Letter from the Editors

Dear readers, chers lecteurs,

As we congratulate the students for their resilience during exam week, we also wish to celebrate all the various activities and events l'école Jeannine Manuel hosted during that time.

And now, on to the things to look forward to: as London will be busy with the upcoming coronation festivities, the month of May also sheds light on important dates such as Walk to School and Mental Health Awareness weeks, but also International Museum Day on which we chose to dedicate a section of the newspaper

And who knows? Perhaps we will inspire some of you, dear readers, to walk to one of the London museums and spend an entire afternoon there to unwind!

O R I E N T E E R I N G

During this exam week, the 6e had different activities like orienteering, recycling competition, frisbee tournament

The orienteering was fun and interesting At the end of the event we got prizes like candy and chocolate It was very enjoyable and we got to go to Golders Hill park in North London The main activity we did was finding places on a map. It was organised by Danny, parents and teachers who volunteered. We got there by Tube which was already pre-paid for the whole grade. The groups that we were put in were unaccompanied so we could run around and find the clues on our own At the end of the event, all the 6èmes could go to the playground inside the park and play like little kids We all enjoyed having some time to run around and relax, which was great because of all the pressure of exam week

Did you like orienteering?

I Liked that you get to run around in the sun and that it’s so fun that you actually want to do it.

Roxane

Did it make an impact on the stress of exam week?

What are your thoughts about orienteering, and how could we make it better?

I liked orienteering because you don't have to be watched by supervisors and we could make it better by making the places harder to find.

Sienna

Would you have liked to be put in a group you chose?

Yes, because it made me less nervous about getting the results for the exams

Yes, so I don’t get too bored during the activity Gustav

Timothee

The winners were Sofia, Roxane, Maya, Loussine, Thomas and Sonia Their team found all the places on the map and came back first. They got the biggest box of chocolates but in the end every group got a prize for their participation

We are sure to say that everyone had a good time over there (even if it was a bit muddy)

A GUIDE TO WELLNESS

Mental health is the backbone of our health: a strong mind for a strong body And yet is unfortunately often overlooked. Just as you might exercise, it is important you practise mindfulness.

Here are 10 things you can do to clear the brain fog:

Keep up physical activity: this maintains a positive mindset: endorphins they call them!

Watch your diet: avoid processed food (sweets, biscuits, crips, prefer fruits and healthy snacks). What you eat affects how we feel in the short term but also in the long term!

Sleep: it is one of the most important tips! Children must get around 9 hours of sleep every day.

Stop stress building up over time: some simple exercises can make the difference: breathing in through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. Pausing and thinking: will this matter in 5 years?

Connect with others: spending time with friends and family will affect your mood positively.

Set a goal: it can help to motivate yourself.

Help other people: this will make you feel useful and good about yourself.

Drink a lot of water: it will improve your mood and energy levels. Pay attention to things around you: mindfulness can improve your mental health.

Talk: If you feel unwell you can always have a chat with your parents. Or someone you trust.

The Benefits of walking

As it is a Walk to School week I wanted to try and explain why I walk to school everyday Firstly it has some amazing benefits which I will share at the end, and secondly it just wakes you up and helps you become more aware of everything around you So if you could just try to walk at least 10, 20 or even 30 minutes everyday it would help your physical and mental health a lot.

Here are some benefits to try and persuade you into walking:

1.

First of all it strengthens your bones and muscles, and builds your stamina in walking and other exercises.

2.

Walking helps prevent various conditions by keeping you fit and heart healthy

3.

You could probably discover a new place that you haven’t really seen before, because when you ’ re in a vehicle you can’t really take in your surroundings.

Now that the former Queen Elizabeth II Windsor has sadly passed after forty-five years of reign, Charles, her firstborn son, will become King, third of his name, on Saturday 6th of May. It will be the first time a coronation is taking place on a weekend since 1902 The coronation will be in Westminster Abbey During the event, the King will take "the coronation oath"* and then receive "the orb and sceptres"* After that, a crown will be placed on his head by the Archbishop of Canterbury, who is the leader of all churches in England. But not any crown, the St Edward's crown!

The Saint Edward’s crown is only used for the coronations of monarchs and is worth around 57 million Pounds. It was last used for Queen Elizabeth.

King Charles will as well receive a medal, like any other monarch, on the same day

Following the coronation, in mid 2024, the design of money will change with Charles III' portrait being featured on £5, £10, £20 and £50 banknotes.

Before then, a performance of the “Coronation Choir” will be played for entertainment and to honour to the new King. The Royal family had also asked big pop music stars to perform such as Adele, Harry Styles, Robbie Williams and Elton John, but they all declined due to "scheduling conflicts"

Since singers have refused to be a part of the coronation, there will be a moment of “lighting up the nation” with projections, illuminations, lasers and drones on display. Heads of states from all around the world will be there to celebrate with the soon to be King! For everyone who wasn't invited (so probably most of the globe) the coronation will still be broadcasted live on TV for the world to see.

*The coronation oath is a promise to govern the United Kingdom of Great Britain, Northern Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand

*The orbs and sceptres are unique objects that represent the powers and the responsibilities of a monarch

WHAT HOSHI IS

Our app is called Hoshi (which means star in japanese) We chose this name as it relates to our slogan: “Save the planet so we can see the stars!”

The app is aimed to promote and implement good habits in people’s everyday lives whether it is within a family, a group of friends or just alone.

As well as this, it also creates new communities that are driven towards one same goal : healthy and eco friendly lifestyles Users receive daily/weekly challenges that they have to complete, once they have done this, they earn points that can later be spent on real prizes like a coffee.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

We first were introduced to the competition (ISA STEAM) during compo week We initially came up with ideas for fun, however as our idea started to thrive we wanted to enter the competition as we believed our app had a real shot at winning We were really committed to this app as the theme of ecology had resonated in our lives since 6e ( we were all part of the eco committee)

THE PURPOSE

We wanted to create a sustained impact on the world by leveraging the negative addictions that some may have today on social media and gamifying it into something positive that can save our planet.

WHO IT IS FOR

Family accounts: Here the parental figure has the control on the other devices

Shared accounts for friends: to be able to share an account on multiple devices Individual accounts

Our target audience is for a younger demographic (people who use social media often). We have designed 3 different types of accounts available in the app: 1 2 3

THE NEXT STEPS

We haven't actually made it yet, and we only entered the concept designs and ideas into the competition, but we are taking it step by step to actually build the app, and we are currently searching for app building tools to make it!

PROPOS RECUEILLIS par Leah S et Matilde B , 5ème Chloe G, Mina C and Chloe B are the 3ème pupils who won the ISA Steam Competition with their phone application idea. They told us more about it:

This column is about introducing and highlighting the various skills and special hobbies we have at EJM In each issue, find out about the special talent of a pupil and a member of staff

I am a former semi professional basketball player now part time Coach with over 25 years experience in the Basketball organization, strategic planning, management and responsibilities of Basketball coaching

I have been involved in sports from a very early age and I was part of the Nigerian Youth Team in the 80's and 90's being with the under-18 Nigeria National Team I also played and participated in other sports growing up as a kid, like Football, Volley Ball, Table Tennis, Badminton, Tennis, Judo, Handball and Golf.

My Lifestyle of Basketball.

Basketball is not a sport for everyone. It takes a lot of discipline, dedication, strength, focus, and teamwork The love that I have for the game is indescribable, and if by chance I could never play again, my soul would be a hollow lifeless shadow

M Y S P E C I A L T A L E N T

Before animation, I was a graphic artist making drawings I thought looked cool and learned most of my skills on youtube. But I always had this rash of storytelling stuck in my head which I couldn’t stop scratching An urge to add movement to art like Van Gogh’s painting ‘Starry night’ As I was casually skimming through art Youtube channels I found myself watching people the age of 25 making animation to illustrate stories. I tried to make a video like theirs and got hooked on the art of animation.

I got hooked because of the process and the result it presented It was calm and relaxing but at the same time exciting as you worked on frame after frame The result that I got after a session was excitement as my characters and scenery were getting brought to life The taste of victory as I knew I got the movement right was amazing as the challenges of making a fluid motion were hard One key challenge is to try to keep the movement natural by thinking of the principles of animation/life

To make animation you don’t need much, you could make it with paper as well as on digital I find it easier to work on digital so here are some of my favourite programs for animation: FlipaClip (on Ipad); Procreate (on Ipad); Opentoonz (Windows/MacOs); TvPaint (Windows/MacOs)

B O O K

This is a book that I recently read and that really captured me. It was recommended by the school and it was very enjoyable I absolutely adored it The story is about twins who are stuck together by their hips and below, and who, growing up, had trouble doing everyday things Their parents had problems paying for the special clothes and therapist sessions amongst many other things…

Meet the twins: Grace and Tippi When they move to a new school, they don't know anybody but when they finally make friends they dare to have fun! They start spending more time with two best friends, a boy and a girl called Jon and Dragon. When they dare to do crazy things Tippi and Grace both come out of their shell and start getting more comfortable around the school. One day they decide to tell their doctor they want to get separated from each other and so the family organises a day for them to get surgery. When the terrifying day comes, the two girls get ready and tell each other: “ see you on the other side ” It is one of the twins' last word. After the surgery, the family receives bad news: Tippi lost a lot of blood and did not make it And now all Grace wants is to have her sister back, by her side…

UPCOMING ELECTIONS

Sunday 14 May 2023 will be the general elections in Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is the 12th and current president of Turkey he came into power almost two decades ago Many people question his democratic leadership Under his leadership, civil rights (such as freedom of speech, abortion) have diminished significantly Turkey used to be a secular country but Erdoğan has encouraged the Islamisation of the population The Turkish government has blocked many websites to ensure that Erdoğan will be reelected At the beginning of his term the economy was thriving but poor decisions doomed the economy to hyperinflation The final blow was the recent earthquake which killed 17,00 people and showed the corruption of local authorities

Next Sunday Erdoğan will be facing a coalition of different parties He can manipulate the votes to be reelected the outcome will be crucial for Turkey s path towards either democracy or an authoritarian rule
