TOWN OF EDEN BONUS BULK GARBAGE PICKUP During the week of October 3rd only, you are allowed up to 10 items outside of your tote for bulk garbage pickup.

The recycling and bulk pickup schedule is available at http://edenny.gov/garbage-management/.

Reminder: the garbage totes have serial numbers that are assigned to your property. If you move, please leave the totes at the property. The only exception to this rule is if you purchased extra totes.

Each property is allowed to purchase one extra garbage tote and one extra recycle tote for a one-time fee of $65 each.

These can be purchased at the Clerk’s Office in the Eden Town Hall.

The LoGrasso Family. We believe the photo was taken at their home on Ellis Road, where in 1901 they established their cheese factory and winery. Photo submitted by Christian LoGrasso.

1901: Ellis Canning factory opens on Ellis Road. Samuel and Jack Ellis, sons of Joseph and Phyllis Ellis, founded the company. Samuel became President of the company. In addition to processing their own crops, produce was purchased from local farmers. Strawberries, pears, tomatoes and ketchup were packed. All fruit was peeled by hand. Cans were made on the premises and were soldered.

1901: Frank LoGrasso owns a Cheese Factory and Winery on *Grannis Road. Francesco and Alfonsia LoGrasso originally from Valledolmo, Sicily, Italy purchased land on *Grannis Road in 1895, then sold it to Francesco Catalano in 1901. On March 1, 1901, Francesco LoGrasso and son Sebastian acquired another farm on the same road (the Caruso now Bliss family home) and established a cheese factory and winery. Francesco died in 1903, leaving the real estate to his son, Sebastian, who continued operating the business. The family did not have cows, so all milk was purchased and delivered to the farm by trucks. After his wife Lucia died, he remarried and he and his second wife Antoinette continued the business until 1930 when he ceased all operations. (*Grannis Road was later named Ellis Road.)

1903: Vance Cheese factory on Brant-Angola Road near Ellis Road closes. To be continued.

The Annual Brant Summer Festival Parade was held on Saturday June 19th. The parade judges this year included: past Town of Brant Supervisor Leonard K. Pero, Shannon Shepherd (Town of Evans Public Relations Assistant to Evans Supervisor Mary Hosler) and Town of Brant residents Sandy Fininzio and Joanne Kaczmarek.

We were elated to learn that Lenny was in back in his hometown and that he was willing to say “YES” to helping us out this year! Many will recall that it was the idea of Lenny and his daughter Amanda (Pero) West to organize and establish the Brant Summer Festival way back in 2003. We are celebrating our 17th Annual Festival this year (minus one year for Covid in 2020).

It was certainly our pleasure to have Shannon Shepherd join us as a parade judge this year.

The Town of Evans is celebrating their 200th Year (Bicentennial) and has been very busy with their own activities. It was so great of them (and Shannon of course!) to help us out!

And last but not least, our town of Brant residents Sandy and Joanne - these two smiling ladies are always willing to lend a hand when needed. You will find them participating and helping out at many local events.

Together these four judges were able to select the parade winners in the seven different categories. We will have more on their winning selections in a future article!

SCARECROW CONTEST ATTENTION FAMILIES AND ORGANIZATIONS This year we would like to get into the Halloween spirit by creating a horde of scarecrows to line Main Street created by local residents, organizations, or businesses. Scarecrows will be displayed from Oct. 7th through Nov. 2nd. A committee will judge the scarecrows based on creativity, quality and visibility.

Scarecrows will be displayed along Main Street in Eden Starting Oct. 7, 2021 to Nov. 2, 2021

Paul and Sylvia Zittel entertained a crowd of 80 Friday, September 17, 2021 with gospel music at First Baptist Church of Eden. The weather was perfect for the outdoor concert under the pavilion. Their 4 grandchildren sang an original number with them that their parents used to sing when they were little. After the concert everyone enjoyed an ice cream sundae.

Green St., Depot, and Hemlock St's: When you travel down Depot St, toward Hemlock St., you first see LaingGro Fertilizers. Its ironic that this business was started by a son of Floyd Laing who used to have a Feed Mill nearby.

A grandson took over Laingro, building it up to what it is now, and he has since retired. Travailing further to Hemlock you will see a building next to the tracks, that was the Nagle Lumber Mill. Ivan could make anything out of wood including kitchen cupboards and cabinets. I remember visiting there one time and was amazed at the belt system he had to run his machinery. II have read that the building was originally a feed store built by George Bartoo in 1895.(from Doris Anderson's History)

CONTEST ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible for prizes, registered scarecrows must be secured to assign post no later than 4PM on October 15th.

The theme for the day was medieval times including activities to coincide. Creating medieval princess hats and family heritage shields to use in costume related activities topped the day. Favorite game, bingo, “medieval style “ and sing along with accordionist Dave Gawronski was cheered on by the Respite lords and ladies. Under a canopy of medieval chandeliers, a luncheon was served consisting of chicken stew, fresh pear salad, and sword and shield apple crisp, delighting the palates of the guests. The Eden Respite Program is in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association, NYS Caregivers and Respite Coalition, and NYS Office for the Aging. Established in 2015, the Eden Respite Program is a monthly program intended to provide individuals suffering with dementia an opportunity to partake in a social, secure and supportive environment while giving caregivers the temporary relief they need.
