Welcome to your September edition and the “exam results” and “back to school” routines for many families. 2020 will be remembered for numerous reasons, perhaps none more so than for the thousands of teenagers missing out on their GCSE and A Level exams this year, and then hoping that their final grades are fair and sufficient to enable them to move on to the next stage on their learning journey. I just wonder whether or not the “Gap Year” of travelling widely before entering higher education will become a thing of the past?

Before you go any further, however, and start making lists of who will get what seventeen weeks from now, (Christmas, if you’d not yet had time to think so far ahead!) just relax with your favourite magazine … and enjoy the month ahead.

ow often do we hear the cliché, “An Englishman’s home is his castle”?

There’s no doubt that, as a nation, we seem to be pretty good at ‘fencing ourselves in’ when we feel like it – pulling up the drawbridge and cosying ourselves behind that Leylandii hedge.

Yes, there are plenty of us who would rather look out from our property and see other people walking by, but the ‘protecting what we’ve got’ mentality has meant many successful

businesses having been based on the boundary fence / hedge / wall around our little space.

Add to that the feeling that our garden area can / should be able to be used as another room (if the weather allows), then we can see how the firms creating patios, sheds, porches and all manner of outside furniture have been able to prosper, as we seek “the great outdoors” (once the rain holds off for more than a few days!) set amidst perfectly groomed lawns and flower beds.

Inside the home, more and more attention is being paid to the ways in which we can make ourselves more living space, by adding the conservatory or making that ‘dead space’ in the loft into a fabulous extra bedroom or two. Those partition walls can disappear and hey presto! … you’ve got yourself that perfect large lounge you’ve always wanted. Replace those windows, re-tile the bathroom, change those kitchen units, get a new staircase … the list goes on! Our castles are forever being beautified … and isn’t it great?!

This month, we’re looking at our living spaces, inside and out, and the myriad ways in which our local craftsmen ply their trades to make our homes and gardens our pride and joy.

September Gardening Tips

N

ights are starting to draw in and, with the shorter days, there’s less time to spend on the allotment or vegetable garden. Growth is slowing down now and hopefully you should be able to get on top of the weed growth. Needless to say, there will still be plenty of jobs to do!

A few jobs that need doing include: • Cut down asparagus to 2.5cms (1in) above the ground.

• Turn the compost heap and water if it is dry.

Now is a good time to take stock of what grew well and what was not as successful, as this will help with next year’s planning. Also, it is an ideal time if you are thinking of taking over an allotment plot or turning part of your garden over to vegetables, as you can prepare the soil by digging and adding fertiliser or manure and then cover it over until you are ready to plant out next year. Raised beds could be built in readiness and you have plenty of time to plan which crops to grow to suit your needs.

• Earth-up or stake Brussels and remove any yellowing lower leaves or those that have fallen off, as these are ideal homes for pests to shelter. Tall growing varieties may need staking against autumn winds.

If you have not already got a composter now would be a good time to make or buy one as there is plenty of dead or dying material available from your plot. If you have one, add any material that is not diseased, turn it, water if it is dry and cover to keep warm. Do not forget to add ‘brown’ materials such as: autumn leaves, cardboard, egg boxes, eggshells and sweetcorn husks, to name but a few. The proportion of ‘greens’ to ‘browns’ should be 50/50.

• Prune blackberries when picking is over – cut out all of the canes that carried this year’s fruit, leave new canes unpruned.

As far as sowing seeds and planting out goes, there is not much that can be done: you can still sow rocket, spinach, oriental salad leaves

and winter lettuces. Crop covers keep the temperature slightly higher than the ambient temperature and protect the plants from getting battered by harsher weather conditions. Spring cabbages can be planted in their final position, but it is wise to cover them in netting to keep the birds and other pests at bay.

• Harvest apples and pears.

• Ripen pumpkins and squashes by removing leaves to allow sunlight in.

• Clear away old foliage and vegetation – leaving it to rot on the soil may spread diseases.

• Plant new strawberry plants and those propagated from runners.

• Clear the soil of spent crops and leave it ‘rough dug over’ for the winter. It is also a good time to sow ‘green manures’ such as field beans, annual rye grass or phacelia, which overwinter and can be dug into the ground next spring.

Help is at Hand

Chris Goads BSc FCA, partner at Stephenson Smart in Wisbech, reflects on the impact of coronavirus and offers some guidance on the financial support still available.

T

he last six months have been a challenging time, and at Stephenson Smart we have been busier than ever in supporting our clients to help them access the financial help that has been made available to them.

There has been significant financial support put in place to support individuals and businesses through the pandemic. Some of the schemes are still in place and open for application.

Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and Bonus Scheme (furlough) This has been the most all-encompassing, varying and challenging of the schemes the Government put in place. The act of paying the wages of more than nine million people helped to bolster the economy and prevent mass unemployment at the start of the pandemic. The scheme is now winding down and ends on October 31st. However, to further try and save jobs, there will be a bonus of a one-off payment of £1000 to UK employers for every furloughed employee who remains continuously employed through to the end of January 2021.

Payments will be made in February 2021.

OVERNIGHT OATS With the kids back to school, you’re going to need all the help you can get in the mornings so get off to a good start with this easy overnight oats recipe!

Method

1 The night before you plan on having this for breakfast, stir the cinnamon and 100ml water (or milk) into your oats along with a pinch of salt.

¼ tsp ground cinnamon 50g rolled porridge oats 2 tbsp natural yogurt 50g mixed berries Drizzle of honey ½ tbsp your favourite choice of nut butter

Orchard House Light the Way for Epic Olympic Campaign with Spectacular Opening Ceremony The global pandemic might have stopped the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, but nothing was going to stop Orchard House Care Home from taking part in RCH Care Homes’ #RCHOlympians Campaign.

Residents and the team from the Residential Dementia and Nursing home have been busy scheduling and enjoying several Olympic and sporting themed events and activities over the two weeks the Olympic Games would have occurred had they gone ahead. One of the campaign’s aims was to highlight the active lifestyles on offer at the home, a lifestyle which encourages and enables residents to continue their passions and interests, and which helps them receive the many benefits of remaining active as they age. Given the last 5 months, the campaign’s other aim was to simply bring residents and staff from all departments together to share stories, create memories, and to enjoy moments of fun, laughter and lightness.

Well, Team Orchard House did just that, taking up the baton and rising to the challenge to make their part of the campaign a gold-winning success.

The home in Wisbech helped launch the campaign with their very own alternative Opening Ceremony.

Organised by the team and residents, the ceremony included a socially distanced parade around the gardens of RCH’s Olympians and torchbearers which included a celebration of the diverse nationalities of residents and

team members who live and work at the home, followed by a lighting of an ‘Olympic Torch’.

All of the Orchard House team got involved and supported the residents to take an active part in the Opening Ceremony.

Home Manager Maxine Bain shared the highlights of the ceremony, “The Opening Ceremony provided a wonderful lead up to the start of the Games. During the Opening Ceremony, spirits were high and there was lots of laughter and cheer.”

Residents and members of the Orchard House team took part in their very own ‘Olympic Games’ including, football and tennis tournaments, shot put and discus competitions.

The residents at Orchard House are, without a doubt, extremely competitive, pushing themselves to try and be their best to get a spot on the podium. As in the Olympics, heats were held and there were places for third, second and, naturally, first. The home wrapped up the campaign with a virtual Team Relay which crossed counties and other care homes before crossing the finish line.

Maxine reflected upon the positive effect the #RCHOlympians Campaign had, “The days were wonderful in terms of physical wellbeing and positive wellbeing through laughter and cheer. Due to the success of the events and participation, there are going to be more Team Orchard Events to come.’

The Olympic series highlights just one of many ways in which RCH Care Homes encourages and enables our residents to continue their passions and interests, and how age is not a limitation or obstacle to remaining active.

FENLAND FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY With the easing of the COVID 19 restrictions, we had hoped to be able to resume our meetings and computer research sessions. However, it does not seem possible at the moment with the distancing restrictions asked for. Hopefully, it will not be long before we are back with you. Our members have not been idle during this difficult time. With lockdown, and time available, many have been able to work on research at home. Some of our experienced researchers, who help at our Computer Research Sessions, have been busy working on the requests we get for help.

Family Research.

During my enforced ‘relaxing’ time after my operation, I have been quietly doing family research for a young lady we met at one of our research sessions. She has been off work so has been talking to her Nan who is in lockdown.

This has been great, as it has triggered many memories from her Nan and some wonderful family legends. All the things that you can’t find in computer research. The stories include a tale of a runaway great grandmother who eloped to escape her bullying father. To enable her to keep contact with the rest of her family they used a code name for her when sharing information. Later she asked her daughter to give the code name to her first grandchild. Between us, we are building a wonderful family history for the family. She intends to write it all down for the future generations adding the old photos her Nan has found in stored boxes. I am still working on creating a family tree for her. It has given me a lot of pleasure and sense of achievement during this difficult time.

Another World War Two Memory from one of our members.

Her parents belonged to an Entertainment Society as stage manager and wardrobe mistress. Costumes were made from various leftover materials including blackout material and parachute silk. Our member was taken along with them as a performer herself, where she danced as a young girl to entertain both British and American troops during the war. She remembers travelling to the camps in the back of army lorries. They were treated to a meal in the Sergeants’ Mess, a great treat during rationing times.

The men who were missing their children made a fuss of the young ones and gave them chocolate, a rare treat as sweets were rationed. Performing was not always easy, as the stages were often created ad-hoc especially for the occasion. Our member remembers one stage sloped slightly forwards and was covered in lino. As the dance was a tap dance their shoes had metal plates on them to make the tapping sound. They found themselves slowly sliding forward on the sloping lino surface. Another stage was created from crates covered in boards. Her dance was a Dutch Clog dance with a lot of stamping in time with the music and she felt the crates moving below her as she danced. At the end of the war, a big concert was arranged to celebrate in the local Town Hall. We thank her for sharing her memories with us. Helpful advice for your F keys F

ollowing on from our last article, let’s take a look at the uses of Function keys F7 to F12. Keep in mind that some of these function key shortcuts are different depending on the type of computer you have.

F7 The F7 key will bring up the Microsoft Editor menu which gives you suggestions on how to improve your document in terms of grammar, readability, conciseness, and more. It is only available in some apps where its functionality is relevant such as Word or Outlook.

F8 When using Microsoft Word, press F8 to select a word within the text. Keep pressing F8 to extend the selection, also using the arrow keys. Press Shift+F8 to shrink the selection.

Pressing Shift+F10 is the same as right-clicking on a highlighted icon, file, or Internet link.

F11 Opens and closes full screen mode in File Explorer as well as in all modern internet browsers. Press it again to exit full screen. In Microsoft Excel, Shift+F11 adds a new sheet and Ctrl+F11 adds a new macro to the workbook.

F12 For all applications within the Microsoft Suite: F12 opens the Save As window on an open application, Ctrl+Shift+F12 is the same as Ctrl+P (print function), Ctrl+F12 opens a document, and Shift+F12 saves the document (like Ctrl+S).

Do note that some keyboards’ F1-F12 keys include additional functionality when used in combination with the Fn key. For example, if the F11 key has a blue “Stop” sign under it, pressing Fn+F11 will stop the music you are listening too. The additional functions available with the use of the Fn key will differ depending on the brand of keyboard you are using.

Do check your computer’s documentation or the manufacturer’s website for specific details on which features are available on your keyboard.

EVA CELEBRATES 100TH BIRTHDAY AT LYNCROFT CARE HOME.

Staff and residents at Lyncroft Care Home in Wisbech celebrated the 100th birthday of resident Eva McAdam on Wednesday 22nd July with a birthday party, cake, cards and flowers. Eva enjoyed receiving her telegram from Her Majesty The Queen as well as many cards from family members and well-wishers. “We all wish Eva a very Happy Birthday,” said Home Manager, Brenda Durrington “She’s a great character with some wonderful stories. We’ve 42

had a fantastic day celebrating with her”.

Staff at Lyncroft Care Home organised a wonderful afternoon tea which Eva enjoyed with her friends at Lyncroft. Chef Neil prepared a 100th Birthday cake with strawberries and cream and the staff decorated the home with balloons and flowers. A beautiful flower arrangement was donated by Natalya Shlyapina a local expert florist and homebaked treats arrived from

Eva grew up in London and lived above her family’s barbershop on Tower Bridge Road, in keeping with the family tradition she later became a hairdresser herself and had her own salon. Hairdressing is in her blood with one of her relatives being Raymond Bessone, also known as Mr Teasy-Weasy, a famously flamboyant British hairdresser from 1930 to 1960.

He styled the hair of many celebrities in his chain of luxurious hair-salons in the West End and he even trained Vidal Sassoon.

Eva puts her long-life down to a good Italian Neapolitan diet in her early years, however, aged 50 she discovered she had a hiatus hernia so had to change her diet to fresh boiled vegetables and chicken soup which she says has kept her going all these years. Eva is a great animal lover and as a child had two Alsatians called Carlo and Rita and later two cats. She enjoys knitting, reading and cooking and is very artistic. Eva’s husband passed away in 1994 aged seventytwo, they had one son, called Graeme who she says is her special achievement in life, a wonderful human being and very generous.

WISBECH MAYOR, AIGARS BALSEVICS, OUTLINES HIS CHOSEN CHARITIES Having returned from his family holiday, The Mayor of Wisbech, Councillor Aigars Balsevics, has provided information about local causes that are close to his heart and for which he has commenced his fundraising activities.

The community causes selected by the Mayor are: • The Rosmini Centre, particularly for their support to people who are homeless, the English as Second Language support they provide and the overall integration of the Wisbech community.

• Local Sports Groups, particularly those aimed at local children to get fit or learn a new skill in gymnastics, swimming and tennis.

Councillor Balsevics said, “I hope to have ten local businesses helping me to fundraise, but if more come forward that will be excellent,

and we will hand out more. I want to be able to visit each business to give them their fundraising pot and to say a personal ‘thank you’ for their support.

With the current Covid-19 regulations, organising events is quite difficult, but I have a couple of ideas that I will share shortly.”

Not only has he placed three fundraising pots in each of the pubs that he manages, but he is also appealing to local shops and businesses to contact him if they are willing to help by having a pot on their premises. FENLAND DISTRICT COUNCIL LAUNCHES NEW-LOOK WEBSITE Fenland District Council launched a new website on August 17th, making it easier than ever for residents and businesses to access information and services online. The new website is still accessible via the same web address – www.fenland.gov.uk – but it has been transformed to offer residents a more modern, user-friendly browsing experience. It also brings added benefits including: • New and easier to read content.

• Easier to navigate menus, with ‘quick links’ to the Council’s most-used services.

• Fully optimised for use on smartphones, tablets and desktop computers.

• Improved ways to pay for, report or request Council services.

• Improved search tool.

as our new website will provide a significantly improved modern, user-friendly platform for residents to find Council information, our latest news and access local services. Our old website served us well for several years, and increasingly became the first port of call for anyone wanting to access a council service. Given the monumental task of updating such a vast website, we anticipate that there may be one or two initial teething issues. We will work quickly to address any issues as they are found and will be adjusting and tweaking the website throughout the year to constantly improve its usability. We would welcome members of the public to help us with this by letting us know any hiccups they may find or any ideas they have for making things easier.”

Photography Exhibition 11th - 20th Sept 2020 This year, the Wisbech High Street Project will be participating in the Heritage Open Days event by hosting an online photography exhibition of unseen images of Wisbech dating from the 1940s to 1960s. Visit the project website between 11th and 20th September to view a collection of black and white photographs of Wisbech which were found in Fenland District Councils engineers archives. Photos include war damage, images from around the town centre, the river, the canal and new roads and housing schemes.
