Dear Eden Families,

April 8, 2020

It seems hard to believe that it has only been four weeks since our students were with us in our classrooms. I consistently hear from our teachers and support staff how much they miss the daily interaction with your children. In addition, I actually had a few students tell me last week that they are tired of the “snow days”. All joking aside, these are unprecedented times, and the Board of Education and I hope that this letter finds you and your loved ones safe and healthy.

I have no words for the grief and sadness that COVID-19 is bringing to families.

For some, it is the isolation from or the loss of loved ones; for others, it is the lack of certainty of what each day will bring. For our children, socializing is everything. There is sadness and grief in the loss of the Elementary Musical, All County competitions, spring sports, 2nd grade musical, concerts, proms and field trips. There is uncertainty in how to roll out award ceremonies and graduation. There is uncertainty in whether we will even come back to our classrooms by June. All of “school” is important for our children, and their sadness is sincere, as it should be.

As a school district, we are abiding by the governor’s latest executive order, which has closed schools until April 29 and eliminated Spring Break. Regents exams are cancelled and the guidance, which accompanies this decision, affects K-12 and how we move forward for the next few months. Please be patient with us as we sort this out.

Beginning April 15th, our school buses will deliver meals to our students’ homes, and instructional packets to those students who do not have internet capability. When you see a school bus go by, please wave or honk. It is so important to recognize our most essential employees who are working throughout this health crisis.

Our teachers have been able to use a variety of resources for continual learning.

Many have set up “classrooms” in their dining rooms, on their own personal devices, next to their children who also have work to do for school. Internet access continues to challenge many of us. We are getting better at this and are working hard to develop routines to make it easier for our parents and students. Thank you, to all of you who have reached out to us with suggestions. We continue to exercise caution to ensure privacy and confidentiality. Please know that every decision we make is in the best interest of our students. Overall, we all agree that we would much rather be back at school. We miss our students.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher, your building principal, your child’s counselor, or me. We are monitoring our phones and our email. As we receive more guidance from NYS, I promise to share this information with you.

Road Work on Commercial Street, Angola, N.Y. circa 1910

With all the work in process on Main Street in the Village of Angola, we thought a photo of a typical road work crew from 1910 would be fun as a comparison. This photo was shared with us by Fred Carstens of Evans. The information received with the photo was “Laying the brick road with horses. Work began around 1910 - 1911, finishing in 1912�. The men and horses are working in the Angola Village on the section of Commercial Street closest to Main Street.

Found within the centennial book “The History of Angola from 1873 to 1973� authored by Mrs. Joan Houston, we also discovered the following reference to the brick road work: “ 1910’s - Major improvements came in this decade. An election in 1910 authorized the Village to establish a water system at a cost not to exceed $55,000. In 1911 the foundation for the 100foot tall, 18-foot diameter stand pipe was completed. Residents were pleased to learn that after the water mains had been laid a new 16-foot brick paved street would follow. Finished in 1912, it extended along Commercial Street and over Main Street toward Evans Center.�

John was a member of the NYS Police, Organized Crime Task Force and enjoyed a long retirement.

An Army veteran and career public servant, he always put others before himself, guided, protected, encouraged and helped his family and others he encountered no matter how dire or unpleasant the circumstances. Family was his passion and joy, he has left them an excellent example of true servant leadership guided by empathy, kindness and love. A celebration of John’s life will be held privately.

Why do they even ask?

Instead, I end up with a chocolate bunny.

It seems like every Easter, the results end up the same.

I search the straw in my basket, but it ends up being lame.

I decided on a plan, to give this item high praise.

I wanted something alive that I could nurture and raise.

I little yellow chick, so adorable and cute.

If I begged and pleaded, there’s no way they would dispute.

I spent a lot of time showing how much better this would be.

It seemed like they paid attention to how much happiness it would bring me.

Anticipation was building as we grew closer to the day.
