Eden Youth Activity Night

The Eden Recreation Department and Eden Middle School partnered together for Youth Activity Night on Friday, Oct. 18th. The event was for students in grades 6 - 8 with activities for everyone.

The ETA, Eden Teachers Association, sponsored candy bar bingo, gyms were open for a variety of games including basketball and dodgeball, and the pool was available for swimming and water polo.

Members of the Eden High School National Honor Society and others volunteered to assist with gym games, ran the concession stand and helped with set up and clean up duties.The event was a huge success. _______

Southtowns Catholic School Arcade Academy

Students in Grades 1, 2 & 3 joined Mrs. Ebert in creating Pizza Box games during Arcade Academy. The kids had to make the games out of pizza boxes and recycled materials.

Elle Noecker Places in State Championships

Elle Noecker, 8th grader, traveled to Ithaca to compete in the NYS Federation 2019 Girls Swimming State Championships. She qualified for states in 4 events (200 IM, 100 butterly, 100 backstroke, and 100 breastroke) and had the rare opportunity to choose which 2 she wanted to compete in. The preliminary meet was Friday morning. In the 100 butterfly, Elle placed 32 out of 89 competitors and in the 100 breaststroke she placed 31 out of 49 competitors. Elle was one middle school swimmer among 13-15 others in the STATE to qualify. Hundreds of swimmers attend this meet and 163 teams were represented. To say that Elle had a successful season is an understatement. In Section 6 she is ranked top 5 in five events, has broken 5 school records, and pool records at Maryvale and Springville.

She was recognized in the first week of the dual meet season by the Buffalo News and received the Athlete of the Week award. Furthermore, on October 2nd she was recognized by the NYS Public High School Athletic Association for the Milk Moves of the Week for breaking, at that time, two school records. At the final championship meet she was interviewed by the Buffalo News at the State Qualifier and had an excerpt in the sports section of the paper. Her time and dedication to her sport has awarded her several deserving accolades in one short varsity season. Elle's family, relatives, teammates, and coaches are grateful for the community support received within the past week. Elle's season is not over.

She will continue swimming with her club team, TWST, and will be training to attending a National Swim meet held in Florida in the spring.

NORTH COLLINS, New York – On Thursday, November 14, 2019, BestSelf Behavioral Health held an official ribbon-cutting ceremony and grand opening of its newly renovated and expanded clinic in North Collins. President and CEO, Howard Hitzel and the Mayor of North Collins, Mayor Vincent George. In 2013, North Collins had a small satellite mental health outpatient clinic which served 46 clients and as of November 2019 the clinic serves over 450 clients. The Personalized Recovery Oriented Services (PROS) program has also continued to add new and innovative services to their schedule over the years. The expansion at North Collins was twofold during the last five years, including identifying the need for additional substance abuse services in the south towns and adding services for children and adolescents. In addition to increasing the number of clients it serves, the North Collins clinic has created new local jobs and now employs 20 people. The team at North Collins has shown their commitment to the community by decreasing the stigma of mental health and substance use disorders for years and offering support to those in need. Many staff are trained in various evidence based therapies including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Seeking Safety, Cognitive Enhancement Therapy (CET) and Living in Balance. The Eder Motorsports Pulling Team started to 2019 NTPA season by competing with both the Polar Air Unlimited and Mini Modified Tractors at the Ahoy Arena in Rotterdam, Netherlands in March. Ahoy is the largest indoor pull in Europe and the American Team was a huge favorite of the fans. Joe and his Crew were accompanied by his sponsor Matt Cain of Polar Air, family and friends who all had a great time. After the trip abroad the Tractors were readied for the NTPA Grand National Circuit which kicked off in Benson ,NC in May. The GN series took the team over 15,000 miles to events in WI, MN, TN, OH, IA and NY (Langford NE Nationals - 1 Mile from Eder’s Shop). Joe and his Crew captured 9 1st Place finishes and lead in points most of the season. Joe still holds the record of 21 consecutive wins and set the record in 2019 for the longest pull ever at the NTPA Enderle Pull off in Urbana, OH with a distance of 395.885 feet. Joe Eder’s 2019 GN Unlimited Modified Point Title is his 6th National Championship of his 32 pulling career He also finished 2nd in the GN Mini-Modified division which is a feat considering the schedules of pulling 2 divisions simultaneously. This would have not been possible with the help of Joe’s amazing crew, sponsors: Polar Air, Native Pride, Cenpeco Oil, Fluid Power, Buffalo Turbine, his family, friends and all the great Fans. Joe and his team will be accepting his Championship at the NTPA Award Program on December 7th in Columbus, OH. They are already preparing for the 2020 Pulling Season. Today’s photo is printed from a glass plate negative and is one of many photos donated to the historical society

by Jeanne Treat. Lynn E. Walters of Brant, N.Y. was the photographer. We are not sure what caused the actual mishap to this automobile, however, it is interesting to see this captured moment of an earlier time in the village of Farnham, N.Y. If we traveled the road under the train viaduct we would be headed towards Route 20 and Brant Center.

Looking closely at the left hand side of the photo, behind the train, we can see the steeple of the old wooden Holy Cross Lutheran Church. We know that the wooden church burned on August 18, 1930, therefore this scene must have been photographed prior to that date. Note the dirt streets and the trolley tracks where they crossed over Commercial Street in Farnham, N.Y. To the right (behind the gentleman and his auto), we see one of the angled tunnel walls of the Buffalo and Lake Erie Trolley Line.

In a recent article, we mentioned a book regarding the “Buffalo & Lake Erie Traction Co.”, written by William R. Gordon. This book about the B&LET trolley line is currently on loan to us from Mr. James E. Greene. Within this information packed book we found a few snippets related to Farnham and the trolley, so of course we will share them with you. On page 62 Mr. Gordon mentions: “The cars pass through Farnham, near where the soldiers of the Buffalo regiments go into camp every summer...”. He also quotes information from a news source referred to as ERJ Vol 32: “A party of 50 people were the guests of this company [Buffalo & Lake Erie Traction Co.] on Oct., 29, 1908 on an inspection trip from Buffalo to Farnham, the trip being the formal opening of the line from Angola to Farnham, a distance of 5 miles. The line from Farnham to Silver Creek, 5 miles, is to be opened next week.”

Kenneth A. Wittmeyer of Phoenix, AZ (formerly of East Eden, NY) passed away November 21, 2019. He was born September 21, 1950 in the home he grew up in. Ken moved to Phoenix, AZ in 1981 and retired in 2012 as a computer operator for the State of Arizona. He liked watching the Buffalo Bills and NY Yankees. He enjoyed traveling, latest being a Rocky Mountaineer train ride through the Canadian Rockies in 2018 and was back to East Eden for a wonderful visit this past summer. He entered into rest peacefully November 21, 2019 in his Phoenix home, surrounded by his loving brother and care giver Albert. Predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Carol.

George J. Guenther, 79, died Sunday, December 2, 2019.

He was a lifelong resident of Eden, New York. He was born in Buffalo, New York in 1940.

George married Virginia A. Neu on February 15, 1969 in Holy Spirit R.C. Church, North Collins, and NY. They were married for 50 years. George worked for the Erie County Department of Health for 42 years as a Supervisor. He served his county from 1963 to 1965 as a United States Army Sargent. He was a Past Commander and 50 year member of the American Legion Post #880 in Eden, NY; where he was also a member of the Honor Guard. George was a Life Member and Past President of the Eden Fire Company. He was a lifelong member and longtime Usher at the Immaculate Conception Church. He was also a Part time code Enforcement Officer for the town of Eden for some time. George enjoyed hunting and fishing. Devoted husband of Virginia A. (nee: Neu) Loving father of George V. (Brighid), Jeffery T. (Jessica) Guenther.

Diane G. Zittel

Diane G. Zittel (nee Hauth) peacefully passed away on December 2, 2019 in her home with family by her side, after battling a lengthy illness at age 82. She was born January 4th 1937 in in Buffalo New York to Naomi and LaVern Hauth of Boston New York. Diane was a graduate of Springville Griffith Institute where she was active in sports and a majorette in the high school marching band. She spent many years enjoying her lovely cottage on Chautauqua Lake.

Throughout her life she enjoyed sports, bowling, boating, fishing, horseshoes and playing euchre at VFW Post 1419 in Hamburg. She was preceded in death by her mother and father and her younger brother Duane Hauth. She is survived by her daughter Darlene Wittmeyer of Angola New York, James and Jean Zittel of Windber Pennsylvania, and John and Sandie Zittel of Hamburg New York. Grandchildren include: Timothy and Terrence Wittmeyer, Deanna, Jason and Kielah Zittel, Daniel, Kelly, Kathryn (Geiger) and Derek Zittel.
