Eden Central School District is excited to welcome another new face to the administrative team. Mrs. Merrie Maxon will begin her position as Director of Pupil Personnel Services on March 2nd.

Shawn Johnson will be retiring March 16, 2020 after serving as the Director of Pupil Personnel Services for the past 14 years. "Merrie comes to Eden with all the right skill sets and experiences to take on this challenging role", stated Superintendent Anzalone.

Merrie holds a BS degree in Elementary and Special Education, and a Master's in Educational Leadership from St. Bonaventure University, as well as a Master's in Early Reading and Literacy from Walden University. She began her career as an English and Job Readiness teacher in 2002 at Great Valley Residential Center, and then moved on to Salamanca where she taught Special and General Education until 2015. Most recently, she was an Assistant Principal at Union Pleasant in Hamburg, and an Elementary Principal in the Silver Creek School District.

When asked, "Why Eden?", Merrie responded, "I am looking forward to the opportunities to sustain partnerships with families and advocate for students. I wholeheartedly believe that one must be the difference to make a difference."

Merrie resides in Evans with her husband and four of five children. Her oldest child and grandchild live in California.

Marion and Margaret Pheasant Celebrate 75th Anniversary

The children of Marion and Margaret Pheasant of Eden, NY are happy to announce the 75th wedding anniversary of their parents. They were married on February 11, 1945 in Martinsburg, PA, where they grew up. They moved to Eden in 1952 when he began working at the Ford Motor Company.

They have been active members of the First Baptist Church of Eden since moving to NY. They are the parents of 6 children, 13 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and 5 great-greatgrandchildren. Family and friends will gather to celebrate their special anniversary.

Zonta Remembers Past Members

The Zonta Club of Hamburg-Orchard Park made a donation to the Hamburg Library in honor of two members who recently passed away. Jennie Altes was an active member for over thirty years. Jennie passed away last year at the age of 101. She held several offices in the Club and served as Branch Manager for what became Key Bank. She also volunteered with the Red Cross and St. James United Church of Christ. Gail Sutton was an active member for the past eight years, working on projects to raise awareness of domestic violence. She was an avid gardener and a member of two book clubs. Both ladies loved to travel. Plaques were hung in the foyer of the library and a donation was made to purchase books in their memory. Members of Zonta Club of Hamburg-Orchard Park joined Brian Hoth at the library for the presentation. The search was now on for one with a creamy taste.

Shirley A. Wagenblatt of Gowanda was born on February 13, 1929 in East Eden, NY at the home of her grandparents. For the past year of her life, she was a resident of the Gowanda Rehabilitation and Nursing Center before peacefully passing away at the age of 90. Shirley graduated from Eden High School and was very involved in the music department.

Later in life, her love of music afforded her the ability to memorize and perform over 100 songs on the keyboard to entertain friends and family.

After graduation, she married Robert H. Wagenblatt while working at the Hamburg telephone office and shortly afterward, transferred to the Gowanda branch. In the mid 70’s she began working at Tri-County Hospital as a switchboard operator and later in the admissions office as an admissions clerk.She was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years and by her parents, Ralph and Margaret (Haag) Mertle. She is survived by three daughters; Lynn (Donald) Offhaus, Beth Rogers and Lisa (Clifton) Wheeler all of Gowanda, four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Richard (Marcella) Mertle. A sister, Joan (Tom) Abbott of Hamburg survives, as well as two brothers, Robert (Mary) Mertle and Ralph (Wende) Mertle, both of Langford.

Memorials may be made to the Gowanda Volunteer Fire Department, the Gowanda Ambulance Service, or the Eden High School Music and Arts boosters.
