Erie County Legislator John Mills recently presented a proclamation to H.F. Rucker Lumber Company in Boston in honor of its 100th anniversary. The company was founded in 1921 by Henry Rucker who wanted to expand into dimensional lumber which was growing in popularity due to new construction techniques that did not require skilled laborers, was less expensive and allowed ordinary men to build their own homes.

In 1936, Henry partnered with Earl May and H.F. Rucker Lumber Company became an important part of life in Boston. Henry devoted his time in both free labor and free lumber to organizations in town such as the Boston Conservation Club, the Athletic Society’s bleachers in 1949 as well as forming the first fire tax district in Boston and many more.

Alfred Rettig took over the business as owner after Henry retired in 1968 and Earl May left the business. Alfred was a lumberman-born-farmer from Orchard Park and incorporated Rucker Lumber in 1975 where it has remained in the Rettig family. Rucker Lumber continued on as a family business in 1970 when Alfred’s daughter Nancy joined the business followed by her sisters Gail and Janet in 1975—consequently making Rucker Lumber a certified women-owned business and a true value partner with a new 5,000 sq. ft. store and even larger warehouse.

Legislator Mills said, “Rucker Lumber is one of the most well-known businesses in Boston, New York. I am proud of every single owner for building the company from the ground up to the incredibly successful business it is today. Many residents from near and far rely on its services. I wish you 100 more years of continued success.”

Over the past few weeks, our 3rd graders have been making their First Holy Communion. On Wednesday, May 26th, we gathered as a school (the elementary grades) to observe the special occasion in Mass along with the May Crowning of the Blessed Mary. The boys and girls in 3rd Grade looked beautiful and very dapper in their white gowns and neat suits. The class gathered with their parents after for a small reception. Our 3rd Grade teacher, Miss Zappia did a wonderful job planning such a lovely ceremony for the kids!

Do’s and Don’ts for Dads

Don’t – Provoke your children to wrath. Don’t make them angry. Don’t scold them. When correcting them use soft words (see Proverbs 15:1). When instructing them go over something three times before you hold them responsible. For instance, don’t say “clean your room,” say “let me show you how to clean your room.” Do it several times yourself with them. Then they will know what to do and how to do it. Don’t yell at them for their room being a mess if they don’t know what to do. They are not mind readers. They learn by example.

Dads, you start out as your children’s hero. Work to keep it that way. Don’t provoke them. Praise them. Bless them.

Do – Bring them up in the nurture (education and training) and admonition (mild rebukes or warnings) of the Lord. Dads, you need to know the Lord so you can bring your kids up in the knowledge of the Lord. How sad if our kids don’t know God. The church can help dads. The book of Proverbs can help dads. It was a gorgeous day on May 31. It was Memorial Day. The sun was shining. Temperature was perfect. Slight breeze. It was a day at the North Collins Veterans Tribute to recognize our men and women who serve and have served this country. They are the ones who make days like May 31 even possible. We owe them so much. The American Legion Post 1640 was there in force and Presented Arms. The raising of the Flags was done to perfection. There were prominent guest speakers and a huge audience of community members who appreciated the service and the recognition of service. The first annual plant sale was held and was a huge success. The Lakeshore & Michigan Southern Railroad Depot at Farnham, N.Y. Brant Cemetery sign for Samuel Fuller, who in was in his 89th year when he died in 1842. He came to Brant in 1835. Samuel, was a Private in the Revolution serving from 1776 to 1777 in Connecticut, New Hampshire and Vermont.

1839 - Town of Brant created by New York Legislature on March 25th. The town was formed of land from Evans and Collins, and was named after Mohawk Chief Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea).

1839 - Jonathan Hascall Jr., the son of Baptist Minister, is Brant’s first Supervisor.

1839 - April 16th. The first town meeting is held at the residence of Ansel Smith. This home later became the Joseph F. Catalano home. It was and still is located on the Brant-North Collins Road.

1839 - The Brant Protestant Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Brant. The burial places of Elias Chapin and Samuel Fuller, the only Revolutionary soldiers in the area, are located in this cemetery. Elias Chapin who died in 1839 at the age of 88 came to Brant in 1834. He had enlisted in April of 1775 soon after the battle of Lexington, and served as a Private with the light dragoons during the Revolution until 1777. Samuel Fuller died in 1842 at 89 years of age.

1839 - Brant population 900 / Farnham population 300 1840 - Total taxes collected in Brant $116.82.

1840 - Buffalo population 18,213. Erie County population 62,465.

1840 or 1842 - Methodists formed a class under Rev. Mr. Fenton in pastoral connection with Evans Church. In 1880 there were 47 members.

1845 - The population of Brant was 987.

1845 - Brant teacher, A.F. Brown’s pay was $14.48/month.

1846 - The United States flag had 29 stars.

1848 - Brant School teacher’s wages were $14.48/month.

Increasing in 1873 to $17.25/month 1850 - Brant population 1028. The part of town open to settlement by the whites was well occupied. The west end of town (closer to Lake Erie) was still thinly settled.

1852 - Buffalo State Line Railroad (later known as the Lakeshore & Michigan) established a station in Farnham, N.Y. 1855 - Nathan Tucker buys land in Brant. Brant Population is now 1093.

A Memorial Mass with full military honors will be held Saturday, June 19, 2021, at 11:00 AM from St. Joseph's RC Church, Erie Ave., Gowanda.
