The Eden Girls Varsity Volleyball team volunteered their time this fall to give back to a community and a sport that has given them so much. The team participated in the Big Sister/Little Sister Volleyball Program where the team coached girls in grades 3-6, who had an interest in volleyball. The big sister/little sister pairs worked on passing, setting and serving skills in their 5 weeks together, and all the girls came away from the experience with a greater love of volleyball and Eden pride! I Remember When

74 Years ago, while still in the Navy, I was 21, I joined the Eden American Legion. At that time their meeting hall was the Grange Building on West Church located where the Laing Funeral home is today. Originally this building had been the German Evangelical Church (From Doris Anderson's History). I remember that Herb Webb , Sr was the Bartender.WW1 Veterans started the Legion. and named it after two WW1 Veterans who had been killed in the war. They were Loren Newell a Marine and Herman Faulkner. The one Veteran from WW1 that I remember, he was Treasurer for many years, Walter Watson. In 1955 work began on the present day Meeting Hall. Cal Miller and Norm Soule, both carpenters seem to stick in my mind as to working on the building. It would take a book to tell of the thing's that the Legion has done for the community. Some of course, are the Eden Community Pool, Scholarships, and the Corn Festival. Fabulous Bluebird Workshop

Last Saturday, November 12, the Eden CONSERVATION BOARD conducted the 20th annual and a very successful Bluebird Nesting Box workshop. There were 50 attendees, perhaps a quarter of them children, including three cub scouts, four girl scouts and 5 scout leaders. We all were missing Ken Foltyniak, who was not able to attend due to a medical procedure. We will always be grateful to him for sourcing the wood and cutting out all the parts for the houses.

Mike Bolo led the group step by step and drilled a door latch for each box. Also helping to run the event were Conservation Board members President Lamont Beers, Mary Jane Bolo, Judy Striebich, and Joanne Dobler. Gordon Robinson was an additional helper.

Some 43 nesting boxes were completed with no hammer or nail injuries to hands/fingers. The boxes should be put up in a mowed lawn area as soon as possible because bluebirds will be coming in March, or maybe some will choose to spend the winter in one. Isn’t this one more thing we Eden residents can rightly be ever so proud of?

OBITUARIES

David Knoll of Eden, NY passed away November 7, 2022 at the age of 78 years. Son of the late Martin and Alberta Knoll. Brother of Beverly (late Owen) Moore, Wayne Knoll, Denise (late David) Przywara, Kim Knoll and the late Marilyn Denning. Brother in law of Phillip Denning. Also survived by nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, family and friends. Friends called at the Wentland Funeral Home 10634 Main St., North Collins, NY where funeral services were also held. Dave was a Past Commander of American Legion Post #880 and a US Army Veteran.

Donald G. Kaufman

Donald G. Kaufman “Don” of South Dayton formerly of Eden, NY entered into eternal rest unexpectedly Nov. 6, 2022 at the age of 69. Predeceased by his parents George and Alma (Sickau) Kaufman, wife Bonnie (Rubeck) and two infant granddaughters Indica and Amora. Cherished father of Amber, Donald, Kassandra, Summer and Quinn. Grandfather of Hunter, Autumn, Edward, Draya, Taylor, Sierra, Keira, Karinna, Shailyn, Dakota, Andrew, Samantha and Ashley. Life companion of Barb Sporer and his dog Moe. Don worked most of his life as a carpenter. He loved hunting, fishing, camping and cooking. He was a huge Buffalo Bills and Sabres fan and frequently enjoyed a nice cold Labatt Blue. As per Don’s wishes no visitation or services will be held. Arrangements were though Wentland Funeral Home North Collins, NY at the privacy and convenience of his family. A celebration of Don’s life will be held at a later date.
