never sleeps Located on the south central coast of Vietnam, Nha Trang is known as the most popular beach destination for locals and international tourists. Beside the pristine and splendid beaches along with a number of high-end luxury complexes and resorts, Nha Trang also offers a vibrant and lively nightlife. p 85 travel enterprises receive annual tourism awards
Eighty-five leading travel enterprises were honored at the Vietnam Tourism Awards 2018 organized on July 9 in Hanoi by the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism and the Vietnam Tourism Association. Launched in October 2017, the contest aimed to highlight the beauty of Vietnam and its best tourism assets. The most important category includes businesses which have contributed to the development of the Vietnamese tourism industry, including Vinpearl Company, Sun Group, Mường Thanh Hospitality, FLC Group and Thiên Minh Group. Leading destinations include Hạ Long Bay, Sun World Ba Na Hills, Thần Tài Hot Spring Park, Vinpearl Nha Trang and Vinpearl Phú Quốc. Leading golf courses include the Bluffs Hồ Tràm Strip Vũng Tàu, Bà Nà Hill Golf Club, BRG Đà Nẵng Golf Resort, Montgomerie Links Đà Nẵng, and Laguna Langco Golf Club ●
p Vietnam Airlines announces flight price hike following Vietjet Air and Jetstar Pacific
Vietnam Airlines will start collecting fees for system maintenance in order to improve the management of its customer database. The applied fee for short domestic routes is VND80,000 (USD3.48) and VND150,000 for domestic routes above 850km. The fee for international routes is USD7. The fee is exempted for business class, elite class and club economy class. Meanwhile, to encourage more online bookings Vietnam Airlines will scrap the ticket charges for web purchases, which is VND50,000 (USD2) for domestic routes and USD7 for international routes. Other fees were also increased including airport, cancellation and change fees ●

p Ha Long City to host ASEAN Tourism Forum 2019
ATF 2019, one of the top events of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), will be held from January 14-18 to boost tourism co-operation and development. With the theme "ASEAN – The Power of One", it is expected to underline the strength and beauty of the 10 ASEAN nations working toward a prosperous, sustainable and inclusive development goal. A wide range of activities will be held including formal meetings between officials of ASEAN National Tourism Organization and meetings between ASEAN tourism ministers and their counterparts from China, Japan, South Korea and India. This is the second time Vietnam has hosted the event ●
p Pho is on the list of world’s best cheap eats
UK-based travel site Rough Guides has included Vietnam’s iconic dish – Pho as one of the world’s 15 best foods that are easy on a globetrotter’s pocket. Pho, which came in 6th on the list, contains flat, soft rice noodles served in a fragrant beef or chicken broth and flavored with different condiments. It is served with chicken or beef, shallots, chilli and lemon to taste. The soup originated in Hanoi and was brought to the South where people modified the dish to become a different version. ●
p Ho Chi Minh City featured in Lonely Planet’s 2018 Best in Asia list
Ho Chi Minh City has been listed among Asia’s 10 best destinations to visit in the year ahead by global travel guidebook publisher Lonely Planet, which revealed its 2018 ‘Best in Asia’ list on July 10, 2018. For this third edition of the annual list, Lonely Planet’s in-house Asia experts have named the “eclectic” and “vibrant” city of Busan in South Korea as the number one destination, while the jeweled architecture and ancient cities of Uzbekistan are in second place. In third comes Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City, “a super city that somehow keeps getting cooler.” Other destinations featured in this year’s Best in Asia list include Western Ghats (India), Nagasaki (Japan), Chiang Mai (Thailand), Lumbini (Nepal), etc ●
p Hanoi selected to host SEA Games 31
The Government has approved the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism’s proposal to hold the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31) and the 11th ASEAN Para Games (Para Games 11) in Vietnam in 2021. On July 10th, the Cabinet assigned Hanoi as the host city, after successfully holding the SEA Games 22 in 2003, the Asian Indoor Games in 2009 and several other international sporting events. Hosting the events is both the responsibility and honor of Vietnam as a constructive member of ASEAN, adding it is also a chance to promote Vietnam and its people ●
p Two caves open to visitors in national park home to Vietnam's Son Doong
For tourists who love cave adventure, the north-central Vietnamese province of Quang Binh, home to the world-renowned Son Doong Cave, now offers more to explore as two local caverns have been officially opened to visitors. Oxalis, the exclusive operator of exploration tours to the world’s biggest cave of Son Doong, has been allowed to take tourists to the Va and Nuoc Nut caves in Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park during a pilot period. The new expedition tour, “Different Experiences,” is available from July to the end of August 2018, as announced by the Quang Binh administration on July 4th ●
p Dak Nong to hold the first Viet Nam Brocade Culture Festival 2018
From December 27 – 30, 2018, the first Vietnam Brocade Culture Festival will be held in Gia Nghia Town, Dak Nong Province to celebrate the 15th founding anniversary of the central highlands’ province (Jan 1, 2004 – 2019). The festival aims to preserve and promote cultural values, traditional costumes of ethnic people in Dak Nong in particular and Vietnam in general, and to introduce tourism potentials and cultural heritage values in Dak Nong Province. It will also be an opportunity for ethnic people across the country to exchange experiences and strengthen solidarity and national pride through a variety of activities such as a street festival, gastronomy space, brocade fashion show, international balloon festival, and more ●

p Vietnamese Government approves establishment of Bamboo Airways
More than one year after applying for a business license, domestic real estate giant FLC Group’s Bamboo Airways airline has been officially granted an aviation business license for the duration of 50 years from July 9, 2018. FLC stated that Bamboo Airways will focus on international routes from Northeast Asia, such as Japan, South Korea, and China, to Vietnamese tourist destinations in Quy Nhon, Quang Ninh, Thanh Hoa, and Khanh Hoa's Nha Trang. In the future, the airline will expand routes to the the US and Europe. Domestic routes are also developed including Thanh Hoa-Quy Nhon, Thanh Hoa-Phu Quoc, and Thanh Hoa-Nha Trang ●
p National paragliding contest kicks off in Quang Ninh A paragliding contest was opened in the Hoanh Bo mountains district of Northern Quang Ninh province on July 14th and lasted for 2 days as part of the National Tourism Year 2018. The event was co-organized by the Vietnam Sports Administration and the provincial Department of Culture and Sports, and attracted the participation of 81 paragliders from 9 clubs nationwide. This event aims to affirm the potential and advantages of Hoanh Bo district for adventure sports and tourism and to attract investors in local tourism projects. In the first 5 months, the province served more 7 million visitors including 2.5 million foreigners ●

Vietnam sees more global hotel brands
According to the Vietnam Administration of Tourism, Vietnam has witnessed an influx of international hotel brands and hotel management companies in the last few years. There has been a particularly big jump this year with recent announcements by Mandarin Oriental and Movenpick in HCM City and Best Western Premier in Quang Binh and Long Hai. There have also been new brands entering the market in the last three years, including Ozo and X2 Vibe (Hội An), Hilton’s Double Tree (Ha Long, Vung Tau and Ha Noi), Four Seasons (Quang Nam and Ha Noi), Oakwood (HCM City), Glow (Da Nang), and Mai House (HCM City) ●

p Swiss airline launches new routes to Vietnam
Leading Swiss carrier Edelweiss has announced the start of a bi-weekly service between Ho Chi Minh City and Zurich starting on November 15th, 2018. The flights will be operated on the Airbus A340-300 aircraft with a capacity of 314 passengers. The flight will leave Ho Chi Minh City on Tuesdays and Fridays. This new route will reduce travel time and promote trade & tourism between the two nations. Edelweiss hopes to carry 10,500 visitors from Switzerland to Ho Chi Minh City every year. ●

04 Binh Ba Island
Binh Ba is a small and pristine island in Cam Binh commune measuring only 3km2. Located 15 km from the mainland, tourists have to take a one hour boat ride from Da Bac port to reach Binh Ba. There are many attractive beaches in Binh Ba, especially the Bai Chuong, Bai Nom and Bai Nha Cu beaches. Bai Nom is located near a residential area, between two mountains so it is very peaceful, suitable for beach and water activities. On the other hand, Bai Chuong is a perfect spot for snorkeling and observing coral reefs and ocean creatures. THE Great White Shark Leisure & Travel had an exclusive interview with the Golf Legend – Greg Norman about his recently opened golf course in Cam Ranh
Please tell us about your new course in Cam Ranh?
There are many things I would consider unique about our course in Cam Ranh, but the two that stand out the most are the magnitude of the site and the location. Several holes have amazing views of the ocean or other natural coastal features -and there’s not a tree on site. It’s pretty awe inspiring when you stand on an elevated tee box, fairway or green and see the beauty of what’s around you. It’s hard to imagine that such a magnificent golf course is just 5 kilometers from the runway of an international airport, but that’s exactly what we have in Cam Ranh.
What do you think about the potential of Khanh Hoa's golf tourism?
Having been active since the early 2000’s in Vietnam, I’ve obviously seen a lot of growth in the country. I see a tremendous amount of potential for this corridor, especially where golf is concerned. Khanh Hoa has a great 46 Leisure & Travel Aug.2018
deal of quality infrastructure in place and seems to be expanding its tourism base internationally, so it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see more courses developed there as the demand for golf increases.
What do you think about Mr. Le Van Kiem on choosing this land to build the course?
Chairman Kiem allowed us to route 27 holes of golf on the site before any other planning was done, so we were able to incorporate some spectacular features into the layout. The majority of dune formations along the coast of Cam Ranh are broad and more gradually undulating than other parts of Vietnam. We took extreme care in laying out the course to ensure that golfers can take in the entire coastal experience as they play their round. It’s a very a special piece of property and I commend Chairman Kiem for having the vision to build this mega project in such an amazing setting. It will certainly raise the bar for golf resorts in Southeast Asia. Aug.2018 Leisure & Travel 47

What inspired you to be in this field? How many courses have you designed in the world?
We now have 103 courses open for play throughout the world and another 22 in planning and development. For me personally, it was somewhat of a natural progression into golf course design from my years as a professional golfer. But none had an effect on me as much as the courses back home in the Sandbelt of Melbourne Australia - Royal Melbourne and Kingston Heath Golf Clubs. Dr. Alister Mackenzie designed both courses and I actually based much of my design philosophy on the same principles when I decided to start my golf course design business back in 1987 ●

✒Cam Ranh에 새롭게 연 골프 코스에 대해 소개한다면? -많은 부분에서 특히 애착이 가지만, 그중에서도 시야를 가리는 장애물 없이 바다를 배경으로 시원하게 펼쳐지는 뛰어난 경치를 꼽고 싶다. 티박스에 올랐을 때, 페어웨이에 도착했을 때, 그린에 이르렀을 때 저마다 펼쳐지는 대자연에 압도됨을 느낄 수 있다. 이렇게 웅장한 골프 코스가 공항 활주로에서 불과 5km밖에 떨어져 있지 않다는 것 또한 놀라운 사실이다.
코스에 특별한 경치가 있는 지역도 함께 포함시킬 수 있었다. Cam Ranh해안을 따라 형성된 이 지역의 사구는 베트남 다른 지역의 사구에 비해 넓고 완만하다. 그래서 골퍼들이 이 해안의 특징을 온몸으로 느끼고 갈 수 있도록 코스를 설계할 때 특히 신경을 썼다. Mr. Le Van Kiem이 대단한 규모의 프로젝트를 실행하는 비전을 가지고 실행해 가는 것을 보고 나는 큰 감명을 받았다. 그의 프로젝트는 동남아시아의 골프 리조트에 대한 기대치를 높이는 데에 크게 일조할 것이다.
✒Khanh Hoa지역의 골프 여행 수요는 어떻게 예상하는가?
✒이 쪽에서 일을 하면서 어떤 것에서 영감을 많이 받는가?
- 베트남에서는 2000년대 초반부터 활동을 시작했기 때문에, 10년이 조금 넘는 시간 동안의 베트남의 발전상을 지켜봤다. 골프 역시 그 잠재력이 엄청나다. Khanh Hoa 지역은 뛰어난 인프라를 가지고있는 지역이기 때문에 국제적 관광객이 점점 늘어날 것이 확실하고, 그에 따라 골프여행 수요도 증가하면서 이 지역에 골프 코스가 더 생길 것으로 예상한다.
-현재까지 총 103개의 코스를 열었고, 앞으로 22개의 코스를 더 열 계획이다. 프로 골퍼에서 코스 디자인에 이르기까지 내 행보는 자연스럽게 이어져온것 같다. 투어때 경기를 치를때면 나는 골프 코스의 디자인을 연구했었던 것 같다. 그 코스에서 어떤점은 배우고 어떤 점은 개선시키면 좋을지를 생각했다. 하지만 호주 멜버른의 샌드벨트로 돌아가는 길에 있는Royal Melbourne과 Kingston Heath Golf Club 만큼 나에게 영향을 준 코스는 없었다. 사실 내 디자인 철학은 1987년 골프 코스 디자인을 시작하기로 마음을 먹었던 그 때와 크게 다르지 않고 두 코스를 디자인한Dr. Alister Mackenzie의 영향을 많이 받았다고 할 수 있다 ●

✒Ông có thể chia sẻ những điểm nổi bật của sân golf mới? ân golf mới có rất nhiều điểm đặc biệt nhưng 2 yếu tố nổi bật nhất là tầm vóc và địa thế. Một số hố golf ở đây tuyệt đẹp, có tầm nhìn ra đại dương với những cảnh quan đặc trưng của vùng ven biển. Không có cây trên thực địa, do đó sẽ thật cảm hứng khi bạn đứng trên tee, fairway hay green để chiêm ngưỡng toàn bộ vẻ đẹp xung quanh. Khó mà tưởng tượng rằng một sân golf tuyệt đẹp như vậy lại chỉ cách sân bay quốc tế có 5km.
✒Ông đánh giá thế nào về tiềm năng du lịch golf của Khánh Hòa? Tôi đã chứng kiến sự tăng trưởng rất mạnh mẽ ở đây, đặc biệt là trong lĩnh vực golf. Khánh Hoà có cơ sở hạ tầng tốt và đang mở rộng các cơ sở du lịch quốc tế. Vì thế, tôi sẽ không ngạc nhiên khi thấy ngày càng có nhiều sân golf khi nhu cầu golf tăng lên.

Several years ago, golfing in Japan remained unknown to the world especially Vietnamese golfers. Nowadays, with developments in technology and infrastructure, the mystery is about to be revealed. The doorway to great experience The Kobe Golf Club was established in 1903 in Kobe, marking the beginning of golf in Japan. Since the first golf course opened, the Japanese golfing community expanded quickly to 2,400 golf courses and 15 million golfers in 1995. It was a huge industry for not only golf courses but also other golf products and driving ranges. Golfing has made a significant contribution to the nation’s economic
growth over the years. Nevertheless, after the recession in 1993, the number of golfers decreased and didn’t seem to grow back. The number reached its bottom at 7 million golfers in 2012. The Australian golfer Caleb Jye Perry has become the champion of Vietnam Junior Open 2018 after defeating Hanako Kawasaki by 2 strokes in the final round. Perry shot 71, including 2 birdies on the first nine and 2 bogeys on the back nine in the final round to get to a 6 over 219. With the victory, Perry became the second foreigner to win a VJO (a total 3 events). For the first time, junior golfers from the North and South regions of Vietnam had a chance to compete head-to-head in Match play at the Junior Challenge Cup 2018. The event was held by Hanoi Golf Academy at the Long Thanh golf course from July 18th – 20th. Each team had 18 members and 1 captain (>18 years old, do not play). Both teams play 24 matches in 3 rounds. The first round includes 6 matches of 9 hole Four-ball, the second round includes 6 matches of 9 hole Foursome, and the third round includes 12 Single Matches. Golfers were not allowed to use their own caddie and only under-10 is allowed to use a golf cart ● Long Thanh golf course의 Hanoi Golf Academy가 주최한 첫 베트남 남북매치 유소년 골프대회가 7월 18 -20일에 열렸다. 18세 미만의 유소년 선수들로 구성된 각 팀은 18명의 선수와 1명의 감독으로 구성되었고 총 3라운드 24경기를 치뤘다. 첫날에는 6개의 매치가 9 홀동안 포볼 방식으로, 둘째날에는 포썸방식으로 6개의 매치가 9홀동안 치뤄졌으며, 셋째날에는 12개의 싱글매치가 치뤄졌다. 모든 골퍼는 캐디없이 경기를 진행했으며, 10세 이하의 선수는 골프카드 이용이 허락됐다 ●

On 7th July 2018, the Ho Chi Minh City Junior Open was held by the Ho Chi Minh Golf Association (SSGA) at Long Thanh Golf Course. This annual event is held nationally, and focuses on developing junior golf in Vietnam. By scoring 70, young golfer Tran Lam had won the tournament. Tran Minh Kien won the under-9 Division; Doan Uy won the under-12 Division; Nguyen Nhat Long won under-15 Division; Oh Seung Wan won under-18 Division; Joung Sun Mi won the girl’s 10-14 Division; Kim Yi Joon defeated Doan Xuan Khue Minh to win under-18 Division ● 지난 7월 7일 호치민 Long Thanh golf course에서 Ho Chi Minh Golf Association (SSGA)이 주최한 Ho Chi Minh City Junior Open이 열렸다. 이 대회는 베트남 주니어 골프를 성장시키기 위해 매년 열리는 전국 규모의 대회다. 이번 대회의 우승의 영광은 총 70타를 친 Tran Lam에게 돌아갔다. On 27th – 28th July 2018, Hanoi’s 2nd Golf Club Championship was held by Hanoi Golf Association at Long Bien Golf Course. This year, the GFS Group is the title sponsor of the newly named Hanoi’s 2nd Golf Club Championship – GFS Cup. In 2017, there were 27 clubs, and this year, the number rose to 34 clubs. The number of golfers for each club is also up from 8 to 12 (12 +4 reserve). The event has 2 rounds in which 6 members of each club will compete in each round using stroke play. The symphony of life Among many young Vietnamese contemporary painters, Dinh Thi Tham Poong is an artist with a style influenced by her ethnic roots and childhood in a remote northern mountainous region. Born in 1970 in Lai Chau province, Tham Poong is a mix of Thai and Muong heritage, two of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic minority groups. Her intricate, vivid and surreal paintings depict the close interrelationship between humans and nature. Details of the daily life of ethnic minority men and women, often dressed in their distinctive, colorful outfits, are presented along with magnificent landscapes, erasing the borders between humans and nature. “In my mind, everything has two halves,” says Tham Poong. “They link and intertwine with each other.” By Yen Vu

TREND art 베트남의 젊은 현대 화가인 Dinh Thi Tham Poong은 북부 산간 지방에서 보낸 유년 시절과 그녀의 인종적 뿌리로부터 영향을 받은 여류화가다. 1970년 베트남의 최북단 Lai Chau에서 태어난 그녀는 54개 소수민족 중 2개인 태국계와 muong 족의 혼혈이다. 그녀의 복잡하면서도 생생하고 초현실적인 그림들은 인간과 자연의 밀접한 상호관계를 묘사하고 있다. 웅장한 대자연 속의 독특하고 화려한 전통의상을 입은 소수 민족의 남녀의 일상생활을 묘사한 그림들은 자연과 인간의 그 경계를 허무는 듯하는 느낌을 준다. 모든 것은 양면을 가지고 있지만 정반대인 것만 같은 그 두 가지 점들 모두 결국엔 서로 연결되어 있으며 얽히고 설켜 있다는 것을 깨닫게 된다고 말하는 그녀에게 또 다른 철학이 담긴 작품이 빨리 나오길 기대해본다.
How did you come to painting?
I was born in the mountain region of Lai Chau with a Muong father and Thai mother. I have developed a love for painting since I was young. I would paint with anything in my hand. At that time, my dad worked at the provincial culture department so he encouraged me to draw what I observed. Thai culture has various activities including poetry, music, singing, worship, etc. which have inspired me a lot when growing up.
What makes your painting unique?
Nature and people played a vivid part in my childhood. Therefore, my paintings have an inseparable root in mountainous and cultural identities. That would make my works distinguishable. I think that everything in this universe has two aspects, between heaven and earth, the yin and yang, and even man and nature. Each and every individual intertwines and blends in with each other to create a symphony of life, full of lights, colors, sounds and spirits.

How long does it take to complete an artwork?
I often work on multiple paintings at- a same time due to my several states of emotions. I hang uncompleted paintings on the wall to watch, to think about, and even sleep with it. An artwork is completed slowly in a relaxing, no rushing fashion. Sometimes, I sit in front of my paintings for a long time, studying and finding the way to complete. Thus, I can’t define how long. It depends a lot on my feelings and emotions.
What inspires you the most?
I would say folk culture because it makes Vietnamese art different, compared to other countries. The folk culture of folk songs, lullabies, fairy tales, etc. is very beautiful, and gives people a deep feeling of relating.
Who are the people in your paintings?
Most of them are mountainous people, Hmong people, dressed in beautiful & colorful folklore costumes. For me, there is always a connection between man and nature. To survive, man needs to live in balance and in harmony with nature. I want my paintings to be surreal, both symbolic and decorative.
After a show in Hanoi, the owner of La Vong gallery in Hong Kong expressed interested in my paintings. Since then, he always takes my paintings to exhibitions in many Who are countries. Talking about the process of making the paper, I make four layers to create a thick material for my paintings. I want to create sharp, overlapping, interlaced, with high visual effects, generating a strange experience for the viewer. Previously, I used Japanese colors which are used to paint on kimonos due to its brightness. But recently, I use Vietnamese gold leaf paste to create a vivid effect, making the picture sparkle even in the dark.
How does painting work in your life?
Everything, not only a job, painting is my life. It is a corner of thought, emotion, where you can hide or express your soul.
What if one day there is no art?

Tranh của chị thấm đẫm nguồn gốc dân tộc nơi chị lớn lên. Thời thơ ấu của Thắm Poong ở vùng sâu vùng xa phía bắc của Lai Châu, được sinh ra bởi một người cha Mường và người mẹ Thái trắng, trong sự gần gũi với núi rừng thiên nhiên, cảm nhận được sự khác biệt của thời tiết, mùa trăng. Cuộc sống của Thắm rất đơn giản và tự do để ứng biến với những thay đổi trong thiên nhiên. Chính vì vậy, những bức tranh của chị độc đáo và có một sưc hút đặc biệt, mang yếu tố siêu thực và mô tả mối quan hệ gần gũi giữa con người và tự nhiên, theo cách vừa hoang dã vừa hiện đại. ừ nhỏ tôi đã yêu thích vẽ, tôi vẽ bằng tất cả những gì có trong tay. Hồi đó bố tôi làm ở sở Văn hóa tỉnh nên ông rất khuyến khích tôi vẽ lại những gì tôi quan sát được. Văn hóa Thái rất đậm đặc và những hoạt động thơ ca, âm nhạc, hát múa, cúng lễ đã thấm sâu vào tôi.
✒Điều gì tạo nên nét độc đáo trong tranh của Poong? Tôi lớn lên ở miền núi, rất gần với thiên nhiên và con người dân tộc, nên hội họa của tôi có một gốc rễ không thể tách rời với bản sắc văn hóa miền núi. Có lẽ điều đó đã làm nên nét khác lạ trong tranh của tôi. Tôi cho rằng mọi thứ trong vũ trụ này đều đan xen nhau, đó là đan xen của trời đất, của âm dương, đan xen giữa con người và thiên nhiên, giữa người này với người kia. Tất cả đều làm nên một bản giao hưởng cuộc sống tràn ngập ánh sáng, sắc màu, âm thanh và tâm hồn.
✒Làm thế nào mà tranh của Poong được nhiều phòng tranh quốc tế biết đến? Đồng chủ phòng phòng tranh Lã Vọng ở Hồng Kong qua một lần triển lãm ở Hà Nội đã quan tâm đến tranh của tôi. Từ đó đến nay, bà đã luôn đặt tranh và mang tranh của tôi đi triển lãm ở nhiều nước. Bà thích tranh của tôi vì lạ và cho biết tranh giấy Dó của
Việt Nam rất đặc biệt, chất liệu tự nhiên, được làm thủ công, không có axit nên rất bền. Ông cũng ấn tượng với kỹ thuật thể hiện màu nước trên giấy Dó của tôi.
✒Kỹ thuật đó là gì? Quá trình làm giấy Dó rất cầu kỳ, tôi thường phải đặt làm riêng. Thay vì dùng 1 tờ cho 1 bức vẽ tôi phải bồi 4 lớp tạo nên một lớp nền dày và vẽ rất nhiều lớp màu lên. Thông thường, các họa sĩ vẽ tranh giấy Dó theo phong cách loang màu, nhưng tôi thì lại muốn tạo hình sắc nét, chồng chéo, đan xen nhau, tạo nên hiệu ứng hình ảnh lạ với người xem. Trước đây, tôi dùng một chất liệu màu của Nhật hay vẽ trên kimono để tạo nên độ sáng tối của tranh, nhưng gần đây tôi dùng những miếng dán vàng lá của Việt Nam tạo hiệu ứng rất cao, bức tranh lấp lánh ngay cả khi ở trong bóng tối.
✒Mất bao lâu Poong hoàn thành một bức tranh? Tôi thường vẽ nhiều tranh một lúc, mỗi bức tôi lại có một cảm xúc riêng. Tranh đang vẽ dở tôi cứ treo lên, ngắm nó, nghĩ về nó và có khi ngủ với nó, và cứ vẽ từ từ, thư thái, có khi ngồi và ngắm rất lâu mới có thể hoàn thiện được thêm một chút, rất khó có thể định ra thời gian là bao lâu.
✒Điều gì truyền cảm hứng cho Poong nhiều nhất? Tôi nghĩ rằng đó là văn hóa dân gian, bởi chính nền văn hóa này khiến chúng ta khác biệt, hấp

dẫn so với các quốc gia khác. Đó là nền văn hóa trôi nổi, truyền khẩu, là những câu ca dao, lời hát ru, truyện cổ tích... rất đẹp, lóe sáng ở những thời khắc mà người ta cảm nhận sâu sắc về nó, và nó được lưu truyền lại trong một nhóm người, ở một vùng nhất định.
✒Những nhân vật trong tranh của Poong là gì? Đó là những nhân vật miền núi nơi tôi sinh ra. Đó là đồng bào Hmong ở xung quanh với trang phục rất đẹp, nhiều màu sắc lung linh. Những người nam, người nữ mộc mạc theo văn hóa dân gian. Với tôi, luôn tồn tại sự liên hệ giữa con người với thiên nhiên, để tồn
tại được con người cần phải ở trong nó, phải giữ sự cân bằng, giao hòa với nó. Tôi muốn tranh của tôi vừa siêu thực, vừa biểu trưng, vừa mang tính trang trí.
✒Đối tượng khách mua tranh của Poong là ai?
✒Nếu một ngày không còn hội họa thì sao? Tôi nghĩ, nếu không còn hội họa và nghệ thuật thì cuộc sống sẽ dừng lại, không còn lý do để tồn tại nữa. Bởi ánh sáng và màu sắc tạo nên hội họa, thiếu những yếu tố đó thì cuộc sống không còn ý nghĩa. ●
Đa phần là người nước ngoài, họ sống ở đây hoặc đến đây du lịch. Khách Việt cũng bắt đầu có nhưng không nhiều.
✒Hội họa đóng vai trò gì trong cuộc sống của Poong? Tất cả. Vừa là công việc, vừa là góc tư duy, cảm xúc, vừa như người bạn có thể tâm tình.

Quilling Art
Meet the young artist Ho Bao Tran and get to know her passion and creativity in quilling art. By Yen Vu

Quilling is a craft that anyone can learn, but to create works of high artistic value is not simple. The paper must be cut into 2mm thin strips, then rolled and formed into different designs. A remarkable aspect of this art is that the paper strips are put vertically, not laid on the background. This gives the design a threedimensional appearance, making the picture lively and unique. According to Tran, a 30x40 cm quill painting requires 5 to 7 days to complete, depending on the difficulty of the painting. They put the

aving graduated from the College of Fine Arts of Dong Nai with a focus in ceramics, Ho Bao Tran realized early-on that she was not really interested in what she studied. By accident, while browsing through some art websites, Tran’s eyes were caught by the art of quilling. She was truly fascinated by the magical color changes, and the meticulous, sophisticated, elegant way the strips of paper were rolled to form the beautiful quilled pictures. 72 Leisure & Travel Aug.2018
Tran's quilling artworks have become known to many customers by their uniqueness and creativity. Quilling art was first known around the 1200’s, but became a popular art form during the Renaissance (1500s - 1600s) when French and Italian nuns and monks used quilling to decorate book covers and religious items. The materials most commonly used are strips of paper trimmed from the gilded edges of books. These gilded paper strips are then rolled to create the quilled shapes.
In the 18th century, quilling became popular in Europe where gentle ladies of culture practiced the art. It was one of the few things ladies could do that was thought not too taxing for their minds or gentle dispositions. Quilling was also spread to America by immigrants, and the practice experienced ups and downs until this day. Until 10 years ago, quilling art was relatively unknown to most Vietnamese, as their art experiences had remained with traditional paintings and craft
sketch or print on paper, then roll the paper strips into circular or oval shape to match the content of the picture and use glue to adhere the paper strips. The use of colors in quilling is very limited compared to water coloring that can be mixed as desired. So, to have flexible color change in quilling and to create the desired colors, Tran does not use watercolor drawing on the surface of paper strips, but rather mixes up two strips of different colors to maintain her work of original quilling.
Through her passion and creativity, Tran's quilling art has gradually attracted customers both locally and internationally through social media like Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, etc. Foreigners often order animal pictures, greeting cards and decorations while local customers like flowers, landscape images, and more. Like any artist, Tran hopes her works become more popular inside and outside of Vietnam. She also plans to do a quilling art exhibition about endangered animal in Vietnam â—? 이들로부터 사랑을 받고 있다. 퀼링 아트는 1200년경 처음 알려졌으나, 1500~1600년경 르네상스 시대에 프랑스와 이탈리아의 수녀들과 수도사들이 책 커버를 장식하기 위해 퀼링을 이용하면서 인기를 끌었다. 가장 널리 사용된 재료는 책 가장자리를 다듬으면서 생긴 종이 조각들이었다. 이 금박이 붙어있는 얇은 종이 조각들을 둥글게 말아 붙여 그림을 만들었다. 그 후 18세기에 퀼링은 유럽에서 유명해졌는데, 명문가의 부녀자들 사이에서 번져나갔다. 그 당시의 부잣집의 여성들이 할 수 있는 몇 안되는 취미 거리 중 하나였고, 큰 부담없이 할 수 있으며 마음을 온화하게 가다듬을 수 있는 취미라고 여겼다. 그 후 퀼링은 이민자들에 의해 미국으로 퍼졌고, 오늘날까지 이어졌다. 10년 전만 해도 퀼링은 대부분의 베트남 사람들이 모르는 분야였다. 그러나 Ho Bao Tran은 그녀의 경력을 활용해 예술적 가치가 높은 작품들을 만들어 낼 수 있었다.
쉬운 듯 어려운 퀼링 아트의 세계
종이로 그리는 세상 Quilling Art 색종이로 세상을 그려 내는 그녀, Ho Bao Tran을 만나보았다.
예술이 된 종이 조각 Dong Nai 예술 대학에서 도자기를 전공했지만, Ho Bao Tran은 자신이 그 분야에는 그다지 관심이 많지 않다는 것을 깨달았다. 그 뒤로 우연히 미술 관련 사이트에서 퀼링을 접한 그녀는 퀼링이야 말로 정교하면서도 우아한 예술이라는 것을 깨달았다. 그녀만의 독특하고 창의적인 퀼링 작품은 이제 많은 74 Leisure & Travel Aug.2018
퀼링 아트는 누구나 배울 수 있는 쉬운 예술 작품의 속한다. 그러나 예술적 가치가 높은 작품을 만드는 것은 꽤 고도의 난이도를 요구한다. 종이는 2mm로 얇고 길게 잘라 말아 내어 종이를 수평이 아닌 수직으로 세워 놓기 때문에 그림이 3차원으로 생동감 있게 완성된다. Tran에 따르면 30x40cm의 그림을 완성 하는데 난이도에 따라 5~7일이 걸린다고 한다. 스케치를 한 종이에 종이 말은 것은 풀로 고정하는데, 물감보다 종이의 색이 제한적이지만 색상 표현을 위해 수채화로 색을 표현하는 대신 두 가지 색상의 종이로 섞어서 표현한다. 국내외 팬들로부터 많은 사랑을 받는 Tran 은 앞으로 베트남의 멸종 위기에 처한 동물을 주제로 한 전시회도 열 계획이라고 전했다. ●

Cơ duyên tình cờ năm trước, Bảo Trân tốt nghiệp cử nhân Cao đẳng tại trường Mỹ thuật Trang trí Đồng Nai khoa Gốm sứ, nhưng không tìm thấy sự đam mê. Tình cờ nhìn thấy những tác phẩm giấy xoắn trên mạng, Trân thật sự bị cuốn hút bởi sự biến đổi màu sắc kỳ diệu và sự uốn lượn uyển chuyển cũng như độ tỉ mỉ, tinh xảo và sang trọng của các chi tiết. Và giờ đây, những tác phẩm của Trân đã được nhiều người biết đến bởi sự độc đáo, với tính nghệ thuật cao. Tranh giấy xoắn có từ những năm 1200 nhưng phải đến thời kỳ Phục Hưng (năm 1500 - 1600) nghệ thuật này mới trở nên phổ biến khi những nữ tu người Pháp và
Ý sử dụng những viền rách mạ vàng trong các cuốn sách và lông ngỗng cuộn lại để trang trí cho các vật phẩm tôn giáo và tranh ảnh. Việc sử dụng lông ngỗng đã biến thành thuật ngữ tranh cuộn xoắn (chữ quill: nguyên nghĩa là lông ngỗng). Sau đó, đoàn người nhập cư đã mang nghệ thuật này du nhập vào nước Mỹ, trải qua nhiều giai đoạn thăng trầm để phát triển cho đến ngày nay. Cách đây hơn 10 năm, nghệ thuật giấy xoắn vẫn còn xa lạ với người Việt. Bảo Trân đã vận dụng những kiến thức mỹ thuật được học trong trường để áp dụng lên nghệ thuật mới này cũng như luyện cách điều khiển sợi giấy theo ý muốn để tạo nên những bức tranh sinh động, đẹp mắt. Nghệ thuật giấy xoắn Tuy không khó để học, nhưng để tạo ra được những tác phẩm có giá trị nghệ thuật cao không hề đơn giản. Giấy phải được cắt thành từng sợi 2mm. Sau đó, cuộn lại và tạo hình thành các thiết kế khác nhau. Điều duy nhất và đặc biệt của nghệ thuật này là sợi giấy đặt theo chiều đứng, vuông góc với măt phẳng, tạo hiệu ứng không gian ba chiều mang đến sự
sinh động và độc đáo. Mỗi tác phẩm kích thước 30x40 cm cần 5-7 ngày để hoàn thành, tùy thuộc độ khó dễ của bức tranh. Hình ảnh được in hoặc phác thảo trên giấy, sau đó cuộn những sợi giấy tạo thành hình tròn hay dài sao cho khớp với nội dung bức tranh và dùng keo dán để cố định. Để có độ chuyển màu uyển chuyển, Trân đã nghĩ ra cách kết hợp hai sợi giấy khác màu để tạo thành màu theo ý muốn chứ không dùng màu nước để tô lên bề mặt giấy, có như vậy tác phẩm mới thuần tuý là quilling. Các tác phẩm của Trân đã dần thu hút được khách hàng cả trong và ngoài nước thông qua việc quảng bá tác phẩm mới trên các trang mạng xã hội (Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram). Chủ đề ưa thích của khách nước ngoài thường về động vật, thiệp mừng, trong khi khách trong nước chuộng tranh hoa lá, cỏ cây. Mơ ước của Trân giống như các nghệ sĩ khác là tác phẩm được nhiều người trong và ngoài nước biết đến, và bên cạnh đó Trân đang ấp ủ kế hoạch làm 1 triển lãm tranh giấy xoắn với chủ đề động vật trong sách đỏ của Việt Nam và trên thế giới ● Aug.2018 Leisure & Travel 75

Based on this concept, VEO – Volunteer for Education was born with the hope of helping poor and hapless people.

esides discovering a new nation, uncovering the hidden beauty and leaning about their traditions, voluntourists now have a chance to become a part of the community, sharing knowledge and passion with the locals in order to implement long-term development, boost the local economy and create more job opportunities. Depending on the voluntourism program, participants can engage in varied activities from helping on daily tasks to teaching English and giving advice regarding business operations. By working, living, and sharing a life with local people, voluntourists will gain a deep understanding of Vietnamese culture, things that they cannot find in big cities. VEO – Volunteer for Education is a voluntourism start-up, established
by Nguyen Huyen Phuong with the vision of equipping people in rural areas with certain skills and knowledge to earn more income and establishing business right on their lands. Locals will learn how to transform their house into a homestay, create and sell souvenirs, or provide travelling services in order to create sustainability. Children will learn how to read, communicate with foreigners, and apply essential survival skills. Besides voluntourism, VEO also operates other programs such as school building for highland children, receiving supports from many interested sponsors. Up to today, VEO has established 4 commune schools and 2 city schools. In addition, VEO organized a charity program called “We are superheroes” to call for donations, which are used to support children with cancer ●

Voluntourism의 스타트업인 VEO는 Nguyen Huyen Phuong이 지역 주민에게 기술과 지식을 교육시킴으로써 그들에게 더 나은 수익을 안겨주고, 주민들의 땅에 직접 비즈니스가 운영될 수 있는 길을 마련하고자 설립했다. 실제로 지역주민들은 자신들의 집을 홈스테이로 운영하는 방법, 기념품을 제작하고 판매하는 방법, 여행서비스를 제공하는 방법 등을 배우게 된다. 어린이들은 글을 배우면서 외국인과 소통하는 방법을 체득하고 자립을 위한 기술을 습득한다. or centuries, the belief of Vietnamese people on Mother Goddesses who represents Heaven, Water, Earth, Mountain and Forest is practiced with the hope of a brighter future, protection, health and prosperity. In 2016, the practice related to this belief was recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The show portrays a ritual of re-creating the images of Gods and Goddesses through the medium. During the show, the medium plays as three different characters, reliving the God and Goddesses by letting the spirits stay inside her body. The show is a journey to the spiritual world, which is demonstrated by a fascinating combination of Vietnam traditional artistry and modern art effects.

The musical genre used is “Chau Van”, which features elaborate and serious lyrics to praise the Goddesses, telling the story of the gods’ lives. 간의 탄생과 죽음에 대한 경외, 그리고 자연 앞에서는 한없이 작은 존재인 인간 스스로에 대한 성찰에서 비롯되어 고대로부터 내려오는 종교인 지모신(地母神)에 대한 숭상에서 시작된 이 무속신앙은 한국과 베트남 모두 각종 사물에 신이 깃들어 있다는 믿음, 그리고 조상과 영웅(장군)을 기리는 효심과 함께 발전했고, 신과 인간을 연결하는 무당은 이 문화에서 빠질 수 없는 존재다. ”Tứ Phủ”는 그 무당을 주제로 한 공연이다. 한국, 베트남 양국 모두 무당의 역할과 모습은 매우 닮아있다. 무당(Thầy đồng)은 신을 부르기 위해 화려한 옷을 입고, 바로 옆에서 두드리는 징과 북, 피리 소리와 노래가락에 맞춰 춤을 춘다. 무르익은 분위기 속에서 접신을 하고 나면 무당인지, 신인지 알 수 없는 초월적인 존재는 인간의 앞날을 점쳐주거나 불운을 쫓아준다. 이 과정을 1시간에 담은 공연인 ”Tứ Phủ” 는 동양인 관객에게는 동질성으로부터 오는 친근함을 주고, 서양인 관객에게는 신비로운 동양의 전통을 따라 시간여행을 한다. 시베리아를 기준으로 하는 북아시아 지역의 샤머니즘의 형태를 가장 고전적이며 전형적인 형태로 보는것이 일반적인데, 시베리아와는 그 어떤 연관성도 전혀 없을 것만 같은 남국의 베트남은 어찌하여 북아시아의 한 국가인 한국의 무속신앙과 그 신을 불러들이는 행태가 이리도 닮은 것일까. 베트남과 한국의 문화가 가지는 동질성은 알면 알수록 신기하기만 할 따름이다 ●

The Vertical Sun Ray L “The Vertical Sun Ray” is the name of a salad at V’s Home – a vegetarian restaurant I visited by chance on a summer day in July. Illuminated by the vertical sunlight from the glass ceiling of a vintage French mansion, and with the shade of surrounding greenery, the vibe of V’s Home is that of a tranquil summer garden. Away from the stress of daily life, and with a rustic background decorated with floral tiles and familiar household furniture, the restaurant is an idyllic place for anyone who searches for a laid-back lifestyle. Saying “No” to the use of artificial ingredients, every flavor at V’s Home is studied and created from the most natural elements; even the one-time-use straws are made of grass and vegetables. Each dish is an improvised and sophisticated art masterpiece: “The Vertical Sun Ray” is composed of sweet orange pieces on top of green avocado sauce, while “The Pumpkin Carriage” is beautifully decorated like Cinderella’s

I chose the “Coconut and Red Dragon Fruit Juice” and was blown away by its cute pink color and a light taste of sweetness. The green tea and rosemary leaf juice is also worth a try. Sitting in V’s House is like being in the middle of a green garden in the summer where visitors can experience a peaceful, refreshing atmosphere while relishing the most delicious vegetarian dishes ●
7월의 어느 여름 날. 우연히 방문한 채식 식당에서 처음 맛 봤던 샐러드의 이름이 "The Vertical Sun Ray (수직으로 비춰 들어오는 햇빛)" 이었다. 실내에 놓인 푸른 정원과 유리 천장으로 마감된 프랑스풍 저택, 그리고 샐러드 이름처럼 그 공간을 가득 채우는 수직의 햇빛. 이 모든 것들이 어우러져 고요한 여름 정원을 만들어 내고 있었다.
V's Home은 번잡한 Duong Thanh 거리에 있지만 좁은 골목 안 2층에 숨겨져 있는 소박하면서도 느긋한 레스토랑이다. 복잡하기만 한 도시에서 벗어난 듯 편안한 분위기를 안겨주는 이 곳은 꽃무늬 타일과 손때묻은 가정용 가구가 그 분위기를 더욱 살려준다. 인공적인 재료는 일절 사용하지 않고, V's Home의 맛은 모두 천연 재료에서만 탄생된다. 심지어 한번만 사용되는 빨대도 풀이나 채소로 만든다. 모든 요리가 그야말로 무에서 유를 창조해내는 작품이나 마찬가지다. “The Vertical Sun Ray”는 초록색 아보카도 소스 위에 달콤한 오렌지 조각들이 놓여져 있고, “The Pumpkin Carriage”는 마치 신데렐라의 호박마차처럼 장식했다. “Summer breeze”, “Lolita”, “The Best friends” 또는 “Sole Mio”, “Santa Lucia” 처럼 메뉴판에서 이름만 봐도 즐거운 음료수들이 가득하기도 하다.

Don’t forget to take make a stop on the Long Bien bridge - one of the signature architectural treasures of Hanoi. Established in 1898 by the French, Long Bien Bridge was built across the Red River. Nowadays, the bridge is only for trains, bikes and scooters with railroad lane in the middle and other transportation lanes on the sides. From the Long Bien bridge, you can have a panoramic view over the city of Hanoi especially at sunrise.
Bat Trang 도자기 마을은 놓치면 아쉬운 곳이다. 강에 의해 각 지역으로 운송되는 배가 들어오는 장소인 Bat Trang은 저렴한 가격으로 도자기를 구경 할 수 있는 곳이다.
하노이에서 자전거로 이동할 때 가장 신날 때는 도시의 좁디 좁은 골목에도 쉽게 들어갈 수 있을 때가 아닐까. Quang Ba를 떠나 구시가지로 향하는 길을 따라 가면 An Duong의 인구 밀집 지역으로 연결된다. 여기서 갑자기 건물들 사이에 "작은" 차선이 생긴다. An Duong을 떠나 북쪽에서 가장 큰 도매 시장 중 하나 인 Long Bien 시장을 통해 진짜 하노이를 만나게 된다. 그 옆에는 long bien 철교가 있는데, 이는 프랑스의 에펠탑을 만든 에펠에 의해 1898 년에 건축되었으며, 하노이의 건축 유산 중 하나다. 이 다리는 자동차는 다니지 못하고 자전거와 오토바이 전용이며 교량 중간에는 열차가 통행한다. 다리 위에서는 하노이의 상징인 홍강 전체를 볼 수 있다. 하노이라는 이름은 강가에 있는 도시를 의미하며, 그 강은 홍강을 의미한다. 평화로운 배경을 뒤로 사진 찍기에도 좋다. 하노이는 복잡함 속에 정적도 있으며 시끄러움 속에 고요함이 있기에 여행하는 시간은 휴식의 시간이 되어 줄 수 있다. 천년 역사가 담긴 하노이가 숨겨둔 다양한 모습을 하나씩 발견하길 바란다. ●

PREPARATION/ 예비
1.Peel, remove seeds, and julienne
green papaya. Peel and julienne carrot. Put shredded papaya and carrot in a bowl with some ice cubes and add some salt. Soak in cold water and leave aside for 15 minutes. Put the papaya and carrot in a colander and squeeze out excess water by hand.

Art is a long journey, which has no beginning or end. As a passenger on that tough pathway, an artist has to keep exploring, searching, and adapting despite the unavoidable failures, self-doubts or depression. By portraying their own “voyage”, each artist of the “Đa Diện” exhibition strives to introduce a different aspect of art.
“Đa Diện” in English means “multi-dimensions”, “multi-aspects” or “multi-faces”. This exhibition is a collection of amazing artwork from 11 artists, with each artwork having its own story, narrating the journey in search of his/her true identity. All 11 artists including Nguyen Minh, Le The Anh, Khong Do Duy, Cuong Chu, Hung Ro, Dang Huu, Duy Hoa, Bui Hoang Duong, Nguyen Huan, Duong Tuan, Nguyen Minh belong to the 70s and 80s generation, have graduated from art school and achieved certain accomplishments somewhere in their professional life. However, each of them is still on their way to find their own identity, style and passion. Some specialize in abstract, others follow the style of realistic, and some focus on expressionism. Therefore, visitors will not find any particular style or medium throughout the exhibition but will be amazed by how those uncorrelated artworks of paintings, graphics, oil paintings and even penmanship together create a mutual spirit ●

This is the most proper and popular way to greet. However, it is too formal for daily use, but a good start for foreigners to start with. 가장 기본적이면서 대중적으로 사용되는 인사법이다. 외국인들이 사용하기에 가장 무난하다. 그러나 친해진 사람들 사이에서 사용하기에 약간은 딱딱하게 느껴질 수도 있다.
2“Chào …!”/ “… chào …!” 인사말에 호칭도 덧붙이기/
“Chào” itself means “Hi!” or “Hello!” Depending on the interpersonal relations of the people involved in the conversation, you will need to use different pronouns before and after this word. Only saying “Chao” is considered rude and used between friends only. Sometimes, we add “ạ” at the end of the phrase to show more respect. Chào는“Hi!” 혹은 “Hello!”와 같은 의미이다. 그러나 인사를 주고받는 양 당사자의 관계에 따라 뒤에 붙는 호칭도 바뀐다. Chào앞에는 화자를, 뒤에는 청자를 뜻하는 호칭을 붙인다. 만약 Chào만 말한다면 예의없는 사람으로 취급받을 수도 있고, 이는 친구 사이에서만 쓰인다. 한가지 덧붙이자면, 문장 끝에“ạ” 를 붙이면 공손한 표현이 된다.

누군가를 부를 때,“…어이! This is not to say “Hello” but to call someone/some people, specifically to get their attention. Similar to “Hey…”, “Ơi!” can be used to respond to someone’s calling, only if that someone is about the same age or younger. 이것은 인사는 아니고, 누군가를 부를 때 사용하는 말이다. “Hey…”와 비슷하다. 그러나 듣는 사람으로 하여금 자칫 예의없게 여겨질 수도 있으니, 더 나이가 많은 사람에게 쓸 때는 주의해야 한다.

간단한 목례 또는 웃음 Sometimes you just need to look at people, give a bright smile, maybe nod your head or bow down a little to show that you have recognized the other person. 가끔 누군가와 눈이 마주쳤을 때 가볍게 목례하거나 상체를 가볍게 숙여 인사를 하면 된다. 또는 지그시 웃음을 지어도 좋다.

Of course, you can just say “Hi!” or “Hello” and people will understand, though a “Xin chào” shows more appreciation. 물론, 외국인인 당신이“Hi!” 또는 “Hello” 라고 인사해도 모두가 이해하겠지만, 현지의 인사말로 인사를 건넨다면 더욱 교감이 잘 될 것임을 확신한다.
