The 3rd annual Tee It Up For The Troops event was held on Monday, September 9 at the Wanakah Country Club in Wanakah, NY. Honoring Our Fallen Heroes

David DiPietro honored one of our nation’s finest who fell in the line of duty by memorializing the Genesee Road bridge over Route 219 in his honor Sunday, September 15. Sgt. Brian K. Baker was a serviceman in Iraq who fell heroically protecting the Bagdad Airport at the age of 27. DiPietro honored Sgt. Baker as part of his Commemorate our Hometown Heroes Veterans Bridges and Roads Program, which seeks to name local bridges and roads after fallen military members from their communities. “It was a singular honor to have met Sgt. Baker’s family and friends as we commemorated this bridge,” DiPietro said. “I am proud that his memory will always live on in this community and that all who live here will remember his brave sacrifice and others like him who gave their lives in service to our country. We will never forget Brian or any of his fellow heroes.”

Team Building at Eden Elementary

Mrs. McTigue's and Mrs. Lester's class participated in the Paper Chain Challenge during the first week of school. Students worked in small groups using two pieces of construction paper, a ruler, and scissors. They were directed to design the longest paper chain they could in thirty minutes. This STEM activity encouraged cooperation and team building.

You cannot even reason with them or get near to them any easier than you can get into a city with walls around it or a castle with bars on the windows. They make it impossible to resolve a matter.

This, sadly, happens in families where close relatives don't even speak to each other for decades. It happens in churches too, where someone has been slighted or gets offended by a statement they hear in a sermon or lesson.

The solution is to be humble. Don't have an over inflated opinion of yourself or your feelings. Don't live by emotions but by principles such as love, forgiveness, reconciliation. Be a peacemaker, don't hold grudges.

Retired North Collins Town Clerk Margaret Orrange was presented with a certificate honoring her as 2019 North Collins Democratic Committee Member of the Year at a recent ceremony held at the Gowanda Country Club. The award, given by the Erie County Southtowns Democratic Committee was presented to an honoree from each of the following Southtowns, in recognition of service given to the ideals of the Democratic Party.

Other honorees present were: Brant – Councilman Dan Kujawinski, PhD, Eden – former Supervisor Glenn Nellis. , Collins - Posthumously Phyllis Lay, Committee member and election inspector for 60 years.

Others that were recognized were Boston, Barbara Moore, Concord, Luke Wochensky, Evans, Mary K. Hosler, Hamburg Deb Vaticano, and Southtowns Democratic Committee member Francis McLaughlin.

News from Southtowns Catholic School

2019 Blessing of the Backpacks at SCS Saint John Paul II Parish had their annual Blessing of the Backpacks on September 6th. Before Mass started, students at Southtowns Catholic School placed all their backpacks in front of the Altar.

During Mass, Father Sean DiMaria held up his hands, said a prayer for the backpacks and everything they symbolize for the school year.

When he was done, he sprinkled the backpacks and congregation with Holy Water. This is a wonderful event held every year during the first week of school.

2019 Grandparent's Day at SCS Grandparents were invited to a special Mass & brunch on September 13th at Southtowns Catholic School. The students sat with their families at a special Mass that celebrated grandparents. After, everyone was invited to the gym to enjoy a brunch. This is a very special tradition at SCS that we look forward to every year. We love our Grandparents at SCS. They can join us any day. We welcome everyone to join us any Friday for 8:30 Mass.

The Eden Dairy Queen and owner, Eric Gawron, began sponsoring the Boys & Girls Club’s Jr. Staff Program this year. On Friday, September 20th our Junior Staff program visited the Eden Dairy Queen. Jr. Staffers received an awesome presentation from Eric about the difference between good and bad customer service, the importance of a good work ethic, what it is like to be a business owner, how to run a successful business, and being passionate about your job. Eric spoke about by taking initiative and how being a dedicated hardworking employee would allow career advancement. In addition, Eric answered several questions form our members and provided a tasty treat afterwards.

Jr. Staff is a Program that allows members, 5th grade and up, to learn how to run a small business, prepare for a job, and learn how to be a great employee. Members fill out an application and go through an interview. They learn how to provide good customer service, develop a strong work ethic, as well as manage and work in the snack shack. By participating in the Jr Staff program, members learn essential skills that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

New York State has mailed out the Property Tax Relief checks. This program is NOT the STAR program. These checks are based on the following: 1. The school district HAS to have stayed below the 2% cap 2. The property owner has to be eligible for the STAR exemption 3. The amount of the check is based on income So, not everyone will receive the same amount. The STAR program has undergone more changes. This past year, NYS has decreased the income limit for Basic STAR from $500,000 to $250,000, has offered the possibility of registering for the check program instead of receiving an exemption, required Enhanced STAR recipients to register in the automatic Income Verification Program where the state verifies the income eligibility, and has offered the possibility of applying for the exemption AFTER the March 1st deadline for Good Cause.

If you are in the new STAR check program, you may be receiving your checks before October 15, 2019 (depending on when you registered). Unfortunately, if you have any questions or concerns, you MUST contact NYS at 518-457-2036. We do not have any information or access to information regarding these properties.

Because there are now so many different situations, you may not be required to follow the same renewal as your friends & neighbors.

If you have a question, contact the Eden Assessor Office at 9929135. We will advise you according to your specific situation.

We have mailed out the Senior Aged Renewal forms. ALL exemption applications and renewals are due by March 1, 2020.

You will need to provide ALL income documents for 2018. The IRS changed the 1040 forms for 2018. As a result, we ask that you bring in your Federal AND State Income forms and include ALL 1099s. If you ONLY received the Enhanced Exemption last year and completed the automatic Income Verification Program application – YOU DO NOT NEED TO RENEW. New York State, Erie County and the Town of Eden will NOT call any property owner asking for personal information over the phone. There have been some reported cases of people (mostly seniors) receiving phone calls stating they are in jeopardy of losing their exemptions unless they provide their social security number, income, driver’s license numbers, etc. DO NOT GIVE THIS INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE! If we have any questions, we may call, but will ask you to bring in or send the information to our office. If you are unsure, err on the side of caution and call our office at 995-9135 to confirm.

The Evans and Brant-Farnham Historical Societies take 5th place at the Erie County Fair

The Evans and Brant-Farnham Historical Societies teamed up once again for this year’s Erie County Fair Historical Exhibit. The combined effort resulted in two ribbons: Fifth Place and Theme.

The 2019 suggested theme for all participating WNY historical societies to follow (not mandatory, but suggested if you want to win an extra ribbon) was “A day that changed our town’s history”. Our submission to the Erie County Fair Committee stated in part: “The Buffalo and State line railroad opened February 2nd, 1852 and so with its coming Evans Station was born. And with the transportation came commerce and people. Our desolate sparsely populated community of a few farmers and a saw and grist mill suddenly grew. That day in our history opened the gates of opportunity for farmers to sell their crops to the city markets. Farms developed and began exporting fruit, berries, fresh vegetables and grains. With this growth a new industry emerged “The Canning Company” that brought year round employment, farming, retail shops, hotels, service and more.”

We of course must add that the Buffalo and State Line railroad also came through the village of Farnham at Farnham Station. Numerous canning factories sprung up in the village of Farnham and the town of Brant; The Erie Preserving Company, Great Lakes Packing, Fort Stanwix Canning Company, Ellis Canning Company and U.S. Canning Company, to name more than a few. And did you know that Bison Canning Company started in 1926 on a farm in Brant, New York? A year later they moved to Angola, continuing as Bison Canning Company until 1991 when they were purchased by Goya Foods, Inc. Through our display we tried to emphasize the fact, that both the Evans and the Brant-Farnham communities have strong historical ties to each other and to this year’s theme.

Businesses and industries highlighted in our display were the Emblem Bicycle Factory, Lythe Tile Company, Goya Food Great Lakes and all the canning companies mentioned previously from the town of Brant and village of Farnham.

Note that most of these businesses and buildings were and some still are located near the railroad lines. Enlarged photos of a train loaded with canned goods at the Erie Preserving Canning Company in 1877 and a Great Lakes Packing “Blue Top Brand” tomato label were placed on the back wall. A variety of photos, business receipts and corresponding short history descriptions were included and mounted as well. Many Evans and Brant agricultural items were on display including an apple box, dairy related items, an 1880’s seed shipping box, a few Lily shipping boxes (these shipped from Japan to the Schoellkoph Farm in Evans in 1955) and a 32 quart strawberry shipping box (handmade by an early Brant resident Edward Falk and donated to the Brant-Farnham Historical Society by Sonny Catalano). The display’s rough cut spruce floor was made from trees once standing in Caryl’s yard in Angola, N.Y. The setup/take down committee consisted of : Denny, Bob, Denise, Anna and Caryl.
