The Eden United Methodist Church Welcomes New Pastor & Family

In July, the Reverend Pastor Kate Nicol, with her husband, Reverend David Nicol and two sons, Abraham and Andrew, moved from the Bangor, Maine area to Eden, NY. Pastor Kate was appointed to the Eden United Methodist Church while at the same time, Pastor David Nicol was appointed to the Hamburg United Methodist Church. Pastor Kate has settled into the Eden community participating in many activities the town offers. An avid cyclist, Pastor Kate also helps promote her son’s interest in sports activities of Baseball, Skiing Basketball. She is the coach of the Little Cagers basketball team. Among the recent introductions Pastor Kate has brought with her, the Blue Christmas (Longest Night) worship service. The service is held annually during the winter solstice, on or around December 20th-22nd. Specifically designed for individuals who are hurting and not feeling necessarily joyful during the holiday season.

The service offers care and understanding to those who are grieving. The reasons are many: Perhaps the loss of a loved one, loss of a job, recent divorce or frightening health diagnosis.

The service is open to all members of the community. The 2018 Blue Christmas service is scheduled for Thursday, December 20, at 7:30 pm. ________

Is anyone dreaming of a white Christmas?

If so, let’s hope it’s not to the extent we see in these photos! We could not resist sharing the photos of this amazing snowfall on Milestrip Road in the town of Brant circa 1941. The photos were donated to us by Larry and Mary Ellen Beuzenburg a few years back. Larry’s father, Clarence Beuzenburg, owned a construction business and had plenty of heavy duty equipment such as a crane, road grader and the D6 caterpillar tractor with plows we see in the photos. We had a recent opportunity to chat with Larry, and from our conversation we learned that his dad Clarence was the first in Western New York to have a diesel tractor, but not the D6 we see in the photos. He recalled that his dad dug a lot of ponds and basements in this area and that his company was also hired to clean out the marina bay at Sturgeon Point in Derby, N.Y. In addition to his construction business, Clarence, a lifelong resident of the town of Brant, was also the Town of Brant Justice of the Peace. This was an elected position that he held for forty years, until his passing in 1969. Larry is not certain why his dad was plowing the snow on Milestrip Road, other than to possibly lend a hand because of the volume of snow to clear from the roads.

Eden Elementary welcomed over 60 Veterans for a Veterans Day program on Tuesday, November 13th. The Veterans were treated to breakfast then taken to the auditorium to honor them for their service. The American Legion Honor Guard started things off with the presentation of the flag, and led the Pledge of Allegiance. There were slides and videos to show the Veterans in the service, their branch of service, and honoring the jobs that were done for our freedom. There was also a Missing Man Table explained by our student announcers, a special song, sung by all the students to the Veterans and the assembly ended with the traditional ending of the military day, the playing of Taps. This special day was made possible with the great support of the Staff at Eden Elementary, the PTA, American Legion, Wegmans, Shurfine, Tim Hortons, and Orangetheory Fitness. ________

Robert L. Browning Sr.

Robert L. Browning Sr., of Silver Creek, NY formerly of North Collins, NY passed away December 6, 2018.

Beloved husband of Dolores (Hilliard) Browning. Loving father of Robert Jr.(Janet), Ronald (Bobbie Jo), Randall (Tracy), Russell (Dolores) Browning, Kathy (Donald) Warrington, Darlene (Late Tom) Sell and Mary Jane (Skeeter) Wasmund. Grandfather of 17 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren. Brother of the late Mary Belle and Russell Browning. Brother in law of June Browning.

Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Friends called at the Wentland Funeral Home 10634 Main St., North Collins, NY. A mass of Christian burial was offered from St. Columban’s Church 2546 Lake Rd. (Rt. 5) Silver Creek NY. Bob was a Korean War Veteran, member of American Legion post 1640, William R. Dills VFW post 199, 16472 Samuel Cimino Post of Silver Creek, Hamburg Moose Lodge 1614 and a retiree of Bethlehem Steel. Condolences may be made at www.wentlandfuneralhome.com.

Christine M. Penn

Christine M. Penn (nee: Musiak) of Eden, NY, went home to the Lord surrounded by her family on December 5, 2018 after a sudden illness. Christine is survived by her husband 53 years, Ernest Penn, her children Ernest Jr (Mary), Carrie (Gregory) Jacobs, Christopher (Kathryn) and Eric (Brianne). She was the grandmother to Emily Penn; Gregory Jr., Jenna, Brian, and Sean Jacobs; Madeline and Seth Penn; and Jack, Liviya and Trey Penn. She is also survived by her brother, Edwin Musiak, and sister to Doreen Watson. Additionally, she will be missed by her brother in laws, sister in laws and nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Penn was born in Lackawanna, New York on May 29, 1946. She met her husband, Ernest, while writing letters to him while he was serving in the Army. They married on July 31, 1965 after a year of dating. They settled in Blasdell, NY where they raised their four children. They moved to Eden to be close to their daughter and her family. Christine was active in supporting her church. She was a friend to many, especially Joan Skoczylas. Christine could light up a room with her smile and she enjoyed just striking up a conversation with the person next to her. Services were arranged through Laing Funeral Home Inc., 2724 W. Church St. Eden where the wake was held on Sunday December 9, 2018 with Mass celebrated on Monday Dec. 10 at Immaculate Conception Church, Eden. Patricia M. Bellavia

Patricia M. Bellavia has entered her next journey to Heaven on Dec 4, 2018, who was born in Buffalo , NY in 1938 to Joseph and Mary, sister Christine; wife of Samuel ; Mom to Georgana & Dennis, Alysia & Ken, Roxana, Samuel and Rachel.

Grandma to Jessica, Valerie, Dennis II, and Joshua. She was a home health aide for many years.

Her body has been donated to UB School of Medicine for research.

After her ashes will be placed with her parents. The children of Patricia would like to thank everyone who has been there now and though out the years for her and us.
