Being INFORMED Strengthens Your Vote

lection Day will be held in the United States on November 3, although many U.S. citizens will use the Early vote dates or vote by mail. Before going to vote, you should get informed about the needs and wishes that you have, once you know this, you must research about both parties and their proposals in order to define which if the best option for you, the option that will determine the changes that you search for, for both your community and for the overall situation of our country. Voting is a right! To exercise your vote is an important and necessary step that can make a difference. Voting gives you the opportunity to make yourself heard and to express your opinions, suggestions, and those things with which you do not agree. Voting is one of the most important decisions a citizen has, it is for this reason that you must be aware of the enormous responsibility you have when exercising your vote. Some voters who have already decided who they are going to vote for defend and even fight for their position, but if they are asked a little bit more in depth about the candidates proposals, they often do not know what to respond. This happens because they often get carried away by fanaticism; they believe what they hear on the street or what their friends tell them, they repeat the information without even knowing if the information they are repeating is credible. Today, in the face of a country divided by and confronted with lies, fear, and chaos, it is essential to be informed, to research, to learn, and listen objectively to the proposals of all the candidates who are running in the next elections and to know if the ideas and proposals offered by each party or candidate are appropriate to your expectations for the future, and not just to listen to the candidate that you like the most or that seems more charismatic. This will allow you to analyze postures, discuss your point of view, express your disagreements without fear, and most importantly, consciously choose the person who will represent you and work for you and the country. Consider researching the past of the candidates in their platform and in social media. This will allow you to learn more about their profile, to learn if they have worked with the community, and if they are able to fulfill their proposals. Most media (TV, radio, and both digital and printed newspapers) often publish voter guides and interviews with candidates; there are also organizations dedicated to specific topics on bills that have been introduced in the ballot. These are specific measures that you can approve or reject. If you choose not to vote, other people will decide the election for you, at the risk of those who vote defending their own interests and views, and not necessarily those that you have in mind. Don’t allow apathy and misinformation to be what decides your future. There is nothing more important to a country’s democracy than an informed populace.

Estar INFORMADO, da fuerza al voto!

l próximo 3 de noviembre se llevará a cabo el día de las elecciones en Estados Unidos, aunque muchos ciudadanos estadounidenses votarán anticipadamente o por correo. Antes de ir a votar debe informarse sobre las necesidades y deseos que tiene y de ahí, partir para investigar cuál partido o propuesta es la mejor opción para definir los cambios en su comunidad o para la situación actual del país. El voto es un derecho! Ejercerlo es un paso importante, necesario y que puede marcar una diferencia. Éste le da la oportunidad de hacerse escuchar y expresar sus opiniones, sugerencias e inconformidades. Votar es una de las decisiones más importantes que puede tener un ciudadano, por lo que debe ser consciente de la enorme responsabilidad a la hora de ejercer el sufragio. Algunos de los electores que ya decidieron por quién votar, defienden y hasta pelean por su posición, pero si les preguntan un poco más sobre las propuestas de los candidatos de su preferencia, no saben qué decir. Y es que muchas veces, se dejan llevar por el fanatismo, lo que escuchan en la calle o lo que cuentan sus amigos… repiten la información sin profundizar sobre ella ni saber si la fuente es creíble. Hoy en día, ante un país dividido y confrontado ante mentiras, miedos y caos, es fundamental informarse, investigar, conocer y escuchar objetivamente las propuestas de todos los candidatos que se han postulado para contender en las próximas elecciones y, para saber si las ideas y propuestas que ofrece cada partido o candidato, se adecúan más a las expectativas que usted tiene para su futuro… y no oir solamente al candidato que le cae bien o parece simpático. Esto le permitirá analizar las posturas, debatir su punto de vista, expresar sus desacuerdos sin miedo y, lo más importante, elegir a conciencia a la persona que le representará y trabajará para usted y por el país. Considere investigar el pasado de los candidatos en su plataforma y en sus redes sociales… Así conocerá más de su perfil, si ha trabajado en activismo comunitario y ver si puede cumplir sus propuestas. La mayoría de los medios informativos (TV, radio y periódicos tanto digitales como impresos) suelen publicar guías para electores y entrevistas a los candidatos, al igual que organizaciones dedicadas a temas específicos sobre propuestas de ley incluidas en la boleta electoral. Estas son medidas específicas que usted puede aprobar o rechazar. Si usted decide no votar, otras personas decidirán por usted, con el riesgo de que quienes votan defiendan sus propios intereses y puntos de vista, y no necesariamente los que usted tenga en mente. No deje que la apatía y la desinformación sea la que decida su futuro. No hay nada más importante para la democracia de un país que una ciudadanía informada.

Rafael Pineyro challenges incumbent Claudia Mariaca

Meet the candidates for City of Doral SEAT 1 BY: MARÍA ALEJANDRA PULGAR

n this final installment of our “Meet the Candidates for Doral Council” series, Claudia Mariaca (incumbent Councilwoman) and Rafael Pineyro discussed with us their experience, knowledge of local government and ideas for the future of the City of Doral as candidates for Seat 1 in the Council.

Informed citizens make adequate decisions that will certainly affect the direct future for the City. On this election cycle, due to the circumstances of the pandemic, local campaigns have lacked of the more personal component of home visits, which allows for candidates to closely interact with their constituents.

CLAUDIA MARIACA (Incumbent Councilwoman Seat 1)

ncumbent Councilwoman Claudia Mariaca has lived in Doral for 15 years, with her husband and two children. She won her position in the Council with more than 56% of the votes on a runoff election, in December 2016. This time around, she is the only woman running for local office. Her active community involvement with community organizations, her leadership, knowledge and participation as representative for residents in front of the Council, discussing issues related to education and quality of life, her professional qualifications and her personal values, resonated with the residents who supported her to achieve the Councilwoman position, where she has served for four years with pride and dedication.

THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

“I have the type of personality that gets involved but with respect. It all began years before I even considered running for office, it began with participation. We see too many candidates that show up only during the election cycle and they have done nothing to inform themselves and get educated on the process of what it takes to actually be seated on a Council seat. “I started going to council meetings, voicing my concerns. I started talking to more and more residents that also had the same concerns that I did […] there were so many others who felt the same way but not everybody is willing to put themselves

in this position. “It is a tough position. To me it is a serious position. When you are running for office you are applying for a job, […] this is not something you do for money; you do this out of passion and commitment to your city. “And that is what I have always had, and I am lucky enough that is what I get to dedicate my time to and I have a very supportive background with my family that allows me to do that. […] I believe that we can all make a better future and have a better quality of life if we work together as a community and the only way to achieve that is for each of us put our little grain of sand; I am putting my grain of sand by doing this on a daily basis. I am happy and I am proud of it.”

EXPERIENCE IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT

“I am actually proud of being the only female candidate on the City of

Doral ballot. […] the most important thing is that no matter what your gender is and no matter where you come from, we can all make a difference, and you are in a country and in a City that allows you to do that. We can all participate in our own level and this is what I want to do and I think I have been doing really well the past four years and hope the voters agree. “ Claudia Mariaca holds a Bachelor degree in Economics and Finance and is fluent in English, Spanish and Portuguese, which has allowed her to communicate and understand the needs of a broad portion Doral residents and business owners during her time in office. She has strong ties with parents and educators in the city, for her longtime involvement with PTSA’s at local public schools and her participation as member on different committees at the School Board. She served as Vice Mayor in 2018 and as board member on

monies are applied in the right areas and we have a healthy reserve to deal with situations like this. “As infrastructure, we’ve added parks; we passed a park bond that is going to lead us into the future of the ten year plan in terms of green space, so I believe we are moving in the right direction as well. We have added a few more street openings and we continue to look for other options to ease the traffic issue that has always been a problem in Doral.

MAIN ISSUES TO FOCUS THE NEXT FOUR YEARS

“There is still a lot to do! Doral is one of the fastest growing cities in Florida, […]. We have to make sure the budget continues in the right direction and the tax dollars are being applied correctly. I want to make sure that the bond continues to be applied and overseen by a committee, to make sure all those projects are handed to the community on time and on budget if not under budget hopefully.

“There is still more work to do in making sure we improve the quality of life; that we find options for public transportation. […] There is a lot that needs to be improved with Miami-Dade County; I want to make sure that we work closely with them, that we are allowed to do a little more work independently, so projects do not take so long for the City of Doral to do. “I believe there is still a lot that we can do in promoting HOA reform in Tallahassee, that is something we have really pushed in the past 2 years and there is still work that needs to be done there, […] we need to make sure we have representation that will take this to Tallahassee and continue to remind them we need reform. Obviously there is always going to be work here. It is something I am passionate about and I hope I can continue doing it for another four years.”

The main focus of her tenure as Councilwoman has been on supporting the City operation with efficiency, transparency and financial responsibility, and championing projects and legislation to improve traffic safety, education and living conditions in the city; enhancing youth development and expanding cultural programs. “The ability to have a good financial structure is something we are seeing 100% with the COVID issue. […] that is what reserves are for. They are for an emergency. People ask, what Emergency? And living in Florida we think about hurricanes, but we are dealing with an emergency right now that is definitely longer than a hurricane and it is something that affects every single person that lives or works in the City of Doral. I believe we have done a really good job with our budget, in making sure our

“When you decide to live in a community it is because that community really represents who you are and what you want to be in the future, […] when

we speak about my vision, what would be my goals as your next councilmember, number one we really need to bring the community together, especially during these hard times, because we are in the middle of a crisis. “We need to provide a direct assistance to our small business owners and our residents as well, […]. We count on the resources and all the tools to provide assistance to our business owners and residents. We have a program that we are still working on that is called “Doral after the Pandemic” that will provide short term and long term solutions directly to our small business owners and to our residents “Two, for me something that is very important is going back to the basics to the community. We need to provide educational, cultural and recreational activities to our residents, not only our children but our senior citizens. That is what really matters in a community, what really makes a real

difference in everybody’s life. […] I think it is about time the City provides an after school program as a City, not with a private vendor. […] There are families with more than one child that cannot afford the fees now. We would do partnerships where we can work on providing scholarships for that program with that provider.[…] But when I speak about new programs, […] if we have the facilities and staff and resources why do not start implementing those programs for the residents as a municipality? “Number three one of the main goals is to expedite, reform, review our permitting and licensing process. It has been a problem I believe for the all the years since we have been incorporated. When I worked in the city, it was a complain, and after I left it was the same complain heard in the streets. If we do not take a look at what other municipalities have done in order to expedite the process for any type of business in the city to open, I think we are going to actually create more barriers and people are going to start looking at other cities to open instead of Doral.

afael Pineyro has been training to work in Public Service since college. He holds a BA in Public Administration and a Master in Psychology. He worked for Miami-Dade County Parks and Recreations Department, the Williamson County Court System and in May 2015 was hired as Chief of Staff for the City of Doral, a position where he worked for Mayor Boria and later for Mayor Bermudez. In 2017, Pineyro resigned the position to run for office as established in the Doral Charter. Initially he registered as candidate for Doral’s Seat 4, but later withdrew that candidacy to challenge José “Pepe” Diaz on his reelection campaign for Miami-Dade County Commissioner. This time around, Pineyro decided to run for Councilman on Seat 1, with a platform that looks forward to “Develop new ideas to make Doral a city of progress and opportunity”. He looks forward to being a voice for positive change in the community and to “create and build partnerships for the future”. Pineyro lives in Doral with his wife and his young son. He is very close to his broad family, especially his grandparents, who also live in Doral and inspire him to promote, if elected, the enhancement of programs for seniors in the community.

“WE NEED A MORE PRACTICAL APPROACH”

“When I ran as County Commissioner I believed back then and I still believe, we need to take a more practical approach towards our local issues. At that position I was looking to create a bigger impact in how to better and quicker serve our residents in Miami Dade County, including Doral which is part of the district. “Why run for Council: Because I am going back to my basics, to my community. Why as a councilmember instead of Mayor? At some point I was considering doing it […] I worked as Chief of Staff for the previous Mayor and for the current Mayor. I believe in politics you have to be all the time thankful and humble about your decisions. I wouldn’t go against the person that I worked with, we might have different political views about how to do things but as an individual, the way I have

been raised and my family values, as an individual I wouldn’t do it. “On the Council seat, […] I would be that voice on the dais that speaks up what residents are complaining about and how we can make productive changes now and looking into the future. […] I will be an independent voice to say what we need to change or review or to keep looking into the future. “There is nothing wrong on recognizing issues or problems and I believe that is something that we are missing from the current City Council. […] we need to recognize that we have problems and we need to fix those problems.

THE FUTURE OF DORAL

“I would love to see a city where technology plays a factor, where we have a mobility, transportation, connectivity plan in place, […] where we offer a reliable, modern technologically transportation

system, connected with the county’s […] we need to go with a vision that can connect all main streets in our city with the Miami-Dade County transportation system. “In ten years I would like to see our Convention Center infrastructure in the City, more green spaces taken into consideration in our future projects. I do not want to see more mix of industrial and residential or new developments. […] I envision a city still safe for our children, with one of the best school systems that we can have, […] a city that becomes attractive to new industries, where our next generations can stay, work and study here, instead of going to other cities because they cannot afford to be here. “I envision that this becomes a city where everything is connected, where unity places a factor. I believe we are missing that component of unity as residents.

The Opportunity for young people to decide their future BY: EDDA PUJADAS

Apathy,” “Indifference,” and “Lack of interest,” are words that we have often used to describe the behavior of young people about politics. Nevertheless, several public surveys are now showing that the reality might be different. Opinion polls conducted among people between the age of 18 and 26 show that the vast majority of them would not only vote in the upcoming elections to be held in November of this year, elections both national and local, but that they see them as a right and an opportunity to decide on their future. In general, young people are concerned about the amount of debts they have or can have due to education, the available economic opportunities for their generation, affordable health services, social and racial equality, the increase in inventory of affordable housing, and those of Latino or Hispanic origin are also concerned about immigration issues, despite the fact that most of them already have a legal immigration status in this country. Some experts argue that young Americans could make the difference in the November election, helping determine the outcome of the Presidential election between Republican President Donald Trump and his Democratic contender, Joe Biden, as well as the political control of Congress, and more. Recently, Telemundo and BuzzFeed News conducted a countrywide survey among young people about the electoral process in the United States to find out what their voting intentions and preferences were. The study found that the main motivation for young people to vote was equality for all with a 76% preference. Young people’s interest in achieving equality for all is evident not only in their intention of vote, but also in their participation in social movements. 56% of these young

people stated that they are involved in activities in favor or racial equality, 38% in the defense of immigration rights and 29% in the fight for the LGBT community. Evidence that the apathy young people showed or have shown before has been left behind is that 69% of them reported that they pay attention to the news. They are interested in knowing how things affect their daily lives and their future. 62% reported that they follow the news through social media and 48% through television. According to this survey, 7 out of every 10 respondents are concerned about making college education free, 8 out of every 10 are concerned with legalizing marijuana for medicinal use, and 6 out of every 10 making recreational marijuana legal. The survey also showed that a controversial issue such as abortion has very different views, 49% of those surveyed considered that it should be legalized while 40% see it as murder. 82% of respondents indicated that the Black Lives Matter movement and its protests influenced their intention to vote, while 71% said they are being motivated by the coronavirus pandemic. These results show the interest of young people for social and racial equality and our health system. As for their position on the debate on vaccines and COVID-19, the pandemic ranks high in the tendencies of young people, 8 out of every 10 of those surveyed expressed their concern for this worldwide virus. Among this group, 83% stated that they have been affected by this disease, and 48% lost their job or they can’t pay their rents.

They all responded that they will vote and that they are concerned, and the same is happening in the rest of the country, about social, educational and health issues. Their main motivation to participate in this election process is the opportunity to decide their future. Glenda Ibañez says she will be voting in all the upcoming elections. Her main motivation is so she can provide her opinion on the changes that affect her community. She believes that it is important to improve public transportation, recycling programs, and to increase the availability of affordable housing. “I like to think that my vote can be that decisive vote.” Henry Diaz, who is Venezuelan by birth, also indicated that he will vote in the next election. “I wasn’t born here but the United States opened the doors to me and my family so I want to take the opportunity to decide on the people that will be in Office because that will define our future.” Yennylind Ortega Sardi defined the vote as a right that all citizens have to choose what we want for the country in which we live. “For me, it is an obligation and an opportunity to be able to have an opinion. We have to be part of the process, do something in case we want a change, it’s our grain of sand.” Valeria Delgado believes that not voting in elections is giving up your right to be heard. “If we have the power to make decisions about the quality of life we want for ourselves and future generations, we need to take advantage of it. In addition, voting gives us an opportunity for change to have a positive impact on the community.” Alexander Parra sees elections as a citizen’s duty. “I think we should study about each candidate, learn about

opinion or criticize in the future?” Jay Khalil is another young man who supports the electoral process, and for him the main motivation is that it is important that things change. “What drives me to vote is the obvious need for change, possibly a new head in Office would help improve America.” Ricardo Guercione believes that not voting is the same as leaving his future and decisions in the hands of others. “What would motivate me the most to vote is not to miss the opportunity to decide, besides that to me the vote as a right, but also a duty. With regards to my biggest concerns right now I think it’s health, we need to find ways to raise community awareness of the importance of following the CDC’s (Center for Disease Control and

Prevention) recommendations.” Gerardinna Piccone sees the elections directly linked to her own future. “Of course I would vote, because the people who take control of the country, states or cities are the ones who make the decisions that affect us directly and therefore our future. I believe, for example, that the health crisis that we are experiencing today, with COVID-19 shows that there are issues such as the health system that definitely need to be improved.” A young vote, evidently active and concerned about their fate, tells us that the upcoming elections could put aside partisan leanings or preferences and rely more on what people really want for their future.

LA OPORTUNIDAD DE LOS JOVENES PARA DECIDIR SU FUTURO POR: EDDA PUJADAS

Apatía”, “Indiferencia”, “Desinterés”, son palabras que en muchas ocasiones hemos utilizado para calificar la forma de comportarse de los jóvenes frente a la política, sin embargo, varias encuestas de opinión pública demuestran que la realidad es otra. Sondeos de opinión realizados entre jóvenes entre 18 y 26 años demuestran que la gran mayoría de ellos no solamente votaría en las próximas elecciones, nacionales y locales a realizarse en noviembre de este año, sino que las ven como un derecho ciudadano y una oportunidad para decidir sobre su futuro. En líneas generales, a los jóvenes les preocupa las deudas por la educación, las oportunidades económicas para su generación, servicios de salud accesibles, la igualdad social y racial, el incremento del inventario de viviendas asequibles, y a quienes son de origen latino o hispano, les sigue preocupando el tema migratorio, a pesar de tener ya un estatus legal en este país. Algunos expertos sostienen que los jóvenes estadounidenses podrían hacer una diferencia en las elecciones de noviembre, ayudando a determinar el resultado de una contienda entre el presidente republicano, Donald Trump, y su contendiente demócrata, Joe Biden, así como el control político del Congreso, y más. Recientemente, la cadena Telemundo y BuzzFeed News, realizó una encuesta en todo el país entre los jóvenes y el proceso electoral en Estados Unidos para saber cuáles eran sus intenciones y preferencias con respecto al voto. El estudio determinó que la principal motivación para votar de los jóvenes era, en un 76%, la igualdad para todos. La evidencia de que, la apatía de la que se les acusaba antes a los más jóvenes ha quedado atrás, es que un 69% de ellos manifiesta estar pendiente de las noticias y de cómo éstas pueden afectar su vida diaria y su futuro. Un 62% lo hace a través de las redes sociales y un 48% por la televisión. Según esta encuesta a 7 de cada 10 encuestados le preocupa lograr que la educación universitaria sea gratuita, a 8 de cada 10 la legalización de la marihuana para uso medicinal y a 6 de cada 10 la legación de la marihuana para uso recreacional. Llamó la atención que un tema tan controversial como el aborto tuviese opiniones divididas pues si bien un 49% considera que debería legalizarse, el 40% lo ve como un asesinato. El 82% de los encuestados indicó que las protestas ‘’Black Lives Matter’’ influyeron en su intención de votar, mientras que el 71% aseguró que lo hará motivado por la pandemia del coronavirus, resultados que ponen de manifiesto el interés de los jóvenes por la igualdad social y racial y el sistema de salud. En cuanto a la posición de los jóvenes sobre el debate de las vacunas y el COVID-19, la pandemia ocupa un puesto importante entre las tendencias de los jóvenes, pues 8 de cada 10 encuestados manifestó su preocupación por este virus mundial. Dentro de este grupo, el 83% dijo haberse sido afectado por la enfermedad, mientras que 48% perdieron el trabajo o no pueden pagar renta.

“MI DERECHO A OPINAR”

Doral Family Journal entrevistó a varios jóvenes de nuestra comunidad para saber si votarían en las próximas elecciones. Todos ellos respondieron que si y si bien, al igual que sucede en el resto del país, les preocupan temas sociales, educativos y de salud, su principal motivación

para participar en un proceso electoral es la oportunidad para decidir sobre su futuro. Glenda Ibañez asegura que votaría en todas las elecciones, siendo su principal motivación que puede opinar sobre cómo cambia y evoluciona su comunidad, en la que cree importante mejorar el transporte público, los sistemas de reciclaje y aumentar la cantidad de viviendas asequibles. “Me gusta pensar que mi voto podría ser ese 1 voto decisivo”. Henry Díaz, quien es venezolano de nacimiento, también indico que si votaría en las próximas elecciones. “No nací aquí, pero Estados Unidos nos abrió las puertas a mi y a mi familia por lo que quiero aprovechar la oportunidad de decidir quienes serán las personas que ocupen los cargos gubernamentales ya que estoy seguro que eso definirá nuestro futuro”. Yennylind Ortega Sardi definió el voto como un derecho que tenemos todos los ciudadanos para elegir lo que queremos para el país en el que hacemos vida. “Para mi, es una obligación y una oportunidad para poder opinar. City Launches DORAL CARES Grant Programs for Businesses and Residents

ayor Juan Carlos Bermudez and City Council have approved Doral CARES grant programs to small businesses who have been economically impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and residents who can demonstrate a pressing financial need due to the pandemic. Beginning on October 1st at 8:00 a.m., the City will begin accepting applications online for two separate grant programs: the Doral CARES Emergency Rental Assistance Program and Doral CARES Business Recovery Assistance Grant. Funding for these assistance programs is made possible through funding allocated from federal Coronavirus, Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) monies provided through Miami- Dade County. “These programs will provide much needed relief to our community during this difficult time, “said Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez. “It’s our priority that these funds reach our small businesses and residents that have been most affected, aiding in the recovery of our City.” The Doral CARES Small Business Assistance Grant provides eligible businesses with a one-time assistance grant of up to $10,000.00 for allowable specified COVID-19 relief. The reimbursement grant program is intended to help small businesses with 3 to 25 employees and not a part of a national chain or franchise to recoup COVID-related operational expenses incurred between March 12, 2020 and September 30, 2020, including rent, employee salaries, inventory, insurance, communications, technological upgrades, training, cleaning, and COVID prevention supplies related to the pandemic. Grants will be considered on a first-come first-served basis and will be awarded to eligible businesses until funds are expended. The amount of the grant will be based on the expenses submitted, and the amount of funding available. The Doral CARES Emergency Rental Assistance Program provides a onetime assistance grant of up to $2,500.00 to help residents cover unpaid rental payments. For qualifying residents, rental assistance will be based on one month’s rent up to the maximum grant amount. Grant funds will be disbursed first come, first served directly to landlords until funds are exhausted. Funds will be paid directly to approved landlords in the form of a grant which must be used solely to provide rent forgiveness in the same amount to eligible tenants. - Supuestamente sería para muchos el año perfecto, pues usualmente, 20-20 se refiere a cuando una persona tiene la vista ocular de manera excelente. Sin embargo, la economía en el 2020; nos ha demostrado que con una simple pandemia, mal administrada y mal controlada, como sucede en cualquier negocio o empresa, resulta en un caos tremendo; Es justamente lo que ha acontecido prácticamente desde marzo de este año imperfecto ocular a toda persona o negocio, inclusive a nivel del mundo entero.

De tal manera que el ser humano debe sobrevivir, la pregunta clave es ¿Cómo? Apenas tomó unos meses para que los empresarios, los individuos, e inclusive los gobernantes observaran la catástrofe en cuanto a pérdidas económicas y sobre todo, la gran pérdida de vidas humanas, para que les entrara en la médula ósea de algunos de ellos, pues otros, y la gran mayoría de ellos, más bien se tornaron a prácticamente a no escuchar y; como lo dijo el gran escritor, Edgar Allan Poe – volverse “ostras mentales” e ignorar la manera correcta de enfrentar tal caos en pleno desarrollo y exponencialmente destruyéndonos. Entonces, ¿Qué hacer?, ¿Cómo lo hago?, ¿Cómo logro superar tal situación adversa?; No todo está perdido, pues de todo factor negativo, se debe sacar algo positivo, tal como lo explicó Jairo Martins da Silva de T&S Academy en Sao Paulo, Brasil – “El virus nos ha brindado como despertar y tener una conciencia mas colectiva y solidaria”. Efectivamente, muy acertado ese comentario… pues la verdad es esa; Tuvo que venir una pandemia de esta magnitud para que el ser humano se volviera más solidario para con su prójimo más cercano, y para que las naciones otorgaran ayudas financieras a los individuos y empresas; Pero siempre salen personajes, empresarios y gobernantes que no han pasado ni tres segundos de comunicar un alivio, ya sea de producto comestible, financiero, o de manera habitacional, del cual, o toman control para su beneficio propio, o actúan de una manera descomunal para dejar a los más necesitados en una peor situación de la que estaban. Por lo que, el primer consejo para salir adelante es tomar conciencia de que, hay que tener PACIENCIA:

Parece mentira, pero si se escuchara bien a los científicos, a los expertos en economía y sobre todo, si los mismos gobernantes escucharan, y tuvieran una buena comunicación con ellos y vice-versa, la situación sería más favorable de lo que tenemos en este momento, sobre todo en esta gran nación. Ya sea como empresario, directivo o individuo, debemos aprender a tener paciencia; Pues en latín hay un dicho que dice; “piano, piano, vai lontano” (despacio, despacio y llegarás lejos). Entiendo que es más fácil escribirlo y leerlo, que de verdad practicarlo; pero traten de practicarlo, pues esto les dará una mente más clara y oportuna para que después de meditarlo tranquilamente; el panorama cerebral será un porcentaje más favorable. El segundo consejo es volverse FLEXIBLE (RESILIENTE); Sí! Afrontar la crisis que tenemos enfrente con mente abierta… flexible al cambio. La pandemia nos ha ocasionado un cambio completamente brusco y nos hemos encontrado con un panorama de incertidumbre; El volverse flexible permite que transformemos de una manera estable nuestros sistemas, organizaciones y sobre todo, el factor humano. Ahora bien, hay que tener bien claro que de ahora en adelante, todos, absolutamente todos y todas las organizaciones e industrias viviremos un “nuevo” normal, ya que el COVID-19 nos ha hecho un llamado de alarma a todos los seres humanos, y lo cierto es que es hora de construir las infraestructuras que nos permitan vivir de una manera distinta. El tercer consejo es REORGANIZARSE: Quienes están saliendo adelante han desaprendido para aprender nuevamente y han tenido bien claro que la sociedad se debe sostener por la base de participación de responsabilidad humana y no pensar en la responsabilidad de recursos monetarios. Pareciera que el COVID-19 tiene a toda la población nacional y mundial “contra las cuerdas”, como un buen deportista practicante del boxeo; Todas las industrias forzadas a representarse con números negativos, la desconfianza en los gobernantes por la falta de ponerse de acuerdo en una decisión de ayuda al contribuyente, y no una decisión de partido… Practicar los consejos anteriormente descritos y sobre todo, pensar y hacer una cohesión humana

verdadera en equipo, hará que la pelea, la ganemos nosotros!! A continuación les presento unas prácticas saludables a nivel personal: 1. Actuar con respeto, coherencia y disciplina enviando señales consistentes. 2. Acercar los líderes a los colaboradores, promoviendo la comunicación presencial y la manifestación de resistencias. 3. Potenciar la responsabilidad compartida y la participación a nivel organizacional, empresarial, gubernamental e individual. 4. Crear equipos para monitorear cuidadosamente las señales del entorno. 5. Mientras se pueda, y se tenga el recurso humano interno o externo, promover el trabajo en equipo. En cuanto a nivel financiero, algunas prácticas saludables son: 1. Aplicar una gestión estructurada para eliminar todos los gastos innecesarios. 2. Vigilar y estructurar mejor la generación de caja. 3. Eliminar o aplazar inversiones en proyectos con retorno no fiable o negativo. 4. Comprender y desarrollar estrategias, o simulaciones con el negocio en tiempos de fatalidad económica. 5. Renegociar las cuentas por pagar y por cobrar (por ejemplo: descuentos por pronto pago). En cuanto al ámbito de aliados o alianzas estratégicas: 1. Validar la situación actual de cada proveedor a nivel de inventarios, pagos y compromisos. 2. Revisar y definir un plan de pagos cumplible. 3. Fortalecer las alianzas para superar la crisis. 4. Compartir fortalezas a nivelde gestiones y apoyo comercial. 5. Establecer planes de mejora integrando escenarios de crisis y post-crisis. Todo esto nos llevará a la construcción oportuna de habilidades para el aprendizaje y la transformación a todos los niveles, lo que nos dará una visión distinta del futuro, por lo que al final de todo, obtendremos una validación total de nuestro entorno y buscar nuevamente, continuar positivamente en un nuevo mundo normal.

i entre sus metas cercanas está la compra de una casa, una de las primeras decisiones que debe tomar es la selección de un prestamista hipotecario que lo ayude a gestionar el tipo de financiamiento que mejor se ajuste a sus características crediticias. No se trata solamente de decidir a quién le pediremos el dinero prestado, sino también al prestamista que se encargará de gestionar exitosamente nuestro crédito y de obtener la mejor tasa de interés posible. Si bien en Internet hay miles de opciones de préstamos disponibles a las que podemos aplicar con tan sólo hacer “click”, los prestamistas y empresas dedicadas al financiamiento pueden prestarle una atención más personalizada. El primer consejo para escoger un buen prestamista es preguntarle a familiares y conocidos que hayan obtenido recientemente una hipoteca. Consúltelo, igualmente, con su agente de Real Estate, pues debe tener experiencia trabajando con, al menos, dos o tres financistas que le puedan recomendar. De acuerdo a la Asociación de Realtors de la Florida, los términos, tasas y productos de los préstamos pueden variar significativamente de una compañía a otra, por lo que recomiendan una serie de preguntas básicas que pueden servir de guía para escoger a su prestamista, entre las cuales no puede faltar la forma en que trabajan en la era del COVID-19. La Asociación de Realtors de la Florida, indica que es importarte preguntarle a un prestamista

cuáles son las hipotecas más populares que ofrece y por qué son las más populares. Con respecto a sus servicios, pregúntele si son negociables sus tarifas, términos, tarifas y costos de cierre. También asegúrese de saber si ofrecen descuentos para inspecciones, por tipo de propiedad de vivienda o configuración de pago automático. Pregunte si tendrá que comprar un seguro hipotecario privado y si es así, trate de obtener costos aproximados de este seguro. Si el prestamista trabaja en conjunto con una compañía de título, pregunte las instrucciones para hacer los depósitos de garantía (Escrow Deposit, por su denominación en inglés), si hacen cierres de forma remota y cómo realizan el proceso de cierre, tomando en cuenta las normas del distanciamiento social. Debe hacer preguntas específicas sobre préstamos, como, por ejemplo, qué se incluiría en el pago de mi hipoteca (seguro de vivienda e impuestos sobre la propiedad, entre otros), qué tipo de préstamo recomendaría para su situación financiera personal y quién atenderá su préstamo (un banco u otra empresa).

Recuerde preguntar cuánto tiempo estará fija la tasa de este préstamo y si podrá obtener un interés más bajo si la tasa de mercado cae durante el período de su préstamo, averigüe cuánto tiempo llevará el proceso de aprobación, asignación de fondos y cierre del préstamo, pregunte si hay algún cargo o penalización por pagar por adelantado este préstamo o realizar pagos a capital y es importante saber cuánto pagará en total durante la vigencia de este préstamo. El portal de búsqueda de viviendas Zillow señala que, cuando se trata de elegir un prestamista hipotecario, es importante comparar precios y hablar con al menos tres de ellos para tener una idea de la atención personal que recibirá, las tasas de interés y los detalles del préstamo que pueden brindarle. Zillow sugiere que si usted está comprando vivienda por primera vez o no tiene un puntaje de crédito ideal debe ser aún más precavido en la escogencia de su prestamista, pues necesitará que este sea su aliado y lo ayude a mejorar su perfil crediticio para poder ser aprobado para un

Una parte importante de escoger un prestamista es comparar estimaciones de préstamos (loan estimate, por su denominación en inglés), por lo que es buena idea solicitarles una estimación del préstamo, que puede ayudarlo a comparar fácilmente los detalles de su financiamiento, incluida la tasa de interés, las tarifas, el pago mensual y otros detalles. Para Dexiel Díaz, experto financiero y gerente de ventas de Paramount Residential Mortgage Group, compañía enfocada en la gestión de créditos hipotecarios por casi dos décadas, uno de los aspectos más importantes es la atención personalizada. “En un mercado tan competitivo, creo que lo que te diferencia de los demás es el trato que puedas darles a las personas que quieren comprar una casa.”. “No se trata solamente de conseguir un préstamo hipotecario, hay que entender lo que quiere y necesita el cliente, asesorarlo y educarlo de acuerdo a sus condiciones crediticias y financieras y sobre todo, ser lo más transparente y honesto posible. Una de las principales recomendaciones antes de escoger a su prestamista, es ayudarse a sí mismo, es decir, siga los pasos básicos para que sus condiciones financieras sean las mejores posibles. Por ejemplo, debe cuidar y fortalecer su crédito pagando deudas atrasadas y saldos altos, realizando sus pagos a tiempos y evitando endeudarse en más del 30% del total de su capacidad crediticia. Recuerde que, tener un buen puntaje de crédito le deja ver a los prestamistas y originadores de préstamos que pueden confiar en que usted pagará sus deudas a tiempo, por lo que le ofrecerán tasas de interés más favorables. Además de un crédito sólido, los prestamistas quieren ver que puede manejar su deuda existente junto con un nuevo pago de hipoteca, por lo que analizarán su relación deuda-ingresos, así que es recomendable que evite tomar nuevos préstamos o hacer grandes compras con tarjetas de crédito durante al menos tres meses (o más) antes de solicitar una hipoteca. Una forma de agilizar la obtención de su préstamo hipotecario es mantener al día sus documentos financieros, pues cualquier prestamista que escoja los necesitará para poder pre-calificarlo. ex and childhood are two words that should never be together. However, currently the line that divides them is getting thinner. This wanted to portray the film Cuties, released in Netflix on September, that, although questionable, puts on the table the issue of child hypersexualization. Hypersexualization is the tendency to define the value of a person based on her or his sex appeal. In children, it has to do with them adopting patterns and values of a sexual connotation that are not appropriate to them because of their age. In the film this is shown in the character of Amy, an 11-year-old girl who has a premature sexual awakening after joining a group of girls who do twerking. Quickly, what begins as a dance practice, triggers inadequate behaviors that are set in social media. The French movie is so explicit that it created a movement in social media of people concerned about the way in which teenage actresses were “exploited” to portray the sexual behavior that many children are engaged into today. Even the promotional poster showing scantily clad girls in sexual poses was strongly criticized. But beyond the discussion around the film, for many a misguided attempt to raise awareness about child sexualization, it’s imperative to evaluate what we are doing as a society to instill sexual behaviors in children who should be enjoying their childhood instead of wanting to copy adults. We can’t ignore the fact that we live in a world in which sex has been exalted in an excessive way and in this reality children are also involved. They too sing reggaeton with their explicit lyrics, go to concerts where artists display sexual conducts and watch TV shows in which sex is the predominant subject. Is the solution to this problem canceling Netflix as many did after the film was released, banning the use of social media or boycotting reggaeton? Do parents have the power to reverse this reality so that we have healthier children? These and other questions are discussed below.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND ITS ROLE OF “BABYSITTER”

Music, movies and television, used up by both adults and children, have always been highly influenced by sex. In the 60s, 70s and 80s, although reggaeton and social media didn’t exist, rock, salsa and pop had lyrics alluding to sex, while TV shows and movies told stories with sexual content. So why is this more predominant today? The simplest

answer is censorship or, rather, the lack of it. In past decades, content of a sexual nature was not easily accessible to minors. Songs with sexual lyrics were censored on the radio and television was less explicit in the family segment. For Sabina García, a psychologist and family and couple therapist, all this changed with social networks that are now reachable to children. That alone wouldn’t be detrimental if it wasn’t for the fact that a wide variety of content can be viewed and posted on them without much control. For this reason, platforms such as TikTok are being used to a great extent by children and tweens who upload videos in which they dance in a sexual manner or wear tight clothes, often times before silence witnesses adults. “Children are being guided by what they see on social media. A 9-year-old girl, who is at a very impressionable age, sees another girl dancing sensually with tight clothes and wants to be like her in order to gain social acceptance,” García says. Sometimes it is the adults themselves who promote this type of behavior by asking them age-inappropriate questions, such as whether or not they have a romantic partner or telling them that at their age they should’t be playing with dolls. “A girl enters social media, sees what people is talking about there and thinks that perhaps she should be having a boyfriend instead of playing with dolls,” adds García. The problem turns worse when there aren’t adults around to help the child process that information. Quite the opposite, it is very common for parents to focus so much on their work that they somehow desensitize to the content their children consume. In this sense, social networks and even television are not the problem but rather the lack of parental control and the tendency to use these platforms as babysitters that “educate” and entertain children in the absence of adults. The most concerning part is that often times children access social media at ages when they lack the level of maturity to do so. It is not recommended to provide a cell phone to a child under 12 years of age or give them unlimited access to social networks. This doesn’t mean social media is to be banned. Instead, adults should be next to their children to help

them assimilate what they see. “It’s about having an open conversation, monitoring what they do on social networks and teaching them what is allowed and what isn’t on those platforms. Explain them, for instance, it’s not allowed to send nude photos or videos,” she says.

PARENTS, THE REAL EDUCATORS

In such a sexualized world, the antidote is open dialogue around sexuality and body image. “You have to teach children the anatomical names of their private parts and that no one can touch them. Also, talk with them about the songs lyrics and explain what is considered appropriate and what is not for their age,” García advises. With regard to music, it is recommended to elaborate on the difference between dancing in a sassy way and making obscene dance moves, understanding that the word “sexy” should not be part of a child’s vocabulary nor should it be measured based on this. As adults, we should teach both boys and girls that the value of a person doesn’t lie in their sensuality or physical beauty, but rather in their intelligence, goodness at heart, ability to work as a team member or in their willingness to help others. “Sometimes kids have low self-esteem because everyone around them is focused on how they look. If parents were more focused on their values instead of wanting them to mature quickly, they would be less exposed,” adds García. On the other hand, it’s imperative to talk with them about consent, the importance of always respecting the word ‘no’ and saying it when necessary, and to ask permission for something as simple as tickling someone else.

INFANCIA SEXUALIZADA en tiempos sin censura POR: DIANA BELLO ARISTIZÁBAL

l sexo y la infancia son dos temas que nunca deberían estar conectados. Sin embargo, en la actualidad la línea que los divide es cada vez más delgada. Precisamente esto quiso mostrar la película ‘Cuties’ estrenada en septiembre en Netflix que, aunque cuestionable, pone sobre la mesa el tema de la hipersexualización infantil. La hipersexualización se define como la tendencia a definir el valor de una persona en función del deseo sexual que despierta. En el caso de los niños tiene que ver con el hecho de que asuman unos patrones y valores de connotación sexual que no les corresponden por su edad. En la película esto se refleja en el personaje de Amy, una niña de 11 años que tiene un despertar sexual prematuro tras unirse a un grupo de niñas que hacen twerking o perreo. Rápidamente lo que empieza como la práctica de un baile, desencadena conductas inapropiadas que tienen como telón de fondo las redes sociales. La cinta francesa es tan explícita que generó un movimiento en redes sociales de personas preocupadas por la forma en que se “explota” a actrices adolescentes para reflejar la conducta sexual que tienen hoy muchos niños. Incluso, se critica fuertemente el afiche promocional que muestra a unas niñas ligeras de ropa en poses de carácter sexual. Pero más allá de la discusión alrededor de la película, para muchos un desatinado intento de generar conciencia sobre la sexualización infantil, conviene analizar qué estamos haciendo como sociedad para generar conductas sexuales en niños que deberían estar disfrutando de su infancia en lugar de querer imitar a los adultos. Y es que no se puede desconocer que vivimos en un mundo en el que se exalta el sexo de forma exagerada y a esto los niños no son ajenos, pues ellos también cantan el reggaetón con sus letras explícitas, asisten a conciertos donde los artistas adoptan comportamientos sexuales y ven series de televisión en las que el sexo es el tema predominante. ¿Es la solución a esta problemática cancelar Netflix como muchos hicieron luego de que se estrenara la película, prohibir el uso de las redes sociales o boicotear el reggaetón?, ¿tienen los padres el poder de revertir esta realidad para que tengamos niños más sanos? Estas y otras cuestiones las analizamos a continuación.

LAS REDES SOCIALES Y SU ROL DE “NIÑERAS”

El sexo siempre ha tenido una gran influencia en la música, el cine y la televisión consumida por niños y adultos. En las décadas de los 60, 70 y 80 aunque no existían ni el reggaetón ni las redes sociales, el rock, la salsa y el pop tenían letras alusivas al sexo y los programas de televisión y las películas contaban historias con contenido sexual.

Entonces, ¿por qué hoy el tema está agudizado? La respuesta más simple está en la censura o, más bien, la falta de ella. Antes, el contenido de carácter sexual no era de fácil acceso para los menores de edad. Las canciones con contenido sexual eran censuradas en la radio y la televisión era menos explícita en la franja familiar. Para Sabina García, sicóloga y terapeuta de familias y pareja, todo esto cambió con las redes sociales que son accesibles para los niños. Eso no sería perjudicial por sí solo, sino fuera porque en ellas se puede ver y publicar una gran variedad de contenido con un control mínimo. Por eso, plataformas como TikTok están siendo usadas en gran medida por niños y preadolescentes que suben videos en los que bailan sensualmente o se ponen ropa apretada, muchas veces ante la mirada indiferente de los adultos. “Los niños se están guiando por lo que ven en las redes sociales. Así, una niña de 9 años, que está en una edad muy impresionable, ve a otra bailar sensualmente con ropa pegada y quiere ser como ella para tener aceptación social”, comenta. A veces son los mismos adultos quienes promueven este tipo de conductas al hacer preguntas no apropiadas para la edad del menor como, por ejemplo, indagar en si tiene o no pareja o decirle que a su edad ya no debería jugar con muñecas. “Una niña ingresa en redes sociales, ve de lo que se está hablando y piensa que quizás debería estar pensando en tener novio en lugar de jugar con las muñecas”, añade García. El problema se agudiza cuando no hay un adulto cerca que ayude al niño a procesar esa información. Por el contrario, es muy común que los padres se enfoquen tanto en su trabajo que se desensibilicen frente al contenido que consumen sus hijos. En este sentido, las redes sociales e, incluso, la televisión no son el problema sino la falta de control parental y la tendencia a usar estos medios como niñeras que “educan” y entretienen a los niños ante la ausencia del adulto. Lo preocupante es que muchas veces acceden a las redes sociales a edades en las que no tienen la madurez para hacerlo. No se recomienda proporcionarle un celular a un niño menor de 12 años ni darle acceso libre a redes sociales. Esto no significa que estén vetadas, sino que deben verlas en compañía de un adulto que les ayude a digerir sus contenidos. “Se trata de hablar abiertamente con ellos, monitorear lo que hacen en redes y enseñarles qué está permitido y qué no en esas plataformas. Por

ejemplo, explicarles que no se pueden enviar fotos o videos sin ropa”, comenta.

PADRES, LOS VERDADEROS EDUCADORES

En un mundo tan sexualizado, el antídoto es el diálogo abierto frente a la sexualidad y el cuerpo. “Hay que enseñarles a los niños los nombres anatómicos de sus partes privadas, decirles que nadie los puede tocar, hablar sobre las letras de las canciones y explicarles qué se considera apropiado y qué no para la edad que tienen”, enfatiza García. Con respecto a la música, la recomendación es explicarles cuál es la diferencia entre bailar de forma pícara y vulgar entendiendo que la palabra ‘sensual’ no debería hacer parte del vocabulario de un niño ni debería ser medido en función de esto. Así, es preciso recalcarles tanto a niñas como a niños que el valor de una persona no está en su sensualidad o belleza física, sino en su inteligencia, bondad, habilidad para trabajar en equipo o en su solidaridad. “A veces los niños tienen autoestima baja porque todo el mundo se concentra en cómo lucen. Si los padres se enfocaran más en sus valores y no tuvieran afán de que maduraran rápido, ellos estarían menos expuestos”, añade García. Por otro lado, hay que hablarles de las relaciones consensuadas, a siempre respetar la palabra ‘no’ y decirla cuando sea necesario y a pedir permiso para algo tan sencillo como hacer cosquillas.

la pandemia

ctubre es el mes de concientización sobre el cáncer de mama, y contribuye a aumentar la atención y el apoyo a la sensibilización, la detección precoz, el tratamiento y los cuidados paliativos. Este año hemos visto cómo muchas de las actividades diarias tan comunes, como ir a clases y a nuestro trabajo, se paralizaron con la llegada del coronavirus. Pero el cáncer de mama no para y la temprana detección es sumamente importante. Debido a la pandemia de COVID-19, los procedimientos médicos optativos, incluyendo las pruebas para la detección del cáncer, fueron suspendidos en gran medida para dar prioridad a necesidades de carácter urgente y reducir la exposición al coronavirus en los centros de atención médica. En consecuencia, ha habido una caída significativa en las pruebas para detectar el cáncer de mama; las mamografías, las ecografías y las resonancias magnéticas, se han retrasado en todo el país debido al COVID-19. Esta caída puede terminar costando muchas vidas; cualquier retraso en descubrir que existe cáncer de mama puede ser fatal en algunos casos, pues el cáncer de mama es tratable si se detecta a tiempo. Según estadísticas de BreastCancer.Org, aproximadamente una de cada ocho mujeres en Estados Unidos desarrolla un cáncer de mama invasivo en algún momento de su vida. Se estima que, en el 2020, habrá más de 300.000 nuevos casos de cáncer de mama. Desafortunadamente, estas estadísticas no se detienen debido a la pandemia mundial.

LA DETECCIÓN DEL CÁNCER SIGUE SIENDO IMPORTANTE

Aunque ha habido retrasos recientes, la detección regular del cáncer de seno sigue siendo importante. A medida que el país asume la “nueva” normalidad y entidades estatales autorizan la reapertura de negocios con restricciones de seguridad más relajadas, muchos

hospitales y centros de atención médica han vuelto a programar los procedimientos médicos optativos, incluyendo las pruebas para la detección del cáncer. Si usted tenía programada una cita para la realización de pruebas para la detección que fueron postergadas o canceladas, llame a su médico de atención primaria o ginecólogo para reprogramar las pruebas de detección. Si hay alguna señal o síntoma que pudiera indicar la posibilidad de cáncer, usted debe hablar con su médico de inmediato. Las señales pueden presentar: • Dureza, abultamiento o protuberancia en el seno. (Estas pueden ser NO dolorosas o sensibles a la palpación). • Cambios en la forma o tamaño de los senos. • Salida de algún líquido a través del pezón. • Hoyuelos o hendiduras en la piel de alguno de los senos. • Irritación persistente de la piel. Recuerde que los efectos por retrasar la detección pueden ser significativos. Un retraso en el tratamiento puede significar la diferencia entre poder tratar eficazmente el cáncer de mama y no poder detener la propagación del cancer mortal. Por otro lado, recuerde que autoexaminarse las mamas de forma regular, puede ser una buena forma de detectar el cáncer de seno temprano . Alrededor del 20 % de los casos de cáncer de mama se detectan durante una exploración física. La mayoría de las mujeres deberían someterse a una mastografía (mamograma) cada año. Sin embargo, las más importantes organizaciones encargadas de emitir las recomendaciones para las pruebas de detección recomiendan que toda mujer de 55 años o mayor puede optar por someterse a esta prueba de detección cada dos años. Si usted tiene 55 años o más y ha obtenido resultados normales en un mamograma que se haya hecho hace no más de un año, usted tiene la opción de cambiar su frecuencia para que el siguiente mamograma

sea a los 24 meses a partir de la fecha de la última vez que lo hizo.

SENSIBILIZACIÓN VIRTUAL SOBRE EL CÁNCER DE MAMA

La pandemia de COVID-19 también ha frenado varias actividades para hacer campañas sobre concientizar sobre la detección y el tratamiento del cáncer de mama. Si bien muchos eventos han sido cancelados o pospuestos, también se han reinventado otros. Hay muchas actividades en las que usted puede participar y fomentar la conciencia sobre el cáncer de seno. Durante el mes de octubre, habrá muchos foros de discusión virtuales sobre la sensibilización sobre el cáncer, cómo lidiar con los efectos secundarios, ayuda y experiencias. Es una buena manera de que usted se involucre y muestre tu apoyo, así sea online. Por ejemplo, el American Cancer Society está organizando una recaudación de fondos virtual a nivel nacional. Si desea ayudar o participar, puede descargar la aplicación para recaudar fondos. Por otro lado, la organización Susan G. Doral Referendum The ballots of the November 3rd Election will include six amendments to the Charter of the City of Doral. This is required as per our Charter: Section 6.02. Charter revision. (a) Charter Commission. At its first regular meeting in November, 2008, and every fifth year thereafter, the Council shall appoint and fund a Charter revision commission (the “Charter Commission”). The Charter Commission shall commence its proceedings within 15 days after appointment by the Council. If the Charter Commission determines that a revision is needed, it shall draft such amendments to this Charter as it deems appropriate and submit the same to the Council not later than April 1st of the year following appointment. The Council shall, not less than 60 days or more than 120 days after submission of the proposed amendments to the Council, submit the proposed amendments to the electors of the City in accordance with the provisions of Section 6.01. (b) Composition. The Charter Commission shall consist of five electors residing in the City, one of whom shall have served as a member of the previous Charter Commission. Each Member of the Council shall appoint one elector to the Charter Commission. As required the Charter Commission was formed with the following members: Chair Mr. Jesse A. Jones Vice Chair Frank Patrick Cuneo Commission Member Oscar Puig-Corve Commission Member Belinda Leon Commission Member Ricardo Morales.

Doral Referendum 1 Expand the role of Office of Charter Enforcement; revise process for selection Charter Enforcement Official It is proposed that the Charter be amended to revise the requirements for the appointment of the Selection Committee and permit the members of the Selection Committee to be appointed by the Mayor and Council; establish minimum qualifications for the Charter Enforcement Official; expand the role of the Office of Charter Enforcement to include investigations and enforcement of persons doing business with the city and clarify the process for establishing the

operating budget. Comment: This is an improvement to the role of the Charter Enforcement Official, which will give a much faster process in order to protect the transparency and ethics of the City and people and companies doing business with the City. Doral Referendum 2 Adopt a process for naming City properties that doesn’t limit the naming to posthumous Nominees It is proposed that the Charter be amended to adopt a procedure for naming properties and facilities after an individual or organization that does not limit the naming and designations to posthumous nominees Comment: The discussion was centered around the fact that the naming of City properties always requires Council approval. Arguably, expanding the scope to living persons may provide additional opportunities to the City for donations. Doral Referendum 3 Change the minimum qualifications for the position of City Manager Currently the Charter authorizes the City Manager to have minimum qualifications of a combination of a bachelor’s degree, and three (3) years’ public administration experience; or ten (10) years’ experience in a City Manager or Assistant City Manager position. Shall the Charter be amended to replace the bachelor’s degree as the minimum educational requirement and require a master’s degree in public administration, business administration or other related fields from an accredited college or university Comment: improves the requirements for the position elevating the minimum qualifications with the intend of sustaining the high quality of the administration. Doral Referendum 4 Change the minimum qualifications for the position of City Attorney Currently the Charter authorizes the City Attorney to have no less than five years of experience of practice in Florida and at least three years of experience in local government law. Shall the minimum requirements be amended to require the City Attorney to have been admitted to practice in Florida for no less than ten years and to have no less than five years of experience in the practice of local government law?

Comments: Same as the previous one. It establishes a higher standard for the position qualifications. Doral Referendum 5 Change election to plurality occurring May of each even numbered year; eliminating runoff Elections It is proposed the Charter be amended to change the election to a plurality election in May of even numbered years eliminating runoff elections. The change to May will result in an increase of approximately eighteen (18) months in the terms of the officials elected in 2018 and 2020. Shall the harter be amended to a plurality election in May of even numbered years eliminating runoff elections? Comment: It intends to make the local elections more meaningful by separating it from the Presidential elections. It allows the community to dedicate the process to the local municipality. It reduces the impact of hidden outside interest participating in the electoral process. Improves the involvement of the electorate and a better understanding of the candidates/proposals. Doral Referendum 6 Change Charter Commission Review to every six years and extend commission’s term to general Election Currently the Charter provides that the Charter Revision Commission shall meet every fifth year. Shall the Charter be amended to provide that the Charter Revision Commission shall meet every sixth year and continue until the day after the general election? Comment: Based on the experience of the City after its foundation the commission recommends to extend these reviews to six instead of five years. The City of Doral Charter is the constitution of our community. The process established for its review allows for an independent process to improve on this document from previous experiences and needs as the City grows and changes. This is a legal process, not political, and must be respected. We encourage all residents to participate in this process and become an informed voter on the issues. As required by law all six referendums have been added to the ballot, it is now up to the informed voter to make the decisions. Is a Tax Time Bomb Lurking in Your Paycheck?

Does your paycheck look a little higher than normal? If so, it could be a tax time bomb.

THE PROBLEM

A payroll tax deferral beginning September 1 was recently signed via a presidential executive order. The potential deferral of your portion of Social Security as an employee could raise your take home pay temporarily until January 2021. Beginning in 2021, the deferred Social Security will then need to be paid. This year’s tax deferral is NOT currently a tax holiday. So if your employer removes your Social Security tax from your paycheck, there is a real possibility you will need to pay it back between January 2021 and April 2021. That could mean a pretty large tax bill for you in early 2021!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

• The payroll tax deferral is optional for most employers. Your employer is not required to defer your Social Security payments. However, federal employees will be seeing this tax reduction from September through December of this year. If your employer chooses to defer your Social Security taxes, in all likelihood, they will let you know. • Compare paychecks. If you are unsure whether your employer is participating in the tax deferral, get your last paycheck from August and compare it with your most recent paycheck. If the amounts are the same, then your Social Security and other taxes are still being withheld. If you notice that the amounts are different, or that no Social Security taxes are withheld from your current paycheck, then that’s a signal you may have a tax repayment bill in early 2021. • Remember to keep checking each paycheck. Companies are struggling to figure out if they are required to comply with the presidential executive order, payroll providers are trying to figure out how to comply and everyone is wondering whether the tax obligation will be permanently forgiven. So, you will need to keep checking your paycheck throughout the balance of 2020. • Be prepared to pay it back. If taxes have been deferred from your paycheck through the end of 2020, be prepared to have your paycheck withholdings increase substantially beginning in 2021. If possible, open a savings account to set aside the taxes that were not withheld from your paychecks. When it comes time to pay your taxes, you will have funds to weather the repayment storm. • Check for updates. There’s a chance Congress passes a law that forgives the deferred taxes. If this happens, you will have a nice start on an emergency fund should you need it. he Boy Scouts of America - South Florida Council is proud to present the iScouting!… Vale la Pena! Service Award to Francisco Xavier Gamez, resident of Doral, Florida. The iScouting!… Vale la Pena! Service Award recognizes outstanding service by an adult or an organization for demonstrated involvement in the development and implementation of Scouting opportunities for Hispanic/Latino youth. Francisco, 26, serves as the Troop Committee Chair for Scouts BSA Troop 552 Doral, an un-paid volunteer position. He has been a scout since the fourth grade and earned the highest rank in Scouts BSA, the rank of Eagle Scout. He has continued to volunteer his time as an adult leader ever since. Francisco is being recognized for making a significant contribution while acting as an advocate for Hispanic/Latino youth, encouraging outreach to improve their conditions, and sensitizing Scouting’s and America’s leadership to these conditions. For enabling Hispanic/Latino organizations to better understand the benefits of Scouting for Hispanic/Latino youth and families. For providing leadership in promoting Scouting for Hispanic/Latino youth regardless of gender, race, religion, economic background, sexual orientation, or creed. For helping others understand how to make Scouting operations meaningful to Hispanic/Latinos, including outreach and organization methods. For promoting bi-lingual participation, translation services, and Spanish interpreter programs for youth and adults. For providing, through achievements and deeds, a civic and charitable role model for youth. And for his leadership in funding, training, methods development, and other administrative support necessary to make Scouting effective in Hispanic/Latino communities. It is no coincidence this recognition coincides with the 2020 National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations occurring between September 15th, 2020 and October 15th, 2020. Enacted into law on August 17, 1988 (on the approval of Public Law 100-402), each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th to October 15th, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The answer is personal and depends on several factors, such as your current cash needs, your current health, and your family longevity. You should also consider plans to work in retirement and other sources of retirement income. Most importantly, study your future financial needs and obligations, and calculate your future Social Security benefit. We encourage you to weigh all the facts carefully before making the crucial decision about when to begin receiving Social Security benefits.
