Eden Recreation Summer Camp ended with a ton of fun. Day camp Throughout the summer kids enjoyed playground games, theme days, field trips to Maid of the Mist in Niagara Falls, The Buffalo Zoo and Tift Nature Preserve. They also had opportunities to walk to the library, Tim Horton's and the Dairy Queen. Campers also enjoyed daily crafts, chalk art, open swim, sports to name a few. Special events included a Magician Show and the talent show. The last day included a balloon artist, snow cones, hot dog picnic, and a cornhole tournament. Cornhole winners and runners up received a free ride pass to the Eden Corn Festival. Other ride passes were given to the t-shirt designer for the 2023 Rec T-shirt and 3 passes were drawn at random from campers that were in attendance. The Eden Corn Fest committee donated the passes and lent the cornhole boards for the tournament.

The first parade began at Perry and Commercial Streets in Farnham (alongside of St. Anthony’s Church) and finished at the Lonesome Pine Riding Stable Arena. More than a few Farnham residents emerged from their homes to watch the parade travel along its route. (We believe the last parade in Farnham was five years ago; held during 2017 to celebrate the 125thAnniversary of Farnham.)
On Saturday June 18th, two Brant Summer Festival Parades were held, making the task of selecting winners a bit trickier than previous years. Winners would be determined by the combination of both parades. The judges for this year’s Brant Summer Festival Parades were town of Brant resident Joanne Kaczmarek, Tonawanda residents David Gardner and Christiane Bedard and Nancy Koch of Cheektowaga, N.Y. Working together, these four enthusiastic judges were able to select the parade winners in the seven different categories.

By 1888 the telephone was in use in Eden (Doris Anderson's History) A telephone was erected from the residence of Joseph Schintzius to the residence of John Bauer at that time. I lived with my family in a double residence, My grandfather and grandmother lived in the large side. We didn't have a phone, and the first I knew about a phone in the house, my grandfather had, and it had a white dial and the number on it was 101W.
Brant Summer Festival Parade Judges of 2022
The second parade began shortly following the first, with a starting point of Hammond Road and Rt. 249, heading towards and into the Brant Town Park. Festival goers lined the roadway as the parade traveled in and throughout the main festival area of the park. During the Farnham Parade, the judges were set up at the Farnham Fire Hall, and for the Brant Parade, they were set up just inside the Brant Park near the pool area. All drivers should know that the fine for passing a stopped school bus ranges from a minimum of $250 and up to $4000 and/or up to 30 days in jail for the first violation. Additionally, a conviction places 5 points on your driver’s license and may result in increased insurance premiums. If convicted of three violations in three years, your license will be revoked for a minimum of six months. It goes without saying that even one instance of passing a stopped school bus is unacceptable; it could mean the life of a child.
Parents need to also take time to instruct their school-aged children on school bus safety.

Children need to know to stand at least three giant steps (6 feet) away from the curb when waiting for the bus to arrive. Children must also wait until the bus comes to a complete stop, the doors open, and the driver says it is okay before stepping onto the bus. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the greatest risk is not while riding on the school bus, but getting on or getting off. Children need to be reminded to be cautious in and around the “danger zone” of the school bus, which is the 10 feet in front, behind and on each side of the school bus. When the new school year begins in the coming weeks, I remind motorists not to drive distracted, slow down around school zones and be alert for children approaching or exiting school buses. As summer winds down, children across Erie County are heading back to school and the “Yellow School Buses” once again dot our roadways. For the over 120,000 elementary and secondary students in Erie County, the school day begins and ends with a trip on a school bus. Many children will be going to school for the first time and may not be careful when crossing the street or running to catch the bus. Older children know the routine, but may forget in their excitement to catch up with friends. Unfortunately, each year some bus trips to school end in tragedy -- children are injured or killed in school bus incidents when motorists fail to follow the rules of the road. There are an estimated 50,000 or more incidences of motor vehicles illegally passing school buses every day in New York State. Although drivers are required to stop for a school bus when it is stopped to load or unload passengers, children should not rely on them to do so, a fact that parents should discuss with their children prior to the start of the school year. The rules of the road in New York State are specific when it comes to school buses. Drivers need to know and obey the “flashing signal light system” that school bus drivers use to alert motorists of pending actions. Yellow flashing lights indicate that the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. That is the time to slow down and prepare to stop your vehicle. Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate that the bus has stopped, and that children are getting on or off the bus. Motorists must stop their cars at least 20 feet away from the bus and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop sign is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before they can start driving again. This law applies on all roadways in New York State, even when approaching from the opposite direction of a divided highway.

Finishing first place over all 37 runners, Matthew was presented a plaque for his amazing achievement.
A very familiar name in North Collins has retired as North Collins Town Historian. Georgianne Bowman was the appointed Historian for 20 years. Mrs. Bowman has been well-known for many years from her publication of multiple research articles of historical information in local publications. An officer and active member of the North Collins Historical Society, she was instrumental in presentations of historical displays in the Historical Museum on Center Street and the Quaker Meeting House on Route 62. She was also a very active leader in the 4-H Club and school parents’ groups. The Town will miss her participation and leadership. As required by State law, The Town Board has appointed former Town Clerk Margaret Orrange as the new historian. Every Town, Village, City, and County in New York State is required to appoint an hisitorian to preserve local history. Mrs. Orrange served as Town Clerk for 36 years from 1980-2015 and previously taught in the High School, and has helped current and former residents answer questions about the Town. She has bachelors’ and masters’ degrees in English and Education, with a minor concentration in History. She knows that it will be difficult to follow Mrs. Bowman’s legacy, but she hopes to continue to help residents of the Town know about the proud Town history.
