YOUR CHOICE In its earliest days, Eden’s center of commerce was concentrated around the four corners of Main and Church Streets. With the coming of the railroad in the mid-1870s there was an expansion and shift to Green and Depot Streets. Green Street was cut through from Main Street to Depot to allow for easier access to the railroad station. An examination of maps from 1880 and 1909 show dramatic changes in the number of businesses and where they were located.

In 1880, with exception of one cooper’s shop on the corner of Green and Depot, the block banded by Green and Hemlock between Main and Depot was largely open land with a few houses. This parcel of land plus the area to the south as far as Sandrock Road was purchased

by James Green from the Holland Land Company after he came to Eden in 1818. In the decades following the arrival of railroad service, James Green, Jr. must have accrued a nice nest egg from the sale of plots of land he had inherited from his father.

By 1909 there were two stores, a blacksmith shop, a service station, the telephone exchange and several more residences on Green Street. One of the stores, Dickmans, was located on the south side of the street near Main. The structure was originally built as the Eden Academy in 1842 on West Church Street. It was subsequently sold to the Baptist congregation who worshipped there until 1895 when they decided to build a new church. The building was sold and moved to Green Street where it became the store and a residence. In 1913, a spectacular fire destroyed the store and the houses on either side of it. In the photo above, Eden’s Coronet Band can be seen marching past those three structures.

Farther on down the street was Taylor’s store. The structure was originally an old horse shed located across the railroad tracks at the Phatiger Hotel. In 1896, Bradley Taylor moved the shed, added onto it and opened a store. The upstairs was at one time a skating rink and a meeting room where the Catholics held services before the old Immaculate Conception Church was built in 1908. Taylor’s building was a store for many years under subsequent owners, the last enterprise being an antique store. It has stood empty for the last several years.

On the corner of Green and Depot was a service station which had been Kaufman’s store until George Bartoo purchased it and began selling gasoline. The brick structure operated as a service station for many years. It was torn down in 1974.

Across the street from Bartoo’s station was the complex of five buildings belonging to the Redfield-Davis Hardware store. Begun in 1889 by Merrill Redfield and Eugene Davis, the establishment was known to be the largest hardware store in the area. One of their 1899 advertisements stated that they dealt in “Hardware, coal, lime, cement, brick, buggies, etc.“ Eventually, they also dealt in plumbing supplies as more people began installing running water and bathrooms in their homes. In more recent times, the site was home to Haney Antiques and Auctions, and it is now owned by gunsmith Adam Henrich.

Heading back up Green street toward Main, the 1909 map shows several residences and then the Eden Telephone Exchange building (above in 1908.) Privately owned telephone lines began appearing in Eden around 1902. The next year a corporation was formed and poles and wires were installed to expand the service.

Space prevents a more extensive description of the area, so I will be sharing more information at a later date.
