Jennifer O’Connor of Dare 2 Design
At Dare 2 Design, Jennifer O'Connor fearlessly pushes boundaries to create luxurious, deeply personal homes that bring her clients' dreams to life, exemplifying her innovative vision and dedication to improving lives through design.
When you step into a home designed by Jennifer O'Connor, owner of the luxury interior design firm Dare 2 Design, you immediately sense that every detail, from the tile layout to the lighting to the custom furniture, has been thoughtfully curated to bring the homeowner's vision to life. Jennifer’s refined yet eclectic designs exude both luxury and livability—a balance she achieves by intimately understanding her clients and guiding them to push their design boundaries.
“I’ll bring my clients to the edge of their desired design, but I’ll never push them over. It’s OK to move a little outside their comfort zone," Jennifer explains. Her role, as she sees it, is to be the keeper of the overall vision, ensuring every decision aligns with the ultimate goal of creating a dream home that exceeds expectations.
Jennifer's design philosophy has been shaped by over two decades in the interior design industry. In 2001, she purchased Expressions Custom Furniture, a franchise furniture store owned by Century Furniture. It wasn’t long before she began challenging their concept and pursued going out on her own. Driven by her passion for design, she began to focus her talents to reach a larger audience.
(promotional content)
She realized the importance of in-home consultations to truly solve design challenges, planting the seeds for what would soon become Dare 2 Design.
Today, Dare 2 Design is known for its luxury, full-service residential projects, from custom furnishings to new home construction. Jennifer relishes the opportunity to be involved from the very beginning, collaborating closely with the homeowner, architect and builder to bring a shared vision to fruition. "The ideal time to engage a designer is at the beginning of a project when the architect is putting together the design of their house," Jennifer says. "At this stage in the project, my job is to become the liaison between the architect, the builder and the client." She says it’s important to listen and understand the ideas coming from these sources. “That way, I am able to bring them together to create a home that becomes better than anyone imagined.”
This early involvement allows Jennifer to mastermind each element of the home, from the functional layout to the material selections to the final furnishings. Her comprehensive approach ensures a cohesive design, where each component harmonizes to create a stunning home. "The sum of the individual ideas is greater than the individual ideas standing alone."
Jennifer recognizes that the myriad of decisions in the homebuilding process can be overwhelming for clients. “The fear of making a wrong decision is very
real for my clients because it can be costly as well as disappointing," she shares. Because of this, she prioritizes establishing trust from the outset, investing time upfront to fully understand her clients' needs and design aspirations, and forming a partnership that can weather any challenges that arise.
Jennifer finds inspiration for her designs through travel, regularly attending furniture and building shows across the country and the globe. Recent trips have taken her to Dubai, Turkey, Arizona and Barcelona, with Ireland next on the itinerary. By immersing herself in diverse design landscapes, she is able to infuse fresh, innovative ideas into her projects. "By traveling, I'm able to bring inspiration back to my clients here in the Midwest," Jennifer says, adding that historically, it can take years for new trends to make their way here from the West Coast, but now we're seeing it happen much faster because of social media.
While Jennifer keeps a pulse on trends, her designs are not beholden to them. Instead, she interprets current styles through the lens of each client's unique tastes, resulting in homes that feel individualized and timeless. “Luxury is more than aesthetic design. Luxury fabrics are beautiful in any space, but the soft touch of velvets or the reflective qualities of vibrant colors provides the feeling that this space is special,” says Jennifer, adding that some clients equate luxury with certain materials like marble because it reminds them of

Jennifer O’Connor—founder, visionary and principal designer at Dare 2 Design— brings a wealth of experience to her luxury interior design firm. While raising a family, she fearlessly pivoted careers, following her heart to purchase Expressions Custom Furniture in 2001. This venture laid the groundwork for the launch of Dare 2 Design in 2007, where Jennifer's talent, bold vision and unwavering dedication to her craft have solidified her reputation as a trailblazer in the design industry.

Dare 2 Design is located inside the Indiana Design Center, a vibrant hub for design-based businesses. This allows Jennifer and her team to stay at the forefront of design trends, collaborate with industry partners, and draw inspiration from the creativity that surrounds them.
resorts they’ve stayed at on their travels. Others find luxury in usable, comfortable spaces with the coziest sofa. And to some, it's just the feeling of a finished space. “Whatever that feeling is, I make it my mission to find it and help create it for each individual client."
This dedication to realizing each client's vision has earned Jennifer the trust of the area's top builders and architects, along with a loyal client base who appreciate her ability to dream big on their behalf while keeping the process fun and fulfilling. As Dare 2 Design continues to evolve, Jennifer remains passionate about her true purpose: improving lives through design. "I am passionately motivated to help people create spaces in their homes that increase their quality of living," she affirms. "By helping a client use a room they don't normally use or create a new space or build a home that allows them to be so proud of it and comfortable in it that they want to share it with family and friends, means our design mission was a success!"
By surrounding herself with a team of talented interior designers and an experienced business manager, Jennifer has built a solid foundation that brings creativity, cutting edge designs and an overall exceptional experience to every project. “My team is the cornerstone of Dare 2 Design’s success. Their unwavering commitment to collaboration, client satisfaction and support makes my job look easy. They are rockstars!” boasts Jennifer. She adds that her relationships within the industry are
equally essential. "My relationships with industry partners over the past 15 years have really allowed me to be able to do the projects that I want to do," she shares. These enduring partnerships include builders, architects, suppliers and artisans—a network of professionals who share Jennifer's passion for design and commitment to exceptional results.
For Jennifer, these relationships—built on trust, respect and shared passion—are more than just professional partnerships; they are the heart and soul of Dare 2 Design. "The business side of it is awesome and I love it," she says, "but the personal side and the relationships and the growth and what you give and get from that in return is huge."
Jennifer's boundless energy and passion for design are evident in every aspect of her work, but it's her deep sense of gratitude that truly fuels her success. This gratitude extends to her team, her industry partners and her clients, all of whom have played an integral role in bringing her vision for each project to life. For Jennifer, the opportunity to make a difference in people's lives through design is something she never takes for granted.

Fired Up
Sizzling Secrets for Successful Grilling with Joe Lazzara
Summer is here, and we’re bringing the heat with local butcher and grilling expert Joe Lazzara, owner of Joe's Butcher Shop in Carmel. From his favorite cuts of meat to pro tips and best practices, Joe’s insight will make you a grill master in no time.
Q: What do you love about grilling, as opposed to cooking indoors?
A: The correct answer would be the Maillard reaction — a complex process you get from grilling that turns a steak’s protein and sugars into that wonderful brown crust and unique flavor. But the truth for me is more about the friends and family gathering outside for great food!
Q: What's your personal favorite cut of meat to grill, and how do you prepare it?
A: New York Strip Steak. Pat it dry, season it well, let it rest covered on your counter until it's room temperature. Sear it on each side, then cook it indirectly until its internal temperature is 120-125 degrees. Let it rest, and it’s perfect every time.
Q: What is an underrated cut of meat you recommend?
A: No question—the Flap/Vacio Steak. On its own or marinated for fajitas, it's a great combo of beefy flavor and tenderness, and so versatile.
Q: Can you share a simple yet impressive rub or marinade recipe to try at home?
A: My brother Chuck’s chicken recipe is great. Mix half Italian dressing with half key lime juice and add brown sugar to taste. Marinate for 24 hours or more, then grill the chicken over indirect heat to prevent the sugars from burning and leaving the chicken juicy. It makes a memorable sandwich, especially with Cajun-spiced mayo.
Q: How do you recommend determining the doneness of grilled meats without cutting into them?
A: Use an instant-read digital meat thermometer and record your finish temperatures for use next time. In just half a grilling season, all your guests will call you a grilling pro!
Q: What are the biggest mistakes you see when grilling, and how can they be avoided?
A: Cooking cold meat (with the exception of burgers and chicken) and overcooking. Season steaks with salt first to reduce bacteria count as they come to room temperature. And use a meat thermometer.
Q: Do you have any tips for pairing grilled meats with side dishes or beverages?
A: Grilling a great piece of meat already gives you the heat, salt, and most of the time, the fat. Grilled meats demand acid, be it from your wine, a marinade, or a vinegar-based side. If your grilled meat is lean, a buttery or creamy side will be the perfect complement.
Q: What are your two go-to grill tips?
A: Always season your steaks first and let them come to room temperature before cooking. And use a meat thermometer and record your finish temperatures to dial in what you like next time.
A note from Joe…
Freshness, sustainability, pH, marbling, how the animal was fed and treated, and the lack of added hormones and antibiotics are facts that matter. They are facts that make a difference in how your proteins taste, perform, and affect your health. They are also facts you, as a consumer, can control only by purchasing from a trusted source. Great meals start with superiorly sourced proteins.

Joe's Butcher Shop, at 111 West Main Street in Carmel, has the best sustainably sourced meats to take your grill game to the next level.
