October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Early Detection Can Save Lives

ctober is designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time of the year in which a large number of companies and individuals come together to promote breast cancer awareness, share information on the disease (risk and preventive measures) and provide access to different services and support.

About 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. About 40,610 women in the U.S. are expected to die in 2017 from breast cancer, though death rates have been decreasing since 1989. Women under 50 have experienced larger decreases. These decreases are thought to be the result of treatment advances, earlier detection through screening, and increased awareness.

Effective education, screening and healthy habits are extremely important. Part of the awareness is learning how to recognize early signs of cancer and seek prompt medical attention for symptoms. Most cases of breast cancer are found by women noticing unusual changes in their bodies, taking the initiative and making an appointment to see the doctor as soon as possible.

While it’s true that most lumps are found by women themselves, the abnormality in a breast can be so difficult to feel that only someone with experience would recognize it. Lumps, thickening, asymmetry (a difference in appearance between the two breasts) — changes in your breasts that you may not notice or think are “normal” — may be detected by a health professional who examines many breasts regularly.

Breastcancer.org recommends that women have a breast physical exam by a health professional every year.

THERE ARE 3 BEST WAYS TO CHECK YOUR BREASTS:

1. In the Mirror – Look at your breasts in the mirror, first with your arms at your sides, then high above your head. Look for any changes in contour, any swelling, dimpling of the skin, or changes to the nipples. Then, put your hands on your hips and flex your chest muscles like Wonder Woman, examining for the same changes.

2. In the Shower – With the pads of your fingers, feel around your breast in a circular motion. Be sure to check the entire breast and armpit area. Feel for any lumps, thickening, or a hardened knot.

3. Lying Down – Put a pillow under your right shoulder and raise your right arm above your head.

Use light, medium, and firm pressures as you move your fingers in small circular motions, covering the entire breast and armpit area. Squeeze the nipple, check for lumps and discharge, then repeat these steps for your left breast.

Use a variety of motions and pressures. This will help make sure that you are examining your breasts thoroughly.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT MAMMOGRAMS

Mammography is our most powerful breast cancer detection tool. Mammograms can save your life. Finding breast cancer early reduces your risk of dying from the disease by 25-30% or more.

Women should begin having mammograms yearly at age 40, or earlier if they’re at high risk.

Mammography is a fast procedure (about 20 minutes), and discomfort is minimal for most women. The procedure is safe: there’s only a very tiny amount of radiation exposure from a mammogram. To relieve the anxiety of waiting for results, try to go to a center that will give you results before you leave.

Try to get a digital mammogram. A digital mammogram is recorded onto a computer so that doctors can enlarge certain sections to look at them more closely.

If you’re at high risk of breast cancer, have a strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer, or have had radiation treatment to the chest in the past, it’s recommended that you start having annual mammograms at a younger age (often beginning around age 30). Discuss your personalized screening plan with your healthcare provider.

Octubre es el mes de la Concientización del Cáncer de Mama

La detección temprana del cáncer de mama puede salvar vidas

O

ctubre es el mes dedicado a la Concientización sobre el Cáncer de Seno; un momento del año en el que un gran número de empresas y personas se unen para compartir información y crear conciencia sobre esta temible enfermedad, sus riesgos y medidas preventivas, así como informar sobre los distintos servicios y apoyo a las personas que la padecen.

Aproximadamente 1 de cada 8 mujeres en los Estados Unidos desarrolla cáncer de mama invasivo en el transcurso de su vida. Las proyecciones indicaban que, para el 2017, morirían alrededor de 40.610 mujeres en los Estados Unidos a causa del cáncer de mama, aunque las tasas de mortalidad están en descenso desde 1989, con mayores descensos en mujeres menores de 50 años. Se cree que estos descensos son el resultado de los adelantos en los tratamientos, la detección temprana a través de la revisión y el aumento de la concientización sobre el tema.

La educación efectiva, un diagnóstico oportuno y hábitos saludables son muy importantes. Parte de la sensibilización es aprender a reconocer los signos tempranos de cáncer y buscar atención médica inmediata ante cualquier síntoma. La mayoría de los casos de cáncer de seno se detectan por notar cambios inusuales en el cuerpo, tomar la iniciativa y hacer una cita con el médico a la mayor brevedad. Mientras más temprano se detecte, mayor será la probabilidad de salir victorioso.

Si bien es cierto que la mayoría de los bultos son descubiertos por las mismas mujeres, puede que la anomalía en una mama sea muy difícil de palpar, entonces solo un doctor podría reconocerlo. Bultos, engrosamientos, asimetrías (diferencias de apariencia entre una mama y la otra); cambios en la mama que puedes ignorar o pensar que son “normales” pueden ser detectados por un profesional de la salud que examina mamas habitualmente.

Alrededor del 20 % de las veces, los casos de cáncer de mama son descubiertos únicamente en la exploración física y no aparecen en una mamografía.

La Sociedad Americana del Cáncer recomienda que las mujeres de entre 20 y 40 años se sometan a una exploración física mamas como parte de su examen de salud periódico (habitual) realizado por un profesional de la salud, preferentemente cada tres años. HAY 3 MEJORES MANERAS DE COMPROBAR SUS SENOS:

1. En el Espejo – Mire sus senos en el espejo, primero con los brazos a los lados, luego muy por encima de su cabeza. Debe inspeccionar ambos senos, observando si hay cambios en la piel, hundimientos, protuberancias, heridas o cambios en el pezón. Luego, ponga sus manos en sus caderas y flexione sus músculos del pecho como “La Mujer Maravilla”, examinando los mismos cambios.

2. En la ducha – Con las puntas de los dedos, revise alrededor de su pecho en un movimiento circular.

Asegúrese de revisar el área del pecho y las axilas. Revise si siente cualquier engrosamiento, o un nudo endurecido.

Get to Know the Candidates for Doral City Council The main proposals of the candidates running for Seat 4 at the City of Doral Council are: solutions to traffic, education and humanization of the city, technologic development and youth programs.

he next elections to City Council will take place on November 6th, 2018; it will be then when we will elect the new occupants of seats 2 and 4, who will have the responsibility to guide the destiny of our city.

Up to now, there are four candidates registered to run for Seat 4: the teacher and educational advisor Belinda Leon; former City of Doral Chief of Staff Rafael Pineyro; community activist Digna Cabral and former Councilwoman Sandra Ruiz.

BELINDA LEON

For almost 25 years, Belinda Leon, who has a PhD in Education, has worked with professional educators, students, and parents in the higher education field. Her experience has allowed her to open her own advisory company, Premier Education Consulting, through which she offers counsel, training and support in the areas of academic operation to higher education institutions, and assists high school students and their families to get prepared for college.

Belinda has worked with the Girl Scouts of America, Upward Bound in Miami Dade College, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and the City of Doral, as well as with local schools, offering presentations on how to be prepared for college, leadership and empowering of young people. Since 2005, she has been a mentor for young girls at risk to whom she

tries to instill the importance of education.

Belinda, who resides in Doral since 2003, is a widow with two young daughters, eight and six years old. Her girls inspired her to think that through her job as a public servant she would be able to promote better education, improve the neighborhoods and homes for the residents of Doral.

“By being a Councilwoman, I will be allowed to take part in the changes and the growth, and not just be a spectator. I have enjoyed my job as an educator very much and I believe this is the best guarantee I can offer that I will make the decisions that will help our quality of life and the one for our children.

As main points of her political proposal, Belinda mentioned the traffic issue. “I believe that the City of Doral is already taking some important steps to take care of this problem, but we have to realize that it will not be solved from one day to the other.

We need to continue working in new projects, like a more efficient use of the trolley.”

To Belinda, children and youth are particularly important. “In our city, there are many sport programs for the little ones, but I believe there is a lack of programs for teenagers, for example, activities related to robotics or music or temporal jobs during the summer in businesses in Doral.” Another vital issue for Belinda is the rescue of moral values and good behavior.

RAFAEL PINEYRO

Rafael Pineyro was born in Venezuela. He immigrated to the United States when he was 15 years old and since then he has dedicated his time to his education and preparation as a professional.

He has created a beautiful family and, for more than 11 years, has focused his work on social-community service and public administration, first working for the Miami Dade County and later at the City of Doral.

He is a successful professional, who earned a degree in Public Administration and a Masters in Psychology. He worked for the Miami Dade County first, and after that with a judge in Williamson County, completing his formation in the legal public service focused on Social Reintegration.

Rafael has participated in organizations such as IVAC, Venezuelan Brotherhood Association, Early Learning Coalition and Kiwanis, among others and had worked with two different administrations in the City of Doral. Following the rules stablished on the City Charter, Rafael resigned to his position as employee in order to be able to run as candidate for Seat 4 on the City Council.

Having been part of the administrative support teams for the only two Mayors that have led the City of Doral, Rafael considers that he knows firsthand where do we come from, what are we doing and where are we going, for this reason he is greatly excited about developing new ideas that conduce to

getting a more authentic city, in which its residents and the thousands of transient people that come here every day can work together with the local government to make Doral the best destination in the metropolitan area of Miami.

As a Councilman, Rafael looks forward to seeing the conclusion of projects in which he had worked during his time as a City of Doral employee, such as the incorporation of several geographic areas to our city and the rationalization of the budget. “We are also researching more on the use of technology, to be able to achieve a more advanced and developed city.”

He added that smart cities are oriented to the extensive improvement of the quality of life of its residents. “My objective is to find proposals and solutions targeted to the construction and development of the city of the XXI century, a Smart City. I dream with a self-sustainable city that can change gradually, until it turns into a model city and that is in technological agreement to the present times.”

Rafael is also interested on business development and he wants to create job opportunities for those that live or have businesses in Doral. “I believe that it is vital to support the small and medium size businesses, and also to promote incentive programs that decrease their fiscal responsibilities.” Another important subject for this young politician is the humanization of our community through cultural, educational and recreational programs for our families.

DIGNA CABRAL

Digna Cabral, who has three children, has been working for ten years as a research analyst for the Department of Neurology at the University of Miami and is an active member of our community, having served in different areas of the city, activity that has allowed her to understand the needs and concerns of our residents.

Digna has been a member of “Damas del Doral” (institution that assists the families at the Ronald McDonald House at the Jackson Memorial Hospital), Vice President of the Parks and Police 4Kids, member of the PTA of Doral schools, catechist at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, volunteer at “Hogares Luvy” (Orphanage for children with special needs in Dominican Republic) and President of the Coronado Condominium, among many other activities that have connected her directly with the communities.

Having living in Doral since 2007, this is her second race as candidate to City Council. Digna wishes that Doral continues to be the best city to live, work, learn and play. “Serving the community is the main reason and motivation behind my decision to run for Council. My goal is to represent the people of Doral, because the truth is that everything is about Doral.”

As for her political proposal, Digna stated that she can summarize it in four points: traffic, responsible growth, a safer community and education, these are the points that she considers the pillars of her

future work as Councilwoman, while continuing paying attention to the needs and requests of the communities.

To ease the vehicular congestion in our city, Digna considers that it is important to work on effective and efficient solutions. “Responsible growth must be accompanied by planned and controlled growth, this interweaves with the search of a safer community that allows us to have a good quality of life and with the education that will allow us to form better citizens and to work together with the School Board and the Authorities of Miami Dade County.”

SANDRA RUIZ

For this edition it was not possible to get the comments of Sandra Ruiz, who supported by her political experience, decided to run for the Mayoral seat of this city, last year, and was defeated in the first round. Ruiz is a founding member of the city and the first woman to be elected to the City Council, where she has served as Councilwoman and Vice Mayor.

Sandra Ruiz, who is Mexican by birth and Californian by upbringing, was elected the first time in 2002 and during the years that she was a Councilwoman her priorities were education, attention to the youth and the financial operation of the city.

as próximas elecciones dentro del Concejo Municipal de la Ciudad de Doral serán el 06 de noviembre del 2018, cuando se escogerán los nuevos ocupantes de las sillas 2 y 4, quienes tendrán la responsabilidad de guiar los destinos de nuestra localidad.

Hasta el momento, hay cuatro candidatos inscritos que optan por la silla 4: la docente y asesora en educación, Belinda León; el ex-asistente del alcalde, Rafael Pineyo; la servidora comunitaria Digna Cabral y la ex-concejal Sandra Ruiz.

BELINDA LEON

Durante casi 25 años, Belinda León, quien es doctora en educación, ha trabajado con educadores profesionales, estudiantes y padres en el sector de la educación superior. Su experiencia en la materia la llevó a abrir su propia empresa de consultoría, Premier Educational Consulting, en la que brinda orientación, capacitación y apoyo en las áreas de operaciones académicas a instituciones colegiadas, así como ayuda a los estudiantes de secundaria y a sus familias a prepararse para la universidad.

Belinda ha trabajado con Girl Scouts of America, Upward Bound en Miami Dade College, la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y la Ciudad de Doral, así como como con las escuelas locales para ofrecer presentaciones sobre la preparación universitaria, el liderazgo y el empoderamiento de los jóvenes. Desde el 2005, ha sido mentora de mujeres jóvenes en riesgo a quienes intenta inculcar la importancia de la educación.

Belinda, quien es residente de Doral desde el 2003, es viuda y tiene dos hijas, de seis y ocho años de edad, señala que fueron justamente sus dos pequeñas niñas quienes la llevaron a pensar que, a través de su trabajo como servidora pública, podría lograr una mejor educación, un mejor vecindario y

un mejor hogar para los residentes de Doral.

“Ser concejal de la Ciudad me permitiría ser parte de los cambios y del crecimiento y no ser sólo una simple observadora. He disfrutado muchísimo mi trabajo como educadora y creo que este es el mejor aval que tengo para poder tomar decisiones que ayuden a nuestra calidad de vida y a la de nuestros hijos”.

Como puntos principales de su propuesta política, Belinda mencionó el tema del tráfico. “Creo que la Ciudad de Doral ya está dando algunos pasos importantes para abordar este problema, pero tenemos que darnos cuenta de que no va a resolverse de la noche a la mañana. Tenemos que seguir trabajando en los proyectos nuevos, así como en el uso más eficiente del Trolley”.

Para Belinda, los niños y jóvenes son particularmente importantes. “Si bien en la ciudad hay muchos programas deportivos para los más pequeños, creo que hacen faltan más opciones para adolescentes, como, por ejemplo, actividades relacionadas con la robótica o la música o trabajos de verano temporales en los negocios de Doral”.

También es vital para Belinda el rescate de los valores y el buen comportamiento.

RAFAEL PINEYRO

Rafael Pineyro nació en Venezuela. Emigró a Estados Unidos a la edad de 15 años y desde entonces se ha dedicado a prepararse profesionalmente, construir una hermosa familia y avocrase, por más de once años, al servicio social-comunitario y a la administración pública, comenzando en el condado de Miami-Dade hasta llegar a la Ciudad de Doral.

Su exitosa vida profesional se ve reflejada en la culminación de su carrera en la Administración Pública y en su maestría en Psicología, para luego trabajar en el condado de Miami-Dade y con un juez del condado de Williamson, completando así su formación en la parte legal del sector público y en los programas de reinserción social.

Rafael ha participado en organizaciones como IVAC, Venezuelan Brotherhood Association, Early Learning Coalition y Kiwanis, entre otras y ha trabajado para dos administraciones diferentes en la alcaldía de Doral. Ahora renunció a su cargo para postularse a la silla 4 del Concejo Municipal.

Tras haber formado parte del equipo de trabajo de los dos únicos alcaldes que ha tenido la Ciudad de Doral, Rafael considera que sabe de primera mano de dónde venimos, qué estamos haciendo y hacia dónde vamos, por lo que le entusiasma enormemente desarrollar nuevas ideas tendientes a la obtención de una ciudad más auténtica, en la que sus residentes y miles de transeúntes diarios, trabajen conjuntamente con su gobierno local para hacer de Doral el mejor destino de la zona metropolitana de Miami.

Para Rafael, en su faceta como concejal, sería muy importante ver culminar proyectos que en los que ha trabajado durante su paso por la Ciudad de Doral, como la incorporación de nuevas áreas geográficas a nuestra localidad y la racionalización del presupuesto. “También estamos indagando más en el uso de la tecnología, para lograr una ciudad más avanzada y desarrollada”.

Agregó que las ciudades inteligentes están orientadas a mejorar extensamente la calidad de vida del ser humano. “Es mi objetivo encontrar propuestas y soluciones dirigidas a la construcción y desarrollo de la ciudad del siglo XXI , una Smart City. Yo sueño con una ciudad auto-sostenible que vaya cambiando gradualmente para convertirse en una ciudad modelo y acorde tecnológicamente a los tiempos que estamos viviendo”.

Rafael también es participe del crecimiento empresarial y de crear oportunidades laborales para quienes viven o tienen negocios en Doral.

“Creo que es vital apoyar a los pequeños y medianos comerciantes, así como promover programas de incentivos relacionados con impuestos que los ayude a disminuir su carga tributaria”. Otro punto importante para este joven político es la humanización de nuestra comunidad a través de programas culturales, educacionales y

recreacionales para nuestras familias.

DIGNA CABRAL

Digna Cabral, quien tiene tres hijos trabaja desde hace diez años como analista de investigación del Departamento de Neurología de la Universidad de Miami y es miembro activo de nuestra comunidad, sirviendo en diferentes áreas de la ciudad, lo que le ha permitido entender las necesidades y preocupaciones que nuestros residentes.

Digna ha sido miembro de las Damas del Doral (institución que brinda asistencia a las familias en la Casa Ronald McDonald en el Jackson Memorial Hospital), vicepresidente del comité de Parks and Police 4Kids, miembro del PTA de escuelas de Doral, catequista de la Iglesia Católica Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, voluntaria de Hogares Luvy (hogar para huérfanos con necesidades especiales en

República Dominicana) y presidenta de la asociación de la comunidad Coronado, entre otras muchas actividades que la han vinculado directamente con las comunidades.

Agradecida por vivir en Doral desde el 2007 y en su segunda postulación al Concejo Municipal, Digna pretende que Doral siga siendo la mejor ciudad para vivir, trabajar, aprender y jugar. “Servir a la comunidad es la principal razón y motivación detrás de mi decisión de postularme como concejal. Mi propósito es representar a la gente de Doral, porque la verdad es que todo se trata de Doral”.

En cuanto a su propuesta política, Digna manifestó que la puede resumir en cuatro puntos principales: tráfico, crecimiento responsable, comunidad más segura y educación, los cuales considera el pilar de su futuro trabajo como concejal, sin dejar de lado la atención a las solicitudes y requerimientos de las comunidades.

Para aliviar el congestionamiento vehicular de nuestra ciudad, Digna considera necesario trabajar en soluciones eficaces y eficientes. “El crecimiento responsable debe ir acompañado del desarrollo planeado y controlado, lo cual se entrelaza con la búsqueda de una comunidad más segura que nos permita tener una buena calidad de vida y con la educación que nos llevará a formar mejores ciudadanos y trabajar en conjunto con la junta

escolar y las autoridades del condado de MiamiDade.

SANDRA RUIZ

Para esta edición no pudimos obtener los comentarios de Sandra Ruíz, quien, avalada por su experiencia política, el año pasado decidió lanzar su candidatura a la Alcaldía de esta ciudad, siendo derrotada en la primera vuelta. Ruíz es miembro fundador de la ciudad y la primera mujer en ser elegida parte del Concejo Municipal, en el que ha ocupado los cargos de concejal y de vice-alcaldesa.

Sandra Ruíz, quien es mexicana de nacimiento y californiana de crianza, fue electa por primera vez en el 2002 y durante los años que ocupó el cargo de concejal le dio prioridad a la educación, atención a la juventud y a la visión financiera de la ciudad.

Florida tiene los peores conductores de Estados Unidos.

El tráfico, ¿Es culpa de los conductores?

Una cultura de imprudencia al volante, heredada de nuestros países de orígenes, parece ser la razón de que seamos los peores conductores del país.

l tráfico es la queja constante de los habitantes de Miami y de la ciudad de Doral y si bien son las autoridades locales y estatales las responsables de buscar solución a este problema, debido al cual perdemos miles de nuestras horas productivas, vale la pena preguntarse qué culpa tenemos los conductores en el congestionamiento vehicular?

Recientemente, fueron publicados en varios medios de comunicación los resultados de un estudio realizado por la empresa SmartAsset, según el cual los conductores de la Florida son, por segundo año consecutivo, los que peor manejan en todo Estados Unidos. Este reporte se basó en la información de la Administración Nacional de Seguridad en el Tráfico en las Carreteras (NHTSA, por sus siglas en inglés), en el cual se afirma que nuestro estado está plagado de malos conductores.

Para llegar a esta conclusión, SmartAsset tomó en cuenta factores como el número de conductores, las detenciones por DUI (personas que conducen bajo los efectos del alcohol), los fallecidos en accidentes de tránsito y la cantidad de búsquedas en Google de “multas por exceso de velocidad” y “tickets de tráfico”.

Hay que señalar, igualmente, que Florida es el segundo estado con menor número de conductores con seguro en todo el país, pues del total de personas con vehículo un asombroso 76.20% no tienen seguro. Para completar, se logró determinar que el 92% de los automovilistas de la Florida usan sus celulares mientras manejan.

Si bien SmartAsset es una prestigiosa compañía de asesoramiento financiero, que orienta a las personas

en la toma de importantes decisiones como compra de vivienda, planificación de jubilación, seguros de vida, préstamos personales, préstamos estudiantiles, compra de vehículos, tarjetas de crédito, refinanciamiento de préstamos, impuestos e inversión, decidimos hacer nuestro propio estudio.

Realizamos una encuesta entre parte de los afectados por este resultado (conductores de Miami y Doral) para saber qué opinaban de esta calificación y si consideran que el hecho de que seamos los peores conductores del país incide en los problemas de tráfico de nuestra ciudad.

Amanda Castellón conduce todos los días a su trabajo y luego recorre similar trayecto para llegar a la universidad. Esta ajetreada chica considera que, en la Florida, especialmente en Miami, hay muchas personas extranjeras que desconocen las leyes de tránsito de Estados Unidos y hace que sean malos conductores. “Esto, obviamente, incide en el tráfico porque un conductor desconocedor de las leyes, complica el desplazamiento de los demás vehículos. Un claro ejemplo, lo podemos ver en los “Stop All Ways”, en los cuales mucha gente no sabe cuándo debe pasar o no lo respetan y lo único que les interesa es pasar primero, sin tratar de entender cómo funciona esta señal de tránsito”.

Antonio Malave considera que en Doral la gente

maneja igual que en Caracas.

“Todas las ciudades de Miami, no sólo Doral, están conformadas por un gran número de personas latinas que no están acostumbradas a respetar las señales de tránsito, pareciera que fuese incluso un tema cultural”.

“Desafortunadamente, en los sitios que no hay sistemas de vigilancia instalados (como las cámaras en los semáforos) es muy frecuente que los conductores no respeten las leyes de tránsito y mucho menos a los peatones, por lo que sí creo que el hecho de que seamos los peores conductores del país afecta negativamente al tráfico”.

Roberto López hace un análisis aún más global, al manifestar que, si comparamos a los conductores de Miami con los de Europa, definitivamente, nosotros somos mucho peor, especialmente en lo que refiere al respeto al peatón. “Aquí las personas que caminan están completamente desprotegidas, cuando la gente va manejando no ve para los lados, ni tiene cuidado con quienes van cruzando la calle”.

totalmente de acuerdo con que estudio sobre los peores conductores, cree que, si bien esto incide en el tráfico, la verdadera razón del congestionamiento vehicular es la urgente necesidad de más vías y calles, porque hay demasiados carros en la ciudad de Miami.

Maritza Gutiérrez vive en Doral y trabaja en Miami Lakes, así que hablarle del tráfico es hacerle referencia al peor de sus tormentos. “Yo me pregunto, por qué la gente toca la corneta en una cola?, por qué si uno pone la luz de cruce no te dejan pasar?, por qué la gente se estaciona donde no debe?, es tan difícil seguir las leyes y ser cortés con los demás conductores?”.

“Claro que el tráfico es culpa de nosotros mismos, si no hay forma de que la gente entienda que debe cumplir las leyes y hacer caso a las señales de tránsito. Yo creo que no se trata de ser el más vivo y pasar primero, ni de llegar dos o tres minutos antes, sino de manejar con responsabilidad, entendiendo que todos necesitamos llegar a tiempo, pero también sanos y salvos a nuestro destino”.

José Pérez considera que el hecho de que Florida tenga los peores conductores de Estados Unidos se debe a que hay muchos latinos viviendo en Miami, los cuales desconocen las leyes y les cuesta adaptarse a la forma en que se conduce en este

país. “Obviamente, eso incide en el tráfico, pero también la falta de un eficiente sistema de transporte público que impide que la gente pueda trasladarse de forma masiva”.

Allan Córdoba también considera que la cantidad de inmigrantes que desconoce las leyes tiene mucho ver con este resultado. “No sólo eso, somos una ciudad excesivamente poblada, lo que provoca estrés y muchas peleas entre los conductores. Ni hablar de la distracción que implica el uso del celular mientras se maneja”.

“Otro problema que colapsa las calles, es que la gente evita usar las autopistas para no pagar el SUNPASS que, realmente, esta cada día más costoso”. Para Córdova, una gran ayuda para los problemas de tráfico de Miami sería mejorar en un 80% el funcionamiento del transporte público.

Michael Mendoza igualmente toca el tema de la inmigración.

“Especialmente en el sur de la Florida hay muchas personas que vienen de otros países en los cuales no se respetan las leyes de tránsito, por lo menos este es mi ejemplo, pues en Perú las personas están acostumbradas a desobedecer las normas”.

Mendoza cree que los conductores sólo son culpables del tráfico en una mínima parte. “Yo viví 17 años en New Jersey, donde hay

transporte público, bien sea en autobús, tren o barco. En Miami, llevo 15 años, durante los cuales el crecimiento poblacional ha sido tan acelerado que no hay suficiente infraestructura vial ni de transporte y esto no esculpa de las personas que manejan, sino de las autoridades.

Anabel Sirio cree que el proceso para obtener la licencia de conducir no es lo suficientemente riguroso, por lo que muchas personas tienen permiso para manejar sin conocer las reglas básicas para hacerlo. “Creo que otro problema es que, en las calles, no hay suficientes policías supervisando a los conductores, ni multando a quienes cometen infracciones. El tráfico es, definitivamente, consecuencia de la pésima forma de conducir de las personas, pues cada día se cometen más infracciones e incluso, hay muchos más accidentes”, comenta Anabel.

Miguel Farro manifiesta: “Soy latino, pero considero que el hecho de que los floridanos seamos los peores conductores de Estados Unidos está directamente relacionado con que el gran porcentaje de personas de otros países que viven en Miami y no se adaptan a la forma de conducir aquí. Pero también creo que hay que tomar en cuenta que no hay suficientes estructuras viales y hay demasiadas escuelas que retrasan el tráfico en las horas de entrada y salida”.

La mayoría de los encuestados coincide en señalar que el desconocimiento o desobediencia a las leyes de tránsito es el responsable de este resultado negativo para los conductores de la Florida, así que bien vale la pena recordar la importancia de conocer, respetar y cumplir las normas mientras conducimos nuestros vehículos.

Florida Karate Clubs abrió sus puertas en Doral

Tras 14 años de exitoso funcionamiento en la ciudad de Weston, Florida Karate Clubs abrió una nueva sede para los niños, jóvenes y adultos de Doral.

on la meta de enseñar a sus estudiantes el estilo de vida de las artes marciales, basado en la disciplina, el respeto, la dedicación y la confianza en sí mismo, el Sensei Luis Sánchez inauguró en nuestra ciudad de Doral la escuela Florida Karate Clubs.

Esta sería la tercera sede de esta prestigiosa escuela de karate en la Florida, pues tienen una en Weston, conocida como Asaka Dojo desde hace 14 años y otra dentro de las instalaciones de la escuela Divine Savior Academy en Doral. “Nosotros enseñamos el arte de Shito Ryu, el cual aprendí desde los ocho años de edad de la mano del Shihan Eduardo Riveros en la Isla de Margarita y profundicé durante mi estadía de dos años en la ciudad de Asaka en Japón.”, agrega el Sensei Sánchez para quien entrenar y construir buenos deportistas es su mayor pasión.

Oriundo de Caracas, el Sensei Luis Sánchez cuenta con la experiencia de 31 años practicando karate y 25 años dando clases de este deporte. En la actualidad, es cinturón negro 5to Dan y campeón Mundial de la WSKF en Kumite y Kata, cuatro veces campeón Panamericano de la WSKF y campeón Nacional de la categoría de Kumite por equipos en Venezuela, Japón y Estados Unidos.

Estos conocimientos le han servido de inspiración para fundar sus escuelas de karate, las cuales están afiliadas a la Federación de Karate de Estados Unidos, a la Shito Kai de Estados Unidos y la Liga de Karate de la Florida, de la cual es co-fundador. “Cabe destacar que este año fuimos el estado con más atletas elegidos en el equipo Nacional de Los Estados Unidos. Esto es gracias al esfuerzo combinado de todos los entrenadores de la Florida, voluntarios y promotores de eventos en nuestro estado” comenta el Sensei Luis Sanchez.

Para el Sensei Sánchez, sus alumnos son lo más importante y por eso ha logrado formar verdaderos campeones deportivos, como la joven de 15 años de

edad, Zoe Meszaro, la actual número 1 del ranking mundial, quien ha sido tres veces campeona de la competencia junior panamericana, cinco veces campeona nacional de la NKF y dos veces campeona de la AAU y ahora va a representar a Estados Unidos en el campeonato mundial de España.

El Sensie Sánchez también mencionó a Santiago Mestroni y Sebastian Maldonado, quienes son miembros actuales del equipo nacional de Estados Unidos; Stefania Mestroni, quien es campeona mundial de la WSKF en la especialidad de Kata; Sofia Maldonado, Adrian Palmieri, Frank Ruiz, Christian Arguello y Andrés Proaño, los cuales han sido medallistas nacionales, son atletas del equipo nacional y han viajado En 1999, la WSKF abrió su sede en la ciudad de Asaka, a diferentes países del mundo a representar a los Estados Japón y el Sensei Sánchez fue elegido por la Federación Unidos en mundiales y torneos internacionales.

Adulthood Readiness: The process of raising independent children

t is every parent’s dream: having their children sail into adulthood as independent, successful people.

However, that goal is not achieved overnight. And it does not only depend on the career they pursue or the degrees they obtain. It is more related to how a child can assume adulthood responsibilities with the required maturity that will allow them to achieve their goals, be self-sufficient, resilient and eventually, why not, care for their parents’ interests in their golden years.

“Adulthood is achieved when the person differentiates the locus of internal and external control, when he assumes responsibility for his actions and their consequences. Dr. Jean Piaget in his research on the Development of Intelligence explained that maturity is the balance between the assimilation of the external world to the person and the accommodation of the person to the external world” explained psychologist Marisol Pulgar.

Raising a responsible child, from the very beginning puts them in the right path to achieve their adult age well prepared and ready to take over their place in society.

And parents have to be role models for that behavior.

SOWING THE SEEDS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Ben Sasse, Junior Senator from Nebraska and parent of three daughters describes an interesting approach on sowing the seeds for raising responsible, independent children on his book “The Vanishing of the American Adult”. He developed the book based on his observations on the lack of maturity on young adults in their early 20’s, compared to previous generations.

In 2015 the Urban Dictionary coined the term “Adulting” as an ironic verb to suggest that a person, mostly millennials, was embracing responsibilities related to adulthood, such as purchasing his own groceries, paying bills on time or performing household chores.

In a time and age when many young adults finish college and move back home with their parents, instead of living on their own, this “Adulting” term gains relevance because, as Sasse states on his book, “independent adulthood is no longer the norm for this generation”.

Acting as responsible adults becomes the exception and not the rule.

In Latin American countries most children live with their parents until they graduate and marry, honoring that old notion that “ladies should not leave their parents’ house until they move with their husbands, and gentlemen are taken care of first by their mothers and later by their wives”. For those first or second generation HispanicAmericans the cultural shock of having their children move away for college is tremendous, and many children find themselves not ready to handle the responsibilities of living alone because of their upbringing. However, this situation nowadays occurs to millions of young adults, regardless of their origins and cultural backgrounds;

“Adulting” becomes a nightmare for all of them.

Sasse explains that “A great many factors have contributed to this shift toward perpetual adolescence. […]The list of culprits includes our incredible wealth and the creature comforts to which our children are accustomed; our reluctance to expose young people to the demands of real work; and the hostage-taking hold that computers and mobile devices have on adolescent attention.”

He proposes an educational approach for parents that include five areas: resisting the temptation to fulfill all your child’s needs, teaching them to differentiate ‘needs’ from ‘wants’; instilling the importance of performing “meaningful work” as a source of learning about accomplishment, ethic, service and humility; promoting intergenerational socialization, to foster compassion, responsibility and perspective; and promoting educational travelling and expanded literacy, to encourage broad cultural knowledge, appreciation for their surroundings, respect for diversity and traditions, and tolerance.

It is a process that starts at an early age, when parents train their children giving them responsibilities such as picking up their own toys, fixing their bed or setting up the table, and later on doing the dishes at dinner, doing their own laundry or managing their allowance. Those “baby steps” go a long way on getting them ready for the challenges of living on their own and surviving the experience.

Economic issues and high amounts of student loan debts have in recent years caused that perfectly ready adults move back with their parents after college, delaying the independent adult phase until they find a good job and get on their own two feet, which would allow them to fulfill their financial responsibilities without parental support. It is a matter of time and parents can help them cope with the situation by creating some sort of “roommate agreement”, where rules of coexistence and expectations are established. It would be the last phase of the “Adulthood readiness” process.

BELIEVE IN THE PRODUCT

It has been discovered that the brain of young adults is still developing, and the white matter on their frontal lobes is still being laid down, as explains Dr. Frances Jensen on her book “The teenage brain”.

As the brain evolves from teenager to young adult, people around 20-25 years still have to develop and mature their sense of accountability, communications skills, work ethic, organization abilities and self-confidence, all those characteristics that are needed for an adult to embrace their responsibilities and being successful.

If parents take the time at each stage of development to pay attention to their children’s abilities, become role models and start fostering their self-confidence from the

very beginning, instructing them on the consequences of their decisions, encouraging them to be honest, trustworthy and reliable, when the time comes for them to fly the nest they will be ready to take responsibility of their lives.

Maybe the final advice for parents would be to “Believe in the product”, because children are the result and the reflection of the experiences they have seen and lived mainly at home. Supporting them in their decisions, listening to their doubts and worries and providing them guidance, gives them a sense of self-worth that allows them to embrace “Adulting” with joy and not with fear.

There is no recipe for good parenting; only following your instincts and most of all loving your children; it will give them the tools needed to thrive in the broad, wide world.

El proceso de criar hijos independientes

l sueño de todo padre es que sus hijos lleguen a la edad adulta como personas independientes y exitosas.

Sin embargo, ese objetivo no se logra de la noche a la mañana ni depende de la carrera o títulos que obtengan. Está más relacionado con la forma en que los hijos puedan asumir las responsabilidades de la edad adulta con la madurez requerida que les permita alcanzar sus metas, ser autosuficientes, persistentes; que hagan su vida y eventualmente, por qué no, puedan velar por los intereses de sus padres en sus años dorados.

“La edad adulta se logra cuando la persona diferencia el ‘locus de control interno’ del externo, cuando asume la responsabilidad por sus acciones y sus consecuencias. El Dr. Jean Piaget en su investigación sobre el Desarrollo de la Inteligencia explicó que la madurez es el equilibrio entre la asimilación del mundo externo a la persona y la acomodación de la persona al mundo exterior” explicó la psicólogo Marisol Pulgar.

La crianza de un niño responsable, desde el principio, los pone en el camino correcto para llegar preparados a la adultez, dispuestos a asumir su lugar en la sociedad.

Y los padres tienen que ser modelos a seguir para ese comportamiento.

SEMBRANDO LAS SEMILLAS DE LA RESPONSABILIDAD

Ben Sasse, Senador de Nebraska y padre de tres hijas, describe un enfoque interesante sobre cómo sembrar las semillas para criar hijos responsables e independientes en su libro “La desaparición del adulto estadounidense”. Él desarrolló el libro basado en sus observaciones sobre la falta de madurez de los adultos jóvenes alrededor de los 20-25 años, en comparación con las generaciones anteriores.

En el año 2015 el Diccionario Urbano acuñó el término “Adulting” como un verbo irónico para sugerir que una persona, particularmente un Millenial, estaba asumiendo responsabilidades relacionadas con la edad adulta, como comprar sus víveres, pagar cuentas a tiempo o realizar tareas domésticas.

En una época en que muchos jóvenes terminan la universidad y regresan a casa con sus padres, este término “Adulting” gana relevancia porque, como Sasse afirma en su libro, “la adultez independiente ya no es la norma para esta generación”. Actuar como adultos responsables se ha convertido en la excepción y no en la regla en muchos casos.

En los países latinoamericanos la mayoría de los hijos viven con sus padres hasta que se gradúan y se casan, honrando esa vieja noción de que “las señoritas están

Es un proceso que comienza a una edad temprana, cuando los padres entrenan a sus hijos dándoles responsabilidades tales como recoger sus propios juguetes, arreglar su cama o poner la mesa, y luego lavar los platos en la cena, lavar su ropa o administrar su mesada. Esas etapas los preparan a la larga para enfrentar los desafíos de la vida y sobrevivir la experiencia.

Las elevadas cantidades de deudas de préstamos estudiantiles han hecho que adultos perfectamente listos regresen con sus padres después de la universidad, retrasando la fase de independencia hasta que encuentren un buen trabajo y puedan asumir sus responsabilidades financieras. Es cuestión de tiempo y los padres pueden ayudarles a hacer frente a la situación mediante la creación de algún tipo de “acuerdo de convivencia”, estableciendo reglas y expectativas mutuas. Esa sería la última fase del proceso de “preparación para la edad adulta”.

Sin embargo, esta situación se da hoy en día en millones de adultos jóvenes, independientemente de sus orígenes y antecedentes culturales; “Adulting” se convierte en una pesadilla para ellos.

Sasse explica que “un gran número de factores han contribuido a este cambio hacia la adolescencia perpetua. [...] La lista incluye el bienestar y las comodidades que nuestros niños están acostumbrados; nuestra renuencia a exponer a los jóvenes a las exigencias de un trabajo real; y la influencia que las computadoras y los dispositivos móviles tienen en la atención de los adolescentes”.

Propone un enfoque educativo para los padres que incluye cinco áreas: resistir la tentación de satisfacer todas las necesidades de su hijo, enseñándoles a diferenciarlas de los deseos; inculcar la importancia del trabajo como fuente de aprendizaje sobre el logro, la ética, el servicio y la humildad; promover la socialización intergeneracional, para fomentar la compasión, la responsabilidad y la perspectiva; y promover viajes educativos, la lectura y cultura general, para fomentar una educación integral, el aprecio por el entorno, y el respeto por la diversidad, las tradiciones y la tolerancia.

Se ha descubierto que el cerebro de los jóvenes continúa en desarrollo en los 20s, pues la materia blanca en sus lóbulos frontales todavía se está estableciendo, como explica la Dra. Frances Jensen en su libro “El cerebro adolescente”.

A medida que el cerebro evoluciona de adolescente a adulto joven, la gente alrededor de 20-25 años todavía tiene que madurar su sentido de responsabilidad, habilidades de comunicación, ética de trabajo, capacidad de organización y confianza en sí mismo, todas esas características que son necesarias para que un adulto asuma exitosamente sus responsabilidades.

Si los padres toman el tiempo en cada etapa del desarrollo para prestar atención a las habilidades de sus hijos, modelan conductas adecuadas y comienzan a fomentarles la confianza en sí mismos, instruyéndoles sobre las consecuencias de sus decisiones, animándoles a ser honestos y confiables, cuando llegue el momento estarán listos para asumir la responsabilidad de sus propias vidas.

What’s the first step in the college process?

igh school seniors are in the full thrust of college preparations right now. The Common Application opened August 1st, the FAFSA opens October 1st, and if you are applying to college via an early application option, the deadline could be as early as November 1st. What is the first thing you need to know before you start the process? Well, what do you want to study - what do you want to be when you graduate?

Recently, a student answered that question by telling me that she wasn’t sure and was going to explore her options by taking different courses when she got to college. That sounds like a wonderful and fun option for students. However, in today’s reality- it is not feasible. College is expensive. You want to get into college, get as much credit for your advanced courses in high school (such as AP, IB, AICE, Dual Enrollment) and graduate in four years or less so that you can start working or pursue a graduate degree. Therefore, you need to know exactly what courses to take when you start college. You simply can’t afford to “explore” when you get to college. Keep in mind, student financial aid only pays for those courses that are directly related to your major or that can count as electives.

When I have students who are simply unsure of what they want to do- I refer the student to a vocational assessment advisor. My colleague Margherita Laudi, is a psychologist who focuses on vocational assessment for high school students provides students a detailed assessment of their interests, abilities, limitations, personality traits, and even takes into consideration the family’s financial status to then provide a comparative analysis of the career options that best fits the student.

She explains to the student what the particular field of work is all about, labor demand, salaries, colleges that offer the major, and other key pieces of information.

The evaluation is done in 2 hours and the results are delivered immediately. Laudi explains that choosing a career is one of the most important decisions a student can make and yet it occurs when a young person begins to have important physical, social and emotional change. Students begin to develop the ability to choose - their sexual identity, their group of friends, hobbies, what career they are going to study – but many of them do not know what their skills are or like so many different things, or worse - they do not like anything in particular.

Laudi believes that preparing to enter college is a complex job which goes beyond choosing the educational institution and that after 27 years of experience in the education, that the most important

step you can take is to identify the area you will like best based on your skill and personality traits to then determine which university to apply to. Once a desired career is identified, it is easier to guide a student on what kind of courses to choose in high school or what type of volunteering will help their college application.

She indicates that while it is true that studying in a good school is important, it is much more important to choose that career is best suited for you so that you will get the job success that you have worked so hard for.

Once student has a least an idea of what they would like to study in college, then at that point we can determine what colleges to look into. In the United States there are college that are recognized for their business, medical, education, science, or law programs. If you know what field you want to study- well, now you can make a list of schools. Part of the decision on which schools to put on the list also includes if you want to attend a college in or out of state; big or small campus; warm or cold climate; near a big city or not; extracurricular activities such as sports or clubs; and also the curriculum of their program.

Then, the list can be made shorter by visiting the actual campuses and deciding if you as the student really feel that you will fit in and be happy at that particular school for four years. The final list is now based on how well you can meet admissions requirements. Review specifically the GPA and test score requirements. If you meet those numbers or

believe that you can by the admissions deadline, then apply to those schools. If you cannot- then you need to be realistic and eliminate them. But the process begins with knowing what you want to study in college. You don’t need to be as specific as, “I want to be a pediatric neurosurgeon” but if you can narrow it down to “medicine…maybe working with children”, then your task of picking colleges is much easier.

If you don’t want to use a vocational advisor, then encourage your student to do their “exploring” during their high school years. They can try to pick up different electives; explore careers through part-time jobs or summer internships; try a variety of extra-curricular activities; and they can speak to as many people as possible about careers they have chosen. As parents, you can point out to them the activities that you see that they enjoy and help them research how to pursue their interests as a college major.

In high school I had a friend who was a very gifted artist. We were always amazed at the drawings and paintings she would display at school. However, she also loved science – specifically biology. With the help of her parents she was able to go to college and become a Medical Illustrator. She was able to join both of her passions into a career that she loves. Her drawings can now be found in medical books or you’ll see her in court explaining how something happened in a victim’s body via her illustrations. Remember, invest in an education that you truly enjoy because it will pay off for the rest of your life.

Misunderstandings and Misconceptions about Food Allergies

T

he following is a letter from a person suffering from what they believe might be allergies to food.

Below is the letter and my response. I believe this question and response may be quite helpful to those suffering from symptoms they believe are caused by food allergies.

LETTER:

I was very excited to run across your web site, especially when I saw the mention of a food allergy specialist in your list of doctors. I am having very bad allergies with food and it is only getting worse. I can no longer eat at restaurants without having a reaction. I am also having reactions at home intermittently even though I am carefully watching food ingredients. It’s getting to the point where I no longer feel safe eating anything. I am currently taking shots for pollen and have been for two years, but it doesn’t appear to be helping.

I called up to find out more about your service and the receptionist told me you only test for food allergies, you don’t treat them. I was extremely disappointed to hear this.

If you do not treat food allergies, why do you list that you have a doctor with an expertise in them at your web site? This is very confusing advertising. Is there anything you do for food allergy sufferers besides test for what foods to avoid?

First, it is very important to categorize food reactions.

Bad reactions to food include both allergic and nonallergic reactions. True allergic reactions to a food are typically immediate, can be life threatening, and involve a specific immune system response. Skin or serum testing can measure this immune response (specific-IgE to foods).

Non-allergic reactions to foods, other than food poisoning, can be simply characterized as food intolerance. These do not involve the immune system at all, so any type of “allergy” testing is irrelevant. An example of this is milk/lactose intolerance, which can cause significant abdominal discomfort since the person doesn’t have an enzyme to break down the milk sugar.

There are likely many other forms of intolerance which most people describe as “that food doesn’t agree with me.” I always tell patients that I don’t pretend to know everything about bad reactions to food, but “I don’t make stuff up.” Many patients come to our office with testing results that have no scientific or medical evidence to back up their use. I tell them that these tests, which they usually had to pay out of pocket for since insurance won’t cover them, are of no real medical value.

Sometimes, a “food allergy” turns out to be a gastrointestinal condition such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome. This is why I would recommend that you tell your Internist or Family Practice doctor about these symptoms, because it could represent another medical problem.

Until recently, there was no scientifically proven way to treat true food allergies other than avoidance and having emergency epinephrine auto-injectors on hand for severe allergic symptoms (current limited studies on food allergy treatment will be discussed below). Most people have allergies to one or a small number of foods (e.g. hives or wheezing after eating peanuts or shrimp), so this approach is usually successful.

An old allergist’s adage is that the longer the list of foods that the patient says they are allergic to, the more likely they allergic to no foods at all.

Most of the time, when people believe they are allergic to a great number of foods, it turns out that their symptoms or rashes are unrelated to food. If you are having frequent random “reactions,” you might assume it must have been the last thing you ate. This is a logical thought to have if the symptoms resemble a true allergic reaction. We have people coming in all the time with chronic hives, and 8095% of the time they have no food allergies. I believe you are suffering a great deal, but it may not be allergies at all.

The main point being, if you are always itchy, you are always going to want to blame it on something you are eating. Think about it – during an average day, you eat or drink something every few hours. It is just human nature to blame the rashes on food. However, many people have itchy rashes due to a skin condition, especially atopic dermatitis (eczema). Incidentally, an allergist or dermatologist can prescribe anti-inflammatory creams that can successfully treat itchy rashes.

I should also mention that medical science doesn’t

have a very good understanding of food allergy in general. We understand IgE-mediated allergy very well (e.g. immediate hives after eating walnuts). We have also come to understand that food allergies are not an important cause of atopic dermatitis, even though many children with this condition have positive food tests.

There are also well-described allergic syndromes such as milk-induced colitis in children. However, there are probably other food-induced allergic syndromes that have not been scientifically worked out.

I mentioned above that there are some studies going on regarding the treatment of food allergy. These limited studies are looking at desensitizing subjects with only IgE-mediated reactions to foods, reactions that include hives or wheezing immediately after food ingestion. Most of these studies are on egg, milk, and peanut. There are a handful of private allergy doctors across the country that are doing oral desensitization in their office, but the majority of allergists are waiting for approved treatment kits to be approved by the FDA. Other than the specific desensitization protocols I mentioned above, you may find practitioners of various sorts stating that they will treat your food allergy. Many of these people are practicing alternative or complementary medicine that is not scientifically validated. I do believe alternative and complementary medicine have a place, but a prospective patient should go in with their eyes open.

When people have symptoms as you have, we typically do some testing to make sure we aren’t missing a true food allergy. Then, we treat the symptoms with medications and have the patients keep a food diary to see which foods might be causing non-allergic reactions.

We typically have great success with this approach, with the patient having to avoid few, if any, foods and having a good healthy diet.

We as Allergy/Immunolgists have all had specialized training in food allergies, so we are “food allergy specialists.” Doctors in our specialty generally stick to conventional, scientific, evidence-based medicine.

We feel this is a prudent approach for a person in your situation.

Florida Karate Clubs abrió sus puertas en Doral y adultos en el maravilloso mundo del karate, llegando a moldear atletas de alta competencia, encontrándose entre ellos la joven atleta Zoë Meszaro, atleta del año 2017 y actualmente la #1 en el ranking mundial, así como varios de los miembros del equipo de Estados Unidos.

En el acto de inauguración, acudieron importantes personalidades del medio tales como el Maestro Shoko Sato, Presidente de la Federación Panamericana de Karate Do Shitoryu, y el Alcalde de la Ciudad del Doral,

Juan Carlos Bermudez, quienes junto al Sensei Luis Sánchez y a su esposa, la abogada Michelle Sánchez, hicieron los honores al cortar la cinta inaugural ante atletas, amigos y familia que dijeron presente, y dar iniciación a las magníficas exhibiciones de karate efectuadas por los estudiantes del Dojo y un ameno compartir!! El sábado 23 de septiembre, tuvo lugar la celebración de la gran apertura de la nueva escuela de Karate Do en la conveniente locación de la ciudad del Doral.

Esta escuela junto a las ubicadas en el condado de Broward y en el colegio Divine Savior Academy, conforman la red de escuelas de karate Do, estilo Shitoryu de nombre Florida Karate Clubs.

El Sensei Luis Sánchez, cinta negra 5to Dan, es quien lleva la batuta de estas escuelas y ha dedicado gran parte de su vida a la formación de niños, jóvenes

Doral Shows Love for Brazil with Independence Celebration!

Fernanda Frangetto. The art will be on display for the public to experience at the Doral Government Center (1st floor) on weekdays from 8:30am- 4:30pm until October 11th.

Ms. Frangetto, a Doral resident and artist, unveiled her most recent an art installation “Band” at the event, and is also donating a commemorative trophy creation in honor of the fight against cancer for the American Cancer Society’s Doral 2017 Relay for Life event happening on November 18th, in Downtown Doral Park.

Event attendees were moving and grooving thanks to the Beatriz Malnic Trio, who played typical Bossa

nova from Brazil. Youth participation was not lacking with the American and Brazilian anthems performed

by Ronald Reagan – Doral Senior High students, Jade Santos and Genesis Guevara with Giovanna Basso, respectively. To top it all off, delicious hors d’oeuvre like Salpicão, Pastelzinho de Carne and Pão-dequeijo, transported you to the exotic country.

The Government Center came alive on September 26, 2017, with the Doral Heart Brazil event, highlighting Brazil’s rich culture. The reception and art exhibit proudly celebrated Brazil’s Independence Anniversary of 195 years. For the special occasion, Doral’s Mayor and Councilmembers presented Ambassador Adalnio Senna Ganem, Consul General of Brazil, with a Proclamation for Brazil Day 2017.
