The Results of the Brant-Farnham 181st Anniversary Contest The Brant-Farnham Historical Society bulletin board outside the historical room, Brant Town Hall, Brant, NY The results are in! A contest consisting of fifteen questions regarding the history of the Town of Brant and Village of Farnham was listed in the local Pennysavers to help celebrate the 181st Anniversary of the town of Brant. The original date of incorporation was March 25, 1839. The contest rules were set as follows: “One submission per person.

All questions pertain to the history of the Town of Brant, N.Y. Answers 1-15 may be dates, numbers or more than one word in length.

Submitted entries with ALL 15 answers correct have opportunity for TWO drawn winners to win a $50.00 Amazon gift card. ALL submitted entries have opportunity for THREE drawn winners to win one $25.00 Amazon gift card each. SIX drawn winners will win $1.00 each. ELEVEN different winners in total. Prizes total $181.00.”

Entries from as far away as Fredonia, Hamburg, North Collins, Lakeview, Angola and Silver Creek were received during the two week period. The enthusiasm for local history was certainly encouraging! Unfortunately, none of the entries submitted had all 15 questions correct, so the “ultimate” prizes of (2) $50.00 Amazon gift cards (total value $100.00) could not be drawn at this time. Nonetheless, each of the submitted entries had the opportunity to win the remaining prizes (total value of $81.00) no matter how many answers were correct or incorrect. The NINE drawn winners are: $25.00 Amazon Gift card with 1 to each of THREE winners; Judy Driscoll, Katelynn Beavers and Pauline Masters. There were SIX $1.00 monetary prizes issued to: Ashley Price, Robert Giannicchi, Kayla Friend, Sandra Heusinger, Katie Davis and Arlene Miller. An independent person drew each of the winner’s names.

Anthony L. Chiarilli, 84, of Eden, New York died Sunday, April 12, 2020. Born in Bradford, PA in 1935, he attended the Bradford school system and graduated in 1953.

He later attended Mansfield State Teachers College (now Mansfield University) from 1952 to 1955 and then again from 1957 to 1959, earning a Bachelor of Science in English Education, with minors in history and music. From 1954 to 1957 Mr. Chiarilli served in the U.S. Navy on the battleship USS WISCONSIN (BB64) as Executive Officer’s yeoman, visiting many countries. Mr. Chiarilli served as English Department Chairman at Pontiac Northern High School, Pontiac, MI from 1960 to 1969.

During those years he received an M.A. in English from Oakland University in Rochester, MI and also attended Michigan State and the University of Michigan.

From 1969 to 1997 Mr. Chiarilli taught high school English at Eden Senior High School. For most of those years he served as the English Department Chairman. He also directed high school musicals and plays.

As a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Mr. Chiarilli was instrumental in producing and directing the first church musical, “The Witness,” which had a popular run of more than twenty-five years.

He was also the director of The Witness Choir and served as a Lector. Mr. Chiarilli was active for more than ten years in the prison ministry of Kairos at Collins Correctional Facility, an organization whose goal is to encourage inmates to seek a better life offered through the gospel. In 1987, Mr. Chiarilli began to write poems, many of which were accepted and published by university presses, anthologies, and newspapers.

He married the former Margaret Ann Kizer of Canton, OH, in 1965. She passed away in 2008 and is remembered by many Eden residents for her cheerful disposition and willingness to do volunteer work. She was active in promoting the Eden Library. Majoring in French, she had attended East Stoudsburg State Teachers College. She then taught briefly when the couple lived in Michigan. Mr.

Chiarilli is survived by three children: Jane Newton of Edgewater, MD; Carl Chiarilli of Hamburg, NY, and Dr. Daniel Chiarilli of NYC. Also survived by two grandchildren; Alexander and Mark Newton, one brother, Richard Chiarilli of Amherst, NY, and various nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at a later date. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery next to his beloved wife of more than forty-three years. Memorials in Mr. Chiarilli’s name may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Howard A. Purdy of Lawtons, NY, passed away at Mercy Hospital in S. Buffalo, NY at age 89. He was the son of Walter A. Purdy and Louise M. (Gerber) and was born in Hamburg on May 8, 1930. He is survived by his loving wife of Marilyn R. (Schwartz) of Hamburg, NY married in 1965.

He is also survived by his sons.

Christopher ( Mindy) and Michael Purdy.

Grandfather of Beau, Gabriel, Lucita and Ritarose.

Howard was passionate about auto racing and found success building and racing supermodifieds from the late 1950’sto the early 1970’s. he raced in Canada at the Canadian National Exhibition and in several tracks in USA including Lancaster, Oswego and Pocono. The well known “Little Deuce” had many successful years with drivers including Bentley Warren and Ron Lux. His pit crew included long time friends Robert Hodgson, Sonny Wilkinson, Fritz Klein and Jerry Sullivan.

He founded Purdy Ford of Gowanda, NY in 1967 and owned and operated it until 2000. This was one of the greatest joys of his life and he had great appreciation for many loyal employees who made this possible. His other business interests included Lakeshore Ford of Fredonia and Campland RV in N. Collins. Later in life he turned most of his time and attention to his family and his farm, including his angus Cattle and quarter horses.

Curtis V. Hodge of Hamburg, NY, passed away April 13, 2020. Helen M. Nuessle, age 99, of North Boston, New York died Thursday, April 9, 2020. She was born on June 8, 1920 in Buffalo, New York. She was a daughter of the late Edwin and Louise Nuessle. Bernice Kathryn Braymiller Doyle, (nee Brusehaber) 93, of Eden, NY, passed away peacefully on April 15th, 2020 at her daughter’s home in Springville, NY surrounded by her loving children and Ruth. Bernie was born in Eden, NY to Oscar and Louise Brusehaber on January 7, 1927. She went to high school at Eden Central School and graduated in 1945. She married her high school sweetheart Bob Braymiller in 1948. They lived on a large dairy and quarter horse farm in Lawtons, NY where she raised their children. After the death of her husband and eldest son, John, she was an exceptional parent to her children still at home - driving a horse trailer all over the northeast, attending every basketball and soccer game, cooking, cleaning, canning, and caring for them. She learned to ski and went on to earn an Associate’s degree as an Occupational Therapy Assistant from ECC in her 50s. She enjoyed many artistic hobbies, including basket weaving, sewing, knitting, and drawing, and was an incredible baker. Bernie is survived by her children, Nancy Braymiller (Ernie Ward) of Granby, MA, Carol Brucato (James) of Springville, NY, Jay Braymiller (Margaret) of Boston, NY, Daniel (Digger) Braymiller (Kristin) of Boulder, CO. She is also survived by her sisters Rita Francisco of Arcade, NY and Marjory Witte of Eden, NY, grandchildren Derek Sampson, Leah Braymiller, Sarah Lucia Brucato, Molly Braymiller, Jack Braymiller, Lucy Braymiller, and Anna Braymiller, great grandchildren Xander and Xava Manell and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husbands Robert J. Braymiller and Brent Doyle, and children John Robert Braymiller and David John Braymiller and siblings Dorothy Kracht, Alta Arlen, Jean Muck, and Richard Brusehaber. Burial will be at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Eden NY. Hospice Buffalo was an incredible and caring resource during her last months.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice in Bernie’s name, 225 Como Park Boulevard, Cheektowaga, NY 14227-1480.

Because of COVID-19 travel restrictions, we will be celebrating Bernie’s life at a private memorial service later this year. Laing Funeral Home will be handling the funeral arrangements. Words of sympathy may be left on www.

We are all grappling with our changed lives, with new realities and ways of interacting.
