During this pandemic we have realized all of the heroes in our daily lives. We are honored to be able to present a new year of Eden’s finest. Unfortunately, we will be unable to hold our regular Memorial Day Services this year, please take a moment to remember those that have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Dear Eden Families,

May 5, 2020

It has been more than two weeks since I last wrote to you, and the Board of Education and I trust that this letter continues to find you and your loved ones safe and healthy. As you may know, Governor Cuomo has extended the school closure through the end of the current school year, and even though we may have suspected this, it does not diminish the impact for our students, parents and staff.

Teaching and learning remotely is ripe with challenges. Not all teachers or students have good connectivity. Some families and teachers have turned their kitchen counters and dining room tables into classrooms. Parents have continued working during this closure, adding to the household pressures. The support, feedback and patience our families have shown us at Eden CSD, is immeasurable. We are all learning how to do school remotely together. I know I can safely say that I do not have a playbook on how to do this. I also continue to be grateful for the financial support our Eden residents have provided our school district in recent years. With your support in the last capital project, we now have the technology infrastructure to provide instruction remotely; we were able to purchase laptops/ Chromebooks a few years ago that our students are now using to learn at home; and, because of your support, we were able to provide professional development for our teachers to use our new technology. Simply stated, had this school closure occurred even two years ago, we would not have been able to teach and learn as we are doing now.

I continue to give you updates on our meal pickup/delivery system simply because I am in awe of Personal Touch, our food service providers. All children living in the Eden CSD who are 18 and under are eligible for a breakfast/lunch during this closure.

Personal Touch is now preparing 1,344 meals for each day of the week (up from 1,000 two weeks ago). That’s 672 breakfasts and 672 lunches Monday through Sunday, all packaged following the new COVID regulations! Eden bus drivers, with the assistance of our nurses and aides, deliver meals to over 150 homes each day while following the new COVID social distancing regulations. Since we do not provide pickup or delivery on the weekends, this means that on Fridays 4,032 meals are available for pickup or delivery. That’s not easy!

Thank you, again, to our Transportation Department and support staff for organizing this project.

Finally, I want to give a SHOUT out to our Eden PTA for providing the lawn signs for our 2020 Seniors. It is so much fun to drive around town and hear the honking horns as cars drive by the home of a Senior. Our Seniors have lost so much during this closure, most recently their prom, spring sports season and the uncertainty of what graduation may look like. Certainly, this is not how any of us, Seniors and retirees, envisioned the end of our last year at Eden CSD to look, myself included.

Thank you, again, for your continued diligence to remain healthy. Since we are operating under the guidelines of essential staff and do not have the ability to check our school grounds, fields, track and playground, they all remain closed and off-limits to everyone. Please spread the word to your friends and neighbors.

Alexander E. Hutz Graduates from Norwich University Alexander E. Hutz, Eden Class of 2016 graduated from Norwich University May 2, 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in Studies of War and Peace. Alexander was an Army ROTC cadet on the Dean’s list for most of his academic career. The former varsity swimmer, lacrosse player and runner regularly earned top marks in Army physical fitness scoring.

Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont is the oldest private military college in the United States and is the birthplace of ROTC. Alexander was awarded Cadet of the Month in February 2020 for his outstanding leadership of the Pioneer Battalion.

In April 2020 Alexander was awarded the USAA Spirit Award which recognizes the cadet that best displays the traits and characteristics that embody the sprit of service to others. Alexander will join the Quartermaster Corps and be attached to the 10th Mountain Division in Fort Drum, NY after completing training this summer and fall.

Buffalo has its Ellicott Square building and so, at one time, did Eden. Ours was located on the southwest corner of Main and West Church Streets where the Randall Agency now stands.

The original structure on that site was a log tavern built by Revolutionary War veteran, Dr. William Hill. Dr. Hill’s son, John Hill, owned a very large tract of land that he first called Hill’s Corners and then Eden Center. Dr. Hill had served as a surgeon in the Revolution and he was also a Methodist “exhorter.” When he arrived in Eden in 1814, he decided he was too old for either of those vocations and decided to open a tavern.

Colonel Asa Warren bought Hill’s tavern about 1822 and ran it until he had a change of heart about drinking and sold the building to James Green. Subsequent owner Homer Redfield, who owned the property at two different times, extensively remodeled the building and it rose to be the three story building seen in the photograph.

In 1862, Asa Warrens’ daughter, Emeline, opened a “Select School for Girls” on the third floor with 40 to 60 pupils in attendance. Though describe as a girl’s school, early records show that in the beginning some of the students were boys. The space had a rostrum or raised platform all around the large room with recitation seats. Quite likely, this space was used also used for public meetings and other gatherings. Miss Warren was a graduate of Oberlin College in Ohio, something quite unusual for a woman of that era. Though she suffered from poor physical health since childhood, she spent an active life studying, teaching and practicing philanthropy.

During its near century in existence, the Redfield Building, as it came to be called, was home to many varied enterprises. The tavern continued to operate and a license to keep an inn was issued in 1844. Mr. Redfield, a lawyer, established his practice there as did two dentists and a barber. The building also housed the Town Clerk’s office and the place where people voted.

In the basement, at various times, were a bakery, meat market and shoe repair shop. A town pump and a watering trough for horses were located in front of the building.

In 1919, Martin Stinson who was a mail carrier for the Post Office, bought the building and renamed it Ellicott Square. Just a few years later, the large structure which had served as such a hub of activity was sold and torn down to make way for the new Bank of Eden building.

During demolition of the building, most of the old town records and documents were being discarded. Fortunately, Clyde Horton realized what was happening and did his best to rescue what he could. Thank you!!

The woman in the foreground is thought to be Irene Priess, wife of Eden’s long time and much admired physician, Dr. Grover L. Priess.

TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that voting on the budget and other propositions will consist of voting on the following propositions, as well as other such matters as may be lawfully presented at the meeting: PROPOSITION NO. 1 Shall the following resolution be adopted, to wit: RESOLVED, that the budget for the Evans-Brant (Lake Shore) Central School District for the fiscal year commencing

July 1, 2020, and ending June 30, 2021, as presented by the Board of Education is hereby approved and adopted and the required funds therefore are hereby appropriated and the necessary real property taxes required shall be raised by a tax on the taxable property in the District to be levied and collected as required by law. Adoption of this budget requires a tax levy increase of 1.43% which does not exceed the statutory tax levy increase limit of 1.43%.

PROPOSITION NO. 2 Shall the following resolution be adopted, to wit: RESOLVED, that the Board of Education of the Evans-Brant (Lake Shore) Central School District (the “District) is hereby authorized to purchase the following replacement vehicles for use by the District in the transportation of students and general use by the District: three (3) full size diesel-powered 71-passenger school buses at an estimated maximum cost of $126,322.95 each; one (1) 30-passenger gasoline-powered school bus at an estimated cost of $66,484.49; and one (1) 24-passenger 5-wheel chair position gasoline-powered wheel chair school bus at an estimated cost of $74,986.13; for a total aggregate maximum cost of $520,439.47; with such aggregate cost to be raised by a tax upon the taxable property of the District to be levied and collected in annual installments as provided in Section 416 of the Education Law, with such tax to be partially offset by State aid available therefore, and, in anticipation of such tax, by the issuance of debt obligations of the District as may be necessary, not to exceed such maximum aggregate cost.

No tax levy increase is anticipated for Proposition No. 2.

TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that military voters who are qualified voters of the school district may apply for a military ballot. Applications for military ballots may be obtained from the District Clerk’s Office and the military voter may designate a preference to receive the application by mail, fax or email. Completed applications for military ballots must be received by the District Clerk or her designee by no later than 5:00 p.m. on May 14, 2020.

TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that a list of all persons to whom absentee voter ballots are issued will be available for public inspection between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. in the office of the District Clerk on the five days prior to the annual meeting and election, except Sundays. Legislators Encourage Using New ‘Erie Grown’ Website To Connect Public With Locally Grown Farm Products Erie County Legislators Joe Lorigo, John Mills, Ed Rath, and Frank Todaro are encouraging the public to support local farmers by using the County’s new Erie Grown website.

Erie Grown includes a farm locator map and fresh produce finder to help customers identify farm stands and other sites to purchase locally made farm products. The website also features other resources to help agricultural businesses navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.

Legislator Lorigo said, “Farming is one of the many industries suffering because of the COVID-19 outbreak. I always encourage Erie County residents to support local farms, but right now it is especially important. There are a number of these locations throughout my legislative district and all of Erie County to choose from. This new website is a great feature to help many of these agricultural businesses in need of our support.”

Legislator Mills said, “Erie County is home to hundreds of family-owned farms that work hard to put food on our tables. One way we can help our farmers is by purchasing locally produced goods. When you decide to shop local, you support small farms and businesses while giving a boost to our economy. This is something we should all consider during these challenging times.

Erie Grown makes that easier by identifying places to buy fresh produce and a number of other great, locally-made goods. I also encourage residents to check out southtownsfarmtrail.org for additional resources promoting agritourism in the Southtowns.”
