Letter from the Editors Dear readers, chers lecteurs, Welcome back to school for a new academic year. As you can see, we are back too, and with a team twice as big as last year. What a tremendous success - we couldn’t be prouder and we are excited to start this new journey with our new generation of aspiring writers. The other exciting thing to look forward to is the Autumn season! Ah, Autumn—with its vibrant colours and mild temperatures, is the perfect time to snuggle up in a cozy sweater and enjoy a hot beverage while dreaming of the delights that await us on Halloween. Ah, Halloween—the time of year when pumpkins turn into devilish lanterns, costumes get stranger than ever, and sugar flows freely! In the meantime, get ready to make this back-to-school season memorable and fully embrace the autumnal pleasures that lie ahead. Whatever your plans, we're thrilled to share them with you in the beloved pages of our newspaper.
With all our autumnal excitement, L'équipe éditoriale de Le Bilingue

EXAM WEEK
NATIONAL POETRY DAY

Ah, the first day of school - we’re nervous and our stomach is in knots. But is is no picnic for the members of staff either. There is the planning and organising (and we’re sure they secretly get jitters about meeting us too). Here is a sneak peek into our amazing teachers’ first day! They answered some much needed questions about the behind the scenes…

OUR TOP TIP OUR TOP TIP: WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU FORGET TO STUDY? REVISE JUST BEFORE YOU GO TO SLEEP! EVEN THOUGH YOU MIGHT THINK THAT IT'S BETTER TO REVISE AT THE LAST MINUTE, JUST BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS, IT IS A LOT BETTER TO PREPARE FOR THE FIGHT FOR YOUR SURVIVAL JUST BEFORE SLEEPING BECAUSE YOU'RE MORE LIKELY TO REMEMBER IT. LASTLY, ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT NOBODY REVISES THE SAME WAY.

WHAT TO WEAR THIS AUTUMN THE BOB The most trendy hat is the bob or also known as the bucket hat! The bob hat has a good advantage of being unisex and can be worn at all ages young or old. It can also be worn as a summer hat or be worn as a mid season accessory. The bob is a small round flexible soft hat to squeeze in a bag. The hat is double-sided with many variations of shape ,colour and sizes and the brim can be folded to make a sailor hat. It provides protection from the sun as well as from the rain and it keeps good visibility. To find out more about the history of the hat visit any site on google.

THE YELLOW RAINCOAT The oilskins or “slickers” yellow raincoat that fishermen usually wear is coming back to a trendy mode. The origins of the yellow raincoat go back to the history of britton fisherman. This garment is worn by fishermen because it is warm and it is good at spotting a man on a boat quickly and easily. This coat was worn in the movie Jurassic park and many more.
AIR FORCES Air Forces are one of the best shoes nowadays. They were launched in 1982 and their style later made them a staple in hip pop culture. It was the first ever basketball shoe to feature Nike air technologie. Air Forces are available in all colours. The reason why nike air forces 1 shoes, especially certain editions or collaborations, cost more is because the material on the shoe is rather expensive. These sneakers go from sportswear to streetwear.
THE JOTT CARDIGAN The French brand from Marseille, Jott, is famously known for its basic down jackets, sleeveless down jacket, raincoats and extreme cold jackets. The system is a puffed up jacket with air pockets. You may have noticed that many people wear it at school and outside.

Anyways, nothing happened after but it was still a very spooky experience. “

Hallooween ,
I AM SO KEEN,
TO EAT ALL THOSE SWEETS, AND FOR THE ONLY TIME OF THE YEAR, MY PARENTS WON’T FEED ME BEETS. THE DOOR RINGS; I OPEN IT, “GIVE ME SOME SWEETS” A DEVIL SINGS, NOT SOME LITTLE BISCUITS, SPIDERS, ZOMBIES AND WEREWOLVES COOKING IN THE OVEN. I WANT THE WOLF THE DEVIL SAYS, CHANGING HIS DECISION MY DAD SPOUTS. I GO OUT – “GOOD NIGHT,” HE HOWLS, “DON’T LET THE WEREWOLVES BITE.” I SEE MY FRIENDS GOING FROM HOME TO HOME, “TRICK OR TREAT” WE ALL SHRIEK, AND PEOPLE GIVE US SWEETS. MOST OF THE TIME, WE GET WHAT WE WANT, BUT FROM TIME TO TIME, THEY’LL SAY “I CAN’T”. IF SO, BEWARE OUR REVENGE: WE TAKE OUT ROTTEN EGGS, HURL THEM ONE BY ONE, UNTIL THE OWNER BEGS.

Charles Baudelaire- L’Albatros
Arthur Rimbaud - Le dormeur Du Val

LONDON FASHION WEEK: DRESSING TO KILL...THE ENVIRONMENT? By Emma T., 4e
ondon Fashion Week has happened semiannually, every February and September, since 1984. Organised by the British Fashion Council (BFC), London Fashion Week puts fashion in the public eye, celebrating both big brands and smaller labels. This year, the event showcased an incredible 135 brands, 107 physical showcases and 35 digital ones. Brands include Burberry, JW Anderson, KNWLS and Molly Goddard, sponsors include Diet Coke, Chambord and Toni&Guy, and celebrities who attended include Kate Winslet, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Stormzy and Kate Moss. Many celebrities attend London Fashion Week, but as do royals. This year, Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice attended the Vogue World: London 2023 Party at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on September 14th. Joined by Beatrice’s husband Edoardo Mapelli, the daughters of Prince Andrew stayed with Anna Wintour, organiser of this event, and Kate Winslet, worldrenowned Titanic actress.
FASH ION
To celebrate the show, Bond Street Station was renamed “Burberry Street Station” after the designer brand. The iconic Tube sign’s name and colours were changed for a week, going from a normal TFL tube station logo to a baffling non-Tube dark blue, which led to confusion among tourists and outrage among Londoners.
16
Through the years, London Fashion Week has accumulated many protests, ranging from protesters holding caskets with “RIP LFW (London Fashion Week)” to people walking on the runway and pretending to be models in order to raise awareness about topics such as animal rights and mental health. This year’s protests included a “naked protest” organised by the second-hand website Gumtree, where a group of people stripped down to rebel against designer names, criticising the culture of fast fashion and rapid trend cycles. “The public love affair with fast cyclical fashion is waning as awareness of the environmental crisis grows” says the CEO of Gumtree, Hugh Hurley to the Post in a statement. Despite the mainstream adopting recycling and reselling strategies of pre-worn pieces, trendy clothes continue to clog landfills in the Global South, leading to the pollution of the soil and environment. According to Bloomberg, last year, the US trashed more than 11 million tons of textiles and the fashion industry contributed to 10% of carbon emissions worldwide. Though Fashion Week has been subject to many controversial conversations, it remains a longstanding tradition that is celebrated by the general public and will continue to be admired for years to come.

TOUT CE QU'IL FAUT SAVOIR SUR LA COUPE DU MONDE DE RUGBY by Arthur A, 6e

WEST END SHOWS TO SEE THIS SEASON Written by Alexandra B., 5e
London is known for its breathtaking West End musicals. People are often left with clear memories of the astonishing vocals, fun songs, beautiful costumes, and impressive choreography. There are currently many great musicals on the West End theatre scene that I encourage you to watch, however these six seemed to stand out. Here are the top six musicals to watch in London in autumn 2023:
SIX: THE MUSICAL
1
3
22
Six is an upbeat, energetic, and female empowering musical. It is a modern twist on the tale of Henry the VIII’s six wives, who quickly go from mistreated queens to glamorous pop icons. The catchy songs, and comedic flair will catch your attention. I guarantee you will be sitting at the edge of your seat waiting for the next act.
LES MISÉRABLES Les Miserables is a classic. It originated as a novel and had many adaptations, yet one of the most successful was the musical. It is quite a tragic story about poverty in France in the XIX century. The characters must face and overcome hardships. After Jean Valjean serves nineteen years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread, he craves redemption. To say the production is great would be an understatement.
HAMILTON
2
4
Hamilton has won many awards for its impressive production. It is a story of revolution, ambition, and hard work. It focuses on the life of the “founding father without a father”, Alexander Hamilton. It shows the ups and downs of his life and the fall of his career. It stands out because of its unique style of hip-hop like music. Hamilton will have you laughing, crying, and vibing to the music.
WICKED Wicked is absolutely iconic. You have probably seen a poster of it in the streers or at least heard of it. Wicked is inspired by the Wizard of Oz and focuses on the two witches of the Land and their friendship. You will be blown away by the insane vocal capacity, special effects, and coordination.
5
THE LION KING We’ve all watched Disney’s animated film and probably even the musical, but it really is worth watching. It is beautiful aesthetically: over 700 lighting instruments were used to create the set we all know and love. It is fun, but also a bit sad, and this creates the perfect balance to tug at our hreatstrings.
6
FROZEN Frozen was an important part of many people’s childhood. This version goes into depth and adds new songs to learn more about the characters. The visuals are very impressive, and the choreography is never anything less than perfect. This musical is just really exciting and quite nostalgic. Moreover, with its dreamy winter settings, it is the perfect day out to gear up for the Christmas season.
Did you know? The school regularly organises trips to the theatre. Who knows, you might even go see one of the shows on the list!

THREE BOARD GAMES Written by Antoine T., 6e
AFTER US, Catch Up Games (2023) Synopsis: It is a game that happens when the world is overrun by apes. It is inspired by the book Planet of the apes by Pierre Boulle. What I like about the game: I like that the game mechanism and the play of the game throughout deck building, possible strategies and game context as well as the number of choices and paths that can lead to interesting cases and game changing decisions.
Details: Its layout is easy to organise and the box contains cards, wooden tokens, cardboard small cards , a board and a manual . This can be a comfortable option if you like player vs player (PVP) games . After us is a game that is playable up to 6 (with a solo mode available ) 14+ (but it is accessible for children 7 or 8 years old) 45 min (it can be longer or shorter depending on the speed of play and how much players are involved
MEMOIR 44, Days of Wonder (2004) Synopsis: The thrilling but enthusiastic battles of D-DAY have yet to show how this operation still marks the world throughout films, books, video games, board games as well as many more. Memoir 44 is a game by Richard Borg that shows the pin point perfection of a war game. The game has multiple scenarios going from Pegasus Bridge to the liberation of Paris. It involves the British commandos as well as the airborne troops and the elite nazis forces. Details: Memoir 44 is a PVP (player versus player) game. [x]+( but I started playing it when I was 9) [x]min(can be longer or shorter depending on the set up and the strategies of the players) 24
What I like and dislike: To all its good sides Memoir 44 has a dark side which involves the game preparation. But apart from that, the scenarios are balanced (normally as there might still be a benefit because the game is trying to be realistic so the power and number of forces might differ), the game play is very enjoyable and its second world war aspect can be nice. Note that it takes time to lay out the board before you can start playing: laying out troops, placing terrain tiles and reading the special rules (due to specific terrain, there are tiles and a multitude of different troops for each scenario).
YOU SHOULD TRY COMMANDS & COLORS ANCIENTS, GMT Games (2006) Synopsis: The historic battles of Hannibal and the roman empire still represent many styles of entertainment.Command and Colours is a board game by Richard Borg (that you might have already heard of, he has been the creator of Memoir 44, Battle Cry, BattleLore) It involves a relatively complicated game mechanic and has a similar scenario to the Memoir 44 game play. It begins with the battle of Akragas and continues throughout Cannae and Dertosa as well as many more to finish with Zama
Details: Command & Colors is a PVP game (player vs player) It does not have an age approximation but I would rate it as a 14+ because of the complicated game rules. It also doesn’t have a minute rating but it may be long or short depending on the players, battles and strategies .
What I like and dislike: You can play different battles that occurred in Ancient Rome and that there are many tactical aspects and play styles that can be used in the game. The game can still improve on the materials and it is easy to learn (albeit difficult to master).
Hopefully, these will convince you that board games have become more than these dusty boxes up in the attic “granddad used to play”. The genre has evolved with our time and offers a variety of engaging and intricate storylines that will appeal both to teenagers and adults. So, put that video game console aside and try to play the old-fashioned. We promise you, it’s actually fun.

le globe-trotter...
Tokyo is one of the biggest cities in the world. It’s an incredible place, which I had the opportunity to visit this summer. I narrowed it down to 5 places that I enjoyed the most to show you.
TOKYO TOWER Tokyo Tower has a fantastic view of the capital. You can see the iconic Mount Fuji. Did you know? Tokyo Tower is 332 metres tall, which makes it 2 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower. I wouldn't take the car to
get
there
because
the
entrance is tricky to find.
SENSOJI TEMPLE It is a Buddhist (a religion that comes

Asakusa which is on the East end of
Tokyo.

TOKYO ZOO Zoos are great but zoos with pandas are a must-see. The two baby pandas and the two grown up pandas are very cute and very popular: we queued for more than one hour and we could only see them for three minutes. But it was definitely worth it.
UENO PARK if you want to learn more about herbology then Ueno Park is the perfect place. As a bonus, if you go in autumn you will be able to see cherry flowers. Ueno Park is a place with a variety of different
flowers,
little
ponds
and
small
charming bridges. It's a real maze worth getting lost into.
MEIJI SHRINE It is a beautiful shrine that is meant for Shinto-ists, a Japanese religion. You can buy
traditional
poems
and
Japanese pray
the
shintoist way.

Going all pink :
A “Barbie” movie review by Lauren S, 5e
Unless you live under a rock, you can’t have missed the Barbie phenomenon, based on Mattel’s iconic dolls. Here’s the plot (spoiler alert!): there is the real world and a Barbie world. Unlike the real world where men are superior to women, Barbie Land is the opposite. Barbie Land has been perfectly flawless but one day, something goes wrong… Barbie wakes up with a cold shower, when she attempts to fly down to her car as usual, she falls brutally, and last but not least, her perfectly arched feet fall flat! This is not normal for a Barbie. She realises that all this happening must mean something. She has no choice but to travel to the real world in order to find the girl that's been ruining her perfect life, and who needs to be reminded of the iconic dolls who she used to love. She finds the girl, and a lot of adventures happen…but when they return back to Barbie Land, everything is different! The Kens rule and the Barbies are treated like objects (cough like the real world cough) What is also interesting about the film is that it emphasises sexism, not only against women, but also the gender expectations that affect men. The Kens start this revolution because they have felt unseen and undervalued by the Barbies since the creation of their world. Besides the feminist tone, Barbie is also a fun and unserious comedy, such as Ken’s obsession with his “Mojo Dojo Casa House” or when he pours out his feelings into a song called “I’m just Ken” I would give this movie an 8/10 because it was a very interesting way of denouncingsexism but it could have been improved by making it more realistic. Either way, it was a great movie and I recommend it. It is the movie of the summer, it grossed over 1 billion Dollars and we’re not done hearing about it. So have a pink day and check it out. 28

BOOK by Lily B., 6e
The Skylarks’ War by Hilary McKay This spellbinding novel is the first in a fantastic duology. Carrie and her brother live with their single father in a large house in Plymouth. Since their mother died, their father hasn’t left his shell and spends most of his time at work, hardly caring about his children. He blames Carrie for her mother’s death, and sends Peter off to boarding school. Carrie spends most of her time in her gloomy house and at the local attic school. Their only escape? Their “Skylark Summers” with their older cousin, Rupert. No matter the disasters that happen, these holidays are always the highlight of their year. However, the menace of the First World War hangs in the air, and it is not long before their world is turned upside down.
The Skylarks’ war was the Boston Globe Best Book of 2018
I loved this book because it is a really beautiful story, packed with the perfect balance of sadness, joy and comedy, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes books about family and war, and who is 10-13. In conclusion, this marvellous tale of family, war and how far you’d go to protect the people you care about.
