onday 5th October 2015 and a creditable 70+ members turned up for the El-Valle meeting at Camping Bar. Carol opened the meeting somewhat late at 19.55, welcomed all who were there and in particular one new member.

She went on to say that Stewart would be standing down as secretary at the end of this years’ term of office and any volunteers to fill this role would be very welcome as would anyone with storage space, garage etc. that could be used to store El-Valle equipment whilst it was not in use.

The usual information about trips and events was given and in particular advance information about the "big" El-Valle trip. It would be a 3 night 4 day trip to Cadiz/Jerez from

17th May 2016 to 20th May 2016. Final costing not yet available, but would be in the region of €210 to €250. pp Tonights speaker, Geoff Clayton, a retired newspaper reporter formally with the News of the World was introduced and after a short break to replenish drinks etc he went on to recount his experiences in the News Business, Geoff started out on local papers but whilst with them would submit articles to the National's and eventually he was invited by the News of the World to "do" some shifts with them!! There was no formal interview as such.

Geoff went on to enlighten us about how sometimes stories involving "well known" people/celebrities could actually be "buried" and if these reports had come out at the time then

several well known personalities could have been held to account long before they eventually were.

He also touched on the phone hacking scandals that embroiled his paper and of his own personal distaste for that activity.

Geoff answered questions from the floor (no he was not drunk) and finished his revelations at 21:00 when he was thanked for his time and interesting accounts.

It was now time for the "box" and the prize on offer was €655.00. None of the five tickets drawn managed to marry up to the correct key and prize rolls over.

Carol closed the meeting at 21:05 and as usual our thanks to the committee for their efforts.

LANDMARK COURT CASE BY JOHN MUNNS First Success for New Law

T

he five family homes belonging to English pensioners in Oria, Almeria, which were threatened with demolition, will not be demolished; The Public Prosecutor decided to waive the demolition order, mindful of the recent law regarding buildings owned by buyers who bought in good faith.

This change to the Public Ministry’s charges , and the application of undue extended delay to reduce the terms of imprisonment and fines demanded for the promotors and builders for contravening planning laws, has made an out of court settlement possible. This was ratified in Almeria’s Criminal Court 2.

British couple), stressed the importance of the decision, and hopes that it will be followed in similar cases awaiting judgement, so that step by step the problem could be resolved to the benefit of everyone.

In the same vein, Julián Cazorla, the lawyer for another of the accused, also stated that the solution found in this case has opened the door for future cases. He further said that above all, the result relieved his foreign clients, who in reality were the victims, from their anxiety.

So at last there is a recognition that owners, who bought their houses in good faith and then are threatened with having their homes demolished, are the victims of a heartless bureaucratic injustice.

It is also clear that we would still be waiting for a solution to this problem if it were not for the formation and unceasing hard work of the associations like SOHA and AUAN. With the help of lawyers

like Gerardo Vázquez, they lobbied and demonstrated to make the changes to Spanish law in both the Criminal Code and the Civil Code.

The Oria settlement would surely never have been made without those changes to the law. Anyone who has hired a lawyer to solve these problems will realise that this progress has not come cheaply.

Your 25€ annual fee per household is now looking like incredible value!

In essence the change to the law gives a Judge the right to insist (when ordering a demolition of a house which was bought in good faith) that compensation is paid to owners before the demolition.

The Priors, whose house was demolished 7 years ago, are still waiting for the compensation to which an EU court ruled that they were entitled. Under the present law it is hoped that owners who bought in good faith will never again suffer the Prior’s appalling injustice.

t will be seen having read the accompanying information about Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) that this is not as uncommon as we would like to think. I personally know of two people who suffered this, one died and the other, a good friend of 30 years plus, survived but was told by his surgeon that he was very lucky to have survived the ambulance journey to hospital and it was nothing short of a miracle that he survived the surgery.

For those of you still with medical connections in England it is

straightforward, i.e. follow the instructions in the report.

For those living in Spain I have enquired from my G.P. and was told that the Spanish Health system does not do automatic screening and there would have to be a reason for you to be referred.

I enquired at Clinica Rincon, (Torre del Mar) and was told that they could do the procedure after consultation with one of their family doctors.

Price for whole procedure, consultation and scan would be €144.00. I had the consultation and then a week later the scan.

Forget artistic licence, I had an attractive young lady. (Refer to accompanying info) It is important to stress what you are wanting as the ultra sound scan would normally be for other organs, liver, pancreas, prostate and such. I received information on all these as well as an all clear re AAA. Ensure that the GP you see speaks good English, unless your Spanish is up to standard. This also applies to the radiographer doing the scan, and tell her/him, before the scan, what your prime reasons are for the scan.

ABDOMINAL AORTIC ANEURYSM 1 in 70 male over the age of 65 has an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). 54 in every 10,000 males have an aneurysm that is, or will be, of such a size that surgery is advisable. In 80% of cases where an aneurysm ruptures the patient dies on the way to hospital or before a repair can be effected. In most cases there are no symptoms associated with an aneurysm. ************************** There is a simple scan available that can identify the problem and it is advisable to all males in the year coming up to their 65�� birthday.

Those who were over 65 whn the scheme was rolled out are stil entitled to a scan but must request it. (For women who may ask why they don’t get a routine scan the two reasons are that generally it doesn’t show up in women before the age of 75 and it is six times less common in females compared to males) The scan is a simple ultrasound examination that doesn’t even require one to undress, merely pull up or unbutton the shirt and takes no longer than 20 minutes. (The glossy brochure which accompanies the appointment shows it being carried out by an attractive young lady but that’s artistic licence) You are either told the result at once and it is either: 1. Normal - aorta less than 3 cm wide - 69 cases in every 70 (You will not be tested again as an aneurysm develops so slowly that the chances of one appearing and growing to a dangerous size is extremely remote) 2. A small aneurysm - between 3 cm and 4.4 cm. You will be

invited back for further scans every 12 months to check if it is getting bigger.

3. A medium aneurysm - between 4.5 cm and 5.4 cm wide. You will be invited back for further scans every 3 months to check I it is getting bigger 4. A large aneurysm - 5.5 cm or bigger (Approximately 1 in every 1,000 males screened) You will be referred to a specialist team within 14 days to have more scans and a discussion about treatment usually an operation.

5. In some cases the person carrying out the scan cannot see the aorta clearly and in these cases you will e invited to have another scan, usually on a different day.

There are two possible operations.

The first is open surgery, where the aorta in the area near the aneurysm is replaced with a strong plastic tube that should last the rest of one’s life. The second, an option in some cases, is an endovascular aneurysm repair where a stent is fitted via the groin. If a person chooses not to have the operation, or whose health precludes such a procedure, then conservative measures are taken, such as attempting to lower blood pressure, reduce weight, etc.

For men who were over 65 when the scheme was rolled out in their area and want screening you can request one on a self referral basis and there is no need to go to your doctor. Go to www.aaa.screening.nhs.uk and then select “Information for the public” from the top bar and “Screening where you live” from the menu of all areas in England to apply to online who will then send you an appointment somewhere near

where you live. (Remember to include name, address and contact details - if you know it also include your 10 digit NHS number - the reply may take a few weeks.) For those living elsewhere than in England the “Screening where you live” page also has information of the procedure in other parts of the UK. It is not available for those living abroad.

There are restrictions that may apply in relation to driving vehicles and piloting planes.

CARS: No need to report to DVLA until the aneurysm reaches 6.5 cm when your license is suspended until treated when it will be reinstated.

PCV and LGV: Any aneurysm must be reported to DVLA Licence is suspended when the aneurysm reaches 5.5 cm and will be reinstatd after treatment.

PRIVATE PILOTS: No restrictions if the aneurysm is below 5 cm. If between 5 cm and 5.5 cm the pilot is restricted to a dual control plane and must be accompanied by a safety pilot. If above 5.5 cm the pilot is deemed to be unfit to fly.

NOTE: - The scan does not detect thoraic aortic aneurysms as there is no simple check available. It is available by a CT scan privately, often as part of a full health check, for between about £950 and £1500 - but again the vast majority of scans will be normal.

The scan does not check for other conditions as the technicians are trained to look for aneurysms only.

s thought, “In the style” of Alfred Stieglitz wasn’t that popular. His infatuation with cloud is well documented, hence the majority of entries being

clouds.

Why do we do “In the style of” projects? It encourages members to look at the techniques and compositions of the so called “Masters” of photography. I will admit to scratching my head at why some of these photographers are so revered, especially the aforementioned Alfred Stieglitz, but hey, each to their own.

October’s challenge is “Colour popping”, a technical subject we’ve tackled before. Colour Popping is an effect in which the focal point(s) of an image is highlighted in colour, the rest of the image being in tones of black and white. As long as you have the time and the necessary software, it’s an easy process.

Interested in photography? Why not come and join us, we are a friendly group of people of differing abilities from novice to the more proficient, it’s all about learning from each other, but more importantly, enjoying photography.

ardly a week goes by that we do not have a problem with Remote Controls!!! So you have changed the batteries and its still a bit slow so you beat the kids with it and get angry and throw it at the TV. The TV companies who supply them usually only warranty them for six months so they are aware of the problems.

So what do we do. First thing give it a regular clean. get an old toothbrush and brush all

around the buttons.Next open the battery compartment and look at the terminals. Give it a good brush as well and check for contamination from leaky batteries. Make sure they hold the batteries tight, give the spring a tweak. If you are using rechargeable batteries they will reduce the performance of the remote control as they only run at 1.2 volts each and normal alkaline batteries run at 1.5volts each. The most problems come with pets as

the hairs will eventually get in the body of the remote and case problems so put them in a clear plastic bag. They still work!

Finally if they still have problems bring them to us at the Tuesday Market and we will do our best to repair them or replace them.

So go on dig out all those remotes a finally give them a birthday.

El valle 100 walk th

EL VALLE COMPLETES ITS 100�� WALK! El Valle’s centenary walk took place on Thursday 1 October when 41 of us undertook the three-hour walk from Chilches to Malaga via Rincon de La Victoria, Cala del Moral, the cement factory, El Palo and Pedregalego.

The sight of such a large crowd waiting on the prom prior to kick-off attracted the attention of a representative from the Ayuntamiento who enquired as to our purpose. When reassured that we were weren’t about to stage a demo or claim refugee status he was happy to dismiss us as just another mad bunch of Brits and off we went.

The route, which was between 15 and 18 kilometres (depending on whose iPhone was telling the truth), took us along part of the disused rail track that ran from 1908 to 1968 carrying passengers and goods along the

coast. The sandy beaches, white Jurassic limestone cliffs and Moorish watch towers provided a stunning backdrop for anyone who wasn’t too busy talking to notice their surroundings while the surviving tunnels gave us some shade along the way. The shared pedestrian and cycling trails caused several near misses and the no-lock municipal loos ensured that the ladies didn’t linger longer than necessary during bathroom breaks.

To their credit they quickly rustled up two large tables, which filled the entire inside space, and provided us with a very good meal. Extra booze provided by El Valle to commemorate the auspicious occasion and complimentary cava from the restaurant ensured that everyone left happy, in spite of aching feet, ready to take in the shops or stop off for ice cream or coffee before bussing it back to the cars.

At our half-time coffee/beer break at al Palo we spread ourselves over several bars while a brave accordion player unsuccessfully tried to drown out our chatter. We set off again with everyone going at their own pace but all 41 arrived safely at the restaurant at 3 pm for the menu del dia.

W

hat a fantastic range of trips we’ve covered this month. We started off the month with perfect quadding weather; not too hot, not too cold, just very pleasant and dry. Unfortunately, later in the month, rain did stop play on a couple of occasions.

The first trip of the month was a mystery tour. 6 quads arrived at Mis Tapitas and were led away by Angelika and Klaus who planned the route that took us across the dam and up to bar Ortega along on a different track from the norm. Once we’d partaken in some refreshments there we back-tracked a little before going cross-country and taking in some amazing views of the mountains and some particularly beautiful countryside. Eventually, we crossed the A-356 and headed towards Mondron via more very rugged tracks that were new to the group. Unfortunately, some minor technical problems caused three unscheduled stops along the way but undeterred we continued on through Guaro and crossed the old railway track then followed more rough dirt tracks to arrive at the back of Periana school. We took further refreshments in Periana before departing for our separate journeys home.

Many thanks to Angelika and Klaus for all their efforts; it was an amazing day out.

What a triumphant day the following Wednesday turned out to be. Numerous attempts over the last couple of years had failed to get us up to the masts that overlook Algarrobo, Velez-Malaga and Torre del Mar to name but a few of the many places that we knew were visible from this view point. Our dear friend Chris Pegman had managed to get us there some three or four years ago but we had been unable to retrace the way until now. Using the new track we’d discovered last month, that followed the course of the Arroyo de Mineral to travel up the mountain behind Velez-Malaga, we finally found the trail that led to those elusive masts. A small landslide had affected one part of the track but in general it was in a fair state of repair and was a great deal easier to traverse than many of those we encounter on a regular basis. It was a beautiful day and the views were as spectacular as anticipated but we didn’t have a proper camera with us that day. These photos were taken with my very low spec mobile phone.

They’re not too vibrant but they do go some way to portray the extent of the views from up there, though nothing could compare to the jubilation we felt at finally having conquered that which had remained out of our reach for so long.

A 105km round trip to the “Moonscape” was our treat for the following Sunday. A firm favourite but rarely visited location. 6 quads left Mis Tapitas and arrived at the Zafarraya pass via Venta Baja and Venta Alta. A left turn towards Zafarraya and then a right turn took us onto the rocky trails that traverse the outstanding scenery of the Polje de Zafarraya. The pictures show how it came by this nickname.

Just 3 quads set off from Pasada de Granadillos for another Wednesday trip destined for Restaurante Las Pippas, at Algarrobo Costa. We used the new route we’d discovered up to the masts then travelled via Arenas, where we stopped for some refreshments, then out the other side of Arenas and up to Castillo de Bentomiz and down the steep concrete tracks towards our destination. As usual the menu del dia there was excellent.

We do like to visit Alfarnatejo at least once a month and this month was no exception. 4 quads followed the normal route that took us over the dam and then left onto a dirt track beyond the Camping Bar. The campo tracks here are mainly wide and in a very good state of repair giving us more of an opportunity to take in the excellent views of the surrounding countryside and the delightful fragrances of the wild plants and herbs now growing prolifically after recent rains As the pictures show the terrain here is totally different to anywhere else in the Axarquia. Despite the rain the tracks between Rio Gordo and Alfarnatejo were in very good condition and even navigating through the gorge itself was far easier than it has been in the past. It was very stony but the stones fill the deep ruts that once made this a fairly challenging ride. As luck would have it we reached our destination without any mechanical problems, which have often plagued us on this route. A delightful menu del dia at Restaurante Los Pirineos once again provided extraordinary value for money. Our route back home took us via concrete and tarmac roads, through Alfarnate, then along the winding, steep descent down to Periana that has the most spectacular views of Lake Vinuela, in the midst of its confine of mountains, with Velez-Malaga and the sea beyond. Meson Sara in Puente de don Manuel served as our final refreshments and de-brief stop. Are you interested in joining our friendly group? It’s a really fun way to explore the area.

ust to update you on our house sale, we are back on the market due to the Ayuntamiento not replying to our lawyer, after 5 or 6 months, and being told by the town architect we needed an architect to confirm no further building had taken place since 20006, when we were registered. This document is now with the College of Architects in Malaga for stamping (we hope).

Then what? It really seems to be a game that you just have to play along with.

Back in September, we met up with a Belgian friend in the Ardennes and Bob was able to go out before breakfast with her to find the elusive Nutcracker Nucifraga caryocatactes.

They are seen during September when they harvest the hazel nuts and take them, maybe 7 or 8 in their crop at a time, and bury them in the chosen spruce forest nearby. The bird is a similar size to a Jay Garrulus glandurias and they work on their own, or possibly as a pair, in order to store sufficient nuts to provide food for the year. This year was a poor year, partly because it was an early crop, but many of the nuts we saw had a hole in from a grub of some

sort and you could see that many nuts were discarded as being either empty or damaged. During our visit there were eleven sightings in three of four different areas, but many other varieties of birds were seen during the week.

Once the Nutcrackers have gathered their food, they take to the forests and are rarely seen until the following harvest. I only wish that Bob had been equally successful in his quest to see the Wallcreeper Tichodramadidae, when we visited the Hecho valley in the north of Spain in July. This is also a difficult bird to find, about the same size as a Nuthatch Sitta europaea and a long beak for probing the cliff faces for insects at 1000 – 3000m altitude.

Last week we were in Huelva province for 4 days and stayed in great apartments in Ayamonte on the Costa Luz Esui Golf Complex where for 16 euros/day we had amazing evening meals and breakfast or pack ups. For me the highlight was probably when we came across oysters being washed and packed ready to send to Sevilla, and a friend and Bob were given a taster whilst there. We left with 2

dozen oysters to enjoy that evening in El Rocio before we all went for an evening meal. They went down well with a glass of white wine, provided by one of the party, and a dash of lemon from my store, and the last 4 oysters were given to a delighted group of Spanish holiday makers who had been watching us for some time. I think it quite made their day as well!

We are hoping to explore the coastline on our cycles this winter, as I get more confident after not riding for many years. The first time I went out on my own I had some Spanish guy chat me up as I walked over the local bridge. They just never miss a chance, do they girls?

We will also continue to enjoy our dancing and quite envy my brother, at times, when he goes off as a Dance Host on the cruise liners.

Make the most of whatever you are able to do and enjoy life in these beautiful surroundings. We are lucky not to be caught up in all the many problems around the world, and we often forget to give thanks for that.

It beats the alternative!

n Friday 23�� October we had a supper and film night which was attended by 29 members and guests. We started with a supper of chili or meatballs, which seemed to go down well, we even had a volunteer to clean the bowl with a slice of bread, don´t worry Martin I won’t mention your name.

Next came the film 100 Foot Journey starring Helen Mirren, the film was set in rural France

and was about two totally different restaurants, a Michelin star French restaurant, run by Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren) and a family run Indian restaurant who´s chef is a young Indian man (Manish Dayal) who was taught to cook by his late mother.

There was lots of laughter from the audience and even some tears.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the film and we even had chocolate

éclair sweets and liquorice allsorts being passed around while the film was running. All this for 5€ for members, what a bargain.

Councillors and Consulate discuss how to improve support for expat Brits in Alicante From:

Councillors for EU residents, many from towns with a high number of British and other non-Spanish nationals, today met officials from the British Consulate to discuss ways to offer greater support to British nationals.

They looked at the benefits and issues that come from having a high number of British nationals living in their towns. All the councillors agreed that Brits are more likely to volunteer than their Spanish counterparts and as such are a really positive addition to where they live, although more still needs to be done to help them learn Spanish and encourage them to register on the padron.

The meeting at the Red Cross headquarters in Alicante also gave councillors the chance to learn about a recently-signed collaboration agreement between the British Embassy and Red Cross, which seeks to enable easier access to Red Cross services for English speakers and encourage volunteering within the British community. The Red Cross announced that an English speaking email and phone number for enquiries and contact will soon be up and running as part of this agreement.

Councillors said a priority for them was- working closely with local charities and English speaking associations to help their residents. Many of them explained that they already do this, and those that didn't commit to making contact with the ones in their area to work together and give them more support.

Sarah-Jane Morris, British Consul for the Alicante region, said: “Getting the councillors together has been really beneficial. We have both looked at how to better support British nationals by working together, and learnt from each other and shared ideas. We want to ensure British nationals and English speaking charities get the best possible support from their town h a l l s ."
