Evans and Brant Historical Societies at the 2022 Erie County Fair

For the past few years, the Evans Historical Society has graciously invited the Brant Historical Society to join them in preparing exhibits for the Erie County Fair. Each year, the Fair suggests a theme and this year the theme was “Transportation”. Mr. Gifford Swyers, a member of the Evans Historical Society, had done extensive research on this topic and shared his ideas with the group - which in turn generated plenty of enthusiasm for the upcoming display!

Early in the planning stages, it was decided that the display, rather than concentrating on one mode of travel or transportation theme, would focus on a variety of transportation related items. Our towns are unique in that we had so many transportation topics to select from and highlight. Some are shared by both towns, such as the Native American trails, dirt and plank roads which evolved into main highways of Routes 5 and 20 and the Thruway, the B & E Trolley Line, nine different Railroads and two private airports - one named the Angola Airport, but physically located in Brant and the other located in Evans on Eden-Evans Center Road. Transportation items pertinent to Evans only, were the Emblem Mfg. Co. (manufacturer of bicycles and motorcycles), and the steam powered yachts used by the wealthy families who owned estates along the Evans Lake Erie shoreline. Adding even more interest to the historical exhibit was the tale of the first Trans-American Motorcycle Trip of 1903, when George A. Wyman, starting in San Francisco, C.A., came across the country, through Buffalo, N.Y. to Albany and then to his destination of New York City. Local legend tells us that a blacksmith in the village of Angola helped to repair Wyman’s motorcycle, as he was travelling through Evans. Another transportation story depicted in the display was that of the 1908 Great American Auto Race (from New York to Paris), where one of the cars actually broke down near Evans - leaving a car jack behind in its haste to continue the race.

Along with the various photos and transportation stories, the artifacts on display were quite impressive and helped to fully complete the transportation theme. Included were an Emblem Tricycle made in Angola, a 1930 Trophy Cup from the BEST STICK LANDING COMPETITION held at ANGOLA AIRPORT including pilot goggles, the shovel used during the groundbreaking ceremony at the Eden-Evans Thruway Exit 57A, and a railroad lantern and oil can to name more than a few. Also, on loan from the Highland Hobby Shop was a series of five different Emblem Mfg. Co. bicycle badges and a set of B & E Trolley rails.

Numerous people worked together on the display. Their input along with the historical content and artifacts, was invaluable in communicating our theme “AMERICA ON THE MOVE - THROUGH EVANS / BRANT” to the visitors of the Historical Building at the fair. Each of the local historical societies participating in the Erie County Fair competition were judged on four categories: Accuracy and Content, Presentation, Creative Ability, and Mechanics. When the results were tallied, our score was 288 out of a possible 300 points! We even received a perfect score of 100 from one of the judges! For our efforts we were awarded two prize ribbons: “First Place” and “Best In Show”! We were all thrilled and proud to share the transportation history of Evans and Brant with all those who visited the Fair! And...if you missed the Fair, the exhibit is currently on display at the Evans Town Hall.

Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage. This horrific conflagration killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance, making it the longest-running public health observance in our country. During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in case of a fire. Firefighters provide lifesaving public education in an effort to drastically decrease casualties caused by fires.

There is something about the winter months and curling up with a good book by the fireplace. But did you know that heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths? With a few simple safety tips and precautions you can prevent most heating fires from happening.

• Keep anything that can burn at least three-feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, replace, wood stove, or portable space heater.

• Have a three-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters.

• Never use your oven to heat your home.

• Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer’s instructions.

• Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.

• Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.

• Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters.

• Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.

• Test smoke alarms at least once a month.

Install wood burning stoves following manufacturer’s instructions or have a professional do the installation. All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside to avoid carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

Install and maintain CO alarms to avoid the risk of CO poisoning. If you smell gas in your gas heater, do not light the appliance. Leave the home immediately and call your local fire department or gas company.

• Turn off portable heaters when you leave a room or go to sleep.

• Never leave a candle burning unattended, and consider replacing traditional candles with battery-operated flameless versions.

• Keep matches and lighters out of reach from children, and make sure they know never to play with these items.

• Replace or repair loose plugs, exposed wiring or frayed extension cords, and avoid overloading outlets and extension cords.

• Keep any items that can catch fire at least three feet away from cooking and heating devices.

• Remain in the kitchen when cooking food. Always turn off the stove if you leave the kitchen even for a brief period of time.

STAY ALIVE

• In the event of a fire, yell “Fire” repeatedly and evacuate immediately. Once outside, call 911 or the fire department, and never reenter a burning building for any reason.

• If a door or door handle feels warm to the touch, do not open it. Use an alternate escape route.

•If you must walk through smoke, get as close to the ground as possible to escape under the smoke, closing doors behind you.

• If your clothing catches fire, always remember to stop, drop and roll, covering your face with your hands.

• If you can’t escape a room, close the door and cover vents and door cracks with a towel or cloth to keep out smoke. Call 911 or the fire department, and signal for help at the window with a piece of cloth or a flashlight.

• If you are unable to reach pets or someone in the home needing assistance, evacuate, call 911 and tell the emergency operator and firefighters where the person or pet is located.

Here is comes right down the middle. I swing and its gone. I run touching all the bases. The crowd is cheering. I high five all my teammates. Now its time for me to take mound. I throw the ball, it is a strike. The next ball I throw, strike two. The next, a ball. I take a deep breath, compose myself. The next pitch I throw is a strike. The umpire calls ‘Strike Three”! Paul Michael Kuebler Jr.

Paul Michael Kuebler, Jr, 72, of Rockingham, North Carolina formally of Hamburg, NY passed away during Covid on Wednesday, November 18, 2020. He was a son of the late Paul Michael Kuebler, Sr. and Annette Marie Smith Kuebler. Paul was an Eagle Scout with Troop 508, a graduate in the Class of 1966 of Saint Francis High School and a 1977 graduate of Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, NC. He served in US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and was a two-time Purple Heart recipient as a Vietnam Veteran. He worked for the NC Highway Patrol and NC Department of Transportation for 30 years. Also, he was an active member of St. James Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Parents without Partners, and VFW Post 4203. Paul was a master mason and served his community as a small engine repairman after retirement. He served as an officer in multiple community organizations and donated to charities that made a difference in his local community and globally. Surviving, a daughter, Christine Renee Kuebler Albright and husband Jeff of Climax, NC; Grandchildren, Mary Jane Elizabeth, Emily Renee and Michael Ray Ellis, all of Climax, NC; Siblings, Jean Ayers (Mark), Barbara Ortel, Donna Harper (Benny), Sharon Washer (late husband Luther), Gerald Kuebler (Elizabeth) and Lisa Nelson (John); Several Nieces and nephews and great nieces and nieces and nephews; And his companion Beverly Thackson; and his dog companion Buddy. His ashes will be buried with his late nephew (Dustin Washer). A military graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, October 15, 2022 at Scio Fairlawn Cemetery, 4056 State Route 19, Scio, NY 14880. Memorials can be made to the Richmon Co. Humane Society, 529 W US 74 Hwy, Rockingham, NC 28379.

Gunnar James Dole Suddenly October 4, 2022 of North Collins, NY at the age of 30 Years. Beloved son of Kim Dole and Dan Powley. Grandson of the late Richard and Evelyn Dole and John and Lillian Powley. Also survived by many aunts, uncles and friends.
