Legislator Mills’ October Column Hello, I hope everyone is doing well. The leaves here in Erie County are starting to change and my district has some of the best sights for fall foliage—I recommend a nice drive out that way and maybe even stop at Awald Farms in North Collins, the Southtowns Scenic Byway or Hen-Hawk Acres in Sardinia for some pumpkin picking and a bite to eat. It is the perfect way to spend a fall day for the whole family.

Meanwhile, it is business as usual here at Old County Hall in Downtown Buffalo where I continue to serve my constituents in District 11. Back in early September, I was pleased when my proposed law allowing 12 and 13-year-olds in Erie County to hunt deer with a firearm or crossbow passed the Legislature; however, after another public hearing, County Executive Mark Poloncarz vetoed our law despite the fact that the vast majority of speakers were in favor of its passing. This makes Erie County one of two counties in the State who refuse to allow this— even given the fact that individuals this age can already hunt smaller game with the exact same firearms. This is extremely disheartening to many local sportsmen who want to pass their knowledge down to the younger generation of hunters. I want to thank everyone who attended both of the public hearings and spoke in favor of this law and all of the good it would have done. I wish we could have had a better outcome.

How wonderful is it to see our Buffalo Bills at the top of the National Football Standings? I am a proud Buffalo Bills fan and I am elated to see the fanfare surrounding the team now more than ever. I am sure everyone has heard talks of a potential new stadium as the lease on Highmark Stadium ends after the 2022 season. I am not happy with the lack of government transparency happening with the new Bills stadium study.

My colleagues and I in the Minority Caucus introduced a resolution, which unanimously passed the Legislature, that directs Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, Pegula Sports and Entertainment and New York State to release their study.

Highmark Stadium is located in Orchard Park which is part of my legislative district. Whatever happens with the stadium, my district and constituents will be impacted greatly and it is my duty to be aware, be present and know what is going on behind closed doors. I will not and cannot vote on something I am not fully aware of.

Trunk or Treat

On Saturday, October 23, 2021, Eden’s East Church Street was alive with excitement and the cheerful sounds of children’s voices, while 150 costumed children and their families gathered to celebrate Eden’s Halloween. The annual event is sponsored by The Eden Chamber, with Fire and Police Departments and Eden United Methodist Church (EUMC) participating. Since its inception five years ago, “Trunk or Treat” has become a favorite event of local families. After parading from the town hall to the Evergreen Cemetery, the goblins and ghosts make their return trip through the EUMC parking lot. It is at this time the youngsters visit the opened trunks of participating individuals who have decorated their vehicle trunks with Halloween motif and pass out a variety of sweets and treats, including age appropriate books. From the church parking lot, the families return to the town hall for refreshments and costume prizes.

THANK YOU for all of the donations and to everyone who supported the basket raffle and euchre tournament for the Donna Osinski Scholarship Fundraiser.

Eden Legion Post 880 Celebrates 100th Anniversary

On October 2, 2021 Newell Faulkner Post 880 held an Open House to celebrate their 100th anniversary which was delayed a year due to the pandemic.

Commander Jim Blidy shared some interesting facts: Post 880 was chartered on October 3, 1920.

Auxiliary Unit 880 was chartered on August 10,1946 and the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 880 was chartered in 2000.

He also informed those present of the number of hours the Post’s Honor Guard volunteer for memorial services, funerals and other community service programs. Prior to the pandemic, the Honor Guard averaged over 1,000 volunteer man hours. In 2020 it was less than 600 hours due to the pandemic and as of October 15, 2021 they have totaled 686 volunteer man hours so far.

Post 880’s Honor Guard is very highly regarded for their precision and professionalism. They not only attend member’s funerals and services right here in Eden, but also are requested to provide a 21 gun salute and taps for military funerals throughout Erie County. Each year they are requested at the Erie County Fair and at events such as the Stars and Stripes Golf Classic.

This is all done on a 100% volunteer basis.

Other Post 880 members volunteer in a lot of other ways. Legion members place the Flags along Main Street each Spring and then take them down in the Fall. They also untangle them when the wind tangles them up and replace them if they become tattered. Several volunteers from the Legion, Auxiliary and Sons place flags on the graves of those buried in Eden’s cemeteries and then remove them again in the Fall. It is estimated that members volunteer 60+ hours a week throughout the year.

Much of the volunteer work is done behind the scenes and most people, both fellow members and those in the community don’t even know of their many volunteer hours.

We have come a long way in 101 years. We would like to thank the town and community for all their support. Our grounds have been utilized by Little League Baseball, Little Loop Football, and through the Eden Recreation Department the swimming pool and basketball courts on our property are used by many residents. For 57 years it has been the home of the Eden Corn Festival.

Newell Faulkner Post 880 American Legion has served the Eden Community for past 100 years and will continue to do so.

At the monthly meeting, Wednesday October 20, 2021, the Eden Respite Program celebrated its “Which Witch is Which” themed gathering at the Eden United Methodist Church.

Activities included “Witches and Warlocks” bingo, designing and painting seasonal greetings cards to use this week, and sing-a-long entertainment by “Monster Mash Musician” Rich Schaefer. Kitchen Witches conjured up a spellbinding lunch of Spooky Butternut Squash Soup partnered with finger “sand-witches”, speared veggies and Black Magic cupcakes.

At no cost to the guests, the Eden Respite program is intended to provide individuals suffering with dementia, an opportunity to partake in a social, supportive and secure environment while giving caregivers a temporary relief they need.

1903: On December 4th, land for St . Anthony’s Church in Farnham was purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Salvatore Muscarelli for $300.00. Buffalo Diocese Bishop Charles H. Colton, established the Parish in 1904. The church was named after St. Anthony, the beloved patron saint of Italy, due to the large number of Italian immigrants that settled in this area. The wooden church cost $2,500.00. Father Diafina was the first resident Pastor.

1903: St. John the Baptist Church was established in 1903. It was built in 1904 on Brant Street in the town of Brant, just outside the village limits of North Collins. The building was a frame structure with a seating capacity of one hundred twenty-five persons.

It was built by Charles A. Hager at an approximate cost of $5,000.00.

1904: Camp Porter, Farnham, N.Y. Training camp for National Guard troops. To be continued.

Walden Krull, Sr. and Family Within our 1939 Town of Brant Centennial History Book we discovered the following: “An early German settler in the Eastern end of the Town of Brant, was Mr. William Krull, Sr. At the age of eighteen, Mr. Krull settled in the Town of Brant. He first worked for Nelson Woodward, then Mr. Harrison Christy, receiving $25.00 per month and room and board. Saving a part of this money and going heavily in debt, he purchased the William Krull, Sr. present Walden-Krull Home.”

In our 175th Town of Brant 1853 - 1930 Anniversary Book, William Krull’s greatgranddaughter Joan Lemmler Will shared further information: “My great grandparents on mom’s side - William Krull Sr. affectionately known as “King Krull” - and Louisa lived on the Milestrip Road. Great Grandpa was one of the first settlers from Germany to settle in the Town of Brant. He came to American in 1871 and became a U.S. Citizen in 1879. He was a founding member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Farnham.”

The Eden Raiders Girls cross country team repeated as ECIC Division IV champions. Gerald A. Agle, a lifelong Eden farmer, currently residing in Zephyrhills, FL, passed away Saturday, October 23, 2021 at age 88. He was a beloved husband of 66 years to Joyce (Witte), a loving father to his sons: Mark Agle (Laurie), Paul Agle (Barbara), and Roger Agle (April). He was a proud grandfather of six and greatgrandfather of four. He loved entertaining the children with his humor and feeding them sweets any chance he could get. Gerald spent his life dedicated to his family, his community, his country, and his church. He was a life member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Eden, where he served as Elder, Trustee, and a member of the District Walther League group. He also served as a Cub Scout leader and a 4-H leader for 20 years.

Gerald served on the Agway board of directors and was a charter member of the Eden Valley Growers. Gerald also proudly served his country in the United States Army as Corporal from 1956-1958.

His talents were many and he was knowledgeable about everything; always ready with advice, a joke, or an anecdote.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Eden, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Words of sympathy may be made on www.LaingFuneralHome.com
