that workers can dedicate all their time and energy to their jobs without considering the diverse responsibilities that come with being a parent.
This “ideal worker” model - where success is equated with long hours and constant availability - fails to account for the unique needs and contributions of working mothers. Trying to ft into this mould often means sacrifcing your own needs, family time, and well-being.
This outdated model can lead to feelings of inadequacy and frustration when you’re unable to meet these unrealistic expectations.
It’s time to challenge this narrative and redefne what success looks like for you.
The Myth of Perfection
Many working mothers feel pressured to prove that they can handle both their career and family responsibilities without compromise. This myth of perfection often leads to burnout, as it’s impossible to meet such unrealistic standards.
Breaking
the Mould
It’s time to challenge the norms and redefne what success looks like for you. Flexibility, creativity, and adaptability are key components of a more realistic and fulflling work model. Advocate for fexible working hours, remote work options, or job-sharing opportunities that allow you to meet your professional goals while also being present for your family.
Creating Your Own Success
Redefne what success means to you. It might be about fnding a balance that allows you to thrive in both your personal and professional life. Set realistic goals, celebrate your achievements, and remember that it’s okay to prioritize your well-being.
Practical Actions to Take
1. Redefne Success: Create a personalised defnition of success that aligns with your values and goals. Consider both your professional achievements and personal fulflment. Write down what success means to you and use it as a guide for setting realistic and meaningful goals.
2. Seek Flexible Work Arrangements: Advocate for work arrangements that suit your needs, such as fexible hours or remote work options. Have an open conversation with your employer about how these changes can beneft both your productivity and work-life balance.
3. Prioritize Self-Care: Make self-care a non-negotiable part of your routine. Schedule regular time for activities that rejuvenate you, whether it’s exercising, reading, or spending quality time with loved ones. Prioritizing your well-being will help you perform better both at work and at home.
Embrace the Change
Letting go of these two pressures—worrying about others’ opinions and trying to ft into an outdated work model—can signifcantly improve your quality of life. By focusing on what truly matters to you and embracing a more fexible approach to work, you can fnd greater satisfaction and balance.
Take Action Today
Refect on how these pressures are affecting you and take steps to shift your mindset. Set clear boundaries around external opinions and advocate for work arrangements that align with your needs. Remember, you have the power to shape your life and career in a way that works best for you.
If you’re struggling to make these changes on your own, seek support from communities of like-minded working mothers who are navigating similar challenges. Sharing experiences and strategies can provide valuable insights and encouragement.
Finding Your Balance
The journey of a working mother is uniquely challenging, but it doesn’t have to be defned by outdated expectations or constant self-doubt. By letting go of the need to please everyone and breaking free from the “ideal worker” mould, you can create a more balanced and fulflling life.
Celebrate your individuality, embrace fexibility, and remember that you are doing an incredible job. Your path is uniquely yours, and it’s time to step confdently into a future where you thrive on your own terms.
So, what are you stopping today?

Shy to Shine
Your Cheat Sheet for Confdence-Building
By Nayan Rath
Iwas excited to enroll Eva in a music club. She was super thrilled too. When she reached, she simply froze and stopped speaking. Perhaps this is a familiar struggle when kids are exposed to new people? I just apologised for my daughter’s behaviour using the ‘s’ word: She’s shy. Maybe her limiting belief holds her back: ‘I’m not good at making friends’. Every little kid wonder, “Can I, do it?” Decide which inner monologue you want to encourage (“I think I can!” or “I think I can’t!”). Match your words and actions with a striking balance. Too little confdence can prevent kids from taking risks in school, and too much enthusiasm can generate arrogance or narcissism. However, parents can play an enormous role in helping kids develop selfconfdence.
Now Mamaz! Buckle up: Confdence-boosting is wild and wonderful, involving lots of humour. and patience. Every mismatched outft, mixed-up word, and every imaginative Lego tower is a steppingstone for kids to feel capable. It might be the best gift for kids besides that superhero cape they keep wearing for dinner. Raise a confdent daughter by acknowledging her empathetically. This will let her trust herself by verbalizing feelings to walk through challenges. Raise a confdent son without societal stereotypes that boys don’t cry. Validating boys’ emotions helps them channel anger into healthy outlets to understand others. Let’s have the playbook for nurturing resilience and self-belief to survive the process with most of our hair still intact. So, grab a snack, settle in, and dive into some tips to nurture Confdence in your child.
1. Praise the Hustle, not the win Mamaz makes lots of empty praises like “You’re amazing!” But imagine if every time you compliment your kid, they start expecting freworks and become praise junky. Instead, focus on praising their effort. “You worked hard to build the tower. Oh! It topples. No issue: you try your best.” This tells kids that success is about effort, not just the result. Confdence comes from giving their best and not being perfect.
2. Allow safe mistakes
Wearing shirts backwards and violating table manners may be fun. Helping them realize their mistakes develops resilience in kids. Learning from goof-ups helps them think.
‘Oops Sorry! I put on wrong socks.’ Let them correct it. Fixing minor faws builds confdence and makes them proud: “Hey, I can solve problems!” Don’t jump to protect them from every tiny disaster. Sip your coffee and let them realize that mistakes aren’t disasters but opportunities.
3. Teach them to speak up
Confdence isn’t about being the loudest but knowing when and how to speak up. Start small - Let them order their menu at a restaurant, ask for the chocolate they like, or choose a dress for Halloween. Feeling respected gives them a strong sense of selfagency and confdence.
4. Let them decide
Give them small responsibilities, and you hover casually. Celebrate their small wins, whether picking their clothes, planning a family TV show, or choosing dinner. Let them feel like the boss—at least for 20 minutes.
5. Weirdness is funny
Every kid is a quirk master, a magician. Show them that confdence is about loving what makes them unique. Let them put a pretend menu on the dinner table. Laugh with them (not at them). Laughter helps. When they “redecorate” the living room with Play-Doh, appreciate it. It might just be a nostalgic memory in their journey to confdence. And who knows? In the process, you might just become a little more confdent!
Bottomline! Confdence is a journey— One Crazy, Messy, Beautiful Journey.

Te Power of Family Routines
for Well-Being & Connection
By Candice Lynn Warner
In the busyness of daily life, it can feel challenging to slow down, especially as a parent. But I’ve found that creating simple family routines can bring a lot of calmness and connection to my home, especially with my fveyear-old. These routines don’t have to be grand or time-consuming; they just need to be consistent and meaningful. I often talk in my book, Reparenting the Inner Child, about the importance of creating safe, reliable spaces for ourselves and our loved ones, and I see that refected in the small routines we share as a family.
One routine we hold dear is our bedtime ritual. Each night, my son and I wind down with a few minutes of “story time,” which goes beyond reading a book. We tell each other something about our day—what made us laugh, what surprised us, and even what frustrated us. It’s simple, but it’s a chance to share honestly and listen deeply. These few minutes let my child know that no matter how the day went, there’s a warm, safe place to end it.
My son, a bit of a negotiator, especially when it comes to our bedtime reading routine, loves picking a book (which almost always turns into two or three). I know that, for him, this choice and the consistency of our routine make him feel secure. No matter how our day has gone, he knows there’s always story time, and that bit of control brings him joy. And in those shared stories, we’re bonding and building a lasting connection. It’s our bedtime talks, followed by prayer time, that truly connect us.
In my therapy work, I often share with parents that routines aren’t just nice-to-haves; they’re essential. Routine creates a sense of predictability in children, and this predictability builds trust and safety. A child waking up, knowing the fow of the day, learns to trust their environment, especially if you’re a parent like me who fnds themselves in a co-parenting position. The weekly or biweekly transitions and handovers can be taxing on our children. But when we establish environments that foster trust, even in the middle of these changes, we’re creating a sense of safety for them.
For instance, our evening routine at home is quite set. Between 5 and 6 p.m., it’s playtime. Then we sit down for supper from 6 to 7. Between 7 and 8, its bath time, and promptly at 8 p.m., we’re heading into bedtime. I know that this works differently for every household, and I don’t share this as a prescriptive formula but as what works for us with my busy schedule. I’ve come to realise that routine isn’t about enforcing strict rules; it’s about fnding what fows best in our family life and making it our own.
For parents, fnding calm within the rush of parenthood is not only possible but essential. While routines help our children feel secure, they also give us pockets of quiet to reconnect with ourselves. Even just fve minutes of deep
breathing, reading a chapter of a book, or sipping a warm cup of tea while your child plays can make all the difference. As parents, we often lose ourselves in caring for others, but these small, intentional moments allow us to reset. In those quiet spaces, we remind ourselves to be present and calm, to slow down and truly experience the precious, feeting moments of our child’s life.
What I’ve found through my own parenting and my work, is that routine isn’t about rigid rules; it’s about providing a structure within which our children feel seen, secure, and cherished. Each family dynamic is unique, and every family should shape routines to ft what works best for them. But fnding those little touchpoints of consistency can make a world of difference, helping children feel safe and deeply connected, even through life’s inevitable shifts.
Routines like this are more than just habits; they are touchstones of safety and love. And just as I teach in Reparenting the Inner Child, creating this dependable moment isn’t just about my child; it’s a form of self-care for me too. It reminds me to be present, to listen, and to value these everyday moments of connection. By establishing small but consistent routines, we’re building a family culture that values well-being and connection. These routines don’t have to be perfect or complex, keeping them authentic and doable is key. And in challenging times, these simple routines can be a source of strength, helping our children (and ourselves) feel grounded and supported.
Holly B.C. Anderson, a parenting expert and author, asserts the following: “Children may not remember every word you say, but they will feel the warmth of a consistent presence. Our routines create roots of security, giving them wings to grow.”
This insight underscores the importance of stability in our lives. Just as family routines nurture a child’s sense of security, the milestones we achieve together in our community strengthen our bonds and foster deeper connections. Parenthood is full of milestones; frst steps, frst words, and frst days of school. Each moment counts, and as mothers and parents, we create routines that support our children's growth and well-being. This issue highlights those small yet meaningful acts of love and care that connect us all.
In refecting on this journey, we honour the inspiring stories of women who have enriched our community. We lift each other up, celebrate the challenges and victories of parenthood, and cherish the simple moments that shape our families. By creating spaces of support and encouragement, we embrace the beautiful journey of motherhood; one flled with love, learning, and deep connections.
Tips & Tricks for Long Distance Travel with Kids
By Chéry Radley Van Staden
1. Plan Ahead

Traveling long distances with kids can be both an exciting adventure and a challenging experience. Whether you’re fying across the oceans or taking a road trip, keeping your little ones entertained and comfortable is key to a successful journey. Here are some tips and tricks to make longdistance travel with kids a breeze
Research Your Route Before you hit the road or board a plane, research your route. Knowing what to expect helps ease anxiety for both kids and parents. Just as we want to know “where, when and how”, so our kids also just want to know and understand. For long car trips, plan to take breaks every couple of hours. Stop at parks, playgrounds, or rest areas where kids can stretch their legs and burn off some energy. This helps prevent restlessness and crankiness during the journey. If fying, take advantage of airport amenities. Many airports have play areas, family lounges, or interactive exhibits that can help kids burn off energy before a fight.
Book the Right Accommodations When traveling by car, consider staying at accommodations that offer family-friendly amenities like pools or play areas. For fights, choose seats that are more spacious and convenient for families, if possible. Some airlines even offer priority boarding for families.
5.
Set Expectations
Talk About the Journey Before traveling, talk to your kids about what to expect. Explain the travel process, including any security checks at the airport or long hours in the car. This helps prepare them mentally and reduces anxiety.
Create a Travel Schedule If your kids are old enough, create a simple travel schedule that outlines when you’ll be leaving, estimated arrival times, and planned stops. Having a visual representation of the trip can help manage their expectations.
6. Be Flexible
2. Pack Smart
Essentials Bag Create a travel bag with all the essentials your kids will need during the trip. This can include snacks, water bottles, medications, activities and travel pillows. Having these items readily available minimizes disruptions during your journey.
Entertainment Options Bring along a variety of entertainment options to keep your kids occupied. For car trips, consider audiobooks or music playlists. For fights, download movies or shows on a tablet or smartphone. Make sure to have headphones for everyone! Long distance fights at least have onboard screens, but in this case, an activity bag with ageappropriate activities from colouring into wordsearches or fdget toys.
Comfort Items Don’t forget to pack comfort items, such as a favourite blanket, stuffed animal, or travel pillow. These familiar items can help kids feel more at ease during long journeys.
3. Engage Them in the Journey
Travel Games Introduce classic travel games like "I Spy," or "20 Questions,". These games are not only fun but also encourage kids to observe their surroundings and engage with the travel experience.
Storytelling Turn travel into a storytelling session. Encourage your kids to come up with their own stories or read a book together. This can be a great way to bond and keep everyone entertained.
Create a Travel Journal Give each child a travel journal to document their journey. They can draw pictures, write about their experiences, or collect stickers from different locations. This not only keeps them engaged but also creates lasting memories.
4. Snack Wisely
Healthy Snacks Pack a variety of healthy snacks to keep kids satisfed and energised. Consider items like fruit, granola bars, or yogurt. Avoid too many sugary snacks to prevent sugar crashes and maintain a steady energy level.
Hydration Keep everyone hydrated.
Adapt to Situations Travel rarely goes exactly as planned. Be prepared to adapt your plans if needed. If a child is feeling restless or upset, consider taking an unscheduled break or switching up activities.
Embrace Spontaneity Sometimes the best travel memories come from unexpected detours or spontaneous activities. Be open to exploring new places or taking a longer break if the mood strikes.
7. Use Technology Wisely
Download Apps There are numerous travel apps designed for families that can help with navigation, fnding rest areas, or suggesting kid-friendly activities along the route. Some apps even offer travel games or educational content.
Screen Time Limits While technology can be a lifesaver during long trips, it’s important to set limits. Encourage a balance between screen time and other activities, such as reading or playing games.
8. Support
Emotional and Physical Divide tasks between yourself and Partner, don’t take it all on yourself. Team work makes the dream work…
Physical Infatable foot rest for the car journey, plain pal for fights. Just confrm with your chosen airline if this accessory is allowed.
MommaBear, you have got this! Long-distance travel with kids doesn’t have to be daunting. With the right planning and a few creative strategies, you can turn a potentially stressful experience into a fun family adventure. Remember to be patient, stay fexible, and embrace the journey. Happy travels!

I attended such an inspiring event hosted by Working Mama Magazine, founded by Elize Fisher who was brave and confdent enough to share her story. A story that many of us might resonate with but fnd ourselves bandaging it with a smile. This wellness day was such a great platform for a really deep dive into our mental well-being.I’m sure we have all used the terms “self-love”, “worthy”, “body positivity”, to name a few, but after listening to these extraordinary women speak, I realised just how diffcult it can be to tap into “speaking positive” about yourself. Do we proclaim these attributes or affrmations because they are trending? Because social media tells us to? Self-love is a wonderful thing, and it takes time discovering who you are and what you love about yourself. Pastor Judy, the breast cancer survivor really struck every chord of me, especially having faced a scare myself 3 years ago. I was also able to relate to her entire journey as it was verbatim to what my mom went through, and who is now a cancer free warrior after a mastectomy. Ladies, please do regular self-examinations, embrace wellness in every form, and work on loving every part about yourself.

AskCandzCoach
Your burning health questions answered.
Is gut health a real thing?
100%! Gut health isn’t just a trendy term; it’s legit and has a big impact on how we feel daily. Your gut is home to billions of good (and bad) bacteria working hard to help you digest food, support your immune system, and keep your mood in check. When things in the gut get out of balance—maybe from stress, poor diet, or even antibiotics—it can lead to all kinds of issues like bloating, low energy, skin fare-ups, and more.
So yes, gut health is very real! Adding fbre, probiotics, and plenty of water can make a world of difference in feeling your best.
What's the best skincare to do when pregnant?
Great question! Pregnancy is a time when many women go organic with skincare, and for good reason—your baby absorbs everything you do, even what you put on your skin. So, keeping it natural and simple is key. So, we want to keep things gentle and safe. Ingredients like hyaluronic acid are amazing for hydration, keeping your skin soft without any risks. Vitamin C helps brighten skin and can improve tone safely. And a gentle exfoliating product containing glycolic acid (if approved by your doctor) can smooth out skin texture.
Just steer clear of anything with harsh chemicals. And SPF is non-negotiable, as skin can be extra sensitive to sunlight during pregnancy. Keeping it simple is the way to go!
Can hormones cause anxiety?
They sure can. Hormones have a big say in how we feel, and when they shift—during menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or menopause—it’s not unusual to feel more anxious or not quite yourself. Hormones like estrogen and progesterone, for example, play a role in mood regulation, so when they fuctuate, it’s common to feel a bit off.
Things like regular exercise, a balanced diet, and stress management can help keep hormones more stable and ease anxiety. If anxiety feels unmanageable, though, it's worth chatting with a healthcare provider to get a plan that supports your mental and physical wellness.
