The Couple was married at Blessed Trinty Catholic Church in Buffalo in 1948. James Grey was employed as a switchman for the New York Telephone Company for 42 years before he retired. His wife worked as a bus driver for the Sweet Home Central School District for 39 years before she retired. The Greys are the parents of Jim, Eileen, Maureen, Joe, John and Michele.

They have 20 grandchildren and 28 great- grandchildren.

Eden Launches Hometown Heroes Project

Newell-Faulkner Post 880 American Legion is teaming up with the Town of Eden and the Captain John J. Levulis Memorial Foundation to announce the Eden Hometown Heroes Project. The initiative will honor Eden residents, past and present, who have served in the U.S. military with personalized banners displayed along Main Street. Plans call for 30-40 banners to be hung from light poles in the town’s business district from April through Veterans Day 2019.

“The Town of Eden has a rich history of military service, dating back to the Revolutionary War,” said NewellFaulkner Post 880 Commander James Blidy. “This project honors those brave individuals who have served or are currently serving our nation in the Armed Forces. I thank our community and our members for supporting it.”

The patriotic banners will include a picture of the service member along with their name, rank, military branch and years of service or conflict. A sample banner will be unveiled during Veterans’ Day ceremonies at noon on November 11, 2018 at Newell-Faulkner Post 880, 2912 Legion Drive.

The Eden Town Board has endorsed the project. Town employees and equipment will assist volunteers in hanging the banners.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for the Town of Eden to show its appreciation to friends and neighbors who have defended our nation and our freedom,” said Eden Town Supervisor Melissa M. Hartman. “I look forward to seeing the banners lining Main Street next year.”

The Captain John J. Levulis Memorial Foundation has donated $3,000 to purchase brackets and poles to hang the banners. Several town businesses have also made donations to support the project.

“John would be so proud to support a project that honors men and women from his hometown that served in the military,” said John’s mother, Barbara Levulis. “John had great respect for all veterans and would be very happy to see them recognized in this way.”

The project is open to current and former Eden residents, and members of American Legion Post 880 who served or are serving in any branch of the military. Applications are available at Newell-Faulkner Post 880 on Legion Drive, at the Clerk’s Office in Eden Town Hall and at Eden Shurfine.

Each banner will cost $150. Applications and payment are due by February 1, 2019. Once the banners are removed, they will be given to the service member honored or their family.

Those interested in donating to the project can make checks payable to Newell-Faulkner Post 880 and mail them to Eden’s Hometown Heroes Project c/o Karen Ferguson, 2912 Legion Drive, Eden, NY 14057.

The Captain John J. Levulis Memorial Foundation honors and celebrates the life of U.S. Army CPT John J. Levulis through charitable giving and community-based action.

The Eden native was a combat infantryman with the 2nd Battalion 87th Infantry Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division. He completed a nine-month tour in Afghanistan from 2013-2014 earning a Bronze Star and a Combat Infantry Badge. In May 2015, while in route to training at Ft. Dix, New Jersey, the Humvee Levulis was traveling in was struck by a civilian vehicle. Levulis died from injuries suffered in the accident. _________

Robert N. Sandy

Robert N. Sandy, age 86, of North Boston, NY died Tuesday, September 11, 2018. He was born on September 24, 1931, and was raised in Sinclairville, Chautauqua County, NY. Bob was the son of the late Robert H. and V. Pearl (nee: Nelson) Sandy. Bob graduated from Cassadaga Valley High. Bob was a proud Air Force Veteran who served during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan and Suwon, South Korea.

He enjoyed a successful career working with computers for UNIVAC, which later became UNISYS. Bob married his loving wife Dorothy J. Hilton in 1957 and they were married for 61 wonderful years. Bob is survived by his wife Dorothy, his children; Charles N. (Mie) Sandy and Robert H. (Susan) Sandy; his grandchildren, Rei, Kai, Stephen and Eric; his great granddaughter Olivia. Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and a supportive member in his community. His outgoing personality, kindness, and compassion for others will be remembered by many. Family and friends are invited to call on Friday, September 14, 2018 from 2-4 and 7-9PM at the Laing Funeral Home Inc., 2724 W. Church St., Eden.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 11AM in the Orchard Park Wesleyan Church, 7295 Ellicott Rd, Orchard Park. Flowers gratefully declined.
