Une normalité rassurante et vivifiante

THE END OF A CHALLENGING SCHOOL YEAR is in sight. To all the teachers, EAs, support staff, principals, school superintendents, school board employees, and trustees who worked so hard to adapt to shifting conditions and requirements and keep students both safe and learning – thank you!

And I know, it’s not over yet. But we have reason to think that we will start the new school year, in most places, with a return to many of the pre-pandemic aspects of schooling. We’re not out of the woods, but we’re getting there.

So it’s time to take stock of what we’ve learned, and ask: How will things be different when we return to school in the fall? How can we deal with post-pandemic challenges? In “Learning Our Way Out of the Pandemic” (p. 23), Karen Mundy and Kelly Gallagher sum up global lessons on the impacts of school shutdowns on students and ways to alleviate them.

We also need to consider where we are aiming to land. Is the goal to return to the status quo, or is this the time to address the inequities exposed and exacerbated by the pandemic, and strengthen our education system’s ability to prepare all students to thrive in the rapidly changing world that awaits them? There’s a reason this issue’s theme is “Back to Normal?” with a question mark. Not everyone is convinced that normal was all that great. In this issue, Christine Younghusband (p. 19) argues that now, more than ever, we need to intentionally make space for students to exercise agency in their education. Sarah Leung and her team (p. 26) share a model for inviting more meaningful parent participation in school life and decisionmaking, while two prominent Canadian education thinkers, Charles Pascal and Paul Bennett, present their differing visions for what our educational priorities should be in the coming school year (“Plotting a Post-Pandemic Course for Public Education” (p. 13).

As you read through the magazine, don’t overlook the valuable web-exclusive articles on our website! In this issue, Danielle LapointeMcEwan and her colleagues discuss challenges and strategies for formative assessment of online or blended learning in “Navigating New Territory.” John Chan and Nicholas White present an effective program to support students with reading difficulties (“Overcoming Reading Deficits,”), while Susan Drake and Joanne Reid describe their “Story Model,” a way for students to broaden their understanding of an issue and then create their own vision for a positive future outcome.

À MESURE QUE LES TEMPS CHANGENT, les élèves en sont venus, avec raison, à augmenter leurs attentes quant à la qualité de leur éducation. Certes, ils veulent un sentiment de sécurité, ils comptent avoir du plaisir et aiment socialiser à l’école et, de plus en plus, s’attendent à des activités signifiantes, motivantes pour leur avenir, mais aussi utiles dans leur vie de tous les jours. La tâche s’avère imposante pour les artisans du système scolaire qui s’appliquent à se donner les moyens de répondre aux attentes des jeunes et de leur offrir une éducation digne de leur époque.

Dans ce numéro qui porte sur « la normalité » post-pandémique, Janick Cloutier et Nathalie Couzon (p. 35) expliquent comment les élèves qui avaient déjà développé leurs compétences essentielles ont été plus forts durant la crise sanitaire. Marius Bourgeoys (p.

46) rappelle l’urgence de miser sur l’humanisation pour arriver à améliorer le monde des jeunes et leur société. Émilie Doutreloux et Alexandra Auclair (p. 38) offrent des pistes d’action et martèlent les incontournables changements qu’il faut apporter pour cesser toute forme d’exclusion existante et accueillir la diversité dans toutes ses dimensions à l’école.

Il y a consensus : le personnel scolaire a besoin de formation pour façonner une normalité moderne à l’école. Dans nos pages, Maxime Pelchat (p. 44) offre un schéma opérationnel visant à présenter les diverses formes de perfectionnement professionnel pour les acteurs scolaires désireux de rester à l’affût des nouveautés diverses, incluant le numérique et… le maintien de leur santé. Kevin Roy (p. 42) présente la perspective des parents qui ne se contentent pas d’un rôle de spectateurs dans la nouvelle normalité à créer; ils sont conscients de leur responsabilité de co-éduquer. Ils souhaitent réellement contribuer à maintenir le filet de sécurité que représente l’école, un milieu qui, selon leur vision, encadre et soutient les jeunes de façon responsable et équitable.

Le terme « normalité » en attire certains avec raison; le système scolaire a été fortement déstabilisé et un peu de routine pourrait sembler apaisant. Le même terme en repousse d’autres; ceux et celles qui considèrent que l’on progresse davantage lorsqu’on est déstabilisés. Le temps est peut-être propice de définir ce que nous entendons par une normalité saine en contexte scolaire. Laissonsnous inspirer par les auteurs et autrices de ce numéro et par la brise rafraichissante du printemps pour imaginer un retour à la normale tant rassurant que vivifiant. ÉC

2.0 Introducing Well at Work 2.0 André Rebeiz is Research Manager for the EdCan Network and Project Lead for the Well at Work initiative. He leads implementation of research projects, knowledge tools, events, and awareness campaigns to effect system-wide policy and practice evolutions in Canadian K–12 education in line with EdCan’s strategic priorities.

Solutions to reduce stress and burnout among K-12 staff K–12 STAFF EXPERIENCE chronic stress and burnout at a greater rate than in other professions. This not only impacts their own health, but also their students’ well-being and academic success, all while leading to significant costs for school districts, reduced workplace morale, and leadership recruitment challenges. With the extra stress of the pandemic, schools and school districts are looking for ways to support their staff now more than ever, and they require solutions that will address underlying problems such as heavy workloads and toxic workplace cultures.

Since 2019, EdCan has been leading an awarenessbuilding platform called Well at Work to increase knowledge about the need to make K–12 staff well-being a top policy and investment priority. Since then, our organization has built a network of Canadian educators, researchers, practitioners, and stakeholder groups who are passionate about and dedicated to advancing K–12 workplace well-being.

From 2021–2023, EdCan will continue to build awareness, while shifting its main focus toward catalyzing action with a wide variety of partners through Well at Work 2.0. Through a non-prescriptive approach, education leaders across Canada who are ready to take action will be supported to develop and implement individual, organizational, and systemic strategies to improve K–12 workplace well-being through four key solutions: 1. Professional learning for school district leaders, principals, and wellness leads on actionable strategies to measure, implement, and evaluate comprehensive approaches to K–12 workplace well-being.

2. A coaching platform for school and district leaders and teams to improve their own personal wellness while receiving guidance to embed mental well-being

for all staff into their district’s culture, priorities, and structures.

3. Facilitated provincial and pan-Canadian hubs to convene and connect stakeholders to advance issues related to workplace well-being and align their efforts to achieve them, including communities of practice for teachers and staff to provide them with a community of support and facilitate peer learning through sharing best practices.

4. An economic study of the costs of K–12 staff stress and burnout, and the benefits of investing in positive mental health and well-being to offset these costs. A service for school districts will also be provided that compiles and analyzes their workplace well-being data in a cost-benefit report.

EdCan is grateful for the 75 stakeholders who generously shared their time, expertise, and perspectives in conceptualizing these programs. We look forward to working together to build capacity and coordinate impact among education leaders to enable them to develop their own context-specific solutions, which will sustain our collective efforts in the long-term. Depuis 2019, le Réseau ÉdCan dirige une plateforme de sensibilisation appelée Bien dans mon travail afin de souligner la nécessité de faire du bienêtre du personnel scolaire une priorité absolue en matière de politiques et d’investissement. Depuis, notre organisme élargit son réseau et compte des membres en éducation, en recherche ainsi que des représentants de groupes canadiens qui se consacrent à améliorer le bienêtre des employés des écoles primaires et secondaires.

De 2021 à 2023, ÉdCan poursuivra ses initiatives de sensibilisation, mais s’efforcera surtout de catalyser ses interventions de concert avec une grande variété de partenaires de la plateforme Bien dans mon travail 2.0. À l’aide d’une approche non directive, les dirigeants et dirigeantes du milieu scolaire de tout le Canada qui sont prêts à passer à l’action bénéficieront de soutien afin d’élaborer et de mettre en œuvre des stratégies individuelles, organisationnelles et systémiques pour améliorer le bienêtre du personnel de la maternelle jusqu’à la fin du secondaire. Quatre solutions sont mises de l’avant : 1. Perfectionnement professionnel pour les responsables des conseils scolaires et centres de services, les directions d’école et les intervenants et intervenantes en milieu scolaire afin de développer des stratégies concrètes pour mesurer, mettre en œuvre et évaluer des approches globales du bienêtre du personnel.

2. Plateforme d’accompagnement pour les leaders, les équipes des écoles, des conseils scolaires et centres de services afin d’améliorer leur propre bienêtre, tout en recevant des conseils visant à intégrer

les bienfaits de la santé mentale pour tout le personnel, selon la culture, les priorités et la structure de leur milieu.

3. Carrefours provinciaux et pancanadiens visant à réunir et à mettre en contact les parties prenantes afin de faire progresser les questions de bienêtre en milieu de travail et de coordonner leurs efforts pour y parvenir. Cela comprend des communautés de pratique qui offriront au personnel scolaire différentes sources de soutien et favoriseront l’apprentissage entre pairs grâce au partage des pratiques exemplaires.

4. Étude économique sur les coûts du stress et de l’épuisement professionnel du personnel du primaire et du secondaire, et sur les avantages d’investir dans la santé mentale et le bienêtre pour compenser ces coûts. Les conseils scolaires et centres de services auront aussi accès à un service qui compilera et analysera les données sur le bienêtre au travail dans un rapport évaluant les coûts et les bénéfices. ÉdCan remercie les 75 parties prenantes qui ont généreusement consacré du temps pour faire part de leur expertise et de leurs perspectives pendant l’élaboration de ces solutions. Nous sommes impatients de collaborer à nouveau pour accroître la capacité du réseau et coordonner les efforts des leaders du milieu scolaire, leur permettant ainsi de concevoir des actions adaptées à leur contexte qui soutiendront les efforts collectifs à long terme. Is All Play Created Equal?

The case for structured play in early math learning Alexandra (Sandy) Youmans, PhD, OCT, is Adjunct Assistant Professor of Elementary Mathematics at the Faculty of Education, Queen’s University. She is a former Kindergarten teacher and the co-lead of the Critical Transitions in Early Math Community of Practice through the Math Knowledge Network.

Edward Schroeter, BJ, BEd, OCT, has worked for Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board since 1992. A Kindergarten teacher specializing in early geometry, spatial sense, and coding, he is the lead author of the Grade 1 Ontario Math Curriculum Resource Project (2020–21), Roots of Coding (2021), and Nelson Math Grade K (2018).

PLAY: IT’S A WORD most people use without much forethought. We have all engaged in play at some point in our life, so we know what it is, right? Yet this seemingly simple word is more complex than we first imagined.

Picture a young child playing with blocks. The child uses the blocks to build a tower. As the child adds blocks to the top of the tower, it becomes less stable and eventually tumbles to the floor. At this point, the child either becomes frustrated and gives up or perseveres and tries again. If block building persists, it is highly unlikely that the child will instinctively establish the wide tower base needed for stability; prior knowledge about structures would be needed for this. You see, in young children most child-directed play involves what they already know; it is assimilative in nature (Piaget, 1962). This brings into question the widely held belief that children must be learning if they are playing. Perhaps, but how can they learn new, more challenging concepts by using knowledge and skills they already possess?

To distinguish regular play from educational play, The Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC) uses the term “play-based learning,” which is “intentional” and “purposeful” play (CMEC, 2012). Play-based learning is seen as different from regular play because it has specific learning objectives, requiring educators to structure the learning within play. There are three main ways educators

can structure play to promote new learning: • introduce vocabulary and ideas during play • present a play challenge • use structured activities and games.

There is growing awareness of the importance of developing strong early math skills in young children. Not only is math learning cumulative, but early math skills predict future math and academic achievement (Duncan et al., 2007). However, many primary teachers and early childhood educators lack knowledge about early math education and development (Youmans et al., 2018), do not feel comfortable teaching math (Germeroth & Sarama, 2017), and may be afraid to interfere in children’s play (Pyle & Danniels, 2016). There is clearly a need for early math-focused training that is tailored to suit the needs of classroom educators.

Children’s spontaneous play can involve explicit math content, like numbers and patterns. However, it is unlikely that new math learning will occur without intentional instruction. To support early math development, educators of young children need to plan for and prioritize math learning (Ginsburg et al., 2008). This can be done by “mathematizing” the learning environment with playful materials, tools, and activities that support math understanding (Clements & Sarama, 2013). Ultimately, structured play is ideal for building a solid early math foundation because it capitalizes on children’s natural curiosity, while incorporating targeted learning objectives.

Educators can effectively promote early math learning by structuring math play in three key ways: 1. Use playful math tasks to introduce vocabulary and ideas. One of the most important steps educators can take to mathematize play is to introduce materials www.edcan.ca/magazine

and tools that promote mathematical understanding (e.g. pattern blocks, pentominoes, relational rods, linking cubes, number paths, tens frames).

After students have a chance to explore a material, educators should present a playful task and engage in meaningful interactions with their students (e.g. encourage the use of math vocabulary, ask questions that prompt student thinking and help them communicate their understanding). For example, pattern block puzzles (shown above) can be used to build children’s visualization skills and geometric understanding. In this playful task, students are asked to match pattern blocks with their shape outlines, as educators model the use of geometric vocabulary (vertices, sides, rotation, shape names) and discuss strategies students use for matching pattern blocks with the appropriate outlines (shape discrimination and rotation). To extend learning, pattern block puzzles that require multiple shapes (two or more) to fit into one space can be used.

2. Present math play challenges to deepen students’ conceptual understanding.

Young students are far more capable of mathematical understanding than previously thought and can engage with complex mathematical concepts with sustained attention (Bruce et al., 2016). Presenting students with a math play challenge encourages them to work with different ideas and make connections among them.

One early math play challenge involves asking students to represent a number, like the number 7, using two sets of coloured linking cubes, in as many ways as possible (two blue cubes and five red cubes, one blue cube and six red cubes, and so on). This math play challenge helps students develop a greater understanding of the value a number represents and the multiple ways in which it can be composed.

3. Use structured math activities and games to promote automaticity. The more frequently young students engage with structured math activities and games, the more automatic their early math skills become.

The activity of having students match quantity cards (pictures of small sets of objects represented as dots, fingers, frames, etc., shown right) with their corresponding numbers helps promote numerical knowledge. Dice games help students learn to subitize numbers (recognize the number of items in a group without counting), and playing dominoes can support student learning of basic addition facts. Moreover, using activities and games to promote automaticity in math is a great alternative to “drill and kill” worksheets that www.edcan.ca/magazine

tend to leave students feeling unsuccessful and demotivated.

THERE IS LITTLE DOUBT that early mathematics plays a critical role in promoting future math and school success. At the same time, many Kindergarten teachers and early childhood educators are illequipped to teach mathematics and are, understandably, uncomfortable with doing so. Structured math play is ideal for supporting early math learning because it promotes student engagement and targets important foundational skills. EC

IF ONLY ONE TEACHER had said this to me – or even just a handful – I would not be writing this article.

However, over the course of the past 12 months, and especially the last six, I have heard these statements from teachers so consistently and with such frequency that I cannot help but see a bigger pattern emerging.

As a psychotherapist, I have been privileged to support many educators in finding ways to maintain their mental health amid personal struggles, strikes, resource management issues, and changes in job expectations.

Prior to the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, many reported feeling an understandable sense of burnout and frustration, but always present in each session was a very palpable love and devotion to their occupation as teacher.

Things are different now.

In the clients I see, the educators and administrators I speak with, and the articles I search through for a sign I

Educators, like other front-line workers, have been asked to face the challenges and changes brought on by the pandemic while helping others do the same. But at what cost? Is there more that can be done to shine a light on the potential risks for teachers? While the COVID-19 pandemic is a new obstacle for the world, research on the mental health impact on front-line workers during crisis situations is plentiful and clearly details the hazards of prolonged exposure to heightened stress. With such risks landing on the shoulders of those who care for our children, it is imperative that educators are provided with the information and supports needed to protect their mental well-being. Without a true understanding of the risks they face, educators cannot protect themselves against the long-term consequences of pandemic teaching.

Mental-health risks to teachers

My intention is not to encourage teachers to abandon their post, but instead to renew their commitment to their craft in a way that is informed and intentional. It is also to provide a look at the very real risks of continuing to ignore their mental health as they try to meet the ever-changing demands of pandemic learning.

Here are the top three psychological risks teachers currently face: 1. Compassion fatigue If you ask anyone about a teacher they remember fondly, they tell you how they felt cared for. It is a hallmark of some of the world’s greatest teachers. The ability to connect with children, be present to their needs (not always academic in nature), and leave them feeling seen and valued every single day takes an incredible amount of patience and energy. Patience and energy come from a rested, well nourished (physically and emotionally), healthy human being.

The pandemic restricted access to many resilienceenhancing factors that help teachers stay healthy, such as social connection, supportive routines, and a sense of safety and security. As the demands on educators increased, the opportunities for reset and restoration quickly dried up. The result: compassion fatigue.

Compassion fatigue is a psychological response to existing in a continual state of burnout for an extended period. The act of caring and connecting is costly to a www.edcan.ca/magazine

nervous system that is running out of energy, so to protect us, our brain creates emotional distance from those in our charge. This is well documented in health-care professions, but discussed less in reference to our educational system.

Compassion fatigue will not only compromise the connection between teacher and student, it will also compromise other connections, such as relationships with the teacher’s own child(ren), spouse, family members or friends. One of the most prevalent increases in my clinical practice after March 2020 was in front-line workers navigating relational conflict at home.

2. Trauma Psychological trauma occurs when a threat to our safety and well-being overwhelms our capacity to cope. As educators faced the risk to their own health (amplified by a 24-hour news cycle of death and tragedy), worried about their children and families, and faced working in ways never before imagined, they became (and have remained) incredibly vulnerable to the risk of trauma and PTSD. Post-traumatic stress disorder can result in an individual living in a constant state of alert known as hypervigilance. With a nervous system in overdrive, those with PTSD struggle with heightened and uncontrollable anxiety, depression, and difficulty managing emotional responses. They often develop distorted thinking, marked with a persistent worry about their own safety or the safety of their loved ones. Every problem becomes amplified and filtered through a constant sense of personal insecurity.

These symptoms, left untreated, can disrupt an individual’s ability to function in the long term, compromising their overall health, careers and relationships.

The demands on teachers to provide the best learning experience (often with limited or insufficient resources), manage the weight of public opinion (which is not always compassionate and appreciative), and provide for the intricate and diverse emotional, cultural and sociological needs of their students has grown steadily over time. For decades, some of the best minds have explored how the education system can better meet the needs of the students – but what of the needs of teachers? How can any model of improvement not include those who are on the front lines for any change we wish to make?

I do not presume to know what a system needs to look to like support both students and teachers alike, but I do know that the risks educators face during these challenging times are real. I also know that these risks are not limited to a few months of disruption or challenge but, instead, have the ability to tragically impact their health, careers and relationships well into the future.

3. Anxiety and depression Anxiety and depression are best understood as the brain’s natural responses to cope with being overwhelmed. Through this lens, we can understand how, as teachers become more and more overwhelmed by the demands of the pandemic, we will see a correlated increase in anxiety and depression.

With limited ability to change the level of output (energy and focus required to navigate the demands of work and life), and restricted access to restorative inputs, it is understandable that an increasing number of teachers have reported struggles with anxiety and depression,¹ with a significant portion seeking pharmaceutical or psychotherapeutic intervention for the first time. Left unresolved, anxiety and depression increase in intensity over time, putting educators at risk for panic attacks, persistent low mood, and many other harmful outcomes including self-harm and suicide.

The first step toward change is informed consent. Teachers, and all front-line workers, need to be aware of the risks of the work they do and the conditions in which they do them. Secondly, the mental health risks to educators need to be considered a primary occupational hazard and treated as such. Resources should be mobilized and allocated in a way that reflects the system’s commitment to protecting educators through and beyond the pandemic. Where time, funding or other resources are limited, the potential for community support should be considered. This might include inviting local mental-health professionals or community-based social organizations to partner in providing information or supports. Restructuring or re-allocating professional development opportunities may also be an option.

Supporting teachers may require innovative new methods, but the pandemic has provided many examples of how communities can come together to meet the needs of our most vulnerable.

The care of our children – and those who support them – is not a government issue or a union issue. It is a public-health issue.

Effectively supporting our educators as front-line workers is well within our capacity as a community and as a nation. To begin this important work we only need to acknowledge and accept that educators are facing a mental-health crisis and refuse to minimize the very real hazards of pandemic teaching any longer. Survival Tips for Teachers There are steps teachers can also take to build resilience and fortify their mental health. These include: n Modify expectations: “Doing your best” will not look the same each day, and striving for perfect is the path to poor mental health. Each day, check in with yourself and consider what doing your best means to you, today. Your circumstances and stress levels can change day to day, so being able to recalibrate your own expectations will help you to work in a satisfying and sustainable way. n Self-Advocate: It is important to consistently advocate for yourself and your mental health. The more educators share their experiences, the more information the education system has on which to develop and implement supports. You don’t have to disclose every aspect of your mental health experience or sacrifice your privacy. Just know that every voice added to the growing call for support can matter significantly. n Practice Self-Care: Self-care isn’t spa visits and golf trips. Taking care of yourself can include daily steps such as taking your breaks diligently, eating well, sharing a laugh with a loved one, or disconnecting through engagement in the arts or time outside. Find a practice that is restorative for you and make it a priority and a non-negotiable part of each day. n Reconnect with your Why: Do you remember why you decided to become a teacher? If not, take some time to reconnect with what you loved about being an educator.

Consider ways you can recapture that love in the current climate. I have encouraged all of my teacher clients to start a daily “Win Diary” where they can capture at least one moment each day that felt positive and reconnected them with their craft. It can be a student’s breakthrough or a shared moment of laughter with your colleagues. n Finally, understand that the public (including parents) may not always appreciate the selfless commitment you have to your work and to our children. Do not let this convince you that your work is unimportant or undeserving of recognition. You must set your own standard of excellence and let it – and the impact you will have on an entire generation of future adults – be your guiding light.

More people than ever now know what some already knew before COVID-19. There are deeply embedded obstacles in the way for far too many to participate equitably in what society has to offer. “All in this together” should be an aspiration, not a false claim of where we’ve been and where we are now. Getting back to normal? Really? When it comes to education, the curtain has been pulled back to clearly reveal that chronic challenges for too many students mean that a vastly new normal is necessary.

Any discussion about the future of education should begin with the end game, a conversation about its ultimate purpose(s). Any input that I offer is informed by my view that education should ensure that the future is healthier, safer, more just, and prosperous for the many rather than the elite few. We need to start with imagining that better future. How about this superb example:1 “Imagine it’s 2041 and a group of publicly educated 20-year-olds from across Ontario have been asked how they feel about the years they spent in school.

The conversation is animated and positive. They say

school made them feel like they belonged. It nurtured their compassion for themselves and others. It helped them grow from their mistakes. It welcomed their contributions. And it prepared them for a world of constant change. They say these things regardless of the school they attended, the colour of their skin, their sexual identity, the faith they practice, their physical or intellectual abilities, the teachers they had or the home they grew up in. Though they came from different places, their shared experience of education was one of caring, inclusion and excellence.”

When it comes to most of the complex issues of the day – climate change, health and well-being, racism, our democratic processes, and public communications that seem to divide rather than bring about consensus – education is always noted as the force for improvement. Former head of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Murray Sinclair, regarding the devastating and recurring consequences of residential schools, noted that “Education got us into this mess and education will get us out of it.” Let’s make sure it does!

At this point, we need widespread, diverse, and transparent conversations regarding the future of education. As suggested, people and organizations should start with their view of the end game. What follows is informed by mine.

turned the K–12 education world upside down and then unleashed a succession of school disruptions. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, speaking in August 2020, predicted that the effects of the pandemic were destined to become a “generational catastrophe” in education (UNESCO, 2020). Since then, the full extent of the learning slide affecting all students, and particularly the most disadvantaged, became more visible. Much like earlier studies generated in the Netherlands, the U.K., and the U.S., the first Canadian research reports and surveys testify to the combined academic and psycho-social impacts on children and families (Bennett, 2021).

Seeing the impact of school disruptions first-hand in her home, Nancy Small, a Vancouver mother of two increasingly tuned-out school-age children, cut to the heart of the matter: “Our kids are falling behind.” While the educational damage varies along regional, economic, and racial lines, there has been – until recently— little evidence of a coherent or coordinated plan to close the gaping “learning gap” and get today’s students back on track (Alphonso, 2021).

The COVID-19 pandemic shocks have exposed the fragility of the modern, centralized, top-down bureaucratic education state, identified and analyzed in my book, The State of the System. The massive disruption has also revealed the limitations of system-bound school change theories, conceived as hybrid “pedagogical and political

projects,”(Fullan, 2009, 2021), ill-equipped to address the immediate crisis in K–12 education.

Education visionaries, school change theorists, and their academic allies were quick to offer up familiar ideas dipped in COVID-19 and accompanied by a beguiling “build back better” narrative (Chapman & Bell, 2020). The post-pandemic future, in their imagined world, will be a clash of two mutually-exclusive visions: social equality and student well-being versus austerity and academic standards – good versus bad. This is a false dichotomy and a misreading of our current educational predicament.

A far better point of departure is provided in the World Bank’s report, COVID-19 Pandemic Shocks to Education (World Bank, 2020), surveying the collateral damage affecting school systems around the world. The immediate impacts were easier to spot, such as the economic and social costs, greater inequalities in access, and school-level health and safety concerns. Less so is the longer-term impact of “learning loss” and its worst-case mutation, “learning poverty,” marked by the inability to read and understand a simple text by ten years of age.

Shoring up the foundations has become a matter of urgent necessity. If we are facing a “generational catastrophe,” it’s time to reframe the challenges facing K–12 education. Teaching children how to read and to be functional in mathematics are now fundamental to social justice in pandemic times. Well-intentioned

What needs attention?

Given my overarching aspiration for education as the driver for that better future, what should receive priority attention?

Education must become a truly effective force against racism in all of its forms, and other issues informed by ignorance, including sexism and LGBTQ2+ bias.

We must ensure our preschool through post-secondary education continuum becomes a platform for mental health and well-being for both students and educators.

We need to develop a creative problem-solving approach that supports the development of our students into future change-making leaders. A project-based approach in which learners learn to work with others to go deep on the key complex issues facing their futures, applying discipline knowledge as necessary and appropriate.

There is an obvious need to develop high quality distance/remote learning capabilities for all students and all teachers and professors.

Effective and innovative remote learning technology should be considered a universal right and provided for free.

We need to develop new and more effective collaborative relationships between parents and educators in order to properly support the students they “share.” While there are wonderful examples of truly effective partnerships between teachers and parents, there is a good deal of room for improvement built on reciprocal respect for what each knows about their learners.

In the digital age, in which we are bombarded with information, education needs to become more effective in ensuring that learners of all ages have the evaluative skills to determine fact from fiction so they are sophisticated information consumers.

There are also structural changes to educational systems that could make a difference to learning success. In Canada, we still hold on to long summer vacations, a throwback to an agrarian economy when kids were needed on the farm. We need to explore a more seamless, continuous learning approach. As well, we need to do a total rethink about how we evaluate student progress. We also need to ensure that learners throughout their journeys get credit for what they already know and what they can already do. Outdoor learning needs major consideration, and Indigenous leaders have much to teach us about land-based learning.

We need to forcefully deal with pandemic learning loss. A collaborative approach that involves educators and other key stakeholders and experts needs to inform the development of systems to support students whose skill and knowledge acquisition is lagging behind.

Governments will need to step up and provide the resources required.

In order to ensure effective implementation of the recommendations I have noted above, major changes to both pre-service and inservice training for educators will be necessary. As well, never before has there been a greater need for more effective leadership selection and development for those with formal authority from preschool through post-secondary education.

Context matters

A big problem with government policymaking, including processes that have an impact on education, is that the lens for change is microscopic rather than telescopic. Put differently, policymaking too often suffers from what I call hardening of the categories. We will not be able to reach the promises of a new normal in education unless we ensure that critical issues such as income distribution and wage policies, sick leave, affordable housing, child care, and parental leave are part of a holistic and integrative approach by governments. We need governments to think and act horizontally when it comes tdevelopment and

Immediate Action Priorities n Establish task force(s) with all key stakeholders and key experts to ensure an effective multi-pronged approach to learning loss suffered by students as a result of pre-pandemic and pandemic challenges. n Kickstart a collaborative process to develop an effective preschool through post-secondary education platform for the mental health and well-being of students and educators. n Put in place a thorough and transparent plan to ensure education is a force for anti-racism, eradicating gender and identity discrimination in all forms, and ensuring that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s education Calls to Action are fully implemented. n Begin developing high-quality remote learning systems that provide effective educational experience for all students.

program development. Regarding child care, for example, many have advocated for decades that high-quality, developmentally enriching, non-profit and universal child care should be seen, developed, and implemented as an extension of our education systems.

Auspice

The pandemic, by necessity, has loosened the constitutionally driven ownership of educational responsibilities by the provinces and territories with short-term cash infusions by the federal government to assist their local “partners” with COVID-related school health and safety issues. Unfortunately, Canada continues its lonely global existence as a country without a federal department of education.

Naturally, education needs to serve local cultural and environmental differences, but shouldn’t it mean the same to be a student in Melville, Sask., St. John’s, Nfld., or Toronto? How is it possible that we do not have federal leadership when it comes to the most important nation-building lever for our better future? It’s time for a Canadian Royal Commission on Learning!

In conclusion…

It is an understatement to acknowledge that educators, and all those who support them, are treasured essential servant leaders who can take us to that better place for the many. Leadership matters. And to all those who have responsibilities in and around our education systems, I will let Alfred Lord Tennyson have the last word: The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks: The long day wanes: the slow moon climbs: the deep Moans round with many voices. trauma-informed educational interventions, such as relaxing grading standards, suspending provincial tests, or reverting to pass-fail summative assessments, run the risk of perpetuating the cycle of diminished expectations, falling unevenly on learning-challenged or marginalized students.

Critical thinking remains the holy grail of K–12 education, but it’s hard to envision without a grounding in domain-specific knowledge.

Equipping students with the content knowledge to think critically about a full range of important issues (Willingham, 2019) does not exemplify an “academic obsession” but rather a commitment to seeking deeper understanding. Nor are student well-being and academic success necessarily in conflict. In the vast majority of today’s classroom, they are rather mutually reinforcing.

Educators looking for a more effective catch-up strategy would be well advised to challenge the prevailing narrative for two vitallyimportant reasons: 1) the mistaken assumption that an academic focus and student well-being are somehow incompatible; and 2) the gross underestimation of the realities of the “COVID slide” and learning loss compromising the future success of today’s pandemic generation of students (Engzell et al., 2020).

Immediate responses

Confronting the magnitude of the crisis and solving the puzzle of what to do next can be daunting, so it is better to focus on a few more immediate, practical strategies. Establishing a clear and consistent focus on closing the learning gap does yield a few quick and proven learning recovery strategies. Most of the initial recovery strategies originated in the U.S., driven largely by independent research institutes such as the North West Education Association, Brookings Institution, and McKinsey & Company (Bennett, 2021). Countries with more experience coping with periodic disruptions are faring better and most of the lessons are coming from their school systems (Alphonso, 2021), most notably the Netherlands and Central European nations.

Academically-focused, supportive school environments and strong teacher-student relationships speed recovery from learning loss. Three strategies that have proven more effective (McKinsey & Company, 2021) are: 1. High-dosage one-on-one or small group tutoring tied directly to helping students master subject content in math and reading.

2. Extended learning time “catch-up” academies, offered over weekends or during student holiday breaks, offered by highly trained teachers, including “double dose” math instruction.

3. Positive school culture attuned to early student warning signs, paired with consistent support and routines that help students to recover both academically and emotionally from disrupted periods of learning.

Longer-term responses

Top-down educational leadership has run its course and systembound solutions will not work. The pandemic shutdown and continuing disruptions exposed what German sociologist Max Weber aptly termed the “Iron Cage” – a bureaucratic structure that traps individuals in an invisible web of order, rationality, conformity, and control (Bennett, 2020). We came to see how dependent students, teachers, and families were on provincial and school district directives. School shutdowns, delayed starts, shifting schedules, and unclear teacher expectations left students and teachers on their own to work out radically different home learning terms of engagement.

Immediate Action Priorities n Assess the impact of pandemic school disruptions, particularly the extent of the COVID-19 slide falling unevenly on disadvantaged students. Start by assessing the collateral damage in terms of academic learning loss and psycho-social impacts. n Adopt and implement effective and proven learning recovery strategies, closing the learning gap and putting students back on track. Provide a clear academic focus with learning supports for struggling students. n Embrace “future-proof education” rather than the pursuit of generic and ill-defined “21st century skills” and focus on the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to enable students to learn in a stable and enduring way in a rapidly changing, unpredictable world.

cratic K–12 education. Cage-busting leadership will be required to transform our schools into more autonomous social institutions that, first and foremost, serve students, families, and communities.

Challenging the technocratic ethos and language of “learnification” (Biesta, 2019) will be liberating for teachers and reduce the language barrier separating educators from parents. “Learners” will, once again, be students, “learning environments” will be classrooms, and “facilitating learning” recognized as the practice of teaching. Systemic reform will involve undertaking two fundamental structural changes: 1) the restoration of teaching-centred classrooms, and 2) the transition to community-focused, family-centric schools (Bennett, 2020).

Looking ahead: Seize the day

Futuristic visions of technology-driven whole-system reform have always evoked skepticism among regular classroom teachers. Helping their children with pandemic home learning has opened the eyes of thousands of parents to the everyday realities of technologydriven “21st century learning” and laid bare student skill deficits in mathematics and literacy. That may well explain why Big Ed Tech, exemplified by Google, Microsoft, and Pearson International, is finally attracting more critical scrutiny (Reich, 2020).

Imagining a better educational future may be inspirational, but what students, teachers, and families really need is “future proof” learning (Kirschner & Stoyanov, 2018). That term, coined by leading cognitive science expert Paul A. Kirschner, provides a viable and much-needed alternative to pursuing holistic, ill-defined “21st century skills” or embracing competency-based student graduation standards. The best way forward in pandemic times is deceptively simple: set aside the “21st century skills” panaceas in favour of “the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to continue to learn in a stable and enduring way in a rapidly changing world.”

Future-proof education is soundly based upon the science of learning and evidence-based research rather than sociological change theories. Redesigning schools and professionalizing teachers in 21st century learning strategies look attractive, but they are unlikely to EdCan Network | June 2021 • EDUCATION CANADA 17

make much difference and may produce heavier teaching workloads without really addressing our current educational crisis.

Cognitive learning specialists provide us with a far more reliable guide to how learning happens and the critical importance of working memory in the whole process. What Kirschner proposes is a threestage approach: 1. Lay the building blocks (i.e. concrete cognitive knowledge and skills).

2. Develop higher-order thinking and working skills.

3. Tackle Bigger Problems that require metacognitive competencies and skills.

Teaching children how to read and to be functional in mathematics are now fundamental to social justice in pandemic times.

The COVID-19 shocks to education will continue to reverberate in Canada’s K–12 schools in the near future. It’s a rescue mission that needs to begin by shoring up the foundations and putting the pandemic generation back on the path to sound education in purposeful schools, and better prepared to lead meaningful, productive lives. The pandemic stripped teachers from what we knew or believed was good teaching and learning. We had to make choices to regain this power. The pandemic served as a catalyst for change and forced educators to exercise their agency and think critically about what’s really important to teach and learn – with less time and more barriers. Getting through the curriculum seemed like an impossible task… and it was.

One way to regain our power as educators was to let go. We had to let go of our routines and expectations. What we used to do in the classroom could not be done during the pandemic. We had to figure out how to create learning experiences that were engaging, yet wholeheartedly embraced learning intentions that best reflected the curriculum. Not everyone was in class and some students were learning online. Deciding to let go of what was is a choice.

Understanding that we have choice as educators is key to our freedom to create and design experiences that meet the learning needs of the students in our classroom – and also meet our learning needs as educators. Teaching during a pandemic inherently involves a steep learning curve that we’ve had to tackle whether we like it or not.

Wishing away the pandemic or hoping that all schools would close and go online are not outcomes within our control. Choosing to let go and reconsider what teaching and learning looks during the pandemic is within our control. Exercising our professional autonomy and making decisions that best suit the learners in our classroom is our agency as educators. As educators, we are collectively questioning what we can do to make teaching and learning viable for our students: to meet them where they are, make learning fun, and stay loyal to the curriculum.

Lessons in agency

As a teacher educator, I have the privilege of peeking into K–12 schools to observe teacher candidates, but also to imagine what is possible in teaching and learning during COVID times. I saw classes ranging from five students, to classes split into morning and afternoon cohorts, to full classrooms. I loved watching classes that were held outside.

Students in a multi-graded class would gather and sit under the “poetree,” in the snow, to read, listen, share, and create poetry together.

In another class, where there were very few students, the lesson focused on movement and play-based activities to learn how to sound out words and spell. Students were encouraged to get up and move around the room to find words about food (their favourite topic), and they could choose to work in partners or independently.

Students were engaged, on-task, and worked at their own rate. The

words hidden around the room were inclusive and students had choice in what words they found, how they would sound out the words, and how they would practise spelling the words.

By letting go and embracing our autonomy and agency as designers of learning, we can create learning experiences for students so that they are able to develop and exercise their agency by having choice within the learning activity. Students, in turn, will feel empowered.

They take ownership of their learning. They can choose how they learn, who they learn with, and what they produce. The driving force to this kind of learning is the why that’s embedded.

In British Columbia, the provincial curriculum has three Core Competencies: Communication, Thinking, and Personal/Social.

These core competencies are developed and embedded in the learning. Students are learning how to communicate, collaborate, and think critically, creatively, and reflectively. They are also developing social responsibility, cultural awareness, and positive personal identity, which serve as underpinnings to what is being taught and why it’s important.

The Core Competencies not only connect and interconnect different subject areas into more meaningful and purposeful interdisciplinary learning experiences that are holistic and experiential; they also prioritize the humanness of learning back into education. The mastery of content is no longer the goal. Instead, content serves as the vehicle for learning. Curricular competencies are introduced, developed, and honed. And context and community matter.

When we focus on the competencies, we not only free ourselves from the burden of singular outputs and striving to create a high level of sameness amongst our learners, we empower students to personalize their learning, make choices about their learning, and

Joy becomes part of the learning experience. Learning with others and co-constructing knowledge and criteria become the norm for students.

In a Grade 3–6 class, the primary focus was to make their math thinking visible. The topic was estimating. The class started out with a jar of dominoes and students estimated how many were in it. The lesson moved onto working in small groups at locations around the classroom, where each group collaboratively make their thinking and learning visible on whiteboards.

With each problem projected, the students became more engaged.

The learning environment was inclusive, collaborative, and dynamic.

Students had the freedom to move, discuss, and solve.

Throughout the math lesson, students were practising their numeracy skills, understanding of math facts, and number estimating.

They were also developing their skills in communication, collabora-

tion, and thinking. The Core Competencies were central to this learning experience, which enabled the teacher to facilitate the learning while also having students choose how they would approach the problem, work in small groups, and mutually agree or negotiate an answer.

The lesson concluded with students returning to the jar of dominoes to see if they would change their original estimation based on what they had just learned and collectively experienced in small groups. Some students chose to keep their answer while others opted to change. In the end, they counted the dominoes in the jar to see how close their estimation was to the actual answer. There were cheers, smiles, and a few groans once the answer was revealed.

The students provided feedback to the teacher at the end of the lesson by holding one to four fingers up to their chest to reveal their level of confidence and understanding of estimation. The students also offered many opportunities during the lesson for the teacher to assess how they were doing with the learning. One could assess the noise level in the room (a.k.a. the hum) when students broke off into small groups. One could look at the thinking made visible on the white boards. One could see how they well they estimated the number of dominoes in the jar, before and after.

What I appreciated most about this lesson was not only that the educator created a learning experience that provided many choices for students to engage in the learning, but that there were also many different opportunities and ways to assess student learning and progress, and multiple ways for students to demonstrate their learning throughout the lesson. Assessment is not limited to the traditional pen and paper, and what was important was more than the answer.

The way forward

The global pandemic stopped everyone in their practice and allowed us to take a moment to reflect, reassess, and recalibrate. What is working, what’s not working, and what is worth keeping? I invite you to reflect on these questions and self-assess how you have pivoted during the pandemic and what you would consider keeping in your practice or return back to.

To regain our sense of power during the pandemic and beyond is to understand and exercise our agency as educators and feel good about letting go of some of what we previously did – because doing so allows us to get to the heart of teaching and learning. We want to create, design, and facilitate learning experiences where students feel empowered because they have agency to choose within flexible and reflexive frameworks and guidelines that you determine and provide.

Trust your professional judgment. Take a risk. Break (your) rules and be vulnerable to the uncertainty of not doing things in the same way you have known or experienced. Go outside with your class.

Be intentional with the learning. Notice and wonder. What are the students learning? What’s working? What’s not working? Tweak it and try again. Try assessing students in ways that empower them, include their input and voice; this can be done in a variety of ways.

We must break away from the industrial model of mass education. COVID-19 separated us and now we pine to be together as a community and learn together as a community. We want and need to bring back humanity, strive for learning that is student-centred, competency-based, personalized, and interdisciplinary. The pandemic kept us home, which helps us to value being local, learning from our community, and learning more about local Indigenous knowledge and perspectives.

We want students to love learning, feel in control of their learning, and understand the intrinsic good of learning.

Be vulnerable. Let go. Be the agent of your learning. Choose what will work best for your students as it relates to the curriculum. Less is more. We are choosing what is best for our students to learn, meeting them where they are, and focusing on quality over quantity. Enable and encourage students to be the agents of their learning. We can empower ourselves and also the students by giving them voice, choice, community, and context.

What we hope for post-pandemic is for teachers to embrace their professional autonomy to create learning experiences for students that give them opportunities to exercise their own agency. We want students to love learning, feel in control of their learning, and understand the intrinsic good of learning. When we achieve this, students will extend their learning, take risks, and be vulnerable. They will develop their competencies and sense of self as they construct and co-construct deeper understandings of their identity, of others, and of the environment. EC

Learning Our Way Out of the Pandemic Beyond “back to normal” for Canadian students

world, Canadians are looking with relief to a more open, carefree summer and normal return to school later this year. But after 18 months of profound disruption, will “normal” be good enough? Are we on track to set all children up for success in a world that often seems more uncertain – and unequal – than ever before?

This article begins by examining how Canadian schools have fared during COVID-19 compared to those in other jurisdictions. We then turn to evidence-based

ways that educators can ensure a better, stronger, and more equitable start in September 2021.

Educational equity is COVID-19’s shadow crisis

While students are less likely to contract or die from COVID, around the world their lives have been deeply disrupted by the pandemic. At its peak, schools serving 1.6 billion students were closed. Today, UNESCO’s global tracker shows that, a year into the crisis, “partial openEdCan Network | June 2021 • EDUCATION CANADA 23

ing” is the norm. Overall, North American schools were closed in whole or in part for online learning for longer durations than experienced in most other parts of the world.

A sobering reality of the COVID-19 schooling experience is that even the best-resourced and highest-performing education systems in the world have heightened their tendency to privilege better-off children (UN Secretary General, 2020; OECD, 2020). Students from households with greater levels of connectivity, higher levels of parental education, greater availability of parental time for engagement, and in-home availability of books and materials have much better ability to access and benefit from distance learning.

In Canada as elsewhere, responses to COVID-19 have led to a patchwork of educational offerings. While students in Atlantic Canada and British Columbia have largely enjoyed face-to-face instruction, in other parts of Canada, students continue to experience periods of full-time or blended online learning from home. “Virtual schools” – intended as an emergency response – are a new feature of the landscape in Ontario and Alberta. Across the country, sports and extracurricular activities that build engagement and keep kids active have been paused.

Connectivity has not saved us. Access to broadband is not considered an essential service in Canada; coverage is both expensive and sometimes unavailable, especially in rural areas. Schools in some jurisdictions are still struggling to deliver appropriate devices to students. Stories abound of Canadian children who, one year into the pandemic, have limited bandwidth, are using old technologies, and are functioning without microphones or earphones. It is common to hear of kids whose attendance has dropped, who are disengaged, or who are missing from school altogether.

A growing body of large-scale international evidence shows that educational disruptions today and during other periods have caused impacts both on students’ academic achievement, and on their social and emotional well-being. Virtually all large-scale studies in OECD countries during COVID-19 (including from Belgium, the Netherlands, England, and the U.S.), have shown that students’ learning has fallen behind where it would have been for their age and grade levels in previous years. Overall, math scores have declined more than scores in literacy-related assessments and the youngest learners seem to have lost the most ground (Bailey, 2021; Education Endowment Foundation, n.d.).

For example, one U.S. study of over 400,000 students showed that the proportion of students starting Grade 1 two years or more behind grade level had risen from 27 percent to 40 percent. “As a result, a hypothetical school that needed to offer intensive intervention to 100 students in the fall of 2019 is faced with making up for the lost instruction for 148 students in 2020.”(mClass/Amplify, 2020).

Other studies from past crises and disruptions are even more concerning. These show that learning gaps can continue to grow even after schools return to normal (Andrabi et al., 2020). Further, school disruptions can have harsh cumulative effects, lowering chances of secondary completion and reducing labour market earnings of affected children many years later (Jaume & Willlen, 2019).

Perhaps most importantly, COVID-19 will not impact students equally. Recent studies show larger average gaps for relatively disadvantaged students, such as those living in low-income households or where parents have less education, or additional language learn-

ers. In the U.S., which tracks measures of racial inequality, Black and Hispanic students are also, on average, further behind. When surveyed during COVID-19, these are the same populations of learners who report facing a larger number of barriers and disruptions to their learning; who have lower access to technology; and who report fewer opportunities to get support from an adult at home or in the school (Chu & Lake, 2021).

In Canada, we know that all our kids are under strain. But we have little empirical evidence, beyond immediate experience, to tell us how our kids are doing overall, much less to spotlight where equity gaps are most severe. For the most part, large-scale provincial assessments and high-quality comparable surveys of student well-being are not available. Small-scale studies – such as one conducted recently in Alberta, and a recent report from the Toronto District School Board – show significant year-on-year gaps in early reading proficiency (Johnson, 2021; Alphonso, 2021). Education budgets and plans for the 2021 school year are being settled now, before school boards and higher educational institutions have begun to release data on school attendance, graduation, and applications to post-secondary education. Already, we can see that this lack of data on equity and other vulnerabilities is leading to a limited focus on educational recovery in planning and budget processes for 2021/2022. In this sense, Canadian educational systems may be flying blind.

Yet even before COVID-19, we knew that Canadian students from households in the bottom income quintile across Canada achieved the equivalent of one year less of schooling than students from households in the top income quintile. A recent study suggests that in many Canadian jurisdictions, the average student from a low-income household does not leave compulsory school with the skills needed to proceed to post-secondary education (Haek & Lefebvre, 2020).

In summary: International evidence and recent trends in Canada suggest that harms from COVID-19 will almost certainly exacerbate educational inequality. COVID-19 has disrupted learning and wellbeing for most students in Canada – but its impacts are unlikely to be evenly distributed.

In other countries, efforts to redress inequity have already begun

Around the world, countries have responded to the educational needs created by COVID-19-related disruptions with programs and initiatives that aim to jump-start learning and support social and emotional well-being for those students most disadvantaged by the pandemic. For example: • As early as June 2020, the government of the Netherlands committed $278 million US for students who need extra academic support due to COVID-19 school disruptions.

• In November 2020, Britain announced a £1-billion commitment to help students “catch up” after school closures, including £350 million for tutoring, targeted at the disadvantaged students who were most affected.

• Most recently, the American stimulus package passed into law in March 2021 included a commitment of $129 billion for K–12 education. While most of those funds were to support safe re-opening, it also contained a commitment of $22 billion – equivalent to 20 days of extra schooling – to support learning recovery through tutoring, summer school, and extended hours programs alongside www.edcan.ca/magazine

targeted support for students with disabilities and young people facing homelessness.

These examples suggest a strong focus internationally on academic catch-up programs. We know less about what governments are doing to ensure that schools adjust to meet the social and emotional needs of kids, an area that research suggests is of great importance after the widespread trauma of the past year (Hough & Witte, 2021).

Apart from a few small or failed initiatives, it appears that Canadian policymakers are just beginning to think about how to redress the impacts of COVID-19 on student learning and well-being. Quebec recently announced a program to hire online tutors to support struggling students; while B.C. has announced a $23-million supplement for vulnerable learners that could cover tutoring, mental health support, or additional staff hiring.

In many parts of the country, community organizations have stepped in with academic and other kinds of support. But a federal program that promised to provide funding for university-level volunteers, with enormous potential for serving the needs of disadvantaged students, fell apart in the shadow of scandal, leaving the energies of tens of thousands of registered volunteers untapped.

Canadian students will need more – and there is a wealth of evidence to guide us

It will take a whole-of-society effort to ensure Canadian students make a successful return to school in September 2021. We already know that the economic challenges faced by some households are intensifying, and that national and provincial budgets are likely to contract. Policymakers will need to focus on a few cost-effective ideas to guide their actions. Research points us in three main directions:

1. Don’t act like it’s business as usual.

Much recent research suggests that schools will need to start where kids are this fall. Slimming back the curriculum to ensure a balance between mastery of the essentials and in-depth opportunity for social and emotional learning is an approach that has been widely used during recovery from different types of crises around the world (Winthrop, 2020; Srivastava et al., 2020).

Students’ connection to school – perhaps jeopardized through repeated interruptions – is reinforced with opportunities for creativity, play, and collective action.

2. Engage parents and communities, early and often.

COVID-19 has reminded many educators that education is a partnership between home and school (Winthrop, 2020). It also led to many experiments for improving the link between parents and schools – from SMS messaging to parents in Botswana, which improved student’s math learning; to parent hotlines and weekly meetings with school-based community liaisons. Partnerships between schools and community organizations were essential during COVID-19. A recent OECD study suggests that interactions between parents and schools were not very prominent in some Canadian jurisdictions prior to the pandemic (OECD, 2021). Postpandemic, we should be aiming for more – not less – community and parental engagement in schools, including through models that allow community organizations to provide wrap-around academic and non-academic supports to kids (Murray et al., 2021).

3. Provide extra opportunities for kids to catch up.

A strong body of evidence suggests two key ways to support a strong start to the 2021 school year for all kids, especially those most disadvantaged during the pandemic.

Summer learning programs – especially those that utilize trained

teachers, structured pedagogy, enrichment experiences, and high levels of teacher-student engagement – have been shown to provide strong gains in learning (Alexander et al., 2016). Even modest efforts to promote learning over the summer months can be effective. For example, Harvard’s summer learning program mailed ten books to students over the summer, matched to students’ reading interests, with email/texts to parents. This simple program was shown to promote more than one month of gains in reading skills.

Tutoring – through one to one or small group instruction – is also

highly effective, especially when based on sustained relationships between a tutor and student, and when using good-quality materials aligned to classroom instruction. Even programs offered by volunteers, peers, or family members, when trained, produce surprisingly strong outcomes for kids ranging from stronger academic performance to increased confidence and self-efficacy.

Such programs need to be designed with equity in mind – but can also benefit from inclusion of all students in a grade level to reduce any negative stigma and ensure broader organizational commitment (Robinson et al., 2021).

Much more can be done to tilt our education systems toward greater equity post-COVID. We need our education leaders to plan beyond a return to the normal in September 2021. Promising strategies include: starting where kids are, rather than where they are supposed to be; leveraging the engagement of parents and communities; and providing new opportunities for kids to get up to grade level. Each of these holds a key to a successful return to school for Canadian students, regardless of social advantage. tainty; COVID-19 has been a stark reminder that change is part of our lives. It’s difficult to predict what our formal education system will look like post-pandemic. Nevertheless, we can say that in this new normal there will certainly be a need for open exchange of views among all stakeholders in education. This article describes a model of school and community engagement, the Gathering Model, that may prove useful. In presenting this model, we share a set of equitable best practices that teachers, schools, and school boards can use as a template for parent and community outreach initiatives and to offer a resource for addressing the new normal.

Toronto’s York Region is one of Canada’s most diverse school districts. While 90 percent of its residents are Canadian citizens, one in two were born outside Canada. The languages spoken at home include Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), Russian, Farsi, Italian, Tamil, Korean, Urdu, Spanish, Punjabi, and Gujarati. When we consider these changes, it becomes clear that we need to think differently when talking about community building. Community building based on goals and principles of sameness does not achieve inclusion. Community building has to be fostered through inclusive practices and processes.

This applies in all our school communities, as populations across Canada are increasingly more diverse.

The Gathering Model

The Gathering Model is based on an ongoing, 15-year collaboration between the York Region District School Board (YRDSB) and the Faculty of Education at York University. In 2005, they partnered to pilot a new model of community engagement. Scott Milne, Manager of School and Community Projects at YRDSB, and Dr. John Ippolito, Associate Professor at York, were invited to serve as leads.

Armadale Public School was selected as the pilot site because it was the largest and most linguistically diverse school in the YRDSB, in a neighbourhood experiencing pronounced demographic shifts. The thinking was that the initiative could both capitalize on emerging assets within the changing population and respond to new challenges. Since this time, multiple versions of the model have been implemented in over a dozen YRDSB schools.

This model goes beyond community engagement to explore the potential for family voices – including the voices of marginalized parents – to support school and community improvement. The model responds both to recent patterns of migration and to extensive research on the positive impacts of parents taking an active role in their children’s education.1

A cycle of community dialogue

The Gathering Model supports a cycle of community dialogue. This dialogue centres on after-school/evening events involving parents, administrators, teachers, students, researchers, and community service agencies.

In most of our sites, the role of community agencies has been limited, but in some schools their role has been more significant, even if only to highlight the services they offer. These events (anywhere from one to four per year at participating schools) address issues parents think are important to their families’ experience of public schooling. At some schools, the event now includes a separate student dialogue.

Clearly, the pandemic has put these in-person events on hold. As with education more generally, our participating schools have experienced a fracturing of community, leaving students and families feeling disconnected from their schools. However, this forced time-out is being put to good use in revisiting initiatives the model has piloted www.edcan.ca/magazine

over the years, such as parent-driven research, parent and teacher research groups, and online discussion forums (Ippolito, 2012, 2018), and in exploring more recent online conversation platforms such as ThoughtExchange. We look forward to making innovative links between these online platforms and in-person events, which will, at some future point, become possible. This interplay of in-person and online resources will remain defined by the cycle of community dialogue outlined below (see Figure 1).

A fundamental component of the Gathering Model is a formalized planning team consisting of staff, families, and community partners.

While everyone is invited to the planning team, a deliberate effort is made to engage individuals, community members, and organizations that represent marginalized voices. The aim is to have at least three community members present for each meeting, though the www.edcan.ca/magazine

community members do not have to be the same at each meeting.

In these instances, new members are welcomed into the planning discussion with a brief synopsis of previous work. Rotating membership for community members and flexibility in the timing of meetings encourages community engagement. This planning team is involved in every stage of the cycle, from pre-event planning, to event design, to post-event data analysis, to data mobilization in school, and system planning. Through this process, the model becomes a regular and ongoing formalized process.

Unlike traditional parent involvement approaches, where families are encouraged to participate in their children’s schools but where the agenda and decisions lie in the hands of the school, this is a model of community engagement where schools evolve in relation to family needs and where the community shares responsibility and power in determining agendas (Ippolito, 2010). In developing an agenda and topics for the discussion forums, the goal is to have at least half of each event’s agenda determined by students, families, and community partners on the planning team. The questions used to collect data for school and system improvement must be generated with community input, as with the following: • What is bullying, and how do we make sure it doesn’t happen in our school?

• What strategies and approaches can we use to communicate with children about their learning?

• What kind of peer relationships and friends help support our children’s healthy development into young adults?

The structure and frequency of planning meetings are flexible and depend on the context and availability at each school. However, EdCan Network | June 2021 • EDUCATION CANADA 27

planning teams meet twice per month in the three months preceding an event. Some timelines to consider include when to send out invitations to the community to provide sufficient time to RSVP and when to contact local food vendors.

Community dialogue

Community dialogue events begin with a shared meal. Schools have held this event in school gymnasiums and libraries/learning commons. Some schools have organized the event in local community spaces, such as a neighbourhood mosque. When planning the menu and selecting vendors for a shared meal, it is important to be culturally responsive and to consider dietary needs of the community.

Since childminding is also provided, schools consider opportunities to partner with community organizations to provide students and families greater awareness of local resources. In addition, planning the physical space requires consideration of religious accommodations, including prayer spaces. The shared meal, childminding, and any other expenses are funded through the school, removing barriers for families wanting to take part in the community dialogue.

Tables are set up and all stakeholders are invited to sit with each other, regardless of their roles. This encourages community building by removing the barriers of formal titles like administrator, school staff member, community organization leader, parent, or student.

The purpose of the shared meal is to provide time and space for people to get to know each other through conversation. At the end of the meal, children are directed to various childminding spaces and activities. Some schools have encouraged student performances of dance, poetry, and music to open and close the shared meal and bring families together in celebration of students. Student performances are welcomed, but care is taken so they don’t take up too much time.

The goal is to ensure that table-based discussions of the agenda items constitute roughly three-quarters of the time of each event.

The community dialogue engages stakeholders in open-ended conversations while removing potential barriers for participation. One such barrier for many families is language. Intentional steps are made to lessen this by providing translation technology and on-site translators reflecting the home languages of families. In addition, designated tables are assigned for conversations in preferred languages, with additional support of translators as needed. Another barrier is posed by power differentials between various stakeholders within education. These differentials can influence what gets shared and what is kept silent. To disrupt this, the event is set up to encourage discussion of agenda items between stakeholders in the same role, rather than across stakeholder groups. This provides each group an opportunity to speak openly about their thoughts and experiences.

Community voice as data

A defining feature of the Gathering Model is a commitment to collect and mobilize data generated through various forms of community engagement. This research work is done by the formalized planning team consisting of staff, families, and community partners. Planning teams also have access to research expertise from the Faculty of Education at York University.

At the community dialogue events, data is recorded at each discussion table with Chromebooks equipped with multilingual software. Having the data digitized enables translation into English for the purposes of data analysis. The digitized data is prepared for analysis following qualitative methods for text-based responses (e.g.

Glesne, 2015; Lichtman, 2013). Focusing on the core questions that shape the agenda for a community dialogue event, data is coded to summarize and condense key themes or issues. This search for

patterns in the data moves from the level of codes to categories to themes and, potentially, to theory generation. The overarching aim of data analysis is to measure the impact of community engagement, which can include student engagement through participation in cocurricular activities, and to generate recommendations for school

THE GATHERING MODEL has made an impact on our community in ways beyond what I can explain in words. It has given a voice to marginalized parents and caregivers and helped bridge a communication gap between school and home. It eliminated the language barriers for many parents and caregivers and allowed them to express their concerns freely. It has helped build relationships, not just between school and the community, but also among parents and caregivers.

The gathering has made it possible to transform ideas and suggestions into implementable solutions because the end result is a collective perspective of students, staff, and the community.

The gathering has become a tool to help parents and caregivers understand the importance of engagement and the impact it will have on their child’s well-being and education. Most importantly, it taught the school community to think beyond just their own child’s experience in the school and aim to improve every child’s experience in the school.

The gathering event has allowed the school community to trust that the school staff and administration will listen to their concerns, ideas, and suggestions because they know that, unlike a typical survey where you will never see a visible result, those concerns, ideas, and suggestions will be converted into solutions, and those solutions will be implemented as visible actions.

My various involvement with the school and the school board has given me a unique perspective of the event. As a parent, a school council co-chair, and as a PEAC (PIC) Co-chair, I am truly humbled to be part of the planning process of the gathering event at my school. It was amazing to see the students, parents, caregivers, school council, and staff building partnerships and working together for a common goal.

It would be almost impossible to organize a successful event like the gathering without those partnerships.

During the data mining process, it was unbelievable to see the same reaction and expressions from different groups of individuals who are reading the same feedback forms. It is truly remarkable to see an event like this connecting students, teachers, and the community.

School planning/data mobilization

The school must update the community in a timely fashion on how data have been used to improve school and/or system operations.

Community members must see and hear evidence that their efforts are moving the school’s culture and practices forward. These updates often take place at subsequent community dialogue events and serve to link a previous event to a current one. The school, school board departments, and senior management may present information of benefit to the community, or data may generate key questions for gathering further data to help the school and system serve students and families better. This is also an opportunity for the community to ask follow-up questions about school and system priorities and how to better support student learning and community development.

Core challenge

A core challenge in mobilizing this process is sustaining the involvement of community throughout various stages of the process. Currently, families and community partners are mostly engaged as participants in the community dialogue. Community participation is substantially reduced or absent during data analysis, mobilization of data, and decision making. This highlights a mindset prevalent among system staff that community is not an integral partner. While schools welcome community voice, they continue to hold decisionmaking power in how narratives are shaped and what is prioritized and acted upon.

This lack of full involvement by community members means that realizing the model’s potential for change lies disproportionately in the hands of staff. In many cases, staff have neither the skills nor knowledge to seize upon this opportunity, so schools often choose to take action on items that are easiest to address rather than on what is identified by the community as most urgent and needed.

Additionally, school responses can sometimes be surface-level actions (such as inviting a one-time guest speaker, without further follow through or commitment to looking at implications of their own school policies and programs) that lack depth or sustainability.

In this way, a checklist mentality becomes a barrier to the model’s potential for change. This way of thinking is reinforced by the system’s emphasis on timing and accountability that pressures schools to sacrifice the quality of the process in exchange for completion.

level of community input. Community is more than just a physical and geographic similarity. It is also a feeling of safety and belonging.

Identity and community cannot be separate and belonging must be defined through a lens of equity and justice. These priorities are wellserved by the open exchange enabled by the Gathering Model and will prove useful to us in the new normal. Community voice and agency

Addressing this core challenge requires full focus on the key determinant of success within the Gathering Model, namely, inclusion of community voice and agency. This input must occur in a formal way through participation on the planning and research team, and not through ad-hoc, informal conversations with school and/or system staff. Having said this, participating schools are encouraged to seek out partnerships with internal system departments such as Research Services, Planning, or Special Education, and with external community-based agencies.

PAR SOPHIE NADEAU-TREMBLAY ET MARIE-ANDRÉE PELLETIER LA PANDÉMIE DE COVID-19 a bousculé le système édu-

catif en nous obligeant à repenser certaines manières de faire. Alors que des défis déjà existants ont été exacerbés, de nouvelles collaborations et pratiques ont aussi émergé. En effet, dans le cadre d’une collaboration entre l’initiative École en réseau (ÉER) et l’Université TÉLUQ, l’expertise développée dans l’ÉER a été mise à contribution; des initiatives ont vu le jour et des pratiques novatrices ont inspiré de nouveaux moyens de (re)penser l’école. Après la présentation de l’ÉER, le présent article soulève des éléments clés qu’a mis en lumière cette collaboration inédite : • un avancement de connaissances important au regard du bon usage et du bon dosage des outils technologiques; • une prise de conscience des enjeux de l’usage que l’on fait du numérique pour poser un jugement critique, tout en réfléchissant aux enjeux éthiques; • le besoin de collaboration et d’accompagnement des enseignants dans l’action; • un avancement pour les collaborations avec des partenaires extrascolaires en salle de classe.

L’École en réseau

L’initiative ÉER est issue d’un projet de recherche développé depuis 2002 en partenariat avec des milieux scolaires, des chercheurs et le ministère de l’Éducation du Québec (MEQ) (Laferrière et coll., 2006; Laferrière et coll., 2004). Elle visait originalement l’amélioration de l’environnement éducatif de petites écoles en régions éloignées. Depuis une dizaine d’années, de plus grandes écoles et classes désireuses de travailler avec des outils numériques y participent pour bonifier l’apprentissage des élèves. Il ne s’agit pas d’une école qui fait à proprement parler l’enseignement à distance, mais plutôt d’un dispositif qui facilite le travail collaboratif entre communautés d’apprentissage, à l’oral comme à l’écrit. Financée par le MEQ selon un budget réparti pour les Centres de services scolaires inscrits pour les petites

écoles participantes et la coordination des activités, l’ÉER est une ressource en appui au Plan d’action numérique du MEQ. Il est intéressant de noter qu’en 2002, pour expliquer l’ÉER, il fallait préciser qu’il ne s’agissait pas de formation à distance, mais bien d’une approche inédite dans laquelle l’enseignant demeure bien présent. Vingt ans plus tard, avec la pandémie, l’ÉER constitue un fort levier permettant de faciliter l’école à distance tout en gardant les enseignants actifs devant l’écran.

L’ÉER soutient les classes en réseau, donc des classes distantes qui collaborent avec l’aide du numérique à favoriser les apprentissages des élèves. Lors du confinement du printemps 2020, les enseignants faisant partie de l’ÉER qui n’avaient jamais imaginé enseigner à distance dans ce contexte se sont dit : « Mes élèves sont habitués de communiquer en visioconférence, ils connaissent les applications, nous utilisons déjà ces outils en classe au quotidien, donc ils seront en mesure de poursuivre les apprentissages à la maison ». La classe en réseau s’est donc rapidement transformée en classe à distance grâce à leur expertise (Magny, 2020; Nadeau-Tremblay et Turcotte, 2020). Les enseignants ont imaginé avec créativité des manières de rendre les élèves actifs à distance.

Les enjeux autour de la technologie

La pandémie a amené une démocratisation et une accessibilité à la visioconférence en classe, pour les enseignants comme pour les élèves. Tous sont mieux en mesure de l’utiliser sur le plan technique. Toutefois, les activités proposées misent souvent sur l’oral, soit un enseignant qui parle et présente un contenu. Les interactions limitées avec les élèves les rendent alors plus passifs et désengagés. Parallèlement, une recrudescence de l’utilisation des manuels scolaires et l’accent mis sur les connaissances sont observés, et ce, même chez des enseignants ayant délaissé ce type de matériel (Carpentier et Sauvageau, 2021). L’idée est qu’en basculant à distance ou en étant en permanence avec des élèves en école virtuelle, il est plus simple d’utiliser les manuels pour acheminer le travail à www.edcan.ca/fr/magazine

la maison. Toutefois, cette pratique rend difficile une posture pédagogique près des intérêts et des besoins des élèves et accroit le recours à un enseignement magistral plutôt qu’à des pédagogies plus actives et intégrant le numérique. Les riches possibilités de travailler autrement s’en voient limitées et ramènent à des paradigmes de transmission des connaissances. La technologie implique le recours à des pratiques à réinventer et non simplement à transférer.

Une manière d’y parvenir est de démontrer une grande agilité à utiliser les outils numériques, donc à multiplier la capacité d’adaptation des apprenants comme des autres acteurs scolaires. Il ne s’agit pas de maitriser parfaitement un outil avant d’en amorcer l’utilisation mais de l’apprendre dans l’action. D’ailleurs, l’intégration du numérique doit se faire au quotidien par tous, des gestionnaires aux élèves en passant par les enseignants, les conseillers pédagogiques et les autres professionnels. Plutôt que de « s’exercer » à utiliser telle technologie, il faut l’intégrer réellement dans les activités quotidiennes de la classe.

Malheureusement, certains des acteurs clés, notamment des conseillers pédagogiques et des directions d’établissement adoptent systématiquement une approche de formation au numérique en dehors de la classe plutôt que de jouer un rôle d’appui aux activités en classe. Être un modèle à tous les niveaux et offrir l’occasion de prendre des risques facilite l’intégration signifiante du numérique.

Le numérique pour l’apprentissage

L’apprentissage à distance est facilité par l’utilisation d’outils technologiques et peut constituer un levier pour le développement de la compétence numérique (Pelletier et coll., sous presse). Dans le travail en réseau, l’usage pédagogique d’outils numériques n’est pas une visée en soi. Il s’agit d’un canal, d’un moyen permettant aux élèves de classes distantes d’interagir à l’oral, par la visioconférence, à l’écrit, par différentes plateformes (p.ex., Office 365, Google Class Room, Knowledge Forum, Padlet, etc.) ainsi qu’en collaboration avec des partenaires extrascolaires tels des musées, des scientifiques, des auteurs, etc. Le défi réside moins dans cette capacité d’appropriation technique (Allaire et coll., 2009) que dans le « comment » pour l’enseignant : comment organiser l’équilibre des activités interclasses (en classe et individuelles), comment réinvestir les retours individuels www.edcan.ca/fr/magazine

et en groupe, comment assurer le suivi des tâches réalisées, etc. Ainsi, le volet pédagogique est d’une importance centrale dans les activités en réseau.

L’accompagnement des enseignants dans l’action

Aborder de nouvelles pratiques d’enseignement est facilité par un accompagnement qui peut se déployer de multiples manières : partage de ressources et de tutoriels, vidéos, communautés de pratique, soutien dans l’action, etc. Les derniers mois ont été marqués par des transformations fréquentes pour les enseignants qui doivent s’adapter continuellement.

Le soutien ponctuel et immédiat est grandement apprécié par un grand nombre d’enseignants qui veulent trouver des réponses quand ils en ont besoin. Notamment, la salle de soutien virtuelle de l’ÉER ouverte tous les jours de la semaine rassure, car les enseignants savent qu’une personne est présente pour les soutenir sur les plans technologique et pédagogique. De plus, l’accompagnement des enseignants dans l’action constitue une condition gagnante inventoriée par les principaux intéressés. Concrètement, il s’agit de soutenir un groupe d’enseignants et leurs élèves dans le cadre d’une activité réelle qu’ils peuvent expérimenter en classe. L’enseignant n’assiste donc pas à une formation sur un sujet ou sur un outil qu’il expérimentera en classe; il s’inscrit plutôt à une activité en réseau, apprend les fonctionnalités des outils et expérimente des manières de travailler avec ses élèves au fur et à mesure que l’activité avance. Les enseignants font remarquer que cela leur permet de trouver réponse à leurs questions plus facilement, car ils sont soutenus tout au long de leur démarche. De plus, en expérimentant en contexte de classe, les enseignants mentionnent qu’il leur est plus facile de transférer ces acquis dans des contextes similaires.

L’ouverture de sa classe à des partenaires extrascolaires

L’accès limité aux écoles et les fermetures des infrastructures culturelles et scientifiques ont obligé les partenaires éducatifs à se réinventer. pour enrichir l’environnement d’apprentissage des classes (Allaire et Dumoulin, 2017; Allaire et Lusignan, 2015). Une recrudescence importante de propositions venant de partenaires culturels (musées, théâtres, auteurs, etc.) et scientifiques a, sans surprise, été observée.

Ces partenaires souhaitent joindre les classes à distance et demandent du soutien pour formaliser leurs contenus en lien avec le Programme de formation de l’école québécoise (PFÉQ) et concevoir des activités qui répondent aux enjeux d’interaction avec les élèves.

L’expertise de l’ÉER en médiation culturelle et scientifique par l’adaptation des activités à distance interclasses est donc mise à profit.

De nouvelles séquences d’activités ont été développées en ce sens avec ces partenaires pour permettre à un plus grand nombre de classes d’être rejointes. L’accès à des ressources éducatives constitue un élément sur lequel miser, car il permet aux classes de régions diversifiées d’être en contact avec ces organismes fort enrichissants. Des activités ont été proposées directement aux jeunes qui se sont branchés de la maison plutôt qu’en classe comme c’est habituellement le cas (École branchée, 2020). À la différence d’autres ressources, l’offre des activités en réseau ne se présente pas sous forme de vidéos ou d’activités en ligne. Il s’agit de favoriser les interactions entre les élèves, une façon de faire qui s’est avérée grandement appréciée par les parents et les élèves bien heureux de socialiser dans ce contexte. Sachant que la qualité de la relation enseignant-élève agit directement sur le niveau d’engagement des élèves ou qu’elle l’influence indirectement en agissant sur la motivation (Drolet, 2018), la distance, doit demeurer avant tout « humaine »!

La collaboration entre les milieux scolaires et universitaires

C’est dans le besoin pressant d’offrir aux enseignants du préscolaire et du primaire des référents concrets sur l’apprentissage à distance que l’ÉER et la TELUQ ont développé, en collaboration avec d’autres acteurs scolaires, la formation J’enseigne à distance. Les pratiques novatrices ont inspiré de nouveaux moyens de (re)penser l’école et s’avèrent fort encourageantes dans le développement de collaborations futures entre le milieu universitaire et le milieu scolaire. D’une part, la proposition de contenus numériques et de réseaux professionnels appropriés, notamment les conseillers pédagogiques du RÉCIT, permettront aux enseignants de rester à l’affût des éléments nouveaux liés à leur domaine professionnel actuel ou futur et de répondre à leurs besoins en matière de formation continue (Pelletier et coll., sous presse; MEES, 2019). D’autre part, au printemps 2020, l’ouverture de la classe s’est élargie avec la participation d’étudiants du baccalauréat en enseignement des Arts de l’Université Laval qui ont poursuivi leur stage en virtuel en animant des activités pour les élèves à la maison. L’audace comme moteur d’innovation invite à repenser les cadres actuels et à surmonter les défis qu’on croit des barrières. En sortant du cadre habituel pour intégrer des activités plus courtes aux classes, mais qui ont comme retombées l’appropriation de la classe en réseau, les enseignants sont habilités à travailler autrement. Toutefois, un défi demeure : faire évoluer l’enseignant vers des activités plus intenses et signifiantes, pour rendre plus actifs les élèves dans leurs apprentissages.

De quoi sera composé l’après-pandémie dans le monde scolaire?

Le présent article a mis en lumière des pistes de réflexion qu’il serait possible de concrétiser dès maintenant. Les retombées de la collaboration des différents milieux et des pratiques enseignantes pour soutenir les apprentissages des élèves dans J’enseigne à distance sont ainsi considérables en ce qui a trait aux connaissances et aux pra-

tiques nouvelles des enseignantes dans un tel contexte (Pelletier et coll., sous presse). Pourtant, des questions demeurent quant à la place que pourra prendre la classe comodale (avec des élèves en classe et à la maison). Pourrait-elle devenir une nouvelle possibilité lors d’intempéries ou encore pour des élèves retirés, malades, en voyage ou présentant des cheminements atypiques? Pourrait-on offrir de nouvelles organisations de classes qui répondraient plus adéquatement aux besoins des apprenants?

Enfin, la classe à distance soulève aussi les limites et la complexité de l’évaluation centrée sur les connaissances, pourtant déjà révélée avant la pandémie (Conseil supérieur de l’éducation, 2018). Une évaluation contextualisée et authentique (Tremblay et Laferrière, 2021), à savoir réellement centrée sur les compétences, doit aussi être mise de l’avant en explorant des modalités différentes pour des usages gagnants du numérique dans l’évaluation. est celle de leur milieu scolaire qui bénéficiait en mars 2020 de ressources tant numériques qu’humaines pour soutenir l’apprentissage et l’enseignement à distance1.

Tout ce qui a été accompli pour répondre au contexte sanitaire a certes été favorisé par les moyens mis à disposition de tous, mais il serait malhonnête de laisser croire pour autant que cela s’est fait sans heurts ni résistances.

C’est une première pour les générations actuelles d’avoir dû affronter à une pandémie planétaire ayant eu autant d’effets sur tous les aspects de la société. En effet, du jour au lendemain, nous avons été emportés dans une histoire dont le déroulement et l’issue nous échappaient.

Les décisions gouvernementales et les aléas des mesures sanitaires impliquant la fermeture abrupte des écoles ont entraîné la perturbation des repères quotidiens dans tous

les milieux scolaires. Plusieurs enseignants nous ont d’ailleurs rapporté un grand sentiment d’impuissance et de perte d’efficacité professionnelle allant même, pour certains, jusqu’à une crise d’identité2. L’acte d’enseigner étant avant tout une affaire de relations, le passage à l’enseignement à distance a donc été pour beaucoup une profonde remise en question de la pertinence de leur rôle.

Le legs de la pandémie sur l’éducation nous préoccupe d’autant que le milieu de l’éducation était déjà fragilisé par un taux d’abandon de la profession inquiétant3 et par un important taux de décrochage des élèves4. À ces préoccupations s’ajoute un constat : depuis des années existent des initiatives visant à transformer l’École, mais elles n’ont pas trouvé d’écho assez fort pour inspirer massivement le changement dans le système scolaire.

viendrons-nous à trouver un équilibre entre passé et présent malgré une vision encore floue du futur et l’immense fatigue qui affecte les milieux scolaires? Saurons-nous éviter une « renormalisation » scolaire qui nous ramènerait inévitablement à une position précaire?

Saurons-nous tirer profit de ce qui sera, au bout du compte, une parenthèse dans la longue histoire de l’École, pour faire émerger des propositions de remplacement ou complémentaires?

Il était une fois l’École ou le mirage de la normalité

À quoi fait-on référence quand on parle de normalité scolaire? À un lieu physique précis, celui de l’espace de la classe ou plus largement de l’établissement scolaire; à une organisation du temps très cadrée, celle du calendrier scolaire et de l’horaire de classe; à des formes d’enseignement où les interactions sont en présence, y compris l’évaluation. Quand certains rêvent d’un retour à la normale, c’est de cette époque dont ils sont nostalgiques. Deux raisons semblent expliquer cette attitude de résistance : premièrement, l’alternance distance-présence impliquant l’enseignement à distance à partir de l’automne 2020 n’a pas touché de la même manière tous les enseignants. Pour certains, il n’existait donc pas de besoin qui les incite à questionner ou à modifier leurs pratiques. Deuxièmement, d’autres ont considéré qu’il n’y avait pas assez de bénéfices à les changer au regard des difficultés rencontrées ou encore qu’ils se sentaient dépassés par l’ampleur de la tâche. Pourtant, malgré ces résistances, plusieurs ont accepté de voir la crise qu’ils traversaient comme une occasion de faire autrement et tout porte à croire que, pour eux, rien ne sera plus comme avant. En effet, les défis de l’enseignement à distance ont démontré la nécessité de scénariser la séquence d’apprentissage autour d’une intention pédagogique claire et de savoirs essentiels à prioriser en contexte, réflexe qui était loin d’être si naturel auparavant. De nouvelles approches et modalités d’interventions ont donc été expérimentées, ce qui a permis de constater souvent des effets positifs des changements apportés sur la réussite des élèves. À titre d’exemple, celui de la rétroaction : de nombreux enseignants s’entendent sur le fait que celle qu’ils donnent désormais à leurs élèves, optimisée par l’usage d’outils numériques (GoFormative, Wooclap, Nearpod, Flipgrid…), a gagné en efficacité et en utilité. En effet, d’une part, les outils numériques favorisent une rétroaction instantanée, ce qui permet d’agir rapidement auprès d’un élève ou d’un groupe. D’autre part, les élèves se sont montrés particulièrement réceptifs aux commentaires vocaux laissés par leurs enseignants car cela leur donnait l’impression de recevoir des conseils qu’ils auraient obtenus lors d’un dialogue un à un. Grâce à cette ouverture et à cette prise de risque de la part de certains enseignants, ils ont pu trouver des réponses concrètes à des situations problématiques, ce qui a eu pour conséquence un regain de confiance et d’estime de soi dans leur capacité d’innovation.

Aussi, ce que nous avons remarqué dans notre école, c’est que certains enseignants n’étaient pas forcément des experts en technologie. Cependant, ils ont su s’autoformer ou solliciter les ressources pour ajuster leurs pratiques5. Les initiatives inspirantes de ces enseignants6 suffiront-elles néanmoins pour provoquer le changement auprès de leurs collègues, et rêvons un peu… auprès des instances ministérielles? Localement, pour encourager l’innovation et la porter plus loin, nous recommandons que les directions scolaires tiennent compte des effets positifs du partage de pratiques entre pairs et de la collaboration pédagogique entre collègues. Elles devraient aussi mettre en place des structures qui les favorisent (mentorat, groupe d’entraide professionnelle, communauté d’apprentissage professionnelle, rencontre d’accompagnement pédagogique, etc.).

Il était une fois des élèves qui apprenaient à être compétents

Dans les médias, nous entendons souvent parler des élèves qui ont cumulé des retards importants, qui ont perdu leur motivation ou qui ont développé des problèmes de santé mentale. Ces propos nous amènent à faire deux constats : d’une part, ces élèves n’étaient pas suffisamment outillés pour faire face à ce chamboulement des pratiques pédagogiques. D’autre part, a contrario, cette crise semble avoir eu des impacts positifs sur certains. Revenons à il y a plus de vingt ans au Québec : à cette époque, le milieu scolaire a vécu une profonde réforme des programmes qui s’est traduite par la mise en place d’un enseignement et d’une approche évaluative centrés sur le développement de compétences tant disciplinaires que transversales.

Par ailleurs, depuis quelques années, nombre d’études internationales ont souligné la nécessité de développer des compétences qui permettraient aux élèves de faire face aux principaux défis de notre époque, compétences qui ont été identifiées comme celles du xxie siècle. Ironie du sort, la crise actuelle a montré la nécessité absolue de développer ces compétences transversales, tant décriées et mises

… depuis des années existent des initiatives visant à transformer l’École, mais elles n’ont pas trouvé d’écho assez fort pour inspirer massivement le changement dans le système scolaire. de côtés il y a vingt ans. On a d’ailleurs constaté, par exemple, que les élèves qui avaient développé avant la pandémie leur capacité à résoudre des problèmes, leur pensée créative et leur autonomie, avaient un net avantage sur ceux qui n’avaient pas autant d’habiletés au niveau de l’organisation de leur travail. Durant cette pandémie, nos élèves auront certainement beaucoup appris, ayant été confrontés à des situations inconnues de leurs prédécesseurs. Il sera donc primordial que le réseau de l’éducation reconnaisse et promeuve la pertinence de ces compétences auprès de tous les intervenants scolaires, quitte à les actualiser au regard de ce qui a été vécu depuis un an. Il sera aussi essentiel qu’on les intègre dans le parcours de formation initiale et continue des enseignants parce qu’il ne suffira plus que ceux-ci en facilitent l’acquisition chez leurs élèves. Il faudra également qu’ils les possèdent eux-mêmes, d’où l’importance de soutenir les activités de développement professionnel sur une base continue et le déploiement de communautés d’apprentissage professionnelles sur une base locale.

Et si le meilleur était à venir dans le prochain épisode?

Beaucoup d’initiatives ont été mises en place par les directions d’établissements scolaires et par le ministère de l’Éducation pour soutenir la formation des enseignants et pour rattraper les retards importants que certains élèves auraient subis dans leurs apprentissages. Voici ce que nous aimerions voir perdurer dans les prochaines années : • l’importance accordée au design pédagogique7 en tenant compte des savoirs essentiels et de nouvelles modalités d’évaluation ; • la confiance accordée au jugement professionnel des enseignants www.edcan.ca/fr/magazine

en ce qui concerne l’évaluation des apprentissages8 : mettre l’accent sur la croissance plutôt que sur la performance, bref se détacher du résultat chiffré pour comprendre la progression de l’élève; • la prise de conscience que la réussite scolaire est une responsabilité partagée et collective : lien école-famille, coéducation9, etc.; • l’aide et l’accompagnement en classe par des spécialistes en pédagogie (conseillers, consultants ou autres ressources) • l’assouplissement de l’organisation scolaire : télétravail, parcours des élèves, etc.; • le tutorat qui s’est traduit de différentes manières dans notre milieu : création d’un espace réussite dans les matières de base animé par des enseignants et des orthopédagogues; assistance à l’organisation et à la motivation des élèves par des éducateurs spécialisés; recrutement de plusieurs intervenants pour aider les élèves avec des problématiques plus « profondes », notamment avec la zoothérapie; • la collaboration et le partage au-delà des frontières : formations en ligne qui permettent une mutualisation des expériences et des expertises, reconnaissance de la force de l’intelligence collective; • du temps dédié à la formation continue et au développement de la mentalité de croissance; • la reconnaissance de l’autoformation; • une attention accrue à la bienveillance et à l’intelligence émotionnelle : développement global tenant compte du savoir-être; • le changement de regard sur le numérique en classe : c’est un auxiliaire à l’apprentissage et à l’enseignement et non une solution miracle.

À quelques semaines de la fin de cette année scolaire très mouve­mentée, nous aimerions imaginer un dénouement positif qui évitera l’évaporation cognitive d’ici septembre 2021. Tout ce que nous avons gagné durant cette crise doit servir à transformer l’École pour qu’elle s’ancre enfin dans son époque. Antoine de SaintExupéry a écrit : « Si tu veux construire un bateau, ne rassemble pas tes hommes et femmes pour leur donner des ordres, pour expliquer chaque détail, pour leur dire où trouver chaque chose. Si tu veux construire un bateau, fais naître dans le cœur de tes hommes et femmes le désir de la mer. ». C’est notre plus grand souhait pour l’avenir. REVENIR À LA NORMALE?

Repenser le système éducatif pour plus d’équité, de diversité et d’inclusion : un pari possible?

élèves marginalisés durant la pandémie de coronavirus peut-il servir de pierre angulaire pour repenser notre système éducatif?

Selon Audrey Azoulay, directrice générale de l’UNESCO, les perturbations provoquées par la crise sanitaire dans le monde de l’éducation seraient d’une ampleur jamais vue. D’une part, les adaptations apportées aux établissements d’enseignement ont secoué les principes d’égalité des chances en mettant au jour les privilèges de certains élèves et la défavorisation d’autres. Les personnes socioéconomiquement désavantagées, les personnes racisées, allophones, autochtones ou membres des communautés LGBTQ2+ ont été proportionnellement plus touchées par les effets du confinement et de l’enseignement à distance. D’autre part, une prise de conscience grandissante à propos de la responsabilité individuelle et institutionnelle de garantir un plein accès à l’enseignement pour tous semble gagner du terrain chez les personnes enseignantes et les directions d’établissement. Devant ces constats, il

importe de se demander : que peut-il être fait, dans les établissements d’enseignement, que ce soit d’un point de vue individuel ou institutionnel, pour faciliter l’accès et le parcours des élèves s’identifiant à la diversité? Est-ce que les expériences vécues durant la pandémie pourraient devenir le moteur de changements institutionnels durables en matière d’équité, de diversité et d’inclusion?

Avant d’explorer les pistes d’actions individuelles et collectives permettant de mettre de l’avant la mission d’égalisation des chances dans les établissements d’enseignement, revenons sur les principes qui la guident : l’équité, la diversité et l’inclusion.

plus vulnérables sans pour autant accentuer l’écart entre les plus faibles et les plus forts (Rawls, 1987). En éducation et formation, l’équité est la résultante de pratiques pédagogiques et structurelles qui tiennent compte des différentes caractéristiques des groupes sociaux dans la perspective d’offrir des chances équivalentes aux membres de chacun de ces groupes (Solar, 2007).

La diversité, quant à elle, consiste en l’éventail des conditions de vie, de modes d’expressions et de vécus de différentes populations en fonction de facteurs tels que l’âge, la culture, la race, la scolarité, le genre, le handicap, l’orientation sexuelle, le statut d’immigration, le lieu de résidence, la langue et la religion, etc. (Condition féminine Canada, 2020). En éducation et formation, il est souhaité que la diversité soit reconnue au sein des établissements. Pour réfléchir à la diversité, il importe de cerner les différences entre les individus.

La tendance des dernières années dans les établissements d’enseignement était plutôt d’essayer d’invisibiliser les différences, sans doute dans un souci d’égalité, ou encore par respect pour les élèves.

Ce faisant, les inégalités prenaient encore plus d’ampleur. On sait maintenant que les différences bien inventoriées nous informent des inégalités de privilèges entre les groupes. Il serait futile de parler de diversité sans parler d’injustice. Reconnaitre la diversité permet donc d’appliquer les principes d’équité pour permettre aux populations désavantagées au plan des privilèges de vivre une expérience similaire à celles de leurs confrères et consœurs.

Finalement, le nouvel acronyme EDI ajoute à son arc la dimension de l’inclusion. Elle implique la valorisation des forces uniques des personnes et des groupes. Lorsqu’elle se sent incluse, une personne Le Réseau Édcan | juin 2021 • ÉDUCATION CANADA 39

se sent à l’aise d’exprimer son être authentique (idées, perceptions, antécédents, etc.). Elle se sent accueillie, respectée, valorisée, interreliée, épanouie et en sécurité.

Bien que plusieurs instances aient mis à jour leurs politiques en lien avec l’inclusion, il demeure pertinent de rappeler les éléments clés qui distinguent les établissements scolaires inclusifs. Ces derniers : • offrent un accès à l’éducation équitable pour toutes et tous en insufflant souplesse et créativité dans les parcours scolaires et dans l’accompagnement des élèves dans différentes voies de réussite; • s’adaptent à l’ensemble des besoins des élèves en ajustant et en adaptant les encadrements, les politiques d’accueil et les pratiques pédagogiques; • privilégient la recherche de solutions collectives pour répondre aux besoins individuels; • tirent profit de la diversité culturelle et sociale au sein de toute la communauté et la conçoivent comme une richesse ; • s’intéressent au développement d’une société plus juste (CSE, 2010; 2017).

Passivité/Participation active :

En éducation, le trio équité, diversité et inclusion vise fondamentalement à cerner, puis à corriger des situations injustes afin de permettre une plus grande égalité des chances, pour les élèves tout comme pour les membres du personnel.

La participation active mise sur l’établissement d’un climat propice à l’apprentissage dans lequel chaque membre du groupe se sent respecté. Cela suppose d’abord de porter une attention particulière à la relation pédagogique et aux interactions entre les élèves. L’instauration de structures coopératives permet aux élèves issus de groupes dominés d’occuper des rôles différents de ceux dans lesquels ils sont habituellement confinés.

L’EDI : une responsabilité individuelle

Impuissance/Partage du pouvoir :

Plusieurs auteurs affirment que l’implantation des principes d’EDI doit être amorcée par des directives institutionnelles (nous y reviendrons).

Malgré cela, nous croyons que le geste individuel des pédagogues demeure essentiel.

Pour mettre en place les principes d’équité, de diversité et d’inclusion en salle de classe, nous suggérons l’emploi de la pédagogie de l’équité (Solar, 2007). Les racines féministes de cette pédagogie invitent à donner aux femmes une meilleure représentativité dans la pensée éducative. Ses origines antiracistes rappellent de considérer la problématique de la race dans les interventions ; tandis que ses fondements de libération préconisent une analyse critique du rôle de l’éducation afin de permettre l’émancipation sociale des classes dominées. La pédagogie de l’équité souhaite valider les différences et contester les a priori des normes établies par la société, permettant alors à tout un chacun de se sentir valorisé dans sa diversité et son potentiel. En outre, les personnes enseignantes qui espèrent améliorer l’expérience éducative de leurs élèves en mettant l’accent sur la division sociale des ressources, du pouvoir et du savoir sont invitées à positionner leur pratique sur quatre axes : parole/silence, omission/ reconnaissance, passivité/participation active et impuissance/partage du pouvoir. Voici comment cela peut se concrétiser :

Parole/silence :

Donner la parole aux groupes marginalisés, souvent murés dans leur silence, les aide à sortir de l’invisibilité et à se sentir considérés.

Pour favoriser la parole, il importe d’inclure des stratégies misant sur la prise de parole, tant orale qu’écrite, dans le but d’encourager les échanges en petits groupes et de stimuler le partage d’expériences.

Omission /Reconnaissance :

Cet axe concerne l’omission de certains groupes dominés ou marginalisés dans les discours et dans le matériel pédagogique, en visant une reconnaissance de leur apport, de leurs savoirs, de leurs expériences.

Pour favoriser la reconnaissance, la personne enseignante offre un espace pédagogique pour légitimer le vécu et pour critiquer les savoirs non inclusifs ou non représentatifs de la diversité.

Finalement, le partage du pouvoir met l’accent sur le changement social. Par conséquent, en plus de donner une plus grande place aux apprenants en salle de classe, la personne enseignante tente de démystifier les savoirs enseignés en expliquant leurs construits, leurs forces et limites et, par le fait même, favorise le développement d’une pensée critique.

Repenser le système éducatif : une responsabilité institutionnelle

Appliquer les principes d’égalité des chances et d’EDI demeure cependant surtout la responsabilité des établissements d’enseignement.

L’UNESCO (1998) est claire à ce sujet. Elle rend explicite, à l’intérieur de sa Déclaration mondiale sur l’enseignement supérieur pour le xxie siècle, la responsabilité des établissements scolaires dans la mise en œuvre de la mission et de la fonction de l’enseignement supérieur en matière d’accès à l’équité : L’accès à l’enseignement supérieur de membres de certains groupes cibles spéciaux, comme les populations autochtones, les minorités culturelles et linguistiques, les groupes défavorisés, les peuples subissant une occupation et les personnes souffrant de handicaps, doit être activement facilité (…). Une aide matérielle spéciale et des solutions éducatives peuvent contribuer à surmonter les obstacles auxquels se heurtent ces groupes pour accéder à l’enseignement supérieur et poursuivre leurs études. (UNESCO, 1998, p. 5 et 6) Dans la même veine, le ministère de l’Éducation du Québec (1998), dans sa Politique d’intégration scolaire et d’éducation interculturelle, souligne à son tour la responsabilité des institutions au regard de l’égalité des chances et ajoute qu’il devrait s’agir d’un objectif fondamental pour le milieu de l’éducation.

Pour assumer cette responsabilité institutionnelle eut égard à l’égalité des chances, Riehl (2000) affirme que les chefs d’établissement doivent utiliser leur leadership afin de mobiliser la communauté autour d’enjeux liés à la mise en place de pratiques d’EDI en milieu scolaire. ment à la situation qui nous intéresse puisqu’il dépasse la portée de l’organisation et propose des changements sociaux. Ce type de leadership remet carrément en question les façons d’utiliser le pouvoir et les privilèges créant ou perpétuant l’iniquité et l’injustice : il souhaite déconstruire la reproduction des inégalités par la transformation de la structure scolaire et sociale. Les leaders de type transformatifs proposent des changements favorisant l’équité. À titre d’exemple, ces changements pourraient amener l’institution à prendre conscience du pouvoir et des privilèges détenus par certains membres du personnel (par exemple, des cadres vis-à-vis des employés de soutien, des hommes par rapport aux femmes, des personnes s’identifiant à la majorité par rapport à celles racisées, etc. (Magnan et coll. 2018).

Concrètement, c’est le rôle de l’organisation de mettre en place un plan d’action en matière d’EDI, soit une ligne directrice institutionnelle en matière d’EDI sur laquelle s’appuieraient des actions concrètes pour provoquer des changements plus profonds et durables.

Mais si un établissement souhaite mettre sur pied un tel plan, par où doit-il commencer ?

Mettre en place un plan en matière d’EDI : par où commencer?

La création d’un plan d’EDI a habituellement pour étape préalable la formation d’un comité institutionnel qui se penchera sur les questions d’équité, de diversité et d’inclusion. Ce comité, en plus de compter des apprenants et apprenantes et des membres de tous les corps d’emploi, doit impérativement être formé de personnes issues d’un ou de plusieurs groupes marginalisés. « Devant un problème à résoudre, les groupes diversifiés arrivent souvent à de meilleures solutions que les groupes peu diversifiés, puisqu’ils risquent moins d’adopter un parti pris et qu’ils abordent souvent un plus grand éventail de possibilités. » (Fines-Neushield, 2020).

Une fois ce comité formé, une première mission sera de recenser les différentes enquêtes sur l’état de la situation au sein de l’établissement pour dresser un portrait clair des obstacles à l’EDI. Tel que proposé dans l’énoncé de vision en matière d’EDI de l’Université de Montréal (2020), un plan en matière d’EDI devrait contenir minimalement : 1. les engagements de l’établissement envers les personnes d’un ou de plusieurs groupes désavantagés ; 2. les principes guidant les actions de l’établissement pour respecter ses engagements ; 3. des objectifs stratégiques ainsi que des pistes d’actions concrètes à mettre en place pour les atteindre.

Des axes d’interventions ou des secteurs d’activités pourraient également être définis afin d’appliquer les principes de l’EDI. En voici quelques-uns : • L’environnement physique : est-ce que toutes les installations sont accessibles pour toutes et tous (suivant les principes de l’accessibilité universelle)? Est-ce que la signalisation est multilingue ?

• Les services et activités aux élèves : les services offerts sontils adaptés à tous les élèves? Les activités proposées sont-elles variées? Sont-elles accueillantes pour tous les élèves?

• La gouvernance : la diversité est-elle représentée parmi le groupe de personnes occupant des postes de gestionnaire et de direction, par exemple? Les politiques en place sont-elles inclusives?

• Les communications : l’affichage au sein de l’établissement est-il inclusif? Les personnes issues de la diversité peuvent-elles s’y reconnaître? L’écriture utilisée est-elle inclusive?

• La pédagogie (planification, enseignement/apprentissage, évaluation, relation pédagogique, gestion de classe, réussite) : les contextes et modalités d’enseignement, d’apprentissage et www.edcan.ca/fr/magazine

d’évaluation tiennent-ils compte de la diversité des profils et de la variété des besoins? Les modes d’évaluations sont-ils équitables?

• La dotation et la gestion des ressources humaines : Le processus d’embauche (p. ex., le tri des cv, les grilles d’évaluation et les tests d’aptitudes) est-il exempt de biais et adapté à tous et toutes? L’affichage des postes représente-t-il les personnes issues de la diversité et permet-il de les rejoindre? Les conditions d’embauche excluentelles d’emblée certaines personnes?

• L’admission et le recrutement : Est-il possible de s’inscrire sans se déplacer? Un accompagnement est-il prévu tout au long du processus d’admission? Au préscolaire, au primaire et au secondaire, s’assure-t-on de ne pas exiger des élèves des preuve de citoyenneté (conformément à la Loi canadienne sur l’immigration et la protection des réfugiés) ? Au niveau des études supérieures, les tests de classement (p. ex., en langue) discriminent-ils une frange de la population estudiantine?

Outre ces différents axes d’intervention, un leadership fort, la collaboration entre les différentes instances de l’institution ainsi que la transparence sont essentielles à la mise en place et à la réussite d’un tel plan (Gouvernement du Canada, 2019). À l’heure actuelle, s’intéresser aux questions d’EDI n’est plus un choix, il s’agit d’une nécessité, d’une obligation morale. Les expériences et constats réalisés durant la pandémie de coronavirus donnent un second souffle à l’instauration de l’égalité des chances par les principes d’EDI. Pour le bien commun, la majorité dominante doit impérativement réaliser qu’elle détient des privilèges qui s’inscrivent dans des mécanismes de discrimination systémique historique. Changer nos méthodes pédagogiques est un premier pas dans cette direction, mais mobiliser l’institution dans un processus de révision de ses politiques, procédures et pratiques, en collaboration avec les personnes concernées, représente une fin en soi. En faisant une rétrospective de l’année 2020 d’un point de vue social, force est de constater que nous sommes à une époque où des changements profonds et durables peuvent et doivent être instaurés. REVENIR À LA NORMALE?

parents d’élèves ont été aux premières loges, souvent désemparés, pour constater les effets de la pandémie et des changements dans la fréquentation scolaire sur leurs enfants. Dans ces circonstances exceptionnelles, les parents ont entre autres observé un manque de motivation des jeunes, des difficultés d’adaptation à l’école à distance et une baisse des résultats scolaires après la réception du premier bulletin, selon les résultats de sondages réalisés par la Fédération des comités de parents du Québec (FCPQ) depuis le début de l’année scolaire 2020-2021. À titre d’exemple, des parents dont les enfants réussissent bien à l’école en temps normal ont constaté une baisse des résultats scolaires de leurs jeunes, qui ont souffert du manque de socialisation et d’activités motivantes. Ces parents, sans offre de soutien supplémentaire pendant plusieurs mois, se sont sentis isolés et impuissants pour accompagner leurs enfants vers la réussite.

Dès mai 2020, 63 % des 43 000 parents ayant participé à un sondage de la FCPQ indiquaient ne pas pouvoir offrir un encadrement et un soutien adéquats à leurs enfants dans un contexte d’école à distance. Les parents ont rapidement tiré la sonnette d’alarme pour demander du soutien au milieu scolaire et au gouvernement.

Des ajustements pour les écoles et les familles

Nous devons toutefois souligner que, malgré les difficultés et les choix effectués dans le reste du pays, le gouvernement québécois a pris la décision de rouvrir les écoles primaires à l’extérieur du Grand Montréal au printemps et a priorisé de garder toutes les écoles ouvertes depuis la rentrée 2020-2021, sauf en cas d’éclosions. Pour les

parents, l’école en présence est garante d’une plus grande réussite des élèves, notamment des élèves en difficulté ou ayant des besoins particuliers. En effet, le personnel scolaire est davantage en mesure de remarquer les difficultés et d’offrir du soutien et des services lorsque les élèves sont physiquement à l’école. L’école assure aussi un filet social pour les élèves vulnérables qu’il est primordial de garder en place. Lorsque les écoles ont fermé au printemps 2020, de nombreux élèves bénéficiant de services éducatifs et de soutien personnalisés se sont retrouvés sans cet accompagnement.

Les élèves de 3e à 5e secondaire (10e et 12e année) qui n’étaient physiquement à l’école qu’un jour sur deux ont été particulièrement touchés par les baisses de résultats et le manque de motivation. L’école à distance a chamboulé les modes d’apprentissage et la concentration, ce qui a eu un effet sur les résultats scolaires et le bienêtre des élèves.

Un prudent retour à la normale

La perspective du retour à la « normale », pour nos écoles et l’ensemble de la société, est donc accueillie avec soulagement par plusieurs. Elle est cependant vue avec appréhension par d’autres. La normale ne signifie pas le meilleur dans tous les domaines et pour tout le monde.

La pandémie a exacerbé des problèmes qui existaient déjà. Nous pouvons penser à la pénurie de personnel scolaire et à la désuétude de bâtiments, qui sont discutées dans l’espace public et qui méritent l’attention des décideurs. Le retour à la « normale » ramène ces défis et plusieurs autres sur la table.

Communiquer pour mieux coéduquer

qui a été mis en lumière pendant la pandémie : les communications entre l’école et les familles. Dans l’impossibilité de se rendre à l’école pour rencontrer les enseignantes et enseignants, beaucoup de parents ont constaté que les communications bidirectionnelles entre l’école et la maison peuvent être difficiles. Il s’agit parfois d’un manque de volonté de communiquer d’un côté ou de l’autre, mais d’autres facteurs peuvent aussi expliquer ces difficultés, tels que le manque de temps, le choix du moyen de communication ou le manque d’information sur l’importance de ces communications.

Pourtant, l’implication et la collaboration de tous les adultes entourant l’enfant est un facteur clé de sa réussite. Chacun a son rôle à jouer pour accompagner les élèves, c’est ce qu’on appelle la coéducation. La compréhension de son rôle et du rôle des autres est primordiale pour mener à bien cette mission. C’est pourquoi il faut défaire les silos entre l’école et la maison, pour le bénéfice des élèves.

Pourquoi la participation des parents est-elle importante? De nombreuses études montrent l’importance de l’engagement parental dans la réussite éducative et une des formes que peut prendre cet engagement est la communication avec l’école (Beauchesne, 2021).

La pandémie est un obstacle qui a perturbé nos façons de faire, mais nous pouvons aussi la voir comme une occasion de cibler des problèmes et d’améliorer les processus dans le milieu scolaire.

Les parents ont leur mot à dire et ont leur place à l’école, en tant que premiers responsables de l’éducation de leurs enfants, mais aussi parce que leur engagement est porteur de réussite pour les élèves. Ce fait démontré est cependant méconnu, non seulement des équipesécoles, mais aussi des parents eux-mêmes.

Un grand nombre de parents ont toutefois réalisé pendant la pandémie que leur implication dans l’éducation de leurs jeunes et dans le milieu scolaire était nécessaire et que leurs expériences et expertises pouvaient apporter beaucoup.

Les parents ne sont pas des spectateurs

des discussions et des solutions et n’accepteront plus d’être des spectateurs du milieu scolaire. Nous entamons dès maintenant une réflexion sur le retour à la normale de l’école et sur les façons d’améliorer cette normalité en réfléchissant à ces questions : • Quels changements survenus pendant la pandémie devrait-on garder?

• Quelles vieilles habitudes ne devraient pas être incluses dans la nouvelle normalité?

Les parents veulent et doivent faire partie de cette conversation. La FCPQ consulte les comités de parents qu’elle représente pour préparer le retour à la normale, tirer des leçons de la pandémie et de l’école à distance et ainsi proposer des améliorations au milieu scolaire, pour le bienêtre et la réussite de nos jeunes.

La matrice du développement professionnel Entre soutien et accompagnement de la formation continue Œuvrant en éducation depuis le début des années 2000, Maxime Pelchat a enseigné les sciences humaines au secondaire dans la région de Québec.

Il s’intéresse de près au numérique et à ses effets, autant dans l’espace scolaire que dans la société en général. À titre de stratège numérique pour le CADRE21, il contribue au rayonnement du développement professionnel en éducation francophone.

UN ÉLÉMENT QUE la pandémie semble avoir mis en lumière est la nécessité, pour tout intervenant du milieu éducatif, d’entretenir une « gymnastique de développement professionnel » permettant de rester à l’affût de nouvelles approches, stratégies et ressources pédagogiques pouvant inclure le numérique.

Cette posture professionnelle pourrait faciliter le réinvestissement rapide des apprentissages ou simplifier l’appropriation de nouveaux outils, sans donner le sentiment de devoir prendre les bouchées doubles ou triples en peu de temps.

Le développement professionnel est d’ailleurs maintenant une partie intégrante du cheminement de carrière de tout professionnel. Pour certains, il s’agit de répondre à des exigences normatives de la part de leur ordre professionnel; pour d’autres, d’assurer de façon autonome une mise à jour de leur pratique.

Comme le mentionne Tardif (2018), au fil du temps, ce qu’un enseignant et d’autres professionnels ont appris à l’université lors de leur formation n’est aujourd’hui que la base nécessaire à l’apprentissage et à la maîtrise du savoir professionnel en cours de carrière. La question est donc de déterminer le « où », le « quand » et le « comment » permettant d’assurer ce développement professionnel.

Aux termes d’une recension des écrits importante dans le domaine du développement professionnel, Uwamariya et Mukamurera (2005) concluent sur « une idée commune » pour le milieu de l’éducation : « (...) le développement professionnel est un processus de changement, de transformation, par lequel

les enseignants parviennent peu à peu à améliorer leur pratique, à maîtriser leur travail et à se sentir à l’aise dans leur pratique » (Uwamariya et Mukamurera, 2005, p.

148).

C’est dans cette optique que cet article souhaite présenter une matrice du développement professionnel (Figure 1) développée par le CADRE21 et pouvant être abordée autant du point de vue du professionnel souhaitant prendre en main son développement que de l’angle du gestionnaire qui souhaite offrir des ressources en ce sens. La matrice permet aux différents acteurs de répertorier une grande variété de formes d’accompagnement dans une démarche de formation continue.

Les bases de la matrice

Autant le moment, le sujet abordé que l’objectif poursuivi permettent de déterminer la forme du développement professionnel à mettre de l’avant. La matrice présente quatre quadrants qui reposent d’une part sur le type de soutien qui sera fourni au professionnel et de l’autre sur le cadre de réalisation associé à l’activité de développement professionnel.

Dans certains contextes, ces activités peuvent se réaliser de façon totalement autonome (autoformations en ligne, lectures, cours à distance, etc.) ou de façon dirigée (formation par un expert, congrès, conférence, etc.). Les deux formes peuvent avoir lieu lors de périodes prévues à cet égard, in situ, lors de journées de perfectionnement consacrées à cette fin (journée pédagogique ou thématique, évènement annuel, etc.).

Mais il est aussi possible que ces activités se réalisent à d’autres moments choisis par le professionnel, selon son emploi du temps. Finalement, le choix du sujet peut être adapté aux besoins précis du professionnel (plan de développement, besoin ciblé, etc.) ou faire l’objet d’un consensus d’équipe ou d’un objectif de gestion.

Ainsi, le quadrant de la partie supérieure droite du schéma peut présenter un enseignant qui se fixe des objectifs personnels, en choisissant un sujet selon ses intérêts et dont les apprentissages pourront être réalisés à son rythme. échanges entre collègues, le quadrant de la partie supérieure gauche présente une approche où le sujet de la formation est contextualisé (selon la réalité du département, de l’équipe-matière, de l’équipeécole, etc.) et dont les apprentissages se feront dans un temps circonscrit et dans un lieu déterminé.

L’accompagnement

ou de l’animation par un conseiller pédagogique, des ateliers, des lectures, des cours universitaires, des évènements ponctuels. Plusieurs travaux, dont ceux de Richard (2017), ont permis de rassembler quelques caractéristiques que partagent les programmes de formation continue les plus efficaces (Figure 2). L’une d’elles mentionne l’importance d’avoir des formations fondées sur des données probantes.

Une fois les ressources déterminées et partagées de façon à répondre aux besoins de développement professionnel manifestés par les enseignants, la reconnaissance de temps consacré à ces activités devient incontournable. La crise mondiale actuelle prendra fin un jour. Souhaitons que les nouveaux apprentissages réalisés dans l’urgence puissent contribuer à bonifier les pratiques futures, mais il est surtout souhaitable qu’il s’agisse d’une occasion de valoriser davantage le développement professionnel au sein de l’ensemble de la profession enseignante, tous ordres confondus. Et si...

Quelle année nous venons de vivre! Et si tout ce que nous vivons présentement était en train de nous préparer à dispenser l’éducation que nous espérons depuis si longtemps? À mon humble avis, dans l’optique d’un retour à la normale, nous sommes à une croisée des chemins déterminante. Quand on pense au niveau d’engagement des élèves, au taux de réussite ou à la quantité non négligeable d’élèves ayant un rythme d’apprentissage différent avant et pendant la pandémie, quand on pense à la santé mentale des adultes et des élèves présentement, je me dis qu’il serait sage de réfléchir et de repenser la place et le sens de l’éducation. Le sens. Que visonsnous en éducation? On a souvent l’impression que les élèves viennent à l’école pour entrer dans le moule, pour obéir, pour faire le travail ou pour performer. À certains moments de l’année, on peut aussi avoir l’impression que les élèves viennent à l’école pour regarder les adultes travailler. Il faut répondre aux exigences du système après tout. Et si le système était au service des êtres humains qui le fréquentent? Pour créer l’école de l’après-pandémie, il importe de réfléchir aux finalités de l’éducation. Et si la visée ultime du système était de propulser l’être?

Voici, selon mon expérience en tant qu’accompagnateur, cinq concepts importants et quelques questions de fond pour propulser le système d’éducation dans l’après-pandémie :

Intégrité Il va sans dire qu’un système d’éducation de qualité nécessite un leadership d’impact. Pour moi, le 46 ÉDUCATION CANADA • juin 2021 | Le Réseau Édcan

leadership, c’est l’effet positif que nous avons sur notre devenir et sur le devenir des personnes autour de nous.

Dans mon vécu, le point de départ en leadership, c’est l’intégrité. On ne peut pas exiger des autres ce qu’on n’exige pas de soi-même. Les gens apprennent davantage de nos actions que de nos paroles. Qu’avons-nous modelé jusqu’à présent depuis le début de la pandémie? De façon bien constructive, la question se pose parce que les adultes et les élèves autour de nous nous regardent et, depuis un an, ils apprennent comment agir et réagir en contexte de pandémie. Être modèle, ça ne veut pas dire essayer d’être quelqu’un d’autre. C’est être pleinement soi-même et vivre intentionnellement selon ses valeurs.

Quelles valeurs guideront nos actions au quotidien dans l’après-pandémie?

Humilité Dans Awaken The Giant Within, Tony Robbins affirme : « La qualité de votre vie reflète la qualité des questions que vous vous posez ». Habituellement en éducation, nous nous posons peu de questions, car nous « savons ». Dans la dernière année, nous avons eu une occasion en or d’être des modèles d’apprenants pour nos élèves. C’est probablement la chose la plus importante que nous ayons enseignée à nos élèves. Qu’est-ce qu’on fait quand on ne sait pas? Nous devons avoir l’humilité de reconnaître que nous ne savons pas tout. L’humilité favorise la remise en question et le travail d’équipe.

Dans le doute, aurons-nous l’humilité de nous poser des questions comme : Qu’est-ce qui nous échappe présentement?

Interdépendance Si la pandémie nous a appris une chose, c’est que nous sommes interdépendants. Ce www.edcan.ca/fr/magazine

n’est qu’ensemble que nous pouvons la combattre. Nos actions ont un impact sur la réalité des autres et sur l’environnement. Qui ne se rappelle pas avoir vu les images de Venise où nous pouvions voir le fond de l’eau après très peu de temps d’inactivité humaine. Comment cette situation se transfère-t-elle à l’éducation? Pour voir clair, il faut parfois prendre une pause pour réfléchir. Comment mes gestes ontils un effet sur les autres et sur notre environnement de travail? La transformation de l’éducation, ça commence par soi. Je dois donc prendre soin de moi, pour toi, pour nous. Et tu dois prendre soin de toi, pour moi, pour nous.

Comment allons-nous prendre soin de nous afin d’améliorer l’éducation?

Persévérance En regardant le chemin parcouru jusqu’à maintenant, il est raisonnable d’affirmer que nous avons tous été déstabilisés par la pandémie. Mais quelle persévérance nous avons démontrée! Par exemple, certains disent qu’on a fait en quelques mois dix ans de progrès en matière d’intégration du numérique. D’autres affirment que la collaboration entre collègues n’a jamais été aussi présente. La pandémie nous aura permis de nous rallier autour de notre « pourquoi ». Parce que le « comment », lui, a changé. En effet, bon nombre de nos façons de faire ont été remises en question. Notre « pourquoi », quant à lui, donne son sens à tout ce que nous faisons et n’a jamais eu autant d’importance. Il est beaucoup plus facile de persévérer lorsque le « pourquoi » est clair.

humains ont besoin d’être placés dans des conditions favorables à leur épanouissement. L’innovation en éducation, nous le vivons, ce n’est pas une question d’outils ou de ressources. C’est une question de relations humaines, de processus et de pédagogie.

Dans l’école de l’après-pandémie, qu’est-ce qui change pour l’élève?

Le retour à la normale L’école de l’avant-pandémie n’existe plus. Or, nous en avons appris des choses au cours de la dernière année. Des choses que nous ne pouvons pas ignorer. En ce sens, j’aime bien cette citation de Platon : « On peut aisément pardonner à l’enfant qui a peur de l’obscurité; la vraie tragédie de la vie, c’est lorsque les hommes ont peur de la lumière ». Dans mon vécu en éducation, la peur nous prive du progrès beaucoup plus que les obstacles et les échecs.

Et si le retour à la normale signifiait un retour à l’humain?

N’ayons pas peur. Propulsons l’être. ÉC

Quel pourrait être notre « pourquoi » dans l’après-pandémie?

Innovation Le monde de l’éducation a changé de trajectoire en 2020. Des choses considérées comme immuables ont été les premières à bouger. Rappelons-nous, les épreuves ministérielles et les examens de fin d’année ont été annulés rapidement.

Cette année, les systèmes éducatifs poursuivent dans la même veine. On diminue l’importance de la performance et on se donne le temps d’apprendre. On donne une place à la trajectoire. Comme dans la gestion de la pandémie, la courbe est plus importante que les données du jour. La trajectoire, la progression des élèves est plus importante que leurs résultats un jour donné. Est-ce ça innover? La pandémie nous ramène à l’essentiel, au processus : l’humain en devenir. Les humains ne sont pas faits pour être isolés et mesurés. En personne ou en ligne. Bref, on ne réduit pas les humains à leurs résultats. Pour devenir qui ils sont, pour réaliser leur potentiel, les www.edcan.ca/fr/magazine

Top Tech Skills for Educators DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES have taken a more prominent role in Canadian classrooms in recent years, but COVID-19 has pushed technology centre stage, requiring educators and students to strengthen their digital skills and potentially reconsider their traditional roles.

In April of 2021, the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) released a new study, 21st Century Digital Skills: Competencies, innovations and curriculum in Canada, which examines, among other things, the top technical and human skills (or “soft skills”) required by educators and students.

A rapidly changing landscape

As the 2020/21 school year winds down and planning for the fall begins, uncertainty remains around the vaccine rollout and the coming term. What will the coming school year like? A return to in-class instruction, remote learning, or a mixture of both (hybrid learning)? What is certain is that the demand for digital skills will continue to grow.

When used skillfully as part of an educator’s toolkit, edtech possesses the ability to strengthen student engagement while encouraging academic success.

The rise of technology in classrooms is surfacing new pedagogical best practices that encourage better collaboration, improved interactivity, and greater flexibility for educators and their students. These methods and their accompanying skills are likely to have longlasting implications for educators who have adopted both in-class and online teaching responsibilities.

The 21st Century Digital Skills report, which draws on a series of interviews from subject matter experts across Canada, highlights the changing role of the K–12 educator to that of a “facilitator” of learning, which is a fundamental departure from the long-standing “sage on the stage” paradigm. As indicated by interview respondents, educational technologies have quickened the pace of this transition while also challenging outdated

policies surrounding the use of cell phones and other technologies in the classroom.

This shift calls on educators to cultivate new technical skills, but it also requires strong “human skills.” Study interviewees also noted that human skills (which was preferred to the term “soft skills,” and includes critical thinking, creativity, and adaptability) are not vulnerable to the impacts of automation, artificial intelligence, or technology obsolescence.

These skills and competencies are reaching new and more nuanced levels as technology deepens considerations around, for example, critical thinking and media literacy. As one educator in the study stated: “Media literacy now incorporates issues of fake news and how a student participates in a networked world.

It’s how a student understands that they’re engaging and exploring new content, thinking critically and leveraging a wide variety of inclusive texts, tools and modalities. So it’s really going beyond simply reading and consuming. Media literacy provides the space to recognize culturally sustaining communication methods and how to recognize bias and privilege.

Examining the rights, responsibilities and ethical implications of media in the creation of information and how, and to what extent, texts and tools amplify another’s narrative… it’s the understanding that technology enables all of this.”

– K–12 educator, Ontario With summer approaching, teachers who are interested in improving their technical skills can take advantage of a wide array of online courses in digital technologies, which include media literacy.

Top technical skills for educators

An analysis of study interviews identified the following list of both technical and human skills, ranked in descending order by frequency of mentions:

Digital literacy Typically refers to competency in using core technologies (this can range from the use of search engines, office productivity software, basic operating system functions, up to database usage, coding, and computational thinking) and involves the ability to find, evaluate, create, and share content online. As the world increasingly adopts digital technologies, higher standards of digital literacy are needed to fully participate. Educators can work to improve their digital literacy through various available online training resources, by participating on various platforms, and as part of professional learning communities.

Information/media literacy This involves understanding how and why a media message is constructed – as well as its impact. In addition to accessing media and information, there is also the need to be able to analyze it critically, evaluate different media, and to ultimately be able to use it effectively. Educators can find a variety of media literacy resources, curriculum guides, lesson plans, and video tutorials through provincial teaching accreditation bodies (e.g. Ontario College of Teachers) teacher associations, individual school boards or online at places such as mediasmarts.ca.

Learning Management Systems (LMS) fluency and awareness As teachers are increasingly required to use LMS environments such as Moodle and D2L to deliver teaching materials, receive assignments, and communicate with students and parents, it is crucial they feel comfortable navigating this software. In addition to training provided by school districts, there are professional development conferences, web tutorials, and online courses through Coursera or edX. Digital engagement Although “engagement” is typically understood to be linked to interpersonal communication, this term was often used by the educators we interviewed in discussing retention rates and maintaining student attention while using learning management systems or social media platforms such as Tik Tok, Snapchat, etc. It is not necessary for educators to become avid users of these social media platforms, but it is helpful for them to have an awareness of these growing trends and how they fit into the larger digital ecosystem.

Data and analytics competencies Digitization has greatly increased the amount of data available to decision makers, and this leads to increased interest in the use of analytics to make better “evidencebased decisions” and identify patterns that were not previously apparent. This is definitely the case in business and government, but it is also increasingly relevant in education. Increasingly, learning management systems are integrating data analytics for personalized learning insights as well as data dashboards (Gunawardena, 2017).

There is a growing field of data analytics training at postsecondary institutions as well as online courses for classroom teachers.¹ www.edcan.ca/magazine

Best practices

Technology use in the classroom today varies greatly among educators, their schools, regions, and even provinces, but best practices have emerged. Study interviewees and education experts have highlighted the following: • Exercise professional judgment as an educator to determine how best to support the individual learning needs of a student in both in-class and remote learning environments (technology is only a tool; the expertise of the teacher and the needs of their students are paramount).

• Appropriately identify essential learning priorities in curriculum and base assessments (formative, summative, or a mix of both).

• Emphasize learner self-assessment but also provide virtual and telephone conferences for descriptive feedback and discussion of next steps; this may include parent participation where appropriate. Ideally, provide several different options (with or without digital technology) to maximize accessibility.

• Consider and find ways to accommodate the unique needs or circumstances of individual students. This can include the use of digital accessibility features, like text-to-speech tools, text magnification options, and closed captioning.

• Find new and creative ways for learners to share what they are doing at home and generate ideas to demonstrate learning. These projects or demonstrated learning experiences can be shared through videoconferencing or LMS tools to enable peer-to-peer learning.

• Provide continual feedback on literacy and numeracy-related learning standards.

• Consider more formalized evaluation of prioritized learning standards for Grade 10–12 students (appropriate assessment measures should ensure students are familiar with testing and understand the requirements).

Looking to the future

While digital skills and new technology tools are important – and teachers need to receive both training and support to effectively work with these technologies – the subject experts consulted for ICTC’s 21st Century Digital Skills study noted that digital tools are part of a much larger educational transition. In this evolution, educators facilitate student development based on their individual needs and interests to help keep pace with a rapidly changing world. EC

Pandemic Perspectives from the Field A school leader’s journey

Kirk Linton is a K–9 school principal from Calgary, Alta. He earned his EdD in the Learning Sciences from the Werklund School of Education in 2019, combining his passion for educational research, leadership, and teaching. He is a proud father to Ben, Oliver, and Henry, who are his best teachers.

IN EARLY 2020, I sat in the revolving restaurant of the Calgary Tower on a cold January night to share a meal with a teacher and vice-principal from Tarui, Japan. We were celebrating the successful conclusion of a cultural exchange between our schools. Over the week, we had opened our school, billeted students in our homes, and shared rich cultural experiences. Through broken English and Japanese we told stories and forged bonds. Little did we know that within weeks, borders would close, and the COVID-19 pandemic would change all our lives fundamentally. Looking back, it is easy to see the ways we took that experience, and so many like it, for granted.

In early February, our school community would be thrown into disarray. One of our students returned from a trip to China and questions began to arise. Parent calls followed. What if the student had been exposed to this novel coronavirus? What if it came into the school? This previously distant disease became an unsettling and very present reality.

As anxiety rose, I worked with parents, staff, and my admin team to maintain calm while coping with crippling uncertainty myself. My responsibility to create a safe environment for children had never felt so challenging or elusive. Following guidance, we didn’t encourage the use of masks in our school, citing their limited effectiveness (if only we knew!) and scarce supply for healthcare workers. On Sunday, March 15 in the late afternoon, we watched a news conference announcing the closure of

physical schools effective Monday morning. We had no more notice of the closures than the families we served.

Overnight, we were thrust into this strange new reality. My wife was home sick with our three schoolaged children who were suddenly distance learning. I felt I had no choice but to go in to work to help guide my community through those tenuous early days of remote teaching and learning.

Our staff met in-person the next morning as we had always done. I naively felt prepared to lead. After all, I had spent years researching instructional leadership. In our meeting I told teachers to “get comfortable with being uncomfortable.” I am surprised now they didn’t walk out.

“Uncomfortable” was a grave underestimation of how they were feeling. A teacher with a compromised immune system contacted me that night to say he could not meet in person anymore. In that moment, my perspective changed. I realized that the very lives of my staff would be impacted by my decisions from here on out. The gravity of that responsibility sat heavy on my shoulders.

We scrambled to provide professional learning and resources to our teachers as they moved online.

We shared resources, PD was organized, and teachers worked together to troubleshoot new tech tools. In the end, our success pivoting to online learning was built on relationships rather than program. We worked tirelessly to reach out to families in those months. We reached out to one another. We focused on building community despite physical distance.

The pandemic has been one of the most dynamic, nerve-wracking, challenging, exhausting, and at times exciting experiences of my career as a school principal.

From moving classes online overnight in the spring, to riding the wave of uncertainty and fear about school reopening through the summer, to reinventing school around safety guidelines in the fall, to the constant threat of contact-tracing and isolations this winter, this school year has been like no other. It has been said that leadership is a rainy-day job. In the 2020–21 school year, we are living through a monsoon.

On that cold January night with our Japanese counterparts, we compared our school systems in the hopes that this cross-pollination of ideas would lead to positive change. We dreamed of future trips to Japan and the celebrations and fun that would ensue. While those dreams now seem distant, I often think of our friends from Japan and wonder how they experienced this global calamity, how they adapted their school and family life, and when we will meet again. We will certainly not take it for granted when we do.

The pandemic has tested our resilience and fortitude as educators, parents, and individuals. I am proud of how my school has served our community and how all teachers continue to show commitment to their students even in the face of personal health risks. Let us move forward through this pandemic with hope for better things to come while celebrating the gift of a new perspective. EC www.edcan.ca/magazine
