A dedication ceremony was held on September 12, 2021 to honor the contributions of Donald Schasel to the Eden-North Collins Food Pantry. Don had a lifelong passion of providing comfort and food to the hungry. He spearheaded a years-long drive to erect a building that could distribute food to the members of the community who needed help. Construction of the Eden-North Collins Food Pantry at 2059 Franklin Street, North Collins was the end result of Don's leadership, vision and persistence. Don, along with his wife Rosella, was actively involved with the pantry until Don's passing in January of 2020. Erie County Legislator John Mills shared his memories with a crowd that included Don's family and many friends.

Volunteer Fire Department FIRE PREVENTION WEEK Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage. This horrific conflagration killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance, making it the longest-running public health observance in our country. During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in case of a fire. Firefighters provide lifesaving public education in an effort to drastically decrease casualties caused by fires.

BE WARM AND SAFE THIS WINTER! There is something about the winter months and curling up with a good book by the fireplace. But did you know that heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths? With a few simple safety tips and precautions you can prevent most heating fires from happening.

• Keep anything that can burn at least three-feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, replace, wood stove, or portable space heater.

• Have a three-foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heaters.

• Never use your oven to heat your home.

• Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer’s instructions.

• Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.

• Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.

• Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters.

• Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.

• Test smoke alarms at least once a month.

HEATING EQUIPMENT SMARTS Install wood burning stoves following manufacturer’s instructions or have a professional do the installation. All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside to avoid carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

Install and maintain CO alarms to avoid the risk of CO poisoning. If you smell gas in your gas heater, do not light the appliance. Leave the home immediately and call your local fire department or gas company.

• Create a fire escape plan with your family, reviewing and practicing it twice a year.

• Your fire escape plan should include two exit points from every room, as well as a designated outdoor meeting spot.

• Make sure everyone in your family knows when and how to call 911 or the fire department.

PREVENT • Turn off portable heaters when you leave a room or go to sleep.

• Never leave a candle burning unattended, and consider replacing traditional candles with battery-operated flameless versions.

• Keep matches and lighters out of reach from children, and make sure they know never to play with these items.

• Replace or repair loose plugs, exposed wiring or frayed extension cords, and avoid overloading outlets and extension cords.

• Keep any items that can catch fire at least three feet away from cooking and heating devices.

• Remain in the kitchen when cooking food. Always turn off the stove if you leave the kitchen even for a brief period of time.

STAY ALIVE • In the event of a fire, yell “Fire” repeatedly and evacuate immediately. Once outside, call 911 or the fire department, and never reenter a burning building for any reason.

• If a door or door handle feels warm to the touch, do not open it. Use an alternate escape route.

•If you must walk through smoke, get as close to the ground as possible to escape under the smoke, closing doors behind you.

• If your clothing catches fire, always remember to stop, drop and roll, covering your face with your hands.

• If you can’t escape a room, close the door and cover vents and door cracks with a towel or cloth to keep out smoke. Call 911 or the fire department, and signal for help at the window with a piece of cloth or a flashlight.

• If you are unable to reach pets or someone in the home needing assistance, evacuate, call 911 and tell the emergency operator and firefighters where the person or pet is located.

It’s early Saturday morning, studying a garage sale map. Planning out the route, it stays on the rider’s lap. Seeking out the best bargains, the buyers begin to chat. One location has this, another is offering that.

They have to get early, to get chance at the deals. It doesn’t matter how many miles, may be put on their wheels. Arriving at the site, the buyer must show their skill. The primary goal of the day is to break the sellers will. Taking a look around, acting like you could care less. Even though you’re interested, try to make the seller guess. They say one man’s trash, is another man’s treasure. Getting the cheapest price brings buyers the greatest pleasure. The ultimate goal, of a bargain hunter’s spree. Walking away with the item you chose and getting it for free.

Local Nursing Student Visits Bolivia

Breanna Dye, biology student at Genesee Community College, took a 10-day trip to Bolivia with a team of doctors, nurses, and medical students this past July. The team ran a medical clinic in Santa Cruz, one of the most populous cities in this South America nation. They treated over 1,000 patients with a wide variety of needs, from high blood pressure to broken bones, to much more serious emergencies that had to be taken to a local hospital. They further treated hundreds of Covid patients.

Each person who came for treatment was also counselled for their spiritual needs.

Many of them had these spiritual needs met by putting their faith in Jesus Christ.

Erie County Legislator John Mills recently honored the Town of Collins as it celebrates its bicentennial anniversary. Legislator Mills presented the Town of Collins Board of Directors with a proclamation to recognize the significance of the anniversary.

The Town of Collins is one of 25 towns in Erie County and was formed on March 16, 1821 after being split from the Town of Concord to the east and again in November 1852 with the creation of North Collins. Today, the Town of Collins consists of approximately 62 square miles bordered on the south by Zoar Valley and to the west by the Seneca Nation of Indians and includes a large part of the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation.

The Town of Collins’ population as of 2021 is 6,464 with 1,672 household and the primary industry is farming. Legislator Mills said, “The Town of Collins is a hidden gem within Erie County with plenty of hiking areas, destination spots, scenic views and farm fresh foods. I want to congratulate the Town of Collins officials from past and present and its great residents for building the area to what it is today.”

It’s not an easy thing to do. In fact, sometimes differing thoughts will never be understood. But attempting to understand can prevent differences in viewpoint from being needlessly distorted and, at the very least, it would be a worthy start toward better understanding.
