Erie County Fair Spells Success For Lawtons Progressors 4 – H Club

The 2022 Erie County Fair was a successful one for the 19 members of the Lawtons Progressors 4 – H Club. Many of thew youth were awarded for their efforts in the 4 – H Youth Development Building and the Livestock Program.

In the Youth Development Building members received Special Awards sponsored by individuals, organizations, and businesses. In the Cloverbud Division for youth 5 – 7 years of age, Kylie Gray of Orchard Park was recognized in the 7year old category for her sewing tote bag. Danica Niefergold of Springville was honored for her Community Service Report outlining her volunteer efforts during the 2021 – 2022 program year. Recognized was Benjamin Timmel of Collins for his recycled bird house using a n old license plate for a roof. In the Wood Science Department Wyatt Timmel of Collins was honored with the Best Overall Wood Science Project for his gun rack. In addition, a club display created by Madison and Mitchell Kehr of Lawtons and Benjamin Timmel was presented the Special Award for the Best Overall Club Display.

With returning to normalcy, the 4 – H Youth Development Program could select and enter exhibits in the New York State Fair. Due to their high quality of workmanship and skill level several members had exhibits chosen including Natalie Gabel of Lawtons, whose sewing box was selected to represent the Cloverbud Division. In addition, as a Cloverbud, Kylie Gray had her ceramic piece chosen. Haley Kehr of Lawtons had her zucchini selected to be entered. Madison Kehr had her machine sewn pillow and painted pig doorstop chosen. Her brother, Mitchell’s American eagle paver doorstop and a wood turned baseball bat was selected. In the Livestock Program members were recognized with awards in several different species. Leah Gabel of Lawtons received two dairy recognitions, which included Junior Champion Jersey and Second Place in the Queen of the Milky Way Contest. The Champion Commercial Breed Dairy Goat was earned by Miranda Gabel of Lawtons. Christopher and Conner Woloszyn of Arcade excelled in the Llama Limbo Contest. Christopher placed third in the Dressing Contest as the Lion King and did well in the Alpaca Show. In the Poultry Department Madison Kehr was honored with the Commended Market Bird. Danica Niefergold earned Grand Champion, and her brother, Jack, was recognized as Highly Commended in the Roaster Division. For the Swine Program Leah Gabel was selected as the Junior Reserve Market Showman. In the Dressing Contest Senior Division, Grace Gabel received First Place as Flounder the Pig. In the Junior Division of the Dressing Contest, Danica, Jack, and William Niefergold were awarded First Place as 4 – H Mermaids. The Herdsmen Award was given to the Kehr Family (Haley, Madison, and Mitchell), and the Niefero9lds (Danica, Jack, and William). Grace Gabel was honored with the Joe Smith Can Do Award for her overall effort. The entire Kehr Family also received the Franny Gernatt Award.

It should be noted that the club was recognized by the 4 – H Alumni Association in the 4 – H Youth Development Building for celebrating its 80th Anniversary.

The success of this year’s fair for the members is preparing them for greater participation at the 2023 Erie County Fair.

Paul Michael Kuebler Jr.

Paul Michael Kuebler Jr. of Rockingham, North Carolina formally of Hamburg, NY passed away during Covid on Wednesday, November 18, 2020. He was 72. Son of the late Paul Michael Kuebler, Sr. and Annette Marie Smith Kuebler. Paul was an Eagle Scout with Troop 508, a graduate in the Class of 1966 of Saint Francis High School and a 1977 graduate of Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, NC. He served in US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and was a two-time Purple Heart recipient as a Vietnam Veteran. He worked for the NC Highway Patrol and NC Department of Transportation for 30 years. Also, he was an active member of St. James Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Parents without Partners, and VFW Post 4203. Paul was a master mason and served his community as a small engine repairman after retirement. He served as an oﬃcer in multiple community organizations and donated to charities that made a difference in his local community and globally. Surviving, a daughter, Christine Renee Kuebler Albright and husband Jeff of Climax, NC; Grandchildren, Mary Jane Elizabeth, Emily Renee and Michael Ray Ellis, all of Climax, NC; Siblings, Jean Ayers (Mark), Barbara Ortel, Donna Harper (Benny), Sharon Washer (late husband Luther), Gerald Kuebler (Elizabeth) and Lisa Nelson (John); Several Nieces and nephews and great nieces and nieces and nephews; And his companion Beverly Thackson; and his dog companion Buddy. His ashes will be buried with his late nephew (Dustin Washer). A military graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, October 1, 2022 at Scio Fairlawn Cemetery, 4056 State Route 19, Scio, NY 14880. Memorials can be made to the Richmon Co. I Remember When by R. Ferris Randall

In 1943 I was pumping gas and changing the oil and greasing cars and trucks at Nobbs and Williams garage on Green St in Eden.

I was surprised when I was taken to the Art Kraft Trucking business located on Gowanda State Road (Route 62) near Jerusalem Rd and was allowed to drive one of the Large Cab Over Engine Trucks back to the garage. There were at least 6 Kraft boys then, Oscar, Edward, Arthur, George, John and Walter. John lost his life in World War Two on August 4, 1944. Pictured here is John's picture. His brother's, Edward, George and Walter were also in the service at that time.
