From the Supervisor: The Town of Eden is currently under a State of Emergency. This status allows our local government to give emergency orders as needed. The Eden Town Hall will be closed to the public until further notice. Anyone needing to conduct business at the Town Hall can do so by appointment only from 10:00am – 2:00pm everyday with the exception of Wednesdays which will be from 10:00am to 12:00pm. To make an appointment, call the Town Hall at 716-992-3408. The Eden Town Court is also closed until further notice.

All restaurants and bars are closed for sit down dining but many are open to serve by take-out or delivery only. We encourage all of our residents to continue to support our businesses as best they can.

Eden School District has informed us that the school property is closed. This includes all playgrounds and recreation areas.

Henry G Kuenze at 90 years of age with his daughter Mrs. Martha Stuhring. The Commercial Street home and shoe store of Henry G. Kuenze also served as the Farnham Post Office - 1899

Henry G. Kuenze was a shoemaker and the owner of the first shoe store in Farnham, N.Y. His home which also included his store, was located on Commercial Street. The building remains as a private residence today. The Kuenze shoe store doubled as the Farnham Post Office during Henry’s tenure as postmaster which began on October 15, 1899 and extended through January of 1915.

The 1895 BUSINESS DIRECTORY OF FARNHAM included the following advertisement: “H. G. KUENZE, Dealer in boots, shoes and rubbers. Custom work and repairing neatly and promptly done. Robert (Bob) Leslie Liljequist, age 78, of Eden, New York passed away Friday March 13, 2020 in Rochester, New York.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Carolyn (nee Lang); daughters, Karen and Kim (Cornell Womack); grandchildren, Evan (Marissa), Hanna and Peter. Bob was born in 1941 in Honesdale, PA, the son of the late Leslie and Anna (nee Helferich) Liljequist. He graduated from SUNY Oneonta in 1963 and earned his Masters degree in Education from Hofstra University in 1966. A career public school teacher and administrator, he served in the Connetquot School District on Long Island for 34 years.

Bob had a passion for educating future generations.

Upon retirement, he enthusiastically shared his experience and expertise in teaching hunter safety courses. He was a founding member of the Boys & Girls Club of Eden where he enjoyed serving on the Board of Directors. Bob was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Eden, New York where he contributed his gifts through membership on the Church Board and through his love and participation in the church choir. Bob was a warm and generous man with a love of country music, cribbage and baseball. His sense of humor, compassion and generosity will be remembered by anyone who was fortunate to know him. A private memorial service was held. Contributions in Bob’s memory can be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and/or the Eden-North Collins Food Pantry. Eleanor Mae Avery

Eleanor Mae Avery (nee Burns) of Langford, NY, and Machias, NY passed away March 15, 2020, at the age of 92, after a sudden decline in health.

Predeceased by her husband, Norman Avery. Survived by children: Jean Avery and Alan Avery of Langford, NY; Alice Ayers of North Collins, NY; and Jan Fisher of Machias, NY. Also survived by grandchildren: Keith, Matt, Jessi, Ryan, Sean, Aron, and Brittany and step grandchildren: Dan, Natalie, and James.

Additionally survived by several great­ grandchildren and step greatgrandchildren. Predeceased by all three of her siblings and their spouses: Lawrence (Ramona) Burns, Lillian (Ray) Wittmeyer, and Milton (Mildred) Burns.

Friends called at the Wentland Funeral Home 10634 Main St. (RT62) North Collins, NY; where funeral services also took place. Eleanor spent her formative years on a family farm near Morton’s Corners, NY, and was a 1944 graduate of Springville Griffith Institute. In 1949 Eleanor married Norman Avery of Langford, NY, where she resided for the next 70 years. Eleanor spent her final months at her daughter’s home in Machias, NY. For many years, Eleanor helped her husband raise chickens and rabbits.

They also maintained a large vegetable garden. Eleanor was interested in square dancing, playing cards, traveling, reading, quilting, growing flowers, going to restaurants, and watching TV game shows.

She leaves behind a legacy of being an accomplished cook and is especially known for baking delicious pies and cakes.
