LOCAIS A VISITAR PLACES TO VISIT MURALHAS MEDIEVAIS As Muralhas de Évora têm conseguido manterem-se conservadas ao longo dos tempos, estando quase intocadas. D. Afonso IV de Portugal ordenou a construção no século XIV e, ainda hoje, transportam-nos a esses tempos imemoriais. Classificadas como monumento nacional desde 1922, são parte integrante do conjunto do Centro Histórico de Évora Património Mundial UNESCO.

MEDIEVAL WALLS The Walls of Évora have stayed well preserved over time and are almost untouched. King Afonso IV of Portugal ordered their construction in the 14th century, and even today they take us back to those ancient times. They have been a national monument since 1922 and are part of the Historic Center of Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

PRAÇA DO GIRALDO

GIRALDO SQUARE

É o verdadeiro coração da cidade, cercado por cafés e edifícios históricos. A construção remonta a 1571/1573, e tem o nome em honra a Geraldo Geraldes, o Sem Pavor, que conquistou Évora aos mouros em 1167 e nomeado por D. Afonso Henriques como alcaide da cidade e fronteiro-mor do Alentejo.

It is the true heart of the city, surrounded by cafés and historic buildings. The square was built between 1571 and 1573. It is named after Geraldo Geraldes, called “the Fearless”, who took Évora from the Moors in 1167. He was made city mayor and main defender of Alentejo by King Afonso Henriques.

AQUEDUTO DA ÁGUA DE PRATA

AQUEDUCT OF SILVER WATER

Esta obra renascentista atravessa parte da cidade e é Monumento Nacional desde 1910. A construção foi iniciada por ordem de D. João III, em 1532 e decorreu com a direção do arquiteto régio Francisco de Arruda. Foram feitos 18km de aqueduto desde a Herdade do Divor, onde vai abastecer de água, até ao centro de Évora.

This Renaissance structure crosses part of the city and has been a National Monument since 1910. The construction started by order of King João III in 1532 and was led by the royal architect Francisco de Arruda. The aqueduct is 18 km long, bringing water from the Herdade do Divor to the center of Évora.

TEMPLO DE DIANA

TEMPLE OF DIANA

Um dos monumentos romanos mais conhecidos de Évora e do País. Este exemplar é ainda dos mais bem preservados da Península Ibérica. De estilo coríntio, o templo romano foi construído no início do século I, d.C., e fica situado no centro histórico da cidade, mais precisamente, no Largo Conde de Vila Flor.

One of the most famous Roman monuments in Évora and in the country. This temple is also one of the best preserved in the Iberian Peninsula. In Corinthian style, the Roman temple was built at the beginning of the 1st century AD. It is located in the historic center of the city, more exactly at Largo Conde de Vila Flor.

PALÁCIO DE D. MANUEL

PALACE OF KING MANUEL

Nesta antiga residência real, da qual se destacam elementos góticos e manuelinos, passou grande parte da História de Portugal. Mandado construir por D. Afonso V, por volta de 1468, começou a ter maior dimensão no reinado de D. João II. Depois, no reinado de D. Manuel, nasceu um jardim e foram melhoradas as hortas e a Galeria das Damas. Espaço de Cortes e de nascimento de príncipes e princesas, fois ainda palco da representação de autos, incluindo seis peças do grande dramaturgo português Gil Vicente.

In this old royal residence, with Gothic and Manueline elements, much of Portugal’s history took place. It was ordered to be built by King Afonso V around 1468, and became bigger during the reign of King João II. Later, in the time of King Manuel, a garden was created, and the orchards and the Ladies’ Gallery were improved.

The palace was used for royal meetings and was the birthplace of princes and princesses.

It also hosted plays, including six by the great Portuguese playwright Gil Vicente.

CROMELEQUE DOS ALMENDRES

Este cromeleque é, certamente, um dos maiores e mais importantes monumentos megalíticos do mundo, e, diz-se, bem mais antigo do que o famoso Stonehenge. Originalmente, teria mais de uma centena de monólitos, pedras em granito de tamanhos diversos, dispostas em forma circular ou em elipse. Hoje, restam noventa e cinco em perfeito estado de conservação, sempre à espera de uma visita.

This cromlech is surely one of the biggest and most important megalithic monuments in the world, and it is said to be much older than the famous Stonehenge. Originally, it had more than one hundred granite monoliths, in different sizes, placed in a circle or oval shape. Today, ninety-five remain in very good condition, always ready for a visit.

UNIVERSIDADE DE ÉVORA

UNIVERSITY OF ÉVORA

Fundada em 1559 pelo Cardeal D. Henrique, a partir do já existente Colégio do Espírito Santo, começou a funcionar como Universidade do Espírito Santo por bula do Papa Paulo IV. Foi depois entregue à Companhia de Jesus, que a dirigiu ao longo de dois séculos. O magnífico claustro e os painéis de azulejos fazem as delícias dos turistas.

Founded in 1559 by Cardinal Dom Henrique, starting from the already existing College of the Holy Spirit, it began to work as the University of the Holy Spirit by a papal bull from Pope Paul IV. Later, it was given to the Jesuit Order, who managed it for two centuries. The beautiful cloister and the tile panels are very appreciated by tourists.

IGREJAS CHURCHES SÉ CATEDRAL DE ÉVORA

ÉVORA CATHEDRAL

Construção iniciada em 1186 e consagrada em 1204, foi concluída apenas em 1250. Toda em granito, é marcada pela transição do estilo românico para o estilo gótico. Teve melhorias durante os séculos XV e XVI, sendo dessa época o coro-alto, o púlpito, o batistério e o arco da Capela de Nossa Senhora da Piedade ou capela do Esporão (1529).

Construction started in 1186 and it was blessed in 1204, but only finished in 1250. Made all in granite, the building shows the change from Romanesque to Gothic style. It had improvements in the 15th and 16th centuries. From that time are the high choir, the pulpit, the baptistery, and the arch of the Chapel of Our Lady of Piety (also called Esporão Chapel, from 1529).

CAPELA DOS OSSOS

Igreja de arquitetura gótico-manuelina, foi construída entre os anos de 1480 e 1510, com decoração dos pintores régios Francisco Henriques, Jorge Afonso e Garcia Fernandes. Tem nave de abóbada ogival com os símbolos da cruz da Ordem de Cristo e os emblemas dos reis fundadores, D. João II e D. Manuel I. Sujeita a remodelação no final do século XV, as três naves foram substituídas pela única nave que ainda perdura, com planta em cruz latina, e coberta por uma abóbada gótico-manuelina, com cerca de vinte e quatro metros de altura.

Na Igreja de S. Francisco é possível encontrar esta capela feita de ossos humanos, que é um dos ex-líbris mais procurado pelos turistas. Erguida no século XVII por iniciativa de três frades franciscanos, a ideia era a de transmitir a mensagem da transitoriedade e fragilidade da vida humana. “Nós ossos que aqui estamos, pelos vossos esperamos”, é a frase icónica que se lê à entrada deste espaço.

CHURCH OF ST. FRANCIS This church, in Gothic-Manueline style, was built between 1480 and 1510. The decoration was made by the royal painters Francisco Henriques, Jorge Afonso, and Garcia Fernandes. It has a vaulted nave with the symbols of the Order of Christ and the emblems of the founding kings, João II and Manuel I. At the end of the 15th century, it was changed: the original three naves were replaced by the one that still exists today. It has a Latin cross shape and a Gothic-Manueline vault about twenty-four meters high.

CHAPEL OF BONES In the Church of St. Francis, you can find this chapel made of human bones, which is one of the most visited places by tourists. It was built in the 17th century by three Franciscan monks.

The idea was to show the message of how short and fragile life is. “We bones that are here, wait for yours,” is the famous sentence written at the entrance.

CHURCH AND CONVENT OF NOSSA SENHORA DA GRAÇA

Construídos entre 1537 e 1546, sob a responsabilidade do arquiteto Miguel de Arruda e colaboração artística de Nicolau Canterene, a igreja é também panteão da Casa Vimioso. A fachada tem composição inédita de elementos renascentistas e maneiristas, destacando-se os Meninos da Graça, estátuas de gigantes simbolizando as quatro partes do Mundo e o poder universal de D. João III. No Convento destaca-se o claustro, refeitório e escadarias com azulejos de finais do século XVII.

Built between 1537 and 1546, under the direction of architect Miguel de Arruda and with artistic help from Nicolau Canterene, the church is also the burial place of the Vimioso family.

The front has a unique mix of Renaissance and Mannerist elements. The “Boys of Grace” stand out — giant statues that represent the four parts of the world and the universal power of King João III. In the convent, the cloister, dining room, and stairways with tiles from the late 17th century are the most important parts.

MUSEUS MUSEUMS MUSEU DO RELÓGIO É um pólo do Museu do Relógio de Serpa e é um símbolo da região, pois diz-se que, no Alentejo, o tempo tem mais tempo. O ritmo dos alentejanos é mais pachorrento, dado à contemplação.

WATCH MUSEUM This is a branch of the Watch Museum of Serpa and is a symbol of the region, because people say that in Alentejo, time has more time. CENTRO DE ARTE E CULTURA EUGÉNIO DE ALMEIDA

EUGÉNIO DE ALMEIDA ARTS AND CULTURE CENTER

Foi em 2013 que abriu este espaço moderno após a remodelação do antigo Palácio da Inquisição. As exposições são essencialmente de arte contemporânea. São dois andares de exposições temporárias em salas modernas que ocupam 1.200 m2. No exterior, temos o Páteo de Honra, o Jardim Norte e o Jardim das Casas Pintadas, onde há ainda a galeria com uma pintura mural palaciana da segunda metade do século XVI e única no país.

This modern space opened in 2013 after the old Palace of the Inquisition was renovated.

The exhibitions are mainly of contemporary art.

There are two floors of temporary shows in modern rooms that cover 1,200 m². Outside, there is the Honor Courtyard, the North Garden, and the Painted Houses Garden, where you can also find a gallery with a palace-style wall painting from the second half of the 16th century — the only one of its kind in the country.

NATIONAL MUSEUM FREI MANUEL DO CENÁCULO

Tem arte sacra, arqueologia e obras da região.

Foi criado em 1915, com peças do diretor da Biblioteca Pública, Augusto Filipe Simões, que durante a década de 1870 foi recolhendo peças romanas, visigóticas e árabes que faziam parte do Palácio D. Manuel, do Templo Romano e da Praça do Giraldo.

It has religious art, archaeology, and works from the region. The museum was created in 1915, with pieces collected by the director of the Public Library, Augusto Filipe Simões. In the 1870s, he gathered Roman, Visigothic, and Arab items that came from the Palace of King Manuel, the Roman Temple, and Giraldo Square.

AÇORDA ALENTEJANA Este prato tão característico feito com coentros e alho esmagados e misturados. Leva ainda ovo escalfado em água com vinagre.

Segue-se ainda o pão. Deve ser acompanhado com um bom vinho local.

AÇORDA FROM ALENTEJO This very traditional dish is made with crushed coriander and garlic mixed together. It also has a poached egg in water with vinegar.

Then, bread is added. It should be served with a good local wine.

MIGAS COM CARNE DE PORCO

MIGAS WITH PORK

Basta enumerar os ingredientes para saber do que se fala: temos a banha e o alho. Há ainda massa de pimentão e, como diz o nome, a carne de porco. Acrescenta-se ainda os espargos verdes e o pão alentejano. O vinho a usar é o branco, acrescentando-se depois a pimenta e o sal. A gosto, claro.

Just saying the ingredients tells you what this dish is about: there is pork fat and garlic. It also has paprika paste and, as the name says, pork meat.

Green asparagus and Alentejo bread are added too. White wine is used, then pepper and salt — as much as you like.

ENSOPADO DE BORREGO

LAMB STEW

O bom do ensopado de borrego, dito um prato perfeito para dias mais frios, acaba por ser um prato mais característico do tempo da Páscoa e mesmo do Natal. Reza a tradição que deve ser servido sobre fatias de pão frito ou torrado. E, claro, deve ser ainda pão tradicional alentejano e, de preferência, de véspera.

This tasty lamb stew, known as a perfect dish for cold days, is usually eaten at Easter time and even at Christmas. Tradition says it should be served over slices of fried or toasted bread. And of course, it should be traditional Alentejo bread, preferably from the day before.

Esta sobremesa conventual típica do Alentejo é feita com gemas, açúcar, limão, amêndoas e chila. Diz-se que o nome e aparência têm origem numa alegada visita do rei D. Sebastião ao convento de Santa Helena do Calvário, em Évora e, sendo um convento pobre, só lhe puderam oferecer “pão ralo”, azeitonas e água.

This traditional dessert from Alentejo, made in convents, is made with egg yolks, sugar, lemon, almonds, and chila (a type of sweet gourd). It is said that the name and look come from a visit by King Sebastião to the convent of Santa Helena do Calvário in Évora.

Since the convent was poor, they could only offer him “thin bread”, olives, and water.
