PROGRAMA DE SUBVENCIONES DE LA CIUDAD DE DORAL
Community Based Organization (CBO) Program On February 22nd the City of Doral will begin accepting applications for the new cycle of the Community Based Organization (CBO) grant. The purpose of this grant program is to assist beneficiaries with opportunities to plan, develop and implement sustainable projects that will serve the needs of the Doral community. The maximum amount of request is limited to $5,000 per non-for-profit organization/per fiscal year. All organizations seeking funding must have a 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(6) status and meet all eligibility criteria. The eligible categories include: Community Development, Education, Human/ Human Services, Arts & Culture, Civic Engagement, and Environment. Annual Grant Programs Opening Soon for Businesses and Community Organizations
Façade Improvement Program On April 12th the City of Doral will begin accepting applications for the new cycle of the Doral Façade Improvement Grant Program. The purpose of the program is to provide financial assistance to qualifying parties in Doral to stimulate private sector investment, beautification, economic growth, and job creation in the City, by improving the appearance of the buildings within City boundaries. Possible external improvements include: ADA improvements, landscaping, painting, lighting, canopies, and windows. All grant funding is provided as reimbursement for project costs. The Doral Façade Improvement Grant Program was originally created in 2012 to provide financial assistance to businesses and commercial owners to improve the appearance of buildings within the Doral Décor District. The program originally provided financial assistance by contributing up to 25% of the costs, in an amount not to exceed $ 5,000 per project. The geographic boundaries of the program were expanded in 2017 to include more of the major tile, commercial, industrial and commercial districts of the municipality. In June 2018, the program was revised to cover the entire City of Doral and eligibility was extended to include publicly visible entry features from homeowners’ associations. The maximum grant amount was increased to a 50% reimbursement of eligible renovation costs up to $10,000 per project. El propósito del programa es brindar asistencia financiera a las partes calificadas en Doral para estimular la inversión del sector privado, el embellecimiento, el crecimiento económico y la creación de empleos en la Ciudad, mejorando la apariencia de los edificios dentro de los límites de la Ciudad. Las posibles mejoras externas incluyen: jardinería, pintura, iluminación, marquesinas y ventanas. Todos los fondos de la subvención se proporcionan como reembolso de los costos del proyecto. Este programa se creó originalmente en el 2012 para brindar asistencia financiera a empresas y propietarios comerciales para mejorar la apariencia de los edificios dentro del Distrito de Doral Décor. El corazón, otra víctima del coronavirus POR: DIANA BELLO ARISTIZÁBAL
S
on muchas las cosas que se han dicho sobre el coronavirus desde que comenzó la pandemia. Pero lo que pocos saben y que solo se hizo evidente recientemente, es que el impacto de este virus se está extendiendo, cada vez con más fuerza, al corazón. Por eso, este año el mes de la concientización sobre la salud cardiaca, designado a febrero, ha adquirido un matiz más urgente. El corazón de muchas personas, aún de quienes nunca se han contagiado con el virus, está en mayor riesgo de sufrir algún problema en el marco de esta pandemia. “Antes pensábamos que el coronavirus solo afectaba el sistema respiratorio. Ahora sabemos que el 78 por ciento de los pacientes que son diagnosticados con el virus, presentan alguna afectación cardiaca”, asegura Iván Mendoza, director médico de cardiología del Jackson Memorial Hospital y Jackson South Medical Center.

El doctor Mendoza, por su parte, considera que nadie está exento de desarrollar dificultades cardiacas, aunque asegura que los pacientes con obesidad, enfermedad pulmonar o alguna patología cardiaca preexistente, al igual que las personas monosuprimidas están en un riesgo mayor. Así mismo, también se ha observado que una minoría de los pacientes que desarrollaron anomalías cardiacas en el transcurso de la enfermedad, continúan presentando problemas tiempo después de superarla. “Todavía no sabemos mucho de este virus porque tan solo hace un año se detectó el primer caso localmente, pero lo que sí sabemos es que muchos no han logrado recuperarse”, comenta el Dr. Mendoza. Pero no solamente hay un riesgo para los casos positivos de COVID-19. La prevalencia de problemas cardiacos se está dando también en quienes no han sido diagnosticados con el virus debido al cambio de estilo de vida que ha traído la pandemia.

De acuerdo con el especialista, la mayoría de pacientes con problemas cardiacos derivados del coronavirus son asintomáticos o presentan afectaciones leves. Pese a esto, hay un porcentaje de la población que desarrolla patologías más serias como arritmias, infartos, derrames
Tanto si se adquirió un problema cardiaco como resultado del COVID-19 como si se está en riesgo de padecer uno por el estilo de vida que se ha llevado durante la pandemia, son muchas las cosas que se pueden hacer en complemento al apoyo médico. De acuerdo con el Dr. Stewart, quien es también líder de los programas de cirugía cardiovascular de HCA East Florida’s Miami-Dade facilities, que
incluye, entre otros, a Kendall Regional Medical Center, la pandemia ha agravado los problemas cardiacos porque la gente ha modificado sus hábitos de vida. “Necesitamos estructura social para moderar nuestro comportamiento. Cuando estábamos trabajando en la oficina y queríamos, por ejemplo, fumarnos un cigarrillo, debíamos pedir permiso para hacerlo. Ahora, en cambio, podemos tomarnos todos los descansos que queramos y es por eso que las personas han pasado de fumarse medio paquete al día a dos”, comenta. Este mismo escenario puede aplicarse a las bebidas alcohólicas y los alimentos que están a disposición de las personas las 24 horas del día. “Puedes almorzar con cereal todos los días porque nadie está poniendo atención”, explica el Dr. Stewart. Por otra parte, las cuarentenas así como el cierre de centros de entrenamiento han traído más sedentarismo. “Muchas personas no están haciendo ejercicio afuera porque temen contraer el virus”, añade. Sumado a lo anterior, está el hecho de que las personas están acudiendo menos al médico a sus chequeos rutinarios por miedo a infectarse, por lo cual están dejando de atender enfermedades crónicas como la diabetes o la hipertensión. Así las cosas, cada vez hay más obesidad, deficiencia de vitaminas, niveles de azúcar en sangre altos, presión arterial alta, congestión del hígado y problemas de salud mental, como ansiedad y depresión, en la población. “Toda la comunidad se afecta con la pandemia no solo los enfermos. El aislamiento social, el desempleo y la educación a distancia, entre otros factores, aumentan los niveles de ansiedad, lo cual impacta
directamente el corazón porque hay un aumento de ciertas hormonas como el cortisol”, explica el Dr. Mendoza, también cardiólogo clínico y electrofisiólogo. Para contrarrestar esto, lo primero es modificar la alimentación. Los expertos recomiendan limitar al máximo el consumo de azúcar y la comida procesada y aumentar las proteínas y los vegetales para disminuir la posibilidad de adquirir un síndrome inflamatorio que puede causar enfermedad coronaria y vascular. Por otro lado, es necesario realizar ejercicio al menos cuatro veces a la semana en sesiones de 45 minutos, dormir un mínimo de siete horas cada noche y meditar al menos 15 minutos al día. Otras recomendaciones que se extienden a quienes ya han padecido de coronavirus incluyen medir constantemente la saturación de oxígeno, monitorear la presión arterial y el pulso así como los cambios de peso. “Yo recomiendo a todos los casos positivos del virus, ponerse en contacto con su doctor primario. Puedes pensar que no sufres del corazón y que estás controlado y tener aún así una afectación cardiaca”, asegura el Dr. Mendoza. En caso de que se presente una anomalía cardiaca, se debe continuar con el régimen de medicinas no solo durante el curso de la enfermedad sino, incluso, después, según lo aconseja el Dr. Mendoza. Por último, hay que atender señales de alarma. “Si estás haciendo tu actividad normal y sientes como si tuvieras un elefante sobre tu pecho además de dificultad para respirar, debes ir al médico inmediatamente”, concluye el Dr. Stewart.

any things have been said about the coronavirus since the pandemic began. But what few know and that only recently became clear is that the impact of this virus is spreading, with increasing force, to the heart. So this year, February’s Heart Health Awareness Month has taken a different turn. The heart of many people, even of those who have never been infected with the virus, are now at greater risk of facing a complication during the course of this pandemic. “In the past, we thought that the coronavirus only affected the respiratory system. But now we know that 78 percent of patients who are diagnosed with the virus develop some form of cardiac issue,” says Iván Mendoza, medical director of cardiology at Jackson Memorial Hospital and Jackson South Medical Center. According to the specialist, most patients that endure heart complications as a consequence of the coronavirus are asymptomatic or have only mild symptoms. However, some people develop more serious illnesses such as arrhythmias, heart attacks, pericardial effusions and even sudden death. For Allan Stewart, an expert in minimally invasive heart surgery, even healthy people who get sick with COVID-19 are developing heart problems. “People are leaving the hospital with half of their heart function,” Dr. Stewart warns. About this, Dr. Mendoza also agrees that no one is completely safe from dealing with a heart condition, although he thinks obese patients as well as those who have lung disease, some pre-existing heart problem or that are monosuppressed are at greater risk. In addition, it has been discovered that a minority of patients who developed cardiac abnormalities
during the course of the disease continue to have them long after they overcome it. “We still don’t know much about this virus because only a year ago we found the first case locally, but what we do know is that many people have not been able to recover,” says Dr. Mendoza. But not only COVID-19 positive patients are at risk. Heart problems are also extending more to those who have never been diagnosed with the coronavirus, due to the lifestyle change the pandemic has brought.
THE BEST REMEDY IS A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH
Whether you have a heart problem as a result of COVID-19, are at risk of suffering from one or has one already due to the lifestyle that has been led during the pandemic, there are many things that can be done in addition to the medical support.
Dr. Stewart Headshot According to Dr. Stewart, who is also the head of the cardiovascular surgical programs for HCA East Florida’s Miami-Dade facilities, which includes Kendall Regional Medical Center, among others, the pandemic has exacerbated heart issues because people have modified their lifestyle habits. “We need social structure to moderate our behavior. When we
were going to the office and we wanted to take a cigarette break, we had to ask our supervisor. But now we can take all the breaks we want and that is why people have gone from smoking half a pack a day to two,” explains Dr. Stewart. The same scenario is happening with alcoholic beverages and food, both available to people 24 hours a day. “You can have cereal for lunch every day because no one is paying attention,” adds Dr. Stewart. On the other hand, quarantines as well as the closing of fitness centers have made people to adopt an even more inactive lifestyle than before. “Folks are not working out outside because they fear catching the virus,” he says. In addition, individuals are going less to the doctor for their routine checkups, also thinking they might get sick, which is why they are stopping treating chronic diseases such as diabetes or hypertension. As a result of this dynamic, we are seeing more and more increasing levels of obesity, vitamin deficiency, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, liver congestion, and mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression, in the population. “The entire community is affected by the pandemic, not only those who get sick. Social isolation, unemployment and distance learning, among other factors, increase anxiety levels, which directly impacts the heart because there is more production of certain stress hormones such as cortisol,” explains Dr. Mendoza, also a clinical
cardiologist and electrophysiologist. To start acting against this, the first step is to modify the diet. Experts recommend limiting sugars and processed foods intake as much as possible and increasing proteins and vegetables to reduce the possibility of developing an inflammatory syndrome which can create coronary and vascular disease. It is also suggested to exercise at least four times a week in 45 minutes sessions, sleep a minimum of seven hours each night and meditate at least 15 minutes a day. Other recommendations that extend to those who have already suffered from coronavirus include regularly measuring oxygen saturation, monitoring blood pressure and pulse, as well as weight changes. “I recommend to all COVID-19 positive cases to contact their primary doctor. You may think that your heart is in perfect shape and that your health is controlled when in reality you may have a cardiac problem to address,” says Dr. Mendoza. In the event of been diagnosed with a cardiac complication, the drug regimen should be continued not only during the course of the coronavirus but even afterwards, as advised by Dr. Mendoza. Finally, there are red flags to be heeded. “If you are doing your normal activity and you feel as if you have an elephant on your chest in addition to shortness of breath, you should go to the doctor immediately,” warns Dr. Stewart.

SHELTON ACADEMY PRE K3 -12 Y BRIDGEPREP ACADEMY
Mas opciones educativas para Doral Shelton Academy aumentará su matricula de alumnos en un nuevo campus, mientras que Bridgeprep Academy abrirá su primera sede en Doral POR: EDDA PUJADAS

onsiderando la importancia de seguir ofreciendo más y mejores opciones educativas para nuestra comunidad, la Ciudad de Doral aprobó la instalación de una nueva sede para el PRE K3-12 Shelton Academy y la próxima apertura del K-8 Bridgeprep Academy. Shelton Academy es una escuela privada basada en la religión católica, existente en Doral desde el 2012. Actualmente opera en la 11300 NW 41 Street y planea reubicarse y convertir un almacén de dos pisos en el nuevo campus de la escuela con capacidad entre 450 y 600 estudiantes de los grados K-12 en su primera etapa. Según lo explica Carlos Padula, director estratégico de Shelton Academy, esta institución educativa se apoya en tres pilares fundamentales: la escuela PRE K3-12 para niños católicos (para lo cual está aprobada por la Arquidiócesis de Miami) y no católicos en la que

los alumnos pueden estudiar religión o ética (en caso de que pertenezcan a otra fe que no sea la católica). Esta escuela será completamente bilingüe (inglés y español) y usa el modelo educativo de San Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer que se basa en la excelencia académica, en la formación humana y espiritual. La escuela del Shelton Academy se apoya en un modelo de mentoría, en el que cada niño tiene un mentor que lo ayuda y guía en su formación académica, espiritual y deportiva. El segundo de los pilares es el instituto virtual que ofrece clases online a la comunidad de literatura, estudios bíblicos, teología e historia, entre otros. Algunos de estos talleres son gratuitos y otros a muy bajo costo, ya que la verdadera función del Shelton Academy es ser un centro de transmisión de contenido. El último pilar es la Fundación Shelton Academy que es una organización sin fines de lucro que recoge los fondos necesarios para suplir la diferencia entre lo que pagan los padres y el costo real de la matricula, igualmente, busca becas para familiares que no pueden pagar la escuela y auspicia clases de inglés, formación de adolescentes y religiosa, así como la creación de la orquesta y el coro, entre otras. Hay incluso unos 940 estudiantes de otras escuelas que vienen a la institución en diferentes días de la semana a recibir algunas de
las 30 actividades programadas para las tardes. Es precisamente la Fundación Shelton Academy la que está financiando la remodelación de la nueva sede. La nueva sede, que representa una significativa inversión financiera, está ubicada en la 9455 NW 40 Street Road en Doral y consta de, aproximadamente cuatro acres. Como parte de la remodelación del sitio, el edificio de almacén de dos pisos será renovado con oficinas administrativas, aulas y un espacio recreativo interior en la planta baja y salas de apoyo, laboratorios y aulas en el segundo piso. La escuela propuesta consistirá en, aproximadamente, 180 mil cuadrados, lo que implica una significativa mejoría, pues las instalaciones actuales sólo cuentan con 33 mil pies cuadrados. La inclusión de alumnos en la nueva sede del Shelton Academy se realizará progresivamente en tres etapas. Durante la primera etapa, que se inicia en Agosto de este año, se le dará cabida a 450 alumnos que pueden subir a 600 tras la presentación de un segundo estudio de tráfico exigido por la Ciudad de Doral. En la segunda etapa se esperar llegar a 900 estudiantes y en la última, a completarse en cinco años, se estima llegar a mil 300 alumnos. El nuevo campus ofrecerá varias comodidades que incluyen,
además del área de salones, una piscina de seis carriles, un campo deportivo de césped al aire libre, canchas techadas y al aire libre de basquetbol, gimnasio, cancha de fútbol, una cancha de squash, un teatro y una capilla, entre otras opciones. El estudio de impacto de tráfico, preparado por Langan Engineering & Environmental Services, Inc, ha sido diseñado para reducir los impactos del tráfico, pues va a proporcionar acceso a través de dos conexiones de entrada por la 40 calle. El área de entrega de los alumnos está diseñada con una capacidad para alojar hasta 56 vehículos en cola. Igualmente, se construirán aceras a lo largo de 38 calle, conectando con la red de aceras existente en la 97 Avenida.
BRIDGEPREP ACADEMY – NUEVA ESCUELA CHARTER EN DORAL
BridgePrep Academy es una escuela pública tipo Charter, que abrió su primera sede en el condado de Miami-Dade en el año 2010 y se expandió por todo el área de Miami, abriendo una segunda escuela en el 2011, dos más en el 2012 y su quinto campus en 2014. El modelo BridgePrep luego se mudó a otras áreas de Florida, entre el 2014 y el 2019, para un total de catorce campus, al que ahora se integra Doral. De acuerdo a las condiciones
que Learning World Academy, un preescolar, operaba dentro de estas instalaciones, atendiendo a 160 niños. Como parte de la remodelación del sitio, se renovará el edificio de almacén de tres pisos con oficinas administrativas, aulas y un espacio recreativo interior en la planta baja. La escuela propuesta consistirá de, aproximadamente, 113 mil 892 pies cuadrados de área educativa, 7 mil 664 pies cuadrados de área de juegos interior (gimnasio) y 60 mil 358 pies cuadrados de área de recreación y juegos al aire libre, entre los que destacan cuatro canchas de baloncesto. El ejecutor del proyecto es MG3 Developer Group, LLC que ha desarrollado y construido 38 centros educativos en todo el estado de Florida. El plano del sitio contempla un total del 33,5% de espacio abierto compuesto por espacios abiertos con jardines, incluidas áreas verdes y plantadas. El proyecto también ha incorporado características arquitectónicas adicionales a las esquinas sureste y suroeste del edificio que mejorarán la estética del edificio y cumplen con el

aprobadas por la Ciudad de Doral, el número máximo de alumnos será de mil 650 que se incorporará de la siguiente manera: 650 estudiantes como máximo en el primer año, 975 estudiantes como máximo en el segundo año, mil 200 alumnos como máximo en el tercer año, hasta llegar a mil 650 estudiantes a partir del cuarto año. La escuela tendrá tres turnos iguales, con una hora de diferencia, para la llegada y la salida de la siguiente manera: Turno 1: 7 AM- 2:30 PM; Turno 2: 8 AM - 3:30 PM y Turno 3: 9 AM - 4:30 PM. Estos turnos pueden ser ajustados siempre que mantengan la separación de una hora entre los mismos. Cualquier ajuste debe ser informado a la Ciudad de Doral y al condado de Miami-Dade 30 días antes de la implementación para analizar y prevenir el impacto potencial. BridgePrep Academy estará ubicada en el edificio de tres pisos edificios de la 3500 NW 89 Court, en una parcela de, aproximadamente 6.09 acres, donde estaba ubicado el antiguo sitio de la imprenta del Miami Herald. Es importante mencionar
diseño urbanístico y arquitectónico establecidos en el Código de Desarrollo de Tierras de la Ciudad. Según el estudio de tránsito, preparado por Traftech Engineering, Inc., se proyecta que la escuela propuesta pueda generar, aproximadamente, 3,664 viajes diarios, por lo que se ha diseñado un plan de operaciones de tráfico que aborda las horas de llegada y salida de alumnos para optimizar la circulación dentro de la propiedad y mantener los vehículos que entren y salgan de la escuela fuera de las
calles públicas. Deberá hacerse un nuevo estudio de tráfico y actualizar el plan de operaciones de tráfico al final del segundo año. Tanto la incorporación de la BridgePrep Academy al circuito escolar de Doral como la instalación de una sede con capacidad para más recibir a más alumnos del Shelton Academy forman parte de las mejoras de los servicios educativos para ofrecer más y mejores opciones académicas a nuestra creciente población.

Shelton Academy is a Catholic private school that has been operating in Doral since 2012. They are currently located at 11300 NW 41st street. Shelton has plans to relocate to a two floor warehouse. This new campus will have a capacity of 450 to 600 students in grades PRE K3-12 in their first stage.

According to Carlos Padula, Strategic Director of Shelton Academy, this school is founded in three main pillars: the first one is that it is a PRE K3-12 school for Catholic students (as approved by the Archdioceses of Miami) and for non-Catholic students; these have
the opportunity to choose between studying religion or ethics (in case they profess a different faith from Catholicism). This will be a fully bilingual school (English - Spanish). It is based on the educational model of San Jose Maria Escriva de Balaguer. This model procures academic excellence and the human and spiritual formation. Shelton Academy is supported on a mentorship model: each student has a mentor that helps him and guides him in its academic, spiritual, and athletic formation. The second pillar is the virtual institute that offers online classes to all the community. These classes include literature, biblical studies, theology and history, among others. Some of these courses are free and other have a very low tuition, as the true function of Shelton Academy is to be a center to share content. The third and last pillar is Shelton Academy Foundation, a nonprofit organization that collects the necessary funding to cover the difference between what the parents
pay as tuition and the real cost of it. This Foundation also searches for scholarships for those families that cannot pay the tuition and sponsors English classes, teenage formation classes, religion classes, among others. They are also working on the creation of an orchestra and chorus,
among other activities. There are around 940 students from other schools that come to Shelton Academy on different days of the week, during the evenings, to receive one of 30 programmed activities. Shelton Academy Foundation is also the one that is financing the remodeling of the new campus. This new campus represents an important financial investment, it is located on 9455 NW 40th Street Road, in Doral, its area is approximately four acres. This two-story warehouse will be remodeled to include administrative offices, classrooms, an interior recreational space on the first floor, support rooms, laboratories, and classrooms on the second floor. The proposed schools will consist in about 180,000 square feet, which turns into a huge improvement given that the current facility is only 33,000 square feet. The growth of the student body for the new campus of Shelton Academy will be progressive, in three stages. In its first stage, which will begin in August of this year, there will be 450 students accepted. This number can grow up to 600, if the second traffic study that was presented to the City of Doral is accepted and approved. In the second stage, Shelton expects to grow to up to 900 students, and for the last stage, which is expected to
be completed in five years, they are projecting a total of 1,300 students. The new campus will offer amenities that include, in addition to the classroom area, a six lane pool, an outdoor grassed sports field, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, a gym, a football field, a squash court, a theater, and a chapel, among other options. The impact traffic study was prepared by Langan Engineering & Environmental Services, Inc. It was designed to reduce the impact on traffic by creating an access through two entrance connections from 40th street. The drop off area is designed with a capacity to hold up to 56 cars in line. Sidewalks will also be built along 38th street and connecting with the existing sidewalks along NW 97th Avenue.
BRIDGEPREP ACADEMY – A NEW SCHOOL IN DORAL
BridgePrep Academy is a Charter Public school which opened its first campus in Miami Dade County in 2010. It expanded along Miami Dade, opening a second school in 2011, two more in 2012, and its 5th campus was opened in 2014. The BridgePrep model moved to other areas in Florida between 2014 and 2019 and grew to a total of fourteen campus. The last campus to be opened is now coming to Doral. According to the conditions

approved by the City of Doral, the maximum number of students will be 1,650. This will be increased as follows: a maximum of 650 students for the first year, a maximum of 975 students for the second year, 1,200 students maximum for the third year, and for the fourth year and moving forward, a total of 1,650 students. The school will have three equal schedules, with one hour of difference between each one of them, both for the drop off and pick up. These will be: First schedule: 7am – 2:30pm, Second schedule: 8am to 3:30 pm and Third schedule: 9am to 4:30pm. These schedules can be adjusted as long as they keep one hour of difference among them. In the event of any adjustment, the school must inform the City of Doral and Miami Dade County 30 days before the proposed implementation of the modification, in order for them to analyze and prevent any potential impact. BridgePrep Academy will occupy the three floor building located at 3500 NW 89th Court, in approximately 6.09 acres of land, the former building of The Miami Herald printing operations. It is important to mention that Learning World Academy, a preschool, use to operate in this same building, and it used to service 160 children. The remodeling of this building will include the warehouse, administrative offices, classrooms and an indoor recreational space on the first floor. The proposed school will consist of approximately 113,892 square feet of educational areas, and 7,664 square feet of recreational and outdoor playground areas. Among these areas, we can highlight four basketball courts. The developer of this project is MG3 Developer Group, LLC, a company that has built 38 educational complexes around Florida. The site plan comprises a total of 33% of open spaces with gardens, open spaces including green and landscaped areas. The project has also incorporated additional architectonic characteristics in the southeast and southwest corners of the building. These will improve the aesthetic of the building and also conform with the urban and architectural designs that
have been established by the Land Development Code of the City of Doral. According to the traffic study prepared by Traftech Engineering, Inc, the school could possibly generate around 3,664 daily trips. For this reason, a traffic operations plan has been designed. This covers the hours for drop off and pick up of the students in order to optimize the flow of traffic inside the property and keep the cars from entering and exiting the school into the public streets. At the end of the second year of operation of the school, the administration will have to provide a new traffic study and update the traffic operations plan. Both the incorporation of BridgePrep Academy to the existing educational options in Doral and the new facilities for Shelton Academy are part of the improvement in academic services for our increasing population.

n a new version of “Coffee with the community”, residents, representatives of the Doral Police and City councillors gathered to discuss the problems that surround our city. Among the topics addressed, the main one was the loud noise that car mufflers create when they meet at night to race. “Every night I hear two or three vehicles that seem to be firing shots,” said Maria Claudia Molina Noyes, an investment expert who has lived in Doral for 18 years.

She explains the noise comes from mufflers belonging to cars that from 8:30 at night and until midnight meet between 58 and 74 streets and 114 Avenue to race on the street. “They start earlier on the weekends. I’m very scared”. Carmen Velasquez, a Doral resident since 2000 and owner of a catering company, claimed to have heard the same noise from her residence located on 58th Street and 102nd Avenue. “The noise used to be sporadic but it is becoming more and more prevalent,” she says. The “concert” of car mufflers begins for her after 10 pm and can go on into the early hours of the morning. “This is concerning for me because I have a daughter who leaves work at midnight on the weekends and has to drive back alone. I am afraid that one day she finds herself in the middle of these races,” Carmen says. Marisol Salcedo, a Doral resident since 2015, said she is experiencing a similar situation that conflicts her family. “I think I would be able to tolerate the noise but I have a baby who wakes up with every muffler sound,” says Salcedo, an educational
psychologist who lives on 58th Street and 112th Avenue. In some cases, auto races are held inside properties. “I sent a report to the property manager of my development because a neighbor races his motorcycle while another vehicle follows and films him until they both exit the property and enter 58th Street to continue racing. They drive so recklessly that the cars’s tires leave marks on the street”, says Carmen.
THE BEST TOOLS ARE REPORTING AND EDUCATION
After listening to the complaints presented by the community, the Police spokesman, Rey Valdes, said the Police has conducted several operations, the most recent one on 114th Avenue, to catch these incidents, although he also made it clear that a 24-hour surveillance is not possible. On the other hand, he explained that the greatest obstacle to solve this issue is the lack of clarity in Florida statutes regarding the level of noise allowed for car mufflers. “In the past, the number of maximum decibels allowed for cars was clear. Currently, the law only says that you cannot have mufflers that are too loud, but it does’t specify how many decibels are permitted. This fact makes it challenging to quantify and document that a vehicle is breaking the law,” Rey says. In addition, many of the cars that deliver a noise, considered disruptive to Doral’s residents, are manufactured within the law with these mufflers. “Although the sound is loud for some people, the law allows it because they come directly from the car factory and if that’s the case, our hands are tied. Another scenario would be if they were modified after being purchased,” he explains. In the face of this, attendees concluded that there are two solutions to this problem: create an awareness campaign using different means of communication and get together as citizens to report these incidents through the appropriate mechanisms. “It’s about educating the community. I would like the Council to raise an initiative to encourage people to be a good neighbor, taking the issue of
cars noise as a starting point,” says Marisol. In response, Councilwoman Digna Cabral, together with Councillor Oscar Puig, said that the City is working on a campaign to promote good behavior in the city. “We want to put the 2016 campaign ‘You don’t do that here’ in positive. In addition, I plan to speak with state representatives to request a bill that defines the number of decibels allowed,” she says. But in addition to the educational component, reporting these incidents is always the best tool. “We received a report from someone who was walking his dog and saw one of these cars. As we have an image of the license plate, we are trying to determine where the driver lives to see if we can catch him in the act,” says Valdes. “The important thing is to report on which streets the problem is occurring, at what time and when so that we can make a strategy. This can be done through the City’s 311 online system or with the City of Doral app in the section ‘Report an Issue’. Both are constantly monitored”, explains Digna Cabral. n una nueva versión de “Café con la comunidad”, residentes, representantes de la Policía de Doral y concejales se dieron cita para discutir las problemáticas que aquejan a nuestra ciudad. Entre los temas abordados, el más recurrente fue el ruido que generan los tubos de escape de los vehículos que hacen carreras durante la noche. “Todas las noches escucho dos o tres vehículos que pareciera emitieran disparos”, aseguró Maria Claudia Molina Noyes, experta en inversiones y quien vive en Doral hace 18 años.

Ante las quejas presentadas por la comunidad, el vocero de la Policía, Rey Valdes, aseguró que la Policía ha llevado a cabo varios operativos, recientemente uno en la Avenida 114, para captar estos incidentes, aunque aclara que hacer una vigilancia las 24 horas del día no es posible. Por otra parte, considera que el mayor obstáculo para dar solución a esta problemática es la falta de claridad en los estatutos de la Florida con respecto al nivel de ruido avalado para los tubos de escape. “Antes, se hablaba de un número de decibeles máximo permitido. En la actualidad, la ley solo dice que no se pueden tener tubos de escape que emitan un ruido demasiado alto, pero no se especifica cuántos decibeles están permitidos. Este hecho hace que sea un reto cuantificar y documentar que un vehículo está violando la ley”, afirma. Además, muchos de los automóviles que emiten un sonido molesto para los residentes salen de fábrica con estos tubos de escape. “Aunque el sonido es alto para algunos, la ley lo permite porque salen directamente de la fábrica y ante eso tenemos las manos atadas. Otra cosa sería que fuesen alterados posteriormente”, explica. Así las cosas, los asistentes concluyeron que
hay dos soluciones: generar una campaña de sensibilización utilizando diferentes medios de divulgación y unirnos como ciudadanía para reportar estos incidentes a través de los mecanismos adecuados. “Se trata de educar a la comunidad. Me gustaría que el Consejo elevara una iniciativa para incentivar ser un buen vecino tomando el tema del ruido de los carros como punto de partida”, asegura Marisol. Como respuesta, la Concejala Digna Cabral, en compañía del Concejal Oscar Puig, contó que la Ciudad está trabajando en una campaña para fomentar lo que sí se puede hacer en la ciudad. “Queremos poner en positivo la campaña del 2016 que hablaba de lo que no se hace aquí. Además, pienso comunicarme con representantes estatales para pedir una propuesta de ley en la que se definan los decibeles permitidos”, asegura. Pero además del componente educativo, el reporte de los residentes es el mejor camino. “Recibimos una denuncia de alguien que estaba paseando a su perro y vio uno de estos carros. Como tenemos una fotografía de la placa, estamos tratando de determinar dónde vive el conductor para ver si podemos atraparlo en el acto”, comenta Valdes. “Lo importante es reportar en qué calles está ocurriendo el problema, a qué hora y cuándo para que podamos hacer una estrategia. Esto se hace a través del sistema en línea 311 de la Ciudad de Doral o con la aplicación de City of Doral en el apartado ‘reportar un problema’ que si son monitoreados”, explica Digna Cabral. También se puede llamar a la Policía al número de no emergencia que es el 305-5936699 extension número 7 o al 911 si se trata de una emergencia. “Si envían un reporte por redes sociales, la respuesta puede no ser eficaz porque llega de forma tardía”, advierte Rey Valdes. Local teen activist launches international climate organization
I
n a time of unwanted concern and change, many are looking to find stories of hope and resilience among our community. But where is hope? Is it in feel-good moments that leave as soon as we find them, or is it in our neighbors, who like ourselves, are fighting to improve our future as a community? This group of teenagers is talking about something that we are not: our climate is changing, and we are not doing enough for it. Worse, we are not recognizing the true roots of climate change in our conversations about it. In March of 2020, Nichole Ruiz, a 17 year-old teen from Doral, took the first step. She called her friends from France, Lebanon, and also closer places like Kendall and our city of Doral. Nichole shared her concerns with them, on how she felt that present policymakers were giving empty promises when it came to climate action, and how she was worried about her future in an era of extreme climate crisis if nothing changed. Nichole created The Five Dollar Project, an international, student-led organization focused on creating disruptive initiatives to address climate change. But what does disruptive change mean, and how can we get involved? “Our team creates projects on climate issues we feel that are not talked enough about and do not have appropriate solutions”, Nichole says. “A lot of adults around us claim to be listening to our concerns and assure us that they are trying their best to do better. We know that this is not true, so we decided to take climate action into our own hands.” The Five Dollar Project recognizes that communities are disproportionately affected by climate change because of oppressive systems. This limits people from receiving equitable opportunities to live more sustainable lives. It is because of
this that Nichole and her team build all of their initiatives around the values of diversity and community empowerment. “To me, TFDP is a platform that has people get more involved in climate activism”, says Kendall student and team member Mariam Orabi. Ensuring that all people are able to benefit and grow from The Five Dollar Project’s work. One must recognize the significance of climate change to understand The Five Dollar Project. In recent centuries, society’s shift into industrialization has taken a toll on the natural warming of climate. When humans release exponential amounts of fossil fuels into the
Nichole Ruiz atmosphere, we aggravate the intensity of this warmth, and quicken the rate of climate change. From recent eutrophication issues in Biscayne Bay to a rapid extinction of hundreds of species on a global scale, climate change hurts everyone. Corporations who unethically source and produce their goods are the biggest culprits, and benefactors of climate change. At every level, these polluting industries are subsidized, making it even easier for them to continue worsening our climate. By prioritizing economic growth over living conditions, we have worsened the outcome for
ourselves and are now suffering with the consequences. Motivated by the inequity demonstrated by the immoral practices of large business and policymakers; The Five Dollar Project has counteracted with initiatives of their own. They organized Beach Sweep, a beach cleanup in Miami, raised over $5,300 in COVID-19 relief, organized webinars on underdiscussed climate issues, and spoke as climate representatives at international child rights conferences. “It’s very inspiring to see all the Instagram posts, Zoom webinars, and volunteer work come to fruition at the event itself,” says Miami team member Jonathan Sarasa. Collectively, the team has engaged over 390 members of the community from 5 continents. “I think the best part about our team is that we do not let our present conditions limit us”, Nichole says. “Even though many of our teammates don’t live close to Doral,
we have been incredibly innovative at expanding our impact on a larger audience.” The Five Dollar Project is currently focused on raising seed funding for events, recruiting motivated leaders for their core team and short-term events, and growing their community network. Their next projects? A weekend-long international climate seminar in Arabic and English, and a COVID-19 relief campaign in partnership with Ecuadorian indigenous group Organizacion Tukuykunapak, both designed to educate, empower, and enable people internationally. Leaders in The Five Dollar Project believe that collective climate action that addresses all communities equally is the true answer to our climate crisis. Doral at the forefront of Contemporary Art
I
n times of COVID, innovation and creativity are necessary. In order to safely bring art to the people of our community, The Doral Contemporary Art Museum has recently completed the installation of eighteen monumental sculptures by artist Manolo Valdés in six of the City of Doral Parks. The sculptures are distributed as follows: One sculpture in each of the following parks: Legacy, Doral Glades and Morgan Levy Park. MAU Park has two monumental sculptures and Doral Central Park has four: three of them face 87th Avenue and ‘Alhambra’, an enormous Corten steel head surrounded by latticework, evocative of the Moorish influence on Spanish culture, is located in front of the lake - a resplendent structure that is not to be missed. The remainder of the eighteen are all located in Downtown Doral Park, within easy walking distance of each other, in a glorious amalgam of mediums and styles. Born in Valencia in 1942, Manolo Valdés showed artistic ability from a very early age. He studied at San Carlos Academy of Fine Art in Valencia, Spain. In 1964, he became a founding member of Equipo Crónica, an influential Spanish Pop Art group. The group disbanded in 1981, when his lifetime friend, and fellow collaborator, Rafael Solbes passed away. Since then, he has continued to find success working as a solo artist and has participated in over 70 solo exhibitions. A well-rounded art master that excels in drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture, he is not afraid to experiment with the use of different raw materials. He has produced sculptures in aluminum, bronze, Corten steel, glass, polychromated wood, and marble - to name a few resources. The surprising combinations of raw materials he uses to create his monuments give his large-scale public sculptures an originality and versatility that very few artists are able to obtain. In his creations, he often finds inspiration in well-known art masters, reinterpreting their work, transforming them into new and fresh context, and making them relevant to a modern-day audience. An example of this phenomenon are his meninas, with whom his name is synonymous - a figure that he derived from the grand master of the History of Art, Diego Velazquez. The artist now has a studio in New York, and a second home in Miami. To produce his work, Manolo uses ASU Bronze, a local foundry, for the production of his sculptures. He has graciously agreed to provide his neighbors in the City of Doral the ability to enjoy his monumental effigies at no cost. He has asked the Doral Contemporary Art Museum, a small but prolific
institution in our city to lead the charge in organizing this enormous feat. The Legacy, a name fitting the enormity of the exhibition, can be enjoyed while the parks are open in the City. Mayor JC Bermudez and the City Council will be holding an outdoor festivity to celebrate the enormous success of this exhibition, which has placed Doral in the world stage with many

4 Ways to Make Sure Your Tax Return Doesn’t Get Stuck

ere are four ways to make sure the preparation of your tax return keeps humming along until it gets filed. 1. Keep tax documents in one place. Missing items are one of the biggest reasons filing a tax return gets delayed! Find a place in your home and put all tax documents in this one place as you receive them. Common missing items this year will include the new 1099NEC for any taxpayers that are contractors, consultants, or part of the gig economy. 2. Organize documents by type. Every tax professional has a story of someone bringing their documents to them in a shoebox or storage container. All this does is increase the amount of time it takes to prepare your return, so it’s best to sort your documents in tax return order. Pull out last year’s tax return and create folders for each section including income, business/rental information, adjustments to income, itemized deductions, tax credit information, and a notsure bucket. 3. Create a list of special events. You receive a Form W-2 from your employer every year. You may get a 1099-INT from your bank if you earn interest income on your deposit accounts. But selling a home usually doesn’t happen every year. Retiring from a 40-year job doesn’t happen every year. Sending a child to college also doesn’t happen every year (although it might seem like it does!). If you don’t write down these unusual events as they happen, you might forget them when your tax return is being prepared. And you may not remember until the moment your return is about to be filed. This is sure to cause delays. 4. Don’t forget your signature! You may be surprised to learn that even if you electronically file your tax return, you still must sign Form 8879, which authorizes the e-filing of your return. So, whether it’s a traditionally-filed paper tax return or one filed electronically, a signature is required. These are four of the more common reasons why the preparation of your tax return may get delayed. Be prepared and file your return without a hitch!

Get your Social Security Benefit Statement (Ssa-1099 / Ssa-1042s)

ax season is approaching, and replacing your annual Benefit Statement has never been easier. The Benefit Statement, also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S, is a tax form we mail each year in January to people who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits you received from us in the previous year so you know how much Social Security income to report to the Internal Revenue Service on your tax return. If you live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and get an instant, printable replacement form using your personal my Social Security account at www.ssa.gov/ myaccount. A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-
1042S is available for the previous tax year after February 1. If you don’t have access to a printer, you can save the document to your computer or email it to yourself. If you don’t have a my Social Security account, creating one is very easy to do and usually takes less than 10 minutes. With a personal my Social Security account, you can do much of your business with us online. If you receive benefits or have Medicare, your personal my Social Security account is also the best way to: • Request a replacement Social Security number card (in most states and the District of Columbia). • Get your benefit verification letter.
