Facts and Figures

Largest autonomous housing and cultural project in Austria

• 110 members • 210 residents (adults, children, teenager) • 112 flats („boxes“) • assisted living apartments for disabled people, • socio-educational flat, sharing community, • flats for refugees.

- VIL acts as the owner, builder, caretaker and rental agency of the housing complex, - members live in flats and their rights and obligations are detailed in an internal contract (similar cooperative), - members pay basic and individual contribution to costs , towards the repayment of the building loan and to the resident administration costs, - when moving out, members return the flat to the association, - by using the Austrian legal term „Wohnheim“ for communal housing, special support could be claimed from the Vienna City council. Aims of the Association Participatory democracy and self-administration - jointly developing: planning, building and running the project - living together and open minded for inividual arrangements (singles, families, flat sharing communities,‌) - living together without peer pressure (all can share but no one has to) - integration of people with special needs and socially disadvantaged groups


Ecological Aspects optimum use of energy, eco-friendly electricity, Composting, solar power, working group „carbon footprints“

Social Aspects -

playground, common yards, roof garden, library (with internet access), large kitchen, guest apartment, „flex-boxes“ (flats with limited contracts) - refugee-boxes - socio-educational flat for children in familial troubles - boxes for handicaped people


Administration - general assembly - 2 general meetings per year - extraordinary meetings with special issues - managing board with voluntary representatives - voluntary work groups - 2 professional executive directors - 20 employees Š Robert Kniefatz


Voluntary Work  members are actively engaged in all areas of communal life  more than 25 initiatives and work groups (e.g. carbon footprints, garden, library, bathing house, cooking,...)  approx. 80 persons work in initiatives and groups  5.500 hours per year = 687 days (8 h/d)


Public Activities - event hall (contemporary music, theater for kids, cabaret, house-ball,...) - seminar room, - restaurant (biological, vegetarian, also providing kindergarten, event hall, seminar room), - kindergarten (approx. 60 kids, German, Turkish, Syrian, Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian mother tongue, - bathing house (semi-public, operated as club, open for members 24 hours per day, baby swimming)
