Elle Noecker Breaks Multiple School Records

Local Eight-Grader Elle Noecker took first place and broke 2 Eden High School swimming records at ECICs Championship Meet held on October 18. She raced the 200 yard freestyle setting a new school record of 1:58.12 and broke her own record set earlier in the season in the 100 back with a 58.48. She currently holds four school records and has qualified for four individual events at the upcoming 2019 NYSPHSAA Girls Swimming and Diving Championships. The Lady Raiders relay teams also put in strong performances taking second place in the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay consisting of Noecker, Caroline Coleman, Sam Crowe, Maya Hartman and Sophia Noecker.

Members of the North Collins Veterans’ Tribute Committee and local officials were excited to see that the Eternal Flame in the monument in the Veterans’ Tribute has finally been lighted. The Flame structure, which was carved and imported from Italy sits in the center of the Tribute Star honoring members of all five branches of the services. The flame, powered by natural gas, will burn at all times to honor the service provided by the men and women who have served the country. James Lint is the Tribute Coordinator and has spearheaded fundraising events and execution of this monument to service men and women, living and deceased. An additional 130 bricks will be installed within the next month.

For her participation in the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library “Ticket to Read” program, Kerrigan Biastre was awarded a $50 Amazon gift card by the Angola Public Library. The “Ticket to Read” program was a reading event that ran all summer at all 37 library branches in the county. Teens ages 1317 were encouraged to participate. Only one winner is drawn at the county level. Kerrigan entered by filling out a ticket for every book read during the summer months. Her entries were submitted at the Angola Public Library.

Kerrigan is 13 and an 8th grade student at the Eden Jr-Sr High School. She loves to read and her favorite authors are Jenny Han and Jennifer Niven. She also enjoys playing the piano, violin and spending time with her friends. Kerrigan sees herself working in the medical field after graduation. She is the daughter of Re’ and Deborah Biastre. While certain breast cancer risk factors, including gender and age, are beyond women's control, the American Cancer Society notes that certain factors are related to personal behaviors. Alcohol consumption is one such lifestyle-related risk factor for breast cancer.

Compared with nondrinkers, women who consume between two and five alcoholic drinks per day have about a 1.5 times greater risk of developing breast cancer than women who abstain from alcohol. A woman's risk of developing breast cancer increases only slightly compared to nondrinkers if she has just one alcoholic beverage per day. Weight is another breast cancer risk factor that women can control. Women who are overweight or obese have a greater risk of developing breast cancer than those who are not. Prior to menopause, womens' ovaries make most of their estrogen, with fat tissue making just a small amount. But womens' ovaries stop making estrogen when they enter menopause, at which time fat tissue produces most of their estrogen. Having excessive fat tissue can increase estrogen levels and raise a woman's risk for breast cancer. If or when a woman decides to have children can also affect her risk for breast cancer. According to the ACS, women who have not had children or who had their first child after turning 30 have a slightly higher risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer than women who had many pregnancies and became pregnant at an early age.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, dental caries, or tooth decay, is five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever in children. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that children with dental caries in their baby teeth are at much greater risk for cavities in their adult teeth. This budget includes the following proposed increases by fund: · General, 12.78% · Highway, 1.93% · Lighting, 1.56% · Fire, 2.0% What is the reason for the 12% increase in the General Fund? Fiscally irresponsible and failed budget planning from the previous Town Board, which included my opponent. For example: $464,000 Shortfall in Reserves. There was a $464,000 shortfall in sick reserves when I was elected, leaving the Town vulnerable to employee contracts and retirement commitments. Since elected in 2016, I have worked to close that shortfall, and we have been able to reduce this by 46%. This budget is also addressing two pending police retirements.

Negligent Budget Cuts for Essential Positions. In 2013 the Town Board, which included my opponent reduced the funding for the Code Enforcement Officer position. The previous Board changed this from a full-time to part-time position. The current Town Board has had to restore funding back to full-time because this cut led to increased property complaints, unaddressed building permits and inspections, and approximately1,700 open permits.

On September 28 the Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer Players of Eden held their third annual dulcimer workshop at the Eden United Methodist Church. The guest dulcimer artist was Joe Collins from North Carolina. Joe Collins is a national dulcimer player champion in addition to being a nationally known dulcimer teacher, composer and arranger. He taught the eighteen participants, who included eight new friendly dulcimer players from out of the Eden area, subjects such as playing embellishments - hammer-on, pull-off, slides, songs for children, traditional Appalachian songs and a few humorous tunes. At the end of the instruction period, Joe gave a short concert and then, the following day, Sunday morning, he performed in church, singing and playing a new arrangement of Amazing Grace and then one of his own compositions. His performance, both days, was acclaimed by all who heard him.

Lawrence E. Koch of North Collins, NY passed away October 19, 2019 at the age of 86 years. Beloved husband of Judith (Yull) Koch. Loving father of Linda, Carl (Laurel) Koch, Regina (Richard) Summermatter, Susan Koch (Daniel Pisa), and Paul (Jacqueline) Koch. Grandfather Ashley and Brandon. Brother of Dorothy Brown, Eleanor (Ronald) Audolsek, Elizabeth Macdonald, Katherine Yaeger, Margaret (Glenn) Simmons, Charles (Dale), Frederick (Kathy), Christopher (Michelle) Koch and the late Carl Koch Jr., Patricia Sexton, John and Edward Koch. POETRY CORNER Ghoul Party by Nelson R. Locher There was a party planned at a house down the street.

It would be a fun night with plenty of people to meet.

This costume party had one main rule.

Everyone who comes, has to be dressed as a ghoul.

An excited young boy was getting ready to go.

There was something about this party that he really needed to know.

He put on his costume with the utmost of care.

It brought him joy, to show off what he would wear.

When he stepped through the door, his smile turned to a frown.

No one else at the party was costumed as a silly clown.

The day he was invited, he misinterpreted the rule.

The only thing he remembered hearing, come to the party dressed like a fool.
