ABOUT Kane Cunningham
Kane Cunningham is a Northern Expressionist landscape painter renowned for his ability to capture the essence of landscapes. He believes that while photographs can replicate the appearance of a landscape, expressionist painting better conveys its deeper nature by reflecting the artist’s emotional connection, a concept aligned with John Ruskin’s idea of the “emotional truth of mountains.” Inspired by Expressionist Die Brücke painters like Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Cunningham’s work goes beyond simple depiction, exploring the complex relationship between the artist and the land.
Cunningham draws much of his inspiration from the landscapes of Northern England, especially the areas surrounding the Pennines. This rugged mountain range stretches from the gentle hills of the Peak District through the dramatic scenery of the Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines, reaching as far north as Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. It is a region characterised by glacial valleys, rolling hills, and ancient rock formations, sculpted over millennia by natural forces. These landscapes, rich in history and cultural traditions, have inspired artists, writers, and poets for centuries, including figures like William Wordsworth and John Ruskin, who sought to capture the region’s spirit in their work.
Born in Manchester in 1961 to an Irish immigrant father, Cunningham’s upbringing was rooted in the working-class culture of the North. His family lived in Salford, a place memorialised in the song Dirty Old Town His artistic journey began with a visit to Bury Art Gallery at the age of eight, where he was captivated by the paintings of J.M.W. Turner and others. This early exposure led him to study at Rochdale School of Art and later pursue Fine Art at Leeds Polytechnic. During his time in Leeds, Cunningham frequently travelled to the Yorkshire coast, sketching in Scarborough’s pubs and listening to tales of the sea.
In his early career, Cunningham balanced part-time teaching at Rochdale School of Art with his own practice, working from a studio in a Victorian cotton mill. His artistic influences included American colour field painters
like Barnett Newman, British artists such as John Piper, and the landscape painter Alfred Heaton Cooper. Over time, and particularly through visits to the Lake District, Cunningham developed a focus on landscape painting, drawn to the region’s vibrant colors and the immersive experience of its scenery.
In 1996, he moved to Scarborough, teaching at the Art School until 2017 before dedicating himself to painting full-time. His 2009 House Project, where he purchased a house on a cliff for £3,000 and transformed it into an artwork, gained international media attention before the house’s demolition in 2013. The project underscored his commitment to exploring the interplay between human structures and the natural world.
Cunningham’s work is held in the collections of several prominent North Yorkshire estates, including Castle Howard, Hovingham Hall, Sledmere House, and Scampston Hall. His ability to capture the spirit of the landscape has made his pieces a valued part of these historic collections, where his art resonates with the region’s cultural heritage.
In 2019, he held a solo exhibition at at Scarborough Art Gallery, showcasing his watercolours painted en plein air. That same year, he became co-director of the Big Ideas by the Sea festival, an event in Scarborough that addresses environmental and cultural themes. Currently, Cunningham is working on paintings inspired by climate change and the evolving landscapes along England’s coast, from Robin Hood’s Bay to St Bees, with a book of this new work set for publication in 2025.
He is also immersed in a 10-year project titled “13 Valleys of the Lakes,” which explores the Lake District’s valleys through their cultural, social, and poetic histories. This project includes large watercolour paintings and documentary photography, reflecting Cunningham’s deep engagement with the landscape. Through these efforts, he continues to celebrate and reinterpret the natural beauty and cultural richness of Northern England, firmly positioning himself within its artistic tradition.

3, Estimates, Estimates are designed to help you gauge what sort of sum might be involved for the purchase of a particular lot, Estimates may change and should not be thought of as the sale price, The lower estimate may represent the reserve price (the minimum price for which a lot may be sold) and will not be below the reserve price, Estimates do not include the buyer’s premium or VAT (where chargeable), Estimates are prepared some time before the auction and may be altered by a saleroom notice or announcement by the auctioneer before the auction of the lot, They are not definitive.

5, VAT, Items in our catalogue may be marked in the following ways:
a, (*) indicates that VAT is payable by the buyer on the hammer price as well as being an element in the buyer’s premium, VAT will be chargeable at the standard rate (presently 20%), This imposition of VAT is likely to be because the seller is registered for VAT within the European Union and is not operating the Dealers Margin Scheme
or because VAT is due at 20% on importation into the UK.
b, (**) indicates that the lot has been imported from outside the European Union, [These lots are liable to a reduced rate of VAT (5%) on the hammer price and buyer’s premium)],
c, Lots which do not have either of the above symbols have no VAT payable on the hammer price, This is because such lots are sold using the Auctioneers’ Margin Scheme, The VAT included within the premium is not recoverable as input tax.
6, Inspection of goods by the buyer, As we act on behalf of the seller, we are dependent on information provided by the seller about their goods, We may inspect lots and will act reasonably in taking a general view about them, However, we are normally unable to carry out detailed examinations of lots to check their condition in the way a buyer would do, You will have ample opportunity to inspect the goods, You must inspect and investigate lots that you might wish to bid for,
Please note carefully the exclusion of liability for the condition of lots set out in the Terms of Sale at clause 12.4.
7, Export of goods, If you intend to export goods you must find out:
a, whether an export licence is needed; and
b, if there is a prohibition on importing goods of that character e.g, because the goods contain prohibited materials such as ivory,
8, Bidding, Bidders will be required to register with us before the auction starts, We reserve the right to impose a deadline prior to the auction by which you must register or by which we must receive a commission bid, If you wish to bid on high value lots this deadline may be several days before the auction in order to allow us sufficient time to carry out the necessary checks, Lots will be invoiced to the name and address on the registration form, You will need to provide us with proof of your identity in a form acceptable to us and such other information as we may require, Please enquire in advance about our arrangements for telephone or online bidding, Please note that we may refuse to register you if you do not provide us with all the information and documentation that we ask for or at our discretion.
9, Commission bidding, You may leave commission bids with us indicating the maximum amount to be bid against a lot (excluding
the buyers’ premium and/or any applicable VAT), We will execute commission bids as cheaply as possible having regard to the reserve (if any) and competing bids, If two buyers submit identical commission bids, we may prefer the first bid received (where this can be reasonably ascertained) by extending this bid by one increment, Please enquire in advance about our arrangements for the leaving of commission bids by telephone or fax/ email or via our website or online bidding platform,

About Us
David Duggleby Auctioneers and Valuers is a family-owned business renowned for its exceptional results and dedication to customer service. Our dynamic team includes personable, expert valuers spanning 26 departments. With over 150 regular and specialist auctions annually, we are proud to be among the UK's fastest-growing auction houses.
Founded in 1996 by David and Jane Duggleby, the company began as a modest operation managed solely by the couple. It has since evolved into a formidable team with multiple locations across Yorkshire.
The heart of the operation is based in Scarborough, with the Head Office and Salerooms located on Vine Street. Recognising the growing need to enhance our accessibility and reach, we established a valuation office on Beverley's Wednesday Market in 2018. This addition was quickly followed by a collaboration with Stephensons, resulting in the inception of Duggleby Stephenson of York, further extending our footprint in the auctions world.
In 2023, our growth continued with the launch of a second valuation office located in the town
centre of Harrogate and, as business continues to grow, we look to new locations to bring our services closer to people across the region and beyond.
As business ventures expanded, we established The Duggleby Group. The group now manages and operates seven successful entities across auctions, valuations, removals, and storage. Our removals and storage businesses provide a strong foundation for our Auction Logistics service, providing national collection and delivery for items of any size.
We are committed to excellence in serving both buyers and sellers. Whether it be through our team of dedicated, friendly and highly knowledgeable valuers; our recently extended and modernised salerooms; our bespoke-built online bidding platform; or our state-of-the-art website that makes browsing our collections easier than ever, we are continually striving to enhance your experience with us.
Our aim is to make the future of auctions more accessible, developing our digital platforms and marketing efforts to connect buyers and sellers worldwide while maintaining the quality and personal service that define our brand.
