Bigger, Better & Bringing Back Traditions
LIZ GENEST SMITH
One of my favorite things about marrying a Louisiana man and deciding to move to New Orleans many moons ago was knowing that our then-toddler son would never know life without Mardi Gras. For natives, that’s not a big deal, but for transplants like me, it’s huge!
We were absolute parade warriors for years, but when we moved to Mandeville a few years later, the time, effort and energy required to hit our usual Southshore parades definitely made us slow our roll. By the time our son was entering junior high, we were down to maybe two parades on each shore, which was mostly fine with us, but not having an official place to celebrate on Mardi Gras day just felt wrong. And then we discovered Covington’s little celebration.
We had no idea what to expect that first year, and to be honest, it felt a little like the Twilight Zone when we were able to zip into a downtown parking lot and back the truck right up to within mere feet of the parade route. The trio of parades that ran back to back were modest and brief, but the people were fun and the bar across the street opened up to serve us cocktails, so we were able to enjoy a festive, no-fuss Fat Tuesday, and be home by lunch. Easy. Peasy.
For a few years in a row, we brought various friends and family with us to share this hidden gem, and it felt like our little secret that we’d be able to easily access forever. But we got too smug for our britches. Imagine our surprise when, after missing just a couple of years, we thought we’d casually mosey back over to Covington a scant hour or two before the parades were set to roll—but we couldn’t get near downtown! Who in the world had the unmitigated gall to invite all these people and television crews?
Apparently, in those years that we’d missed, one of the parades, Carnival of Covington, had gone through a major transformation. I recently caught up with its captain, St. Tammany Parish Councilman Larry Rolling, and he gave me the whole story. A Covington city councilman from 2011-2023 and a lifelong Mardi Gras enthusiast who reigned as king of Metairie’s Krewe of Isis parade in 1997, Larry gave me a brief history of the krewe and explained how former Covington mayor and current St. Tammany Parish president, Mike Cooper, really got the ball rolling.
STORY
PHOTOS KREWE OF BOGUE FALAYA
“Mike had approached me about organizing a bicentennial celebration for Covington back in 2013, and that went so well that in 2017, he raised the idea of revitalizing Mardi Gras Day. So, we gathered a group of community volunteers and business leaders to form a committee. We called the new parade ‘Carnival of Covington’ and also held an event with music and food at the Trailhead after the parade.”
The parade joined the same route used by the Covington Lions Club and the Mystick Krewe of Covington. But when their numbers began to grow, Larry and the board decided to set themselves apart from the other two parades and make some major changes.
First of all, the organization structured itself a bit differently by offering memberships to local businesses and providing them with pre-assembled and decorated floats. This allows them to simply populate their floats and use companybranded items as throws. They also decided to rebrand the parade, using history as their guide.
For a little context, most carnival enthusiasts know that the first organized Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans took place in 1857, but St. Tammany Parish wasn’t too far behind, holding its first parade in downtown Covington just 22 years later. Its king arrived by boat on Lundi Gras, much like Zulu
and Rex in New Orleans, and it also hosted a royal ball. These traditions fell away as the number of parades and events all across the parish exploded over the last 100+ years, but in 2023, Larry and the newly minted Krewe of Bogue Falaya decided to bring them back.
Along with choosing a name that honors the city’s historic waterway, the krewe, which now boasts a whopping 700 riders and 24 floats, decided to bring back the Lundi Gras arrival ceremony via riverboat. And instead of naming a king or queen, they opted to select a grand marshal, who arrives along with other dignitaries to officially kick off the festivities.
So, what goes into selecting candidates for this honorary role?
“We consider their local involvement, if they give back to the community and how they’re received by the community. Tim Lantrip’s name came up last year, and it was an immediate thumbs-up from everyone. He is one of the kindest, most honorable men around. He’s beloved by everyone, and we’re just thrilled that he accepted our invitation.”
Tim and his wife Jan have been the proprietors of downtown Covington’s iconic English Tea Room since 2002. Housed in a charming old cottage that’s delightfully decorated with scads of British flags and memorabilia, it offers up a selection of over 260 teas, classic English food like scones with clotted cream and various high tea options. They also host special holiday themed events and menus, so keep an eye on their website and social media for upcoming Mardi Gras fun.
In addition to running this beloved establishment, Tim is also an active member of the Covington Garden Club and Church of the King, and he has been honored with both the St. Tammany Parish President’s Award and the Patron of the Arts Award. But he gave Jan and the whole community quite a scare four years ago when he was hit by a truck while crossing the street. Tim was seriously injured and the prognosis looked grim, but thankfully, his determination and positive attitude helped him on his road to recovery. How’s he doing these days?
“I’m feeling better than ever!” he told me cheerfully. “And I was shocked and surprised by this honor from the Krewe of Bogue Falaya. I had no idea they were going to ask me. I’m just an old redneck from Texas, and here I am, getting to be a grand marshal of a Mardi Gras parade!”
Proving to be as gracious and magnanimous as everyone says, Tim immediately pivoted the conversation to share kind words about his predecessors.
“Grayhawk Perkins is a good friend of mine, and so is Lisa Condrey-Ward. They each were grand marshals before me and I think very highly of them, so it’s a privilege to get to follow them.”
While Tim will be the third grand marshal, he gets the distinction of being the one to usher in the Krewe of Bogue Falaya’s Inaugural Masquerade Ball, another resurrected tradition. Formal attire and masks are required for this “enchanting evening of mystery, music, and revelry” that’s set to take place on January 17 at The River Mill in Madisonville. Tim’s thoughts on this event?
“I have to decide what to wear. I’m not skinny or young anymore, and I think I sort of favor Winston Churchill these days. He walked with a cane and so do I, so I’m thinking about dressing as him!”
How perfectly apropos for the owner of the English Tea Room.
On witnessing the transformation of this parade in recent years, Tim told me, “The whole community turns out now. Larry and Mike are my favorite public officials, and they’ve done an outstanding job turning this into a substantial parade. They’re turning it into the best Mardi Gras parade outside of New Orleans.”
Then he sighed and said, “I just love Covington. The best thing God ever did was put me in St. Tammany.”
Okay, so it’ll take a little more planning and preparation to attend Lundi Gras and Mardi Gras in Covington than it did a few years ago, but how lucky we are to have such a huge, historic celebration right in our backyard!
OVERVIEW OF EVENTS
The celebration begins on Lundi Gras, on Monday, February 16 at 4:00 pm with Tim’s arrival by riverboat in Bogue Falaya Park, followed by a second line parade to the steps of the Southern Hotel. Tim will be honored by krewe
officers and presented with the keys to the city by elected officials, then there will be a champagne and king cake celebration that’s open to the community.
The Krewe of Bogue Falaya Mardi Gras Day Parade rolls through the streets of historic downtown Covington at 11:00 am (following the Lions parade, which rolls at 9:15 am) on Tuesday, February 17. This year’s theme is “Reality of Imagination,” featuring 24 floats, 700 riding members, marching bands and community groups. Plus, this year they’re introducing the Krewe of Karts, featuring 20 golf karts decorated to compete for the best kart. A free concert and after-party at the Trailhead will follow from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm.
The return of the Holiday Season marks the arrival of twinkling lights, cooler weather and family traditions. It is a time of celebration and reflection, cherishing our loved ones, while looking back upon our accomplishments.
Our year began with record-breaking snowfall that turned our beautiful parish into a Winter Wonderland. In January, we announced a $5.9 billion (yes, with a B) flood reduction investment, the largest in Louisiana history, that will strengthen our flood defense. In the Spring, the largest road investment in St. Tammany history started, the $34 million Adrien Rouquette Parkway, connecting LA 1088 and U.S. 190 near Pelican Park. In the Summer, the Tchefuncte Habitat Restoration, a project to protect the Madisonville Lighthouse from wave erosion, was completed. Currently, more than $110 million in water and sewer projects are ongoing, continuing our commitment to provide safe drinking water for our customers.
2025 marked the 30th anniversary of the Tammany Trace, one of our most beloved assets, which also received some improvements. The 25-acre Lacombe Nature Park is under construction, fitness courts were added at Koop Drive and Camp Salmen, wooden mile markers were added and we continue to invest in the pavement and bridges of the Trace.
One of the Northshore’s favorite holiday traditions, the Holiday of Lights, returns for its 26th year on Koop Drive. Presented by the Tammany Trace Foundation, St. Tammany Health System and Northshore Media Group, the yuletide tradition will be on December 5, 6, 12 & 13. Bring your families and friends to Koop Drive for carols, thousands of lights, food trucks and Santa & Mrs. Claus.
As we transition into a new year, I am excited about the future of St. Tammany Parish. My administration will continue to focus on protecting our quality of life.
From my family to yours, I wish you a merry Christmas, and a happy, joyous New Year!
As we close out 2025, I want to take a moment to thank you - the citizens of St. Tammany Parish - for your continued support and for the trust you have placed in me and my administration to keep our community safe.
I would be lying if I said 2025 wasn’t a difficult year for our department.
On March 23, we suffered a tremendous loss when Sgt. Grant Candies was killed in the line of duty - taking from us a husband, a father, a Marine, a mentor, and a true leader among his peers.
Losing him was deeply painful, and his passing stands as a solemn reminder of the risks our deputies face every day in service to others.
Yet, in the days and weeks that followed, our community showed an outpouring of compassion and support - for both our agency and for Grant’s family. Your kindness and unity reminded me once again why I am so proud to serve as sheriff of this great parish.
As we turn the page to 2026, we do so with renewed purpose and a firm commitment to continuing the mission Sgt. Candies and so many others have dedicated their lives to - protecting and serving the people of St. Tammany with honor, courage, and compassion.
We also recognize that these are challenging economic times for many families and businesses across our parish. Just as you are tightening your belts at home, we are doing the same within our department. My administration remains committed to being responsible stewards of your tax dollars - ensuring that every expenditure is made wisely, transparently, and with the best interests of our community in mind.
As we move into 2026, I am confident that, together, we can meet whatever challenges lie ahead. Our strength as a parish has always come from our people and a shared goal of keeping St. Tammany Parish a safe and thriving place to live, work, and raise a family.
Thank you again for your steadfast support and for standing with the men and women of the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office. I look forward to serving you in the year ahead.
Mike Cooper St. Tammany Parish President
Randy Smith St. Tammany Sheriff
Mark Johnson City of Covington Mayor
Governments do many projects. The City, the State and the Parish all hope for projects that are attractive, environmentally positive and functional. Last year, Senator Patrick McMath and I walked a section of the Tammany Trace that was awful; crumbling cement, dumpsters and garbage cans surrounded by non-draining puddles of water and mud. As our little Covington grows more and more popular, downtown parking becomes more and more scarce.
Senator McMath and State Representative Mark Wright floated the idea of a State capital outlay project. This portion of the Trace is owned by St. Tammany Parish. Parish President Mike Cooper was immediately on board granting us permission to make improvements.
The City’s Public Works Department tackled the non-existent drainage by replacing the old, crumbled terra cotta culverts and by adding several catch basins. Smoketree Landscape designed a wonderful array of hardscape, trees, bushes and flowers tying it all into the existing butterfly garden with a lovely seating area with benches. The now well-lit pedestrian pathway connects the Justice Center parking lots directly to the Trailhead and to our historic downtown.
Three separate government entities, City, Parish and State, working together to create a linear park that is beautiful, environmentally positive and functional. Very nice.
Happy Holidays Mandeville!
I have always been a big believer in continuing education and professional development. As the Mayor of Mandeville, the organization that I get the most out of is the Mid-Sized Cities Mayors’ Association. This group, which has no dues and no bylaws, is simply a group of mayors who get together twice a year to exchange ideas and learn from one another. I was honored to host our bi-annual conference here in Mandeville in October! We welcomed 25 Mayors of medium-sized cities from across the state, and many commented that Mandeville has been our best conference yet! I cannot thank those who helped put this conference on enough, including Melissia O’Neil and Alia Casborne from our staff, and the great folks at Pat’s Rest A While (you just cannot beat that view)! We also had some great speakers including Louisiana Department of Economic Development Secretary Susan Bourgeois and Louisiana Department of Revenue Secretary Richard Nelson among others. We enjoyed lovely music at the Dew Drop where other local leaders joined us including Parish President Mike Cooper, Parish Councilwoman Kathy Seiden, State Representative Kim Carver, Madisonville Mayor Jean Pelloat, and Slidell Mayor-Elect Randy Fandal. Mandeville surely impressed all of our visitors, and I could not be prouder!
As we move into the holiday season, please come and check out the following events in Mandeville. I am sure you will be just as impressed as the other mayors were!
Friday, December 5 Sips of the Season (Girod Street – OMBA)
Saturday, December 6 Winter on the Water (Parade & Trailhead Festival)
Friday, December 12 Movie Night at the Trailhead
Saturday, December 13 Holiday Market at the Trailhead (9a-1p)
Saturday, December 13 Christmas Past (Girod Street – OMBA)
Friday, December 19 Menorah Lighting (Northshore Jewish Congregation – Trailhead)
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all! I wish everyone all the best in 2026!

ALUMNI PARTY BRINGS TOGETHER FIVE YEARS OF HONOREES!
The inaugural Forty Under 40 Alumni Party was held at Arena Collective, where honorees from the past five years gathered to reconnect, celebrate their accomplishments, and network with fellow honorees.
Guests enjoyed an outstanding menu prepared by Chef Gavin Jobe, owner of Meribo, whose culinary creations were a highlight of the evening. Laughter, lively conversation, and shared memories filled the room as alumni reflected on their journeys since being recognized.
It was truly a night to remember — and with plans already underway for next year’s celebration, the Forty Under 40 community is looking forward to keeping the tradition alive.

Robby Miller Tangipahoa Parish President
As I think about 2025, I am in awe of the strength and resiliency of the people of Tangipahoa Parish. This has been a tough year. The tightening economy has put a strain on all of us. Everything costs more right now, and everyone is feeling the pinch. It’s a battle to find balance right now, but this parish is doing just that. Our people continue to work and shop here. Our people continue to invest in this place we call home, and they are choosing to build their lives here. What a testament to the quality of life we enjoy here in Tangipahoa Parish!
With that said, we also remember those who are hurting in our community. We have families recovering from the effects of the Smitty’s fire in Roseland, and we have a river-based community still reeling from the impact of the devastating oil spill. Our parish remains committed to working hand in hand to help our friends and neighbors recover and build back better than they started. Even more inspiring is the way that our people have moved into action. From fundraisers to food drives, our people have banded together to take care of one another. It’s a prime example of what we always say—in times of crisis, when our neighbors are hurting, the people of Tangipahoa Parish “move here” to make things better.
As we close out 2025, I am genuinely hopeful that 2026 will offer us ample opportunities to grow and thrive. A recent report by Dr. Loren Scott indicates Tangipahoa will be in the enviable position of projected job growth and economic prosperity over the next several years, and all indices point to that. Our best days are ahead of us in Tangipahoa, and on behalf of our team, we wish you and your family a joyful holiday season and a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year!

Bogue Chitto State Trailblazing
20 miles of trails & more coming!
State Park Trailblazing
Louisiana State Parks
ISTORY SARAH COTTRELL
first heard Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser talk about the bike trails at Bogue Chitto State Park, and as soon as the weather turned a little cooler, I knew it was the perfect time to check them out for myself.
Nestled along the Bogue Chitto River just outside Franklinton, Louisiana, this 1,786acre state park is one of the state’s outdoor gems. It’s known for its scenic bluffs, cypress-tupelo swamps, and rolling hills — a rare landscape in southeastern Louisiana. Visitors come for canoeing, fishing, tubing, horseback riding, hiking, and now, the park’s growing network of mountain bike trails.
I spoke with Park Manager Tony Frickey, who has lived and managed the park for the past six years. He shared that the addition of the bike trails has made a huge impact. Annual attendance has skyrocketed from 70,000 visitors six years ago to 190,000 last year. The trails have not only drawn bikers from across the country but also local families looking for a fun weekend escape.
PHOTOS CHRIS HANDY & MARK SALUITT
The park offers 100 RV spots, cozy cabins, and tent camping areas, making it perfect for a quick getaway.
I made the short drive north from Covington, with a stop at Giddy Up in Folsom for coffee and a breakfast sandwich — a great little pre-adventure ritual.
Once at the park, the bike trails were easy to find and clearly marked. There are trail maps available at the entrance, and a small day-use fee of just $3, or you can grab an annual family pass for $100 if you plan to return (and trust me, you’ll want to).
There’s plenty of parking and friendly riders ready to offer trail tips.
The trailhead—the true starting point of all the action—was buzzing with life. Small groups gathered to chat and prep for the day’s ride, while an array of sprinter vans lined the parking area, their back doors open to reveal an impressive collection of bikes, tools, and gear.
Bike racks adorned nearly every car, and if you didn’t bring your own wheels, bike rentals were available at the park’s country store, making it

nearby, offering the perfect spot to kick back and watch the pros tackle the more advanced tracks. The energy was contagious—riders of all ages flying through the air, laughter echoing across the park.
What stood out immediately was how well-marked and thoughtfully organized the trail system is. Every trail is clearly signed and graded by difficulty, following an easy-to-understand color system—so whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned rider, it’s simple to find the right route for your comfort level. Helmets are required, which reinforces the park’s commitment to safety for everyone out on the trails.
As the morning went on, more families arrived with bikes, scooters, and picnics. There are even beginnerfriendly trails designed just for kids, so the whole family can enjoy the adventure together.
Whether you’re an experienced mountain biker or just looking for a peaceful spot to spend a day outdoors, Bogue Chitto State Park is worth the trip. With its natural beauty, well-maintained trails, and welcoming atmosphere, it’s easy to see why more and more people are discovering this Louisiana treasure.
Much of that growth can be credited to Toby Cortez, the Development Coordinator for NORBA, the Northshore Off Road Bicycling Association. NORBA is the Louisiana chapter of the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) and a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to trail stewardship, advocacy, and community development across the Northshore of New Orleans. Toby has been the driving force behind the Bogue Chitto trail system. He began the project five years ago, developing the master plan and overseeing construction. He explained that the trailhead design
was inspired by the Washington Parish Fair, a beloved local tradition.
“We wanted it to feel like an event space,” Toby said. “When you stand at the trailhead, you’re surrounded by trails and skills courses, not just a single-track disappearing into the woods. It’s a visual and social experience.”
The trailhead area features showers, bathrooms, and stations to repair and wash your bike, all thoughtfully designed to create a welcoming hub for riders.
Toby emphasized that the trails are a public and private partnership between Louisiana State Parks and NORBA, with both professional and volunteerbuilt sections. “You can’t tell which is which,” he said proudly. “That’s the beauty of it. It’s a labor of love.”
The results speak for themselves. The trails are

The Sculpted Life of Chef Turned Woodcarver Steve Tresvik
STORY ELAINE MILLERS
PHOTOS JERRY COTTRELL
efore he ever picked up a chainsaw, Steve Tresvik picked up a ladle.
After four years in the U.S. Navy, the upstate New York native returned home to the foothills of the Catskills with no real plan—just a GI Bill and an open mind. “I lived about twenty miles from the Culinary Institute of America,” he recalls. “The government helped pay for school, so I figured, why not?”
That simple decision launched a culinary career spanning nearly three decades with Hyatt Hotels, taking him from bustling city kitchens to grand openings across the country. “I ran kitchens, trained chefs, and traveled constantly,” he says. “It was a good
It was also during those years that Tresvik discovered another kind of artistry— ice carving. What started as a banquet requirement quickly became a passion. “When the hotels were having grand openings, they’d call me in for ice carvings,” he says. “Pretty soon, my swans and eagles were getting more attention than the buffets.”
Eventually, his career brought him south to New Orleans, where he and his wife, Maria, and daughter, Jenny, found a rhythm restoring old homes between his hotel gigs. Then came Hurricane Katrina, and everything changed. The couple relocated to Texas for a time, but Louisiana—humid, unpredictable, and full of charm—pulled them back.
Retirement was supposed to mean slowing down. Instead, it gave Tresvik a new canvas.
“I had this old building,” he laughs. “Didn’t know what to do with it. It was falling apart, so I rebuilt it—and then I still didn’t know what to do with it. So I started playing with wood.”
The transition from ice to wood came naturally. The same precision, the same eye for form and movement—just a different element. “I work a few hours a day, then I go home,” he says. “Next day, I see something new in the piece. Wood’s got its own personality. It cracks, it shifts, it surprises you.”
Soon, the once-retired chef was carving majestic horses, towering bears, and playful frogs—each one emerging from a fallen tree or forgotten stump. What began as an experiment became a calling.
Today, his work dots the landscape of Louisiana’s Northshore. One of his earliest public pieces—a proud wooden horse—still greets visitors in the parking lot of Giddy Up Folsom, a beloved coffeehouse and community hub. “The owner, Frank Richard, is a character,” Tresvik says with a grin. “He called about a horse, so I carved him one. Then he started asking for more.”
Now Tresvik’s sculptures can be seen throughout the Giddy Up grounds—in the Paddock, where concerts are held, in the parking lot, and in front of the Far Horizon Art Gallery. The Giddy Up sits in the heart of Folsom, hosting monthly meetings and gatherings that keep the small town connected. Most recently, they have also added a Community Garden. You can often find Frank and his family at the coffee shop, chatting with neighbors and greeting visitors who stop to admire Tresvik’s work.
He never put up a sign, never made a website—but you can find him on Instagram. “It’s a hobby,” he insists. But that hobby has turned into a kind of local legend.
“Everywhere I go,” he says, chuckling, “people ask, ‘Hey, are you the guy on Highway 25?’”
From the cold precision of ice to the warm patience of wood, Tresvik’s story is one of transformation— and quiet persistence. The medium may have changed, but the artistry remains.
“Wood doesn’t melt,” he says, eyes twinkling “It cracks sometimes, sure. But it’s still here. So am I.”

St. Tammany NOW
Northshore Roots and a North Star FOR ST. TAMMANY’S FUTURE
For as long as I can remember, St. Tammany has been a part of who I am. Some of my first jobs were in Abita Springs and Lacombe, where local businesses, friendly faces, and a deep sense of community shaped not just my upbringing but also my understanding of what makes this region special. I was born and raised on the Northshore, so returning to lead the St. Tammany Economic Development Corporation (St. Tammany EDC) as President and CEO truly feels like coming full circle.
My journey began in the timber industry - a business that runs deep in my family and deep on the Northshore. I spent 15 years in the wood products sector owning a timber brokerage business, primarily working in operations and business development. I learned firsthand how economic growth can be balanced with stewardship of the land and its residents. Those lessons formed my foundation, and they still influence how I approach economic development today.
As my career progressed, I found myself drawn to the strategic side of business. I enjoyed understanding how communities attract new industries, create jobs, and prepare their people and infrastructure for long-term success. That interest led me from the private sector to the state capital of Baton Rouge where I joined Louisiana Economic Development (LED) as part of the business investment projects team.
At LED, I had the privilege of working on projects that ranged from recruiting global manufacturers to supporting Louisiana-based companies in their expansion plans. I learned how to align state and local resources, structure incentive programs, and engage with stakeholders across the public and private sectors. Those experiences gave me a deep appreciation for how partnerships can unlock opportunities for entire regions.
After several rewarding years at LED, I joined the Greater Baton Rouge Economic Partnership, formerly known as the Baton Rouge Area Chamber, where I spent nearly a decade helping lead regional business development efforts. I was responsible for overseeing initiatives across a nine-parish area where I focused on creating the right conditions for businesses to invest, grow, and hire.
I worked closely with state and local officials, utility partners, education institutions, and private-sector leaders to deliver results. Those efforts helped generate billions in new capital investment and thousands of new jobs for the Baton Rouge area. But more importantly, they taught me that successful economic development is not just about numbers - it’s about alignment. When businesses, educators, and government partners share a vision, progress accelerates.
OUR NORTH STAR FOR THE FUTURE
St. Tammany Parish is at a pivotal moment. Our population continues to grow, our quality of life is second to none, and our location gives us unique access to major markets - from New Orleans to the Gulf Coast and beyond. But to scale, support, and sustain economic growth, we must be intentional. This requires a clear strategy that connects our economic goals to measurable outcomes and shared community values.
That strategy is already in place through THRIVE2029, our organization’s five-year strategic economic development plan. I often refer to THRIVE2029 as our “north star,” because it aligns every part of our organization toward one shared direction. The plan is data-driven, actionable, and designed to help us measure progress along the way. My goal is to use this living framework to guide the next phase of how we engage, invest, and build St. Tammany’s future.
St. Tammany EDC proudly partners with GNO, Inc. and Louisiana Economic Development
In my first 90 days, there have been several key investments in St. Tammany – from the opening of the $40 million, 140,000-square-foot Amazon delivery facility in Slidell to the $33 million state-of-the-art EquipmentShare Core Solutions facility in Lacombe and most recently Chillco’s $4.3 million headquarters expansion. We have seen the integration of Slidell Memorial Hospital, Ochsner, and MD Anderson at the Ochsner MD Anderson Cancer Center at Slidell Regional Cancer Center expanding toptier cancer care treatment on the Northshore. And through collaboration with our partners at the Port of New Orleans, we have seen the expansion of the Foreign Trade Zone designation into St. Tammany which positions us to capture investment opportunities tied to logistics, manufacturing, and global commerce - especially as new developments like the Louisiana International Terminal create ripple effects across the region.
These impressive wins, paired with Louisiana Economic Development’s four bold new economic development initiatives, are paving the way for a bright future in Louisiana. This is our moment to step into the next phase of what economic prosperity looks like for our state, our region, and right here in St. Tammany.
MEASURING SUCCESS
Economic development is about creating an environment where businesses can locate, establish, and expand while also providing residents with a home where they can advance their career, foster a sense of community, and enjoy the surrounding resources. Success in economic development is often measured in capital investment, job creation, and tax revenue. But I also believe success must be measured by broader, longer-term outcomes:
• Are our residents finding quality jobs close to home?
• Are wages rising in our target industries?
• Are small businesses growing and thriving?
• Are we preserving the unique qualities that make St. Tammany special?
We’ll use data to track progress and adjust our strategies as conditions change. The economy is dynamic - from global supply chains to workforce demographics - and we must remain flexible enough to adapt while staying true to our vision.
LOOKING AHEAD
As I step into this role, I am both humbled and energized. The Northshore has given me so much, and it’s an honor to have the opportunity to give back in this capacity.
Our mission is clear: to position our parish as a destination of choice for businesses to locate, advance, and thrive. Achieving that will require partnership, persistence, and purpose. But we have the foundation to make it happen
Russell Richardson, St. Tammany Economic Development Corporation President and CEO
- a strong economy, a skilled workforce, and supportive community partnerships.
In the years ahead, I look forward to working alongside our board, staff, public officials, and community partners to bring this vision to life. Together, we can ensure St. Tammany continues to be not just a great place to live, but a great place to build a future.
I often think back to the lessons I learned growing up in the timber business: that growth requires patience, resilience, and a deep respect for the roots that support it. Those principles still guide me. They remind me that our work in economic development isn’t just about today. It’s about ensuring future generations can thrive here tomorrow.

ABOUT JORGE & LISA
In every issue, EDGE of the Lake invites a local chef or restaurateur to visit another eatery on the Northshore.
Jorge Henriquez and his wife Lisa are co-owners and operators of Keith Young’s Steakhouse in Madisonville. A sophisticated staple on the Northshore since 2005, it’s renowned for quality, hand-cut steaks and chops, seafood, housemade sauces and a variety of lunch and dinner specialties. Along with offering subtle twists on contemporary steakhouse fare and customcrafted event menus, their excellent wine list and impressive spirits menu, which features a large selection of bourbon, creates a next-level dining experience.
While we had certainly heard of Aperitif Spritz & Bites and its great chef and great Mandeville lakefront location, we recently visited for the first time. Our reservation was for 6:30pm on a Wednesday, just as the sun was setting, and the view was spectacular. It was a little too chilly for us to sit outside, but that would be an ideal spot in warmer weather. Along with the view, the building itself is beautiful inside and out. They did a great job renovating a historic cottage. It’s very pretty with a quaint, welcoming vibe and the dining room manages to be both open and intimate with a classic modern bistro aesthetic.
We found the menu to be creative, but not overdone. It offers innovative and exciting new takes on some classic New Orleans and South Louisiana dishes. By concentrating on quality versus quantity, they curated an appealing selection that makes us want to go back and try other things next time.
We started out with cocktails from their libation menu, which also offers beer, wine and mocktails. Lisa chose a classic Cosmopolitan. It’s a simple drink, but it’s easy to get wrong, and they nailed it. I had the Blood Orange Rosemary Margarita, made with blood orange ginger beer for a different twist, and it was delicious. Along with the flavors, they were visually impressive. Both drinks arrived in beautiful stemware along with artfully assembled garnish, making for a great presentation.
For our appetizers, Lisa ordered the Butter Poached Maine Lobster, served as three petit pistolettes filled with tender claw and knuckle meat and nicely seasoned dijontarragon aioli. I had the Oysters Aperitif, which were flashfried, tossed in a New Orleansstyle barbecue butter, topped with bacon and bleu cheese crumbles, and served on grilled focaccia toast points. The oysters were the perfect size and fried perfectly.
We split the Aperitif Wedge Salad to be sure we had room for our entrees. It was served with a creamy parmesan dressing, grape tomatoes and pieces of applewood smoked bacon. But they used Bibb lettuce, which was nice and made it a bit more delicate than the traditional iceberg lettuce.
I decided on the New York Strip with Chimichurri Sauce for my entree. It was served with frites and asparagus, and was perfectly medium rare, just as I’d ordered. It came out sliced, and kudos to them because there’s no room for error when you serve it like this.
Lisa ordered Scallop and Shrimp Clemenceau, which was diver scallops wrapped in pancetta and royal red shrimp with a light lemon creme sauce. It was served with roasted mushrooms, sugar snap peas and fingerling potatoes cut into bite-sized pieces. Between that and the tenderness of the scallops, no knife was needed. Also, it’s so easy to overcook scallops, but these were grilled to perfection.
We were way too full for dessert, but Lisa got an affogato. They brought vanilla ice cream in a glass and poured the espresso tableside, which made for a nice presentation. Overall, the service was prompt, but we didn’t feel rushed. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable and able to easily answer all of our questions. As for the food, the thoughtful attention given to appearance, execution and taste in every dish was so impressive. There’s clearly a lot of passion and technique in that kitchen.
We would definitely recommend Aperitif and, in fact, we already have. It’s a relaxed atmosphere where you could be comfortable dressed up or just in jeans, so it’s great for date nights, nights out with friends, or even a family dinner. They offer a kid’s menu upon request, and we saw a table with three kids dining while we were there.
Kudos to them for this achievement, there’s really nothing quite like it on the Northshore. We wish them all the best because we need more places like this around here. We’re looking forward to going back and trying some of their other dishes!
