IS ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR GRANTS If your community group needs funding for a project that will benefit the people of Eden, you may be eligible to apply for a grant from The Eden Community Foundation, Inc. Individuals who have an idea for a community improvement project are also encouraged to apply. No funds are available for scholarships or personal needs.

Eden Garden Study Club Recipient of Eden Community Foundation 2018 Spring Grant

On the first year anniversary of the installation and dedication of the Blue Star Memorial Marker, located on the grounds of the Newell Faulkner Post 880 American Legion, the Eden Garden Study Club (EGSC), assisted by Turnbull Nursery, landscaped the base of the monument. Monies granted to EGSC from the Eden Community Foundation, were used to complete the monument sight.

The monument garden is designed with long lasting herbaceous perennial plantings. Appropriately, the red, white and blue flowering specimens symbolize the USA and all branches of our military, and those who serve. Maintenance of the marker garden is provided by the Eden Garden Study Club and Newell Faulkner Post 880. ________

Obituaries

Sharon A. Brockman

Sharon A. Brockman, age 74, of Eden, New York died Sunday, August 12, 2018 surrounded by her loving family.

Sharon was born January 20, 1944; a daughter of the late Joseph and Irma Romano. She graduated from the Eden Central School District.

She was the owner of Brockman’s Greenhouse on route 62 in Eden for many years.

She supplied Eden and surrounding areas with her beautiful home grown flowers and vegetables. She was very active in the Eden community as she was a NYS Board Certified Eden Town Assessor for 20 years. She was a 40 plus year member of the Eden Chamber of Commerce, where she served on the board and as a Past Vice President. She was also the Eden Garden Club Liaison for the chamber. She sat on the Scholarship, Chicken BBQ and Annual Membership committees. She was chosen the Eden Chamber Business of the year in 2011. She was a member of the Eden Garden Study Club; where she was the Treasurer for the last four years and was the Chairman of the club’s Horticultural Consultant Committee for over 10 years. She also was the Conservation & Environmental Protection Chairman. She also participated in the Eden Raider’s Response Day for the Chamber Park clean up and weekly maintenance. She helped plant the hanging baskets and pots that we see up and down Eden’s Main Street ever year. She was active in the Garden Therapy with the residents at Eden Heights. She entered the Erie County Fairs Horticulture Events at the Creative Arts Building and the Grange with her flowers and vegetables. She won many years with blue ribbons and several Horticultural Excellence Awards. Sharon was a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church; where she was a member of the Alter and Rosary Society and a member of the Bereavement Committee, putting on many after funeral luncheons. Sharon also was involved as a 4-H leader for over 30 years. In her spare time she enjoyed her position as Past President of the Thursday Morning Early Morning Bowling Team and countless hours volunteering for the Eden-North Collins Food Pantry; along with processing all of the entries for the corn festival’s pet show, since its start.

She was the wife of late Butch Brockman, mother of Brenda Atkinson, sister of Kathy (Bill) Sanders, Joseph (Debbie) Romano and Debbie Carnall. Also survived by a sister in law, Rita (Don) Stuhr and generations of nieces and nephews. Family and friends called at the Laing Funeral Home Inc. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, August 17 in the Immaculate Conception Church Eden, NY. Memorial may be made to Immaculate Conception Church. Karen Munson (Sanford), age 59, of Cherry Creek, NY, formerly ofd Angola, NY, passed away on August 10, 2018, after a long battle with COPD and congestive heart failure.

Karen was born on November 20, 1958, and resided in Eden, NY, where she graduated from Eden Senior High School in 1977. Karen spent many years with her father, Raymond Sanford Jr., on his traveling carnival, Zabel’s Amusements.

Karen operated rides, worked in the ticket booths and mastered the art of making cotton candy. In the early 1990's she moved to Angola, NY, with her thenhusband. She continued working and living the simple life, planting gardens, making jams and baking, while raising her five children: Roxanne (Travis) Wright , Nicole (Edward) Gessey, Melissa (Scott) Giles, Brian (Chelsea) Hanner, and Brandon (Anjeanette) Munson.

Karen spent several years in Angola before relocating to Cherry Creek to be closer to her daughter, who cared for her infinitely. Karen was a devoted and loving mother. She was extremely proud of her children's accomplishments and was excited to become a "Nana" to her grandchildren. Karen loved holidays and family get-togethers, endless Sunday football talks with her Dad, and reading stories to her grandkids. Any chance to spend time with her family was her greatest joy.

She was known for her robust sense of humor and an unconditional love for those close to her. Karen believed you should never pass up a chance to say, “I love you.” Even though she struggled to speak with her COPD later in life, it never stopped her from portraying this sentiment to her beloved children and grandchildren with a heart symbol. As her children have expressed, "Mom, you gave one hell of a fight the last year and a half. Someone in heaven just needs a mom and nana. They don't realize how lucky they are to have you." "Today is the hardest day of my life I had to say goodbye to my mom! She was so amazing and the strongest woman I knew. She had a horrible disease and never gave up for us kids and her grandbabies.

Mom, I miss you so much already, but I know you're your pain free and watching over all of us. Your sun has set and what a beautiful one it was. Till we meet again Mom, fly high, I love you!!!" "Ever since I was a little girl I feared this day, you are free now, no more pain no more struggling to survive. I love you Mom, may you rest in peace." "This world is not going to be the same without you in it, this isn't goodbye, until we meet again, fly high our guardian angel.” Karen is survived by her parents, siblings, children and 12 grandchildren: Sarah, Nathan, Ryleigh, Alexis, Brant, Genevieve, Brice, Briella, Keegan, Blake, Skyler, and her unborn grandchild that is expected to arrive on her 60th birthday.
