Sherman Falk Flying his Airplane This interesting story was written

by Sherman Falk a few years back for our September 25, 2013 issue of “BrantFarnham History Vol. XIII Whole No. 46”.

It was included in our “Memories” section.

His story is about an emergency landing of an airplane in the town of Brant and we think you will enjoy Sherman’s well told tale. The photo does not really pertain to the story - other than the fact that is the author – Sherman Falk - in the pilot seat!

Sherman wrote: “In the early stages of World War II (1940’s) a Canadian twin engine airplane believed to be a DeHaviland was forced to make an emergency landing at the Angola Airport. The airport was located on Hardpan Road in the Township of Brant. Located at the airport was a tower with a rotating beacon which was a navigation aid to aircraft. The aircraft involved in this incident had evidently got off course and entered United States airspace.

Being at night and getting low on fuel the situation was getting quite serious when they saw the beacon. Knowing that an airport existed, they chose to make a gear up landing, not knowing the conditions on the ground.

The pilot, considering all conditions made an exceptional belly landing, with only minor damage to the aircraft’s structure and no injury to flight personnel. Of course during this type of landing the propellers of the aircraft were badly damaged. After inspection of the engines, a decision was made to replace them. This of course took considerable time to get replacement engines and equipment to complete the operation.

After the repairs were completed, the aircraft was moved to Rte. 20 on a Sunday morning.

Traffic on the highway was stopped so the aircraft could take off. I recall standing in the front yard of my parent’s home and listening to the drone of the engines, as they pre-flighted them prior to take off. Once the aircraft was airborne and climbed above the tree line, it was visible to me as it started on its journey back to its home base.

At this point, I would like to say “thanks” to Bertha Notaro for her input. She told me that one of the men on the airplane married a girl from Angola. Also Bertha assisted in defining the time and season of the event; teams were bowling at Pero’s Lanes. This places it at early evening and likely the fall season. ~ Sherman Falk ~ ” Sherman was an enthusiastic member of our historical society for a number of years. He was born on November 17, 1925 and was raised in the town of Brant. His brothers were Ernest, Augustus and Edward Falk.

The George and Almira Hammond Home, Brant, N.Y. Our historical society received an email from John Hammond of Boise, Idaho. It seems that John is the great-grandson of George Hammond. John sent us this wonderful photo of his greatgrandfather’s Brant, N.Y. home.

Along with the photo, John also included the following note: “I have a photo that may be of interest. It is of George and Almira Hammond in front of their home on Hammond Road in Brant. Also in the photo are two of their grandchildren. It is believed they are Lester Hammond’s children, Merritt and Grace.

I would guess it was taken between 1910 and 1915. I believe it [the home] is located on the east side of the section of Hammond Road between US 20 and Interstate 90. It is my understanding that Lester [Hammond] and his family lived there for a number of years before and after the death of George in 1917. Lester continued to farm the land and to my knowledge the home is still there. The last I knew the property was owned by Merritt and Marian Hammond (who are now deceased) and had been leased out. I was looking at the photo of the old homestead and I noticed something interesting. The portion of the house behind George and Almira has a porch and, if you zoom in, the wall beneath the porch appears to be made of split logs. I wonder if that portion of the house was the first house of the Benoni Hammond’s family who settled in Brant between 1830 – 1840? Benoni was George Hammond’s grandfather. Oh well, we’ll never know.”

In another email John elaborated further on the Hammond family genealogy; one of George’s sons John L. Hammond, had a son by the name of Ivan. Ivan attended the Mud Street school also known as #6 and then #4 school. This school was located on the corner of Hammond Road and Mud Street (Brant-Farnham Road). Remember, at that time, the N.Y.S. Thruway did not divide Hammond Road. Ivan Hammond had a son named John and it is this John Hammond that sent us the photo. George’s brother was William Wallace Hammond. The Hammond family can boast of descendants that arrived on the Mayflower. It appears that Hammond Road, which once extended the width of the town of Brant from Milestrip Road to Cain Road, was named for this early town of Brant family. Hammond Road was divided in two by the N.Y.S. Thruway during the 1950’s.

The eastern corners of Main and Church Streets looked very differently in the early 1900s.

It is possible to date this photo to 1904 or 1905. Telephone poles, which were installed for the first time during the winter of 1903-1904, stand high above the other structures.

Electric line did not come through Eden until shortly before World War I. The two-story structure on the right was a store that was owned at the time of the photo by Benjamin Watson. It was originally owned and built by Lyman Pratt. Pratt started his business in the 1830s, though the building shown was built sometime later, probably in the 1850s or 1860s. Almost unlimited credit was extended to customers and barter was a popular method of commerce. Mr. Pratt also kept the post office and ran a potash factory which produced lye. By 1880, Pratt’s son-in-law Harrison Parker had taken charge of the business. The Pratt home (some older residents might call it the Parmelee house) was located behind the store along East Church Street. In 1905, the store building burned leaving a vacant lot until 1965 when Marine-Midland Bank (now Key Bank) built the present structure. The Pratt/Parmelee home was razed at that time to accommodate the bank building and drive through.

The building to the left with the awning was another store belonging to William Hauth. According to Doris Anderson’s history, the store served many purposes over its lifetime. In addition to at one time being a home, it also was a meeting place for religious groups, a millinery shop, a cigar factory, a harness shop, a grocery and candy store and the offices of Bartoo & Babcock. The Hauth’s home was located in what is now the parking lot of the Four Corners Café. They were known to be rather cranky folks and were often the target of neighborhood boys who were fond of running, stick in hand, along the Hauth’s picket fence. According to some sources, the home was moved to 2738 Hemlock Road and the store building was moved and attached to the Shaw House on Main Street next to the bank.

At one time, the empty space created by moving Hauth’s store was home to another business before the Four Corners was built--------more on that next time!

The young man in the photo is Arthur Smith, Sr. who was about 17 years old at the time. He graduated from Eden High School in 1903 and then studied electronics at Bryant& Stratton Business institute. He enlisted in the Army during World War I, serving in France and England from 1917-1919.

Mr. Smith lived his entire life on his farm on Paxon Road and was a charter member of the Newel-Faulkner American Legion Post 880. In addition to farming, he also was a rural mail carrier for twenty years. In his obituary notice, Mr. Smith was remembered for his sharp memory and knowledge of Eden’s history. His son Arthur B. Smith, Jr. also lived in Eden for his entire life. He passed away in January of 2019 at the age of 96.

PROPOSITION NO. 2 Shall the following resolution be adopted, to wit: RESOLVED, that the Board of Education of the Evans-Brant (Lake Shore) Central School District (the “District) is hereby authorized to purchase the following replacement vehicles for use by the District in the transportation of students and general use by the District: three (3) full size diesel-powered 71-passenger school buses at an estimated maximum cost of $126,322.95 each; one (1) 30-passenger gasoline-powered school bus at an estimated cost of $66,484.49; and one (1) 24passenger 5-wheel chair position gasoline-powered wheel chair school bus at an estimated cost of $74,986.13; for a total aggregate maximum cost of $520,439.47; with such aggregate cost to be raised by a tax upon the taxable property of the District to be levied and collected in annual installments as provided in Section 416 of the Education Law, with such tax to be partially offset by State aid available therefore, and, in anticipation of such tax, by the issuance of debt obligations of the District as may be necessary, not to exceed such maximum aggregate cost.

No tax levy increase is anticipated for Proposition No. 2.

TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that applications for absentee ballots may be obtained Monday through Friday, except holidays, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. in the District Clerk’s Office located at 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York. Completed applications must be received by the District Clerk or her designee at least seven (7) days before the annual meeting and election (May 12, 2020) if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter or by the day before the election (May 18, 2020) if the ballot is to be issued to the voter in person. Health And Mental Wellness For Caregivers Of The Elderly During Covid-19

Elderly caregivers play a vital role in the community and in individuals’ lives. Amidst the angst and uncertainty of the COVID-19 epidemic, their jobs are even more essential and likely more stressful. Follow some of these simple tips to make things easier on yourself and your patient.

Social connection and meaningful communication: · The at-risk elderly have been told to isolate as much as possible. Prioritize finding ways for them to connect with their children and grandchildren so as to avoid extreme loneliness.

Provide technological assistance and create a support system around the elderly individual so they feel connected.

Staying active: Encourage the individual to be both physically and mentally active. Engage them in regular physical exercise and find mentally stimulating activities to do regularly.

Discover ways for the elderly to be helpful to others. A sense of purpose and meaning is a great remedy for anxiety and isolation.

Do not forget about your own self-care! Be compassionate toward yourself. Take breaks when you need them and rotate responsibilities with others while practicing your own positive mental health strategies.

Offer to do things for the elderly that will be mutually beneficial. Take their dog for a walk. Read a book or magazine with them. Try doing a puzzle or simple craft project.

Thomas Alguire of Angola Prepares for the Peak Death Race

One of the greatest endurance athletes of our area Thomas Alguire of Angola, NY, is attempting the Peak Death Race for the 3rd time this year. The Death Race is a brutal challenge and one of the most physically and mentally demanding races in the world. The Death Race takes place in the the Green Mountains in Pittsfield, Vermont.

Alguire completed this race last year- after a grueling 70 hours and one of the few to finish in 2019. He has pushed himself farther than most normal people would go. Having started with just running 5k's only 5 years ago, he has done some of the most difficult obstacle course races, including the Spartan Ultra(and Cryfecta), Bonefrog Endurance and OCR Worlds.

In 2019, Alguire has completed some of the toughest endurance events around. With the Beast of Burden 100 mile running event along the Erie Canal, he finished it twice to earn his double buckle. GORUCK has multiple events that test your strength and willpower to push forward. One of the most difficult, GORUCK HTL, which combines 3 events in one weekend with only a few hours between each. The Heavy starts as a 24 hour, team building event, with a weighted backpack known as a Ruck. The Tough comes next as a 12 hour event, followed by the 6 hour Light. Those who successfully complete an HTL are in the pantheon of the most elite endurance athletes in the world.

Alguire's motto is push beyond your limits, challenge yourself to things that scare you.
