Letter from the Editors

Dear readers, chers lecteurs,

We made it! The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the sweet aroma of freedom fills the air. It's that time of the year again when we bid farewell to textbooks and assignments and say hello to beach trips, ice cream cones, and endless adventures.

Le Bilingue Londres, too, has grown - we are celebrating the third issue and we look forward to coming back stronger after a well-deserved break But we wanted to thank you, dear readers, chers lecteurs, for being part of the team in a way, for contributing when we needed you, for reading us and looking forward to the next issue. And who knows, maybe next September, we might welcome some of you as editors The door is always open!

And now, let's sail away But remember this: summer break is not just about forgetting everything you learned in history class or putting your calculator in hibernation. It's about expanding your horizons, discovering new passions, and maybe even stumbling upon your hidden talents So go ahead, take that painting class you ' ve always wanted to try, learn to play the ukulele, or start a blog about your summer escapades. Let your curiosity guide you, and who knows what incredible things you might uncover?

Bonnes vacances chers lecteurs, dear readers, et Ă  bientĂŽt.

Sincerely,

Le Bureau des Annonces

A MIDSUMMER'S NIGHT DREAM: the globe is still the real deal

On 1st of June, all the 6e went to go see the play A Midsummers Night Dream at the famous Globe

The story talks about four lovers: Lysander, Demitrius, Helena and Hermia as well as a mischievous Puck that mixes up all the lovers with a love potion so there is a lot of mistakes and drama between these four friends. Hermia and Lysander run away to get secretly married and Helena and Demitrius follow. Lysander is in love with Hermia but is mistakenly given a love potion and falls in love with Helena. The play shows that love is love and many other meaningful things. The play was great! It was very funny and nearly all the cast was women which is impressive (and cool). However, Oberon should have had a costume because he did not in the production. But putting this aside, the costumes were magnificent and fantastic, they were so creative and really showed the personality of each character Overall it was an enjoyable and relaxing event, and thank you to our english teachers who organised this

"I loved the costumes and the acting because the costumes were big and colourful and the acting was very emotional and good."

N A T I O N A L T H E A T R E T R I P : A L O O K B E H I N D T H E C U R T A I N

On Tuesday 23rd May, the 5Ăšmes went to have a backstage tour of the National Theatre

It taught us many things about the theatrical world

Inside, there are three different theatres: The Olivier, The Lyttelton and The Dorfman theatres. The Olivier theatre is the biggest theatre of the three, it is a proscenium arch theatre with a fan shaped auditorium, as it has 1100 seats at an angle of 114 degrees The designers chose this angle because it is the angle of the human's perspective of view, so anyone on the stage wouldn’t have to turn their heads towards the audience as they can see the entire scene from their seat

The guides showed us a variety of different props that the actors and crew use For example if a character is drinking alcohol in the play, the prop master would get a can of beer, empty it, then cut off the top and put a smaller soda can inside so that way the actor won’t be drinking alcohol on stage. They also have these fake pies which you can take a piece out of which is held in by magnets

They showed us many other things like all the areas which they build props for the stage in, as well as many other things.

It was a fun experience and I recommend you go see a play there if you haven’t already been The backstage tour is also worth a look and it is an exciting way of discovering the venue And, you could also educate your parents about the different facts inside (which is always an incentive)

Amazing trip! It was very cool to see how they form the fake wigs The guide was funny and taught us many things Eleonore

"CONVERSATIONS FROM CALAIS": A DISCUSSION WE SHOULD ALL HAVE

On Friday 2nd June, Mathilda della Torre came to the school to share her experience as a volunteer in the sadly notorious refugee camp in Calais where many of the migrants who hope to access England are settled. There are around 3700 people in these camps; some stay two months, others two years

Mathilda Della Torre initially went there to understand what was happening but, after realising that something had to be done for these people being treated poorly, she decided to raise awareness and published a book titled Conversations from Calais which garners personal recounts and thoughts from anonymous migrants.

Before the book was made, she started this campaign by pasting quotations across London. When asked why they were so plain, she explained she wanted not only to leave room for the imagination of the reader but also so that when these people came to England they could start afresh and not have the label of immigrant, refugee, migrant or asylum seeker attached to them forever.

It was both insightful and humbling to hear about the migrant crisis from someone who has seen it firsthand It was an opportunity to discuss an important issue that is often difficult to fathom from newspaper articles.

It was a very powerful experience It was humbling to stand in front of so many children who were genuinely interested, curious and aware about the topic.

21st June is not the first day of summer, and as if it wasn't cool enough, it is also World Music Day. That sounds like a lot for just one day but it can take it as 21st June is also the solstice, aka the longest day in the year And now, you begin to fathom why it is the best day to celebrate music!

Do you consider yourself something of a music connoisseur? Then you might handle the quiz below all right If not, then it's okay: we never judge However, we strongly recommend you spend more time on Spotify.

Does your bestie prefer cats or dogs?

What is your best friend’s favourite season?

What is the latest secret your bestie has told you? If you know it, be loyal and don't tell anyone!

What are your best friend’s obsessions/phases?

How did you and your bestie first meet?

What is your best friend most afraid of?

What is your best friend’s middle name?

If you got 3 answers (or less) right, you might be distant friends. ïżœïżœ

Err, this is awkward. It seems you might suffer from an acute case of vitamin BFF deficiency Here’s our prescription: text each other three times a day, have one sleepover a week and go out as often as you can and have fun. You will know all about each other in no time

If you got 4 to 7 answers right, you might be close friends. ïżœïżœ

It appears to be that your friendship is going well but still needs a little work, but there are tips For example, if the teacher calls for teamwork, you guys should pair up straight away, and if you guys ever get separated you would be obliged to make a plead and beg for your bestie to come back

Best Friends Day 14

This column aims to introduce and highlight the various skills and special hobbies we have at EJM. In each issue, find out about the special talent of a pupil and a member of staff.

I wrote, produced and directed my first play when I was 15 and it was called, ‘The Glass Hero’ My play was performed for four nights and on the first night, a theatre critic from a local newspaper came to review it I learned a great deal about being a playwright when her review was published the following morning When I look back over ‘The Glass Hero’ today, I am filled with feelings of pity and pride: it was flimsy and full of flaws, but it spoke with my voice and this, I have come to realise, is key

Determined to improve, I quickly wrote three more plays and, haltingly, I began the long, torturous journey towards learning how to set scenes, structure dialogue, and bring characters to life

I think that a successful screenwriter must somehow possess the agility of a tightrope walker, carefully balancing plotlines, character arcs, and dialogue with the precision of a seasoned acrobat It is a juggling act of crafting compelling narratives while keeping the audience on the edge of their seats Late nights are spent hunched over a keyboard, concocting scenes that will - hopefully - leave the audience breathless or clutching their sides with laughter

So, embrace the pleasure and excitement of screenwriting, but remember, it is not all glitz and glamour I have learned that it takes dedication, persistence, and an unwavering belief in the power of storytelling The road may have its bumps, but the destination is worth every twist and turn So grab your pen, buckle up, and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime! Lights, camera, action!

M Y S P E C I A L T A L E N T

I started cello when i was three years old after my mom took me to the Suzuki hub in hackney in east London. My first teacher was an accomplished professional orchestral cellist who lived near me and had recently started teaching after retiring from her orchestral position. While learning with her I had 2 lessons a week and one concert per term. I very much enjoyed the group classes as they allowed me to play and connect with my friends and have fun.

After a few years, I started studying under a more laid back and lively teacher, and have been enjoying her teaching for the past 4 or 5 years. I also recently started studying with one of my mother’s friends, alternating weekly private lessons with both teachers. I very much enjoy his method of teaching and his bright spirit always puts me in a good mood.

I really look forward to the group lessons that happen almost every week. They inspire me to arrange music from movies and video games for my friends and I to perform together.

When I was young I was not very pleased about being forced to practise every day or having to go to another concert Now after the experiences it has given me, such as playing in the National Children's Orchestra and a weekly chamber music group on Sundays called Con Spirito, and the skills it has taught me, I am very thankful that my mother forced me to play the cello If anyone reading wishes to start an instrument I would highly recommend it The music community is amazing, the effort put in always comes out great and making music, by yourself or together, is just an experience that I believe everybody should have an opportunity to enjoy

MAYDAY:NEWYORKISSINKING

our siblings and their mother had boarded a plane to flee from their native country to join their father but the plane crashed due to losing engine power and went down in the middle of the Amazonian rainforest The pilot died on impact, the mother survived four days before telling her children to leave her to improve their chances of being rescued The four children survived on cassava flour then, when it ran out they ate seeds The oldest sister knew what to eat and how to survive as they came from an indigenous tribe and they would sometimes play a survival game with her family These children survived forty days in the rainforest alone aged 13, 9, 4 and 1.

New York is sinking Under the wait of its 6000 skyscrapers, New York is slowly being engulfed by the sea, sinking from around 1 to 2 millimeters per year although some parts of the city such as Brooklyn are sinking up to 4 millimeters per year As glaciers are melting, sea levels rise As a consequence, Lower Manhattan will be underwater in less than 80 years. Floods in New York have been more and more common In 2012, Hurricane Sandy left Long Island and part of New York City flooded Hurricane Ida killed 13 people and left parts of the city and subway stations flooded
