Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival, scheduled for April 11-13, 2025, at Ponchatoula Memorial Park. This cherished event, which began in 1972 with just two nonprofit booths, has flourished into Louisiana's largest free harvest festival, now featuring over 50 nonprofit booths and drawing between 300,000 to 500,000 visitors over its three-day span.

The festival's primary mission is twofold: to honor the dedicated local strawberry farmers and to support community nonprofit organizations. Each booth in Memorial Park is operated by a local nonprofit, offering a diverse array of foods and crafts, with all proceeds directly benefiting their respective causes. This setup not only provides festival-goers with unique local flavors and products but also fosters a spirit of community support and engagement.

Festival Chairman Tristen Miller, a lifelong resident of Ponchatoula, reflects on his deep-rooted connection to the event:

Entertainment is a cornerstone of the festival, with this year's lineup boasting over 20 live performances across two stages, encompassing genres from country and

Rock to Cajun music. Complementing the musical acts are more than 20 carnival rides, ensuring fun for attendees of all ages. Traditional contests, such as the Egg Toss and the Strawberry Eating Contest, are scheduled for Sunday, April 13, inviting participants to engage in friendly and spirited competition.

A highlight of the weekend is the annual parade, set to commence at 9:30 AM on Saturday, April 12. The procession will feature festival royalty, local businesses, and community groups, weaving through the heart of Ponchatoula and embodying the town's vibrant spirit.

This year's festival royalty includes Louisiana Strawberry Queen LIII Alexis Nicole Lee, King Darryl Poché, Blossom Christine "Chris" Threeton, and Grand Marshal Rhonda Smith Sheridan. These individuals exemplify the festival's dedication to tradition, agriculture, and community service.

In a historic first, Queen Alexis Nicole Lee represented the festival in New Orleans' renowned Krewe of Bacchus parade on March 2, 2025. This inclusion not only elevates the festival's profile but also highlights the significance of Louisiana's strawberry industry on a larger stage.

For the first time, festival attendees will have the opportunity to savor the famed strawberry daiquiris from Paul’s Café on the festival grounds. Known for their homemade blend of fresh local strawberries, these daiquiris have been a staple at Paul's Café and are now available in souvenir cups, sports bottles, and even by the gallon.

The Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival is more than just an event; it's a celebration of community, tradition, and the sweet success of local agriculture. As April approaches, make plans to experience a weekend filled with music, rides, contests, and, of course, the finest strawberries Louisiana has to offer. For more information and a detailed schedule, visit the official festival website at lastrawberryfestival.com.

DREAMS DREAMS DREAMS FIELD FIELDOFOF FIELD OF GREG MARTEN: FROM BAT BOY TO HALL OF FAME

On a crisp afternoon at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field, Greg Marten stood where he has spent much of his life—on the baseball field. He didn’t waste a second as I approached before pointing out how much the facilities had changed since he first became head coach at Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU). “When I arrived, there were only three wooden and metal bleachers,” he recalled. “Now, look around—this is what corporate sponsorships, a vision, and a lot of help can do.”

Marten, a Hammond native, grew up about 200 yards away from Alumni on Blackburn Road. Baseball wasn’t just a pastime for him; it was a way of life. At just nine years old, he fell in love with the game and became a bat boy while Pat Kenelly was at the helm. That early exposure to the sport set the stage for a remarkable career that would span more than four decades.

Before joining SLU, Marten made a significant impact as the head baseball coach at Ponchatoula High School. Over nine seasons, he led the Green Wave to a remarkable 160-51 record, taking them to the state playoffs seven times and reaching the state finals once. His leadership earned him the State Class 3A Coach of the Year award in 1980 and four District Coach of the Year honors. His success at Ponchatoula helped lay the foundation for his career at SLU and solidified his reputation as one of the most respected coaches in the region.

As SLU’s head baseball coach from 1991 to 2002, Marten cemented his legacy. He led the Lions to seven winning seasons, two NCAA Regional appearances, and back-to-back 38-win seasons in 1992 and 1993—a school record. He was named Trans America Athletic Conference (TAAC) Coach of the Year twice, but his impact stretched far beyond the stats. Under his leadership, SLU baseball became a respected program known for its discipline, teamwork, and competitive spirit.

Tommy Bolton, a close friend and colleague, summed it up best: “Easily the best baseball coach I’ve ever been around. I had the pleasure of coaching against him and with him. It was a much better experience coaching with him.”

Marten wasn’t just about building a successful baseball program; he was about building young men. Many of his former players have gone on to professional careers, not just in baseball but in life—something he takes as much pride in as any championship. His coaching philosophy emphasized personal growth as much as athletic achievement, a mindset that helped shape countless student-athletes into wellrounded individuals.

Former player Tom Dawsey shared his thoughts:

“I met Greg Marten my senior year at Southeastern in 1987. During the year I spent with Coach Marten, I learned more about playing shortstop than in all the other years combined. I was fortunate that he came into my life, and I wish I had met him sooner.”

Marten kept his speech lighthearted when he was inducted into the Louisiana Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Rather than listing his accomplishments, he reflected, “I bet I’m the only baseball coach whose career started at nine years old and retired as a head coach 42 years later,” he joked. Yet behind the humor was an undeniable sense of pride in everything he’d built and the lives he’d touched along the way.

His fingerprints are all over SLU’s baseball program —not just in the record books but in the foundation of the facilities, the players he mentored, and the program he elevated. His legacy inspires current players and the community, a testament to the power of passion and perseverance.

For Hammond, Greg Marten is more than a Hall of Fame coach. He’s a hometown hero who turned a childhood passion into a lifetime of impact. And as he stood on that field, looking out at the stadium he helped build, it was clear—his legacy will stand for generations to come.

A Legacy A Legacy of Care of Care

For over 50 years, Harry McKneely & Son Funeral Home and Crematory has been more than just a funeral home—it has been a pillar of support for families navigating life’s most difficult goodbyes. Under the leadership of Lance Vicknair, a lifelong Tangipahoa resident with a heart for his community, the funeral home remains committed to serving with dignity, compassion, and an unmatched level of care. But what truly sets them apart? It’s not just their services—it’s the way they care, the way they connect, and the way they make every family feel like their own.

One of the most defining aspects of Harry McKneely & Son is their onsite crematory that is available for both their Hammond and Ponchatoula locations. Since 2008, they have been the only funeral home in Tangipahoa Parish to offer this service, ensuring that loved ones remain under the careful watch of trusted professionals from start to finish.

As cremation grows in popularity, families are looking for a seamless, stress-free process. Not too long ago, Harry McKneely & Son handled only a handful of cremations—five or six per year. Today, that number has surged, with 35-40% of families opting for cremation. Having an onsite crematory means families don’t have to worry about their loved one being transported elsewhere. Every step is handled with dignity, security, and the personal care that defines the McKneely standard.

FOR OVER 50 YEARS, HARRY MCKNEELY & SON HAS BEEN A PILLAR OF SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES NAVIGATING LIFE’S MOST DIFFICULT GOODBYES.

The Only On-Site Crematory in Tangipahoa Parish

A Team That Feels Like Family

At the core of the funeral home’s success is its team of 10 licensed funeral directors. These aren’t just funeral professionals—they’re people who have spent decades walking alongside families in their hardest moments. Many of them, including Lance himself, have been with the funeral home for years, building relationships that extend across generations.

When families walk through the doors of Harry McKneely & Son, they aren’t just another client—they’re neighbors and lifelong connections. In a world that often feels impersonal, this deep sense of community and care is what makes all the difference, from the very first phone call to the final farewell.

The Value of Pre-Planning

If there’s one thing Lance emphasizes to families, it’s the importance of pre-planning. Thinking ahead might not be easy, but it can make all the difference when the time comes. Pre-planning not only ensures that final wishes are honored, but it also helps families avoid rising costs due to inflation. More importantly, it spares loved ones from making difficult decisions during an already emotional time. It’s a gift of peace of mind, both financially and emotionally.

Perhaps the most reassuring part of choosing Harry McKneely & Son is knowing they’re always available. Day or night, weekday or weekend, their team is just a phone call away, ready to guide families through every step. From traditional services to personalized celebrations of life, they take care of every detail so families can focus on what truly matters—honoring their loved ones.

More Than Just a Funeral Home

At its heart, Harry McKneely & Son is more than a business—it’s a legacy of care, a family of professionals, and a place where every goodbye is met with grace, dignity, and the warmth of a community that truly cares. Recently, Harry McKneely & Son was recognized as Best in the Parish, a reflection of the trust and appreciation they have earned over the years.

Always Here, Always Available

With their on-site crematory, experienced staff, and unwavering commitment to serving local families, Harry McKneely & Son continues to be the name families trust in their most challenging moments. At Harry McKneely & Son, every service is more than just a ceremony—it’s a tribute to a life well lived and handled with the utmost care and respect.

Nearly one in five adults in Louisiana experiences hearing loss, and countless others struggle with allergies, sinus issues, and ear, nose, and throat (ENT) conditions. Yet many patients face long wait times and

fragmented care, often needing to be seen by multiple specialists in different locations. Recognizing this challenge, SLENT (South Louisiana Ear, Nose, and Throat) has expanded to Hammond, bringing expert ENT and Audiology care under one roof.

SLENT’s SOUND INVESTMENT

revolutionizes ENT and Audiology care in Tangipahoa Parish.

Seamless All-in-One Care

One of the most significant advantages of SLENT’s Hammond location is its in-house referral system. Patients often arrive for one issue—such as allergies or dizziness—only to discover they need ENT or Audiology care. Instead of waiting weeks or months for a referral to another practice, SLENT streamlines the process, ensuring immediate, coordinated treatment without ever leaving the office.

The Hammond Clinic is designed for efficiency and convenience. With ample parking and quick appointment turnarounds, the friendly team at SLENT offers allergy testing, hearing evaluations, and immunotherapy shots without the typical delays.

(L-R) Dr. Matthew Cooper, Dr. Jeni Dunnington

Dr. Matthew William Cooper, MD, is an otologist and otolaryngologist who brings a new level of expertise to the Hammond area. He specializes in tympanoplasty (eardrum reconstruction), mastoidectomy (treatment for chronic ear infections), skull base procedures, and cochlear implant surgery, making life-changing ear surgery available locally for the first time. He served as a firefighter and first responder before completing his ENT residency and advanced otology fellowship at Duke University.

Dr. Jorge “JJ” Martinez, Au.D., F-AAA, is a doctor of audiology with a passion for cutting-edge hearing care. He received his bachelor’s degree from Southeastern Louisiana University and his doctorate degree from LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. He completed his internship at Audiology Associates, where he gained hands-on experience in diagnosing and treating complex hearing and balance disorders. Now, as Director of Audiology at SLENT he continues to provide exceptional care using the latest advancements in hearing technology.

Dr. Jeni A. Dunnington, Au.D., CCC-A, F-AAA, is an experienced audiologist specializing in hearing and balancing disorders. She is board certified with the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology (CCC-A) and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Audiology (F-AAA). Her focus is on personalized, patient-centered care; ensuring that every patient receives a hearing solution perfectly tailored to their needs.

SLENT’s team of specialized providers ensure that patients receive world class care without having to leave town.

Points of Difference: Unmatched Care

While SLENT Hammond integrates the latest advancements in ENT and Audiology, its actual distinction lies not in the technology but in how patients are cared for. As Dr. Martinez, Au.D., says, “The highlight isn’t on the widget itself, rather our services.” SLENT doesn’t just offer the most advanced diagnostic tools, custom hearing aid molds, or in-house specialty referrals- it provides a seamless patient-centered experience that ensures each guest receives the precise care they need without unnecessary delays or hurdles.

By eliminating long wait times, offering specialized surgical and nonsurgical treatments under one roof, and committing to precisiondriven solutions, SLENT Hammond is raising the bar. It’s not about having the best technology but knowing how to use it to transform lives.

SHOWERS OF BLESSINGS

When I first heard about the Shower Ministry at First Presbyterian Church in Hammond, I had a very different idea of what it was. I pictured a group of sweet church ladies planning baby and wedding showers for their congregation. But as I soon discovered, this ministry isn’t about party favors and punch bowls—it’s about dignity, compassion, and offering a fresh start, one shower at a time.

Donna Gay Anderson got the idea a few years ago while volunteering at Fourth Presbyterian Church’s shower ministry in Chicago. Like me, she initially thought it was about throwing parties. But as she saw firsthand the impact a simple shower could have, she became inspired to bring the ministry back to Hammond. When she first proposed the idea to the church session, she faced pushback. The church already had showers—remnants from sheltering disaster relief workers after the 2016 flood—but at the time, the need for such a ministry wasn’t recognized.

Then Hurricane Ida hit. Donna Gay herself was without running water for a month, relying on neighbors and relatives for access to a shower. “I became acutely aware of what it is to find a shower if you don’t have immediate access to one,” she told me. That experience fueled her determination, and when she proposed the ministry again, it was endorsed. She partnered with the Northlake Homeless Coalition, an organization with the network to connect them to those in need. What started with servicing two individuals a week has now grown to nearly 20 participants.

“The Shower Ministry is more than just a place to get clean — it’s a sanctuary of kindness, dignity, and hope.”

HERE COMES THE

Independence High School Band is Blowing the Roof Off Thanks to the Leadership of Herman Lathers

I walked into the Independence High School gym expecting to meet a band director. What I didn’t expect was a show.

The Thunderkatz weren’t just playing - they were bringing the house down. Their horns were sharp, the drums were crisp, and the energy... Unmatched. They were playing their signature song, 4 HORNS, and when I thought it couldn’t get any better, they hit their final note, then shouted in unison - “OWE!”

That’s not just a hype chant. It’s a mentality. It stands for Out Work Everybody, and under the leadership of Herman Lathers, that’s exactly what they’re doing.

Lathers isn’t just a band director - he’s a force. And the best part? He’s leading the program in the very place where his musical journey began.

A 1989 graduate of Independence High, Lathers first picked up a trumpet as a kid and never put it down. By 14, he already knew his calling - he wanted to be a band director. Inspired by his teacher, Daniel King, he poured himself into music. But traditional band music wasn’t enough for him. He and a few friends founded The Thunderkatz , bringing high-energy, HBCU-style performances to their community.

His talent carried him to Southwest Mississippi Community College, then Southeastern Louisiana University (LION UP!) He built a successful music career working with Big Boy Records in New Orleans and even collaborating with industry giants like Biggie. But through all the success, one dream never faded - coming home to teach.

That dream became a reality in September 2021, just weeks after Hurricane Ida tore through the area. Lathers returned to find no band program and no experienced musicians. His first group? Twenty-five freshmen - only three of whom had ever touched an instrument.

Fast forward, and those same students are now seniors, leading a band that has become the school's heartbeat.

Lathers has a simple, yet powerful philosophy:

“They won’t care what you know until they know you care.”

And that’s why his students go all in for him. He meets them where they are - literally. The first question he asks a new student?

Story by Dayne Commander | Photos by Riyen Helg

“What’s your favorite song?” That’s where they start. A few notes and rhythms - always at their level - until they can play the whole thing. And those songs? They don’t just practice them - they perform them.

That’s why The Thunderkatz have such a fire lineup. It’s a mix of the students’ own musical influences - hip-hop, jazz, Latin, rock, and everything in between. In fact, the band has been so successful that Lathers is launching a mariachi band to honor the school’s growing Hispanic community.

His approach works - fast. Within six months, his beginner band performed at the Sicilian Festival. Now? They’re a powerhouse.

Building this program hasn’t just taken heart - it’s taken money. And a lot of it has come straight from Lathers’ own pocket.

But the community is stepping up. Sonic donated $5,000 toward uniforms, and the band recently received $25,000 in new instruments. And now, to help raise funds, The Thunderkatz are preparing to march in their very first Mardi Gras parades— bringing their signature sound to the streets while earning much-needed support.

Still, there’s more to do. Lathers is seeking corporate sponsors to ensure every student has access to an instrument - because he refuses to let finances stop a kid from falling in love with music. He’s also working to build a band booster club full of parents ready to support the program.

For Lathers, this isn’t just about making musiciansit’s about building leaders. He reminds his students every day to dream big because he’s proof that a kid from this school can go on to play with the greats. One of his former students now plays for Tank and the Bangas.

And they’re not just winning on the field or stagethey’re winning in life. The band boasts an average GPA of 3.7, and five former members have become doctors.

Lathers’ mission is clear: To create leaders, change lives, and Outwork Everybody. And judging by the way The Thunderkatz shook the gym that day, I’d say they’re doing just that.

For 50 years, TARC (Teach, Assist, Reach, Connect) has been a pillar of support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Tangipahoa Parish and beyond. Since its founding in 1973, TARC has remained committed to helping individuals lead fulfilling, independent lives by providing essential services, advocacy, and community engagement.

TARC’s story began with a small group of six individuals with disabilities who gathered for classes at the Methodist Church in Hammond. Driven by dedicated parents and community members, this initiative grew into a nonprofit that now serves hundreds of families across Tangipahoa, Livingston, and surrounding parishes. What started as a simple classroom has evolved into a multifaceted organization that offers a wide range of services tailored to meet the changing needs of the community.

Over the years, TARC has expanded its programs to include early intervention, personal care services, and residential support. Today, it offers vital resources such as the Day Habilitation Program and Supported Independent Living, helping individuals achieve greater independence and inclusion.

TARC’s impact has not gone unnoticed. In 2024, it was named Tangipahoa Parish’s Best Charity and received the “Most Improved Memberships” award from The Arc of Louisiana. Additionally, more than half of TARC’s employees have been with the organization for over five years, reflecting a strong, dedicated workforce.

Each year, TARC selects two individuals to serve as Ambassadors, representing the heart of its mission. For 2025, Caitlin Watts and Landon Magee have been chosen to serve in this role, inspiring others with their achievements.

TARC’s work is made possible through strong community partnerships and generous support from local organizations. Fundraising events play a crucial role in sustaining its programs, with annual initiatives including the 40th Annual Radiothon, Tickfaw River Regatta, Pinchin’ Tails for TARC, the 10th Annual Very Special Miss Louisiana Pageant, the Cart-N-Swim Custom Made Golf Cart Raffle, and the 34th Annual Tangipahoa Parish Penny Power. These events bring the community together while ensuring TARC can continue providing essential services.

In addition to fundraising, TARC benefits from the dedication of numerous volunteers and advocates. Groups such as the Louisiana Air National Guard 236 CBCS Squadron, Springfield High School Leadership Council, SLU AOII Sorority, Hammond High School Baseball, and The Hammond Knights (HK) Foundation have given their time and resources to support TARC’s mission.

TARC’s continued success is guided by a committed Board of Directors. In 2025, leadership includes President Parker Layrisson, President-Elect Willie Gibbens, Secretary Tim Reitz, Treasurer Yvonne Vernon, and a team of dedicated directors who work tirelessly to uphold the organization’s mission.

SNOBALLS HOST

SECOND BALL

TO OFFER ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS

On April 5, the sNoBalls are putting on their boogie shoes to raise scholarship money at their disco ball.

Dressed in every color under the rainbow, this Tangipahoa-based parade group welcomes women who are dedicated to supporting the children's arts community through scholarships.

Founder and director Marcia Arceneaux said, “Our inaugural season was a dream! We started with 15 ladies and a lot of faith. From our first season, we were able to award three arts scholarships last summer.”

Featuring flavors such as pink bubblegum, and rainbow, each member decorates their own themed snowball-shaped hats. With their silver dresses shining along parade routes, the crew has doubled with over 30 members this year. With the larger group, they have tripled their scholarship goal.

“We are aiming to award 10 scholarships this summer. We know there’s a need, and we’re going to throw a huge party to meet it.”

Arceneaux knows the power of the arts. She has more than 30 years of classroom experience as an arts educator, but the arts gave her much-needed refuge as a child.

“I’d have been a runaway or worse from the abuse I experienced. If I hadn’t had the school band to anchor me, I wouldn’t have found the purpose and security I needed.

Now as a mother, grandmother, and arts educator, I see the opportunity every day to bring hope to others' lives.”

To bring these life-changing and often life-saving programs to more children, Arceneaux launched the nonprofit in 2023, starting with friends and colleagues.

Attracting like-minded women, the sNoBalls have grown a remarkable community that funds scholarships through paid appearances and the donations raised at their annual ball. The group and its mission are catching on.

New member Cari Caramonta said, “As a business owner and a mom of two young children, I knew I had limited time, so the flexibility and the purpose of the sNoBalls appealed to me. I joined with a friend, and it’s been so great to have this community of dedicated women who want to have fun while helping children explore their arts dreams.”

Returning member Wendy Savarino, an elementary music teacher, agrees.

“We have the best time, and parade judges agree as we won best dancing/marching group in the two Christmas parades we appeared in this season. More than performing, I love getting together to share ideas, learn routines, and support each other. I also love that I can refer students to scholarships to further their studies.”

Upcoming parade appearances this season include stops in Hammond, Slidell, Morgan City, and Ponchatoula.

The sNoBalls will host the Baller’s Ball at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Ponchatoula. Tickets are currently on sale at thesnoballs.com for $50.

“We have a DJ ready to spin disco tunes,” Arceneaux said. “We’ll have gumbo, jambalaya, drinks by Benny’s, a silent auction, and a performance by our members. Put on your sparkles and come out for a great time for a great cause.”
