Ecobat is the world’s biggest battery recycler that meets essential energy storage needs by making the business of batteries safer and more sustainable for a circular energy economy.
Ecobat specializes in processes that harness precious resources more efficiently. We invent new solutions to improve products’ reusability, and we do it all with an emphasis on the good of our employees and the environment. We are working toward a circular energy economy where any battery, anywhere, can go back to work to minimize environmental impact. We believe that only by recycling these finite resources can we meet the infinite potential of electrification – for technology, for transportation and for tomorrow.
TRANSFORMING THE FUTURE OF ENERGY STORAGE
We leverage our deep history, extensive resources and broad infrastructure, enabling us to adapt swiftly to the rapidly changing requirements of the battery storage and recycling industries.
We manage the collection of end-of-life batteries as part of our commitment to making the business of batteries safer and more sustainable for a circular energy economy.
We use our capability and technology to recycle materials without compromising performance, while continuing to reduce overall impact.
We manage the procurement, sale and distribution of renewable power generation solutions that are collected and recycled by Ecobat in the circular energy economy.
Ecobat Solutions leverages its extensive technical, operational and commercial infrastructure to provide integrated solutions that meet the rapidly changing requirements of the advanced battery industry, original equipment manufacturers and aftermarket service providers.
With facilities in the UK, Germany and France, we are the leading provider of collection, dismantling, diagnostics, re-engineering and first-stage recycling capabilities to derive “black mass” and other recoverable resources from advanced batteries.
We work in technical, operational and commercial partnerships with our customers to deliver safe, efficient, effective solutions to specific application requirements.
We support research and partner with universities, trade organisations and government entities to make the business of batteries safer and more sustainable, minimising environmental impact and supporting the drive to circular energy economy.
As part of our ongoing quest to maximise battery usage and efficiency while protecting the environment and ensuring precious and rare natural commodities are not wasted, Ecobat Solutions has established an Advanced Diagnostics and Engineering Centre in the UK. This is the first of a developing international network of Ecobat Solutions facilities with the capability to test, diagnose, re-engineer and repurpose electric vehicle batteries and modules. Located in Darlaston, West Midlands, our state-of-the-art facility is one of the most advanced of its kind. All work is fully accredited for both quality and environmental attributes.
In a world undergoing radical change in energy consumption, Ecobat Solutions is developing advanced technologies and processes for recycling, re-engineering and resource recovery for lithium-ion and other advanced battery chemistries.
In addition to collection, discharge and diagnostics, and dismantling, we offer repurposing options for healthy batteries and cells, plus efficient processing of end-of-life units.
With a global reputation as an industry leader, striving for both process and environmental excellence, Ecobat Solutions aims to form an enduring partnership with our customers to provide full-life battery solutions with a focus on service, quality and compliance.
Ecobat Solutions maintains a central laboratory in Dallas, Texas, that supports our operations worldwide. Using our extensive experience and capabilities, we can provide support across diverse areas including technical, environmental, hygiene, operational process and product issues across the industry.
Investment in state-of-the-art high- and low-voltage equipment enables EV battery, module, and cell testing and diagnostics to be conducted to the most exacting industry standards, including LV123 as used by Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW. Additional OEM-specific test requirements can also be accommodated, and a sophisticated grading system has been developed to evaluate performance and future application suitability for EV batteries and modules.
We invest significant resources to ensure the ongoing safe operation of our facilities, to protect our employees, our customers and the environment. Ongoing investment in the development and integration of cutting-edge environmental technology and the utilization of quality management systems are just part of the Ecobat Solutions commitment to a safe and sustainable future.
We are a founding member of the Advanced Lead Acid Battery Consortium (ALABC), now known as the Consortium for Battery Innovation (CBI). We are an active member of the European Battery Recycling Association (EBRA). We partner with the U.S. Department of Energy and several highly regarded institutions and universities internationally.
is to form an enduring partnership with our customers to provide full-life battery solutions with attention to service, quality and compliance.
Collection of lithium batteries in a safe and compliant way is a key initial step in the recycling process. Using the regional infrastructure of Ecobat Logistics’ collection services, we can arrange the safe and compliant collection of batteries, including large electric vehicle lithium-ion and other advanced chemistries. Even critical, damaged and defective batteries can be transported for safe evaluation and discharge using our specialist UN & Competent Authority–approved critical transport containers.
Batteries arriving on-site are stored in quarantined evaluation areas and undergo a full visual and thermal stability evaluation. Once batteries are submitted, whether to be repurposed or recycled, they are assigned a unique ID. All stages of the process are recorded against the battery’s ID to ensure traceability. A dedicated safe containment area for high-voltage batteries enables rigorous testing and load simulation prior to further processing. Staff are trained both operationally and from a health and safety perspective to the highest level.
Battery modules are examined for faults or damage, and can be discharged to safe levels for storage or further transportation. These low-voltage modules can be rebuilt, performance certified and re-engineered for automotive or alternative second-life applications. Power captured from battery discharging is redeployed on-site at Ecobat Solutions, including being redirected to dedicated EV charging bays to minimize environmental impact.
Electric vehicle batteries have different construction and disassembly requirements, which are often complex and require special tooling. In some cases, detailed information is required from the manufacturer. A safe pre-evaluation and disassembly process is established and documented for every type of battery that enters the Ecobat Solutions system. Battery packs are dismantled and made safe for recycling or for further use. This process also recovers important components like the BMS (Battery Management System), connectors, cables and raw materials, including steel, aluminum and copper. From here, many of these components can be immediately returned to the manufacturing process.
Ecobat Solutions is setting the standard for safe and efficient lithium battery recycling at end-of-life. We are continuously refining and developing our first-stage recycling, material separation and recovery processes capability for the treatment of end-of-life EV batteries, modules, subassemblies and cells. The output of this stage is black mass, which contains cobalt, lithium, nickel and other valuable materials. Operations span multiple sites, including Darlaston, UK, and Hettstedt, Germany. US and additional European facilities are in process.
STAGE 4: REFINING
When recycling is complete, Ecobat Solutions contracts with trusted partners to further process the black mass that is generated. Through urban mining valuable materials, like nickel, cobalt and manganese, are extracted from the black mass and reused to build new lithium batteries. Ecobat and our partners can facilitate downstream processing from basic salts through to precursor and cathode active material.
Ecobat Solutions leverages our international group network and global technical experience to bring innovative products and solutions to market. Headquartered in Dallas, Texas, we are proud of our global reach and expanding capabilities.
