Eden Raiders Trap Team

In the Spring of 2018 the Eden Raiders Trap Team was formed and joined the NYS High School Clay Target League. On June 9, team members had the opportunity to travel to Cicero, NY, for NYS competition. Members representing Eden were Jarek Rauker, Miriam Hoelscher, Elyott Stappenbeck, Jacob Filbey, Jansen Rauker and Chase Bugenhagen (front). Eden placed 17 out of 42 NYS schools. Miriam Hoelscher took 3rd place for JV Female High Gun with a score of 84/100. The League also recognized Elyott Stappenbeck as a top 100 League Shooter for NYS with a 21.8 spring season average. Eden Raiders has formed a squad that traveled to Mason, Michigan, for National competition in July. ________

Evans District #12 Schoolhouse - Grades 1 - 5, June 1946 According to 2007 historical records prepared by then Evans Historian Cheryl Delano, the Evans School #12 was known as the Lake Bay School and was located on the Old Lake Shore Road. The Niagara Frontier Volleyball 16U Boys Gold team traveled to Phoenix, Arizona to compete in the prestigious Boys’ National Championship Tournament. The tournament took place from July 4th to July 8th and drew the 40 top teams in the United States and Puerto Rico. All 40 teams earned a bid to the National Championships by placing high in a regional qualifying tournament.

On the first day of the day tournament, the team drew the #1 ranked team in the country, Borinquen Coqui (Puerto Rico) in its first match. Despite the tough match-up, the team took the second game of the match, forcing a 15 point tie breaking game. The third game was nip and tuck, as NFVB tied the score at 9-9.

However, on that very play, one key player suffered a knee injury. From that point, the Puerto Rican team stretched their lead and won the deciding game, 15-12. Subsequently, Borinquen Coqui made it all the way to the tournament championship match (and finished 2nd in the tournament) Unfortunately, NFVB 16 Gold had a difficult time adjusting to the injury of their teammate. They lost the next two matches on the first day of the tournament (against Long Island and a team from Texas).

On day two and three of the tournament, the boys bounced back and won 3 of their 5 matches. NFVB Gold beat teams from Florida, Virginia and Ohio and lost to teams from Arizona and Wisconsin.

The final day of the tournament is organized into 9 distinct playoff brackets.

NFVB’s final bracket placement would see the team vying for 29th through 32nd place in the tournament (out of 40), dependent on how they played that day.

First up, the team faced Warren Six Pack (New Jersey). After playing very poorly in the first game, and losing 25-15, NFVB Gold won the next two games to take the match.

Ironically, the team moved on to the finals of the bracket, playing their regional rival from Rochester, Pace Bootleggers. NFVB dominated Pace in the first game, winning 25-17. Pace then returned the favor, dominating the 2nd game, 25-13.

In the final nail-biting game, Pace defeated NFVB Gold 15-13.

NFVB finished the tournament in 30th place (of 40 teams).

Players who competed on the team (and their hometowns) are: Jake Basinski (Eden), Saferino Dour (Buffalo), Jake Janus (OP), Greg Jubulis (OP), Nate Lippitt (OP), Alex Overhoff (Eden), Teddy Payne (Clarence), Nate Petrik (West Seneca), Nick Thomas (OP) and Josh Williams (Eden). The team is coached by Robert Pierce and Justin Waldorf. ________

WORLD RECORD WOODEN TURNED BOWL: The Woodworker’s Clubhouse is looking to break the record for the World’s Largest Wooden Turned Bowl during the Fair. The current world record has a diameter of 13-feet, the ‘Western New York’s bowl’ will measure 15-feet in diameter; it will have a depth over 4-feet and will weight in excess of 5,000 pounds. The Woodworker’s Clubhouse, located in West Seneca, NY (an open to the public wood shop) will be undertaking this endeavor and will be turning the bowl on their custom lathe every day during the fair until it is completed, once complete the Bowl will be on display for family picture taking.

North Collins Veterans Tribute Update

The latest event for the North Collins Veterans Tribute was attending the WNY Volunteer Fireman's Convention at Fricano Park this past weekend. We were very lucky to have a bus, donated by DWB Enterprise, that was decorated and recognizing veterans and their service to this country. The bus had insignias of all branches of service. It had American Flags on it. It was a sight to see. The Veterans Tribute Board was present all three days of the Convention and staffing the bus. For a donation to the Tribute, any amount, attendees at the Convention could sign the bus in honor of a veteran or wishes to our veterans. A fair amount of money for the Tribute was raised and it was a positive experience being there to support our men and women who volunteer to fight fires, save property and save lives, while in many cases, risking their own safety. ________

Summer preschool students at Buffalo Hearing and Speech Center’s Angola location enjoy their new playground. Students anticipated summer playground fun after watching their new playground being built in the Fall just in time for the winter cold.

Fun at Eden Recreation

The Eden Recreation Program had approximately 280 campers registered this summer! It has been an exciting summer with themed crafts, field trips, a Can Jam competition, a corn hole competition, a basketball clinic and a talent show. The Weekly Themes included Beach Week, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Week, History Week, Animal Adventure Week and Reach for the Stars Week. Campers had the opportunity to go Evangola State Park, Hidden Valley Animal Adventure and Genesse Country Museum.

Recreation ended with a picnic on July 31st with the hot dog lunch being provided through a donation from the Eden Town Chamber of Commerce. ________

Hamburg Writers’ Group Bolsters Local Authors

After retiring from the Buffalo Fire Department, Jim Miner decided he wanted to write. He knew he had talent, but what he needed was a support community. He started gathering like-mined people willing to share their writing journeys with him. Seven years later, that gathering has expanded to about a dozen published authors who call themselves the Hamburg Writers’ Group. They meet every Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the Comfort Zone Café, 17 Main Street in Hamburg to read and discuss their stories and poems.

Numerous local, national, and international outlets have published member’s work, in styles varying from poetry and flash fiction to short stories, novels, and memoirs. On Fridays, this diverse group gathers in a circle in a room at the back of the Comfort Zone. The goal is to help the author improve their story, poem, or article. If a writer wishes to share a portion of their work, the members listen intently. Then, the floor is opened for general comments and positive reinforcement.

The HWG accepts new members from time to time. Currently they are at capacity, however guests are welcomed and encouraged to listen.

Their most recent anthology, “Best of 2016,” is available for purchase at the Comfort Zone.

Discussing his experience as part of a supportive writing group, long-time HWG member Nelson R. Locher stated, “Most often listeners are transported to other worlds and exciting venues. It becomes visual. Their work puts us right next to the characters. It’s a joy to share and hear all the distinctive stories. Who would have thought we could travel around the world, without leaving the room?

This is who we are!”

Affectionately referred to as the Bard of Boston, Locher wanted to share his enthusiasm for poetry with the wider community. He decided to try selecting light verse written by people in the Buffalo Southtowns. “People love humorous poems. Why not make a place where they can share their creations?”

“I wanted to bring some of my enjoyment to the larger community.

The Hamburg Writers’ Group enthusiastically supports establishing a regular “Poetry Corner” where local poets could submit uplifting, light-hearted and/or witty poems for possible publication.” __________________________________________

After all the records were broken, he never lost the name.

It will be with him forever at the Baseball Hall of Fame.

—Bridget Willard Most of us would not admit to this, but remember the thrill it used to bring. New pens, pencils and notebooks. Maybe a new lunch box or a new outfit to wear for the first day of school. August always brought a little anticipation about new kids who might be in your class and how the year would go.

There is an excitement to August that is more subtle as we age.

Even though it’s still hot, we’ve begun that shift to autumn activities.

Groups that we belong to might have taken a break for the summer but are now gearing up again. Even the foods we make for meals start to change as we stop just throwing hot dogs on the grill.

It’s amazing how quickly the seasons roll past. Our summer is winding down already. Even if you’re past the age for new school clothes, go treat yourself to something new and remember the times your mom took you school shopping.
