City of Doral Takes Local Action in Celebrating 4th Anniversary of Let’s Move!

uring the month of February, the City of Doral celebrated the 4th Anniversary of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! initiative. Let’s Move! is built on the premise that everyone has a role to play in reducing childhood obesity – from businesses and communities to child care providers, faith leaders, chefs, schools, mayors, parents and individuals. As a component of Let’s Move!, communities across the country are participating in Let’s Move! Cities, Towns and Counties (LMCTC), which calls upon local elected officials to adopt sustainable and holistic approaches that improve communities’ access to healthy affordable food and opportunities for physical activity through five goal areas: 1. Creating a healthy start for children 2. Empowering parents and caregivers 3. Providing healthy food in schools 4. Improving access to healthy, affordable foods 5. Increasing physical activity
urante el mes de febrero, la Ciudad de Doral celebró el cuarto aniversario de la iniciativa de la Primera Dama, Michelle Obama, “Vamos a Movernos – Let’s Move”! Vamos a Movernos! está construido sobre la premisa de que todos tenemos un rol que desempeñar en la reducción de la obesidad infantil - desde las empresas, así como las comunidades, centro de cuidado de niños, líderes religiosos, chefs, escuelas, alcaldes, padres de familia y cualquier individuo. Como componente de “Vamos a Movernos”!, las comunidades de todo el país están participando en este programa en el que instan a los funcionarios electos locales a adoptar enfoques sostenibles e integrales para mejorar el acceso de las comunidades a los alimentos saludables y económicos así como las oportunidades para la actividad física a través de cinco puntos básicos: 1. Crear un comienzo saludable para los menores 2. Dotar de poder a padres de familia y a puericultores 3. Procurar que en las escuelas se ofrezca alimentación saludable 4. In celebration of this anniversary, the City of Doral has made the commitment to being a healthier place to live, work, learn and play by officially joining in the LMCTC initiative and vowing to work to achieve the five goals of the initiative. LMCTC sites have the opportunity to earn up to five gold medals, one for each actionable goal to which they commit as part of the initiative. The City of Doral has already achieved three medals for the following categories: Goal 3 (Smart Servings), Goal 4 (Model Food Service) and Goal 5 (Active Kids at Play). The National League of Cities (NLC) is working in partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services with support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the National Association of Counties and other nonprofit organizations to assist local elected officials who join LMCTC as they implement policy and environmental changes to prevent childhood obesity. La Comisión del Condado de Miami-Dade County Commission Miami-Dade condena el gobierno condemns Venezuelan venezolano government

he Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday, March 4, adopted a resolution to strongly condemn the Venezuelan government’s ongoing human rights abuses and use of violence and intimidation against its political opposition. The resolution, which was co-prime sponsored by Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz and Chairwoman Rebeca Sosa, also expresses its support for those Venezuelans who are valiantly fighting to restore their nation to a peaceful and democratic state and urges the U.S. federal government to take immediate diplomatic action to help restore democracy in Venezuela. “It’s very sad to see what is taking place in Venezuela at this time. People are in peril for their life simply because of their belief in freedom,” Commissioner Diaz said. “We can’t sit by while this is happening so close to our shores and impacting so many of our residents and their loved ones. Enough is enough.” “This is an issue of human rights,” added Chairwoman Sosa. “We have to stand with those who are fighting for democracy and liberty.”

La resolución, que fue co-patrocinada por el Comisionado José “Pepe” Díaz y la Presidenta de la Comisión del Condado, Rebeca Sosa, también expresó su apoyo a los venezolanos que están luchando valientemente para restaurar la paz y la democracia en Venezuela, e insta al gobierno federal de los Estados Unidos a tomar acción diplomática inmediata para ayudar a restaurar la democracia en Venezuela . “Es muy triste ver lo que está ocurriendo en Venezuela en este momento. La gente está en peligro de su vida simplemente por creer en la libertad”, dijo el Comisionado Díaz. “No podemos quedarnos al margen mientras esto está ocurriendo tan cerca de nuestras costas e impactando tantos de nuestros residentes y seres queridos. Basta ya”. “Esta es una cuestión de derechos humanos”, añadió la Presidenta Sosa. “Tenemos que apoyar a los que están luchando por la democracia y la libertad.”

“We, the people of the City of Doral, in order to secure for ourselves the benefits and responsibilities of home rule, and in order to provide a municipal government to serve our present and future needs, and recognizing that the City exists for the purpose of providing for the health, education, safety and welfare of its citizenry, do hereby adopt this Charter” (Preamble, City of Doral Charter, 2003).

“We the People”, the first three words of the U.S. Constitution are also the beginning of the Preamble for the City of Doral Charter, adopted by 92% of voters in June 2003. The inclusiveness of those three words, automatically endows the citizens of Doral with a sense of ownership that should be reflected in their active interest and participation on the current City Charter review process, given the fact that it determines the basic rules of order, collaboration and coexistence within the City boundaries. The City Charter defines the fundamentals of the operation of a municipality, which are fined tuned later through ordinances and resolutions adopted by the elected City Council according to the dynamics of the life and needs of its citizens and business owners. The Charter contemplates, on Article VI, the possibility of amendments, through the appointment by the Council of a “Charter Commission” that should be created and funded every five years. That 2009 Review Commission suggested merely 5 minor amendments to the Charter, which were adopted in March 2010. During the regular Council Meeting of November 2013 the Charter Review Commission members were nominated and started working with the goal of submitting a list of suggestions for amendments to the Council by April 2014.

Commission members are appointed by each of
the Councilmembers, based on their experience, knowledge and commitment to community welfare. They have to be “five electors residing in the City, one of whom shall have served as member of the previous Charter Commission” (City of Doral Charter, Article VI. Section 6.02(b)). The members of the City of Doral Charter Commission in 2003 were Jerome Reisman, Ernesto Anton, Alicia Casanova, Morgan Levy and Santiago Sellan. They were in charge of drafting the original Charter approved in June 2003. On the other hand, Ramiro Areces, Tom Daly, Jerome Reisman, Jesse Jones and Francois Illas were the members appointed for the 2009 Charter Review Commission. The current members of the Charter Commission are: Christian Mazzola, nominated by Councilwoman Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera; Eduardo Gomez, nominated by Mayor Luigi Boria; Jesse Jones, nominated by Councilwoman Ana Maria Rodriguez; Raymond Bush, nominated by Vice Mayor Christi Fraga; and Jerome Reisman.
What points of the Charter are being reviewed?
The fact that there were disagreements among the Councilmembers in the last months of 2013 generated the public opinion that it would somehow influence the review of the Charter, and that this opportunity would be taken to shake the foundations and redefine the government of the city. However, other sectors of the community have expressed the view that if something has worked fine for 10 years it should not be changed. In any case, the current dynamics and needs of the city have made it imperative to review several of the fundamentals of the city government. The commission on their first meeting prepared a list of issues to review that included, among others: • Staggered terms for Councilmembers. Term limits; Reelection • Form of Government: Strong Mayor vs. Mayor-Council-City Manager; Number of Councilmembers; Rotation of seats, filling vacancies. Vice Mayor position, role and rotation • Provisions for Recall of elected officials • Appointment, removal, terms, powers and compensation of Charter Officials (City Manager, City Clerk, City Attorney).
• Charter Amendment Process • Compensation of elected officials • Code of Ethics and Naming of public places • Appointment of members for City boards and agencies • Guidelines for special meetings • Budget process • Election process and timelines • Municipal service trust fund requirements • Funding of special groups • Lay down items Several of these items have been discussed already and amendment suggestions have been drafted. The key fundamentals of the operation of the city are being reviewed and the participation of the community in the discussion is very important to ensure the understanding of the proposed changes by the time the amendment is placed in a ballot to be approved, during a special election in the upcoming months. This must be the single most important aspect for the community to be aware and actively intervene, to ensure the City continues to be the perfect place to “live, learn, work and play” it has been since incorporation.
How can the community participate?
The month of March has six meetings scheduled for the commission. Community members are welcomed to attend, listen to the discussion and provide their input during Public Comments time allotted. The meetings will take place on March 13, 17, 18, 25 and 31st according to the City of Doral Calendar. All meetings are at 9 am at the City of Doral Chambers and can be seen live on Channel 77 (Comcast) and through the internet at the City of Doral website. Citizens that would like to send their suggestions, comments or proposals to the Charter Review Commission can do so by email to the address charterreviewcommission@cityofdoral.com or to the City Clerk at cityclerk@cityofdoral.com There is no reason not to be informed of what changes are being suggested to our basic rules of coexistence and to voice your opinion. Get informed and get involved. That is what will ensure Doral continues being a great city!

Revisión de la Carta Constitutiva de la Ciudad de Doral: ¿Por qué es importante?

“Nosotros, el pueblo de la Ciudad de Doral, adoptamos la presente Carta Constitutiva, para asegurarnos los beneficios y responsabilidades de la autogestión y para proveer un gobierno municipal que se adapte a nuestras necesidades presentes y futuras, reconociendo que la Ciudad existe para proveer salud, educación, seguridad y bienestar a sus ciudadanos” (Preámbulo, Carta Constitutiva de la Ciudad de Doral, 2003)

“Nosotros, el pueblo”, las primeras tres palabras de la Constitución de los EEUU, cuyos principios fundamentales han permanecido inalterables por más de 200 años, son también las palabras que dan inicio al preámbulo de la Carta Constitutiva de la Ciudad de Doral, adoptada por el 92% de los votantes en Junio 2003. Esas palabras automáticamente generan un sentido de pertenencia para los ciudadanos de Doral que debería reflejarse en su interés y participación activa en el actual proceso de revisión de la Carta, puesto que en ella se determinan las reglas básicas de orden, colaboración y convivencia que rigen en la Ciudad. La Carta Constitutiva define la operación fundamental de la ciudad, cuyos detalles son afinados luego a través de las resoluciones y ordenanzas que adoptan los miembros del Concejo, de acuerdo a las reglas, dinámica de vida y necesidades de los ciudadanos y empresarios de la ciudad. En su Artículo VI, la Carta contempla la posibilidad de enmiendas, a través de una “Comisión de Revisión”, nominada cada 5 años. La Comisión de Revisión del 2009 apenas sugirió 5 cambios menores a la Carta, los cuales fueron adoptados en marzo 2010. El pasado mes de Noviembre 2013 en su Sesión ordinaria, los miembros del Concejo nominaron los miembros de la nueva comisión, quienes tienen la tarea de revisar la Carta Constitutiva y someter a la revisión y aprobación del Concejo su lista de sugerencias de enmienda para Abril 2014.

¿Quiénes son los miembros de la Comisión?
Cada uno de los miembros del Concejo nomina un miembro de la Comisión de Revisión, tomando en cuenta su experiencia, conocimiento y compromiso con el bienestar de la comunidad. La Comisión está compuesta por “Cinco electores, residentes de la Ciudad, uno de los cuales debe haber formado parte de alguna de las Comisiones de Revisión anteriores”. (Carta Constitutiva de Doral, Articulo VI. Sección 6.02(b)). En 2003 los miembros de la Comisión fueron Jerome Reisman, Ernesto Anton, Alicia Casanova, Morgan Levy y Santiago Sellan. Ellos tuvieron la responsabilidad de elaborar la Carta Constitutiva original, aprobada en Junio 2003. En el 2009, los miembros designados para la Comisión fueron Ramiro Areces, Tom Daly, Jerome Reisman, Jesse Jones y Francois Illas. Los miembros actuales de la Comisión de Revisión son: Christian Mazzola, nominado por la Concejal Bettina Rodríguez Aguilera; Eduardo Gómez, nominado por el Alcalde Mayor Luigi Boria; Jesse Jones, nominado por la Concejal Ana María Rodríguez; Raymond Bush, nominado por la Vice Alcalde Christi Fraga; y Jerome Reisman.
¿Cuáles aspectos están siendo revisados?
Los evidentes desacuerdos que se suscitaron entre los miembros del Concejo a finales del 2013 generaron en la opinión pública la impresión de que de algún modo esto influenciaría la revisión de la Carta Constitutiva y que esta oportunidad sería utilizada para sacudir las bases y redefinir el gobierno de la ciudad. Sin embargo, otros sectores de la comunidad han expresado su visión opinando que si lo que tenemos ha funcionado por 10 años no tiene sentido cambiarlo. En cualquier caso, la dinámica y necesidades actuales de la ciudad han hecho imperativa la revisión de fundamentos del gobierno municipal en el seno de la Comisión. La lista preliminar de aspectos a analizar incluyó entre otros: • Periodos escalonados de los Concejales; límites y reelección. • Forma de Gobierno: Alcalde Fuerte vs. Alcalde-Concejo-Administrador. Número de Concejales; Rotación de roles; Cobertura de vacantes. Posición de Vice Alcalde, rol y rotación. • Provisiones para revocar oficiales electos
• Designación, remoción, periodo de servicio, poderes y compensación de Oficiales (Administrador, Secretario, Asesor Jurídico) • Proceso de Revisión de la Carta Constitutiva • Compensación de Oficiales Electos • Código de ética y denominación de sitios públicos • Designación de miembros para comités y agencias municipales • Instructivos para reuniones especiales • Proceso presupuestario • Proceso electoral y calendario de ejecución • Fondos para grupos especiales A la fecha, la Comisión ha trabajado diligentemente discutiendo varios de estos aspectos y se han generado sugerencias de enmienda. Los fundamentos de la operación de la ciudad están siendo revisados y la participación ciudadana en la discusión es sumamente importante para que la colectividad comprenda la magnitud e impacto de los cambios propuestos y tome una decisión informada en el momento que estos sean sometidos a aprobación en una boleta electoral. La comunidad debe intervenir activamente durante este proceso. Es la única manera de asegurarse que Doral continuará siendo el sitio perfecto para “vivir, aprender, trabajar y jugar” que ha sido desde su incorporación.
¿Cómo puede participar la comunidad?
Durante el mes de Marzo, están pautadas 6 reuniones de la Comisión. Los miembros de la comunidad pueden participar en la discusión durante el periodo de Comentarios Públicos. Las fechas de las reuniones son: 13, 17, 18, 25 y 31 de Marzo, a las 9 am en la Cámara de Reuniones del Ayuntamiento. Pueden verse estas reuniones en vivo en el Canal 77 (Comcast) y a través del internet en el sitio web de la Ciudad de Doral. Committed to create something to last generations Ivanka Trump Honored guest at DBC – WAG Luncheon

he Doral Business Council’s Women’s Alliance Group (DBC-WAG) held their 5th annual women’s luncheon last Thursday February 27th, the first on their series of activities to promote businesswomen in the community this year. “It is essential that we provide this platform for our businesses. We are looking forward to bring residents and businesses these opportunities” said Mr. Raul Pino, Chairman of the DBC before introducing Ms. Christi Fraga, Vice Mayor of the City of Doral and Chair of the WAG who recognized the opportunity it has been for her to work with this dynamic group of professionals to bring “a great understanding of the challenges of businesswomen in the community”. The current members of the DBC-WAG Board of Directors are Ashely Artiles-Bolanos, Silvia Borges, Gloria Burns, Isabel Del Castillo, Theresa Gonzalez, Andrea Ivory, Maria Martinez, Maria Mendez, Cappy Rismay, Terry Tundidor-Gonzalez and Sara Valega.

This group of successful businesswomen is focused on providing members and non-members of the DBC in the community with the adequate forums to interact with other professional women in the area, for them to receive the support, guidance and build networks that will enhance their business opportunities. In a ballroom packed with Doralian businesswomen, and a few businessmen, the DBC-WAG luncheon was an extraordinary success. There were members of all different business ventures in the city: finance and banking; hospitality; health services; communications; consulting services and education. Supporting the initiative and as valued members
of the DBC, several members of the City of Doral Council and staff attended the event, including the Mayor Mr. Luigi Boria, Councilwoman Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera, City Manager Mr. Joe Carollo, City Clerk Ms. Barbara Herrera and Parks and Recreation Director Barbara Hernandez, along with other members of the staff. The guest speaker selected for the event was Ms. Ivanka Trump, Vice President of Development and Acquisitions for the Trump Organization, who shared with the attendees her experience as businesswoman and entrepreneur. Choosing Ms. Trump to address the guests at the luncheon was not by chance. She is “an example of the future of the City of Doral and its business leaders” as Ms. Fraga described her in her presentation. A young woman, wife, mother and entrepreneur, Ms. Trump embodies the example of a successful businesswoman and her presentation was a testament of the commitment of the Trump Organization to making the Trump National Doral an oasis for the community. “Our organization has undergone the renovations and had an ambitious project. It responded to the highest standards not only in the country but in the world; that is our ambition and our goal; that is what we are working for” explained Ms. Trump. The renovations of the Trump National Doral represent an investment of nearly $250 million worth of improvements, which include the redesign of the iconic Blue Monster Golf Course and general upgrading and updating of the hotel villas and other facilities of the resort. Being selected as the guest speaker at the DBC-WAG luncheon gave Ms. Trump the perfect opportunity to interact with members of the Doral business community and to share with them the vision for the Trump National Doral: “This is such a vibrant city. We knew we wanted to create something spectacular; we knew Doral had an enormous potential, the question was how far we should get. We are really committed to create something to last generations. We are a family company. We think in terms of my daughter, my son, for them to be proud of what we have done. We love to create relationships with the community, to support each other”. Thinking about getting all the community involved, not only the golf players, Ms. Trump has planned many different events at the resort, including
the Fashion Fridays, the first of which took place on March 7th, within the Cadillac World Golf Championship, with the fashion show by Venezuelan designer Carolina Herrera. Balancing work and personal life is not easy for someone as busy as Ms. Trump, but she is able to manage it by being very passionate about her work. It shows in the exquisite taste and care for detail in the renovations of the resort. “I learned from my father to find a true passion in life. I am very fortunate to be passionate about what I do. The only way to do that is to love what you do and going to work, I am very passionate about it”. It is that passion for her work and the results of it, what makes Ivanka Trump an example for future women business leaders, like all the members of the Doral Business Council Women’s Alliance Group, and events like this luncheon, with the enthusiast participation of the community, are the perfect venue for businesswomen to continue striving for success with the support of the DBC.

l grupo Women’s Alliance de la cámara de comercio Doral Business Council (DBCWAG), realizó su 5to almuerzo anual el pasado jueves 27 de Febrero. Esta es la primera de la serie de actividades que tienen planificadas para promover durante este año a las mujeres empresarias de la ciudad. “Es esencial poder proporcionar esta plataforma para nuestros negocios. Deseamos poner a disposición de nuestros negocios y residentes todas estas oportunidades” dijo el Sr. Raúl Pino, Presidente del DBC, antes de presentar a la Sra. ría y educación entre otros. Estuvieron en el evento apoyando la iniciativa, como miembros del DBC, el Alcalde Sr. Luigi Boria, la Concejal Sra. Bettina Rodriguez Aguilera y empleados de la Ciudad como el Administrador Sr. Joe Carollo, la City Clerk Sra. Bárbara Herrera y la Directora de Parques y Recreación Srta. Bárbara Hernández, entre otras mujeres ejecutivas que trabajan para la municipalidad. La invitada de honor del evento fue la Sra. Ivanka Trump, Vicepresidente de Desarrollo y Adquisiciones de la Organización Trump, quien compartió con los asistentes su experiencia como mujer profesional, madre y empresaria. Trump en su introducción como “un ejemplo del futuro de la Ciudad de Doral y sus líderes de negocio”, pues siendo una mujer joven, esposa, madre y profesional es perfecta referencia de una empresaria exitosa y su presencia en el evento evidencia el compromiso de la Organización Trump de convertir el Trump National Doral Resort en un oasis para la comunidad. “Nuestra organización ha realizado grandes remodelaciones dentro del marco de un proyecto muy ambicioso. Están alineadas con los más altos estándares de calidad no solo del país sino a nivel mundial. Esa es nuestra ambición y nuestra meta, para ello estamos trabajando”, explicó la Sra. Trump con referencia a los hermosos resultados que se han obtenido en el proyecto de renovación del resort. La inversión en mejoras del Trump National Doral Resort es aproximadamente de $250 millones, incluyendo el rediseño del famoso Campo de Golf Blue Monster y las renovaciones y actualizaciones a las villas, habitaciones y otras facilidades del hotel. Ramón Rodríguez, más allá del salón de clases
“Lo que te hace valiente son tus ideas” De defensor de los Derechos Humanos en Cuba a maestro de historia en Miami, Ramón Rodríguez sostiene que el rol social de los ciudadanos se ha ido perdiendo en pro del bienestar individual, lo cual ha ido en detrimento de los sistemas políticos. Soñé con cambiar las cosas por las buenas, con cambiar a mi país sin sangre”, con estas palabras describe el maestro Ramón Rodríguez sus años como defensor de los Derechos Humanos en su natal Cuba de la que tuvo que salir forzosamente hace 19 años. Ramón Rodríguez se desempeña como profesor de historia y cívica en el middle school de la escuela Dr. Rolando Espinoza K-8 Center de Doral, donde trata de transmitir a sus alumnos la importancia de la democracia y la libertad de expresión, a través de la historia y de la experiencia que le da el haber sido un perseguido político en Cuba. Rodríguez fue amenazado, víctima y prisionero del régimen castrista en sus años de juventud cuando, ya siendo un profesional de la educación, entendió su responsabilidad como ciudadano frente a un sistema de gobierno que no dejaba que su pueblo tuviese libertad de expresión, ni de pensamiento. En Miami, se enamoró de la historia de Estados Unidos y de su Constitución, en la que, según las palabras del maestro Rodríguez, está plasmada la base del sistema democrático, que no se limita a ejercer el derecho al voto, sino que permite y estimula las libertades plenas.
Explica que le inculcaron desde niño que Fidel y la patria eran lo mismo, pero su espíritu de libertad lo llevó a oponerse al sistema, haciéndose miembro de una organización de Derechos Humanos, a través de la cual trató de cambiar los destinos de su patria en un vano intento de enfrentarse al régimen sin violencia. Su lucha social lo llevó a ser expulsado de su trabajo, blanco de constantes amenazas y prisionero político en varias oportunidades. “A veces, era más feliz cuando estaba preso, porque sentía que estaba ahí por mis ideales y eso, en cierta forma, me hacía libre, a pesar de estar tras las rejas de una cárcel”. Una de las más fuertes experiencias que vivió Rodríguez en prisión fue cuando lo mantuvieron once días encerrado tras convocar a una manifestación contra el gobierno en la Plaza de la Revolución. A

Al pueblo cubano se le obliga a vivir atemorizado, asegura Rodríguez, frase con la que pretende explicar las razones por las que la población de esta isla no ha logrado oponerse frontalmente al poder de los Castro. “En Cuba cuando piensas diferente te da miedo decírselo hasta a tu familia”. Ante este panorama de miedo y escasez, a los luchadores desprotegidos como Ramón Rodríguez no les queda otra alternativa que salir de su patria, por eso es que “los cubanos estamos regados por todo el mundo y definitivamente, cuando el pueblo se va hay que analizar al gobierno”. Asegura que toda la escasez alimentaria que padece el pueblo de Cuba es una política de Estado para que la población mantenga la mente ocupada en tratar de conseguir la comida diaria y no tengan tiempo de pensar en la situación política de su país. “En Cuba no hay comida, no hay ropa, pero lo más grave es que no hay libertad”.

Sin embargo, insistió Rodríguez, “son tus ideas las que te hacen valiente, así que encontré la serenidad para soportar estos momentos tan duros. Cuando te opones al régimen cubano sufres un proceso en el que, primero, tratan de persuadirte y convencerte
La experiencia de Ramón Rodríguez como defensor de los Derechos Humanos y conocedor de la historia Latinoamericana y de Estados Unidos, le otorga el justo derecho de hacer un llamado al pueblo de Venezuela que, a su juicio, sigue la senda trazada por el gobierno de Cuba. “Los venezolanos deben unirse bajo un mismo destino: lograr la salida del sistema gubernamental de Nicolás Maduro. No es el momento de protagonismo, es el momento de unirse y permitir que exista el pluralismo necesario para el rescate de Venezuela”, acotó Rodríguez. Asegura que las estrategias de gobiernos como los de Cuba y Venezuela es sembrar el odio para crear divisiones, así que la única vía válida para que el proceso que viven los venezolanos culmine con la recuperación de la democracia en ese país es que sus ciudadanos de unan bajo el único objetivo de salir de quienes ostentan el poder en la actualidad.

etting your child decide what they are going to study is the base for everything that comes after high school. Recent research shows that students who decide early and with a specific plan for the profession they wish to pursue are more likely to succeed in school, access higher education and graduate. It is never too early to get involved in the search for a profession. If your child has decider on a major it will be easier to take the right classes, get involved in activities that appeal to them and look for the ideal university. Of course, this process is not simple because, generally, teenagers what are unsure of future plans and parents do not have enough information to guide them. An important initial step is to know which professions are most in demand at the moment. The counselor from Florida International University (FIU), Sofia Santiesteban , guides us by pointing out that the most popular careers among young people like Biology, Psychology and Criminology, are not necessarily the most sought after in the workplace. Although providing this information, Santiesteban recommended to verify this information with official sources such as the Secretary of Labor Statistics of the U.S. (for its initials in English , BLS), which indicates that majors with greater job growth are currently those related to health care . The U.S. population is aging with a greater need for health care and in South Florida this requirement is even more evident, since there are many elderly people who come to spend their retirement years in this area due to the weather. As a result it is estimated that there will be an increase in demand for physicians and surgeons. There are opportunities in all of the areas of health care, with more than 1 million jobs for registered nurses and a high demand for aides, orderlies and home health aides. The BLS predicts a higher demand for elementary school teachers, followed closely by teachers after high school and college professors. According to the Department of Education in the United States, it is estimated up to 200,000 new hires annually. Vacancies in the field of education such as teacher’s assistants will also experience an increase due to the upcoming official regulation of this level. Environmental economy is also an area to

The BLS lists biomedical engineering as the fastest growing occupation in the country. The available jobs are predicted to increase up to 72 percent by 2018. The biochemical and biophysical are also in great demand due to their to the link area of healthcare.
Other area to consider is accounting. A greater regulation of financial services and other corporative sectors, result in a greater need of professionals who crunch numbers. The BLS expects that job opportunities for accountants to rise more than 20 percent in 2018. The accountants with international experience will have a greater application. Advertising is another field that is expected to grow in the next decade that will probably come in form of strategic advertising. Prospective advertising specialists need to have data analysis skills and abilities to keep up with the alwayschanging landscape of social media.

Knowing which careers will have a secure workplace is not enough. It is essential to have a broad knowledge of what your child likes and allow them to discover their talents. Therefore their college decision is one of the most important decisions they will make without their parents help. The first step to find possible careers is to complete a self-assessment: What do they like to do? What are their skills and abilities? How do they see themselves in the future? What economic level do they aspire? Find out what your child is good at and combine this with what he or she likes to do to find a career they will love. The idea is to help your

A university can offer scholarships to students who demonstrate high levels in academics, athletic or artistic performance, enrolling in certain careers or meet certain regional profiles. Internet searches may also give scholarship tips, but be cautious, as frauds in scholarships are very common. ue su hijo decida qué va a estudiar es la base de todo lo que viene después del high school. Algunas investigaciones recientes demuestran que los estudiantes que deciden con tiempo y con un plan específico la profesión a la cual desean dedicarse, tienen más posibilidades de triunfar en la escuela, acceder a la educación superior y graduarse. Nunca es muy temprano para involucrarse en la búsqueda profesional, de esta manera, si su hijo se decide por una carrera será más fácil que tomé las clases adecuadas, se involucre en las actividades que le atraigan y busque una universidad ideal para él. Claro, este proceso no es nada sencillo porque, generalmente, los jovencitos no saben que quieren hacer con su futuro y los padres no tienen la suficiente información para orientarlos. Un importante paso inicial es saber cuáles son las profesiones de mayor demanda en la actualidad y con más proyección a futuro. La consejera de la Florida International University (FIU), Sofia Santiesteban, nos orienta sobre esto al señalar que las carreras más populares entre los jóvenes como Biología, Piscología y Criminalística, no son necesariamente las más solicitadas en el ámbito laboral. A pesar de proporcionar esta información, Santiesteban recomienda verificar estos datos con las fuentes oficiales como la Secretaría de Estadísticas Laborales de Estados Unidos (por su siglas en inglés, BLS), la cual indica que entre las carreras con mayor crecimiento laboral en la actualidad se encuentran las relacionadas con los cuidados de salud. La población de Estados Unidos está envejeciendo con una mayor necesidad de cuidados a la salud y en el sur de la Florida este requerimiento es aún más evidente, pues son muchas las personas de edad avanzada que vienen a pasar su vejez en esta zona por las bondades climáticas, por lo que se estima que habrá un incremento en la demanda de médicos y cirujanos. Hay oportunidades en todas las áreas del cuidado de la salud, con más de 1 millón de trabajos para enfermeras registradas y una alta solicitud de ayudantes, camilleros y auxiliares de salud en el hogar.
La difícil e inteligente decisión universitaria
La BLS predice una mayor demanda en profesores de escuela elemental, seguidos de cerca por los maestros después de la secundaria y los maestros de preparatoria. De acuerdo con el Departamento de Educación de Estados Unidos, se calculan hasta 200 mil nuevas contrataciones anualmente. Las vacantes para trabajar en educación como auxiliar de pre-kindergarten también experimentaran un incremento debido a la próxima regulación oficial de este nivel. La economía ambiental también es un área a tomar en cuenta. Mientras que el país lucha por la seguridad energética y disminuir los efectos del calentamiento global, existe un incremento en la demanda de los científicos altamente especializados, investigadores y técnicos en trabajos de energía verde, que se involucren en el desarrollo o instalación de paneles solares, sistemas geotérmicos o la infraestructura para los vehículos que utilizan hidrógeno. En la construcción, también habrá necesidad de especialistas que construyan y mantengan estructuras en los estándares verdes. Para muchos jovencitos curiosos de las computadoras y la tecnología será una buena noticia saber que IT (TI, por sus siglas en español) es una de las carreras de mayor crecimiento, especialmente en el área de seguridad de sistemas, debido al incremento de datos personales que son almacenados electrónicamente. El aumento en el flujo de información provee una oportunidad para los analistas de comunicaciones
de datos y los administradores de sistemas de redes. Este campo también se intercepta con el cuidado a la salud y habrá un enorme crecimiento en la demanda de especialistas informáticos en los ambientes hospitalarios, ya que los cuidados de la salud comienzan a implementar el equipo de diagnóstico remoto y los registros médicos sin papel. La BLS enlista la ingeniería biomédica como la ocupación de crecimiento más rápido en el país. Los empleos disponibles se predice que aumentarán hasta un 72 por ciento antes del 2018. Los bioquímicos y los biofísicos también estarán en gran demanda, debido a su vinculación con el área de cuidados de salud. Otra área a tomar en cuenta es la contaduría. Una mayor regulación de los servicios financieros y otros sectores corporativos, se traduce en una mayor necesidad de profesionales que peleen con números. La BLS espera que las oportunidades de trabajo para los actuarios se eleven más del 20 por ciento en el 2018. Los actuarios y contadores que tengan experiencia internacional tendrán aún mayor solicitud. La publicidad es otra carrera que se prevé que alimente un crecimiento en la siguiente década que probablemente vendrá en forma de trabajos de publicidad estratégica de alto nivel. Los futuros especialistas en publicidad necesitarán tener habilidades de análisis de datos, así como capacidad de mantenerse a la altura del panorama siempre cambiante de los medios sociales.
SIGUE LA BUSQUEDA
Saber en cuales carreras se podrá tener asegurado el campo laboral no es suficiente. Es imprescindible tener un amplio conocimiento de que le gusta hacer a su hijo y descubrir sus verdaderos talentos, pues la decisión universitaria es una de las más importantes que tendrá que tomar como adulto y sin la ayuda paterna será muy difícil que escoja la opción adecuada. El primer paso para encontrar posibles carreras es completar una autoevaluación: ¿Qué le gusta hacer?, ¿Cuáles son sus intereses y habilidades?, ¿Cómo se ven a futuro? y ¿Qué nivel económico

aspiran tener?. Averiguar para qué es bueno su hijo y combinar esto con lo que le gusta hacer es la mejor manera de encontrar una carrera que ame. La idea básica es que ayude a su hijo a darse cuenta dónde se unen sus talentos e intereses. El proceso continúa con la elección de la institución adecuada, lo cual involucra una variedad de factores, entre los que se incluyen sus intereses, metas profesionales, situación financiera, al igual que el costo del centro de enseñanza, su tamaño y ubicación, así como los requisitos de admisión. Una búsqueda productiva de universidades, colleges u otras instituciones educativas, puede resultar difícil, pero existen herramientas web como la ofrecida por el Departamento de Trabajo de Estados Unidos para encontrar opciones ajustadas a sus necesidades y preferencias. Otra opción válida para la búsqueda de centros educativos es la información proporcionada a estudiantes y padres en los últimos nivel del high school. Es importante aprovechar estos datos de la mejor forma posible, pues ofrecen una guía sencilla y gratuita de las formas más viables de acceder a la educación superior. El premio “Un Maestro Especial” es otorgado anualmente por la cadena de televisión Univisión 23 y Papa John´s Pizza con el propósito de destacar la labor de los docentes del condado de MiamiDade, al considerar que los profesores son los profesionales más influyentes en la vida de los niños y por ende, la columna vertebral del futuro de nuestra sociedad. Para este premio, que será promocionado por Univisión hasta la fecha de su entrega en el próximo mes de mayo del 2014, Aylem Peña fue nominada por su propia escuela, a través de su colega Allison Faehnle, tras reconocer el esfuerzo que hace por cada uno de sus niños y las cualidades profesionales que la hacen una persona valiosa para la comunidad y cuyos méritos ya habían sido reconocidos al ser seleccionada “The Teacher of Year 2011-2012”. Un maestro debe ser activo, así como lo son los niños, considera Aylem Peña, por lo que es necesario prepararse para cada clase, estar dispuesto a aprender de cada estudiante y evolucionar con ellos. Sus más de 24 años como docente, la llevan a asegurar que la educación no puede ser estática.
LA MAESTRA AYLEM
Como maestra y madre de dos hijos de 15 y 16 años de edad, Aylem Peña insiste en la importancia de la integración de los padres al sistema escolar. Está convencida de que la principal carencia educativa de algunos niños es la falta de interés de su familia en su evolución académica. “Los niños necesitan orientación. Cuando salen de la escuela necesitan ayuda, alguien que los guie en sus tareas y que se relacione con sus profesores”. Comprende que las obligaciones labores de los padres limitan esta función, pero también quiere hacer entender que es indispensable la ayuda paterna para el éxito escolar de cada pequeño. Una de las mayores satisfacciones de la maestra Aylem es ver como muchos de sus estudiantes de

Thomas en Doral, hasta el 2008 cuando fue parte del equipo fundador de la institución educativa Dr. Rolando Espinoza K-8 Center, a la cual pertenece en la actualidad. kindergarten ya saben leer y cree que esto es el resultado del interés de los niños, la preocupación de los padres y la motivación que ella ha logrado inculcar en sus alumnos, por lo cual insiste en que en la educación infantil todas las partes deben involucrarse. Al agradecer el premio que le ha sido otorgado, Aylem Peña no deja de comentar que este tipo de reconocimientos es una gran motivación para los maestros, pues no siempre la labor docente es tomada en cuenta. Manifiesta que, si bien el cariño permanente de todos los niños es la mejor de las retribuciones, el maestro debería tener una mayor valoración social. Una anécdota para recordar… De sus años de docencia en Cuba, Aylem Peña nunca olvidará al joven pelotero, un muchacho de unos 14 años que se escapaba de la escuela. La mamá desesperada de aquel niño acudió a la joven Aylem para pedir ayuda y ella descubrió que el niño se fugaba a la costa porque no tenía nadie con quien jugar pelota. La maestra Aylem le ofreció que si no faltaba a clases durante un mes, ella lo iba a llevar un sábado, junto a todos sus compañeros de clase, a jugar pelota en la Ciudad Deportiva. El muchacho cumplió su promesa y ella también, así que caminó tres kilómetros, con 60 niños bajo su responsabilidad hasta llegar a la Ciudad Deportiva para disfrutar un inolvidable juego y lograr que su muchacho nunca más faltara a clases.

n February 13-15, 2014 The Joy of Learning joined Project Zero, an educational research group at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in a conference entitled Project Zero Perspectives: How and Where Does Learning Thrive. Project Zero research group includes multiple initiatives and interdisciplinary research projects that focus on the processes of learning rather than the product. Some of the investigations embrace the nature of intelligence, understanding, thinking, creativity and ethics. The conference invited educators to reflect deeply on how they design and facilitate learning for their students. The proposal of our presentation was to demonstrate the potentiality of what happens when we begin the process of modeling empathy in our children at our pre-school age.

Their responses, somewhat unemotional were almost as habitual as the routine. What else could they be possibly feeling? Are they lacking the necessary vocabulary to express their feelings? Do they worry? Are they Tired? Anxious? Fantastic? Afraid? Proud? Secure? How can we learn the language of their feelings? What is the emotional life of our children?” We began working together in cultivating empathy through the use of literature, thinking routines, teaching for understanding, documentation (including reflection) and the principles of the Reggio Emilia Philosophy. Much of today’s focus on skills that need to be developed for students as well as teachers is based on dispositions of which Empathy is paramount. What is empathy? Why is this being referenced to as one the 21st Century skills that needs to be fomented in our youth. How do we help our children develop empathy; “that ultimate human trait”, that “emotional literacy” that allows us the ability to understand the other; to connect; to step inside another’s feeling and allow ourselves to experience ‘their‘ perspective. Daniela Foerch, Ph.D, Early Childhood Educator at Florida International University, approached The Joy of Learning with an interest in conducting research in helping children become more empathetic. To nourish empathy in the formative years of our children gives a quintessential value to the concept of nurturing our youth. The Joy of Learning and Daniela formed an alliance and began a process to foster empathy within a community of

What practices and policies can we implement that will protect our children and help them develop to their full potential? This presentation offers opportunities to analyze how thinking routines and global thinking routines engage preschoolers in the nurturing of global habits of mind that enables them to listen with empathy and think flexibly as they attempt to see the world though the perspectives of others. In this presentation special emphasis will be given to how preschoolers become aware of their own emotions, how to manage their emotions, and the emotions of others in the classroom. We will also discuss how they learn about the relationship between the brain and the mind. The 21st Century requires students to learn in globally-minded classroom cultures and advance their global competence. This presentation will provide a platform for exploring best practices
Empathy as we see a shift from “I feel” towards “I feel with you” as relationships are being built, and a strong sense of community in the classroom is being developed. Empathy as the ability to understand the feelings of others, feel what they feel and eventually respond in helpful and compassionate ways. This is our goal! Moving forward, on April 10-13, 2014, The Joy of Learning represented by Paula Luzzi Panno, Andrea Muñoz and Daniela Foerch will be presenting in Vancouver Canada. “The Global Summit on Childhood”, a program within the Decade for Childhood, will provide a platform for interdisciplinary dialogue among the global community about Project Zero along with the Visible Thinking South Florida Members the experience of childhood. Participants and presenters will explore the current state of childhood, including issues affecting education and and research to incorporate a call for action to assist mental and physical well-being, from international, young children in nurturing empathy to become global competent and be able to see the world from cross-cultural, and cross-disciplinary perspectives. What societal changes provide opportunities for different perspectives.

Helping Children Manage Stress

You can help your child handle new or frustrating situations and teach ways of managing stress that will be valuable throughout his or her life.
occer or baseball practice, guitar lessons, piano recitals, birthday parties, test, a full homework load, several school projects and more... !! In today’s competitive environment, where kids feel they need to excel at so many different things, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. Although stress is part of our daily lives, parents shouldn’t feel powerless. One of the most important things you can do is to help your child learn to manage stress effectively, so that he or she can live a healthy, balanced life – and as a parent of a child with activities, you can, too. Kids deal with stress in both healthy and unhealthy ways. And while they may not initiate a conversation about what’s bothering them, they do want their parents to reach out and help them cope with their troubles. But it’s not always easy for parents to know what to do for a child who’s feeling stressed. Here are a few ideas: Notice out loud. Tell your child when you notice that something’s bothering him or her. If you can, name the feeling you think your child is experiencing. (“It seems like you’re still mad about what happened at the playground.”) This shouldn’t sound like an accusation (as in, “OK, what happened now? Are you still mad about that?”) or put a child on the spot. It’s just a casual observation that you’re interested in hearing more about your child’s concern. Be sympathetic and show you care and want to understand. Listen to your child. Ask your child to tell you what’s wrong. Listen attentively and calmly — with interest, patience, openness, and caring. Avoid any urge to judge, blame, lecture, or say what you think your child should have done instead. The idea is to let your child’s concerns (and feelings) be heard. Try to get the whole story by asking questions like “And then what happened?” Take your time. And let your child take his or her time, too.

Comment briefly on the feelings you think your child was experiencing. For example, you might say “That must have been upsetting,” “No wonder you felt mad when they wouldn’t let you in the game,” or “That must have seemed unfair to you.” Doing this shows that you understand what your child felt, why, and that you care. Feeling understood and listened to helps your child feel supported by you, and that is especially important in times of stress.

Put a label on it. Many younger kids do not yet have words for their feelings. If your child seems angry or frustrated, use those words to help him or her learn to identify the emotions by name. Putting feelings into words helps kids communicate and
develop emotional awareness — the ability to recognize their own emotional states. Kids who can do so are less likely to reach the behavioral boiling point where strong emotions come out through behaviors rather than communicated with words. Help your child think of things to do. If there’s a specific problem that’s causing stress, talk together about what to do. Encourage your child to think of a couple of ideas. You can start the brainstorming if necessary, but don’t do all the work. Your child’s active participation will build confidence. Support the good ideas and add to them as needed. Ask, “How do you think this will work?” Listen and move on. Sometimes talking and listening and feeling understood is all that’s needed to help a child’s frustrations begin to melt away. Afterward, try changing the subject and moving on to something more positive and relaxing. Help your child think of something to do to feel better. Don’t give the problem more attention than it deserves. Limit stress where possible. If certain situations are causing stress, see if there are ways to change things. For instance, if too many after-school activities consistently cause homework stress, it might be necessary to limit activities to leave time and energy for homework. Just be there. Kids don’t always feel like talking about what’s bothering them. Sometimes that’s OK. Let your kids know you’ll be there when they do feel like talking. Even when kids don’t want to talk, they usually don’t want parents to leave them alone. You can help your child feel better just by being there — keeping him or her company, spending time together. So if you notice that your child seems to be down in the dumps, stressed, or having a bad day — but doesn’t feel like talking — initiate something you can do together. Take a walk, watch a movie, shoot some hoops, or bake some cookies. Isn’t it nice to know that your presence really counts? Be patient. As a parent, it hurts to see your child unhappy or stressed. But try to resist the urge to fix every problem. Instead, focus on helping your child, slowly but surely, grow into a good problem-solver — a kid who knows how to roll with life’s ups and downs, put feelings into words, calm down when needed, and bounce back to try again. Parents can’t solve every problem as kids go through life. But by teaching healthy coping strategies, you’ll prepare your kids to manage the stresses that come in the future. Ayude a su hijo a manejar el estrés útbol o la práctica del béisbol, clases de guitarra, recitales de piano, fiestas de cumpleaños, examénes como el FCAT, una carga de tareas, varios proyectos escolares y más ... En el entorno competitivo actual, donde los niños sienten que necesitan sobresalir en tantas cosas, es fácil sentirse abrumado. Aunque el estrés es parte de nuestra vida diaria, los padres no deben sentirse impotentes. Una de las cosas más importantes que pueden hacer es ayudar a su hijo a aprender a manejar el estrés de manera efectiva, de modo que él o ella puede vivir una vida sana y equilibrada - y usted como padre de un niño con tantas actividades, también puede hacerlo. Los niños lidian con el estrés constantemente. Y si bien no puede iniciar una conversación sobre lo que les preocupa, ellos quieren que sus padres les tiendan una mano y les ayuden afrontar sus problemas. Pero no siempre es fácil para un padre saber cómo ayudar a un hijo estresado. He aquí algunas ideas: Comuníquele su interés con claridad. Hable con su hijo cuando usted se dé cuenta de que hay algo que le preocupa. Si es posible, ponga nombre al sentimiento que cree que puede estar experimentando su hijo. (“Tengo la impresión de que todavía sigues enfadado por lo que te pasó en el recreo”). No debería sonar como una acusación (por ejemplo, “Pero, ¿qué pasa contigo? ni tampoco poner a su hijo en un aprieto. Solo se trata de una observación para demostrarle a su hijo que a usted le interesa saber más cosas sobre lo que le preocupa. Escuche a su hijo. Pida a su hijo que le cuente lo que le preocupa. Escuche calmada y atentamente, con interés, paciencia y demostrando lo mucho que le importa. Evite juzgar, culpar, dar sermones o decir lo que usted cree que debería haber hecho su hijo. La idea es permitir que los problemas (y sentimientos) de su hijo sean escuchados. Intente averiguar lo sucedido haciéndole preguntas del tipo de: “¿Y entonces qué pasó?”. Tómese su tiempo. Comunicándose de ese modo, demostrará a su hijo que entiende cómo se siente y por qué, y lo mucho que eso le importa. Sentirse comprendido y escuchado ayudará a su hijo a sentirse apoyado por usted, lo que es especialmente importante en los momentos de estrés. Ponga nombre a lo que le ocurre a su hijo. Muchos niños todavía no tienen palabras para expresar sus sentimientos. Si su hijo parece enfadado o frustrado, utilice esas palabras para ayudarlo a identificar las emociones por su nombre. Expresar los sentimientos con palabras ayuda a los
niños a comunicarse y a adquirir autoconciencia emocional (la capacidad de reconocer los propios estados emocionales). Los niños que son capaces de hacerlo son menos propensos a llegar a ese punto en que las fuertes emociones se expresan mediante reacciones y comportamientos extremos en vez de mediante palabras. Ayude a su hijo a pensar en cosas para llevar a cabo. Si existe un problema específico que le está provocando estrés a su hijo, hablen juntos sobre qué hacer. Anime a su hijo a pensar en ideas al respecto. La participación activa de su hijo le ayudará a construir la confianza en sí mismo. Apoye las buenas ideas de su hijo y aporte ideas complementarias en caso necesario. Escuche y siga adelante. A veces hablar, escuchar y sentirse comprendido es todo lo necesario para ayudar a que las frustraciones de un niño empiecen a aligerarse. Después, intente cambiar el tema de conversación y avancen hacia algo más positivo y relajante. Ayude a su hijo a pensar en algo que le permita sentirse mejor. No dedique al problema más atención de la necesaria. Limite el estrés a que se somete su hijo siempre que sea posible. Si ciertas situaciones están provocando estrés en su hijo, fíjese en si hay formas de cambiar las cosas. Por ejemplo, si un exceso de actividades extraescolares estresa a su hijo a la hora de hacer los deberes escolares, podría ser necesario limitar esas actividades para que pueda dedicar más tiempo y energía a los deberes. Esté presente y disponible. A los niños no siempre les apetece hablar sobre lo que les preocupa. Y muchas veces, está bien que sea así. Deje claro que su hijo sabe que usted estará a su lado cuando tenga ganas de hablar. Aunque a un niño no le apetezca hablar, generalmente no quiere que sus padres lo dejen solo. Puede ayudar a que su hijo se sienta mejor simplemente estando presente: haciéndole compañía, pasando tiempo con él. De modo que, si usted nota que su hijo está abatido, preocupado o molesto, y no tiene ganas de hablar sobre ello, inicie una actividad que puedan hacer los dos juntos. Salgan de paseo, vean una película, jueguen o cocinen. Sea paciente. A todo padre o madre le duele ver a su hijo infeliz o preocupado. Pero intente no dejarse llevar por la necesidad de resolverle todos los problemas. Contrariamente, concéntrese en ayudar a su hijo, sin prisas pero sin pausas, a convertirse en una persona que sabe solucionar sus problemas: un niño que sepa cómo afrontar los altibajos de la vida, expresar sus sentimientos con palabras, calmarse cuando sea necesario y recuperarse para volver a intentarlo de nuevo. Los padres no pueden resolver todos los problemas de sus hijos a lo largo de la vida. Pero enseñándole estrategias de afrontamiento saludables, usted preparará a su hijo para afrontar las tensiones que les deparará el futuro. Miami Dade College held a true advocacy experience at last council meeting in Doral. MDC Adjunct Professor and Co-Chair of DECI, Dr. Eileen Fluney with her EEC 2271 students join firsthand experience of advocating on behalf of the children in the community of Doral, a real experience and they were involved in seeing how Mayor Boria and City Council play a role in making a change. Dr. Fluney along with Co-Chair Daisy Acosta stood in front of the city council presenting an important motion to have approved the month of April as the “Month of the Young Child” in the City of Doral and to have a celebration and awareness throughout the city representing the importance of Early Childhood. The motion was passed and the students of MDC were so proud as they stood with signs of faces of children and the MDC logo saying “I am MDC”.
L is for Letters
Q: How can I help my child practice his letters? A: Life is learning and learning is life. By observing the world around you and engaging your child, he will develop an interest in learning as the connection of Home-School-Community is strengthened. Point out the S on a stop sign, the Y on a Yield sign or the first letter of a favorite family place. Letters are everywhere, the goal is to make your child aware of this and notice similarities and differences which are vital pre reading skills. Your child can create a letter journal of where letters were found as well as hunt for them in a newspaper or magazine. Allow your child to utilize different medium sources to write the letters such as a crayon, pen, or marker instead of only a pencil. To reinforce the concept of a particular letter, sensory stimulation is your best bet. Cook some spaghetti and have your child form an S with the spaghetti. Point out the primary difference in an upper case and lower case is the size of the letter although some also differ in formation. Form S in the sand, make it out of dough, circle them in the newspaper, etc.. Each letter has a name as well as a sound they make. Personalize the letters and they will become more interesting to your child. Be aware of how much your child is able to understand and try to have realistic expectations. Quality is better than quantity. There is no benefit in exposing your child to 15 letters at a time, if at the end, none are learned or recognized. Focus on one at a time and constantly review previous letters as you introduce new ones. Remember that each child is unique and has his own learning speed and style. Recognize your child’s and nurture him without overwhelming him. Most of all…have fun and foster a love for learning in your child!

Y desde el año 2005 $ 8.3 millones han sido otorgados en cámaras de imagen térmica (las cuales permiten a los bomberos poder ver en zonas de calor a través del humo y la oscuridad), herramientas de extracción vehicular, Desfibriladores Externos Automáticos (DEA), instrumentos de estabilización (utilizados para ayudar a los primeros en responder en la estabilización de vehículos volcados); equipo de tanques; radios, los botes de rescate inflables, y equipo médico de urgencia. Recientemente la cadena lanzó en todo el país el nuevo Hearty and Flavorful Menu. Este menú bajo en calorías, presentado por primera vez en la historia de la marca, debutó con seis sándwiches y cuatro ensaladas, todos con menos de 500 calorías cada uno. Firehouse Subs en Doral ofrece pedidos en línea y un menú de catering, que incluye un almuerzo con nombres como “El Teniente “, platos de sándwiches, ensaladas y platos de platos de postre. ¿Llegó el final del libro en papel?

a historia nos muestra que desde el principio de la escritura cuando se tallaba sobre piedra los mandatos universales, comenzó la evolución del conocimiento del hombre. Luego de la piedra, vinieron los papiros y así siguió la evolución de la escritura hasta que se llegó a los libros. Hoy en día estamos asistiendo a la nueva revolución del mundo hacia el formato digital, donde primero se digitalizaron la música y las películas, con la llegada del CD y del video y en el que también se “puso el grito en el cielo” por que se creía que seria el fin de los coleccionistas o amantes de estos géneros.

Desde hace unos años le toco el turno a los libros y para aquellos románticos que disfrutan de leer en papel, con mucho recelo están haciendo la transición hacia la literatura en eBooks. Veamos los datos en números. El año pasado se reportó un aumento del 20% en cuanto a las compras de libros digitales; Se estima que esta cifra subirá el 2015 y llegará al 50% según indicaron varias encuestas y así se ira incrementando el numero de lectores digitales hasta que los números se equiparen entre los compradores de libros en papel y quienes lo hacen en formato digital. Por su parte, las grandes editoriales aún se resisten a publicar su catalogo en formato digital debido a la copia ilegal de los textos que todavía no se encuentran totalmente amparados bajos las leyes de derecho de autor o “copyright”. Pero de mas esta decir que así como avanzó la tecnología en las áreas musicales y de video próximamente leer un libro, una revista o el periódico en una tableta o en los teléfonos móviles será lo mas común del mundo porque ya lo estamos viviendo. No obstante los entendidos en la materia, que están
aportando todos sus conocimientos para generar leyes de protección de autor, no desestiman del todo que el libro en papel deje de existir. Hace unos días, la Universidad de Miami en forma conjunta con el Instituto de estudios Cubanos y Cubano-Americanos (ICCAS) por sus siglas en español, organizaron una presentación con tres panelistas de renombrada trayectoria en el tema, quienes dejaron al descubierto la importancia de abrirnos hacia los nuevos planteamientos tecnológicos que será el futuro de nuestros libros y del conocimiento. Los convocados a esta disertación fueron Juan Manuel Salvat, director de la Editorial Universal quien dejo expreso que “la tecnología avanza de una forma muy acelerada y nosotros tenemos que evolucionar con ella. Es una tendencia mundial de que el papel se esta reduciendo en todos los ámbitos, tantos educativos como de trabajo y el eBook será en los próximos años, una herramienta de estudio casi irremplazable.” Por su parte, Modesto Arocha, director de la Editorial Alexandria coincide con Juan Manuel Salvat y nos comentó que “si bien la industria editorial no se encuentra en uno de sus mejores momentos, uno no puede quedar afuera de los avances tecnológicos. “El hecho de que se expanda cada vez mas el desarrollo tecnológico y se vayan abaratando los costos no nos queda otra solución de incertarnos dentro del cambio y debemos digitalizarnos también para que disfrutemos del placer de leer en formato electrónico ya que lo único que cambia es la forma de adquirir el conocimiento, pero la esencia del libro, lo que guarda un libro y nos aporta, siempre va a estar allí”, comenta Arocha.
Como afecta el eBook a los clubes de lectores?
“Los clubes de lectores no se verán afectados ya que son reuniones sociales, además hay muchos clubes, donde ya comenzó a implementarse leer libros a través de eBook. Las reuniones seguirán existiendo para disertar sobre el libro y el autor escogido.” Por otra parte, hablamos con otra de las panelistas, María Estorino quién es bibliotecaria de la Universidad de Miami y nos comentó sobre la transformación que está sucediendo en las bibliotecas y como están pasan-
do al formato digital. “Principalmente el libro digital será solamente un cambio de formato ya que la información seguirá siendo la misma y la biblioteca, por su parte, seguirá proveyendo acceso a la información, así sea en libros impresos en papel o libros digitales, ya que esa es la principal función de la biblioteca y lo seguirá siendo. La lectura que este ocurriendo en otro formato no representa que las bibliotecas vayan a cerrar. El punto de encuentro para los estudiantes o los lectores seguirá siendo en nuestros edicficios”, concluyó Estorino.
Las encuestas siguen favoreciendo al libro impreso
Según una encuesta publicada a principios de año realizada por el centro de investigaciones PEW indica que los libros digitales han aumentado en el año 2013 pero que los estadounidenses siguen prefiriendo leer libros impresos. El 28% de los adultos encuestados han leído un libro digital, esto representa una suba del 23% en comparación con el año 2012. Sin embargo, siete de cada diez estadounidense dijeron leer un libro impreso. Los investigadores coinciden en que los estadounidenses que leen libros digitales están creciendo, pero pocos han sustituido los libros impresos por las versiones electrónicas. Por otra parte, el 76% de los adultos leyeron un libro mientras que el promedio que se reporta es de 12 libros por año leídos entre libros de papel, audiolibros y libros digitales. Como bien decíamos, estamos en un momento de transición entre el libro de papel y el libro digital, y como ya hemos vivido esto en otras ocasiones nos queda solo esperar y adaptarse al cambio estando abiertos y darle paso a la tecnología para poder disfrutar de sus virtudes. De todas formas un libro electrónico no es otra cosa que la versión digital de un libro en papel y la facilidad que tendremos es que podemos visualizarlo en cualquier dispositivo digital ya sean Ipad, teléfonos móviles, lectores de libros electrónicos o en nuestras computadoras. Si le vemos el lado positivo, tener nuestra biblioteca en formato digital, nos costara muchísimo menos dinero y ahorraremos espacio en el hogar. Ahora que haremos con los libros impresos que acumulamos por décadas y que las bibliotecas ya no reciben como donaciones? Un buen consejo es llevarlos a nuestros países de origen, donde la tecnología va a tardar unos años mas en llegar y en expandirse. Otra sugerencia es, seguir guardándolos como tesoros que formaron parte de nuestras vidas para enseñarles a nuestros descendientes y transmitirles la cultura del aprendizaje a través de nuestras vivencias.

or mas de 20 días, Venezuela entera protesta.Desde hace mas de 20 días, los estudiantes piden a las autoridades que renuncien. Desde hace mas de 20 días, las familias venezolanas se encuentran atrincheradas en sus casas. Desde hace mas de 20 días, la guerra civil esta instaurada allí. Y allí se queda. La resistencia a la injusticia, la impunidad y el clamor de paz en Venezuela no cesa y no cesará. Las Damas de Blanco Venezolanas, es un grupo de mujeres auto-convocadas que ayudan a reflejar y comunicar la guerra civil que hoy vive y padecen los familiares, amigos y el resto de venezolanos sean Chavistas o no. Liderada por Luisana Parra, ciudadana venezolana residente en Miami que, preocupada por la problemática que vive su país desde hace 15 años, le dió las fuerzas suficientes para luchar a la distancia y crear conciencia alrededor del mundo de que en Venezuela no existen poderes Públicos ni Judiciales que protejan al pueblo. “Todos los poderes incluyendo las Fuerzas Armadas están manipuladas por el gobierno”, afirma Luisana Parra. ¿Cómo surge la idea de conformar el grupo Damas de Blanco? Nuestro grupo surge porque conocí a la Señora Dolía Leal (Co-Fundadora de Damas de Blanco de Cuba) y cuando le dije que era venezolana, ella insistió en que hiciéramos un movimiento de mujeres para apoyar a nuestros hermanos venezolanos. Pocos días después se desencadenan estas protestas y mi desesperación, tristeza e impotencia de no poder hacer nada me motivaron e hice una carta a los medios de comunicación para que ayudarán a difundir la verdadera realidad de mi país, Venezuela. “Dicha carta, la entregamos en Univisión el 26 de Febrero, ese día firmaron mas de 40 Damas, para conformar el grupo. Reviewing Your Profits and Losses for the Year

hile Tax Season is a stressful time of year for business owners, it is also a great opportunity. Now is a fantastic time to study your Profit & Loss statement from last year and build a strong financial strategy. Looking over your P&L’s is not only a concrete way to measure your business’ revenues, costs and expenses over a specific period of time, but it provides valuable insight into the ever-important question that separates the sinking businesses from the swimming ones: how your company can generate profit by increasing revenue and cutting costs. In other words, reviewing your P&L’s is essential to keeping your business in tip-top shape. However, P&L’s are not the most straight forward and easy-to- understand documents. Reviewing them can sometimes cause confusion in even the most experienced business owner. Learning to read and use the information in your P&L statement helps to keep your business not only operational but successful. Here are a few things to keep in mind to help make the next time you sit down with your P&L’s more productive. HOW TO ANALYZE YOUR P&L’S Obtain a P&L statement from the past year, quarter or month. In this case the time span matters only in so much as it matters with all assessments: the greater the frequency of the assessment, the greater the opportunity to make revisions and improve. Then review the amounts on the statement. The bottom line (figuratively and literally) explains how much your business gained or lost. Positive numbers indicate profit, negative amounts indicate a loss. Once you have found out whether the organization made a profit or a loss,

take a closer look at the revenues and expenses and how they occurred. Did the company make money through standard operations or does the one- time sale of a fixed asset stand out? Also consider the effect depreciation had on your P&L statement. Depreciation is the reduction in the value of an asset over time, and can result in a loss without necessarily reflecting a payment. Finally, most business owners use the data on their P&L statements to figure out their company’s profit margin ratio. To determine this ratio, simply divide the net income before taxes by the total sales amount. This quotient will tell you the rate of profit your company earned for every sales dollar received. When you compare the ratio from your most recent P&L statement to previous profit margin ratios, you can confidently verify whether the company is moving in the right direction or not. WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO WITH THE NUMBERS? P&L’s operate as a kind of guide post when you are planning your company’s future. As such, many business clients bring us their Financial Reports and ask, “Show me where I can run things better in my business?” Interestingly enough, most of the time my answer is not about accounting, expenses or taxes, but performance. Too often, business owners spend their time on how to save a dollar when spending the Same amount of time and effort on sales and marketing would drastically improve their financial ratios and give them more funds for business development. In the end, know your industry ratios, compare them to your finances and you can start determining the real value hidden in your financial statements!

That is why, as part of National Nutrition Month 2014®, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics encourages everyone to “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right.” Each March, the Academy encourages Americans to return to the basics of healthful eating through National Nutrition Month. This year’s theme focuses on combining taste and nutrition to create healthy meals. “When taste is the most influential factor driving what consumers eat, it is important that we find the balance between choosing the foods we like with those that provide the nutrients we need,” said registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy President Dr. Glenna McCollum. “This year’s ‘Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right’ theme reinforces that the two choices are not mutually exclusive.” The Academy strives to communicate healthful eating messages that emphasize balancing food and beverages within an individual’s energy needs, rather than focusing on any one specific food or meal. To this end, it is the Academy’s position that improving overall health requires a lifelong commitment to healthful lifestyle behaviors, emphasizing sustainable and enjoyable eating practices and daily physical activity. “Enjoying the healthy foods we eat and the physical activities we engage

in is key to developing a healthy lifestyle we can maintain for years to come,” McCollum said. “Every March, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics takes time to strengthen its vision of optimizing the nation’s health through food and nutrition,” McCollum said. “As registered dietitian nutritionists and dietetic technicians, registered, our members have the ability to translate sound science into helpful nutrition information that people can understand and apply to their everyday lives.” Initiated in 1973 as a week-long event, “National Nutrition Week” became a month-long observance in 1980 in response to growing public interest in nutrition. To commemorate the dedication of registered dietitian nutritionists as the leading advocates for advancing the nutritional status of Americans and people around the world, the second Wednesday of each March is celebrated as “Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day.” As part of this public education campaign, the Academy’s National Nutrition Month website includes a variety of helpful tips, games, promotional tools and nutrition education resources, all designed to spread the message of good nutrition based on the “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right” theme. Comunidad se divirtió con una carrera llena de Color Centenares de residentes de la ciudad de Doral acudieron en forma masiva para participar en el “5K Color Run” que se realizó el pasado 1 de Marzo en el JC Bermudez Park. El 5K “Color Run” fue organizado por el PTO de Renaissance Elementary/ Middle Charter School. Desde muy temprano, los inscritos a la gran carrera de colores llegaron y con un ambiente de fiesta prendieron la jornada de recreación. Durante los cinco kilómetros de recorrido, centenares de personas contaron con puntos para actividades, hidratación y baños con polvos que fueron pintando con diversos colores la vía. Cabe destacar, que “The Run Color” fue fundada por Travis Snyder, un productor de eventos, en un esfuerzo por alentar a todo el mundo a correr juntos por diversión… y eso se demostró en este evento, que además del deporte, la jornada sirvió para integrar en un solo espacio a niños, jóvenes y adultos en una colorida y divertida carrera.
Kendall Regional Medical Center again hosted its annual Valentine’s community event for children and their families on Saturday, February 8th. The goal of this annual event is to promote heart healthy living to both children and their families. Children also had the opportunity to bring their teddy bears to get a health check-up at the Teddy Bear Clinic, which was staffed by the hospital’s Women and Children’s Services team. A favorite part of this year’s event was the pretend surgery area, where children were able to dress up as surgeons with personally decorated surgical caps and masks that they made Valentine’s drawings on. This play area was sponsored by the hospital Robotic Surgery Program staff. “We are proud to offer this annual event for the children in the community and their families that we serve as a hospital” said Peter Jude, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for the hospital.

ou’ve probably noticed the unusually cold and stormy weather we’ve been experiencing this year. That makes it more appropriate than ever to recognize National Umbrella Month this March. National Umbrella Month is a time to celebrate a useful invention used by most everyone. It’s no coincidence that the month comes at the beginning of the rainy season. April showers may bring May flowers, but the rain starts pouring in March. When the rain pours, an umbrella has you covered. If you work and pay Social Security taxes, we have you covered too. Whether the storm that hits you unexpectedly is a disability, the loss of a loved one, or an unexpected early retirement (such things can sneak up on you like a sudden storm), Social Security’s umbrella of coverage will keep you protected from the harsh weather. You qualify for Social Security benefits by earning credits when you work in a job or are self-employed and pay Social Security payroll taxes. In 2014, you receive one credit for each $1,200 of earnings, up to the maximum of four credits per year. Most people need 10 years of work (40 credits) to be eligible for retirement benefits. The number of credits you need for disability benefits depends on how old you are when you become disabled. For example, if your disability occurs before age 24, you generally need 1 1/2 years of work (six credits) in the three years before you became disabled. At age 31 or older, you generally need at least 20

Y no es coincidencia que esta celebración marca el comienzo de la temporada de lluvias. Dicen por ahí, que las lluvias de abril traen consigo las flores de mayo, pero la lluvia comienza a descender en marzo. Cuando llueve copiosamente, el paraguas está para protegerle. Si trabaja y paga impuestos de Seguro Social, tenga la seguridad de que diremos “presente” para protegerle tal como un paraguas. Ya sea que la tormenta que se avecine sea una incapacidad, la pérdida de un ser querido o una jubilación temprana y repentina, la cubertura del Seguro Social le mantendrá protegido de las inclemencias de la vida.
