Thank you for checking out the “Live and Play” brochure, created by the Deer Park Parks and Recreation Department. This brochure includes all the information you need to find a variety of ways to have fun in our community!

As residents of Deer Park, we are fortunate to live in an area that values quality of life, and our Parks and Recreation Department works every day to ensure that our parks, green spaces and recreation opportunities are the best in the region. Throughout 2019, a range of Type B projects including the Softball and Soccer Complexes were completed, not to mention the Deer Park Nature Preserve. Don’t forget, the Maxwell Center and Dow Park Pavilions are also available for use, both perfect for family gatherings, celebrations and more.

Over the next few months, we hope to see you at some of our outdoor events including the Easter EGGstravaganza, Movies in the Park and lots more. Make sure to utilize this brochure as well as the City website and social media channels to stay informed, and we’ll see you outside!

The Parks and Recreation Commission is a council appointed committee that acts as a liaison between the constituents and the Parks and Recreation Department. Meetings are held on the first Monday of the month at 11:30am at the Community Center. Dow Park is where you want to be to hunt over 15,000 eggs for kids 6 months to 9 years old at 10:30am. Come early and enjoy Carrot Pull, Sidewalk Chalk Contest, Rubber Ducky Races and Bunny Bingo. Stay late and enjoy the Reaction group with games, dancing and singing.

Also, don’t forget the Pooch Hunt at Ella & Friends Dog Park at 2pm April 4. Bring your dog on a leash to hunt eggs. No charge!

Project upDATE Parks & Recreation

Deer Park Nature PreservePhase one of the Deer Park Nature Preserve Project that the City of Deer Park worked with Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Army Corps of Engineers was completed. Within this beautiful preserve, you will find a 17-acre Wetland, decomposed granite walking trail, Texas native wildlife, many plants and vegetation and a boardwalk on the trail to assist with saturated and to elevate our visitors. The Nature Preserve is a wonderful asset to the City of Deer Park and we ask all citizens to visit.

New Soccer Complex - The new Deer Park soccer complex is completed. The two-sodded fields have full growth with grass and the remaining four fields consisting of sprigging and hydro mulch will be ready in spring and fall respectfully. The complex has a concession area and restrooms for usage. We have added picnic tables and trashcans to the complex as well. In the near future, we will adding a decomposed granite trails form the concession to the fields on the east side. We hope to one day add more parking and light the two hydro mulch fields.

New Recreation Center and Aquatic Center Study – The City of Deer Park has contracted with Brinkley Sargent Wiginton Architects to develop a needs assessment for a New Community Center and indoor pool, conceptual site plan, project budgets and an Operational cost analysis of proposed building. City Council along with the Parks and Recreation Commission, Deer Park Community Development Corporation and City Administration plus staff have met several times to discuss these aspects for a future facility.

Repair to the Truss of the Historic Bridge at the Battleground Golf Course– Architectural Consultant RPS, Gibson & Associates, Inc, City of Deer Park Staff and Touchstone

Golf have met several times including a preliminary and pre-construction meeting to discuss logistics and discuss relevant items to the project. The Notice to Proceed Letter was sent on June 19, 2019. Battleground Historic Bridge Repair will consist of mobilization of materials and labor, replacing steel members, repair section loss with steel members, filling voids with metal repair composite, cleaning, abrasive blasting, and painting steel. Construction on the bridge has been completed and Golfers have access to the entire course.

Hike and Bike Trails – This is one of the seven projects that was approved at a Special Election for Type B Economic Development Sales and Use Tax Proposition in May 2015. Burditt Consultants LLC has been contracted to administer architectural services for the construction phase. The initial trail will be a 1.04-mile trail that connects East X Street to East P Street and connects Tiffany Amber Park, Wynfield Park, and Running Brook Park by way of existing sidewalks.

North East Hike and Bike Trail Project – The City of Deer Park has begun work on design and layout for the Northeast Hike and Bike trail. The City has received a grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to fund the future trail. RVi Planning was selected as the landscape architecture firm to complete the design work and layout of the trail. Preliminary conceptual design has the trail beginning in Park Green Park and extending south to Runningbrook Park with several trail and path connections along the way. Surveyors have been gathering data from the trail site and that information will soon be utilized to complete the final design and construction documents.

New Projects – The Department will be working on in 2019-2020 FY Phase 1 Bridge Replacement in Dow Park, Recrowning Multipurpose Field at Adult Sports Complex, Repaving Pony Field Parking Lot, and New Concession Stand for Pony/Colt Baseball Fields,

Dow Park Soccer drainage and more.

Spencerview Complex –As one of the seven projects that was approved at a Special Election for Type B Economic Development Sales and Use Tax Proposition in May 2015. TF Harper was contracted to complete the renovation of Baseball Fields at Spencerview Park. Although the fields was renovated, we are still working on the bridge to access Glendale Park to add additional parking. We have hired CobbFendley to prepare and submit a conveyance analysis for review to Harris County Flood Control District and the City of Deer Park. We are moving on this project to construct a pedestrian bridge across HCFCD Unit# B114-00-).

Deer Park Wayfinding Program Signs – Phase one of the Wayfinding Program has been completed with fifteen signs and four monuments in City Parks erected that will assist with wayfinding to various facilities in Deer Park and name the Parks. We are currently working on Phase two of this project with City Staff and National Signs Plaza to locate an additional twenty-five wayfinding signs and two large monuments to be placed at City Hall and the Deer Park Police Department.

Girls Softball Complex - This is one of the seven projects that was approved at a Special Election for Type B Economic Development Sales and Use Tax Proposition in May 2015. The fields has been completed in summer of 2019. The facility has six softball fields, a concession stand along with restrooms. In addition a maintenance facility to store supplies and equipment. The Department in the future is considering the addition of additional parking and add lights to the two fields w/o lights.

When school lets out for early dismissal, send the kids to the Community Center, Room 11 from 12-3pm to hang out, watch a movie, do a craft and play some games. We will also have popcorn! There is no charge for this activity. It is come and go, but if they wish to go in the game room or gym, they will need to bring their membership card. Children will be supervised while participating. Please make sure to let a staff person know if they are not allowed to leave the room on their own. Just show up and enjoy those few extra hours out of school with us!

While DPISD has a half day, have your teen enjoy the rest of their day training like a warrior at Obstacle Warrior Kids. Inspired by the hit television show American Ninja Warrior on NBC, Obstacle Warrior Kids is a place for kids to challenge themselves on a variety of obstacles in an indoor, climate-controlled environment, while having fun! Athletic, closed-toe shoes are required. A signed waiver from Warrior Obstacle Course is required for participation.

There is no school for DPISD on Monday, January 20, but we have you covered with a trip to the Children’s Health Museum as we become doctors and scientists. During the day we will dissect owl pellets, and be rewarded with a souvenir bag. On April 13, we will be gpomg on a wildlife theme adventure. Deer Park Parks and Recreation is partnering with Safe Sitter® to teach young teens how to be better, safer babysitters. For more than 35 years, Safe Sitter® has been a leader in providing life skills, safety skills and child care training for youth. This 6-hour course will have you properly trained and ready for the summer. A student handbook and completion card will go home with each student after taking the class.

Are you a master at hide and seek? You will love geocaching! Geocaching is a way fun, new adventurous way to explore your surroundings. Buddy up or go alone. Last summer, we introduced this fun activity, so this season we are turning it up a notch by offering bigger and better prizes for the first place team who finds all the treasures in Dow Park! Participants will enter the game room to receive instructions. GPS equipment is limited but phone GPS is permitted. All ages are welcome but it is recommended those younger than 12 to have an adult chaperone.

Group classes are a fun and affordable way to get started with dog training. These classes are held with other dog/ owner pairs also eager to learn. The Good Boy Obedience group class covers basic commands that will make life with your dog more enjoyable. Group classes meet for one hour, once a week, for 6 weeks with the first week for owners only. Expect to put in work outside of class meetings. Fencing for the teen and adult fencer, both beginners and those with some experience. Our focus is largely on foil, but sabre and epee are also explored. We learn the basics of footwork and blade work, have open fencing and self-referee. The final class of each month is given over to electric fencing just as a fencer would experience at a local tournament. No personal equipment or prior experience is required to start. Offered to ages 7-12, the summer youth basketball program is perfect for both the beginner and the experienced player. Age divisions are 7-12 (age as of September 1) and divisions will be 7, 8, 9 & 10, 11, 12. All teams will consist of boys and girls and each division will only have space for 80 players. Summer League will have only one practice a week starting in June. Each participant receives a team shirt. The league includes 6 weeks of games. This is a parent-coached league, so if you are interested in volunteering to coach please let us know!

The Maxwell Adult Center is traveling to Schulenburg, TX to visit the Painted Churches of Texas and would love for you join us. We will traveling to Schulenburg on a Harris County bus where we will pick up a guide who will join us on our bus to visit these beautiful churches, along the way we will eat lunch a 1pm at the Oakridge Smokehouse (self pay).

Come join the Maxwell Adult Center for a trip back in time, as we visit the Black Cowboy Museum to learn about the history of the real cowboy. We will leave the Jimmy Burke Activity Center at 10am and head to lunch at the Another Time Soda Fountain (lunch is not included in price) in Rosenburg where the Soda Jerks prepare fountain drinks in the traditional way.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE JIMMY BURKE ACTIVITY CENTER IS THE ONLY FACILITY THAT ALLOWS THE CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL.

Those wishing to reserve a pavilion for a designate time or date can do so on a rental fee basis. Paperwork must be completed by the person using the pavilion and will only be valid for the name on the contract. Subletting of pavilion to another group or patron is not allowed. Any violations of this will result in termination of a contract and loss of all deposits.
