Civil War. . . Doane, William (North Collins)

William Doane was born 15 November 1816 in Eden, NY, to David Doan and Anna Hill. He was the second of their ten known children. His brother John (3rd born child) died in 1864 at Petersburg, VA in service with the 1st SharpShooters of the 27th Michigan Infantry.

William married Julia Ann Stickley on 30 June 1844. They had seven children, only four of whom lived to adulthood. In 1845, they were living in North Collins, likely in the New Oregon area. William’s father was instrumental in the construction of the first Methodist Church there.

By 1850, William and Julia were living in North Collins with their three children and a 14-year-old domestic servant girl. William was a sawyer by trade. By 1855, they no longer had the domestic servant. By 1860, they had added another child to the family and William was owner/operator of his own sawmill. According to the 1860 US Census Industry Schedule, William’s sawmill at New Oregon was a $500 investment that used 125,000 feet of logs valued at $250 in the previous year.

It ran on water power and employed one man at an average wage of $20 per month. The mill had produced 125,000 feet of lumber valued at $565.

On 12 October 1861, William enlisted at age 40 at North Collins in Company E of the 10th NY Cavalry as a musician/ private for 3 years. He claimed that he had been on detached duty at a hospital for most of that enlistment (he was a bugler, musicians were often assigned as stretcher bearers [especially following a battle] so his claim to have served at a hospital was not off track). He re-enlisted 20 January 1864 at North Collins for an additional 3 years but mustered out on 19 July 1865 at the end of the war from Company E of the 1st NY Provisional Cavalry at Cloud’s Mills, Virginia, for which he collected $580 county bounty if disbursed by the town supervisor. During this enlistment he claimed to have served as assistant surgeon.

By the 1865 NYS Census, William and Julia were living with their five children on a farm which they owned in North Collins.

On the 1870 US Census, William and Julia are still living on the farm but only the two youngest children are still living at home and attending school. That year their farm was listed as 26 acres improved land, 3 acres unimproved land, with a value of $1500 and equipment value of $150. The farm had 1 horse, 2 milk cows, 1 other cattle, 6 sheep, and 1 swine, with total livestock value of $175 (the high value of stock suggests he may have had some registered stock).

In 1872, William served as Election Inspector in District #2 of North Collins. In 1875, William and Julia are still living on the farm but William now lists his occupation as sawyer/ farmer. Only their youngest daughter Abby, age 19 and teaching school, is still living at home.

By 1880, William (age 69) is a widower living with daughter Susan and her husband Eugene Bishop and their two children in Brant; occupation is farmer. On 12 November 1880, William was granted his Invalid Pension. In 1881, William applied for membership in James Aers Post #202 G.A.R. in Angola. He claimed service as bugler in Co. E of 10th NY Cavalry from September 1861 with reenlistment to end of war.

But by 1885, William is living with son Albert and family in Maine Prairie, Minnesota Territory. He may have been living with another of his children in Iowa at the time of his death at age 76. William died 28 May 1893 in Dublin, Washington County, Iowa.

The Eden Business/Computer Department students attended a field trip to the Whirlpool Jet Boat facility in Lewiston, NY. The tour began with a presentation from the owner. A few of the topics discussed were regarding starting a business, the rewards and challenges of being a business owner, the importance of verbal and written communication skills, the marketing of a business, and dealing with government regulations. After the presentation the students boarded the one-of-a kind vessel which was designed by one of the owners. During the boat ride on the Niagara River, the guide explained the region's geology and history and noted key sites along the way such as the Niagara Power Plant. The trip was educational as well as exciting as the students held on tight as we approached the Class5 rapids of the Whirlpool and Devil's Hole Rapids, with 360-degree spins along the way. No one departed the boat dry! The students will never forget this experience and they are grateful for the opportunity.

They delivered almost 300 pounds of food and over $330 to the Pantry. The Eden North Collins Pantry is grateful for the efforts of the 4-H Club and to James Gephart, manager of Eden Shurfine. Flag Retreat Honoree Paul Lawton

Robert J. Mertle

Robert J. Mertle passed away October 14th at age 77. He was born Nov. 15th 1943. Survived by wife Mary. Loving father of the late Kathleen Smith. Proud grandfather of David and Robert. Son of the late Ralph and Margaret. Brother of the late Richard and (Marcie), late Shirley and (Bob Wagenblatt), Joan and (late Tom Abbott), Ralph and (Wende). Also survived by several nieces and nephews. His first job in 1960 was at the Eden Valley Golf Course. He had a variety of tasks and planted most of the trees. he began working for the New York Telephone Co. in 1962 and retired after almost 30 years. These were his favorite things... A 1967 Pontiac GTO which he kept spotless and never dirty. He rode a 1967 BSA, Harley Full Dresser and Honda 4-wheeler.

He played golf and had a hole in one at Eden Valley on the #2 hole in the pouring rain which you couldn’t see drop in the cup. He was 3 under after 2 holes, wanted to quit and go to the bar for a beer and it was the best round ever.

He also enjoyed mowing and blowing with his John Deere tractor and always kept his yard in good shape. He played tennis in his early years, liked croquet, playing pool and a good game of Euchre. He drove Chevy pick-ups and was a Bills fan. He was one of the first in our area to own and ride a snowmobile. His favorite dog Bosley followed him no matter how deep the snow was. He was a member of the Snow Drifters snowmobile club.

Most importantly, he loved family get-togethers, having a beer and good conversations.

This is my tribute in loving memory of my brother Bobby.

The 181st Erie County Fair honored veterans and active military during its daily "Flag Retreat Ceremony" at Slade Park.

During the ceremony, an American flag was lowered and folded by an honorary honor guard. The flag, which was flown during that day at the Fair was presented to a veteran and/ or active member of the military who was named "Flag Retreat Honoree of the Day." The Erie County Fair Marching Band performed the "Star Spangled Banner" and more. On August 18th, 2021 the chosen Flag Retreat Honoree of the Day was Paul Lawton of North Collins, NY. The retreat was conducted by Newell Faulkner Eden American Legion Post 880.

Paul Lawton has served North Collins as Town Councilman and Town Supervisor. He coordinates the North Collins Red Cross Blood drives and has served Meals on Wheels for 20 years. Paul has very actively served as a fireman between North Collins and Langford Fire Companies for 62 years. Thursday, October 14, 2021, while meeting at the Eden Town Hall, members of the EGSC were paid a visit by Terry Skura as she “flew” into the meeting dressed in witch’s garb and carrying an authentic witch’s stick. A member of the Orchard Park Garden Club and Eighth District chair of the Honor Roll Program, Terry lectured on the customs and lures of Halloween and the different kinds of witches and beliefs descending through the ages. Among the ancient sorcery, wearing black helped to keep the evil spirits away. Herbs, including marigolds, and potions were another important part of the sorcery and practices. Gardening enthusiasts were particularly interested in learning the waning moon is the time to plant your bulbs.

The popular seasonal topic of Halloween and practices of Witchery was stumbled upon by Ms. Skura when, as a garden club member, was asked to lecture on ancient herbs. Research led to a seasonally delightful presentation.

Hemlock St: Traveling toward Main St., you see a Cabinet Shop. This site used to be the Eden Memorial Studio. Hank Wear and his partner Jack Rivas made and sold many grave stones. You can see their work in the Eden Evergreen Cemetery. I had a monument made by them, I enjoyed doing business with them. Prior to the Studio being on this site, it was the Gumtow Lumber Yard, having been bought from Dan Dickman Planing Mill. It was said(Doris Anderson's History), that Harold Gumtow built the original grandstand at the Hamburg Fair Grounds. Also Mrs Anderson said that in 1913 the Lumber yard caught on fire, sending sparks to properties on Green Street, completely destroying the Old Baptist Church building that had been moved from East Church St. to Green St., in 1896, and turned into a store that was run by Dan Dickman. Later a house was moved from the Welch property on North Main St., to where the Baptist Church building used to be on Green St. There may of been one other building destroyed in that fire. The Mangus's lived next door.
