The National Red Ribbon Campaign is the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation reaching millions of young people during Red Ribbon Week, October 23-31 each year. Students in the Eden Elementary School wore mustaches on Thursday, October 26, 2017. The theme that day was " I Mustache You Not To Do Drugs!" Pictured is Mrs. Malkowski's 6th grade homeroom. ________

Justin Weiskerger of Eden Helps Medaille College Men's Soccer Team Earn AMCC Title

The Medaille College Mavericks men's soccer team, including Justin Weiskerger of Eden, finished the 2017 season with the College's seventh Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championship and a spot in the NCAA Division III Tournament. Medaille earned the AMCC title with an overtime victory over the Penn-State Behrend Lions on November 4. The victory ensured an appearance in the NCCA Tournament against the No. 10 ranked Otterbein University Cardinals. Otterbein defeated Medaille, 2-0, in the game held in Westerville, OH, on November 11. ________

During World War II, the town of Brant like many communities across the United States, posted a “Roll of Honor” as a reminder of the sacrifices being made by members of our own local community courageously serving in the United States armed forces. Signs such as these, helped each of us to keep these brave and selfless persons in our thoughts and prayers. This particular honor roll was prominently displayed at the town of Brant four corners. Sadly, at the time this photo was taken, two men from our township had perished serving our country as designated by the stars following their names: Samuel Battaglia and Edward Stuehring.

Let us never forget the sacrifices of our local heroes and their families. To all those who for us gave the ultimate sacrifice, may they rest in peace. For ensuring our safety and defending our nation and freedoms, we are eternally grateful and indebted to all who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. military.

Geraldine Kirst Celebrates 100th Birthday

Geraldine Julia Wittmeyer, or Gerry as she would be called, was born in 1917 in East Eden, NY to William & Lena Wittmeyer. Gerry grew up in Clarksburg as one of 4 girls.

Without a boy, her dad always took Gerry with him to help with barn chores. He always told her, “I saved you from doing kitchen work,” which was ok with her because she hated to cook. She graduated from Eden Central High School with the Class of 1936. While at the high school, she enjoyed playing the saxophone in the orchestra and the marching band. She even marched in the Eden Fireman's Parade. During the Depression era, she dated Ray Kirst. Since there wasn't much money for fancy dates, they enjoyed outdoor activities.

In the summer, they rode bicycles and played tennis. In the winter, they went cross country skiing. They even occasionally skied by light of the moon. The light of the romantic moon must have worked because Gerry married Ray Kirst in 1941. It was a good first year. By 1942, their only son, Paul, was born. When WWII started, Ray was drafted into the army. Eventually he was stationed at the Pentagon. Then he sent for Gerry and Paul to come and live with him in Army housing in Arlington VA. 1945 was a good year for everyone – including Gerry who had her first daughter, Pat. After the war, they returned to Eden. There they built their home and resided in it for 67 years!

Ray and Gerry had their 3rd child, Kathy, in 1950. She was married to Ray for 72 years.

Their marriage produced 3 children, 4 grandchildren & 7 great grandchildren. Gerry was more than a wife; she was also one of Ray’s fishing buddies. Sometimes, she was the one who came home with bragging rights! Ray and Gerry drove their RV cross-country to the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and even Florida. They also managed to visit relatives along the way. Ray and Gerry were very active in scouting. Gerry was a Den Mother. Gerry is a member of the Altar & Rosary Society at Immaculate Conception church. After 100 years, Gerry still lives in Eden, NY and has no desire to move anywhere else.

Happy Anniversary Jim, My Love I’m writing this to let you know I love & miss you. We would have celebrated our 68th anniversary November 19th 2017, but together 69 years before you passed. We were good together. You made me happy and kept me laughing a lot. You always looked forward to the turkey feast at Thanksgiving. It was your favorite month of the year so you could have a 22lb-24lb turkey for 2 people. You let me have a few days of it, but then the rest was all yours and gone in 5 days. Memories make me happy, but grief is something we experience because we love, and love is a memory no one can take from us.

Phyllis Miller Albee

Patricia J. Kobel (nee Funk) of Boston, NY passed away comfortably in her home after a short illness on November 8, 2017.

Beloved wife of the late Richard T. Kobel Sr. Sister of Mary (John) Melnyk, Bernice (William) Krueger, James (June) Funk and Herbert (Shirley) Funk.

Mother of nine children: Patricia Smolinski (Daniel), Elizabeth Lockwood (Glenn), Kevin Kobel (Sharon), Richard T. Kobel Jr. (Linda), Carolyn Webster, Robert Kobel (Sherry), Sheila Geist (Peter), Janice Pearson (Kevin) and the late Kenneth R. Kobel. Patricia is also survived by her loving grandchildren: Daniel (Vanessa), Debra, Kristin, Jeffrey (Kayleen), Nicole, Robert, Kimberly (Frank), Julia, Kristopher, Richard (Kristen), Benjamin, Alexander in addition to 4 great granchdildren and step grandchildren. Patricia is also survived by many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Phyllis Miller Albee of Elmira, NY passed away on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at age 77. Phyllis was born July 16, 1940 in Eden, NY, the daughter of the late Lawrence C. Miller and Margaret Wohlhueter Miller.

She was also predeceased by her twin brothers, Robert and William Miller. Her surviving spouse of 57 years is Robert C. Albee III. Phyllis attended Albright Art School and University of Buffalo. She received her degree in Applied Science and her RN at Corning Community College. Phyllis worked as a nurse at Arnot Ogden Medical Center, and for Dr. Brent Olmstead. She set a wonderful example as a wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and caregiver. Phyllis gave back to her community by volunteering at numerous organizations: Elmira Junior League, Jayncees, Thursday Morning Musicals, 4H, Camp Iroquois Bd., SPCA Bd., teaching portrait drawing at Booth Elementary School, and Sunday school at Park Church.

Phyllis is survived by her children, Robert C. “Robbie” Albee IV of Elmira, Lawrence M. “Larry” (Yvonne) Albee of Hammondsport, Christine “Chrisi” (Dr. William) Naber of Cincinnati, OH; grandchildren, Shawn (Heather) Flynn of Jacksonville, FL, with daughter Azlynn; Heather (Jason) Wood of San Antonio, TX, with children, Aiden, Alexis, Tim, Nick and Michael; William “Buddy”, Robert, Megan, Grace, and Sarah Naber of Cincinnati; sisters, Joyce M. (Joseph) Caggiano of Williamsville, NY, Lois M. Miller of Cape Coral, FL; nephew Timothy Patrick Hayes of Richmond, VA; and many close cousins. Phyllis enjoyed gardening, decorating, card games, and living at Keuka Lake. She loved to spend time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who never failed to bring a smile to her face. She was so proud of each and every one of them and will be fondly missed and affectionately remembered for being a honest and devoted grandma. Phyllis thanks her doctors, for their care, and her faithful family and many friends for being there when she needed them. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 24, 2017, 12:00 noon, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Elmira. Phyllis will be laid to rest on Saturday, November 25, 2017, 12:00 noon, at the Colden, NY cemetery. HEAP Home Energy Assistance Program

Applications for Home Energy Assistance Program (“HEAP”) regular benefits will be accepted beginning Monday, November 13, 2017 and Erie County’s Department of Social Services (“DSS”) anticipates receiving high numbers. The HEAP program is scheduled to run through March 15, 2018 but households are encouraged to apply sooner rather than later. To expedite the application process and to save residents from standing in long lines, HEAP applicants are encouraged to apply for benefits online rather than make a trip to the downtown HEAP office.

“With a heavy application day anticipated for Monday’s opening, we are urging residents with heat service currently on and without a shut off notice to file HEAP applications online at www.mybenefits.ny.gov or by calling the HEAP Application Request Line at 858-1969.

Additionally, HEAP outreach events are available for residents to sign up for this benefit at various locations in the community,” said Karen Rybicki, DSS Assistant Deputy Commissioner. A calendar detailing outreach events can be found on the Erie County Social Services website.

Regular HEAP is a benefit designed to decrease a household’s energy costs. Regular benefits are available both to households paying separately for heat and to households who make undesignated payments for heat in the form of rent. Eligible households whose primary heat is electricity or natural gas can receive a $350 regular benefit. Households using a different heating source or that have heating costs included as part of their rent may receive a larger or smaller amount. Last season, over 100,000 HEAP benefits were authorized to Erie County households.

Regular HEAP eligibility and benefits are based on income, household size, primary heating source and the presence of a vulnerable household member who is under age 6, is age 60 or older, or is permanently disabled. An eligible household may receive one regular HEAP benefit per program year. Households currently receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (“TANF”) and/or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (“SNAP”) benefits may qualify for an automatic basic HEAP benefit and would not be required to file a separate application. Households may ascertain the status of an Auto Pay by calling the HEAP Hotline at 858-7644.

In order to qualify for a regular HEAP benefit, the members of the household must be citizens of the United States or qualified aliens with gross monthly income at or below the amount per household size listed in the table below: 2017-2018 HEAP Benefit Gross Monthly Income Guidelines: Household Size/ Maximum Gross Monthly Income: 1/$2,318; 2/$3,031; 3/$3,744; 4/$4,457; 5/$5,170; 6/$5,883; 7/$6,017; 8/$6,150; 9/$6,284; 10/$6,418 The Heating Equipment Repair and Replacement benefit component, available to help eligible lowincome homeowners repair or replace furnaces, boilers and other direct heating equipment necessary to keep the home’s primary heating source functional, opened on November 6, 2017. HEAP Emergency Benefits for households whose main source of heat is natural gas or electricity can be applied for beginning January 2, 2018. ________
