World War II began on September 1, 1939, and ended some 6 years later when both Japanese and German focuses surrendered to Allies. Unfortunately, more than 405,399 (2,261 from Erie County, New York) United States Military Members died in combat fighting in battles like; Battle of the Bulge, Battle of Iwo Jima, Battle of Crete, Battle of the Atlantic, Battle of Berlin, D-Day, Battle of Midway, and many others. These men sacrificed their lives for our freedom! They boarded planes, and ships headed for distant lands, not knowing if they would ever return to our nation’s shores! They fought bravery and with honor to insure our way of life as the greatest country in the world…They fought for YOU! The primary focus of Whirlwind Veterans and Warrior Retreat is to provide agricultural therapy, and resiliency to our veterans. In addition, we also seek to educate the community on the many sacrifices that have been made for our freedom! We ask that you please join us on December 7th, for a moment of remembrance, and take the opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to the World War II Veterans in the Erie County area.

Peter Gervais of Wisconsin, ( V i e t n a m Ve t e r a n ) , formerly of North Collins, died November 16, 2019. He was 69. He was a beloved husband of Chris (Gamroth).

He was loving father of Thomas A. (Kim) Gervais.

Stepfather of Michael and Belinda. Cherished grandfather of Aviana & Paul.

Step Grandfather of Cheyenne. Brother of Gaetan (Sally) Gervais and Michelle (Chuck) Bullock. A memorial service will be held December 1, at Schramka Funeral Home in Wisconsin.

Barbara J. Burke of Hamburg NY, formerly of Eden passed away November 25, 2019 at age 97. She was born in 1922 in Buffalo, NY. She was a daughter of the late William H. and Ella (McConnell) Jones. Barbara was a graduate of the University of Buffalo with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in 1952 and received her Master’s Degree in Education from Buffalo State in 1971. She proudly served in the United States Navy from 1943-1946. She also worked for Marine Midland Bank as well as the Eden Town Courts as a Court Clerk. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Hamburg. She enjoyed volunteering for the American Red Cross and the Hamburg Elementary School. She was a past member of the Eden Garden Club as well as a retired Senior Vol. Program for Erie County. She was once active in the Lafayette High School Association. Besides her parents, Barbara is predeceased by her husband, the late William T. Burke, her twin brother Bruce Jones and a sister Gloria Ader. Barbara is survived by her children Kevin and Patrick (Marilyn) Burke, her grandchildren; Caitlin and Laura and 3 Great Grandchildren; Avery, Kassidy and Kennedy. Also survived by 4 nieces and 1 nephew. A Memorial Service will be held on January 4, 2020 at 1:00PM in the Trinity Episcopal Church, 261 E. Main St. Hamburg, NY. The Buffalo and Lake Erie Traction trolley tracks on Main Street in the Village of Angola As mentioned in a recent article, our historical societies were each given a unique donation; a research project of James E. Greene devoted to rediscovering the Buffalo and Lake Erie Traction trolley line. His well-documented research encourages the idea of a “RAIL TO TRAIL” scenario; resurrecting the old trolley line into a useful recreational trail. In addition to detailing the once 93 mile trolley route, his booklet contains many then vs. now photographs. One of the primary resources for Jim’s research was a book by William R. Gorden titled“Buffalo and Lake Erie Traction Co.”.

Today’s photo is borrowed from Mr. Gorden’s book. It depicts a view of Main Street, Angola, looking North from the N.Y. Central railroad tracks. The photo date is 1909.

(110 years ago!) Today, as in the photograph, Shultz’ hardware store can be found on the same corner of Main, Lake and Commercial Streets (although it is a different building). At that time, the trolley traveled down Main Street and turned right near the area where Crosby’s store stands today. In 1912 the trolley station was built at School and Main Street. It was #21 on the route and was referred to as Clifton’s. From Clifton’s station, the trolley line would then head towards the Angola power house which was (and the building still is) located just before Sister’s Creek. Once across the creek, that section of the trolley line continued en-route to Buffalo, N.Y. In his research, Jim notes that not all sections of the trolley route could become a recreational trail. However, he highlights the idea of opening the trail between Angola and Farnham and maybe as far as the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation. And while we are brainstorming - why not a side trail headed towards and through the Evangola State Park? These are interesting historical related projects to consider!
