THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR, BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS, LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.

I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE, AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.

I COULDN’T HELP WONDER HOW MANY LAY ALONE. ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT DID I SEE, NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT EVEN A TREE.

THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE, I DROPPED TO MY KNEES AND STARTED TO CRY.

NO STOCKING BY MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND, AND ON THE WALL PICTURES OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.

THE SOLDIER AWAKENED AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE. “SANTA DON’T CRY, THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;

WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS, A SOBERING THOUGHT CAME TO MY MIND.

I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, I DON’T ASK FOR MORE, MY LIFE IS MY GOD. MY COUNTRY. MY CORPS.”

FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, SO DARK AND SO DREARY, THE HOME OF A SOLDIER, NOW I COULD SEE CLEARLY.

I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL, AND WE BOTH SHIVERED FROM THE COLD EVENING’S CHILL.

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER, NOT HOW I PICTURED A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.

I DIDN’T WANT TO LEAVE ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT, THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR SO WILLING TO FIGHT.

WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I’D JUST READ? CURLED UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR A BED?

THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE, WHISPERED, “CARRY ON SANTA, IT’S CHRISTMAS DAY. ALL IS SECURE”

I REALIZED THE FAMILIES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT, OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.

Something was not right indeed: Itsy had broken his arm! As the nice doctors and nurses at Children’s Hospital got Itsy patched up and in a cast, Itsy spotted some curious kids peeking around the curtain. Later that night, Itsy met his Li’l League at the Eden Bowling Center, but he just couldn’t focus on the game. Even his favorite Chiavetta’s BBQ Chicken couldn’t take his mind off the new friends he’d met at the hospital.

It made him sad to think about those kids spending Christmas in the hospital instead of at home with their families.

Doughnuts from Eden Shurfine made it a real Christmas party! The kids had so much fun,they forgot about their troubles for the day. Itsy realized he never would have met these new friends if he hadn’t slipped on that banana peel.

He learned that sometimes when bad things happen, something good can come out of them, and that’s what we call a silver lining!

Welcome Mr. Jason Lyons Eden's New High School Principal

The Eden School-Community will soon welcome its new High School Principal, Jason Lyons. Mr. Lyons’ first day at Eden High School is December 20th. “To say that Mr. Lyons is excited about this new adventure is an understatement”, stated Superintendent Anzalone. “Our interview process is intense and Jason Lyons undoubtedly proved that he will be the perfect addition to our family of educators.”

A graduate of Lake Shore High School, Mr. Lyons holds a Bachelor of Science in History from SUNY Brockport, a Master of Science in General Education and a Master of Science in Educational Administration & Supervision, both from Canisius College.

For the last twenty years, Mr. Lyons has taught Social Studies at North Collins High School. He has also served as an Educational Specialist for the New York State Education Department as a writer for the New York State Social Studies Regents exam.

When asked about his new position, Jason stated, “I am extremely excited for the opportunity to be the Principal at Eden High School. I am looking forward to building a relationship with the community and the school. Together we can build on the tremendous success and tradition that has already been established.”

Jason lives in Hamburg with his wife, Jennifer, and two daughters, Sophia, 15 and Avery, 14.

The District is grateful to Mr. Joseph Lucenti, for his willingness and flexibility to serve as our interim Principal since August. Mr. Lucenti’s last day with Eden High School is December 20, 2019.

Eden Library has been selected as a recipient of a Code Club grant for small and/or rural libraries for 2020. Eden Library is the only Erie County library receiving the grant, one of only three libraries in New York State and one of only 50 libraries nationwide. The grant is being funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and administered through Prenda, a technology company based in Mesa, AZ. IMLS received over 250 applications for the grant.

Code Club is designed as an informal library program for children ages 8 to 18, teaching computer programming skills and web page design. The program is self-paced, so participants can work at their own learning speeds.

Facilitators do not need to have any coding experience of their own, just a willingness to coach. Skills developed in Code Club can lead to greater critical thinking capabilities, an enhanced set of life skills, and the potential for a successful career in the technology fields.

“With everything around us increasingly dependent on technology, computer programming skills become a necessity,” said Donna-Jo Webster, Eden Library Director.

“Students in small and rural communities need these skills just as much as their urban counterparts, or they risk being ‘left behind.’ The library is a community hub and the perfect source for information and lifelong learning, so offering a program for kids to expand their knowledge of computing coding and webpage design seems like a perfect fit.”

The grant award is valued at $4500.00 and includes oneon-one training for club facilitators, access to Prenda's coding software, ongoing coaching and technical support, and Sphero and Ozobot robots to reinforce newly learned coding skills. The grant is available for one year. Libraries receiving the award are expected to begin offering Code Club programs starting in January, 2020.

“We’re honored to be a grant recipient and are excited to bring Code Club to Eden Library,” Webster said. “More and more, services are being offered online and technology workers are in demand. With everything being done online, people no longer have to move to big cities to accept great jobs in technology-related fields. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if ten or fifteen years from now, some local kid launches a big Silicon Valley-type career right here in town, all because he or she attended Code Club at the library and developed all these 21st-century skills?” ### About Eden Library: Eden Library, founded in 1911, is part of the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library system. They have been in their current location on East Church Street since 1991 and circulate over 45,000 items annually, including books, magazines, DVDs, audiobooks, downloadable music, eBooks, and more. They provide access to free databases on a variety of subjects and offer more than 150 programs and events annually for the educational and recreational needs of community members of all ages.

I will say however that, to my surprise, I garnered over four hundred votes ... &, most importantly, only in pointing out how dangerous tractor trailers are on our small, residential roads. So, to my Constituents I say ... The election may be over, but the Campaign is not!

Jerey Stuart Bos

Jeffrey Stuart Bos passed from this domain on November 28, 2019 in the loving embrace of his wife Heather. Jeff was born on April 10, 1958 in Buffalo, NY, the son of late William J. and Jocelyn J. (Woodward) Bos. Survivors include wife Heather, daughter Sarah and son Jason; brother Steven Bos (wife Gail Simonds), sister Jocelyn Bos, sister-in-law Lydia Bos, and was the beloved uncle of many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Jocelyn, brother William S. Bos (Bill) and son Danny. Jeff grew up in Eden, NY and moved to Colorado in 1977, where he resided until he passed. Jeff worked at Kodak and retired from Vestas. He was a loving father to his 3 children and loved spending time with his family. He and Heather enjoyed their many trips camping in the mountains in their tear drop trailer, built by Jeff. Jeff loved the serenity of the mountains.

He loved rock and roll, was an avid skier, he was a devoted Buffalo Bills fan and all things history. He was extremely intelligent and an avid reader; a true intellectual. Diane R. Roe (nee Conn) of Angola, NY passed away Friday, December 6, 2019, in Buffalo Mercy Hospital, she was 84. Beloved wife of the late Anthony Roe; loving mother of Kathleen Riehle, Sharon (Leo Kearns) Roe, Thomas (Mihaela) Roe and Cynthia (David) Wolff. Sister of William (Bea) Conn, Elizabeth (Bill) Swaffer, Sheldon (Veronica) Conn and the late Carol (Sandy) Mackay. Survived by her beloved friends Nora Pomplun, Georgette Ross and Beverly Hagens. Also survived by 14 grand, 23 great grand Children and and 1 great great grandchild. Friends called at the ADDISON FUNERAL HOME, INC. 262 N. Main St. Angola, NY where services were also held. Eden Central School District is excited to be welcoming a new face to the administrative team. Mr. Jason (Jay) Iwankow will begin his position as Athletic Director/ Assistant Principal on December 20th, just in time to meet the staff and students before the winter recess.

“This combined position of AD/AP was created to help in the reorganization of our Middle & High School, and Mr. Iwankow’s energy and passion is the reason he is a perfect fit for our school district”, stated Superintendent Anzalone. While Mr. Iwankow’s primary focus will be athletics, this will also give him an opportunity to make a difference with the entire 6-12 student body.”

Mr. Iwankow earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Health from Canisius College, and a Master’s in Educational Administration from Grand Canyon University. He has taught Health/Physical Education, and coached multiple sports at all tiers, for the last thirteen years. His most recent assignment was with the Niagara Wheatfield School District where he was a Dean of Students.

When asked about his new position, Mr. Iwankow stated, “I found my success academically in my career because of athletics. I know firsthand that it is a privilege to be a student athlete and how athletics overall impacts a student’s educational career.”

One of the reasons Jay was drawn to the Eden school district was the overall family atmosphere and sense of community. “I want to work for a school district that feels like home and where I can build successful relationships with all community members.”

Mr. Iwankow lives in West Seneca with his wife, Alison, his two-year old son, Jack and his dog, Reggie.

The district is grateful to Mr. Jim Graczyk for serving as our Interim Athletic Director, and to Mr. Jason Bernardone, GLP Physical Education teacher, for serving as our Teacher on Special Assignment, since the beginning of November. Their last day in this capacity is December 20. ________
