Welcome to the April Newsletter The clocks went forward Saturday start of Spring the lovely Almond blossom is blooming over by the Lake. Also all you Mums hope you had a lovely Mothers Day. April is a busy month we have our AGM I am stepping down after two years as Chairperson I would like to say a big thank you to the commit-

tee for all their hard work this past year Jane and Pauline are also stepping down on the committee a big thank you to both of you for your input over these past few years Also to all our new and old members without you we wouldn't have such a good club in joining us this last year on the great trips that the

committee has put together for you.

We have the Easter Holidays approaching this is a very important celebrations for the Spanish with processions happening through the streets of many Towns and City's if you haven't been to see the processions it is very impressive .

First Monday of March and of course the night of the El-Valle meeting!!!!!

At 7.30pm Carol opened the meeting by welcoming new members and giving a general overview of events held and events forthcoming before handing over to Sue who provided more detail and told us about our entertainment for the evening, The Barbers Shop Choir, Cantaremos.

At 7.45pm Sue announced a short break to replenish glasses and book the various social events that were on offer.

Prior to the choir commencing their performance at 7.55pm Sue announced that there only four places left on the El-Valle Carmona Trip in June so it was proving very popular.

The choir commenced singing at 7.55pm and with a varied selection of well known songs kept us all entertained for a good 30 minutes with 10 songs in all.

After the choir it was time for "The Box" and there was â‚Ź280.00 on offer if someone chose that all elusive key!!!!

No one did and the prize rolls over.

Approximately 70 members had turned out for the evening, a very good

attendance, and I am sure that we were all entertained by the choir and appreciated the effort they put in to entertain us.

The meeting was closed at 8.40pm and thanks again to all who participated in making the evening a success.

Note The next meeting, April 3rd, is also the AGM and if anyone is interested in standing for the committee you will be most welcome. More information can be obtained from any of the committee members either via the website or at the El-Valle meeting point, Meson Sara, Puente don Manuel, on a Friday Morning.

New committee members with new ideas will ensure a strong healthy future for El-Valle and also take some of the pressure of the existing committee who continue to do a commendable job on behalf of the membership.

Motril rum and sugar trip by jane johnston

On Thursday 16th March about thirty eager people climbed aboard the bus for a day out to Motril and Salobrena. We received a warm welcome from Chris Wishart who outlined the plan for the day. First stop was a coffee break out of doors in the sunshine and with a view to Salobreña castle atop of a prominent hill and along the coast back to Almuñecar.

Our first visit was near the port of Motril at the rum bodega of Ron Montero. This developed in 1963 after many years of sugar production by Francisco Montero Martin.

In the entrance area we were given an account of the processes involved in making the rum from growing the sugar cane, production of molasses, and the distillation and fermentation of the alcohol and then ageing in oak barrels. Our guide, in very good English, showed us some of the early machines used and explained the pumping of the barrels to circulate the ageing rum (the production of which was developed after environmental and economic conditions affected sugar production). Finally, we tasted two rums - the one year old ‘white’ used for mixing and cocktails and the five year old mature brown rum - both available to purchase as well as the

intermediate three year old light brown rum.

We then proceeded inland, but still in Motril, to the Pre-industrial Museum of Sugar at Ingenio de la Palma. Our guide here, in English, provided a very full explanation to help us understand the processes and technological evolution of the sugar industry in Motril and surrounding area and its connection with the social and environmental history. The museum was developed after some projected building work excavation uncovered the remains of a 16th century sugar factory. In the museum there was a series of visual interpretation displays, the re-creation of pre-industrial processes from the archeological evidence, reproductions of old technology, models, audio-visual displays, and explanatory panels which together provided a full explanation of sugar production

between the 10th and 18th centuries from cane to ‘loaf’ sugar the ‘wealth’ of Motril.

After leaving he museum it was time for lunch a the the Salobreña Hotel.

A full buffet was provided with a choice of salads, fish and meats, vegetables, desserts and fresh fruit as well as wine and water at each table. When everyone had eaten, many ventured into the hotel grounds to admire the extensive coastal views until a few heavy raindrops dropped the temperature. As the hotel location and weather change did not encourage adventure the bus departed early for its return trip.

Chris commented that most of us would have forgotten what we had seen by next week if not tomorrow!

Indeed, if I had known that I would be writing this I could have made a few notes so … apologies for any inaccuracies and missing vital details such as the names of our excellent guides at both locations.

Information from phillip paviour Thought I would enlighten you (and members) on a couple of subjects which I have been involved in. a, If stopped by the Authorities and have NO doubt they will be aware of your residency/non residence status, you may just be lucky if you have passed the 2 year resident threshold to be warned & not fined!. Getting/changing to a

Spanish licence is SO easy albeit long winded. A word of warning ALL of your driving details will be verified by Swansea DVLA (Age, ability to drive & categories applicable). b, We have just renewed our EHIC cards (ran out in Dec 2016). If you call the number on the card (Newcastle) one of the automated questions is "Are you a UK resident?".

Just say NO and you will still be put through to an operative who will take the details off your existing card and our 2 individual cards arrive here a day under 2 weeks later!!. If you look on the NHS.co.uk website it reads as if ONLY UK residents qualify so best to call. Direct No available.

March walk by jane johnston On Thursday 9th March 2017 twenty two El Valle members assembled at the lower end of Viñuela village at the car park with the mill stones, hidden by the excited walkers in this photo.

The walk around the area of Viñuela was led by Douglas and Jane Johnston. This walk was originally attempted in both 2015 and 2016 but on both occasions the weather intervened and the walk was postponed. On those occasions the few assembled walkers went to the restaurant Venta la Viña for coffee and were given a ‘virtual’ walk through the streets of Viñuela and round through the campo back to Venta la Viña by Douglas who described the expected views on the route. The group were joined later by other ‘walkers’ for lunch and social chat.

This year was to be different. There was no rain; we were blessed with blue, cloudless skies and temperatures quite unexpected in early March well into the mid twenties. It would be thirsty work. The route may even be varied!

The walk started at the park in Viñuela and the route took us up through the streets of the village, avoiding the traffic, to cross the old road to Velez Malaga. We then continued uphill through the campo past a farm with friendly horses and further up to look back at the vista of the village. A short downhill stretch towards Rio Bermuza but then left and uphill towards Puente don Manuel. Here we saw Mt. Maroma very clearly and many very yellow shrubs all along the wayside.

We stopped several times in the shade to cool off and take on essential water. The landscape was looking spectacular.

As we approached the steep ‘spine’

walk up towards the radio mast at Alcaucin some walkers were getting worried but Douglas took us off to the right in a loop past a goat farm (but the goats were out) and back to come down the same track. We then went across the campo through the olives towards the urbanisations along the old VelezMalaga road then continued along the campo tracks back to Viñuela village and to the restaurant Venta la Viña where we enjoyed plenty social chat and a good menú del día.

I have written on many occasions about Spanish Terrestrial TV. Well have you ever tried it. As we know the Spanish are heavy into Sport and many of the channels show sporting events and some channels are dedicated to Sport. With the Formula One season about to start they will be showing all the races and in a number of cases the Whole weekend and all the practice sessions.

When the original programmes are in English or that other language American they will be dubbed over in Spanish. The original sound track is still there and can be changed back to English with the Audio button on your TV remote.

We are able to fit and install the Spanish antennae for you or supply a Do it yourself kit so come and talk to us to find out how. Great for learning a bit of Spanish and put up the Sub Titles.

On the south coast of Spain you can expect to get between 40 and 100 channels depending where you live.

We at currently selling a large number of the new satellite boxes that we have been advertising this year.

Please be aware that there is some Malware associated with the Tech-

nomate and Vu series of satellite boxes. This can create a virus in the boxes. Please try to use software that you are aware has been tested for problems and you know where it has come from.

Just a last comment about HDMI cables and connections. It appears that most of the manufactures are slowly removing the SCART connections from TVs and other devises such as DVDs etc. Please check before you make any future purchase that you have all the type of connections you need. Try to make it HDMI as it will be around for some time.

Lake vinuela photographic club

The Lake Viñuela Photograghic Club was previously known as the El Valle Asociación Photo Group and was formed in June 2008 by a nucleus of ten members from that group. In order to not contravene the rules of the Asociación and to accommodate interest from other photographers that were not their members, the group decided to become an independent organisation in February 2012.

Each year since then it has entered into an Inter-Club Challenge event with three other clubs - from Nerja, Benalmadena and Alhaurin.

After coming fourth, third, second equal and then second last year, the club achieved top spot at this year’s event, which was hosted by the club at the Hotel La Viñuela.

Here, the club’s President, Doug Poplett, displays the Trophy with other club members outside their regular monthly meeting venue, La Era restaurant.
