This year is off to a great start for the Boys and Girls Club of Eden-Lake Shore

Our owned Eden Site had air conditioning installed, new computers, fresh paint, new flooring, and new bathroom stalls Our school site at Lake Shore has added new programming items for craft, sports and STEM projects and our older members are enjoying new recreational items.

New and exciting programming has been added to both Clubhouses, increasing the retention of our members daily attendance and enticing past members to rejoin We have implemented a new staff training program to ensure both sites are safe and fun.

Our organization is coming out of the pandemic strong Numbers are rebounding as more than 200 youth are entering a safe, positive space every single day. While annual memberships are down from pre-pandemic, the numbers continue to rise and, even more importantly, more of those members are coming every day Members are back to being excited and engaged!

Eden Central School District Celebrates Mental Health Month

For the second consecutive year, the Counseling Department at Eden Central District has worked to spread awareness amongst students, staff and the Eden community for Mental Health Month in May.

The district kicked off Mental Health Month this year on Monday, May 1st with a districtwide Mental Health Night event at the Eden Middle School/High School campus. The event included booths from over 20 local agencies and organizations. Additionally, the Eden Central School District Counseling Department provided Mental Health resources and educational information. The night included fun crafts, healthy snacks, and activities to learn about and promote positive coping skills (including making stress balls, worry buddies, calm down bottles, mindful coloring, positive affirmation bracelets and magnets). Students were also able to participate in a yoga station, fitness station, sensory station, deep breathing station and healthy snack station (make your own trail mix). Some other highlights of the event included: Therapy Dogs from the Paws for Love SPCA program, The Blend (local smoothie truck), and speaker Dr. Rebecca Schaffer who presented on “How to Recognize and Address Mental Health Issues in Youth.”

During Children’s Mental Health Week, May 8-12th, Eden CSD participated in a schoolwide Mental Health themed dress down week to help spread awareness. To provide focused education and awareness, the Counseling Department also organized daily announcements and activities to educate students about Mental Health, emotions and healthy coping skills. One of the activities included a “ Deep Breathing Drill” in which Pre-K through 5th grade students went outside to practice their deep breathing skills by blowing bubbles. These types of activities are practiced at school and can easily be implemented at home or in the community. The Counseling staff also recognized teacher and staff Mental Health by visiting employees with a healthy snack cart, decorating faculty rooms and restrooms with positive affirmations and Mental Health resources, and providing coping skills such as mindful coloring.

The efforts of the Counseling Department were made possible through the various partnerships with outside agencies and providers who were represented at the event, the ECSD PTA and the district who funded the event, and the support of the Eden Central School District administration and Board of Education who supported the event.

The East Eden Fire Company is the organization that provides fire protection and emergency services for all of the residents in the East Eden Fire District,while assisting neighboring communities and being assisted by other fire companies through mutual aid. Our firefighters undergo rigorous training to become members, donating countless hours learning the latest techniques to protect you and your families.

Hopefully you have been fortunate enough to avoid using the services we provide, but we assure you that our staffs of VOLUNTEERS are available to serve you 24 hours a day if the occasion arises.

If you have not already sent in your contribution, one of our firefighters will call on your home on the evening of June 12th or June 19th, 6:30 - 9:00 pm.

Thank you for your continuing support, which helps us to serve the community.

Last year one of the pieces of equipment we purchased with funds raised through our Fund Drives is the LUCAS DEVICE.

The LUCAS device is a mechanical chest compression-decompression system which enabled automated and continuous closed chest compression, LUCAS can be used on adult cardiac arrest patients who fit into the device. With the purchase of the Lucas device will be able to assist the Eden Emergency Squad when they are dispatched for a cardiac emergency in the East Eden community. This will provide the Eden Emergency Squad with a second Lucas device for the Town of Eden.

Jennifer J. Hunter

Jennifer J. Hunter (nee Wittmeyer) age 52, of E. Eden, NY passed away on Saturday, May 27, 2023 following a long illness. She is survived by her loving parents John and Rita (nee Lawniczak) Wittmeyer; former husband Scott Hunter, dear children Alexandria (Ryan) Vondell, Gavin and Ian (Alexa) Hunter; her loving grandchildren Easton, Rhett, and Lennon Vondell; dear sisters Cathy (Hans) Danzer and Lori (Matthew) Cowie; and loving significant other David Bonczar. The family will receive friends at 10:00 AM on Sat. June 10, 2023, at St. Mary’s Oratory Church , 8175 E. Eden Rd. E. Eden, NY followed by a Memorial Mass at 11 AM. Interment will be in St Mary’s Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Donald M. Demmerley Funeral Home. 21 Pierce Ave., Hamburg, NY. You soon forget that Eden had more than one place to eat. I don't remember what year, but Ed Schue, Sr had a Diner from Gowanda brought to Eden. It was located in the area between what is now the Liquor Store and Roberts Hair Salon In Gowanda it was known as Nelsons Diner. I remember having one meal there, and Ruby Schue, Ed Schue Sr's wife was working in the kitchen.(Pictured here is the original Diner) I would like more pictures and stories about the Diner.

At this time Flags of our Country will be inspected and condemned as unserviceable. They have reached their present state in a proper service of tribute, memory and love.

A flag may be a flimsy bit of printed gauze, or a beautiful banner of finest silk. Its intrinsic value may be trifling or great; but it’s real value is beyond price, for it is a precious symbol of all that we and our comrades have worked for and lived for, and died for-a free nation of free men and women, true to the faith of the past, devoted to the ideas and practice of Justice, Freedom and Democracy.

Let these faded

of our Country be retired and destroyed with respect and honorable rites and their place be taken by bright new Flags of the same size and kind, and let no grave of our soldier, sailor, or airman dead be unhonored and unmarked.

Procrastination is a big problem for so many. Despite the old adage, we put off doing things -- whether for fear of failure, uncertainty over how to start, or just apprehension about the newness of an activity.

No one knows how many days we will be allotted in this life, yet we squander time and fail to undertake things we really want to do. The present is fragile and fleeting; it is brief in its potential and over in a heartbeat. It is here and then gone, leaving only the remnants of our actions --if we take them.

The possibilities in life are endless, but we must gather them together and act now. Don’t wait for a better day. Today may be the only day.
