Despite the restrictions put in place due to COVID-19, the North Collins Emergency Squad still had an Officer change April 1, 2020. Janice Catalano stepped down as Director of Operations, a position she held for 10 years. Following the social distancing rules, Catalano turned over the “Director’s Keys” to Tracy Matteson, the newly elected Director of Operations (EMS 9).

Director of Ops (EMS 9-1); Renee Dunkle, President; Dorothy Judson, VP; and Dee Moppert, Secretary. Catalano stated that it was a bitter sweet moment for her, but looks forward to continuing on as an AEMT, and working with the new Officers.

This year’s recognition dinner would have also commemorated the Agency’s 50th Anniversary. This event is something the members were sad had to be cancelled. The Agency has seen many changes and growth over the past 50 years and continue to prepare for what is to come in the future. When asked what was the most memorable for her, Catalano responded that there’s a lot of laughs & tears, but it’s the comradery among the EMS community (both within their own EMS agency, and with other EMS providers) that keeps you going. It’s the sense of being part of the EMS family. ________

North Collins Goes "Bald for Bucks!"

The North Collins Central School District has a long history of participation with Bald for Bucks, an annual fundraiser that sees people across the area shave or cut their long hair in order to raise awareness and funds for Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and schools closed for the remainder of the school year, some worried that the Bald for Bucks event, which had been scheduled for late March, would suffer too.

After some scrambling, the organizers worked out a plan to continue our tradition and honor each participant while remaining socially distant and safe from viral spread. Elementary School teacher Mrs. Margie Dintino and High School Guidance Counselor Mrs. Amy Ward got help from longtime Bald for Bucks supporter Anthony Black, otherwise known as DJ Anthony, from Kiss 98.5.

On Monday, May 4, dozens of cars assembled in the parking lot of the North Collins Elementary School, where DJ Anthony was already working the crowd.

One by one, the cars – many of which were decorated with signs, streamers and balloons – exited the parking lot and headed toward founder Tony George’s house. Once there, they surprised him by honking, cheering and waving. He joined the parade, which circled back to the Elementary School where a fence had been adorned with posters celebrating each participant.

When all was said and done, one thing remained apparent: the North Collins community always rises to the challenge to help others, raising well over $15,000 for Roswell Park even during the midst of a global pandemic. Top fundraiser Lina Miller lead the way, with over $1,200 in donations! We are humbled and grateful for everyone’s support!

Cultivating Eden

Despite the challenges of the Coronavirus, members of the Eden Garden Study Club (EGSC) remain stead fast caring for the plants that will soon line Main Street in Eden, and East Eden. In late February, EGSC members met at Eden Jr./ Sr. High School greenhouse, and planted a variety of over 600 flower plugs in 4” pots, which have been watered and maintained every day by club members. Last Thursday, EGSC members transplanted the flowers from the 4” pots to large curbside containers which will make their debut in June at two locations; Main Street in Eden and E. Eden Road in East Eden. The maintenance and planting was designed to stay within the Covid 19 guidelines including social distancing. Keeping to a policy of one member at a time in the greenhouse, 47 large containers were planted and will continue to be maintained daily. This portion of the Cultivate Eden project was made possible through grants received from the NYS Main Street Project, the Eden Community Foundation, and in collaboration with Agle’s, Zittel ‘s and Henry ‘s markets, the Eden Chamber of Commerce and the Eden town supervisor’s office. Press Release: 57th Annual Eden Corn Festival Cancellation The Eden Corn Festival Board of Directors have made the difficult decision to officially cancel the 57th Annual Eden Corn Festival scheduled for August 6th–9th.

Much consideration was given to every aspect of the Festival. With many months of planning already into the event, it was decided that the event could not commence this year due to all the uncertainties with the current COVID-19 pandemic.

The Board felt it would be too much of a financial strain to attempt to put on the Festival and comply with all State, County, and Local “Social Distancing” requirements due to the unpredictability of the ever changing criteria associated with the pandemic. The Health and Safety of our committee members, volunteers, sponsors, employees, and patrons is of the utmost importance to the Board.

In everyone's life comes a storm sometimes. It may even become hazardous to our health and safety. But if Jesus is in the boat of life with us He can say "Peace, be still" and calm the storm.

After the storm is over comes the questions. Jesus asked them too: "Why are you so fearful?" "How is it that you have no faith?"

Great questions! What is the sense of going through storms and not learning something?

If this coronavirus storm brought out a paralyzing fear and showed you have no faith in God - then you have learned something about yourself. Jesus is still the Prince of Peace. Get to know Him. He is all powerful. You will be able to sleep with Him through the next storm. :

The Eden Teachers Association donated $500 to the Eden North Collins Food Bank. The Food Bank, which is part of Feedmore-WNY, works tirelessly to fight hunger day to day in our communities. During the coronavirus outbreak, food banks throughout Western New York have seen an increase in demand. The Eden Teachers voted unanimously to help support our local food bank at their May meeting.

EDEN – A new Superintendent has been chosen by the Eden Central School District. Jeffrey A. Sortisio will begin his threeyear contract with the district, after board approval on May 15, effective July 1. He will succeed Sandra Anzalone, who announced her retirement as District Superintendent earlier in the school year. Anzalone served as Eden Central School District Superintendent for the past seven years.

Sortisio most recently held the role as Superintendent for the Fredonia Central School District for the past three years.

“Looking back at my time in Fredonia, I am really proud of all that has been accomplished,” he said. “The community has supported fantastic things for their students, from the capital project to learning initiatives that have been administered through high-quality instructional initiatives and efforts by our leadership team.”

Sortisio’s professional career is rooted in school counseling.

After receiving his master’s degree in counselor education from Canisius College in 1996, Sortisio worked as a School Counselor for the West Seneca Central School District from 1997 to 2004. In 2007, he earned his master’s in administration from Canisius College and became Assistant Principal for West Seneca West Senior High School from 2004-2008. Sortisio served as Frontier Central High School Principal from 2008 to 2017 prior to joining Fredonia Central School District.

“I’d like to thank all stakeholders involved in the search process for being flexible, adaptable and collaborative,” Sortisio said. “Sandy Anzalone leaves an incredible legacy in the district that I’m grateful for during this time of transition. I am really looking forward to getting to know the Eden community members, students, faculty and staff and look forward to a time when we can meet face-to-face.”

Sortisio resides in Hamburg with his wife, Kim, a teacher at Dunkirk High School. They have three sons: Zachary, Ryan and Jacob.

“We are grateful for Sandy’s dedication to the district, community and students over the last seven years. We wish Sandy and her family health and happiness in her retirement,” said Jennifer Horschel, President of the Eden Central School Board of Education. “This is an exciting and bittersweet time for us. We are looking forward to the future. We appreciate the commitment of all of the stakeholders who participated in the interviews, as well as the staff who worked so hard to move this process forward during these challenging times.”

It is with great sadness that the Town of Eden is cancelling Summer Recreation Camps for the year 2020.

This includes day camps, mini camps, and swimming lessons.

Given the challenge of an undetermined opening timeline, safety requirements for both children and staff, and significant financial uncertainty, we have made the difficult decision to close.

Our seasonal employees and participating families need adequate time to make alternate plans for the summer. Other recreational programs are still being evaluated. We will continue consideration of these as we work through phases set forth for reopening.

We recognize how this may put a great burden on families who rely on Eden’s summer recreation camp as a low-cost program for their children. This decision was not made lightly. Lawtons Progressors 4 - H Club Participate In County - Wide Public Presentation Event

Over the last several months the Lawtons Progressors 4 - H Club has actively participated in the 20230 Erie County 4 H Public Presentation Program. Members have refined their public speaking skills through Illustrated Talks, Demonstrations, and Dramatic Interpretations. Speeches and Recitations were additional options youth could use as the format for their presentations. Approximately 80 percent of the club membership participated in this educational program. Scoring rubrics and evaluation forms are completed by elevators to provide feedback to participants on their performance in order to enhance the youth's learning experience.

Based on their score, the top 15 percent of Erie County participants are selected for the Western District Public Presentations.

Of these chosen, 5 were members of the Lawtons Progressors. They included Haley K., Rachel K., Jack N., William N., and Benjamin T. Due to the "stay in place" mandates associated with the coronavirus, the Western District Public Presentation event scheduled for March 28th was postponed. In order to provide members with an opportunity to participate in a district event. All 5 members chose to participate in the Virtual Western District Public Presentations conducted via Zoom. Members were once again evaluated and provided feedback through this new technology. David I. Briggs, SP4, US Army David Ivan Briggs was born on March 7, 1947. He lived with his mom, dad and twin sisters on the corner of Route 249 and Mileblock Road in the town of Brant.

He attended the North Collins Schools, graduated from college in 1967 and on December 11, 1967, David joined the US Army.

The North Collins and Brant communities hold this common bond; we lost one of our own in the Vietnam War. David I. Briggs, the son of Louise and Ivan Briggs, SP4, Army of the United States SELECTIVE SERVICE, 25th Infantry Division, Unit C Co., 4th BN, 9th INF RGT, died in combat on November 23, 1968 in Tay Ninh, South Vietnam. He was 21 years old.

During his less than 12 months of service, David had been awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Badge with machine gun bar, Sharpshooter Badge with rifle bar and the Marksman Badge with automatic rifle bar. David was posthumously awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart.

To recognize David’s sacrifice for our Nation, his family received personal condolence letters from: The President of the United States; Lyndon B. Johnson, The US Army; General W. C. Westmoreland and Department of Defense, Office of the Adjutant General, Major General US Army; Adjutant General Kenneth G. Wickman. From the Governor of the State of New York Nelson A. Rockefeller, the family received the official certificate for Conspicuous Services in David’s honor .

Sharing in this painful loss, our two communities paid tribute to David’s memory and sacrifice.

A memorial plate was placed in front of Holy Spirit Church, North Collins, which reads “Erected

by Friends in memory of SP4/C David I. Briggs. Killed in Viet Nam action November 23, 1968”.

At the former Brant Town Hall: the David I. Briggs Memorial Courtroom was dedicated on December 29, 1971 to SP/4 David I. Briggs U.S. Army 3/7/47 - 11/23/68. “...GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN HE THAT LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS”.

To David I. Briggs and to all who made the ultimate sacrifice so that we may enjoy our freedoms; we are deeply and forever indebted. Contributed by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society

TOWN OF EDEN BONUS BULK GARBAGE PICKUP Week of June 1st

This year your garbage tax included two bonus bulk garbage pickups during the week of June 1st and October 4th. During those weeks ONLY, you are allowed to place up to 10 items outside of your tote for pickup. Bulk waste and white goods will be collected separately (in a separate truck) from your household waste and recycling. Bulk pickup occurs on your service day or the day following your service day.

Guidelines to follow:

✓ Carpeting must be rolled in lengths of 4 feet or less, taped securely, and no wider than 18 inches. ✓ Large items must be of size that can easily be handled by two employees. ✓ Additional acceptable items include small furniture, bedding and mattresses (any size), hot water tanks, and large appliances. ✓ Any item, such as a weed trimmer or small lawnmower, with an engine requiring oil and gas must have those liquids removed prior to collection. ✓ Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners must have refrigerant (freon) removed by a certified technician and the unit stickered as “Freon removed” with the doors removed from refrigerators and freezers.
