Letter from the Editors

Dear readers, chers lecteurs,

Although London didn’t get the memo, we’re fast approaching summer. The academic year is soon coming to a close and we can almost taste the summer holidays. Just a couple more weeks to go before we can close our exercise books and store our schoolbag away for the season.

As far as we are concerned, this last edition of the school year was no picnic. Don’t let the cover fool you: our team worked hard and delivered top quality information to honour one of the busiest seasons of the year. The second half of spring and the coming summer are marked with varied events and anniversaries, all worth celebrating.

And many other surprises! It is fair to say we have earned our rest – our chaise longue and iced tea await. And so, this marks a second successful year for Le Bilingue Londres. We have grown, in size and ambition, and we could not be prouder of the result. We are grateful you have been so many to read us throughout the school year. We felt the support. Until later, dear readers, chers lecteurs.

Enjoy your summer, L'équipe éditoriale de Le Bilingue

MODEL UNITED NATIONS OUR DELEGATES MADE US PROUD

Pupils from the secondary and upper school took part in the Model United Nations. It was a three day weekend where the mun club participated in several meetings in different countries.

Since September, the model United Nations prepared for this event, awaiting its arrival. During this weekend, the whole club made new friends and learnt many new things not only about the United Nations but also about themselves.

The pupils were split into groups in order to cover varied topics such as drugs and crime, the World Health Organisation or disarmament and international security. After this, each group was taken to a different place. The groups were also assigned countries, such as Mexico or Mozambique, andallthenationshadtoargueforwhatthey believed was right and then finish with an agreement which was later presented in the format of a working paper to the whole LondonSchoolofEconomiccommunity.

Among the 26 schools taking part in the competition, the school delegates ended up winning no less than nine awards including the prestigious Best Delegation Award (alongside Eton and Glenthorne High schools).Wealsoreceivedthelargestnumber of individual delegate awards out of all the twenty-sixschoolsthatwerepresented.

Aside from the educational part of this weekend, the whole club had a whole lot of fun and would like to say a big thank you to theirteacher,MrBuckow!

school gala: a night to remember for the performers exclusive interview

In April, the school held its fourth annual Gala in one of the most prestigious buildings in London, the National Gallery. Amidst stunning artworks, the staff, parents, and the Ecole Jeannine Manuel extended community enjoyed a live performance by four talented Year 10 students. The ensemble blended piano, cello, singing, and dancing, leaving a lasting impression on everyone present. The Le Bilingue team interviewed the performers to hear about the making of such a triumph and the memories they made on that special evening.

First, well done for your tremendous performances at the gala! How did you prepareforitandforhowlong?

Andreas L (piano player): It took us a couple of months of rehearsal three times a week, usually for about an hour. We rearranged the original song to fit into what we wanted to do and came up with good transitions and flow for the concert.

Leonor GB (dancer): It was a relatively short process of rehearsing compared to the work that we had to do. In the rehearsals we would work on our parts and run through the performance to make sure all the parts were working together.

Anna F (singer): First, we would meet to brainstorm our ideas and to start rehearsing the singing. The closer we were to the event, the more we rehearsed. The final month before the event, Mr. Cogavin would take us out of DEAR and sports to rehearse even more. As a whole, it was a great experience to see this project coming together!

Charlotte C (cello player): Quite a bit of the work was arranging the music in a way that would highlight the best parts of the song and bring out the talent in each performer.

What was the collaboration between such varied artistic media like? How much of an impact did it have on your performance?

Leonor: It was really interesting to bring different artistic media together into one performance. We never really disagreed during rehearsals and, as a group, I think we all really got along and I believe the performancereflectedthat.

Anna: The collaboration of all of our talents was very cool. Mr Cogavin knew exactly how to combine our skills together whilst making the best out of them. He never ran out of ideastohighlightourtalents!Wealsoliterally never argued - this was amazing as we progressedveryquickly.

Charlotte: Our collaboration was very easy, we got along very well and bonded over the work we were doing and the effort we each put in to really create something special together.

Andreas: Our collaboration was very good all the time, somehow. You would expect to have even just a few disagreements but we had close to none. It made the performance aloteasier.

What did you find to be the biggest challenge? And the greatest reward?

Charlotte: For me, the hardest thing was learning to adapt to playing without a set plan for all the music and when we were playing it. As a classical musician i was used to playing with set sheet music n front of me so coming up with arrangements on the sport with others, especially Andreas was a fun challenge.

Leonor: I think the biggest challenge was to bring everything together - music, singing, dancing and the video. The greatest reward was finishing a complete run through that wentreallywell.

Andreas: The biggest challenge for me was synchronisation of the individual parts, which worked incredibly well in the end. The greatest reward was definitely to be able to make something as good as this in such a shortspaceoftime.

Anna: For me, the biggest challenge was figuring out how to sing both songs. I had to figureoutthebreathing, knowwhentosing

loud or quieter to convey a certain atmosphere, and on top of that trying not to looktooconcentrated.Ihadneverreallydone such a performance before so it was all new to me, but this experience really improved my singing.Thegreatestrewardwasdefinitelythe final performance - it was so magical to be able to perform in such a place. Also, i this taught me how to be at ease in front of a big crowd (it was great help before the oral de soutenance which, compared to our performance, lookedveryeasy!)

How did you feel moments before, during and right after the performance? If you felt any, how did you overcome the stress?

Andreas: I was quite calm because I luckily didn’t have the most difficult part to play in the performance, compared to Leonor’s dancing, Anna’s singing and Charlotte’s cello. During,Iwasjustconcentratingongettingthe structure right and not missing beats or parts. Afterwards, it was a lot of gratitude and relief thatitwentwell.

Charlotte: I didn’t feel very nervous before the performance but during and after was when therealityofwhatiwasdoingsetinandigot more stressed. Especially when I was playing and there were technical problems. I wasn’t tooworriedaboutthepeoplelookingatmeas I was nestled nicely into a corner next to the pianowhereIfeltverysafeamongthepeople Ihadworkedwithforthepastmonths.

Leonor: Before the performance I was a bit stressed because the venue was amazing and performing there was really a once-in-alifetime opportunity. However, during the performance I was very concentrated on what I was doing but I felt relaxed too because I enjoy performing and being onstage. At the endIwasextremelyhappyandproudofusall as our performance went really well and becausetheaudiencelovedit.

Anna: I was so nervous an hour before the performance- what if my voice would creak? ButthenMr.Cogavintoldusthatwewere

going to perform a bit later than scheduled and Ms McCalla came in to give me vocal warmups, and this relieved my stress. I still felt a bit anxious butIfeltmoreexcitement.

As soon as I stepped on stage, I really was overwhelmedbyhappiness.Ifeltsogratefulto bethere, andcouldnotstopsmiling.Whenthe choir joined me, I looked at everyone in the room - they were all smiling too. To see that everyone was enjoying our performance made me feel so happy. When it was over, I felt very proudofallofus, becauseallofourhardwork really had paid off. And of course, relief because I could now really enjoy my evening withoutanyworries

What did you learn about yourself after this experience?

Leonor:IlearntthatIenjoychoreographingmy owndances.

Anna: That I am capable of singing well in front of big crowds, full of important people, and that they won’t see that I am super stressed.

Andreas: I learned that I really like to perform as a group and that I enjoy restructuring songs.

Charlotte:DuringthisexperienceIlearnedto

really rely on my ears and adapt to what was goingonaroundme.

If you had to describe the experience in three words, what would they be?

Andreas:Wow,Overwhelming,Fun

Leonor:Exciting,Eye-opening,impressive Anna: Magical, once-in-a-lifetime (not sure if that’sreallyonewordhaha),incredible!

Charlotte:Exciting,Unity,fun.

And finally, what advice would you give pupils who might perform in the future?

Anna:Enjoythewholeexperience.Notonlythe final performance, but also the rehearsals, because you’ll realise how incredible this opportunityis.Alsothatyoushouldn’tstresstoo much about the performance because people will be impressed no matter what - if you’re here,it’sforareason-you’rereallytalented. Leonor:Reallyenjoythewholeprocessandthe performance. Try to relax even if performing seems daunting because even if you make a mistakeitdoesn’treallymatterastheaudience is always amazed by what you can do despite anymistake.Mostimportantlythough, havefun as this experience is something you will probablyalwaysremember.

5E RESIDENTIAL TO HASTINGS

HISTORY, SEA AND SHEEP

On 28th May, all the 5e went on a residential to Hastings. We headed to Battle and explored the site where the battle of Hastings we learn about in History books took place. We took an amazing stroll around the ruins and explored some of the towers. After that, we made our way back to our accommodation site and got directed to our rooms set in barracks.

The next morning, we visited a Norman castle and went on a thrilling adventure along caves below ground. It taught us loads about the smugglers who used to creep around Hastings and how they worked. Then the teachers took us for a beautiful picnic on the beach, where some of us got seriously wet! And there must have been some sort of ocean theme because we visited an aquarium in the afternoon. Back to the accommodation and took part in activities such as football and capture the flag. After eating dinner, our supervisors let us watch the football match where Olympiakos won against Fiorentina.

On the last day, we played a game of mini golf at an amazing course on the seafront with three different levels. We then went to the beach for lunch and finally made our way to the train station. We arrived back in London at around 4:30, feeling tired but content.

Overall, it was an amazing trip with experiences that none of us will forget anytime soon!

Summer is now so close ! The sun is shining, the leaves are green and the school year is almost over! But what will be trendy to wear during the holiday? We put together a must-have list so you can shine high and bright this summer.

FASHION WHAT TO WEAR THIS SUMMER

THE MICRO

SHORTS

These really short shorts have appeared on the catwalks in Milan and pretty much everywhere else. The word ‘micro shorts’ was first used by Women's Wear Daily in 1970 to describe shorts made in luxury fabrics, such as velvet and satin, for fashionable wear rather than for sport . You can wear them on an informal day or on the beach with a casual black tank top.

THE WHITE DRESS

Large or tight, with intricate embroidery or plain, the white dress is a timeless piece and a sure trend for this summer! These dresses originate from royal weddings like Queens Victoria’s back in 1840. Before walking down the aisle, you can wear yours at the beach, for a casual night out or after being in a pool.

CHERRY RED

It's elegant, it’s bold and can be worn with simple things such as a pair of jeans. This dark shade of red is likely to be the most worn colour this summer.

HIGH-RISE TROUSERS

These trousers were made trendy by Jonathan Anderson by ushering in a new super-high-waisted trouser shape – so high, in fact, that the trousers came with an in-built corset to hold them in place under the bust. You can wear them with a white tucked in top or blouse. You can wear it when you go out with friends or go shopping, or even at a more elegant event.

ROSE MOTIF

Romance was in the air at Simone Rocha fashion show, where fresh, pale pink, longstemmed roses were trapped between layers of tulle that comprised the prettiest of party dresses. That rose theme curiously persisted across fashion’s four main cities for spring. Shaped with roses or motifs, these dresses are perfect for a summer party!

METALLIC

Metallic treatments never seem to leave fashion’s trend orbit – but they gained renewed traction for spring as host city Paris looks ahead to the 2024 summer Olympics. Zendaya even took it to the next level with carpet outfit at the Dune: Part Two premiere. From dresses to skirts or shirts, metallic is a colour to wear to a fancy night out.

POLO CLUB

If Mrs Prada says the polo shirt feels right again, who are we to disagree? These shirts are the shirts to wear. Either with flip flops to go swimming or with matching shorts, these polo clubs are perfect for summer!

ways to make the most of London in summer

People mistakenly associate summer holidays with visiting desert islands or sitting by the swimming pool of a luxury hotel and tend to overlook the benefits of London in summertime. According to Travel & Leisure, who referenced Delta Airlines data, the UK capital is the top summer destination for a holiday. So makes the city, which we often take for granted, a popular choice for an agreeable stay? The answer is probably longer than you expect but we came up with some tested and approved places to visit this summer.

Boating on Paddingtonthecanals

This is a really fun activity to do with family and friends. You rent boats to go around the canals in paddington where you go through tunnels and see pretty areas of London. You get one adult to drive the boat but don't worry, it’s super calm on the canal. It’s also a great place to have a picnic so get your snacks ready!

Relax in Ruislip Lido

Ruislip Lido is a great place to visit if you want sea, sand and (hopefully) sun. It’s a man-made beach with great things to do. You can get snacks at a café so don’t worry about getting hungry. Bonus: it is a dogfriendly place and you can go biking there. If you have younger siblings, they might enjoy the train rides there and if you are keen on nature, there are woodland walks!

EcritparRaniS,6e

Enjoy the sights at Sky Garden

At the top of the Walkie-Talkie building, there is a gem of place called Sky Garden. It isn't like going to the park but it is covered in plants and has an amazing view of London with super areas for Instagrammable photos. It has nice food and is very big so it’s a bit of an exploration going around. Its a great place to go with family to have fun and relax from the bustling city.

This is for the foodies (so pretty much all of us). Seven Dials Market is a super fun food hall which has pop ups and foods from all over the world. There are loads of different places with food that tastes amazing! Additionally, the roof has an interesting symmetrical structure that is worth discovering. So whether you like sweet or savoury, there's something for you..

Make dicoveries at the

Planetarium

This is London after all, and it can rain unexpectedly more often than not. If you want something to do on one of those days, check out the Planetarium. Once you have picked a show you want to watch, you can learn so much and it is an amazing and immersive experience. There are amazing pictures and documentaries to watch and it has become a popular attraction in the city.

6 composers you should listen to

World Music Day originated in France and was first celebrated in Paris in 1982 on the first day of summer, 21st June. It started to become popular all over the world. Now, World Music Day is celebrated on the same day in different countries. There are many types of genres of music to choose from on this fabulous day but we decided to celebrate the golden age of this art: classical music. WORLD MUSIC DAY

antonio vivaldi

Antonio Vivaldi was born 4th March, 1678 in Venice and died 28th July, 1741 in Vienna, Austria. He was an Italian composer and violinist who composed music in the style of Baroque. He became an excellent violinist and in 1703 he was appointed violin master at the Ospedale della Pietà, an orphanage. His most famous piece is The Four Seasons, which portrays the cyclical nature of the seasons.

JOSEPH HAYDN

Joseph Haydn was born 31st March, 1732 in Rohrau, Austria and died 31st May, 1809 in Vienna, Austria. He was an Austrian composer who helped establish the forms and styles for the string quartet and Symphony. Haydn sang in a church choir, learned to play various instruments and obtained a good basic knowledge of music. His most famous work is the Erdödy Quartets which is a classical movement.

Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky

Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky was born 25th April, 1840 in Votkinsk, Russia and died 25th October 1893 in St Petersburg, Russia. He is the most famous Russian composer of all time and his music had great openhearted melodies, impressive harmonies and colourful, picturesque orchestration. His most popular works were Swan Lake, 1812 Overture and the Nutcracker Waltz of the Flowers.

Clara Schumann

Clara Schumann was born 13th September, 1819 in Leipzig, Germany and died 20th May, 1896 in Frankfurt, Germany. She was a German pianist, composer and wife of composer Robert Schumann. Her most famous piece is named Four Fugitive Pieces, Opus.15, which was a group of four brief compositions for solo piano, published in 1845.

Scott Joplin

Scott Joplin was born 24th november, 1868 in Texas, US and died 1st April, 1917 in New York. He was an American composer and pianist known as the “king of ragtime” at the turn of the 20th century. Joplin spent his childhood in northeastern Texas, though the exact date of his birth is unknown. By 1880 his family moved to Texarkana, where he studied piano with local teachers. His most famous works are The Entertainer and The Easy Winners.

Frédéric Chopin

Frederic Chopin was born 1st March, 1810 in Żelazowa Wola, Poland and died 17th October, 1849 in Paris. He was a Polish French composer and pianist of the Romantic period, best known for his solo pieces for piano and his piano concerti. Although he wrote little but piano works, many of them brief, Chopin ranks as one of music’s greatest tone poets by reason of his superfine imagination and fastidious craftsmanship. His most famous works are Nocturn, op.9 and Etudes.

awesome family activities to try!

We all know that family (whether that be parents, siblings or very dear friends) is one of the most important things in your life but what are ways we can celebrate that ? International Day of Families is on 15th May and aims to promote the important role played by families in our lives while also reflecting on the challenges that modern families face. We support this cause and came up with five activities that you can do with your family to strengthen your bond.

GO ON A SCAVENGER HUNT

This is a great idea for families to enjoy woods and the great outdoors all year round, from scavenger hunts and den building to wildlife spotting and nature crafts. The woodland trust gives a chance to do a treasure hunt to help children to familiarise with nature and to have fun with their families. It is a great way to build trust and reliability between family members. Look online for the next hunts organised across the capital.

Have a picnic at Hyde Park

A picnic is a fun and relaxing way to build memories and enjoy the presence of others. A good thing about picnics is that unlike a restaurant where you can’t make a lot of noise and you need to be mindful of the other customers, picnics offer more freedom and spontaneity. Furthermore it is less expensive and you can eat as much as you want. Picnics are such a fun way to enjoy food, and kids particularly love the fun that goes with eating outdoors. Bring along a frisbee or a volleyball and engage in physical activities.

GO SEE A MUSICAL

We are lucky to live in London, a city bustling with culture and all sorts of shows. It would be criminal not to make the most of it. Matilda, Wicked, Mrs Doubtfire, the list goes on and offers enough variety to please everyone.

Plus, attending theatre performances can help enhance social bonds and play a useful role in helping children develop emotional intelligence. Not only will you and your family have a great time but you will also have plenty to chat about on the way back home.

BAKE COOKIES TOGETHER

Baking cookies with kids can get a little messy, but who doesn’t like a home filled with smiling faces and the smells of fresh-baked cookies? Nothing beats the feeling when you finally get to bite into the biscuit you spent a couple of hours working on.

It doesn’t matter whether it's oatmeal raisin or classic chocolate chips, just spending an entire day baking can be a memorable experience. Have fun with shapes and textures and experiment by mixing flavours. The one who does the most work gets to lick the spoon! Eager to try new recipes? You will find plenty to choose from on the Internet or social media.

Have a family game night marathon

Stay in for the evening, get cosy in your jammies and have a game night marathon. There are different games for all ages, but Bingo is a favourite for almost everyone. You can make it even more fun by adding prizes for the winner, like store gift cards, sweets or extra TV time for the children. Spice it up by giving dares to the losers. Need inspiration? Here is a list of games you can play at game night : Monopoly, Jenga, Uno, charades.

World Music Day is on 21st June and we wanted to celebrate music by having a chat with a musician. We certainly didn’t have to go too far to find one. Mr Cogavin, head of 4e and 3e and singer (you might have seen him sneak in and out of the building with his guitar case) has kindly agreed to sit in the interviewee chair.

Howdidyourjourneyasamusicianstart?

In Ireland, where I'm from, music is really an important part of culture. And it is quite common at the end of family reunions and gatherings with friends for somebody to take out a guitar or to sit down at the piano and start singing songs and for everyone to just join in. When I was very young, I had a couple of cousins, a bit older than me, who were very good guitarists and when I saw them playing at family gatherings, I always thought how I wanted to be able to learn one song and be able to sing a song for my family and for my friends. And then when I started learning and playing one song, I realised I could learn a lot of songs and that's how basically it started. Just playing for family and friends.

When was the first time you sang in public? What diditfeellike?

I sang at a school talent show – which is where my love of the Talent Show at Jeannine Manuel comes from – when I was sixteen. I sang two songs with some friends and it was an amazing experience. I remember just the idea of performing in front of a room full of people was a lot of fun and the audience sort of reacted. There was something really nice about that shared experience of it all.

I have had a few over the years. I have one in France that I'm unfortunately not able to play with as often Doyouhaveaband, ifso, whatisitcalled?

as I would like, but I meet up with them every year. They are called the Hobosapiens and I have been playing with some of these guys for about 15 years.

Whatkindofmusicdoyouplay?

A bit of everything. I really like folk, rock, blues and I love old classic 1960s pop music.

Whatisyourfavouritealbumofalltime?

The White Album by The Beatles.

Was Taratata [a French television music show] a funexperience?

You’ve done your research! It was amazing, we were very lucky that we were chosen to perform that week for Taratata. It was a show that I knew from living in France, I knew it was a very important show and they chose us as their sort of unkown band for the weekend. It was a very incredible, very memorable experience. We met a lot of very famous musicians that day and we met the presenter who is very famous, Nagui.

I have a lot. The Beatles are the best ever. I'm a big fan of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and I think they're the ones I always come back. Who is your favourite musician?

Does being a musician influence the way you teach?Andifso, how?

Definitely because it involves a lot of improvisation, it's an exchange, so you need to find ways to communicate and if the first way doesn't work, you have to try and find another way to do it. That's the same with playing live music.

WhydoyouthinkWorldMusicDayisimportant?

I never really knew about it until I lived in France. I thought it was just the most fantastic thing. Music has a way of uniting people and a way of bringing joy. I think it's a way of just sharing something and any opportunity for that as humans I think we need to just celebrate and cherish.

D-DAY IN THE WINGS OF A HISTORIC OPERATION

LEOPOLD C, 6E

D-DAY LANDINGS

On the 6th of June, 1944 the Germans were quite surprised to see an armada of landing crafts dropping thousands of soldiers on the grand beaches of Normandy. A few hours before, these landing crafts were in the middle of the channel, waiting for the signal to arrive. The attack was concentrated on five beaches: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword.

A STRATEGIC LOCATION

These beaches were not the closest ones to the English coast. At firs,t the Germans thought the British would land at Calais which was the closest beach to England. But the Germans, not knowing the exact landing places, decided to reinforce the whole coast. To lighten the German defences, Garbo, a German spy, invented a clever lie.

GARBO THE SPY

Garbo was originally a spy working for Hitler. He was sent to the UK but was arrested. The British convinced him to work for them. He passed along false information to the Wehrmacht (the German land army), such as telling them that the British were going to land in Calais. The Wehrmacht, because of this information, moved their Panzer Divisions to Calais to tighten the defence in that area.

SURPRISE!

The Germans were not suspecting that the Allies would land in this area. Indeed, they had spotted false inflatable tanks opposite Calais and were convinced that the Allied landing would be in Calais. But the German defences were not nonexistent, though on most beaches the landings had low casualties on Omaha, the Americans suffered many losses. The Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-surMer contains 9,388 burials.

OMAHA

As the landing barges crashed into the beach, taking heavy fire, the first wave of infantry started rushing up to the German ‘pillboxes’, small bunkers that looked like a box of pills. Heavy machine gun fire halted their advance; the Allies knew that Omaha beach would be the most defended but had relied on amphibious tanks to provide supportive firepower.

Sadly, of the 29 amphibious Sherman tanks only 2 made it to the shore. The main causes were the rough seas and being launched too far from the coast by ships scared of being hit. Near Omaha, on the high cliffs of Pointe-du-hoc, 2000 rangers, America’s elite land soldiers, landed with the mission to destroy the German guns which could fire on Omaha beach. The rangers only suffered ‘minimal’ casualties of 77.

The first assault wave had been pushed back on Omaha beach but eventually the beach was taken, without claiming 2400 casualties. In comparison the British lost 1400 men overall!

OOPS

On Utah beach the assault waves suffered a very low death toll and were a complete success, but the first assault wave landed on the wrong beach strip! A minor error which wasn’t repeated by the other waves.

THE PARACHUTE DROP

This year shall mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. On this date, there was a British parachute drop over Normandy in order to commemorate the landings. The Airbus A400 is the plane used for the paradrop but this year only one is available for hundreds of paratroopers!

D-DAY 3 PEOPLE WHO HELPED MAKEHISTORY

On 6th of June 1944, History was made in Normandy when the Allied troops took via air and sea the French coast from the hands of the Nazis, commencing the liberation of France. To this day, D-Day is the largest seaborne invasion in History. This year marks its 80th anniversary. Let’s take a look at three people whose part was influential in the success of the operation.

GENERALDWIGHTD.EISENHOWER

Eisenhower was appointed supreme allied commander and was the 34th president of the United States. He believed in “modern republicanism” which is a political idea centred on citizenship in a state organised as a modern republic. His famous speech (most often referred to as Eisenhower’s farewell address)was broadcasted January 17, 1961. The speech was given to encourage the allied soldiers fighting in NormandyonD-day.

AIRCHIEFMARSHALSIRARTHURWILLIAMTEDDER

Sir Arthur Tedder was a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps during the first world war. On D day, he was appointed the role of Deputy Commander of Allied Forces. He played a major role in the invasion of Italy, before being appointed Deputy Supreme Commander. Unfortunately, he was widowed twice before dying in 1967at77yearsold.

GENERALBERNARDMONTGOMERY

Although being perceived as arrogant and disliked by a majority of people, General Bernard was one of the most successful British commanders of the Second WorldWar.Hewassodetestedbypeoplebecauseofhis origins; being a British officer in America, his ways were viewed as too “British”. On D day, Montgomery arrived with extra support and helped switch the tide of the battle. He later continued to succeed when he advancedintoGermany.

BANKHOLIDAYS LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORY THAT MAKES MAY SO LOVEABLE

You might have noticed that throughout this month, we’ve had a lot of bank holidays. I don't hear anyone complaining but it begs the question : what is the reason for these extra days off?

MONDAY 6TH OF MAY

also known as May day or International Workers’ Day. It originated in 1889 to support workers that had petitioned for an 8-hour workday. Similarly, in America, 1st May became an official holiday called Labour Day and France also has its own bank holiday celebrating all workers. It also links to the celebration that started over two thousand years ago when the Celts would celebrate the first day of summer which is why it falls between the spring equinox and the summer

MAY 27TH

This one takes place on the last Monday of May, it replaces the bank holiday after Whit Sunday and pentecostal. They both are Christian holidays that take place on the 49th day after Easter Sunday, it pays tribute to when the Holy Spirit was poured onto believers.

Notice something? That’s right, most bank holidays happen on a Monday (the only exceptions being Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Good Friday and 1st January). This is because of a Royal Proclamation made by Queen Elizabeth II: the 1971 Act would give her the right to appoint additional days as bank holidays. So basically, if a bank holiday falls during a weekend, she gets to make the following Monday a bank holiday.

And if you like May in the UK, you will love May in France! They can boast of having 3 bank holidays throughout the month: 1st, 8th and 29th. Pretty dreamy, huh?

CHANNEL TUNNEL CELEBRATES

30TH ANNIVERSARY

rani s and emilie a, 6e

WHY WAS IT BUILT?

On the 6th May 1994, the Channel Tunnel, also called the Eurotunnel, and which connects the UK to France and will be celebrating its 30th anniversary of it being built. To celebrate the day, this article will go into detail about everything you need to know about its history.

The Channel tunnel was built to create a cheaper and quicker alternative way of getting to travel between England and France (and therefore the continent). The tunnel is used by the Eurostar trains everyday, getting passengers from the countries. According to Statista, about 20 millions board the Eurostar every year. The connection was originally designed as a bridge but, due to geological difficulties, it was changed into a tunnel as any bridge or other structure in the channel would almost certainly be rammed by a ship.

HOW DID THEY BUILD THE TUNNEL?

Engineers had to do a lot of planning, designing and building. Both countries dug their side of the tunnel until they met in the middle. They used large cylindrical machines called Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) to dig the tunnel. France had 5 TBMs and England 6. The tunnel was lined with concrete to keep it from collapsing under huge amounts of water and pressure. The work started at the coast of both Folkestone in England and Calais in France, with the tunnel meeting in the middle on 1st December 1990, making History on live television.

HOW CAN PEOPLE TRAVEL BY CHANNEL TUNNEL?

Passengers can travel either by ordinary rail coach or within their own motor vehicles, which are loaded onto special railcars. Trains, especially the Eurostar, can travel through the tunnel at speeds as high as 160km (100 miles) per hour. Two different types of trains go through this tunnel, the Eurostar and the LeShuttle trains. The Eurostar is like any other train that you take. However, the LeShuttle trains can transport cars and other vehicles on it. The train itself is half a mile long.

the story behind the olympics posters artwork

CHARLOTTE G., 3E

As the Paris Olympics are fast approaching, we thought we would look back on some of the most influential Olympic editions in the art world. We quickly found the Munich 1972 Games used the modern art movement to advertise the global games across the world by the use of posters.

The first official poster made for an Olympic was for London’s Summer Olympic of 1908 and since, every Olympic Game has had an official poster for their events. However, in 1972 for the Munich Olympics, about 62 posters were created. An overwhelming number which can be explained were used to present a new image of Germany as a democratic and modern country after the infamous edition in Berlin 1936 under the Nazi regime. These games were not only significant for Germany as a way to remake themselves but also significant as they were the first Olympic games to be broadcasted on live television in colour around the globe. Consequently, making a collection of posters allowed populations around the world to get excited about the upcoming games as they would be able to watch it from the comfort of their own homes without having to travel.

Twenty-nine artists were invited from all over the globe on this project and each interpreted it in their own artistic way. These artists used a range of different media, however many worked with lithographs as it was the easiest way to create copies of their artworks.

As mentioned before, the artists invited to commission these posters had the liberty to choose whichever theme they wanted but diversity is a theme which seemed to be recurring. For example, the poster from Jacob Lawrence, who was a successful American artist during the 20th century and whose works illustrate vivid stylized realism of scenes of Black life and history, was one of the artists who was invited on this project for the Olympics. With this task, he chose to call attention to the achievements of Black athletes, a clear nod to Jesse Owens, an African-American Olympic winner who was not acknowledged by Hitler and Roosevelt. Additionally, this commision also has a significance within the context of the history of the Olympic Games and the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. Firstly, the Olympic games were a way for the black community t

to show their strength on an international stage. For example in the 1968 Olympics, American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos won the gold and bronze medals. When climbing onto the podium, the two men raised their fists and bowed their heads, which is seen on an international level as a symbol of strength and protest. Therefore, in commemoration of their triumph, Lawrence wanted to illustrate a poster with the same powerful meaning. Thus, Lawrence took up this project like many other successful artists but incorporated his own stylistic element such as the representation of only black athletes to protest with the Civil Right Movements.

In addition, handicrafters used the artistic liberty given to them to show their talent and style. For example, Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser used his own style and colour palette by still creating a piece which can be linked to the Olympics due to small details such as the soccer balls and the Olympic rings in the bottom left corner. His poster is known for being the only graphic Olympic poster in the series with hand typography; this adds a personal element to the poster.

On the other hand, many artists took inspiration from the new movement which had been introduced in the late 60s and early 70s: contemporary art. For example, Max Bill and Victor VassarelyplayedontheuseofgeometricshapeswhileincorporatingOlympiccolourstoproduce their posters. This is a style of art, which was being explored all over the globe by artists like Picassowhousedgeometricshapestoillustrateportraitsandlandscapes. However,HansHartung and Peter Philipps used large brushstrokes to animate their posters, which is another example of howcontemporaryartcanbecreated.

To conclude, the Munich Olympics of 1972 were significant not only for Germany but also for the art industry due to the collection of the 62 posters created by successful artists of the 20th century.

WEGOTYOU:

Spring is an exciting time of the year for all the tennis aficionados out there, starting with Wimbledon which kicks things off for what always promises to be a thrilling tournament season. This year, the English competition will run from 1st to 14th July for its 137th edition. If you're watching for the first time (or are a regular viewer who wishes to learn more about it), here is everything you need to know about the tournament.

READY...

The first Wimbledon tournament was in 1877 with only men playing. Women and doubles games were introduced seven years later. Wimbledon has always been played at the All England Tennis Lawn and Croquet Club.

Last year, Spanish player Carlos Alcaraz won Men’s Singles and Markéta Vondroušová, from Czech Republic, won Women’s. Wimbledon legends with the most trophies include Roger Federer and Martina Navratilova.

SET...

The courts are special and unique as the players play on grass instead of clay. It is trickier to play on grass as the ball bounces lower and faster. The players have to bend their knees lower to be able to hit the ball. Big matches are played on the centre court: the largest of 18 courts at the club. It has a capacity of almost 15 000 seats for spectators.

MATCH!

The championship is divided into different categories. There are the Men's singles and Women's singles. The tournament has Men’s doubles and women’s doubles. There are also singles and doubles for girls and boys. What is also great is that there are singles and doubles for players with wheelchairs.

GOLDEN SET

The tournament isn't known only for the grass courts, it includes other specifics which make it unique.

Wimbledon is known to have a strict and smart dress code. Players are expected to wear white as soon as they step foot on the grass.

After the big matches, the balls played with are auctioned for people to bid on.

The specialty snack for any of the audience at Wimbledon is strawberries and cream.

TOP REASONS TO EXPERIENCE A FOOTBALL GAME LIVE IN THE STADIUM

At Le Bilingue Londres, we love football (check out our previous editions for a report on the main European leagues) and the EURO competition running this month has us excited. But watching a game at home and watching a game in a stadium are two totally different things. So if you’ve been reluctant to give the live experience a try or if you’ve been considering but never acted on it, this article might be just the push you need.

You should watch a game at a stadium because of the atmosphere. The chants, the pyro, the choreography. When the stands start going electric and jumping around, you can’t help but join in to make your experience even more unforgettable. You can see your favourite players from so close without camera cuts interrupting an action or goal celebration like it happens often when you’re watching on TV. The experience becomes far more authentic which makes for an unforgettable experience. And if you’re lucky, a player might wave or give you their jersey at the end of the game, something that would never happen through a TV screen.

Being in the stadium brings out the football fan in you. Even if you might be shy or swear you won’t be yelling like the most intense supporters, you inevitably end up sitting on the edge of your seat, jumping up when your team scores and rejoice with everyone else. It is an ecstatic feeling that the most comfortable couch and curviest TV screen will never beat. Additionally, being there can help support your team, who in return could make an outstanding performance. Many players have stated that feeling the supporters’ energy makes them more eager to win the match.

WHAT IS WORLD ENVIRONMENTDAY?

EMMA T, 4E

On 5 June, 1973, the world first celebrated World Environment Day. The date was chosen by the United Nations to honour the 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment, a landmark summit in conservation and environmental awareness. The theme for World EnvironmentDay2024is“landrestoration,desertificationanddroughtresilience.”

WHAT IS THE AIM FOR WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY?

The primary objective of World Environment Day is to raise awareness about environmental issues. It aims to encourage communities to take action towards protecting the environment and helps advocate to promote environmental policies at local, nationalandinternationallevels.

HOW SHOULD WE CELEBRATE WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY?

World Environment Day is a day to learn about the environment and learn about ways to help the environment in the future. To celebrate in school, you can commune with nature,createenvironment-basedlessonsandworkonearth-centredactivities.

HOW CAN WE CREATE AWARENESS ABOUT WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY?

To create awareness about World Environment Day, you can educate others about this event. We can do this by simply engaging in conversation about the environment with others or by sharing knowledge and information through social media, in the form of informativetextsorevenhowyouarecelebratingit.

WHY SHOULD YOU TAKE PART IN WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY?

Everyone should take part in World Environment Day because time is running out. To keep global warming below 1.5°C this century, we must reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Without action, gas emissions will continue to increase and exposure to air pollution beyond safe guidelines will increase by 50 per cent within the decade andplasticwasteflowingintooceansandseaswilltripleby2040.

WE GAVE UP WHEELS AND FOUND OUR FEET

Walk to School week (20th-24th May) is an annual event organised by Living Streets to encourage children and their parents to embrace the benefits of walking. Many schools take part in the event, giving out badges to those who exercise at school. Any form of activity is strongly encouraged during this week, whether it be walking, running, cycling or riding a scooter. We tried it and recorded our experience. For context, we strictly travel by public transport or car and had to give up our routine and make changes to adjust to this new setting.

MONDAY:

The alarm went off 20 minutes earlier than it usually does. Grumpy face, bleaker sky. Being an early bird isn’t as cute as it sounds. We met up and arrived at school exhausted and out of breath. It felt like we had volunteered for a long journey to Mars. Did we really want to do this for the whole week? Was it really worth it? We had lost all motivation. Then we thought of all the people who do it every day of the year, regardless of the changeable London weather, and how we could compromise for 4 more days. Definitely a long way to go before we could compare ourselves to Sisyphus. Tomorrow would be easier.

TUESDAY:

We decided to combine business with pleasure (if one can call walking for a newspaper article business and preparing for a classwork pleasure): on the way to school, we revised for an oral and took turns reciting our texts. We found we were really productive and got a lot of things done. We thought it was kind of easier than the day before but still a little long.

WEDNESDAY:

That day was a bit emotional. We had a discussion about birds triggered by the sight of a few of them lying dead on their backs. We arrived at school a little late and did not get the chance to grab something to eat. No big deal, it isn’t like public transport is famous for being religiously on time either. We were halfway through the week and felt a rush of confidence for the rest of the week. We found that once we’d get to school we would really feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction.

THURSDAY:

It felt so much easier to walk to school. We had a lot more motivation and we did not feel tired at all. As we got halfway there we decided to take an iced tea because it was scorching hot. Without realising at first, we were paying attention to architectural details or other nice features of the city we had not seen before. Walking outdoors at a relatively quiet time of the day allowed to notice the little things that make London such an enjoyable city.

In conclusion, this experience has been great for us. We really got the feeling of accomplishment when we got to school and it felt great. Furthermore, as we were walking to school we realised everything was so calm on Oxford Street. We often picture London as a loud, busy city but we saw it as calm, quiet and enjoyable. We got a different, better view of the capital. Also this is a great way to exercise instead of sitting in the car or the Tube everyday. If you are considering it but you are a bit reluctant, find a friend to do it with and you can use that time to catch up. It also felt satisfying to know that we had reduced our carbon footprint and helped the environment on our level. Although we will be going back to our usual means of transportation, we agreed we would meet up again for a morning walk from time to time. So before you decide it is not for you, how about you give it a try, too?

GETTING TO KNOW A MEMBER OF THE JEANNINE MANUEL SCHOOL COMMUNTY

MME MATHARAN-BRIZARD

Commençons par le plus évident. Pourquoi avez-vouschoisilavoidel’enseignement?

A quoi ressemble votre journéetype?

Pourquoi?

singapore swiftie scandal

Chaos reigns across South-East Asia after a deal between the Singaporean Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong, and the American superstar leaves fans and the other political leadersdisgruntled.

Beloved singer Taylor Swift has become the object of a tug of war between the Prime Minister of Singapore and other South Asian governments. Lee Hsien Loong has craftily signed an exclusivity deal with Swift, limiting her shows in South Asia to Singapore alone. Thesingerwasoffered$3millionpershowin order to secure this deal. “Why did Prime Minister Loong do this?” you may ask. Lee Hsien Loong’s decision has been thoroughly critiqued by many South Asian neighbours, who are upset that they have been deprived of the tourist boom that the multi-GrammyAwardwinner’sconcertsbring.

“It isn't what good neighbours do” stated a lawmaker, whose own country’s fans had been bitterly disappointed when Swift announced thatshewouldskipmostoftheirregion.People have blamed the Prime Minister Loong and some have held onto hope that they would still have a chance to go. WHY WHAT HAPPENED TO KATE MIDDLETON SHOULD BEALESSONTOALLOFUS

Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, is many things. She is a member of the British royal family, is Prince William of Wales’ wife, is the heir to the British throne, but she is also a cancer patient as she has recently revealed. Although this news was a shock to all British citizens, and even to people across the world, her decision to publicly announce that she was suffering from this illness was not her initial intention, and was heavily influenced by the ongoing speculation and pressure from worldwide media she faced online. This rekindled the issues in regard to misinformation spread on the internet and the consequences it can have on people’s lives. The question stands: is it time to implement limitations to the content we post and view on social media orwouldthisviolatefreedomofspeech?

It all started in January, when Buckingham Palace announced that the Princess of Wales would be stepping back from her royal duties until Easter due to her recently undergone abdominal surgery. The world held its breath for updates on the Princess’ health and in the midst of public concern, a wave of misinformation flooded social media, spreading rumours about the nature of her illness, the decline of her health, and whether it was truly an illness or simply a cover-upforsomethingdifferent.

Amidst the digital chaos, Kate found herself thrustintoanunwantedspotlight.

The pressures of the incessant speculation and invasive scrutiny pushed her into making thedifficult decisiontoshareher battlewith cancer. In a heartfelt statement, she addressed the persistent misinformation and stressed the importance of seeking reliable information on the internet. She also asked for “time, space and privacy” for herself and herfamilyforthedurationofhertreatment.

Her courageous decision to share her personal health struggle has not only shed light on the pervasive issue of online misinformation but also inspired many to advocate for a more responsible and informed digital community. Kate emphasised the importance of respect in internet communities, reminding everyone that behind the headlines and social media postsarerealpeoplewithreallives.

As Kate Middleton continues her journey towards recovery, her experience serves as a powerful call to action. It is a reminder that while freedom of speech is a cherished right, it must be balanced with the responsibility of sharing accurate and respectfulinformation.ThePrincessofWales hashighlightedacriticalconversationabout the ethical use of social media, one that will hopefully lead to positive changes in how information is disseminated and consumed in our increasingly interconnected world. The recent development is a reminder to be mindful of the content one posts or shares onlinewithoutreliablesources.

TOP TIPS TO MAKE A GREAT DETECTIVE

To celebrate Sherlock Holmes Day on 22nd of May (the author’s, Arhur Conan Doyle, birthday) everD year, we decided to run our own investigation and determine what are the top three qualities that our favourite detectives showcase.

EXHIBIT ONE

When trying to solve a crime, don’t rule anyone or anything out. Often, when a crime happens, even the rookie detective rules their family and friends out of the suspect list, without reason other than “they would never”. Same with any other situation, as soon as it goes against what we consider normal, we cross it out. However, to quote Sherlock Holmes: “When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.

EXHIBIT TWO

Always have a notebook and some pens on you. When solving a crime, or just generally, in everyday life, noting down things that seem odd or unusual, or just something you noticed, is really good. It trains your eye to be alert of things, and it can help you solve crimes by using anecdotes on things that you’ve noticed before that have changed since the crime. Plus, hardly anybody observes the world carefully anymore, so you would have an advantage over other detectives. As Sherlock Holmes says: “The world is full of obvious things which nobody by any chance ever observes.”

EXHIBIT THREE

No detective can work alone, no matter how good they are. A partner in solving crimes is always helpful, especially when the crime is close to home as they have a clear perspective over the issue because their family isn’t involved. Also, when crimes become scary, or too much, you can count on them. Even Sherlock knows this: “ You have a great gift for silence, Watson. It makes you quite invaluable as a companion.”

You now have the keys to being the best detective possible, perhaps even better than Mr Holmes himself. Remember those skills are at everyone's reach so long as you work to develop them. So, detect away.

I have not met one person who doesn’t like Little Women. This book tells the story of the four March sisters, all radically different from one another. LE BILINGUE

VOL DE NAINS DE JARDIN À SCOTTISH VILLAGE !

La fête avait pourtant bien commencé…

–Unmoisplustard–

Tous !

In the two days since it was first displayed, a mural by graffiti artist Banksy has been vandalised. The artwork creatively refoliated a badly trimmed tree in the Islington North neighbourhood. It was painted on the exterior of an abandoned building in a heavily populated neighbourhood in north London. Fences had been erected since the mural was created, but by Wednesday, it had been vandalised with white paint. A couple days after the mural surged Banksy came out on social media saying he made it.

FLOODED STREETS IN DUBAI

On April 16th, the normally dry climate of Dubai was hit with a year's worth of rain in less than a day! This flood led to cars engulfed by the mass of water which led to hundreds of drivers to abandon their vehicles on roads. Some people had to walk barefoot home, some even unable as their home was too far. This storm also meant that schools had to close and flights were grounded. Basically it was utter chaos in Dubai!

On Friday 15th March in New South Wales Australia, a blueberry which measured 39.31mm in diameter and weighed 20.4g. Previously, the record was a blueberry which weighed 16.2g. However, this blueberry did not appear in thin air; it has actually been part of a planned theory which has been developing for more than 25 years in Costa’s VIP scheme. Nonetheless, some could think it's a glitch in mother nature.

SUMMER RECIPES TO WHIP UP! 3

ETON MESS

This simple but refreshing dessert is perfect to top off a casual summer lunch. It is almost childishly simple to make and is always a hit. First mentioned in print in 1893, it is commonly believed to originate from Eton College and is served at the annual cricket match against the pupils of Harrow School

Ingredients:

300ml cold whipping cream

500g Fresh Strawberries

120g Sugar

2 tablespoons caster sugar

8 to 10 large meringues

THE RECIPE

Cut up your strawberries into quarters and hull them

Sugar them

Make your whipped cream: using a mixer, start with cold whipping cream, adding in the caster sugar while you whip. When your whipped cream is firm and smooth, you know when to stop mixing. If you mix it too much it almost turns into butter…

Next, take your meringues and break them up into medium chunks

Toss all your ingredients together

The Eton mess is ready!

WATERMELON SALAD

HOMEMADE PESTO

This recipe is perfect for a summer pasta salad, and is surprisingly easy to make. Use a food processor for best results, but an old fashioned pestle and mortar is fine if you don’t have one.

250g fresh basil leaves

3 cloves garlic

peeled 3 tablespoons pine nuts

40g freshly grated Parmesan

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

40g olive oil

THE RECIPE

To make the pesto, combine basil, garlic, pine nuts and Parmesan in the bowl of a food processor; season with salt and pepper, to taste. With the motor running, add olive oil in a slow stream until emulsified; set aside.

Pestle and mortar: combine basil, garlic, pine nuts and Parmesan in the bowl, season with salt and pepper, to taste. Grind all the ingredients together and then add olive oil.

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week.

This recipe is very common in Eastern Mediterranean countries, such as Greece and Türkiye. Though it doesn’t necessarily sound appealing, it is in fact delicious, combining sweet and savoury ingredients in the most satisfying manner.

Ingredients:

One fresh watermelon

A handful of mint

200g of feta cheese - or any similar cheeses (Labneh or ricotta)

THE RECIPE

Cut your watermelon in half

Cut the half into substantial chunks

Crumble the feta

Assemble the salad and toss all the ingredients in extra virgin olive oil

Chop up some mint and sprinkle it on top of the salad

WHY YOU SHOULD TRY SPORCLE

Sporcle is a website on which you can do any type of quiz you want (and probably any sort of quiz your mind can think of since the content is so broad): it covers topics that range from sports, geography, music and movies to history, language, history and science.

There are many interesting features you can use such as the quiz lab, which is where you can play quizzes from all categories, which haven't been published yet. Then you’ve got all the cool features like badges, which can challenge you to collect some and if you collect Florins, the website’s currency, you can showcase your badge.

Also, if you like a good, harmless competition, you can befriend other users and challenge them to a specific quiz. It’s a great opportunity to gauge the level you’re at.

Next, there are quests. Every week or month, you get a riddle that you have to solve, such as answering a quiz or completing small tasks.

You can also showdown with random people, which will improve your showdown rating if you win.

Finally, you’ve got what they call Live 5, which is the online game equivalent to Who wants to be a millionaire, and Trivia Bingo, which features questions instead of numbers.

So if you want to revise in a fun way or want to have a competition with your friends, or just test your general knowledge use Sporcle. It won’t disappoint.
